Last night on my way to the grocery store after three miles of dirt roads to get to town, I saw a li

Last night on my way to the grocery store after three miles of dirt roads to get to town, I saw a little deer on the side of the road – it wanted me to spot him/her. He was injured. On a horse, the spot would be the stifle – and therefore the hoof wasn’t working yet there was a great amount of bend on the stifle itself. I stopped. This was not a frightened deer.

While I couldn’t say if I had sat there for very long that the deer would have eaten out of my hand, I will say – this deer wasn’t intimidated by me. It wanted me to see him. I heard gun shots all day I couldn’t help but to think that it was a gunshot wound and of course I made up that it lost its mother to a hunter.

The wound wasn’t fresh, it wasn’t even oozing. Swollen, yes. And this little deer was definitely negotiating the hind leg like it had figured this out. I stopped; felt awful made a few phone calls and carried on with my grocery store mission.

When I came home, I called Paws.org only to discover that they won’t be open until the a.m. I contacted other groups and learned a lot.

I thought to myself, I have an empty stall, I could rehab. However, this deer is two miles away. How would I get this adolescent deer into a horse trailer if I could talk a friend into helping me?

I kept calling, only to discover lots about deer. I really thought about the deer video I posted a week and a half ago – a deer as a pet. I thought heck – I’m already octomom of horses, dogs, cats, what a deer is going to break me? Not.

The truth is my better instinct kicked in. I watched the deer, he had little safe spots. Someone (can’t remember whether it was Sarvey Wildlife Center or the Second Chance Wildlife Care Center in Arlington, or possibly even another group) thought that because I got out of the car and so close to the deer, perhaps it already had been fed by humans.

I also thought to myself at some point, live and let live – definitely do not chase – 6:00 pm Sunday night in Carnation is not high traffic, yet, I would hate to be trying to do something and drive the deer into traffic.

No matter how painful it is, nature has a way of correcting itself. As sweet as this deer was, the doe eyes – yet youthful, those crazy radar ears, the sweetness of the being, this deer has its own trajectory, contract, outcome that I have nothing to do with. Today I made an impact the size of one breath saying I’d love to help you and I could feel it acknowledge my intent by not running off.

However, and this is why I write this, I learned tonight by wildlife experts there is actually a disease – I believe called White Muscle disease that occurs for injured deer. You see a deer that has no experience with humans that is beyond the spotted stage (this deer was beyond the spotted stage – probably between 4-7 months) will not imprint to humans for help.

So baby still with spots orphan deer can do well in our environment and be fine to return to the wild after a few bottles. Any other deer can go into fight or flight and never come out of that state. They will fight and fight – even if I had a horse trailer with me – I would have sparked perhaps the onset of a disease. Once they are no longer in this fight state – it still triggers this disease. This bizarre disease or condition is called: ‘white muscle’ (or something like that) disease and it makes the muscles break down and eat themselves from staying in flight mode for too long.

As long as it is exposed to the condition that created the flight or fight status, it will not come out of that state.

I’m glad my instinct had me observe from a far this particular deer’s activity as I watched it go into a pasture through the opening in a fence. This was not new, it was familiar. I know where this deer is even now, not far from what it obviously perceives as a safe spot.

My guess is based on horse knowledge is that something in the hoof is not working based on the puncture (bullet) wound to the stifle area. The woman on the phone at Sarvey said we can only hope that area is a safe spot for that deer and that it will heal itself. A tendon or ligament injury like that takes time and we’ll see how kind this winter is.

I will say this about that deer, it is very smart and intuitive. It hid for other cars, but not for me. It found an exact spot in a barbed wire fence to fit through. It was eating leaves and grass under the frost every time I got close. And it was not skinny.

We just lost our Animal Control here due to lack of funding – so calling them was not an option. If the deer were in worse shape – Game and Wildlife would have been the right call. Because the wound wasn’t fresh, this deer has figured something out –

I had to look up in Ted Andrews Animal Speak – Deer: Gentleness and Innocence – Gentle Luring to New Adventure.

The wound wasn’t brand new and it wasn’t terribly old. Let’s see that wound heal, the hoof work and that deer carry on. And by reading this – you’ve been exposed to your own possible gentle admission of your new adventure……….what will that be in this New Year?

