Thanks to youtube, music videos may no longer have a place on television but they have been more accessible (and arguably more popular) on the internet. For the past year, artists have further experimented with this unique art form in plenty of effective ways. These are the top 10 Music Videos of 2009.

10. Every Time I Die – Wanderlust

For about four minutes, Keith Buckley walks in on some seriously grotesque yet psychedelic imagery while the rest of the bands rocks out like crazy. Not only was the video pretty cool, but it showed off some of the unbelievable album artwork before it was in stores.

9. Matt and Kim – Lessons Learned

Remember the hilarious shock value of Blink-182’s video of “What’s My Age Again”? Yeah, multiply that by 100. Matt and Kim streak in the middle of Times Square and right at the very last moment, Kim gets hit by a bus. It’s funny as all hell. I just want to know how they were able to get away with this.

8. Manchester Orchestra – I’ve Got Friends

The intentionally aged look gives the video a unique style many don’t see in the music video format. Plus the hilariously bizarre concept starring a guy in a bear suit and haunting apparitions of the band members makes it stand out even more.

7. Animal Collective- My Girls

Freak-folk pioneers, Animal Collective, blew up like crazy this past year thanks to a breakout album and the fantastic indie hit, “My Girls”. The video features grooving silhouettes of the band mixed with a slew of crazy psychedelic visuals. The result is something that feels both retro and slightly futuristic with a slam of hip eye candy. Hipsters love this band for a reason and this video shows why.

6. fun. – All The Pretty Girls

fun. (the side project featuring members of The Format, Anathallo, Steel Train) is arguably the best new band of 2009 and they’ve got a great video to prove it. This hilarious homage to The Beatles that closes with a trio of singing piniatas makes it one music video that’s nothing short of… well… fun.

5. Lady Gaga – Bad Romance

Okay. So she’s weird… really weird. But let’s face it she’s probably the most unique artist in the mainstream music scene. Compared to the other pop princesses, she’s pretty damn good. Her video for her latest single is well, indescribable at times with outrageous outfits, even more outrageous but mind-boggling choreography, a plot that doesn’t really make any sense and a conclusion featuring a pyrotechnic bra and skeletal corpse. Uh…. sure? Yeah it’s out there… really out there, but it’s so weird that in a way, it’s absolutely genius. Not to mention, the visuals are just plain unbelievable at times. It’s been a while since a mainstream artist has freaked anyone out through music video and isn’t that why we like this format in the first place?

4. WHY? – These Hands/January Twenty Something

Jonathan “Yoni” Wolf (aka WHY?) makes some of the most emotionally compelling hip-hop and folk rock around. The video deals with the scenes of a car accident juxtaposed with Wolf’s soothingly evocative voice. The image of the old man with arrows shot all over his back surrounded by fog carrying the boy will forever be ingrained in my mind. Powerful stuff.

3. Mastodon – Oblivion

Mastodon’s latest concept record deals with elements of space and time so what better way to introduce the album than having a music video that takes place in space. The visuals are nothing short of gorgeous with some of the best visual effects I’ve seen in a music video in a long long time and the video deals with the terror, mystery and suspense of being alone in outer space. They say in space no one can hear you scream, but shred? That’s a completely different story.

2. Fall Out Boy – What A Catch, Donnie

Folie A Deux is arguably FOB’s best release since Take This To Your Grave and “What a Catch, Donnie” was one of the best tracks off of their recent (and probably last) album. So when we heard there was going to be a video for this song, we all knew it would be sweep us off our feet. On the surface, its a tale about a ship’s captain (Patrick Stump) befriending and eventually bidding farewell to a seagull. It’s only until the captain sees a boat sinking on the distance when we see what the video is really about.   Ultimately, the video is a huge metaphor for the band’s unfortunate hiatus, but by george they went out with a bang. We’ll miss you guys but maybe you can ditch Wentz come the reunion.

