Anger Management Tip: The Art of forgiveness

Deciding if you should forgive or not may be easier after reviewing exactly what forgives is –

Deciding if you should forgive or not may be easier after reviewing exactly what forgives is – and what it is not.

· Forgiving does not mean that you forget the offense
You may never forget (and probably shouldn’t) what happened to you, but after forgiveness you can remember it without the emotional pain connected to it.

· Forgiving does not mean that you are saying what they did was O.K.
Quite the opposite. We can forgive but still see what happened to you as horrific or unjust.

· You don’t need to even tell people that you forgive them; the forgiveness occurs in your heart – not in conversation with them, although in some circumstances you may want to have a dialogue about it
It often backfires if you go up to someone (especially a relative) and say “I forgive you.” This occurs because the offending person often doesn’t see himself or herself as the problem. Better to do the forgiveness in your own mind and heart. One exception to this is if you are the victim of a violent crime. Some studies show that it helps your healing if you forgive your assailant face to face.

· Forgiving doesn’t mean you will automatically trust them again
Forgiveness and trust are two separate issues. Even after forgiveness, it may take a long time to re-build trust, if ever.
To instantly trust someone again after they have violated you in some way is not a sign of good mental health or strong self-esteem.

· Forgiving doesn’t necessary mean you like or love the offender, or even want to be in future relationship with them
Absence of angry feelings doesn’t necessarily create warm, positive, or loving feelings in you for the offender-at best forgiving may bring you up to neutral in your feelings toward them. It I possible to say to yourself, for instance, “OK. I forgive her but I don’ want to have anything further to do with her-ever.”

· You don’t need to forgive all at once.
This is a concept that especially applies to forgiving an unfaithful partner. Dr. Abrams-Spring suggests that to start maybe you can only forgive 10%–just open the door–and then see how your unfaithful partner behaves. After a period of time, you might want to open the door a little wider and forgive maybe another 20%, and so on.

After teaching for over seven years, it has become apparent why people seek help for better managin

After teaching for over seven years, it has become apparent why people seek help for better managing anger. The primary reason, above and beyond any other, is that they are hoping that by improving their behavior it will improve an important relationship. These important relationships often involve a spouse, significant other, boyfriend, girlfriend, or other intimate relationship.

Participants will usually say their anger has caused emotional distance between them and the other person and they are hoping to seek ways of improving their interpersonal skills so that the intimacy in their relationship will improve. While anger management alone isn’t going to be the sole source of improving ones sex life, the classes will teach skills that ultimately lead to more closeness between oneself and another. The argument could then be made that increasing skills in anger management would improve intimacy.

For example, if anger has caused you to have distance between someone you care about there is slim chance that person will want to be close to you. This is in part because anger creates fear as well as distrust in the recipient. Anger also divides couples because no one likes to be treated with anger.

Anger management classes will teach skills to foster improved communication, empathy, forgiveness, stress management, impulse control and much more. By learning how to change ones response and behavior when getting upset to become more positive, there is an obvious improvement in intimacy and closeness both physically and psychologically.

Anger management can be taken in the form of a quality and trusted online anger management class provider or by attending local anger management classes.

Emotional intelligence or “EQ” is a term that describes ones ability ability to perceive

Emotional intelligence or “EQ” is a term that describes ones ability ability to perceive, control, regulate, and evaluate emotions in one’s self and others. Those with high EQ tend to have more fulfilling relationships, are better leaders, and are viewed as excellent listeners. They are socially adept and tend to make people feel comfortable by the strong capacity for empathy and emotional attunement.

Unlike our “IQ”, which is based on genetics and essentially does not change, our emotionally intelligence can. Skills in empathy and emotional intelligence can help increase ones ability to connect better with others and reduce conflict.