Blessings, Joan

Well, I decided it is time for me to blog about my connection with animals and the things I observe about my own pets and local strays, squirrels, rabbits, and other backyard critters. I was inspired to do this by a book I am reading, “Animals as Guides for the Soul” by Susan Chernak McElroy. She writes about how the animals in her life have inspired her and are central to her spirituality. I pretty much feel that animals are central to my own spiritual growth and without them, I would be completely lost.

St. Francis is an inspiration to me because he was a protector of nature and animals. He was also, it seems, able to communicate with animals. While St. Francis is an inspiration to me, I believe that my spirituality is influenced more by Native American/Pagan ideals than it is by Christian teachings. However, I will discuss all of this in future blogs…

from my friend Stephanie, the “Zen Cowgirl”. Boy, is she right on the money with this one!

Are you thinking about attending a horse bodywork seminar? Perhaps going to a tack fitting clinic? Or how about participating in an animal communication workshop?

If so, good for you. And also, be forewarned!

Once you have learned something new that will improve your horse’s life, your horse will know. Your horse will read your mind and know what you know. A previously forgiving horse who patiently put up with an ill-fitting saddle will likely buck you off after the tack-fitting clinic.

The swaybacked horse who has always come right up to you in the pasture will now kick up her heels and run the other way when she sees you coming if you don’t plan on doing bodywork that day.

And the horse unhappy in his job but doing it well? He’s likely to make an ass of you at your next horse show … especially since you went to an animal communication workshop but refuse to heed his pleas for a new career.

What the Heck is Going on Here?

Unfortunately, many a horse lover has had to discover the hard way that our horses are telepathic, they can read our minds, and they know what we know. Somehow most horses are willing to forgive us in our ignorance, but the minute we learn something that will make their life better, they expect us to use that knowledge … right now!

So if you are planning on opening the door of knowledge for better horse health care, better horse feed, and better horse management, beware! Once that door is opened, it can never be slammed shut again. Your horse will make sure of it!

A friend of mine is an animal communicator, and she tells me that she often notices that people who communicate with their animals, and then fail to take action based on the resulting conversation, tend to pay a big price. Whether it’s the dog peeing on the carpet to indicate that he’s “pissed off” or the horse going into a bucking frenzy, forgiveness isn’t the picture.

Marcus Aurelius & Stephanie

Marcus Aurelius: A Case In Point
Marcus, my first big-time jumper horse, was hugely forgiving and easy to ride when he first came to me. We did well at shows, won championships all over the place, and I thought we had a great relationship. Unfortunately, Marcus was a cribber, which affected his teeth, spine, and performance. Thinking that cribbing was bad, I used to try all kinds of techniques to stop him from cribbing. Nothing worked. He continued to crib but he never seemed to resent my efforts to stop him.

Then I had the brilliant idea to try animal communication. During the conversation I asked Marcus what it would take for him to stop cribbing. His reply was short and sweet: “How about if I asked you to give up eating?” In other words, he was telling me that cribbing was an essential part of his nature and his life.

Despite hearing this, I continued to try to stop him from cribbing. Now he definitely resented my efforts. He started turning his butt to me when I went to catch him, and broke as many objects in his stall as possible. He issued his strongest complaint, though, by refusing to jump at the shows. Neither my trainer nor I could get him to jump around courses reliably, even on courses he used to love.

Back to the animal communicator we went. Marcus made his demands clear: “Let me crib or forget showing, and count on having to replace everything in my stall often!” Wow, was that clear or what? So thereafter, we let him crib. He started doing his job again and loving it.

He now lives with my former trainer, Sally Francis, in Texas, has his own cribbing tree, and a couple of cribbing buddies. These days he is one happy cribbing camper. He still takes adult amateurs and small children around three foot courses and, as long as he’s allowed to crib, all is right in the world with him. Yes, his teeth suck but he’s very happy!

I’ve had similar experiences with almost all of my horses, especially the mustangs. They are more forgiving to start with (when I’m ignorant) and much less forgiving later. They have elephantine memories, which they use often. But once you give then what they want, they will also work harder and better for you than most domestic horses.

