George Orwell turned out a great deal of writing in his lifetime but he is probably best known for his novels, Animal Farm and 1984. The latter book, a nightmarish vision of a totalitarian future, is required reading in many curricula today and lent the term “Big Brother” entirely new shades of meaning.

But there was a lighter side to George Orwell, fortunately, one that turned up in such works as his essay, A Nice Cup Of Tea. Being a good citizen of the United Kingdom, it’s no surprise that Orwell was fond of the beverage that has become so closely associated with those lands. But unlike many casual tea drinkers he was very opinionated about how tea should be prepared.

A Nice Cup Of Tea first appeared in the British newspaper, the Evening Standard, in early 1946. In the essay, Orwell notes, “the best manner of making it is the subject of violent disputes” but nonetheless is brave enough to offer “my own eleven rules, every one of which I regard as golden.”

While it would be redundant to cover each of these points here, given that the full text of the essay is so readily available, but a few items stand out. Among them are Orwell’s fondness for “Indian or Ceylonese tea” over Chinese varieties, which he feels does not offer much in the way of stimulation. Of course, given the Brits’ fondness, in general, for black tea, it’s probably not surprising that Orwell’s essay doesn’t even touch on other types of tea.

Other points of interest, tea should be made in small quantities, the pot (china or earthenware) should be warmed ahead of time and the tea should be made very strong. As far as the debate over which goes into the cup first – milk or tea – Orwell stands firmly on the side of the latter. And while he’s okay with adulterating tea with milk, Orwell minces no words when it comes to the question of sugar in tea, “how can you call yourself a true tealover if you destroy the flavour of your tea by putting sugar in it?”

No tópico em que o xeleléu Sanchez abriu para comemorar a anti-candidatura à Presidência da República do plagiador Plínio de Arruda Sampaio, foi suficiente eu apontar aqui na CA o que tudo indica que irá acontecer, isto é, o PSOL provavelmente vai apoiar a candidatura de Marina da Silva pelo PV, para que a trupe de sempre comçasse a fazer ares de constrangidos, que não sabiam exatamente disso, etc. Heloísa Helena já abriu o diálogo com Marina nesse sentido.

Somente imbecis despolitizados e alienados não percebem essa tendência. E vejam, isso porque eles se dizem militantes e supostamente vivenciam o cotidiano do partido.

The animals are getting restless. There is something coming from the west.

I am writing this down because I am afraid, and want documentation lest one day I vanish into thin air. I sense there is a strong force stirring up and I do not know where it comes from, or worse yet, where it is headed. Am I too blame? All I wanted was a pretty farm, an efficient one that was also aesthetically pleasing, but I worry these days that I am being punished. Was I abusing my power?

Let me back up a bit. A few days ago, I went out to the fields and saw that one of my two elephants had somehow turned around and was now facing west, instead of south. “Must be Zynga’s fault,” I thought. Zynga is the lanky young man that does the nitty-gritty things around the farm. I give him the layout of things that I want to do and he does it. I told Zynga to position the elephant back to its original place, facing south, which he did. The next day, to my shock, both elephants and all of my horses had turned around. They were now all facing west.

I studied their faces, to see if there was something different, but they had the same nonchalant, disinterested look in their eyes. It was like they were zombies or mechanical toys. Something had happened, and the fact that they did not seem to care was more disturbing than the actual change!

But I am getting ahead of myself. Perhaps this started even further back. Yes, yes! It all began the day Zynga told me that the animals could move. I don’t know how he figured it out; I had not noticed it before. But then, he was growing up so fast– he was no longer the small, disoriented boy that had to be reminded to feed the cows.  “So how do the animals move?” I asked Zynga. “If you tell them they can move, they’ll move,” he said. So I cleared out a large section of my field and created an open area where the animals could roam freely. At first, it was fun to see the animals move around on their own but it soon became annoying. They would go under trees making it difficult to harvest their produce; sometimes I had to relocate entire trees because I couldn’t see the animal underneath the leaves. They would also flock around in groups, especially the sheep. I would wake up and look out the window to see the sheep milling together in a huge white cotton ball at the edges of my fields.

