Winter can be hard on the gardener. We are longing to be outside but are generally stuck indoors while all around us blizzards rage. This is not strictly true in my more gentle part of the world, but I feel you those of you in less equitable climes. While Cicero may have left out a few essentials with which my adopted home is well blessed (art, music, wine, food, anyone?), garden books make it much easier to survive the dreary weather.

My own collection runs into scores and ranges from antique, leather bound works by eighteenth century radical agriculturist William Cobbett and the plant hunter George Forest, to those great little “Expert” books by DG Hessayan. My first copy of Be Your Own Rose Expert set me back Two shillings and six pence and was bought to assist customers on my parent’s nursery in Cornwall. I have several others in the series, one or two in multiple additions as they were updated to reflect new varieties, new techniques and gardening fashions.

We moved to the Loire Valley from Hertfordshire 16 months ago and have been slowly organising our home, social and business life ever since. There are still unpacked boxes in the loft and buildings awaiting renovation and most of my books are stored out there somewhere.

We did come across a few in the early days and the RHS Encyclopaedia was one of the first to be unpacked. A boxed set of two volumes, this is the third edition that I have owned and is completely indispensible to me. It is not perfect -  in a world where new varieties are released every year it is impossible for a book like this to be completely comprehensive and up to date – but it is about as good as such an ambitious work could be.

It describes over 15,500 garden plants, many with photographs, and lists them in the only sensible way: alphabetically, by Latin name. The large format makes it a pleasure to leaf through in idle moments and for those times when you need to identify an unknown plant, a pleasant hour skimming through the pictures normally results in a find. If you know what you are looking for and just want to check cultivation notes, you can go straight to the plant concerned. Now that my growing is slightly more exotic I welcome one aspect that I used to find irritating: the number of plants in the encyclopaedia which I was not able to grow in southern England.

Before the RHS encyclopaedia was published, my favourite of this type was by the Readers Digest and every so often I still refer to my battered copy of The Encyclopaedia of Garden Plants and Flowers dating from the ‘70’s. At half the price but with only a fraction of the plants, it remains a great reference book with a much more practical edge than the RHS encyclopaedia.

Of course if you want practical, the Royal Horticultural Society does practical, and a series of publications approaching plants and gardening at different levels are available. I have various books under the RHS banner on plant pests and diseases, fruit cultivation, herbs, vegetables and many specialist subjects. They are all written by experts in their field, whose authority is beyond question.

A great deal of our time is these days spent teaching gardening, garden design and a range of horticultural subjects, mostly by distance learning. Our Chinese clients think this is an admirable thing to do: to pass on ones knowledge to those coming up behind. We have a surge of bookings for courses during the winter, with gardening amateurs and professionals using their down-time to improve their understanding of the subject. For much the same reason we always have plenty of garden design appointments at this time of the year.

I find teaching is both pleasurable and instructional: you learn a great deal, with personal prejudices challenged and memory stretched by the probing questions and demands of students. The internet gives them such extensive access to information that your task is to explain errors in judgement and interpretation rather than just to dish out facts to be accepted without question. Our courses now include some serious vocational studies like the RHS Diploma in Horticulture however, and facts are facts. These sometimes need to be checked, so I’m glad I still have access to all my old horticultural books from back in the days when I was a student at Pershore College.

Now that we live in France it is fascinating to compare and contrast French gardening books and magazines. I subscribe to ‘Jardins de France’, the excellent revue of the SNHF, the French equivalent of the RHS, while still receiving The Garden from the Royal Horticulture Society in England. I also have a few French gardening books, although many of the best over here are translated from English. Le Guide Clause-Vilmorin du Jardin is the latest version of an encyclopaedia I have been using for many years, since working for the seed company Clause near Paris. It tries to be comprehensive and has sold over 5 million copies, but the use of common names, French common names, drives me crazy!

Before I lose the tenuous grasp I still have on the English language, I am determined to write my second book. “Was there a first”?  I hear you ask, as well you might for all the impact it made in the book shops at the time. At one stage I was considered an expert on bedding plants and this was the subject of my little book. These days I have CAD training to offer to garden designers and while we do quite well from residential courses it is suggested there is a need for a training manual on the subject. The outline is done and the plan is to complete the book this winter. It may have been last winters’ plan as well!

Another profitable way to pass time at this time of the year is with the latest editions of the seed catalogues. We are still sent these automatically by many of our favourite suppliers while others need to be hunted down and paid for each year. New varieties are the stuff of gardening and seed companies understand this. Old varieties are rebranded and presented as something new while, it is true, some genuine novelties appear most years. Planning your new floral displays and the vegetables you are going to eat this summer is one of life’s great pleasures and accompanied by mulled wine around a roaring log fire……or was that the latest Disney Christmas film?