In any case, consider this article a “buyer beware” to the horse lover who wants to learn more about horse health care, training, tack, or you-name-it. I’m all for it. Definitely go for it and learn as much as you can. Just be prepared to use what you learn or you’ll pay, pay, and pay!

Amazing job opportunities for rescue dogs – helping Iraq vets with PTSD. If the shelters are overrun – doesn’t it make sense to take these lovely dogs and give them great jobs? We have people coming home every day with PTSD – let’s put those dogs to work!

Right now shelters are at an all time high with occupancy and adoption and donation rate low…….let’s start funneling the donated money to profile and then train the dogs that fit the bill for this type of work.

That’s my 2 cents worth for the day…..blessings, Joan

Scottish terrier Sadie wins AKC national dog show – Pet Tales : The Orange County Register.

Look at that Sadie – so serious about her job and yet secretly, those Scotties can be so impish. (Okay not so secretly if you’ve had a Scottie.) I grew up with a Scottie. I love Scottie’s. Her name was Penny – she was my very first dog – we picked her out of the litter at Thanksgiving from my cousins when I was seven and I slept in the back of the car with her all the way home from Spokane to Bellevue Wa (about 5 hours). We had another dog – Rini an elderly Manchester Terrier – Penyy wasn’t a big hit with Rini but she was my dog nonetheless.

I will always have a thing for Scotties. My cousin John (the same cousins) has a great Scottie named Sherman. Oh he gives my Olivia and Isabella a run for their money. He’ll pretend to play the game of letting them think it’s their house – but if there’s a ball – he’s going after it and may the best dog win.

Love the name Sadie – obviously the best dog won!!

p.s. remember that Saturday Night Live sketch – the famous quote – “if it isn’t Scottish – it’s crrrrrrraaaaaaap!”

p.p.s. I have blogged below about my new Cat Francesca potentially being the reincarnated Alexandria – my old cat – well I’ve often wondered if Olivia my 1/2 Border Collie is a reincarnation of Penny. Oh more random thoughts of an Animal Communicator…..another post on pet reincarnation is clearly in the future says the pet psychic!!

Is animal communication fun? You bet it is!

I’ve written a lot of posts about the pitfalls and obstacles encountered by the person on the path to practicing animal communication, the ethics that must be carefully observed, the difficulties involved in maintaining a “clear channel,” and so on. Enough already! Let’s focus on the good stuff!

No two ways about it: animal communication is a barrel of fun. You’re an animal lover, right? If you’re like most of us animal lovers, you probably have at least a few at home, perhaps of several different species. You probably enjoy spending as much time as possible with them and find them to be some of, if not THE, best companions you know.

If you’re an animal lover then it’s probably obvious to you why doing animal communication for a living would be fun. But here are a just a few of my favorite reasons:

1. You get to meet a lot — and I mean a LOT — of interesting different animals who you’d probably never have an opportunity to meet otherwise.

2. You get to meet a lot of interesting people too and make lots of new friends!

3. You learn a lot about how different personalities operate, and this ends up being very helpful in your own life. Plus, it’s just downright fascinating.

4. You get to help solve lots of problems for animals, which often means their lives become a lot better.

5. You get lots of praise and thanks from the folks you help — always a good feeling.

6. You have many opportunities, at animal shelters, etc., to do pro bono work and be of service in a unique way — and nothing makes one feel better than reaching out and helping others in need.

7. As an animal communicator you’re in business for yourself. You can create your own schedule, work from home, and call the shots. Yippee!

8. Offering the gift of animal communication, whether through a session or a class, often helps open up new horizons for other people, broadening their outlook on the world and enhancing their own understanding.

9. You can choose your own area of specialty in regard to the kinds of cases you take and can therefore practice what you like to do best, AND what you’re best at doing!

10. This is not top of the list, but it IS necessary, and yes, it is fun too: You can make money.

There are lots more things that can be added to this list of why doing animal communication is fun, and I’m sure you can think of several that are unique to you and your circumstance. Yes, there are lots of things to watch out for if you practice, but you’ll learn those along the way. So if you’re tempted to start an animal communication practice, I’d say go ahead and dive in! You’ll have lots of fun!