I am somewhat of a design freak. Now that the animals were moving, I could no longer use them in my designs. For a long time, the animals had been a dual pleasure for me because they were not only a source of revenue, but also color pixels in which I could paint pictures in my farm/canvas. You may think me strange, but I am not the only one who does this. My friend Y, for example, has his black sheep in a great big circle, and my friend N used her crops to create a big S to support our local football team. If everyone does it, it is not strange, right? I even think Zynga played a part in nurturing my whimsies for using my farmland as a painting canvas. At first, there were only yellow hay bales, but he kept on finding new hay bales of different colors– green, white, gray, even pink. I was a bit skeptical of his intentions because with each hay bale, the price seemed to be going up and up, but then again, he is the only one who actually goes into town to scope out the wares, so I have no choice but to believe him when he gives me quotes for the products.

But I digress. I have wandered from my argument and will go back to the animals. Yes, the animals. So when I saw that the animals were milling around too much for my taste, I put them back into fenced pens, but gave them a little room to make up for the freedom– except for the horses, which I put into stalls. You’d understand my shock, therefore, when the day after I lined up the horses in the stall, one of the horses had somehow turned around and was facing the opposite direction!! It was baffling because I had arranged the stalls in such a manner, using hay bales and fences, so that the horses wouldn’t be moving, and yet they were, even when I told them to stay put.

Clearly, the animals are not listening to me. It’s not just me; my friend J also reported similar happenings at her farm. Are the animals finally letting out their pent-up frustrations? I am somewhat sympathetic; I try to give my animals more room, but I know people who keep their animals in very high population-density situations and no doubt that must have had some influence on their stress level.What would they do next? Would they ruin the crops– or even worse– take over the farmhouse?

When I told Zynga about my worries, he merely shrugged and suggested that if I did not like my animals moving, I had the option of buying topiaries instead. I swear, the more I think of it, this young man is becoming more devious about depleting my wallet! I’m sure at some point he’ll “find” some silk flowers for those who don’t like the work of planting and harvesting! More and more I worry about how he will take command of this economy. Perhaps we farmers should get together and devise some sort of open market where the price of produce is set according to supply and demand. With Zynga as our sole provider, how are we to know that we will be safe under his monopoly? How do I know what he is feeding the animals? They seem to be under his mind control.

Although I feel that Zynga is leading some silent revolution with the animals, I don’t know if I want to move. As always, larger questions are pushed aside as I get occupied with the everyday labor of planting, harvesting, fertilizing, and harvesting. There is always fruit to be picked, flowers to be cut. Thank goodness the shrubbery doesn’t grow (such a strange phenomena– must be genetically altered) or work would be doubled. It also is a pain that I can’t help my friends harvest their crops when they don’t have the time to do so. Nothing saddens me more than a withered crop.

I don’t want to leave my farm, but maybe it’s time to move on. Maybe I should get together a bunch of friends who are willing to relocate to a place where we have more control, and are allowed to have slaughter houses and smoking houses. I want to till plots that are not shaped as squares– is it so hard to ask for a tool that creates triangular plots? I also want to have a storage space for seasonal items so I don’t have to throw away my Halloween decorations, and some more clothes for myself. But all of these things depend on Zynga. I am the farmowner, yet there is very little control that I have.

I’ve barely blogged lately because I’ve busy, not because I have a life. Yeah, I had a paper I forgot about and a bunch of quizzes, and practice till 6. Plus I’m lazy and forcing myself to focus long enough to write can be difficult. I’m not sure what to write about.  I really haven’t been too into politics lately because I’ve been wrapped up in homework, activities, and personal drama.