1. All Time Low – Weightless

Let’s face it. A lot of people don’t like All Time Low these days. Some people consider them sell-outs for being covered by MTV. Some people are turned off by the abundance of screaming teenage girls that swoon over Alex Gaskarth. Or frankly, some people just don’t like the punk-pop/powerpop scene. Well, ATL manages to get back at all the haters in the funniest way possible. In their video for their first single for Nothing Personal, the bands makes fun of pretty much everyone and everything from Twitter, to crazed teeny bopper fans and even themselves through bitterly frank statements followed by the ever-so appropriate phrase “Nothing Personal”. Top it off with a ridiculous over-the-top style and hilarious cameos by FOB’s Pete Wentz and Blink’s Mark Hoppus and you have one of the funniest vids in a while. Even if you hate ATL for whatever reasons you have, you can’t help but laugh at their complete mockery of the scene.

I’m back! I should have a bunch of stuff posted this week after a crazy past week (lotsa Cleveland bands!). So I guess I’m a week late on this, but I have actually gotten some time to listen to it before posting. I don’t think AnCo could have picked better music to end the year. After the psych-pop infused MPP, Fall Be Kind is a lengthy EP of blissful drones. The opening track, “Graze”, begins with soaring vocals over spontaneous ambiance, but truly opens up about half way through. And “What Would I Want? Sky” could definitely make a run for track of the year. The great thing about Animal Collective and it’s pretty obvious, is that they are constantly changing and are in no danger of ever sounding remotely the same. AnCp already has many releases under their belt, but they still have people anticipating every piece of music they touch, and that’s a tough thing to do

I’ll admit to being a fair(merri?)-weather Animal Collective fan, having failed to gain satisfactory entrance into the aesthetic realm of their first 9 years or so of output –  bands like early Mercury Rev, Boards of Canada, and maybe very early Sonic Youth, being about the only relevant stamps on my passport.

However, I’m in with the outcrowd in saying that their Merriweather Post Pavilion album is this year’s best release. Verily, it is a solution to a conundrum I broach quite frequently w/ compañeros who’ve lapsed catholic on the music scene. They say:

It’s crap these days. All these internet, computer-recorded bands (oops), w/ fat indie promotion accounts, clogging up the blogosphere w/ faddy pastiche. Many cite the late 80s / early 90s as a highwater mark of genre-bursting inflorescence that glowers down on today’s indie output, aurora borealis-like. Young bands now naively mine these rich skyveins and there’s nothing new under the sun.

Of course that is bollocks, spiced meagerly w/ truth. Not appetizing. It’s bento boxes  like the A.C. that demolish the premise. Mixing synthetic and acoustic instrumentation; relying on seamless deployment of loops, electronic beats, noise and atmosphere; emoting circular murmurs and shrieks conjoined with  sunny pop vocal hooks, rice, the Animal Collective makes you think its ecological music is the sound of things to come. If so, what a weird place we will be living in…

Now, I wish it were true. An earthquake might open terra firma and take the Disney Culture Industry down into some sequestering saline aquifer, allowing us all to heal. That’s doubtful of course, almost by definition, since what A.C. does is so nigh idiosyncratic. Alas. Now they’ve bookended 2009 with the release of their Fall Be Kind EP, excerpted above. It is just as good as Merriweather and a fantastic embodiment of EPitome.  “What Would I Want, Sky” samples a Grateful Dead song, channels Mad Richard era Verve, and generally chimes along in “Empire State of  Mind”-beating uplift, since I don’t live in NYC, and I still have to face the day. In life, we can’t all be the Yankees.

This track has been recorded and released on their new EP Fall Be Kind. A bit more structured and clean in my opinion, but not necessarily better than the original. I might be a bit biased though, since the original was on repeat, on many of my summer nights.

Finally, the wait is almost over.

After a monster tour with Animal Collective it has become apparent that Noah Lennox is ready to release a rapid fire of songs on his next Panda Bear record.
It seems, as it always is with the members of Animal Collective, it is time for change. He has decided to ditch the samplers and long interwoven tracks sprawling several meditative beautiful minutes and, according to Noah, “do like 45s , with singles of two songs like an a-side and a b-side which are both pretty short.”
From the sounds of things it will be a very different structure with an entirely new instrumentation line-up and structural working.