Empathy — the trait of feeling what others are feeling — is something most of us possess

Empathy — the trait of feeling what others are feeling — is something most of us possess to one degree or another. And often we aren’t even aware of when it’s happening. We may wonder why we’re feeling so blue after an outing to the grocery store, when we started out the day feeling on top of the world. Could be because we picked up some moody emotions from a few folks in the super market.

Most animal communicators possess a high degree of empathic awareness, which can be very helpful in understanding what is going on with the various animals they talk to. But a skilled communicator has learned to discern when the emotions she is feeling are hers and when they are the animal’s, AND how to clear the ones that don’t belong to her once a communication session is over. Using one’s empathic awareness this way takes a lot of understanding and skill and doesn’t come overnight. And if it is not harnessed and properly understood, it can wreak havoc in one’s life. What follows is a very sad example of how it literally ruined one person’s life.

Several years ago there was a lovely woman in one of my beginner-level animal communication classes who was quite clear that she wanted to learn the skill in order to practice it professionally. I will call her “Grace” because she was a lovely, mature woman who obviously had great compassion and wisdom.

But as the day wore on and we got into practice sessions with animals, I noticed an odd thing. No matter what animal Grace connected with her feedback was filled with grief, and she would be in tears while conveying the sad impressions or messages she had received from the animal. These dismal emotions were the only ones she was able to pick up from the animals, regardless of their situation. I didn’t want to single her out by identifying what I thought was going on for her, so instead I took this opportunity to familiarize the class with what I call the Velcro Effect — explaining how similar vibrations in two different individuals magnetize each other. Grace clearly had a lot of grief and sadness in her psyche, so those were the emotions she tended to identify with in others, including the animals.

Needless to say, by the end of the class poor Grace was emotionally devastated and totally drained. She did seem to understand the lesson about how empathy can be like Velcro, and how that had affected her practice sessions with the animals, but I was worried about whether she would be able to internalize this and use it to protect herself from taking on so much heaviness from the world around her.

I never saw or talked to Grace again, and not long after the class I received a call from one of the students to let me know that Grace had committed suicide. I was speechless and shocked, and very, very sad, but on some level I was not surprised. I had clearly seen that Grace was a “psychic sponge” who absorbed much of the negativity and sadness she came in contact with. She was probably severely depressed, and not just due to her own personal issues. If she did not understand this, and was not able to get the right kind of help for it, it is no wonder that her life became unbearable to the point of wanting to end it.

I prayed for Grace’s soul and that she might find peace. And I also felt a lot of pain in wondering if I could have done more to help Grace learn to manage her empathic gift so it would not have been her undoing. I wish I had reached out to her more actively after our class was over.

Animal communication is a hot topic at the moment with many owners wanting to have a better understanding of their Pet.

The question on many pet owners lips is; How can I communicate with my dog, or how can I communicate with my cat.
Elaine Downs and Sue Reid are expert animal comunicators in the UK.

The video above is from a very satisfied dog owner.

So How Do You Communicate with Animals?

There are many ways you can communicate with animals. Different species will respond better to different styles. The ones listed below apply more to mammals like dogs, cats, rabbits and horses and intelligent birds than to fish, reptiles and amphibians.

How many of these differt formats and ways are you using at the moment to communicate with your animal?

Play
Touch
Talking
Singing
Using particular objects
Using particular sounds
Dowsing
Telepathic communication

Do you play with your pet? If not, you should do so regularly for both your sakes. PLay is a wonderful activity and will help you connect at a much deeper level. Pets need exercise as well and that can be fun alongside all of its health benefits for all of you.

Pets of all kinds need exercise. Lack of exercise is responsible for many expensive and painful physical conditions. But play is also very useful as a form of communication. It allows you to create a harmonious bond with your companion.

Just taking the time to focus on your animal friend tells her so much. It demonstrates your love, commitment and caring. Especially if you use that time to project those feelings or talk about them, it can be a wonderfully communicative time.

Elaine and Sue have another site at animal communication. They are unique in their field as not only do they help individuals communicate with their pets but they also teach these same skills.

They run a number of animal communication workshops in the UK. These are often full so please book early to avoid disappointment.

Best Wishes

Well, nothing, really. The “Velcro Effect” is just what I call something that happens a lot between people and animals, or between people and other people for that matter.