Well I’ve been reading quite a bit. Just so everyone knows George Orwell is doubleplusgood. I don’t think I’ve ever recommended a book as highly as Animal Farm or 1984. I’ve gotten like 5 people to read his books so far, maybe with this I’ll get like 2 more people to experience the reader’s nirvana that is his literature.

Strangely, at the beginning of the novel Animal Farm, the book is called a fairy story. Usually a fairy story reminds people of children’s literature, but Animal Farm is set for adults. But like a fairy story, Animal Farm has no moral. The book was written by Orwell to criticize Stalin, when Stalin ruled over the Soviet Union. The ending is unsatisfying, so the resolution does not seem like a resolution. The story itself is about animals overthrowing humans and gaining freedom, but conflicts lead one after another after the rebellion. After the rebellion, there are disputes between animals. However, when the disagreements do stop, there are conflicts between the neighboring farms. Rules that were first made at the beginning of the book become broken, but the animals never lose hope. Overall, the book gives a fresh message with its satirical fairy story.

Monday: Mexican Revolution unit test.

Tuesday: We are starting a new unit today that will take us through the end of the semester, Origins and development of authoritarian and single-party states.  Assign Animal Farm (due November 11th).  We will discuss the book based on the handout given with the book.  Assign article on “Why Did Stalin Succeed Lenin?” (due Thursday, Nov. 5th).  Assign Dictator Rules written assignment (due December 7th).  Notes on three key terms for discussing single party states.

Thursday: I will check reading questions and then we will discuss “Why Did Stalin Succeed Lenin?” article.  Also begin notes on Stain’s establishment of power.

Our giant Flemmish rabbit, Cream Puff, had babies on October 30th! This is her second crop of bunnies this year and she still manages to keep her figure. Right now the buns look like squirmy beans but next week they will start getting fur. It has been such a great time for babies at Lawton. So far we’ve had one goat, one lamb, 10 bunnies, a kitten, and a llama. Who’s going to pop next? You’ll have to stick around and find out.

writing anything is a strange process.

for me, songwriting starts with a glimmer—something that emanates from a conversation, someone i pass on the street, an idea or an experience. that glimmer becomes a theme. once i have the theme, all i need is some cogent adjectives to fill out the verses with detail.

recently, i’ve been having a brand new experience: i’ve been getting inspired by books.

my reading material over the last two weeks:
-brave new world
-1984
-animal farm
-the glass castle
-outliers

it’s a lot of negative utopias, a memoir and a statistical analysis. strange that emotive songs could have their beginnings there. as a result, many of the lyrics—most of which are penned on the inside of their back covers—center around greed, the limits of the human condition, alcohol… and pigs. yes, pigs. (having the swine flu may have helped inspire that one. don’t worry: the pig is not named snowball.)

meanwhile, travis wrote a killer song yesterday. it’s still in early stages, but it could be my favorite song on the upcoming album. we’ve been discussing combining pop song structure with a jazzy arrangement for “pink friday.” imagine the style of the beatles songs “all my lovin’,” “please please me” and “baby you can drive my car” with the production of damien rice meets the rescues. EXCITED.

in other news, i am getting really tired of not owning a piano. was going to buy myself one for christmas, but now considering getting one in the next few weeks. i will keep you guys posted!

THE BOOK (in brief)

Old Major sets off a revolution in Manor Farm after an impassioned speech against humanity and what he perceives to be unjust oppression in the hands of their tyrannical “overlord”, Mr. Jones.

The boar dies of old age three days later, sparking a revolt that eventually chases Jones and his family away. Napoleon and Snowball claim leadership in Major’s place. Animal Farm (its new name) prospers for a time under this new system and the Seven Commandments.

Their differing ideals, however, later pit both sides against each other. Napoleon condemns, ousts, and exiles Snowball, labelling him a traitor to the Animalist cause. Snowball is from then on the book’s scapegoat of choice – repeatedly blamed for everything from an upturned apple basket to the (not the final) destruction of their hard-earned windmill.

