Sound: Blues Music + Hard Rock + 1970s + Great Lyrical Content = This Album.
Album: Powerage (1978)

Why?
For me, there are two AC/DCs. The Early Bon Scott era AC/DC, and the Later Brian Johnson era AC/DC. Myself… I’m a Bon Scott era girl. I love his writing style, the delivery, the onstage performance… the way he would smile on stage in the middle of a song when he knew that his band was kicking ass.
While Brian was basically the perfect vocal fit to take this band to that next level, Bon Scott gave this band the soul it needed to pull off the powerful blues rock sound they mastered for themselves. With Angus Young in the background shooting out wailing rock riffs and wilding out Chuck Berry style, and a driving rhythm section that could not lose, the early AC/DC were one of the pioneers of the “hard rock” sound. One of the first rock bands I remember liking. And its always a good thing when youre together almost 40 years later, making quality music.

Songs you need in your life? “Down Payment Blues,” “Gimme A Bullet,” “Riff Raff,” “Rock n Roll Damnation,” and the Vegas Anthem, “Sin City.”

Being a Concert Nerd, the live show aspect is really important to me. I didn’t know what to expect of them live, but this Performance here is what did it for me. Shot in 1979 for a show called “Rock Goes to College,” this give you a perfect ideal of what this band was like when they were in the zone.

English comedian Daniel Kitson ponders the meanings and makings of home in his production 66a Church

English comedian Daniel Kitson ponders the meanings and makings of home in his production 66a Church Road: A Lament Made of Memories and Kept in Suitcases (on till January 31). It’s an interesting show, Kitson in tweed suit on a kitchen chair surrounded by suitcases, a ceramic mug at hand; a yellow lamp with shade above him, no microphone. It’s an intimate semi-circular space, the Fairfax Studio at Melbourne’s Arts Centre, and he doesn’t need a mic to reach the rear of the packed room. His monologue is interrupted by vignettes of recorded narration, each about an event that might have happened in Kitson’s eponymous flat, supported by visual aids housed in suitcases, and a piece of film illustrating the Crystal Palace section of London that he calls home. I was glad of our front-row seat, though he did make the aids available to closer scrutiny after the show.

It was a clever piece of stagecraft, but it was Kitson’s musings — remembrances — of his time at this particular address, six years in what he describes as the longest relationship of his life, that set the mood and carried the night. Self-deprecating, hirsute, lisping, he’s an interesting performer, and his insights into just what made 66a Church Road so important in his life struck particular chords here, as we continue our search for a new space to call home.

As Kitson says, a real estate agent might describe it as two bedrooms, close to the station, but what we — all of us — want in a home is ‘lovely’. We want the emotional spark, the security and eventually the familiarity. Home, he says, is memories, and while some might come from place, more often than not it is from people sharing a space, interacting with it, and taking those memories with them. The heart is where the home is, it seems.

At times funny and sarcastic, sometimes quite damning of his landlord, with moments of melancholy and nostalgia, Kitson weaves a well-paced narrative about his relationship with 66a Church Road that is entertaining and thought-provoking.

AC/DC’s Family Jewels: rock memories

While we’re in memory-lane mode, I ducked into the AC/DC exhibition at the Arts Centre after Kitson’s show. It’s an impressive display of memorabilia tracking the band’s 35-year career, with nice big screens showing clips and some small screens showing very cool archival footage. I’ve had Highway to Hell in my head all evening.

Which is probably part of the secret of the band’s continuing popularity. They know how to write a hook. I can’t help feeling that the hook is getting a little worn out these days, but the fans keep coming, and have filled two walls with good old-fashioned hard-rockin’ praise for the band.

My mate Andy introduced me to Acca Dacca back in uni, playing the Back in Black album on his record player. I remember buying it on tape in Toronto, of all places. It remains a great rock album, anthemic for some, and a testament to AC/DC’s acumen and dedication in being able to bounce back with gravel-voiced Brian Johnson so soon after the death of that wonderful imp, Bon Scott. We saw them in concert way back when, and they put on a great show. But I don’t think I’ll be fronting up when they tour Australia with their Black Ice show in February. More memories in the making for those about to rock, but I’ll keep mine in the suitcase of the past (for now).