Gardening is full of romantic images like this and it is hard to deny that it seems to fill some great need in the human psyche. Whether you consider gardening to be “the new rock ‘n’ roll”  or a connection with “the good life” with which so many of us have lost contact, the pursuit of gardening is something that links us to each other and with nature in one single, shared activity. If this activity is slowed or even brought to a halt by inclement weather and the passing of the growing season, we can still dream, surely?

6-26-08  London/Madrid

As per usual, I couldn’t sleep on the flight over. Jumped on my connecting flight to Madrid in London. Met a fun plane friend. Got out at the airport and

made it all the way through the metro and somehow made it to my friend Rafe’s house without getting lost once! As I was searching for his buzzer, he ran right out into me on the doorstep. We hugged in an exciting embrace since we hadn’t seen each other in so long. I put my stuff down in his room, and we went out to get some kebabs. After grabbing some food we went over to Rafe’s friend’s house for some drinks and to watch the Spain versus Russia soccer game. Spain won! After the game, Rafe and I went to see the awesomely dubbed old school vampire movie. After the movie, we went to find Rafe’s friend and hung out drinking in a plaza. We partied at another house, and then crashed at Rafe’s friend Rike’s house. I was exhausted after the long day and passed right out.

6-27-08  Madrid

We woke up at Rike’s and made some delicious breakfast. Got some 40s and headed over to the park for some guitar playing on a very hot afternoon. Rafe ran around to get ready for his Alley Cat bike race, and I hung out with his friends. Rike and I walked through the park and through the Plaza del Sol (the main center of town) to a punk squatter house called The Patio. The squat had a bar, bike repair shop, and story time. I met a guy named Toni at the squat who took me around, checked at the view from the roof of the squat, drank some beers…Rafe finished his race, we grabbed some kebaps and headed home.

6-28-08 Madrid

saw was Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights. The painting in all it’s good and evil intricacies has fascinated me forever, and seeing in person was breathtaking. After pulling myself away from the painting, I checked out some Raphael and Goya before heading back to Rafe’s for a siesta. Siestas really make a lot of sense. It’s so incredibly hot in the afternoon there’s nothing else you can really do but sleep. After waking up from our nap, we headed over to another one of Rafe’s friend’s houses for a few drinks. We walked over to a concert to see another one of Rafe’s friends preform. He composed some fantastic piano pieces. The 2nd performer was also amazing. He had several mics and looped his voice over and over to create amazing rhythms and songs. After the concert we grabbed some drinks at a bar around the corner followed by a drinking party on a stairwell. We then met up with Rafe’s friend Josh. We walked past the royal palace, and then ALLLL the way home since it was so late the metro was no longer running.

6-29-08  Madrid

Rafe packed up his room. We went out to breakfast and I ate a yummy tortilla. We headed to the park and drank vodka while playing guitar with Rike and Josh. We walked to la Pampolna to visit some of Rafe’s friends and have a few drinks at a cafe. Afterwards, we headed over to a Mexican restaurant for some dinner and to watch Spain versus Germany for the Euro Cup. Spain won!! Chaos ensued. Shots, drinks, the Spanish flag was painted on my face, fires in the street, people getting shot with rubber bullets, fireworks, car driving around honking, people screaming….We chilled in a park playing guitar and talking of starting communes until the riots calmed down, then we headed home.

6-30-08 Madrid

We had some donuts for breakfast. Rafe finished packing up his stuff. It was extremely hot out, so we stayed mostly inside, grabbing lunch at a cafe very close to Rafe’s. When it became a little cooler out, we met up with Rike and jumped on a bus to the outskirts of town to buy some shoes. Then we got chips and beer and sat on a hill overlooking Madrid. When we were finished, we went back to town to La Va Pies to meet up with one of Rafe’s co-workers. We ate some amazing potatoes and beer at a cute cafe. We chilled in a plaza, drank and puffed a little, met up with some more friends. Then we got some falafels and kebabs and headed down to an old plaza where there was an old monastery that nuns were killed in, but is now a library. Walked home at 4am.

7-1-08 Madrid/Train

Got some breakfast at the diner near Rafe’s house. Met Rike at the park one last time. Gathered up all Rafe’s stuff and threw it in the taxi. We said goodbye to Rike and headed on to the train station to catch our train to Paris. We boarded the train and had to separate into men and women cars. I stood in the hallway and watched the rolling hills of Spain pass by. Rafe and I met up with a guy from Mexico on the train. We found an empty car, played guitar, and drank vodka. It was getting late and the train was picking up more people, the compartment was no longer empty so I headed back to my compartment and to bed. It was nice stretching out on the bed after sharing that twin bed with Rafe for so many days. I had such an amazing sleep until about 6am when it became unbearably hot.