People with high degrees of emotional intelligence tend to do the following:
1. Are extremely self-aware
2. Are conscious of other peoples feelings
3. Are straightforward and assertive
4. Can balance personal and work commitments well
5. Can easily put other people at ease
6. Connect with others by identifying and relating to their experiences

While some researches believe that high EQ is innate, most agree that emotional intelligence can be learned. An excellent way to gain skills in emotional intelligence is to take an anger management class which specifically addresses this topic. While anger management is often stigmatized as punitive, quality and professionally trained anger management professionals will make the learning experience nothing but exceptional. These skills can be taught in a live setting or even in a well-known and respected online anger management class

Anger is one of life’s most dangerous emotions and it’s effects can be lasting and devas

Anger is one of life’s most dangerous emotions and it’s effects can be lasting and devastating. For many people, the recognition that they might have an “anger management problem” is often overlooked. Angry people or even not so angry people that have occasional outbursts of bad or hostile behavior might be at risk. Anger tends to destroy relationships over time. Sometimes it happens quickly but most of the time it is a long, slow process that eventually drives others away. While anger is not a diagnosable disorder, an anger management problem does follow some of the same general guidelines clinicians use to determine other psychological disorders, such as depression or anxiety. Here are some things to consider, and again, this is only a guideline:

1. Do you feel angry much of the time or do other view you as angry much of the time each day

2. Has your anger gotten in the way of you doing normal activities?

3. Has your anger effected your ability to maintain a relationship in your personal life?

4. Has your anger effected your ability to maintain a relationship in your occupation?

5. Does your anger last longer that would seem normal or reasonable?

6. Do you lack good judgment or impulse control when you do get upset?

7. Is your anger so intense that it either scares you or others?

If your answered “yes” to many of these questions, it might be a good idea to have a visit with an anger management expert or consider taking an anger management class or online anger management class. These programs will help address these above issues as well as teach the participants tangible skills for better managing and controlling their anger. Don’t let anger ruin another day for yourself or have it adversely effect the ones you love in your life. Get the help you need today.

How assertive are you? Most people think they are assertive when asked. Contrary to popular believe,

How assertive are you? Most people think they are assertive when asked. Contrary to popular believe, assertiveness is actually very difficult to accomplish. Assertive communication is often confused with other forms of communication, such as confrontational or aggressive communication or even passive aggressive communication.

My hope is that through this article the reader can better understand the difference between less effective forms of communication and truly assertive communication. In general there are about 5 or 6 common styles of communication. These include, passive or avoident communication, criticism, passive-aggression, aggressive/hostile communication, contemptuous communication and assertive communication.

Passive communication is style that emotionally cuts oneself off from the other person. The communicator tends to change topic or ignores the other person, or simply starts doing something else instead of addressing the issue. Sound familiar?

Criticism involves making statements that encompass the totality of the other person. They make statements that use words like “never, always, must be, should” rather than being specific about a problem. Critical statements lead to defensiveness in the other person and often turn into arguments. Know anyone like this?

Passive-aggression comes in two flavors. Either the use of a lot of sarcasm or pretending like everything is OK, but then doing something that is not nice. An example of passive-aggression would be not calling when you running late simply because your mad at the other person and then denying it when they bring it up. Is this you?

Aggressive-Hostile communication is the use of foul language, physical force, slamming doors or throwing objects, or violating someones personal space, yelling, or using a negative tone. This style attempts to manipulate the other person into submitting to ones own viewpoint or idea. It can cause significant problems in relationships. Ever used this style?

Contempt. This is a style where you have lost all respect for the other person and end up calling them names, denying their feelings, insulting them to the point of emotional damage, humiliation, etc. This is often the final stage of a bad relationship. Is this you?

Assertive communication uses appropriate body language, tone, hand and arm movements and congruent facial expressions to what is being said. The assertive communicator uses “I” messages to express their feeling and needs. An example of this would be:

I feel hurt and disappointed, when you’re running late and don’t call because it makes me worry about you. I need you to call me if your going to be late, OK?

By learning to communicate more assertively, one can expect a more predictably favorable outcome of many conversations and feel much better.

These skills can be taught in a quality in person anger management class or a trusted online anger management class.

When the Pressure Becomes Too Much

Paula Santonocito

It’s a shocking legacy for Europe’s third-largest phone company. Over an 18-month period, 25 France Telecom employees committed suicide. Reportedly, at least a dozen others attempted but failed to take their own lives.

Stress on the job

Unions and others blame job-related pressure for the deaths, indicating that a comprehensive restructuring program, which involved mandatory job changes, some requiring relocation, created an intolerable work environment.