This Date in History: Everyone says that they are so busy these days, or at least we act like we are. I wish I had a dollar for every time someone tells me that they are too busy to do something. Do you think that you could just do nothing? There is an AC/DC song called Down Payment Blues with a line that says “I know I ain’t doin’ much, doin’ nothin’ means a lot to me.” My friends and I in high school always liked that song. I guess Bon Scott liked doin’ nothing. After a bunch of poor grades on a test, a bunch of my students’ excuse was that they didn’t have time to do the reading assignment. A few days later, I tricked them when I asked if they had seen the UL-UK football game, the VH-1 Awards or Dancing with the Stars. When they all said that they had, I told them to never tell me that they don’t have time to do the reading assignment. We use the excuse that “I don’t have time” to do a given thing when, in fact, we choose not to use our time in that way. We say that we don’t have time to visit a co-worker in the hospital but have plenty of time to watch that favorite TV show. So, the question on the table might be, could you do nothing or are you too busy?

I think that everyone’s life is an interesting story. But, I suppose society doesn’t much think so. The lives of everyday people tend to go by the wayside while instead we turn our attention to people who yearn for attention even though they didn’t do anything to really earn that distinction. Think of all of the celebrities in the spotlight today who really have done nothing except be in the spotlight. So, maybe we do like to celebrate nothing. If that is the case, then today is your lucky day. It would seem that the life of a newspaperman would be interesting but, in the case of Harold Pullman Coffin, apparently that was not the case.

One cannot find anything about the life of this journalist; not even the name of any newspaper for which he worked. Children Come First have a writing contest for the day but the link to the Smithsonian it features leads nowhere. But, you will find that he was described as a “newspaperman” and he managed to leave his name for posterity and history simply by decided to celebrate nothing. On this date in 1973, newspaperman Harold Pullman Coffin designated January 16 as National Nothing Day. I’m not sure of his motivation but he wanted to “to provide Americans with one national day when they can just sit without celebrating, observing, or honoring anything.” Beyond that quote and the assertion that he was a newspaperman, there is nothing more. It’s too bad that Congress doesn’t recognize Coffin’s day for about half the year, then the nation might be able to get something done.

Abolitionist Coffin Related To Harold Pullman Coffin?

Anyway, I”m forced to speculate regarding Mr. Coffin but I have found that the University of Nevada at Reno is the holder of the E.B. Coffin collection. It is a set of personal papers and photographs derived from the Edward Baker Coffin family. Edward Baker Coffin was born in 1861 in California. His family was from Nantuckett, MA and his uncle or great uncle was probably aboltionist Levi Coffin as his brother was named George Levi Coffin. Edward B. Coffin married Ida Pullman of Elko, Nevada. They had 4 children, including Harold Pullman Coffin. Now, that is a rather unusual name so it’s probably our National Nothing Day founder or at least a relation. Now, the listing of Harold Pullman was fourth in the list of the children so we may presume that he was the youngest. But even so, if we assume that Edward Coffin was 30 when Harold was born, then Harold Pullman Coffin would have been 82 when he designated National Nothing Day as an Un-Event.

Weather Bottom Line: It’s National Nothing Day so Saturday’s forecast is nothing. But, Sunday may be rain, so enjoy nothing while you can.

There are a lot of great guitarists out there, but being unique makes you stand out from the crowd.

There are a lot of great guitarists out there, but being unique makes you stand out from the crowd. People who made innovations in guitar techniques also have their place in history. That’s why I’m going to settle the age old question: Who is the greatest guitarist of all time? Well, here’s my top ten.

10. Randy Rhoads (Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne) - He’d be a lot higher if he’d had more time to play material, but sadly, he died in a plane crash. Still hell of a guitarist. Best solo is “Mr. Crowley” and obviously most recognized is “Crazy Train.”

9. Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) – What can I say. He’s Jimmy Page! Probably most recognized solo is “Stairway to Heaven”, but his best is “Achilles Last Stand.”

8. Slash (Guns N’ Roses, Velvet Revolover, Slash’s Snakepit) - One of the most recognizable guitarists with his top hat and hair. Best solo is ”Paradise City”, but most recognized is either “Sweet Child O’ Mine” or “Welcome to the Jungle.”

7. Dave Mustaine (Megadeth) – Best red haired guitarist out there and one of the smartest guys in metal, EVER. Best solo is Hangar 18 but most recognized is probably “Peace Sells.”

6. Adrian Smith, Dave Murray, Janick Gers (Iron Maiden) – There’s nothing better than having three guitarists on stage at the same time. The guitar solos are…amazing…seriously. Best solo(s) in technical terms is probably “Hallowed Be Thy Name”, but my personal is either “Deja Vu” or “The Clairvoyant.”

