Birds and Metal Poisoning When you own a pet bird, you know that there are always going to be things

Birds and Metal Poisoning
When you own a pet bird, you know that there are always going to be things that you should look out for, and things that you have to be careful of so that your bird doesn’t get sick or injured. You always want to be on the lookout for things that will help your bird be happy and healthy, and you never want to be in a situation where you have done anything careless that is going to let your pet bird become sick. Birds and metal poisoning is something that you want to keep in mind when you own pet birds.
Many times, people keep their pet birds in cages that are designed just for them. This is the best way to do this, as the manufacturers of the birdcages are going to be sure to use proper things in the birdcage – things that aren’t going to make your bird sick. You should always keep your pet birds in a cage that is designed for them. First of all, they are going to be less likely to get out, and second of all, you know that the cage has been built and designed to hold pet birds, and therefore is not going to be harmful in any way.
If you keep your pet bird somewhere other than a bird cage, or if you let your pet bird roam in your house without supervising them, you always run the risk of having your bird be poisoned by something. Like any other animal, a bird will explore his surroundings, and might be tempted to nibble on the bars of a cage, or on something in your home. If there are metals that are unhealthy for birds, you might find yourself with a very sick bird.
The best way to avoid metal poisoning in your pet bird is to make sure that you are keeping your bird either in a cage that is designed for him, or that you have gone to the trouble to research your cage’s materials to be sure that they aren’t going to harm your bird. Also, you have to be sure to supervise your pet bird very much when he is out of the cage to be sure that he doesn’t get into anything he shouldn’t. A good way to do this is to bird proof the room that he will be in, and to make sure that nothing in that room is going to harm him. Then, while he is out, be sure to keep a good eye on him so he doesn’t get into trouble.
Published with

These are simple and fun to make.

You will need:

A small cardboard box – I used an old cream cheese box

White paper

Black card

Cotton wool

Glue

Sticky tape

Small round stickers

A pencil

Method:

Take the box and wrap it in the white paper.

Draw on the black card a head and four feet and cut them out.

Stick the feet on the sides of the box and then cover the box in cotton wool. This is easier than trying to stick the feet onto the cotton wool. I found that it was much better to pull the wool apart a little before I stuck it on otherwise your sheep look a little lumpy!

Take the head stick on two round white stickers for eyes and draw on the pupils. Stick a small piece of wool for hair and then stick the whole thing on the box (this has to be stuck to the cotton wool).

Tips/notes/other ideas

I took the boxes wrapped already to the session as this saved time. I also had pre-drawn the heads and eyes which the children/adults cut out in the session. I had to have two sizes since some of the boxes I had collected were larger than others. Once the glue has dried on the legs it is possible, if the card is thick enough, to stand on its own.

Kool Samoyeds specializes in GIANT and WOOLY Malamutes and Siberians and standard-size Samoyeds with great temperaments from a reputable breeder. All of our Samoyeds came from a show breeder. Our puppies are $300-$1500. You can find more pictures on our website. Please see link below or go to www.alaskanmalamutepups.com. We will have some Giant AKC purebred Alaskan Malamute puppies ready to go in December 2009. We have some of the tallest, largest, and healthiest Alaskan Malamutes and Siberian Huskies in the US. We also have a 3 year genetic guarantee which also includes mild hip dysplasia, whereas most other Malamute breeders have only a 1 year genetic guarantee and that only covering crippling hip dysplasia. Genetic problems can show up to the age of 3 years and mild hip dysplasia will turn into crippling hip dysplasia at some point, therefore making a one year genetic guarantee, especially for crippling hip dysplasia only, worthless. Our puppies are well socialized by four children/teens. References are available upon request. Please call for details. We are OFA certified and utilized and AKC affiliated. We are also members of the Better Business Bureau of Western Michigan. Fastest response come by email. THANK YOU.