Management communication style appears to be a contributing factor as well. The Guardian reports that Didier Lombard, France Telecom chairman and chief executive officer, told employees at a management meeting that “those who think they can just stick to their routine and not worry about a thing are sorely mistaken.”

For approximately 37 employees, the workplace changes and management’s approach to implementing them were too much to handle. And there is no mistaking that job-related pressure was a factor contributing in the string of employee suicide and suicide attempts. The Guardian reports that a number of staff members were found dead in the workplace, and others left notes blaming the company for “management by terror” and bullying.

For HR and other management professionals, the tragic occurrences at France Telecom certainly call attention to the issue of job-related-stress and employee mental health.

Variety of factors

Although he doesn’t believe workplace stress would likely be the only factor in an employee suicide, Ari Novick, Ph.D., a licensed psychotherapist and owner of AJ Novick Group, a leading national provider of anger and stress management training, says it may be a contributing cause that could push people to a dark place.

A person who is potentially suicidal typically has other issues in his or her life, Novick tells HRWire, and may suffer from depression. However, he also says that for someone who has multiple life stressors coming together, a work-related situation could be the final stressor. “You never quite know what pushes someone over the edge,” he says.

Novick also points out that job loss is among the top stressors, right up there with divorce and death of a family member.

Therefore, if an employee has other major stressors in his or her life, pressures at work and the threat of job loss may be more difficult to bear.

“The creation of stress is when you have more demands placed on you than resources to meet those demands,” Novick says.

The difference comes down to the person who has better coping skills to deal with stress. “When you don’t know what to do, death is always an option. It’s not the best option, but it is an option,” Novick says.

Seeing the signs

How do HR and other management professionals know if an employee has unmanageable stress?

There is no clear-cut method for determining what may push a person over the edge; indeed, Novick says sometimes the little things can be triggers. Nevertheless, it helps to be alert to potential signs.

Therefore, Novick recommends that management take note of an employee who is complaining a lot; an employee who is sick a lot and still comes to work; an employee who has mental health issues; and an employee who has other serious life issues going on.

Complaining a lot may involve complaining to coworkers, he says. If complaining involves suicidal ideation, which is thoughts of suicide and/or plans to commit suicide, obviously there is an issue.

Employer’s role

But what can, and what should, HR and management professionals do to provide support?

An employer with an EAP program should make workers aware there are external resources to help them manage stress and life issues, Novick says. But creating or contracting for a program and then putting the word out about it aren’t enough.

Resources should be easy to access, Novick says, and not require pages of paperwork or dozens of phone calls. They should also allow for anonymity and respect employee privacy.

In addition, messaging about available resources should be ongoing, both to serve as reminders and to coincide with times employees might most need the services. When a company is facing difficult financial times that affect the workforce, whether in terms of pay and benefits cuts or job losses, employee stress levels will likely be elevated.

Services can go a long way toward providing support. However, other components are important as well.

“Some of it is the culture of the company,” Novick says. “Is the company looking out for the wellbeing of employees or is it a company that doesn’t care?”

It starts with top management, who set the tone, but it depends on individual bosses, too.

If you have a boss who doesn’t seem to care and you’re forced to be there to pay the mortgage or send kids through school, it can be very stressful, says Novick; it’s a relationship you might not be able to end, unlike a personal friendship or relationship that goes bad.

In France, the situation took an extreme turn, where employees decided they’d rather die than to continue working the kind of hours they were working with no support.

“This particular incident should be an eye-opener for employers around the world to recognize that the settings they create for employees have to be safe,” says Novick.

For individual managers, it can also serve as reminder. Novick points out that when you have a boss you really like, who you feel has your back, you’re going to feel better. By contrast, if a person is in a work situation where making a minor mistake means his or her job can be eliminated, it can be nerve-wracking.

“Creating a culture of compassion is really important,” Novick says.

Work, depending on the kind of job, can be inherently stressful, he explains, citing deadline-driven and sales positions as examples. Even though it comes with the territory, management has to be aware of the potential toll pressure can take on employees.