5. David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) – One of the most innovative guitarists of all time… Pink Floyd is just awesome. Best solo and most recognized is probably “Comfortably Numb.”

4. Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield (Metallica) – Probably the most recognizable metal band out there because of the crossover on the Black Album. In the beginning, however, they led the thrash metal movement and their solos changed metal completely. Best solo(s) is either “Fade to Black” or “Welcome Home (Sanitarium)” but most recognized would be” Enter Sandman.”

3. Angus Young (AC/DC) – The school boy! There’s nothing better than watching Angus moon the crowd in AC/DC boxers after he’s stripped down from his school attire. He’s one of the first guitarists to really put personality to rock and making it more of a show than a concert. Best solo is “Highway to Hell” but probably the most recognized is “Back In Black” or “You Shook Me All Night Long.”

2. Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath, Heaven and Hell, Iommi) – THE METAL GOD. He created what we know today as heavy metal. If he had never gotten the tops of his fingers cut off, we probably would never gotten the heavy, deep sound that he created. Very innovative and inspriring, and he’s also a hell of guitarist! Best solo is “I Go Insane” and most recognized is either “Paranoid” or “Iron Man.”

1. Eddie Van Halen/ Joe Satriani (Van Halen/ Joe Satriani, Chickenfoot) – Well, I tried to, but there’s no way you can put one of these guys over the other. Eddie is….amazing and Joe is just insane… Eddie might get a slight edge for being the major innovator in tapping, but that’s about it. Eddie’s best solo and most recognized is “Eruption”, and Joe’s best solo is “Surfing With the Alien.” Of course, everyone knows Joe’s most recognized solo, “If I Could Fly”, because Coldplay STOLE IT

If you don’t believe me, look at this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eb49QuPLuHg. Fuck you Coldplay. You have no talent…

For those about to rock…. we salute you”.

*Ainda colocarei outro texto, onde falo sobre a organização de entrada e saída do show, e tudo o que passei no dia. Quer acompanhar outros textos meus? Estou sempre aqui no ViShows e no Cerveja com Ogros.

E nesse meio tempo muita gente me falando “pô, conseguiu comprar o ingresso hein?”. Pois é, muito fã ficou sem.

Bom, o grande dia chegou.

Camisa do AC/DC, R$ 80.

E o show do Nasi, no finalzinho, onde ele mandou ‘Sociedade Alternativa’ do Raul Seixas.

Isso sem contar ‘Back in Black’, ‘You Shook Me All Night Long’, ‘Rock n’ Roll Train’ (que abriu o show) e no bis, ‘Highway to Hell’ e ‘For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)’ com os canhões e os fogos de artíficio que mais lembravam um reveillón.

AC/DC : Show dos sonhos

Creio que pecaram por não terem tocado clássicos como It´s A Long Way To The Top e What Do You Do For Money; fora isso, nada mais a declarar.

“and dynamite”! Um dos primeiros sons do AC/DC! Os 65 mil fãs queriam mesmo é “Back in Black”, “Dirty Deeds…”, “Thunderstruck”, “The Jack” etc.

John Mellencamp 170 cm
Lou Reed 166 cm
Bob Dylan 168 cm
Prince 152 cm
Bono 171 cm
Thom Yorke 166 cm
Angus Young 158 cm
Roger Daltrey 170 cm
Ronnie James Dio 162 cm
Iggy Pop 171 cm
Paul Simon 160 cm
Tom Petty 170 cm

**Just for the record, quem vai abrir o show é o Nasi, nada contra mas…

Black Ice World Tour

For those about to rock.

Aquí la lista de las canciones: Rock N’ Roll train, Hell ain’t a bad place to be, Back in black, Big jack, Dirty deeds, Shot down in flames, Thunderstruck, Black ice, She’s got the jack, Hells bells, Shoot to thrill, War machine, Dog eat dog, You shook me all night long, T.N.T., Whole lotta Rosie, Let there be rock, Highway to hell y For those about to rock (We salute you)

AC/DC

1980

Atlantic Records

In early 1980 (February 19th, to be exact), the intense singer of hard rockers AC/DC, Bon Scott, passed out in his car after a night of heavy drinking. He was found deceased, choked on his own vomit, and also had alcohol poisoning. The rest of the band, after considering breaking up, instead insisted that to continue without Scott, believing that this would be what he would’ve wanted. Of course, the band found Brian Johnson, still with the band today (like you needed me to tell you any of that?). How Angus and Malcolm Young wound up with two of the most unique voices in classic rock is beyond me (when I was younger, I initially thought the two singers to be the same person – imagine my confusion when looking at the liner notes).