It has to do with empathy. As defined by the online Mirriam-Webster dictionary, “empathy” is the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another.

I’ve talked a lot about empathy in previous posts, but in this post I want to describe how empathy can be like Velcro, so first I will tell you about my own experience when how this works was brought home to me in a BIG way. And it happened in an advanced animal communication workshop.

We were doing an exercise that we were not told the purpose of. Nine of us sat in a circle and each of us looked at the person on our left — naturally at the back of their head, since they too were looking to their left. We were to focus on the person for about 20 or 30 seconds and jot down the first 2, 3, or 4 impressions that came to us. We were not to wonder why, just jot down the impressions.

Suddenly the young woman on my right, someone I had never met before, burst into tears. She was so deeply aggrieved that she had to leave the circle and indeed was incapacitated for several hours following the exercise. Since I, like everyone else, still had no idea what this exercise was about, I didn’t know what had happened.

Once our instructor had helped this girl find a level of comfort and settle down in another room, she came back and we finished the exercise. We went around the circle, each of us reporting the impressions we had received while looking at the person on our left. Most of the words were things like “joy,” “nurturing,” “sadness,” “playfulness,” “service,” etc. Our teacher then asked me if I was grieving. I said no, but that I had been through a very deep and serious period of grief during the previous year.

She then explained what it was we were to learn from the exercise. I paraphrase here (and the Velcro analogy is mine):

When you are tuned-in to another being, the vibrations the two of you share the most at that time will come to the forefront and will be what each of you notices most about the other. Those vibrations magnetize each other and kind of stick together, like Velcro.

She then explained that the girl to my right was in a very deep period of grief, and, since I still had vestiges of grief left in my vibrational field, that is what she picked up the most. My grief, although quelled and in the past, triggered hers actively and caused her to fall apart.

Gee, did I feel terrible. But wow, what a lesson we all learned from that exercise.

How does this apply to animal communication? Well, if you are an empath, or one who has a lot of empathy, it means you are very tuned in to peoples’ and animals’ feelings. And, unfortunately, until you have learned how to control and manage your empathic ability, you are going to experience and feel the emotions and vibrations your subject and you share the most, which may have nothing to do with the subject at hand.

This is not a bad thing, and empathy is a great asset in animal communication. But it is really, really important to understand how it works and to beware of the Velcro Effect, since it kind of has a life of its own and can therefore interfere with what it is you are trying to learn from the animal you are talking to.

In my next post I will relate a very sad story indeed, about someone whose level of empathy became her undoing. Stay tuned.

Lost animals are truly the hardest piece of being an Animal Communicator. Many people think that the

Lost animals are truly the hardest piece of being an Animal Communicator. Many people think that they want to become an Animal Communicator because they wanted to go to vet school but they couldn’t handle the tragedies or the sick animals. Well, there are no shortage of tragedies as an animal communicator, the biggest one being – lost animals. Partly because there is no closure.

I discovered a missing piece to a puzzle tonight. I know working to help people find lost animals is so important. I know that sometimes people get closure – even if it means finding the body of their beloved. That is better than the unknown, the forever haunting “what if I had only braved the cold…..crawled under the house….bothered my neighbors a little more……”

Monday night in my Animal Education Teleseminar – my guest was Kat Albrecht, a true Pet Detective and founder of www.missingpetpartnership.org and she was so inspiring. She was inspiring for many reasons which I will cheerfully divulge.

However, the missing puzzle piece tonight after 14 years of lost animal work from the psychic world is this…..for those that get debilitated emotionally, or can’t for some reason put some effort into finding your animal when they are lost – you must get out there and look. So many people give up right away thinking a coyote or a car got them. That is less the case than not. Then these animals become part of the feral community and/or the overrun shelters…..and adoption is at an all time low. I always do my homework before a call – but that was a delayed unexpected deep seated raison d’être for continuing lost animal work.

I’m working my tail off to help people keep forever homes through consultations, speaking and my book . . . so even for me tonight there was a major lightbulb. Really encourage at all costs people to get out and look – no matter what defeated excuses they give. And as I have ALWAYS said to clients, Kat confirmed – it’s a time to knock on your neighbors doors and ask if you can look in their yard.

************I lost my beloved Alexandria two years ago (after 13 years), so this was an especially important call. Alexandria was very much my personal emotional raison d’être. She and I had been together in LA, Seattle, Denver, Florida and back to Seattle. She could move and bounce like the best of them. She had been on 3 farms, 2 urban setting, one suburban setting a beach townhouse and beachhouse, ski condo’s guest homes and hotels…… she was always THERE. Her disappearance is a story for another blog – this should focus on Kat and her amazing detective work.

Kat’s site www.missingpetpartnership.org has an amazing amount of tips for lost animals. And I might add this is Kat’s raison d’être. Her passion and skill came into play as she was a forensics detective that used dogs and one of her dogs was lost. Her dog was not only her lifeline to her detective work, but also her baby. She used her retired detective dog to find the newer dog and the idea sparked for missing pets.

Most of my students in Communication with all Life University are coming to the animal communication certification program later in life, as a second career. Kat’s awesome passion, her pursuit, her doubt, and her determination is an inspiration to all. Almost everyone was inspired by her amazing perseverance and others of course are drawn to the detective aspect.

There are always amazing calls on my Animal Education Teleseminar series – the continuing education part of Communication with all Life University – but this one hit a chord for all for many different “raison’s”.
Blessings, Joan

Until a story was published about me in a local paper a few years ago, Norma had no idea animal communication was possible. But she and her husband Ed contacted me so that I could talk with their dog Hannah. This is her pictured on the right. She had some health problems, she was blind with cataracts and had bad infections in her ears. Ed and Norma wanted assurance that she wasn’t in pain. This beautiful girl with the sweet smile was not in pain, though the daily medication treatments stung her ears a bit.

They took her to a vet that told them that a surgery was possible, but risky for a dog Hannah’s age. Also it couldn’t be done in our area and Hannah would be in pain after the surgery. It was a very tough decision and a hard call for anyone to make. But Hannah had lived a good long life so Ed and Norma did what was best for Hannah. Rather than put her through the ordeal of a painful surgery to help, but not cure her ear problems, they chose to send Hannah to spirit. It was the best choice for Hannah.

Not only were Ed and Norma heartbroken, but Buddy their other Cocker and Hannah’s soul mate was devastated too. He told me he’d rather be in spirit with Hannah, he was so grief stricken. In their last few years together, Buddy had helped Hannah navigate their world. She had such trouble seeing because of her bad vision, that Buddy had been her, well, seeing eye dog. He missed her very much and wanted to be with her. This is not unusual. I’ve seen healthy animals either have accidents or die suddenly when their mate goes to spirit.

So shortly after Hannah left them, Ed and Norma went to the shelter and adopted Bugsy. He was a Boston Terrier who was in the same place they were. He had lost his human and was awaiting adoption by a new family. Bugsy had some health issues of his own because he too was an “elder dog”. He had cataracts that really distorted his vision. Bugsy literally had no future until Ed and Norma found him.

Gradually, everyone worked through their grief and got to know each other. It took some time, but Buddy and Bugsy began to really have a good time together. Buddy told me they were “a couple of old guys kickn’ around” – a line that has always made me laugh. Both “old guys” had arthritis in their hips, so Norma and Ed took them to the beach daily for a walk. And Bugsy was just what this family needed. I suggested a good supplement for the boys and their hips got stronger. Today they are very good friends. Bugsy has a loving home again, Buddy has a friend to knock around with, and Ed and Norma’s family is once again complete.

Buddy has not forgotten Hannah, nor has anyone in this family. I often wonder if Hannah was the catalysis who “urged” Ed and Norma to go to the shelter that day and find this wonderful guy. Bugsy told me he helped to heal his human that is now in spirit and now he’s helping to heal the hearts of this family. I think he’s done his job and earned his new life.

This is a story that is special to me. Hannah will always hold a special place in my heart. She was so kind and loving and never even let on to me if she was in pain. In fact I don’t believe she suffered at all. For one, animals don’t feel pain as humans think they do and two, well, Hannah really is one-of-a-kind. But then, so are Ed and Norma.