Napoleon grows steadily more despotic, ordering the immediate execution of Snowball’s alleged supporters and negotiating with humans. Hunger, overwork, and disillusionment stalk the farm. Squealer, Napoleon’s masterful pet spin-doctor, attempts to pacify the other animals into submission through propaganda, gradually altering the sacred Commandments to suit the now-supreme ruling class’ (pigs) every whim.

The book does not end on a happy note. Napoleon ends up ruling Animal Farm (now re-renamed Manor Farm) with impunity, in a state worse than its first.

REVIEW

Should be on the reading lists of dedicated mavericks, students, cynics, freedom-lovers, reality-huggers, and those who dare tread the long walk toward true liberty.

Animal Farm is at once as free of emotion as it is striking; both a “fairy-story” – a mere fable – from the outset and a powerful political satire that attacks all naïve notions of communism, statehood, and “equality” (its handy cliché) with fiery zeal.

George Orwell shapes Animal Farm with classic Orwellian depth from whose author the term truly deserves its name – and simple prose a child could understand. His message is clear-cut and hurts as the truth so often does:

There is no Utopia; no perfect world. Only more suffering.

Set around a bunch of farm animals and their impossible dreams, the author wrapped Animal Farm around an age of Soviet supremacy dominated by witnesses who chose the lesser of two evils (Stalin versus Hitler). While Orwell himself was a dedicated socialist, he was well aware of a new, potentially toxic, form of socialism brewing in Russia.

The animals sadly realized this too late, that even the best intentions go awry and that power, allowed to run unchecked, corrupts all but the most resolute. The farm becomes a stark reminder of the threat of ignorance on a populace far too willing to swallow the lies of Squealers and Napoleons.

A nation that, at the end of the day, looks from “pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.”

ANALYSIS/CHARACTER DISCUSSION

Politics boils down to two words: power corrupts. The responsibility to reclaim a government of the people, by the people, and for the people thus lands on the shoulders of ordinary humanity – us, the masses, trodden underfoot.

Orwell’s use of irony and allegory pervades Animal Farm. He urges us to question the “pigs” we see parading our courts, congress, senate, and halls of government in an air of oblivious political machismo.  Like Biblical sheep led astray (or to slaughter), the animals’ initial search for a better life beneath the banner of “freedom and equality” is destined for failure from the start.  He doles out bits of silent history with even more subtle commentary in fable-like control.

Curiosa é a distorção que o turco de Niterói, comandante em chefe da Animal Farm Bostaqui Socialista, promove da postura do Sandro.

Quando ele afirma, em resposta ao Ned, que o Sandro é um “troll de merda” porque escreveu tudo aquilo CONTRA A COMUNIDADE, ele comete uma dupla distorção:

Primeiro, NÃO é verdade que o Sandro tenha se posicionado contra a COMUNIDADE. O Sandro se posicionou contra a proteção que ALGUNS recebem, principalmente o Gilson Moura e os asseclas habituais do PSOl, que, a despeito do turco de Niterói achar que ele ou eles gostam da comunidade, não medem esforços para tratar mal quem discorda deles.

Ora, uma comunidade é feita de participantes. De que adianta supostamente gostar da “comunidade” se o Gilson trata mal MUITA gente da própria comunidade?

Somos obrigados a concluir que a “comunidade” a que o turco se refere é aquela que é formada apenas por um grupo restrito de pessoas e que são coniventes com o comportamento grosseiro e autoritário do Gilson Moura, precisamente o grupo diminuto, influente junto à moderação (quando não se confunde com a própria), para o qual o Sandro se dirigia em suas críticas.

Segundo, que não se pode dizer que o Sandro não gosta da comunidade por não gostar do comportamento do Gilson e de seus asseclas, e também por não gostar das vistas grossas que a moderação faz em relação aos desmandos éticos que eles praticam, verdadeiras trollagens virtuais e que estropiam os tópicos.