It’s not an enjoyable process, trying to nail down what you think is the best album of the decade. It’s a drawn out, tedious ordeal. Some albums had that instant, ’slap-in-the-face amazing’ effect but grew tiresome to some degree while others discreetly worked their magic. For me, the task was made harder by the fact that only in the past year did I expand my musical horizons, stumbling upon gems such as Fingers Crossed by Architecture in Helsinki and Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavillion.

In making my choice however I chose to overlook my new romances and also, eventually, discarded post-rock favourites Mogwai and Explosions in The Sky. I was left torn between two acoustic beauties; Eddie Vedder’s soundtrack to Into The Wild and For Emma, Forever Ago by Bon Iver. Both are emotionally stirring pieces of art and appropriately short in duration so that to listen from start to end doesn’t feel a chore. The latter won in the end on the basis of the strength of each individual track, not a hint of filler here.

The album opens with the breathtaking Flume, a suitably subtle into as the simple guitar riff echoes softly before Justin Vernon’s mournful voice almost whispers, “I am my mother’s only one, it’s enough.” From this very instant the unashamedly personal nature of Vernon’s lyrics is apparent as is his powerful delivery. The impact made by Flume is carried throughout the remaining eight tracks.

My first encounter with Bon Iver came as I was flicking aimlessly through the countless music channels and I came across a sound like nothing I had heard before, The Wolves (Act I and II).  The opening notes allowed to resonate long enough to send a shiver down the spine before a chorus of voices proclaim, “someday my pain, someday my pain will mark you.” For two and a half minutes the song maintains it’s slow soulful sound before the tempo increases ever-so-slightly and the sense of building to a climax is notable as the cries of “what might have been lost” grow louder to compete with the bashing of symbols before the song exits as gently as it entered.

My selection is based purely on the music but the story behind the album is better than most and goes a long way to explaining the anguish which is tangible throughout. Vernon, in the aftermath of a break-up retreated to a log cabin in the snow to gain some perspective. He filled his days by hunting for his food, chopping firewood and allowing his inner turmoil inspire his songwriting. The initial recording was done in the cabin and even after being mastered the album retains it’s rawness. Throughout the nine tracks Vernon caresses soft guitar with high-pitched vocals dripping with emotion. I could preach about the beauty of each individual track as they all possess something different and impact in their own way but the album is best summed up by its piece de resistance, Skinny Love. I sometimes worry that so much attention is given to this track that it overshadows the other songs (I know I am a case in point) but it really is an oustanding piece of work and in my view one of the greatest pieces of music ever composed. It possess all the traits which define the album, the unique guitar sound, Vernon’s ability to vary his vocals to emphasise the emotion of the lyrics and an overall sound that makes you want to stop whatever you are doing and give your undivided attention to this wonderful music.

Animal Collective has released a new EP to end their legendary year entitled Fall Be Kind. This five song release features personal live favorites of mine ‘What Would I Want? Sky’ and ‘Graze’. They’re currently touring in Australia, and if you haven’t had a chance to see them live, I suggest you do so immediately, preferably in a smaller venue (they were awful at Bonnaroo this year).

R: Ya se nos notó en nuestro último discos4girls que andamos algo obsesionados con Bear in Heaven, así que estaba cantado que nuestra última  radiofónica en el No són hores de esta semana (en Onda Cero) tiraría hacia ellos como la cabra tira pal monte. Pues eso: nos sacamos de la manga un mini-informe sobre psicodelia pop que empieza con Animal Collective + Panda Bear, sigue con Grizzly Bear y acaba con Bear in Heaven (y ahora que los escribo todos seguidos me pregunto… ¿qué tiene esta gente con los osos?). Sea como sea, y como siempre, tenemos nuestras noticias habituales (seguimos con las obsesiones music4girls: Primavera Sound, Bis, Robert Pattinson…) y una agenda que descorcha el 9 Aniversario de la sala Razzmatazz (con Naive New Beaters a la cabeza) y sigue con un concierto que promete ser un rompe corazones en toda regla: The Antlers.