In mid-October 1804, Meriwether Lewis wrote this singularly appalling entry in his journal: This day

In mid-October 1804, Meriwether Lewis wrote this singularly appalling entry in his journal:

This day took a small bird alive of the order of the [blank] or goat suckers. it appeared to be passing into the dormant state. on the morning of the 18th the murcury was at 30 above 0. the bird could scarcely move.— I run my penknife into it’s body under the wing and completely distroyed it’s lungs and heart— yet it lived upwards of two hours this fanominon I could not account for unless it proceeded from the want of circulation of the blood.

If you’re an animal lover like me, you have a hard time with this passage. It’s hard to think of anyone deliberately killing a live animal. But Lewis may be forgiven for his curiosity, for he had just encountered one of the rarest behaviors in the avian world. The bird he found huddled on the ground near the mouth of the Cannonball River in North Dakota was the common poorwill, the only hibernating bird in the world.

Common Poorwill taking a long winter's nap

Birds that live in seasonally cold climates have to be able to adapt to a variety of weather conditions. To cope with a sudden drop in temperature, many birds are able to put themselves in a state of torpor for several hours. Hummingbirds, for example, can lower their body temperatures, slow their metabolism, and go more or less dormant to save energy during chilly winter nights. But the bird Lewis called a “goatsucker”—at that time unknown to science—is the only bird that can hibernate for long periods of time, going without food and lowering its body temperature almost to that of its surroundings for days or even weeks on end.

Despite his extensive scientific training, Lewis evidently mistook the goatsucker for an eastern whippoorwill, another member of the nightjar family, which it closely resembles. He didn’t realize that he had found an entirely new species. Too bad he was too far north to meet any Hopi Indians, who could have told them their name for the bird was Hölchoko, “’the sleeping one.”

The unique abilities and distinct identity of the common poorwill were finally recognized a few years later by Thomas Nuttall, a botanist who accompanied several fur trading expeditions up the Missouri a few years after Lewis and Clark. The great naturalist’s description of this bird earned him the honor of recognition in its scientific name, Phalaenoptilus nuttallii.

"Nuttall's Whip-poor-will" by John James Audubon

UK Ministers were delighted at the recent news that the UK has achieved 10% growth in one year.

UK Ministers were delighted at the recent news that the UK has achieved 10% growth in one year.

“We have always talked about the importance of growth for our country. Growth is the ultimate good and must override all other concerns” said government spokesman Donald Harebrain. Opposition spokesman Theobald Quixotic responded by saying “it was our idea first and we thought of it 20 years ago and what is more, it is a new idea that we just invented last week”.

They were of course referring to the fact that in just one year the UK managed growth of more than 10% in the number of endangered species within its borders.

Harebrain continued…“We have completely outstripped our rivals and have shown the world again what British ingenuity means. Look at the statistics. Bermuda achieved no growth whatsoever whereas Brunei and Eritrea actually show negative growth.”

Harebrain also expressed his glee that this had all been achieved without letting in any foreign asylum seeking endangered species.

Louis – otherwise known as Lord Louis in our household – is our four-year-old Cocker Spaniel. Admittedly he is one of the most pampered pets around, but if you met him you would understand why. He’s absolutely gorgeous and has the most amazing personality I’ve ever seen in a dog, but I could be biased.

Louis was diagnosed with Hip Dysplasia in his first year. We noticed him limping around occasionally, crying a lot at night and suffering from general mood swings, (Yes, we are still talking about a dog.) He lost interest in chasing his ball and struggled to run in the garden.

After being X-rayed it was discovered that Louis had a severe form of Hip Dysplasia. As both femur balls were not fitting into the sockets properly Louis was in a lot of pain in his back legs / hips.

After scouring the internet for advice, mum found an article about Reiki on animals, and shortly after Louis began having treatments with a local practitioner who works with dogs.

The change in him was almost instantaneous. He seemed happier and livelier in himself, he wasn’t crying so much and he finally started playing with his toys again.

He was of course still in pain, but it was clear that the regular Reiki sessions were helping him somehow.