7-2-08 Train/Paris/Angers

Got up and washed my face and brushed my teeth in the sink in our compartment. I headed down to the dinner car for some toast and coffee. Chilling on the train watching the French countryside roll by. The train ran over something, possibly a dog, but they had to make sure that it wasn’t a person so we were 2 hours late getting to Paris. We caught a taxi to Montparnes where we jumped on the SNCF train to Angers. We couldn’t mind a seat on the train so we sat in the aisle. I started falling asleep and Rafe kept trying to stick things up my nose. Silly. We arrived in Angers and met Rafe’s parents. We went back to their apartment to eat lunch and play guitar. We took a walk around the city and ate some more food. When we returned to the apartment, we drank some beer, told some stories, and fell asleep on the floor.

7-3-08 Angers

Woke up to amazingly fresh air and Rafe’s banana chocolate honey pancakes. Very interesting political conversations and long breakfast. Rafe’s parents are amazing people. They have such a fresh look on everything and such a passion for life. We went to the Châteaux de Angers to see the castle, the city, and the huge tapestry of Revelations that someone wove by hand. After wandering around the castle for a bit, we met up with Rafe’s parents to walk around the city. I went shopping with Rafe’s mom while Rafe and his dad went to go look at bikes. We headed back to the apartment to freshen up before heading out to dinner at a cafe owned by Rafe’s parent’s landlord. For dinner we joined two of Rafe’s parent’s friends. The conversation was all over the place in a mix of Spanish, French, and English. I felt rather incompetent I couldn’t keep up. After dinner we walked around a church, a fountain, over a bridge, and along the river bank to get a view of the city. We walked back to the apartment and saw one of those huge beetles like in National Geographic.

7-4-08 Angers/Train/Paris/Rome

I had a yummy granola breakfast with the family. Very sad to leave Rafe after our travels. Rafe’s mom took me to the train station and said goodbye. I had to

hold back tears as the train pulled out. I’m never really ok with goodbyes. I took the train to Charles de Gaulle where I waited for my flight to arrive. I jumped on the plane to Rome and actually slept for once. I was able again to successfully navigate the public transportation system for the most part. Sadly, I got off the train too early, but I was able to catch a trolley to the area of town my hostel was located in. I stayed in an all women’s hostel that used to be a convent. It was very nice and very secure. Perfect for the alone female traveler. Nice bed, nice locker to lock stuff in. Wandered down the street to a little pizza stand to get some yummy pizza, beer, and gelato. I took my food to a plaza down the road to sit on the fountain and eat with a group of people chilling. I heard some English being spoken behind me, so I went over to introduce myself. They were students from Texas playing guitar and chilling. Drank a few more beers with them, and headed back to the hostel for the night.

7-5-08 Rome

Got up early and had a great shower. The hostel provided some delicious breakfast and coffee before I headed out on my journey. I headed out for a walk along the Tiber River to the Vatican. I walked into Saint Peter’s Cathedral, and luckily I had my scarf with me so I could cover myself and not be inappropriate according to their clothing standards. The cathedral was huge and amazing. It’s no wonder the poor peasants would go into these cathedrals and believe that God had some hand in its creation. I saw the Pieta, and headed over the Vatican Museum to look at the Sistine Chapel, Raphael’s paintings, and other works of art. Ate a pannini from a stand in Saint Peter’s Square. I got a text from Rafe’s sister Olivia, who happened to be in Rome as well. I walked along the river to the Colosseum where I met up with Olivia and her friend Heather. We walked around the Colosseum together and marveled at how ancient the structure was. We wandered around the streets and onto an island on the Tiber to this amazing cafe. Had the best ravioli and cheese with some white wine ever. Italy doesn’t mess around when it comes to food, amazing. Had a fantastic conversation with the girls. We walked all around the city at night and saw how pretty it was. The girls headed back to their hostel, and I headed over to the plaza to meet up with the Americans I met there the night before. We shared some more beers and guitars before turning in for the night.

7-6-08  Rome

Woke up, showered, and met up with Andrew, one of the Americans from the night before. We walked over to the Trevi Fountain and took a peak at that. We

headed over to a market on the outskirts of town, but it was way too hot so we grabbed lunch at a Chinese Italian fusion place. Wasn’t too bad actually. Took the tram back into town and headed down to walk around the Roman Forum ruins. I love old things. We fell asleep on a column in the Forum. I had a really weird dream, but I couldn’t remember it when I woke up. We headed over to this war memorial museum and came out to see some famous steps. We went to Andrew’s favorite gelato place and ate it on some other ruins. Andrew had some exams to study for so he went back home, and I walked over to Colosseum to meet up with Olivia and Heather. We walked around a bit, stuck out feet in a fountain, and found a cafe where I had a delicious eggplant parm, wine, and tiramisu. The waiter was bold enough to kiss Heather!! We walked around the city to see the Colosseum lit up at night. I headed back to the hostel to pass out. I was tired and sunburnt!