“לעולם יסדר אדם שולחנו במוצאי שבת אף על פי שאינו צריך אלא לכזית”

שבוע טוב! רציתי להתחיל לכתוב מבראשית, אך לא יצא לי כל כך מפאת חוסר זמן ויותר מעצלנות, אבל אני פותח את המלווה מלכה הראשון שלי ב-”ויצא”. הפרשה בה יעקב בן יצחק ורבקה בורח מב”ש לחרן.

הפרשה בה הוא חולם חלומות, החלום הראשון בתנ”כ. ויותר מכל מבחינתי, הפרשה בה הוא פוגש את רחל ומתאהב בה במבט ראשון, כמיטב כל סיפורי האהבה באשר הם.

גם אני יצאתי מב”ש כמעט לפני שלוש שנים, זו הייתה סוג של בריחה מההורים, הגעתי לתל אביב מצאתי בית, התאהבתי והתאכזבתי. איכשהו הסיפור של יעקב קשור לזה שלי, אין בו הרבה קווים מקבילים, לא עבדתי 14 שנים בשביל האישה שאהבתי וגם לא אעשה זאת.

 כמו שכבר אמרתי אין הרבה קווים מקבילים. החלום שחולם יעקב מסופר בתחילת הפרשה הוא סוג של התגלות אלוהים אליו ויעקב ירא מחלום זה, כמעט חסר אמונה אבל יותר מהכל הוא מפחד, הוא רוצה לרשת את אביו יצחק ולשלוט בעם היהודי אבל הוא נולד שני אחרי אחיו עשיו, תמיד נלחם על הבכורה.

חלומות, תמיד היו בעיני סוג של תעלומה בעצם לכולם, תמיד ייחסתי להם חשיבות. הסתבכתי ביני לבין עצמי כמנסה לפענח חלום. אנחנו חולמים מספר חלומות בלילה כך טוענים הפסיכואנליטיקנים כבר יותר ממאה שנה, החלומות הם השער אל התת מודע שלנו וגו’. אבל אני רוצה לדבר על החלום בהקשר המוזיקלי שלו, כלומר מוזיקה חלומית, מוזיקה שגורמת לך להרגיש כמו חלום, בין אם הוא טוב ומרכך ובין אם הוא סיוט ומרתיע.

Beach house היא להקה מארה”ב שפועלת מ-2007 הוציאה שני אלבומים, פועלת תחת תת הז’אנר שנקרא פופ חלומי ובינואר הקרוב תוציא את אלבומה השלישי, שבנתיים כבר דלף לרשת לפני שבועיים בערך, כשזה קרה שמעתי אותו שלושה ימים רצופים!! שלושה ימים רצופים!!.

קשה לי לכתוב ביקורת על אלבום שעוד לא יצא באופן רשמית וגם קשה לעשות את זה כשאתה הראשון, אז בחרתי לא לעשות זאת, ניתן למקצוענים ומביני עניין לנתח את האלבום הבאמת יפה שלהם.

 אבל בכל זאת אני אכתוב עליו כמה מילים. אני אתחיל דווקא בשיר מהאלבום הקודם, you come to me שיר שלמעשה מתכתב עם הז’אנר עצמו,  זה שיר אהבה על גבר שמגיע בחלומה של אישה, שלא ממש אוהבת אותו אבל כן רוצה להיות בקרבתו סוג של אהבה אפלטונית.

גם רחל לא ממש אהבה את יעקב פרשנים אומרים. הוא מציב לה תנאים בחלומה, אם אם לא עכשיו אז לא בכלל. וזה הזמן הנכון ואני חושב שהיא לא ממש משתכנעת, הכל בשבילה זה חלום.