“Work should never be a life-threatening situation for anyone,” Novick says. “I think both human resources and the managers of these companies need to make it clear not only that they care, but they want to make sure employees are taken of.”

He acknowledges that particularly in a bad economy, when companies get into survival mode, it’s easy to let certain practices go by the wayside. But arguably in such an environment support is even more critical.

“My advice to companies is you cannot ever forget that your employees’ health and morale have to take precedent almost over everything; it’s almost as important as the air they breathe,” Novick says.

Here is what you’ll need:

1. A computer with Internet access
2. A phone
3. Court information and case number
4. Pen

Step 1
The easiest way to find a court accepted anger management class is to do a quick search on Google. The search might be: “court accepted anger management classes”. Contact the first two or three providers in the organic listings and ask for resources. The other option is to contact your local court and find out if they have a resource list of providers which you can contact.

Step 2
In some areas, there may not be an official list of providers offered by the court, in this case you may want to contact local agencies that offer classes or use the 211 directory.

Step 3
Another option is to take an online anger management class. Quality online anger management classes can be taken from any location in the U.S. with a computer and internet access. Depending on the provider, court acceptance can vary.

Precautions:

*Ask for credentials
*Cheaper does not mean acceptable
*Ask for court approval documentation
*Request a course syllabus

Anger is one emotion we all have experienced. It is part of the collective human experience. Anger

Anger is one emotion we all have experienced. It is part of the collective human experience. Anger can be both an asset and a detriment, depending on how it is felt, used and experienced. Anger is powerful and usually tells us that we have an unmet need. While anger can be a “first responder” emotion, it is usually takes the back seat to other more less acknowledged emotions. For example, while crossing the street you may have almost been hit by a driver not paying attention. You may have responded with anger by gesturing wildly, but the first emotion may have been fear, panic or worry.

What many people fail to realize is that their anger is more likely an indicator of other emotions that are not being expressed as well as needs that have not been communicated to a specified recipient(s). By stopping for a moment when angry and asking yourself, “how was I feeling before I got angry?” The answer to this question can usually be answered with some thought. Most people will say that before they got angry they felt blamed, minimized, worried, scared, anxious, or criticized. By learning to express our first responder emotions we are better able to let other know what is really going on inside our hearts and minds. It also allows us to better communicate our needs because the true emotion is clear.

An effective way to learn how to improve this skill would be to take an anger management class from a qualified provider and/or program. Anger management classes teach effective skills in emotional awareness and communication. By practicing these skills, one can better learn how to master one of life’s most misunderstood and difficult emotions, anger.

For anger management classes in southern California or for online anger management classes that can be taken anywhere in the nation click on the above links or call our office at 949 715-2694

Contrary to what you might think, anger management can actually be a fantastic gift for a friend, family member or loved one. If you have someone in your life that you believe would benefit from taking a quality program, now is the time to embrace this opportunity.

The easiest way to provide the class as a gift, is to allow them to take the class online. Anger Class Online is an excellent resource for online anger management education. Participants can expect to learn a variety of skills to help improve their interpersonal relationships. They will learn skills in how to communicate more effectively, better manage stress, improve judgment and impulse control and increase skills in empathy.

How does it all work? All you need to do is purchase the class for your friend or loved one, and provide them with the website address and the user name and password you set up for the account. It’s that simple.

Anger can often destroy relationships over time. Most people don’t realize that a relationship is over until it’s too late. Don’t allow either your own anger or the anger of someone in your life to get out of control. There is something you can do about it. Anger Class Online offers several great programs that will increase participants knowledge and expose them to concepts they likely had never known before.

As a bonus, you can get $20 off any program by using this “offer code” in the registration form: holiday

Anger management classes might just be the best gift you could ever give. To learn more, visit http://www.angerclassonline.com

I routinely get calls from people interested in anger management. They want to know what to expect, what is taught, and how many classes or hours they need to attend. Anger management is great way to learn skills to improve relationship in a variety of angers. Some people take classes to better get along in their family or friendships while others take them at the request of their employer or for a court or legal requirement. Regardless of the reason, anger management classes can be extremely helpful for improving the way you respond to others and situations.