Of course, the album that was quickly recorded in the wake of Scott’s untimely demise is the classic Back in Black (quick note, the album cover is black to signify that the band was in mourning). This album provides some of the band’s biggest hits (the title track, “Hell’s Bells,” You Shook Me All Night Long”). And yet, despite it’s inclusion into the rock and roll canon, the songs never grow old. Actually, that could be the reason that the album is canonized.

The album opens with ominous ringing bells – “Hell’s Bells” has begun. After a few of the bells, an awesome guitar riff plays over them. AC/DC, despite losing their singer, uses this to show that they still rock – even harder than before (and probably ever since then too, but that’s more of my opinion than anything else). It doesn’t matter that this is a mid-tempo song. It kicks ass, no matter what. The drums, refined at first, provide a steady beat, just being awesome. After the extended intro, the audience is introduced to Johnson as he sings some of the most brilliantly Hellish lyrics ever (“White lightning’s flashing across the sky, you’re only young but you’re gonna die”). Can you imagine what it would be like if this had happened now? One of the most popular rock groups loses their singer and brings a new one on board. Today, we have leaked albums available for anyone to hear months before the album officially comes out – no one would even care about the switch of the singers.

The album continues with another great riff in the form of “Shoot to Thrill.” In fact, Malcolm Young’s rhythm guitar is just as hard as his brother’s lead. The intro even captures a great drum fill by Phil Rudd. As the band comes into the bridge, Johnson sounds extremely excited when he sings “I’m gonna pull it, pull it, pull the trigger!” The band’s execution here is flawless, providing a sense of hesitation before the chorus. The chorus has a great lyric of excess: “Too many women, too many pills.” Right before the guitar solo, the band brings the excitement to a new high. Johnson screams “Pull the trigger!” and a syncopated riff is played, then the great instrumental break. Again, the rhythm guitar is just as cool as the lead, which doesn’t sound difficult at all, but has so much feeling placed into it. The ending of the song is also brilliant, bring the pace down low. Great arrangement.

The third track is the derisive “What Do You Do for Money Honey.” The intro again shows the band’s affection for hard chords in the form of riffs (which one will notice on every AC/DC album ever – the thing with AC/DC is when you buy one of their albums, you already know what to expect. Which could be a great thing or a bad thing depending on how you view it). With the vocals, Johnson’s words drip with malice, “You’re always pushin’, shovin’, satisfied with nothin’, you bitch, you must be gettin’ old.” The music provides a short, seemless buildup to the chorus, again an old AC/DC trick. The one thing I don’t particularly like about the song is the background vocals. They sound detached, bringing an impression of separateness from the music. With everything else so in-your-face, they don’t fit perfectly in. But they’re not bad. At all.

“Given the Dog a Bone” has one the best riffs, which just flows perfectly. The intro is surprisingly quick, with an awesome buildup. The entire song features great, pulsating bass lines from Cliff Williams. Being that this isn’t one of their more famous songs, it is actually one of their best, definitely one of my favorites. And actually, the answering backup vocals in this song are done well, even though they don’t sound too different from those in the last. The guitar solo, again not very difficult, is bombastic. Following the minor pentatonic scale, like most, if not all, of Angus’ solos, he hits the mood perfectly. This is particularly true at the end of the solo, with scratching fret sounds and feedback when the rest of the music pauses.

“Let Me Put My Love Into You” is a slower (keyword: slower. Not slow) bluesy song. Normally, I grow bored with bluesy songs (I have to be in the mood to listen to anything blues, but I particularly like blues with harder tendencies (as shown here), such as Zeppelin, SRV, or even Robben Ford), but AC/DC provides enough bite to keep it genuinely interesting. Best part of the song: the interspersed guitar licks between Johnson’s vocals during the bridge, “Don’t you struggle” – winding guitar lick – “Don’t you fight” – answering guitar riff.

The next two songs are two of the most famous songs ever, definitely two that are in the collective conscious of everyone, ever. “Back in Black” is the first of the two, with one of the most recognized guitar riffs of all time. Everyone HAS to know this song, and if they don’t, that person should be executed or sent to an insane asylum. The riff speaks amounts of refinement. It doesn’t overboard the listener with noise and sound. Instead it even provides for pauses – even the drums get in on following the walking lines. The song is amazing, even if the chorus is nothing more than the repetitive “‘Cause I’m bad, yes, I’m bad, Well, I’m ba-a-a-a-ad.” The guitar solo is especially lyrical, exchanging high notes with low notes, and just flows. And there’s a breakdown section! (Well, maybe not a breakdown, per se, but still…) The song is just awesome, no doubt.