לויקטוריה הסולנית יש קול חלומי, אניגמאטי, קצת מרכך וקצת מסתיר. האורגן המינימליסטי וכלי ההקשה שנשמעים מאד נמוך משחקים את כללי המשחק של התת ז’אנר הנפלא הזה.

באלבומם החדש,יש יותר גיטרות אבל גם הן נשמעות נמוך בלו פיי, מלוכלך ולא גמור, הסולנית מנסה את קולה במחוזות שלא ניסתה קודם ולעיתים בשירים מסוימים נשמעת כמו קיית בוש וכמו ניקו האגדיות.השירים יותר מלודיים,יש יותר להיטים משני האלבומים הקודמים.

אלבום כמעט מושלם בעיניי. חלומי. מומלץ.

השבוע במקרה נתקלתי במשהו שכתב אלמוג בהר, משורר שהוציא ספר שירה בשם “חוט מושך מן הלשון” שזה ספרו השני.

“אדם פודה את נפשו במעשים קטנים.בזכרונות שהוא זוכר כשכולם שוכחים, בפצעים שהוא סובל כשכולם שמחים, בשתיקות שהוא שותק כשכולם צוחקים, בחיוכים שהוא מחייך כשכולם שותקים, בסדקים שהוא עוצר כשכולם ממשיכים, בראיות שהוא אוסף כשכולם משליכים, בפתחים שהוא מגלה כשכולם מסתירים, בשכחה שהוא שוכח כשכולם זוכרים, אדם פודה נפשו במעשים הקטנים.”

אולי בלוג זה סוג לפדות את הנפש ואולי לא, אבל כן אני מזדהה עם הדברים שכתב אלמוג בהר. כששאלתי עצמי למה בלוג, עניתי בעיקר בשביל הנפש, תחביב ואז מחקתי ועניתי לעצמי שאני רוצה שכמה שיותר אנשים יקראו אותי. אולי בלוג זה באמת סוג של לפדות את הנפש.

ועכשיו לאוכל

תמיד אנחנו זוכרים את הפעם הראשונה, תמיד אני גם דואג לקשט אותה ולהפוך אותה לרומנטית. הפעם הראשונה שאמרתי לעצמי, אני רוצה לבשל הייתה כאשר צפיתי בתכניתו של אייל שני ושל שחר סגל “אוכל למחשבה” אשר שודרה בערוץ 8 באחת התכניות ביקש אייל שני משחר סגל לעשות מרק, אחרי כמה דקות הוא הבין שהוא נכשל והרס את המרק ואז בא אייל אמר לו” זה המרק שלך וזה יהיה טעים ולא הרסת כלום” ומיד הוא הכניס המון פטרוזיליה והמרק יצא מעולה, ככה אני מאמין.

 מאז אני מנסה לבשל ולאפות. הנה מתכון קטן שהמצאתי, ואני קורא לו ברוקולי, ברוקומיני ובשר בקר.

המצרכים:

500 גר’ בשר בקר

750 גר’ ברוקולי

250 גר’ ברוקומיני

3 שיני שום

שמן זית

שמן קנולה

 

למרינדה

כף וחצי סויה

3 כפות קורנפלור

חצי כף שמן קנולה

פלפל שחור

מלח גס

2 כפות חומץ יין לבן

וגם אפשר רוטב בלסמי

 

אופן ההכנה

מאדים את הברוקולי והברקומיני, עד שהם נהיים רכים.מסננים ומניחים בצד.

חותכים הבשר לרצועות דקות דקות. שמים בצד

חותכים קצוץ את שלושת שיני השום

למרינדה:

שמים בקערה 2-3 כפות קורנפלור, 2-3 כפות רוטב סויה ומעט חומץ יין לבן. מלח גס ,שמן זית פלפל שחור ומערבבים עד שנוצרת תערובת צהבהבה, אפשר להוסיף רוטב בלסמי.

מטגנים בשמן קנולה את השום הקצוץ. טובלים השר במרינדה ואז מניחים אותו במחבט, אחרי 10 דקות עד 15 דקות כשדואגים להקפיץ הבשר. מניחים את הברוקולי והברק ומיני לעוד חמש דקות. וזהו.

