America is a really weird place. We put sweaters on our pets, watch the Kardashian’s do absolutely nothing for hours upon hours, do the cha-cha slide and most of all, we fling stupid looking birds at round, green pigs.

Imagine if you were trying to explain the game Angry Birds to someone who had no idea what it was:

“What’s that game?”
“Oh. It’s Angry Birds.”
“What’s the point?”
“I’m trying to kill all those pigs because they took my eggs.”
“Those don’t look like birds….that one is triangular-shaped and that other one looks like a bomb.”
“Well, that’s because the bomb one explodes and blows up those wooden block and the triangle one can plow through the wood block.”
“But why do they need to?”
“To kill the pigs.”
“Those don’t look like pigs. Where are their legs?”
“I don’t know, I guess they’re obese and you can’t see their legs anymore.”
“But why are you trying to kill them?”
“Because they stole the bird eggs.”
“To do what with them?”
“Eat them I guess.”
“Pigs don’t eat eggs….”
“These do.”
“Why does killing the pigs get the eggs back? And why are they balanced so precariously on cliffs and blocks?”
“It just does. And because they hide the eggs there to keep the birds from getting them back.”
“Why do you have to use a slingshot? Don’t birds know how to fly?”
“Not these ones. They have tiny wings.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know. They just do.”
“This game is stupid….why are they in space now?”
“Oh. This is the new game Angry Birds Space.”
“……..”
“Leave me alone. I’m learning physics and the value of perseverance.”
“Sure….What are those stars for?”
“You get stars when you win.“
“For what?”
“Just for winning.”
“How do you get 3 stars?”
“By getting a really high score.”
“How do you get a high score?”
“You have to kill all the pigs with as few birds as possible. Then you win.”
“……”

Seriously though guys. Why am I so obsessed with this game? It’s the world’s most ridiculous game and I can’t stop playing. I’ve spent approximately all day long, playing the same levels over and over trying to get all 3 stars. I have a problem. And apparently so does the rest of the world as it’s always the number one downloaded game in the app store. It’s a brain numbing game and we’re all playing it. We’re slowly getting dumber as a nation and this game is at fault. Kids aren’t studying anymore, they’re playing Angry Birds. College students aren’t going to class…because they’re playing angry birds. And numerous grown adults are missing work because, you guessed it, those darn Angry Birds. It’s no wonder we have a terrible economy. We can’t stop flinging birds at round green pigs. We’re all going to turn into bloated parodies of ourselves while we sit and stare at our smart phones for hours on end and not a single one of us cares. Because it has sucked us in and we can’t stop. Ever.

But I don’t really care. I’m not going to stop until I get 3 stars on every level, I’m not. Because I am part of the Angry Birds problem.

Help. Me.

#10. Green Bird

The green bird is just plain useless.  It’s the most hated of all the Angry Birds characters.  Once you launch the “Boomerang Bird”, you have to wait until it flies over the level, and then press so that it can fly backwards and destroy the pigs.  If you can get it just right, the green bird can actually be pretty devastating.  But clicking at the right time is nearly impossible, and very frustrating.

#9. Red Bird

The first character in the game, and the one that appears on all icons, the Red Bird has no power-ups.  Obviously, it isn’t as powerful as most of the other birds, but it can still do damage if aimed correctly.  The only thing the Red Bird can do is squawk when you tap the screen.  Not very useful…

#8. Ice Bird

So far only appearing in Angry Birds Space, the Ice Bird is used mainly to make it easier for later birds.  When it hits, the area around the birds turns to ice – including all pigs and obstacles.  This allows the next bird to be launched to cause even more damage. But by itself, the Ice Bird does very little actual damage.

#7. Pink Bird

The newest bird, and the first known female bird, the Pink Bird appears in the “Back to School” level of Angry Birds Seasons.  Once the Pink Bird hits an obstacle, or a pig, bubbles will form around near objects.  Those objects will then float into the sky before crashing back down to Earth.  This can cause quite a bit of damage.

#6. Blue Bird

Blue Bird is the smallest off all the Angry Birds, but can split into three separate birds.  These birds are weak, but have strength in numbers.  The Blue Bird is useful if you want to destroy several obstacles at once, especially if it is glass.