Next is “You Shook Me All Night Long,” which is one of the most overplayed songs on classic rock radio, and actually, even normal radio (Quick note to prove my point: I’ve heard this song on modern rock radio stations and even at school dances.). Again, this is a very important cultural song, as everyone has to have heard it. I won’t say it’s the weakest song on the album, as there is no song that could be described as weak on Back in Black. However, I will say this is the least bad-ass song here, being a love song. It is an AC/DC love song though, and does have the lyrics, “She told me to come, but I was already there,” “Now I’m back in the ring,” and “She kept her motor clean.” This last line could be the strangest idea of love I’ve ever heard. It’s a very popular song for a reason, and that reason is that it is quite great.

Track eight, “Have a Drink on Me” brings the album back to its ass-kicking mode. Again, another AC/DC intro complete with lead guitar lines, a powerful buildup, and awesome drums (in fact, the drums are my favorite part of the opening). The song is one of the best about drinking ever, and the line “Forget about the tip, we’ll get Hell to pay” deserves an honorary award of being Fuckin’ Awesome. The guitar solo is amazing, but, actually sounds countryish when you listen closely. That’s alright, as it’s so hard, no one will ever care where the inspiration is from.

“Shake a Leg,” the penultimate track, tricks the audience. It starts slowly, almost bluesy, and Johnson even echoes himself (“Of the law, of the law”). However, a stop / start arrangement comes in, then with a huge, grandiose, drum fill the riff kicks in turning the song into an all-out rocker. It’s an awesome song, but after the intro it’s pretty straightforward AC/DC.

Lastly is “Rock and Roll Ain’t Noise Pollution.” Which is kind of an excessive taunt to disco, I believe. Which is fine, being excessive is what ROCK AND ROLL IS ABOUT, MOTHERFUCKER. Ahem, sorry about that. Got carried away with how awesome rock and roll is. Commanding a certain respect is the tone of the song, though. It doesn’t go all-out, fast-tempo, hard-rock. Instead it takes a step back, beginning with a slow bluesy riff, with very little distortion. We hear Johnson exhale in a sigh, a nice touch as we’ve come this far, and this is the first time the album rests a little bit. The drums snap, and you know a more powerful part is coming soon with that, and the feedback from the guitar. Of course, the lyrics could be cliché, but the band is so intent on the message that it doesn’t come across like that at all. It’s a powerful message, and could’ve been the song that killed disco, had not “My Sharona” come out the year before. Still, it’s a great ending to a great album.

So, after the death of Bon Scott, AC/DC had the decision to make of whether to quit or continue. It must have been a tough decision, for if they continued on, they would’ve needed to prove themselves. Back in Black is just that, showing that they can be heavier, more massive, and more popular than before. Johnson had to have been extremely anxious, for these guys were AC/DC. But Back in Black has stood since 1980, and is of course, one of the greatest rock albums. There is not one bad song on the album, and is essential to anyone who listens to music.

Comienzan con Rock n’ Roll Train, sigue Hell Ain’t A Bad Place To Be y rápido ponen a la gente en ambiente con Back In Black.

Gibson.com reports: For more than 35 years, AC/DC has represented the archetypal “big rock

Gibson.com reports: For more than 35 years, AC/DC has represented the archetypal “big rock” guitar sound, setting the standards for countless bands to follow. In particular, Angus Young’s incendiary lead tone and mammoth rhythm crunch have inspired wave after wave of rock guitar heroes, and he has done it all on a Gibson SG Standard. The SG replaced the underappreciated Les Paul Standard in 1961, and while the Les Paul would surface later in the decade as a rock and blues classic, the new SG (originally named Les Paul/SG) was an instant hit in its own right. Its simple yet inspired ingredients of thin, all-mahogany body and neck and two Gibson humbucking pickups gave it a snappy attack with a muscular punch, and its slim, fast neck yielded unprecedented playability. Now the Gibson Custom Shop offers its reproduction of one of the world’s most renowned SGs in the form of the Angus Young SG, a limited edition that captures the tone, look, and feel of this rare specimen among a classic breed, but which updates this legendary guitar with custom modifications requested by Angus himself.