אפשר להגיש עם אורז מאודה.

פשוט קל וטעים.

 סיפורי סבתא

פעם בשבוע אני נוהג לחזור לב”ש ולבקר את סבתי שתחייה, סבתא פורטונה.

שנים שאני נוהג לעשות זאת והשיחות שלי איתה תמיד מגיעות לאותו נושאים והם אוכל,אהבה ופריד אל עטראש היום אחרי שנים, סבתא שלי מסכימה לי שאבשל בעצמי את האוכל שלי ולא אשתי לעתיד, היא אפילו מתייעצת איתי.

 השבוע סבתא  קנתה תבלינים, אבל בגלל שהיא זקנה ולא ממש רואה שכחה איזה תבלינים קנתה היא ביקשה ממני לזהות ולשים בקופסא המתאימה וכך יצא שאני טועם מריח נוגע מציין את שם התבלין וסבתא שלי אחריי מאשרת או לא אבל בעיקר מאושרת. אישור זה סוג של אושר.

בעקבות כך סיפרתי לה סיפור ששמעתי מג’ימי אוליבר באחת התוכניות שלו. הוא סיפר שפעם באנגליה היה מחסור בזהב וביהלומים והגברים, במקום לקנות יהלומים או זהב, קנו תבלינים כדי שיוסיפו לארוחות שהן מבשלות לגברים. זה הקסים אותה הסיפור הזה, זה הזכיר לה שסבא היה זה שקונה את התבלינים וקצת חיזק את הסיפור של ג’יימי אוליבר.

 בזמן האחרון מחירי הזהב מרקיעים שחקים כמאמר הקלישאה.הוא קרוב את לשבור שיאים ולהמשיך לעלות הפרשנים אומרים שזה הזמן הכי טוב לקנות זהב. אני בעד תבלינים.

שיר השבוע

השבוע יצא אי פי חדש לאחת מהלהקות הכי חשובת בעשור אנימל קולקטיב. השיר הראשון של האי פי fall be kind מתקשר לי לחלומו של יעקב כשהוא ראה סולם הנוגע בשמיים וראה מלאכים עולים ויורדים ואלוהים מבטיח לו את הארץ המובטחת.

 כשהחלום מסתיים במקום להיות מאושר ושמח יעקב חושש וחייו ושואל את עצמו שאלות.

 השיר תקוע לי במוח ולא עוזב אותו. הוא מתחיל בקריאה שאני לא מצליח להבין או לתרגם(עמכם הסליחה) וממשיך בשיר מקסים בפזמון השואל ועונה יחדיו.בשיר תוהה הדובר אם הוא בדרך הנכונה, אם הדרך שהוא בחר היא הנכונה אם הייעוד שלו זה אכן הייעוד שלו והוא מתבלבל ואולי נופל, נשמע מוכר. שיר טוב.

 המלחמה על האוכל

בשבוע האחרון נלחמים עלית שטרואס ואסם נגד רשת השיווק שופר סל, מי שלא יודע לשופרסל יש מוצרים משלה, ממרח שוקולד משלה, פסטה משלה וכד’  והם מסתירים את המוצרים של החברות הנ”ל. ביננו אף מהמוצרים לא ממש טעים.

הצחיק אותי מאד אייל שני בתכנית לילה כלכלי בערוץ 10 כשנאלץ לעשות מבחן טעימה ולהשוות בין שני הגופים הענקיים. שימו לב מה הוא אומר על השוקולד.

אל  רענן שקד, מכתב קצר

אתמול פורסם ב7 ימים בידיעות אחרונות ראיון שלך עם משה פרץ, כתבת שם שאתה לא אוהב מוזיקה מזרחית וזה בסדר, כתבת שאתה לא מבין את המוזיקה וחושב שכל השירים נשמעים אותו הדבר.

 אחד הדברים הכי מעצבנים אותי, זה כשאומרים שהשירים נשמעים אותו דבר, זה קצת מזלזל ומראה על חוסר בקיאות.