#5. Orange Bird

Released for the Halloween level last year, the Orange Bird appears to be a small, defenseless bird.  But when it hits something, the Orange Bird swells up to more than five times its size.  This can destroy numerous obstacles, and kill any unfortunate pigs in the way.

#4. White Bird

Launch the White Bird, or “Egg Bird”, above the obstacles, and then click for the bird to lay an egg.  The egg will act as a bomb when it hits the ground, destroying anything near it.  The White Bird also goes flying once the egg is laid, so it can be used to smash obstacles.

#3. Yellow Bird

The simplest power-up, but one of the most effective.  When you click the screen, the yellow bird will speed up.  If you time it right, the bird will go flying into whatever you need destroyed.  It is much more powerful when speeding, so take advantage!  In Angry Birds Space, the Yellow Bird can change directions, depending on where you click, also a useful power-up.

#2. Big Red Bird

The Big Red Bird has no power-up, but that doesn’t mean it has no use.  The sheer size of the bird means it can destroy over half a level in one shot, if used correctly.  Red Bird’s bigger brother has the most power of any bird, and can cut through even concrete.  In Angry Birds Space, its named Terence, and is modeled off of the Hulk.

#1. Black Bird

Everyone’s favorite Angry Bird is also the most useful.  When the screen is tapped, the Black Bird will turn into a bomb, and blow up anything in the area.  You can also shoot the bird into a strategic place and wait, because it will blow up by itself if left alone.  No bird can annihilate those evil pigs like the Black Bird.

Angry Birds Space: Out now on iOS, Android, MAC and PC.

It looks like the biggest app update might go to the Google Earth iOS app due to reports that claim the new 3D maps feature Google demoed last month will roll out sometime today. Until then, below is our list of other apps and updates hitting the App Store:

Walking Dead: The Game: While Telltale has been teasing the iOS game for the hit TV series The Walking Dead, today we finally get our hands on the first “A New Day” episode available in the App Store for $4.99. The game requires iPad 2/iPhone 4 or later, and it will release episodes No. 2 through No. 5 via in-app purchases in the near future.

Angry Birds Space version 1.2.2: Both the iPhone and HD iPad versions of Rovio’s Angry Birds Space title were updated today with “the second half of Utopia.” It includes two new characters, 20 new levels, a “never-before-seen space egg,” and a “GIGANTIC” new boss fight.

SafePay version 1.2: Recently released on the App Store, SafePay is getting a lot of attention for its app designed to protect “cardholders and retailers against online payment fraud.” SafePay’s technology allows users to monitor transactions in real-time and verify purchases to protect against fraud—right from their iPhone. The company explained how the technology works:

SafePay has developed a solution that brings greater protection to their registered cardholders and registered online retailers. Every time a cardholder’s payment card goes through the shopping cart of an online retailer, SafePay sends the cardholder a request, directly to their SafePay smartphone app. The cardholder must verify the transaction within 60 seconds. If the cardholder is making the online transaction, they simply click ‘Confirm’ and they safely proceed to final step of the online checkout completing their purchase. If however the cardholder is not shopping online but the account information was unlawfully acquired or stolen, the cardholder will be able to click ‘Deny’ and terminate the online purchase immediately. If the cardholder is not able to respond in time, then SafePay informs the online retailer who then determines whether to proceed with the transaction or not.

Google Catalogs version 1.3.3: Google’s Catalogs iPad app received a small, but welcomed, update today. It brings the usual bug fixes and number of user interface improvements.

Dragon Remote Microphone version 1.1: Nuance’s Dragon Remote Microphone app for using your iPhone as a wireless mic with Dragon desktop software was updated today with support for iOS 5.1 as well as barcode support for Dragon NaturallySpeaking. Nuance also updated its Dragon Medical Mobile Recorder app that works with Nuance Healthcare solutions.

Epic Meal Time: The folks at Epic Meal Time recently partnered with Molecube to create their first iOS game that allows you to “Fling delicious unhealthy food at the Sauce Boss.” The app also features music from commodore 84 + A1 & 1UP and the Dub Cobra. If you are unfamiliar with the Epic Meal Time web series, the epic promo video above will give you a taste.

Yelp version 6.0.0: Yelp’s iOS app received a nice update today that brings a brand new business page to iPhone and a ton of iPad improvements. Full list of features below:
