So I thought I’d take some time to share with all of you a few discoveries I’ve made over the past couple of weeks here and there.

First off, here in Nashville, I was at the Belcourt Theater last week when I happened upon their November art exhibit.  This month’s showing featured the paintings of a local artist named Steven Knudson.  I have  to say that I love it when I stumble upon beautiful artwork without expecting it.   Standing in the Belcourt lobby and absorbing these portraits  of women playing musical instruments in desolate country fields just totally made my day.   There’s a sparse and dark loneliness about his work that I really love.

Secondly, my sister posted video a couple of days ago on her blog.  It was a cartoon that I will be posting tomorrow for my Video of the Week feature.  In any case, this cartoon is one of many independently made Animation Short Films that can be seen for free on a wonderful website called aniboom.

Lastly, I’m not sure if any of you ever click on the links I have on the right side of this blog.  There happens to be a wee little link to a photo blog called “The Sartorialist” under the Fashion category.

This is the photo blog of a world-reknown fashion photographer.  He basically takes pictures of people out in the streets of whatever city he happens to be in at the time–Milan, Paris, Barcelona, Rio, London, and so many other places all over the world.

I have to say that I appreciate fashion in an artistic sense more than a materialistic one.  I could give a rat’s ass about clothing labels and big names.  Show me a suit that is tailored well or an outfit that presents a strong and rich perspective, and I will love you forever.  I really love The Sartorialist for giving me a glimpse of how people choose to dress all over the world.  Even the photos themselves are really wonderful!

Seems like the unpaid pilot for Swedish Television is back on again, since we didn’t get picked by FOX to become one of the five finalists in the FOX/Aniboom Holiday Animation Competition. Nevertheless, our next step is to track down the intern at the FOX Network that saw our potential, book a meeting and fly over to the states to meet him and pitch our pilot idea.

While we’re over there, we also plan to have meetings with other network people. And we definitely gonna need an agent. Anyone have the number for Ari by any chance? I hear he’s the best.

Years ago when I was feeling a little defeated about my search for a house in the midst of the housing bubble, my friend Leo told me he’d build me a house out of corrugated cardboard.  Leo is a master at transforming cardboard into all manner of useful stuff, and I’m certain he could have built something spectacular and livable.  He said a cardboard house would prolly only last about 5 years in this New England weather and so in the end I opted for a more traditional abode.

This animation by Sjors Vervoort uses cardboard in a fairly straight-forward but effective manner.  I think Leo would approve.

Yippee! We just got a mail from Aniboom telling us that we have been chosen by FOX among hundreds of submissions to get to the next step in the Fox/Aniboom Holiday Animation competition, for our submission “The Elk Day“. It seems we now a significant chance at becoming one of the five finalists yearning for the Grand Prize; a development deal with FOX.

And it seems that getting to this step gives us the opportunity to have an audience with FOX, and show our work to them for potential development as a “first look” option, which sounds like a really big opportunity.  The five prize winning finalists are announced during the first week of November. Keep your fingers crossed.

We engage in Non Verbal Communication (NVC) every day. You may not be aware of it, but your very sitting now, hunched or upright, in that chair of yours while reading this article is already a form of body language (whether you are considered communicating is, of course, a totally differently debate in itself).

Does anybody agree fully with me that the NVC is something we place utmost importance on, yet sometimes take granted for too? Today, I am using animated cartoons submitted to AniBoom Contest 2009. Here is one very capitivating example:

I am very sure you understood it perfectly! Why is it so, when this video is only 5% spoken while being 95% non-verbal? (Moreover conveyed by two non-humans too.)

This cartoon made me realize how universal non-verbal cues can be. If the fleas had relied on the spoken word throughout the whole clip, and spoke in for example, Russian, most of us would not have enjoyed it very much due to the existence of language barriers.

Hence, Mirchev had smartly utilized non-verbal cues we are familiar with in the making of his video. Indeed, communication experts have classified these as universal codes. For example, at 0.47 min, when both fleas trudged with their tongues out in the beginning, you knew they were two starving and dehydrated fleas. Even if you were to MUTE the volume during their short squabble (at 1.50 – 2.08 mins), Blue Flea’s laughter to oneself, Green’s Fleas wide sweeping of arms to indicate the “the whole doggy” is his, followed by clenching of fists, narrowing of eyes, and forward-leaning to each other, you knew a fight was going to ensue. No matter what culture you are from, you would interpret these cues similarly.

However, critics do argue that not all nonverbal cues are universal. I do acknowledge this fact, as different cultures worldwide result in different communication styles. Have you had a bad experience where a friendly gesture failed to convey your intended message because of cultural differences? For example, eye contact is associated with sincerity in some societies, while being regarded as a hostile stance in others. Do share an “interesting” occasion you encountered with everyone to enlighten us all! 

Furthermore, one knows how a picture speaks a thousand words. An action, a million? Nonverbals are highly favoured by the media. They are often used in commercials, print-ads, and cartoons because they reach a bigger audience  and are usually more interesting than droning spoken messages.

However, one has to note that how interesting your nonverbals can get takes skill too. When communicating, you wish to capture both the voluntary, as well as involuntary attention of your listeners. Here’s one extreme example I found, submitted to AniBoom’s competition too:

Nonverbals are nevertheless an important part of communication, but how important it is, as well as how it is interpreted and used, differs for everyone. I hoped you have learnt a fair bit on NVC today.  Maybe my article even changed your opinion on nonverbals. (Did it?)

Gunslinger Girl and Playstation HOME

This holiday weekend Playstion will be giving a free download of the first episode of season two. You can also watch it streaming in Playstation HOME in the laystation Theater. While at the theater you can check out a new music video by Shakira and the latest episode of Pulse. Gunslinger Girl is a show about young girls on the brink of death, saved by a secret government organization, given mechanically engineered bodies and erased their memories and traind them to kill terroist. Since I only saw the first episode this is all the information I can give.

Kastle Comics is LIVE

Sarah White is the creative mind behind the popular online comic, Kastle Comic. The comic is pretty much real-life events from her new life in Texas. The new series has new characters, her sister Mandy and Mandy’s husband Cody. Missing the older characters from the comicbook store? Well one, Wess, made a recent appearence so we can probably expect to see one of them every now and again. Want to know more about Sarah well this excertp is from her “About” page on the Castle Comic site.

“Sarah White: That’s me! I’m the main character, of course. Most of the stories are told from my perspective. I love reading comics and fantasy novels, drawing, and playing video games. Hola  a todos, yo soy Heichman y no El Amigo Gay usurpando la cuenta de Heichman, no vayan a creer lo contrario. Yo, Heichman, les regalo un par de videitos bien cabrones que me roló un buen amigo. Las animaciones están bien chidas.

El Amigo Gay, que por cierto, no soy yo, porque yo soy Heichman, una vez me contó que era fan del Holocausto. De ahí que haya derivado en su extraño gusto por las películas de zombies, una desconocida afición por el cine de guerra (Schindler’s List, Full Metal Jacket, Letters From Iwo Yima, Patton, etc. etc.) y lo mucho que gusta de ver cine de destrucción holocaustica futurista, mas que nada, por esa sensación semiescalofriante que resulta de ver los monumentos mas representativos de una cultura o un país, así como ciudades enteras hechas mierda. Por eso que él este tan emocionado porque ya va a salir 2012 de Roland Emmerich. La sensación que provocan esas imágenes del fin del mundo es algo que no se podría explicar. Al menos eso me dijo el Amigo Gay. Mas o menos de eso trata este video.

Este solo puedo decir que tienen que verlo y cagarse de la risa. Bonito Documental mi lic.