7-7-08  Rome

I woke up and headed back to Saint Peter’s so I could check out the crypt I missed earlier. It was really great to see where all the Popes, including Pope John Paul II were buried, but I was hoping to see creepy crypts with bones and skulls all over. Ah well. I wandered along the river and bought a bag from a street vendor. Walked across the river to the expensive shopping district, where I obviously didn’t buy anything. I found a little park to the north that was very pretty. I wandered around there for a bit looking at statues and the greenery. I made my way down through the touristy area and back to the Trevi fountain. I walked inside the Pantheon and checked that out. Met up with Andrew when he got out of class. He had to write a paper, so we just grabbed some coffees and said goodbye. I walked back to the hostel to pack and chill for a little bit before heading out for dinner. I wandered around the old old streets until I found a cute little cafe. I ate some delicious fettuccine with mushrooms and a 1/2 liter of wine. Whoops ordered too much. Took my drunk self back to the hostel to sleep.

7-8-08  Rome/London/New York

I sweated all through the night. Terrible sleep, but refreshing shower in the morning. Ate some breakfast, checked out of the hostel, jumped on the tram to

the train to the airport. I flew from Rome to London with a connecting flight a Heathrow from Gatwick. Never ever again will I get a connecting flight in different cities. My flight was delayed leaving Rome, then I had to wait for a bus to take me between airports, then the wrong Terminal was printed on my ticket and I missed my flight of course. British Airways was nice enough to book me on the next flight which was only an hour later and were able to accommodate my vegetarian food request as well! A+ British Airways! I made it home it one piece, ready for another adventure.

Logis Barrault

Édifié entre 1486 et 1493, le Logis Barrault, résidence d’Olivier Barrault, fait partie intégrante du Musée des Beaux-Arts de la ville d’Angers. Cette demeure, classée aujourd’hui au titre des monuments historiques, abrita des hôtes de marque tel que Louis XII, Anne de Bretagne ou encore Marie de Médicis. Alors que les façades illustrent les derniers fastes du gothique flamboyant, les jardins et cours annoncent la Renaissance française. Confisqué pendant la Révolution, il fut transformé en école puis en muséum provoquant ainsi la suppression des hautes toitures et lucarnes dans le but d’ajouter deux étages supplémentaires et une verrière. La Salle voutée, datant de la fin du XVe siècle, se distingue par son profil aplati qui rompt avec la verticalité du gothique. Cet édifice reste, avec l’Hôtel Pincé, l’exemple le plus marquant d’une grande demeure urbaine des débuts de la Renaissance à Angers.

Aujourd’hui le Logis Barrault, ajouté au réfectoire du grand séminaire, accueille les collections du Musée des Beaux-Arts. Deux parcours se côtoient: un parcours Beaux-Arts, composé d’œuvres allant du XIVe au XXe siècle, et un parcours Histoire d’Angers, composé d’objets provenant de fouilles archéologiques.

C’est dans ce cadre qu’aura lieu la Nuit des étudiants, le jeudi 19 novembre, de 19h à minuit. Au cours de cet événement, les étudiants pourront assister à des performances théâtrales, musicales ou chorégraphiques dans les salles d’exposition permanente. Il sera également possible de découvrir des aspects inconnus des œuvres présentes grâce à l’intervention des médiateurs des musées. Enfin le gagnant du concours d’affiche “Nuit des étudiants 2009″ qui devait illustrer les interventions des étudiants de l’école de Beaux-Arts, du CNDC et de la section Art Dramatique du Conservatoire, sera désigné.

Maximum Douglas Records est un label indépendant fondé début 2009 et spécialisé dans les musiques Metal/Hardcore. Seul à la barre, Colin a déjà signé 3 groupes et réalisé 4 sorties (bientôt 5). Il a accepté de répondre à mes questions.

Salut Colin, peux-tu nous présenter ton parcours personnel : experience professionnelle et au sein de la scene musicale ?

Quels sont les raisons qui t’ont poussé à monter le label ? Géographiquement, est-ce que monter cette structure en Pays de Loire est un choix, ou bien l’aurais-tu fait à Bordeaux (ta ville d’origine) si tu avais pu ?