We have been reminiscing about a previous Thanksgiving trip; we traveled to Farm Sanctuary in northern California that rescues animals like cows, goats, turkeys, pigs, rabbits, and others that are often found on farms. Farm Sanctuary is safe place though where animals live long lives and die of old age, not by man’s hand. On that trip we sat down with a flock of turkeys and fed a Thanksgiving dinner to them. To see these turkeys approach us unafraid seemed remarkable in itself. To sit on the earth with them, reach out, and hand feed them cooked squash and cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie and watch them enjoy it filled our hearts. Feeding dinner to the turkeys was an incredibly soul-cleansing experience in compassion. Moments like this are what I am especially thankful for this time of year.

ABC AUSTRALIA Concerns have been raised about a dramatic decrease in endangered bird numbers in Tasm

ABC AUSTRALIA

Concerns have been raised about a dramatic decrease in endangered bird numbers in Tasmania.

Experts say drought, wildfires and the spread of urban development have contributed to the decline in numbers of the 40-spotted pardelote and the swift parrot.

Conservationist, Sally Bryant, says pardelote, or 40-spot, numbers in the state have dropped significantly over the last decade.

“In areas like Dennes Hill on Bruny Island, where I can remember going down and being flooded by the sound of 40-spots, it’s now very quiet, even though the bird is far more easily identifiable there than in some of the small colonies.

“My first reaction and certainly what the statistics are showing is that the numbers are very low,” Ms Bryant said.

Conservationists want the Tasmanian Government to save the habitats of endangered bird species on Bruny Island.

Peter McGlone from the Conservation Trust says logging of the parrot’s habitat should be stopped now, instead of waiting for the completion of industry codes of practice, which are being drafted.

“We know that an area on Bruny Island has been logged just in recent months that has swift parrot habitat in it,” he said.

“There are other areas in the south of the state that may well be being logged right now, and [the Primary Industries Minister] David Llewellyn needs to be proactive and make sure those logging operaitons stop.”

Forestry Tasmania has rejected claims it is rushing to log endangered species habitats before the new guidelines come into force.

The Forest Practices Authority has been working with major logging companies, including Forestry Tasmania, to draft guidelines to protect important wildlife habitats.

Forestry Tasmania’s Hans Drielsma denies his company is rushing to cut down trees before the draft is approved.

“There’s absolutely no basis to any suggestions like that,” said Dr Drielsma.

He says harvesting has been stopped in areas where birds are breeding.

By the time this posts, I may be a new mommy.

But as The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy says: DON’T PANIC!

No, I’m not pregnant.

When I moved from New York to Georgia, my chihuahua, Oliver, stayed behind with my mother. He was supposed to come live with me once I got settled, but in the end, he was happy with Mom and she was happy with him and so he stayed. And I’ve missed having a dog ever since.

For several reasons, I haven’t gotten one:

I go out of town a lot and boarding is expensive.

I’m only supposed to have two pets, per my lease, and I ended up accidentally adopting a couple stray kittens along the way, then brought one of my mother’s cats home with me this summer after a visit to Buffalo, which made three.

I didn’t want the added responsibility.

Oliver Q. Chihuahua, Esq. (AKA Antonio Chocolat Chocolat, Chihuahua, Little Dog)

Well, last Thursday, The Universe took the decision out of my hands. Maybe. I don’t know for sure yet, but I have a sneaking suspicion.

The mailboxes are at the bottom of the hill that is the parking lot in my townhouse complex. Nearby are two Dumpsters. When I get home from work every afternoon, I drive down to the mailboxes, get the mail and then back up to my house. Last Thursday, a small dog with a collar ran in front of my car and I almost hit her. She ran across the lot and behind the townhouses. I got out of my car to look for her, but didn’t see her anywhere.

After I got the mail, I went home and stepped out back to see if I could see her. I heard barking coming from my right and walked around to find her on the porch of a neighbor’s house who wasn’t home. She was growling and barking and baring her teeth, tail between her legs: a tiny miniature pinscher.