Participants can expect to learn some very specific skills. These skills typically include learning better communication patterns, stress management, empathy, expectation management, forgiveness, improving judgment and impulse control, learning to respond instead of react and skills in improving self-talk.

Participants of anger management can range from couples, to individuals, and all walks of life. Since the emotion of anger does not discriminate, and we all know everyone gets angry, classes tend to include all different types of people. Anger management classes can be taken in live on-site class, such as the ones we offer here at our corporate office in southern California. They can also be taken online, such as through our world class online anger management class program.

Classes length can vary, but most people tend to benefit from about 8-12 sessions or hours of anger management. The curriculum we use, by Century Anger Management, of which I am the co-founder, utilizes the book “Anger Management in the Twenty-first Century“. This curriculum covers the 8 tools of anger control. Most people find classes interesting, engaging and a great learning experience.

Anger management is not psychotherapy either and is commonly confused by the consuming public. Anger management is and should be a class which teaches skills. Like all classes, there should be an organized program presented in a way that is easy to learn.

Anger is one of mankind’s most shared emotions. Anger is one emotion we all have in common regardless of race, religion, culture, economic status or age. Anger is often viewed as a negative emotion and one we need to suppress. Anger serves many purposes, and while it is often used inappropriately, it can also be a powerful invention.

The primary issue with anger is that it usually masks another emotion. It is much easier to express anger, for example, then it is to express sadness or fear. Our more primary emotions are the ones that we lack the the ability to communicate and therefore we use anger. The recipient of the anger is often confused and may not understand where the anger is coming from. The reason most people don’t actually talk about their more primary feelings is that it makes them feel vulnerable.

The question beckons, how can we learn how to be more expressive of how we really feel instead of using anger as a decoy? One realistic answer, is to take an anger management class or an online anger management class. Such courses will teach skills in effective communication skills and other ways to reduce anger. Participants will learn how to assert themselves in a positive and constructive way instead of using anger, which often has damaging effects.

Take the time to find a an anger management program. If could be a real relationship saver!

Anger management classes are an excellent way to increase skills to improve interpersonal relationships. While there has been a common misconception that anger management is punitive, this notion is far from the truth. These classes are aimed at teaching participants skills in a variety of areas, which include improving communication, empathy, judgment and impulse control, stress management, and much more.

Traditional in person classes have been the standard accepted format because there were no other methods of delivery available until the last few years. With the great advances in technology, quality anger management programs, such as the one offered by the AJ Novick Group, Inc. can now be taken online. These online anger management classes use the same exact curriculum used in their counterpart live programs but simply delivered in an online classroom.

These new online programs are an excellent way to to gain skills without having to lose time away from work or family commitments. They are also incredibly convenient and private. While there are certainly advantages and disadvantages to either format, taking an online anger management class may be a wise alternative, particularly if one has been procrastinating getting help. Online classes, such as Anger Class Online can be started immediately and the client has 24/7 access to the program. Participants can expect a world class experience with a brand and company they can trust.

As one of the leading anger management providers in the nation, I know how difficult it can be to understand how to choose an anger management program. Consumers to anger management often don’t know how to decide if its time to get help or where to turn. Since anger is not considered a psychological disorder it is often misunderstood. While anger is a completely normal emotion, there are several indicators which might tell you if anger is a problem for you. Here is a quick check list:

1. Do you get angry frequently?
2. Does your anger last longer than you’d like it to?
3. Does your angry behavior adversely affect your relationships at home or at work?
4. Is your anger so intense that you feel out of control?
5. Does your anger scare other people?

If your answer to these questions is yes, then you may want to consider attending an anger management class or take a quality online anger management class. Good anger management classes use a structured curriculum and teach empirically validated skills to help change thinking and behavior. Remember, anger management is a class, and it should not be confused with psychotherapy. These classes can be taken one on one, in a group format or online. The choice really depends on your schedule and budget. Quality anger management programs will teach skills in stress management, empathy, assertive communication, expectation management, forgiveness, improving judgment and impulse control, and improving self-talk.

Don’t let anger ruin another important relationship. While anger management has often been stigmatized as “punitive” most people will tell you it is far from what they had imagined. Anger management should be a fun, upbeat and educational experience. Get the help you need today!