Si j’ai monté ce label c’est d’abord par passion pour la musique, mais aussi l’envie de faire bouger les choses : l’industrie du disque qui s’enlise, le déséquilibre entre les très petites et les très grosses structures etc.
Je l’aurai fait à Bordeaux si j’avais pu… Mais Angers est une bonne ville aussi : peu d’initiatives de ce genre, style musical pas assez représenté, etc.
Et puis j’ai intégré la Feppal du coup http://www.feppal.fr

Quelles démarches as-tu dû entreprendre ?

Premièrement, trouver des finacements. J’ai remporté un prix au Defi Jeune de la DDJS. J’ai reçu une subvention de la mairie d’Angers, le soutien de pas mal d’acteurs culturels du coin, conseils…
Pas de difficultés particulières si ce n’est le marasme du marché du disque évoqué plus haut, particulièrement quand tu es trop petit.

Au niveau institutionnel, il y a pas mal de démarches à faire : Déclarer le label à la préfécture (comme association loi 1901), obtenir un numéro de SIRET, de SIREN…
Des démarches à faire pour chaque disque : Si le groupe est enregistré à la SACEM, il faudra payer des droits de reproductions. On peut aussi obtenir un code ISRC pour chaque morceau qui permet d’avoir des droits d’auteur à chaque diffusion.

Quel travail fais-tu concretement pour faire fonctionner le label ?

Pas trop de recherche de groupes, j’ai assez de travail avec mes sorties actuelles. Après, je fais beaucoup de recherche de distribution (trade, mise en magasin, dépot vente), énormément de promo (forum, news, envois de disques) et un peu de booking pour mes groupes pour lesquels les dates tombent pas toutes seules. Pas de journée type du coup, c’est très varié, d’autant plus que je ne fais pas ça à plein temps, ça reste un hobby et je suis tout seul, donc…

Quels sont tes projets futurs ?

Vendre assez de disques pour en sortir de nouveaux, rien de plus!

Comment tu vois la scène musicale en générale de la region, comment tu vois la scène hardcore/metal au niveau local, regional et national ?

Scène musicale très vivante en région avec les scènes de Nantes et du Mans, bien plus morte dans le département, malheureusement. Je suis peut être sévère mais il n’y a que très peu de groupes qui me bottent dans le coin et c’est bien dommage.
Au niveau national, y’a des groupes intéressants qui sont apparus dernierement (Overmars, Year Of No Light) après une période un peu morte depuis les années 90 (Tantrum, Sleepers).
Après personnelement j’avoue moins faire mon travail de veille culturelle, autrement dit me tenir au courant de l’actualité. Dernièrement, ce n’est que par hasard que je suis tombé sur HKY, un très bon groupe parisien.

Ton avis sur les nouvelles technologies du point de vue des groupes mais aussi des autres acteurs comme les labels, les distro etc ?

Internet et la dématérialisation de la musique sont très utiles pour les groupes, ils peuvent se débrouiller pour se faire connaître et distribuer sans label.
Ce sont de merveilleux outils et, à mon niveau, le piratage ne fait pas peur du tout. Ça me permet d’avoir accès à des bases de données, à des structure de vente, et de faire écouter mes prods sans décrocher mon téléphone, chose impossible il y a moins de 10 ans. A utiliser intelligemment donc.

Remparts du château d'Angers, XIIIe siècle

Edifiée au XIIIe siècle par Saint Louis, la forteresse surplombe la Maine, imposante par ses 17 tours massives, hautes d’une trentaine de mètres, et une enceinte longue de près d’un kilomètre. Le château a vu défiler plusieurs personnalités, dont les comtes d’Anjou Louis Ier, Louis II et le roi René. Il faillit être rasé sur ordre du roi Henri III lors des guerres de religion, mais fut finalement sauvé par le gouverneur Donadieu de Puycharic qui tarde à obéir au roi et abaisse les tours une à une.

Aujourd’hui, il est l’écrin permanent de la tenture de l’Apocalypse, collection de tapisseries commandées par le duc d’Anjou Louis Ier au XVe siècle. D’après les cartons peints par Jean de Bruges, elle fut tissée par le licier Robert Poisson. Plus tard, elle fut léguée à la cathédrale d’Angers par René d’Anjou. Exposée au château dans une galerie qui lui est dédiée depuis 1954, la tenture révèle un envers aussi parfait que l’endroit lors d’une restauration en 1981.

Dans cette même galerie a lieu ce semestre l’exposition « Splendeur de l’enluminure, le roi René et les livres ». Cet évènement a lieu du 3 octobre 2009 au 3 janvier 2010 en l’honneur du 600^ème anniversaire de la naissance du duc René d’Anjou, personnage important de l’Histoire angevine, aussi surnommé le « bon roi René ». Sont exposés des manuscrits ayant appartenu au roi René et à sa famille. Cette exposition vise à montrer au public le vif intérêt que le duc, également écrivain, portait à la littérature et aux arts.