As for the old guys? They’re still enjoying daily walks on the beach that I know keep them younger and younger. These two are pretty great guys themselves. And they have their angel Hannah watching over them as they enjoy a second life together. Both of these dogs had decided this was the end of the line for them. But this new found friendship has changed everything. And it’s keeping everybody young.

I titled this post “Angels” because I believe that everyone, human and canine are all angels.

This person obviously adores her mule (and her mule adores her!), but would she make a good animal communicator? Maybe . . . and then again, maybe not.

Yes! ……… but … well, maybe NO. It depends on why you want to do it.

I know that question sounds really stupid coming from an animal communicator. ALL animal communicators obviously love animals. They do, they surely do. So how in the world could animal communication NOT be a really good thing for an animal lover? Before you decide that I’m making a heretical, anti-animal communication, statement here, please allow me to explain.

I can’t tell you how many times, when asked why they are interested in animal communication, I’ve heard my students say things like:

“I like animals soooo much more than people!” or

“I want to learn how to do animal communication because I don’t really like people that much.” or

“I feel like I understand animals so much better than I do people.” or

“I don’t relate to people very well.”

A big UH-OH is the silent response in my head when I hear this kind of remark among serious animal communication students — for at least a couple of major reasons. And what then follows, throughout our workshop, is a careful process of not only helping this type of student learn to communicate with animals, but also to become familiar with the many people-oriented pitfalls and obstacles she will face if she chooses to do animal communication professionally.

The main hurdle for the animal-lover/people-shunner who practices animal communication is that the profession, if practiced carefully, conscientiously, and ethically, requires working with people first and foremost. It is people who are going to contact the communicator for help and with whom most of the communication is going to take place. As stated in an earlier blog, it is the animal communicator’s job to serve as an intermediary and translator between people and their animals and to help resolve issues with diplomacy and compassion. NOT a role for the faint of heart, and certainly not for someone who doesn’t like people.

The second obstacle on the road to becoming an effective animal communicator for the devout animal lover is that they are probably so intensely in tune with animals that they have become empathic sponges. This means that they often feel everything the animal is feeling, and perhaps the people around them too. This can be a very valuable asset in interpreting an animal’s situation, but unfortunately most such empaths can’t separate their own feelings from those they are picking up from others so the resulting “translation” becomes a mish-mash of confused information, and their psyche becomes overly burdened with emotions that don’t belong to them. And there is no way a person in this state can remain clear enough to conduct an effective communique between a human and an animal.

So if you’re thinking about becoming an animal communicator because of how much you adore our furry, feathered, and finned friends, think twice . . . and think carefully. T’ain’t necessarily an easy road for the devoted animal lover.

We all remember days that are important in our lives. Our birthdays for example are a time of festivity. The day we get married is another milestone and the day our children are born. All of these are important to everyone and most women anyway I know remember these dates.

We also tend to remember sad anniversaries. The death of our parents, the day our divorces are final and for a lot of us, the day we lost a very important spirit that was close to us – our animal friends. This is that day for me, this the the second anniversary of the day we lost Bart. Rather than go into the whole detail of his life and passing, I will let you read the short biography on my website, here.

I recently worked with a client who was really hurting from the loss of her dear animal friend. He has been gone much longer than Bart and she doesn’t have the ability I do to have Bart’s wisdom still passed onto me.

So yesterday I got in the pool. When I am in the water, I am more able to freely hear animals here and in spirit. I heard Bart’s words coming through loud and clear. He told me that “heaven is not off in the clouds, but right here next to us.” In other words, our animal friends are not long gone and far away, but literally gathered around us when we need them and helping us to get through the same things they did when they were in body. Also Bart reminded me that there is no time where he is. He doesn’t observe this day the way I do – anymore. I think at the time he was very grateful to be leaving his body. But now he has a new “life” so to speak in death. He is working with animals that arrive, he is finding animals for me to talk with that stood by the sides of my clients, and he has his own lessons he’s learning.

I will have some sadness today, I won’t lie. But I also want to celebrate a cat that walked into my life and totally changed it for the most part. I’m still the “me” I always was, but I’m also now well aware of a gift that was lurking inside for the majority of my life. When this cat helped to bring that out, that is when life got very fulfilling.

Who could be sad at something like that?