There was no way I could get near her without injury, so I decided to get some twine and make a slip knot to go around her neck so I could take her inside where it was safe. The neighbor’s next-door neighbor was coming home at that moment, so I asked if she was the dog of the people whose porch she was on. The neighbor said no, they don’t have a dog.

Not good.

I got the twine and successfully lassoed the little dog. Almost immediately, she stopped barking and growling and asked me to pick her up. Immediately, I noticed a great deal of ticks on her tiny body, some of which had been there quite a while.

A cropped min-pin

Into the house, get the ticks off (I had to leave a couple until someone came home to help me hold her still), call the animal shelter and a couple other places the shelter suggested and nothing. No reports of a missing dog of her description. Now, she is a min-pin, but her ears and tail are not cropped and she’s been fixed. She was thin, but not so starving that her bones stuck out, so she’d eaten recently. She has a collar, but no tags and no tattoo indicating a microchip. Someone cared for and loved this dog. No one has reported her missing in any of the obvious places. Chris said he’d seen her running around the area for a few days.

Friday, I checked the newspaper and www.craigslist.com and placed my own ads. There were no ads for a missing dog of her description in those places, either.

She’s a very sweet dog, although the cats may disagree. They don’t seem to enjoy being chased. Harry is double the dog’s size (literally — I weighed them). I think the dog got a noseful of cat claw Friday morning, though, so the chasing may cease sooner than later. Possibly by the time this posts.

We’re calling her Lily.

Right now, it’s a waiting game. Someone may call. But my gut tells me no one will. And that brings me to my point: We don’t choose our pets; they choose us.

I’ve been thinking about wanting a dog more and more lately, and suddenly, this tiny creature scared and in need literally crosses my path. She’s small enough to travel easily almost anywhere I might go. She was in my house for only seconds and already behaving as if she’d lived there her entire life.

I would never have gone out and adopted a dog in the near future. So one adopted me (maybe!).

TUESDAY UPDATE: Still no calls or e-mails and she has no microchip.

Image : http://www.flickr.com

With all the toy stores to choose from, you can give your child, you will find that almost all are very common. Apart from tapping the child has been to make a pet. You know, animal dander may be harmful to the health of your child. Well, guess what, 'I would find a new option, the perfect gift for your child. It's called pets Zhu Zhu. (Pronounced Zoo Animals)

One might ask what are pets Zhu Zhu. I asked the same questionlike this before. Zhu Zhu animals are hamsters stuffed animals in real life. The good thing about these toys is that they are very interactive stuffed animals to your child that would really start to play immediately.

I still remember the time when my son got his first airline Zhu Zhu. My son started playing with him, once he had. He tried to caress and embrace the company Zhu Zhu and was so happy when the toy reacts to them. It seems that the toywas established to promote this way.

He was more excited when we put it on its way to explore. He started running from all sides. Then I said that we should at home, and play your own products. He has not heard the request for a new accessory for her so I finally relented and it will carry a pen, where he began to run like hamsters, do something regularly.

The good thing about these animals that actually live animals such as hamsters, without the hassle of maintenance. Maintenancein the sense that they are clean in their cages or feed them. With that, it will do is use it as what my son play forever. I only have a problem with me – which means that my son has always called for a series of new batteries, because he can not stop playing with these soft toys.

The main reason why these toys are very interactive is that they are made with artificial intelligence. So they are able to react to their environment and also respond tohow to play with them.

These animals have different personalities for you to choose from. In addition to playing with them, also have the option, you disguise that the right opportunity. For example, they may be able to configure it for Halloween or Christmas. At the same time your child can also bring pets Zhu Zhu trick-or-treat, with their costumes. Your child will surely capture the attention of his classmates with these toys in cute costumes.

IZhu Zhu stressed that pets are available online in various stores and malls. I saved money by buying these toys, instead of a hamster alive. That saves me the trouble of buying food for them or take to review their monthly veterinarian. My baby loves it, I do!.