אני מודה גם לא מת על מרבית השירים בז’אנר הזה, אבל במקרה יצא לי לשמוע את אלבומו האחרון של משה פרץ(אחותי מעריצה שלו) וכמוך רענן, לא נפלתי אבל משיר אחד כן,לא רק שנפלתי הוא גם מרגש אותי מאד, כי זה שיר טוב מדבר בשפה של הז’אנר שלו, חסר יומרות, עיבוד טיפה יותר מגוון משאר השירים שמושמעים. שיר אהבה פופי מתוק וקיטשי כמו שזה צריך להיות.

אחרון

Stereogum  מפרסם את רשימה של 25 אלבומים שהוא הכי מצפה להם שייצאו ב2010 ואכן רשימה מכובדת ומעוררת ציפייה, אני הייתי מוסיף לרשימה את ארקייד פייר ואת סיגור רוס.

בשבוע הבא אאפה עוגה, ואנסה לסכם את העשור שלי במוזיקה, בנתיים תוכלו לעשות את זה במסגרת תוכנית הרדיו האלטרנטיבית הכי טובה שיש היום בסקאלה, הקצה.כל יום ראשון ושלישי מ-22:00 עד 0:00 מוזיקה משובחה.

I have a new unsigned band hailing from Brighton. They go by the name :Kinema:. They will be releasing an ep in February. Until then, we’ll have to enjoy their clean synthpop cover of Animal Collective’s song “My Girls“. You can also hit up their
Myspace page and listen to another song as well.

After I listened to the two songs, I’m seeing a lot of potential. I’m anxious to hear the ep. They remind me of The Whitest Boy Alive.

sorry but ive had this ep for the last week at least, ive just been too lazy to post about it.

i feel the ep has to have a couple of listens to get into. ‘what would i want, sky?’ is clearly the stand out track of the bunch with pitchfork giving it a perfect 10/10, personally i wouldnt rate it that high but it is some of their best work, very easy to listen to and extremely easy to get into.

with everyone coming along to the auckland show next week you have a little over a week to download, listen, learn and love these tracks.

Animal Collective just put out their much anticipated “Fall Be Kind” EP which follows up their critically hand jobbed “Merriweather Post Pavilion”. The 5 track EP includes the first licensed Grateful Dead sample in “What Would I Want? Sky”. AnCo’s seamless integration of the short vocal sample into the song results in a relationship that is more symbiotic than overpowering. The EP isn’t so much of a new direction for AnCo, but more of an afterthought to the full length, which is fine. Extension is always > regurgitation. (Via Electronic Takeover)

Continuing their critically acclaimed LP release in the opening week of 2009, Animal Collective return to cap off  year that they could just as easily claim theirs, as releases of EP’s, LP’s, and videos spanning over their lengthy career. Once again Animal Collective steer their sound in another direction as much of the EP is mellow and smooth, more like “In The Flowers” over 25 minutes.

Much of the EP rides along slowly, still always managing to reach some sort of spectacular high point. The infamous “What Would I Want? Sky” is layered out in 3 vocal tracks, and more atmospheric backings, accompanied by blasting drums that come and go. This track transitions into a Merriweather Post Pavilion styled pop gem. Following along the slow pace is “Bleed” that features a “Suicide Underground” (off The Virgin Suicides soundtrack written by Air) vocal sample maybe?? Layered falsetto vocal tracks seem to be the common theme that stylizes Fall Be Kind EP, done by David Portner, who doesn’t like his name and prefers to be called Avey Tare.

Fall Be Kind EP is simply exciting if anything else. That’s dependent on whether this is a shift in direction that Animal Collective are going to take. Yet the EP seems more like a small mix of what they’ve learned from producing Feels and Merriweather Post Pavilion combined rather than something new altogether. It’s like if “Bees” and “Daily Routine” (2 fantastic Animal Collective tracks) got together to expand out an entire EP and this is the end result of what Animal Collective have learned from themselves. Hopefully the shape of more great things to come.