Le 7 et 8 novembre 2009, la Cathédrale St Maurice à Angers accueillera le Festival Printemps des Orgues. Cet événement est un hommage au compositeur Jea-Louis Florentz, décédé en 2004. Artiste français, né en 1947, Jean-Louis Florentz a obtenu de nombreux prix faisant  de lui un artiste reconnu dans son domaine. Inspirées de l’art africain, ses oeuvres retracent son parcours personnel, abordent les thèmes de l’accueil, la tolérance mais aussi de l’appel vers l’au-delà. L’importance de la foi dans son existence explique cette volonté de l’association Foi et Culture à lui rendre hommage lors de ces concerts à la Cathédrale St Maurice.

Cathédrale St Maurice

Lieu emblématique du gothique angevin, la cathédrale St Maurice se veut vecteur de transmission de la foi et de la culture. Classée au titre des monuments historiques depuis 1862,  elle se situe à la frontière entre le roman et le gothique. La construction de cet édifice commença au XII e siècle, après l’incendie qui détruisit la cathédrale romane du XIe siècle. Elle est l’œuvre, notamment, des évêques Normand de Doué et Guillaume de Beaumont qui firent construire la nef et le portail. Les colonnes et les voutes d’ogives qui donnèrent naissance au gothique angevin ne furent ajoutées qu’au milieu du XIIe siècle. La galerie de personnages, située sous les deux tours, fut réalisée au XVIe siècle. Un ancien porche médieval, placé devant le portail d’entrée, fut détruit pour cause de vétusté en 1806. Plusieurs projets de reconstruction furent envisagés mais aucun n’aboutit.

Un squat a été fermé à Angers, ce matin, alors que des demandeurs d’asile s’y trouvaient. Des ouvriers sont venus barricadés l’immeuble squattés illégalement par des réfugiés. « Certains ont décidé de se rendre directement à la mairie, d’autres de se laisser enfermer à l’intérieur », raconte Pierre-Jean, du Collectif des sans papiers du Maine-et-Loire.

La Ville d’Angers enregistre un afflux de demandeurs d’asile depuis le démantèlement de la « jungle » de Calais. « En deux jours, on vient de comptabiliser 20 nouvelles domiciliations», estime ce bénévole. Rose-Marie Véron, adjointe au maire, parle de « seuil critique ». Elle s’explique : « On commence à être submergé entre cet afflux liée à Calais et l’absence d’une politique nationale. C’est injuste : la mairie est malmenée alors que nous agissons beaucoup ! » L’élue poursuit : « Les associations humanitaires n’ont plus les capacités d’accueillir dignement ces gens-là. Le Point accueil santé solidarité est débordé. Aux Restos du cœur, 70% des repas sont distribués aux demandeurs d’asile. On en appelle à l’Etat avec violence et véhémence. On se sent abandonné. »

Comme chaque année, la ville d’Angers nous présente l’exposition « Triptyque » du 10 Octobre au 22 novembre 2009. Trois lieux ont été investit pour l’occasion, l’Hôtel de ville, le Grand théâtre et la tour Saint Aubin. Cette exposition a pour but de promouvoir l’art contemporain et de sensibiliser le public à l’art de demain. Plusieurs galeries françaises et étrangères ont été invitées et nous présentent ainsi des artistes confirmés et d’autres en devenir !

Voici donc une sélection de deux artistes présents à l’Hôtel de Ville à ne surtout pas manquer !

NY Taxis O8 édition $4,10

Élodie Lachaud, photographe représenté par la Galerie Kandler à Toulouse nous transporte dans l’univers des Taxis new yorkais avec la série “NY Taxis O8 édition $4,10″. L’artiste expose une série de clichés prise dans un taxis et présentées dans des boîtes lumières rappelant les « lightbox » de Jeff Wall.  À voir !!

Carolina Sardi représentée par la Galerie Lelia Mordoch nous propose une œuvre à mi-chemin entre la peinture et la sculpture. Elle nous transporte dans un univers pictural nouveau où la forme, la matière et la couleur se répondent tour à tour pour former un étonnant tableau. Œuvre changeante selon la position du spectateur, elle joue avec les ombres en donnant au mur blanc, le statut de toile.

Du 17 octobre 2009 au 3 janvier 2010, la Collégiale Saint Martin à Angers nous propose une exposition des œuvres du peintre Attar Lawand. En effet, depuis la restauration des lieux et sa réouverture, la nef principale de la Collégiale abrite les œuvres de nombreux artistes. Outre l’accrochage d’expositions, ce lieu permet l’organisation de conférences, de concerts et autres événements culturels.