Uma coisa é uma crítica pontual com intenções de ver aquilo varrido do mapa, com alguma dose de ironia e acidez, é verdade, mas que em nenhum momento deixa de ser pertinente ou deixa de ter uma boa intenção intrínseca. Outra coisa, muito diferente, é o que o Adib quis acusar no Sandro, isto é, dele pensar mal a respeito de todo mundo que forma a comunidade ou de verdadeiramente não gostar dela.

Se o Sandro criticou a proteção recebida pelo Gilson Moura, não foi porque não gosta da comunidade ou despreze muitos participantes de lá, inclusive alguns daqueles que são amigos do Gilson. Foi mais uma lamentação de que aquilo estivesse ocorrendo sem que nenhuma advertência sequer tivesse surgido.

Então, o que o Adib Murad faz, até mesmo para não assumir a sua própria parcela de responsabilidade na existência de situações como aquela, em sua aparente coerente manifestação, é tentar subverter o verdadeiro sentimento do Sandro quando escreveu alguns trechos que cricavam aspectos da comunidade. Muito provavelmente ele, Sandro, fez aquilo porque gosta da VERDADEIRA comunidade, formada pelo CONJUNTO dos participantes, e ainda tinha esperanças de que tudo aquilo pudesse ser revertido.

Me desclassifiquem junto com o Gilson
Aline, aconteceu o seguinte:

Houve uma vez um amigo chamado Sandro. Ele saiu do Orkut, comeu depois da meia-noite e se transformou num bicho muito estranho.

Sandro morreu.

No lugar dele surgiu Ale-Sandro, o furingo. Ale-Sandro, o furingo, volta pro Orkut e volta pro Botequim pré-disposto a dar uma lição ao “rei da floresta”, à “turminha do PSOL” e à moderação, um júri que ele acha muito simpático, mas incompetente.

Com seu sarongue, rebolando de mãozinha nas cadeiras, entrou pela porta e saiu pela janela. A mim não fará falta. Mais um pilantra que passa voado por aqui, nem o primeiro e infelizmente nem o último.

Ale-Sandro, o furingo, é só mais um, igualzinho a todos os outros. Daqui a três dias nem vou lembrar mais quem é.

Quanto ao Gilson, é um amigo que vinha se colocando numa posição ruim. Coisas que vi o Gilson fazer:

- Sistematicamente, ser aquele que dá o primeiro peteleco que vira uma guerra e arruina um tópico;
- Se irritar por muito pouco e virar o xingador oficial do lugar;

Coisas que jamais vi o Gilson fazer:

- Desdenhar do nosso grupo, que não é melhor nem pior que outros e tem o direito de ser o que quiser;
- Entrar numa comunidade que despreza pra demonstrar a “indigência espiritual” de quem quer que seja;
- Agir de forma a merecer o meu mais completo, absoluto e irremediável desprezo. Passar a ter o mesmo valor que cocô de cachorro pra mim.

Se alguém se lembra, o Henrique Júdice também já reclamava do Gilson faz um tempo. A diferença é que o Henrique é homem. Digo, se comportou como homem na ocasião: fez a reclamação que cabia e foi ouvido. Outro que jamais vi se comportar como um verme no Orkut, sob qualquer justificativa.

Enfim, tá aí a minha versão.

Não Ned, teu amigo é um troll de merda pq se ele acha tudo o que acha, nem deveria ter entrado. Entrou pra causar, causou, agora pode ir embora.

Eu acho que o Gilson tava causando problema. Mas quis fazer a diferença entre o problema de um e de outro. O primeiro eu sei que gosta daqui, o outro demonstrou e disse com todas as letras o que acha daqui. Sem a intenção nem o tom de construir nada. Não tava se dirigindo a amigos. No meu sentimento pessoal isso faz toda a diferença. Um tem remédio, o outro não.

Quem estiver se sentindo muito ácido, pode ir tomar um leite de magnésia. O dia em que essa comunidade virar lugar disso, avisem pra eu sair antes.

Só uma última coisa: eu não sou a moderação.