L’histoire de la collégiale s’étend de l’Antiquité à nos jours. Des vestiges d’un premier édifice datant de l’Antiquité ont été découverts dans la crypte, des éléments de l’église du Xe siècle sont toujours présents mais une grande partie de la collégiale que nous connaissons est l’œuvre de Foulque Nerra. Entre le XIIe et XVe siècle, l’édifice sera agrandi notamment grâce aux largesses du Roi René. Pendant la Révolution l’édifice s’est détérioré et il faudra attendre le XXe siècle pour que débutent des travaux de restauration.

Une quarantaine de peintures, d’huiles sur toile en partie réalisées spécialement pour la collégiale sont exposées actuellement. Ce peintre d’origine syrienne aborde les thèmes de l’exil, le corps, la guerre et l’impatience. L’exposition est ouverte du mardi au dimanche, de 13h à 18h.

Dans le cadre de cette exposition la Collégiale propose des conférences, des ateliers pour enfants ou encore des performances chorégraphiques.

Il ne vous reste plus qu’une semaine pour découvrir les surprenantes sculptures « vivantes » et toiles pailletées de Robert Malaval, artiste français des années 70, présenté pour la première fois aux Musée des Beaux-Arts d’Angers. Cet artiste pluridisciplinaire nous promène dans de multiples univers qui ont marqué sa vie. L’exposition commence par une série de sept sérigraphies sur un ton « pop art », dédiées au Rolling Stones, son groupe favori. On l’aura vite compris, la musique est une source d’inspiration importante pour Robert Malaval. D’ailleurs, l’artiste ne cessera de s’identifier aux musiciens rockeurs de l’époque. On le voit notamment dans ses sujets tourmentés et sa dernière période « Kamikaze rock ».
Avant de remballer l’exposition, une visite nocturne,  le 25 octobre, avec commentaire sur les œuvres offre la possibilité au public de s’attarder une dernière foi sur ces toiles à l’esprit rock et électrique.

En 2008, deux sociétés de productions associatives angevines Angevine production et Aelon se sont associées afin de créer “Courts-métrages” . “Courts-métrages” ce sont des décors de la région des Pays de La Loire portés à l’écran par de jeunes techniciens et artistes angevins. Forts du succès de la première édition, ils ont décidé de renouveler l’événement le 6 octobre 2009 au cinéma Les 400 coups avec 3 fictions :

• Laura de Jean-François Guillou
• Variations de Tommy Daviau
• Le passage de Samuel Meeldijk

Le point commun de ces oeuvres ? Un passage au-delà de la réalité quotidienne habituelle.

Pour Samuel Meeldjik avec Le passage , il s’agit d’une première confrontation cinématographique. C’est au château d’ Angers qu’il a décidé de poser sa caméra pour “sa dimension particulière et intrigante” qui colle à son film. Lors d’une balade aux abords du château d’Angers, Alex est intrigué : une porte se trouve dans la muraille. Mais Margot, cette porte, elle ne la voit pas… Le jeune réalisateur mêle perception et réalité quotidienne. Il s’attache à regarder “ce qu’on peut trouver derrière la réalité si on la gratte”. Autrement dit, autre chose, un ailleurs qui dépasse l’entendement. C’est ce que va trouver Alex qui parviendra à ouvrir la porte.

Avec Variations, il s’agit d’une rencontre entre deux mondes, deux histoires qui se parasitent. La première est celle de Thomas, étudiant en cinéma qui prépare un film sur une maladie mentale. La seconde présente le même jeune homme, malade, travaillant dans une entreprise pharmaceutique. Le réalisateur s’interroge longuement quant au personnage central. Sera t’il quelqu’un comme lui ou au contraire, un être totalement fictif, né de son imagination? Finalement, Thomas naîtra d’un curieux mélange des deux.  Tout au long du court métrage, Tommy Daviau s’attache à la question de l’identité et du double, de la variation de l’être humain. Est-on vraiment soi-même tout le temps ? Le spectateur est plongé dans une spirale, dont “on ressort, ou pas” , comme nous le fait remarquer le jeune réalisateur. Cette idée de cercle, de courbe, se retrouve tout au long du film : une femme enceinte, un écran de veille présentant notre planète Terre, ou encore les volutes d’encre dans l’eau réalisées par Thomas sont autant de références à l’arrondi. Tommy D. souhaitait aller au-delà de la réalité perceptible; c’est ce qu’il parvient à faire en investissant l’univers psychique de son personnage. Sans dévoiler une quelconque vérité, il laisse libre court au ressenti et à l’interprétation du spectateur, car la magie d’un film, celle qui saisit, réside pour lui dans le mystère.

De son côté Jean-François Guillou, intrigué depuis son enfance par la mort de Pierre Bérégovoy revisite le drame qui a bouleversé la France dans Laura qui prend des allures de thriller politique. Un jeune homme assiste à l’assassinat d’un individu qu’on devine comme étant l’ancien premier ministre de François Mitterrand par un jeu sur le nom tristement célèbre à la première page d’un grand quotidien. Le témoin fait son devoir de citoyen non pas en allant voir la police mais en écrivant une lettre qui parviendrait à tous à l’heure de sa mort. C’est ainsi une voix de l’au-delà qui dévoile la vérité. La présence du jeune homme sur le lieu du crime change la vision qu’il a de sa vie et des éléments qui la composent. La qualité des images s’accompagne de musique. Le jazz,  les rythmiques et le rap viennent briser le poids des silences. La technique est là, à chaque séquence correspond un plan et un admirable travelling le long de La Loire laisse deviner une carrière prometteuse pour le jeune réalisateur.

Bien sûr il y a les statistiques, les sondages, les enquêtes, les taux de fréquentation et d’occupation des salles, l’indice de satisfaction, le nombre de prêts, le nombre de passages, le ratio coût/bénéfice… oui, il y aura tout cela pour dire si ça marche, s’il faut continuer ou bien tout arrêter ! Mais il n’y a rien pour dire ce que l’on ressent à offrir des espaces et des services à “nos” étudiants, à les voir si naturellement attablés, studieux, détendus, chez “nous” comme chez eux, seuls ou à plusieurs autour de leurs ordinateurs. Il n’y a rien pour dire le sens qu’on a l’impression de donner à leur présence sur le campus, rien pour traduire le sentiment de se sentir UTILES, simplement.

PS : ne pas rater la taulière à 2′05″ assurant son troisième 22h de la semaine !

Une vingtaine d’étudiants s’est rendue, vers 18 h au commissariat d’Angers, pour porter plainte contre les policiers. Ils affirment avoir été victimes de gaz lacrymogènes, mercredi soir, alors qu’ils se rendaient à une soirée. Les policiers sont intervenus une première fois rue Lenepveu, en centre ville, pour tapage nocturne. Ensuite, les jeunes se sont rendus à pied vers la place La-Rochefoucauld où ils devaient prendre des navettes pour aller en boîte. Sur le pont au dessus de la Maine, ils se sont heurtés aux policiers. Une jeune fille en état d’ivresse a été emmenée par les policiers au CHU. Les jeunes se sont alors approchés et c’est là que les policiers ont fait usage du gaz lacrymogène. Les jeunes affirment, eux, qu’ils n’ont commis aucune violence envers les policiers.

D’abord le contexte.

En mars 2008, les étudiants de l’université d’Angers nous avaient fait comprendre, via Libqual, que l’élargissement des horaires serait le bienvenu et même un peu plus.  En parallèle, un groupe ad hoc composé de membres volontaires du SCD, élus ou non, réfléchissait à la question des horaires d’ouverture et du temps de travail des agents.

Après 18 mois de réflexions, deux de nos BU ont élargi leurs horaires depuis le 15 septembre (annonce sur Bua’bloc pour avoir le détail de l’élargissement). Gros projet = grosses attentes = évaluation.

Nous avons articulé le plan d’évaluation de l’extension des horaires autour de trois points : la fréquentation, l’occupation, les transactions.

C’est, évidemment, la première chose à laquelle on pense. Combien de personnes ont fréquenté la BU ? lors de l’élargissement du matin ? celui du soir ?

Pour avoir des chiffres plus précis qu’auparavant, nous sommes passés d’1 relevé quotidien systématique (le matin à 8h30, l’ouverture) à 3 (8h30, 9h et 19h). Les relevés de 9h et 19h nous permettront de recueillir la fréquentation entre 8h30-9h (extension du matin), entre 19h-20h ou 19h-22h selon les BU et les périodes de l’année et aussi de comparer la fréquentation à amplitude équivalente par rapport à l’année dernière (nous étions ouvert entre 9h et 19h auparavant).

Durant 7 semaines (2 semaines en novembre et mars durant la période de forte activité et 3 semaines en janvier et avril pendant une période plus calme), nous procéderons à des relevés plus fréquents (environ une dizaine) afin d’avoir une vision plus fine des flux notamment au moment des transhumances BU->RU.

Ces relevés sont manuels d’où le besoin de compléter les relevés systématiques par des relevés par semaines-tests.  La future BU de centre-ville disposera de portiques reliés à un ordinateur pour un relevé en temps réel.
