With the release of New Moon follows more for those vampire obsessed! This time, in the form of the Southern Vampire Mystery books that inspired the popular series True Blood. Author Charlaine Harrie will be releasing two books in France in their translated version and for us, we have just to wait until May 2010 for Book 10. We know, if True Blood keeps up its already fabulous ratings, it could go on…for a very long time.

After delayed releases and plenty of rumors, Trick ‘R Treat finally reached a DVD near you. This little engine that could was slated for a Halloween 2007 release which is when it started to gain interest and curiosity. Suddenly, the trailers disappeared and it started popping up with a 2008 date by this point I was thoroughly intrigued and more than a little frustrated. When it didn’t make 2008 I thought all was lost.

Here it is, the straight to DVD bastard child that climbed right out of the Walmart dumpster and demanded to survive. Let’s get this straight from the start, I really enjoyed this film but was very confused by the whole experience. I found the whole thing suffered from a severe identity crisis.

The movie plays out like a classic anthology, a collection of shorter self contained stories loosely connected by a memorably creepy button eyed boy? Let’s say boy. There are four stories including a young couple who pay the price for not following the traditions, a high school principle with dark urges, a seemingly innocent girl with some surprising appetites and a nasty hermit who gets a lesson in terror.

That paragraph reads like a vague back of the box synopsis and I don’t care, there are some really surprising elements to each story and I’m not giving them away. The chronology is messed with a bit so it jumps from story to story at certain points which is a nice adjustment of the linear anthology setup.

I found the tone of this film was inconsistent, it wasn’t quite sure what kind of movie it wanted to be. It jumped from dark comedy to serious horror film to children s ghost story which made the entire experience a little confusing. For the record, as with any reveal in a horror movie, seeing under the button eye mask…well, what did you think?

Overall the film is fantastic. It’s a fun throwback to 80’s anthologies like Tales from the Darkside, Creepshow and even Cat’s Eye (Wow, Stephen King had his fingers in all of those). Anna Paquin was adorable and didn’t grate on me as she does in most films and Brain Cox makes almost any movie watchable (he’s the only reason to watch Red).

I have a bad habit of calling pretty much everything a must watch or a must rent…and this is no different. Objectivity can get stuffed.

Anna Paquin films wedding scenes for ‘The Romantics’.

E’ partita da poco la seconda stagione di True Blood su Fox (canale 110 di Sky).  Per chi ha visto la serie in lingua originale non ha potuto fare a meno di notare le differenze abissali nell’adattamento dialoghi del doppiaggio italiano (edizione curata da Fox Channels Italy).

Innanzitutto il doppiatore di Sam è cambiato da una stagione all’altra (nessun sito è ancora aggiornato su questo punto ma si può tranquillamente vedere nei titoli di coda della serie). Nella prima stagione, il doppiatore era Loris Loddi (molto adatto alla voce di Sam).

Nella seconda stagione la voce di Sam è di Christian Iansante, cambiata per problemi di salute del doppiatore Loris Loddi (fonte trueblood.myblog.it).
Senza offesa invece per Deborah Ciccorelli che doppia l’amata/odiata Maryann (Michelle Forbes): mio assoluto parere personale ma la voce non è adatta.
E’ difficile vedere la versione italiana dopo aver ammirato quella originale. Io preferisco di gran lunga le loro voci (per quanto non ami nella versione originale nemmeno la vera voce della Paquin ma… ahimè… quella voce ha, e quella ci terremo: e un plauso va fatto comunque alla De Bortoli che doppia davvero bene la Paquin in italiano).                                Voi cosa ne pensate di questo doppiaggio?
Rispondo inoltre in questo articolo alle molte richieste per quanto riguarda i dvd di True Blood in Italia: per ora non sono previsti in quanto il telefilm non è ancora andato in onda “in chiaro” (ossia su reti generaliste quali Mediaset, La 7 – Rai escludo possa mandare in onda la serie anche a tarda ora). Inoltre chi non vuole aspettare la messa in chiaro, può comunque acquistare i dvd in versione originale dal sito di amazon.com (i sottotitoli ovviamente sono in tutte le lingue tranne che in italiano!!!).

VERDICT:
8/10 Ultimate Senior Projects

Not as amazing as I initially remember it being, but still a great movie.

Almost Famous is about William Miller, an unpopular, endearing, and sheltered High Schooler who really digs music. After finding out that he’s two years younger than he always thought he was, he pitches a story to Rolling Stone about doing a piece on the up-and-coming band Stillwater, Rolling Stone is all about it, so this once-lame kid packs up his shit and hits the road with what eventually becomes one of the biggest bands in the country. Needless to say, it ends up being one groovy effing trip.

The story here is loosely based on writer/director Cameron Crowe’s own life and times on his journey from High School nerd to R.S. editor to Oscar-winning screenwriter, and with that, I once again tip my hat to Mr. Crowe. The only other person I can think of that might top him for having one of the coolest lives of all-time, or at least the coolest teen years of all-time, is Frank Abagnale, Jr. from Catch Me If You Can (great movie), only, you know, without all the jail time and whatnot.

But before I go any further, we gotta talk about the soundtrack. I didn’t really appreciate it as much the first time I heard the music in this movie, nor did I fully appreciate the actual soundtrack I got for my birthday that same year, but now that I’ve had a good long time to discover Led Zeppelin, The Allman Brothers (both of whom are the bands Stillwater is based on – fun fact!), and every other seminal classic rock band that are as much a part of this movie as its story and characters, I finally see what I’ve been missing. Screw Rock Band and Guitar Hero, Almost Famous is a true education in some of the greatest music ever put to vinyl along with what it means to actually love music.

Come on, like you didn’t sing along to the “Tiny Dancer” scene.

I think the reason I connected so much with this movie when I first saw it back in High School was because I could connect with William Miller and good lord did I want to be him. Nine years later, William Miller’s life remains unreal, but I’ve unfortunately come to the realization that Patrick Fugit isn’t a very good actor. Doesn’t show a whole lot of emotion, doesn’t do a very good job of convincing anyone that he’s serious when he’s trying to be, and is actually at his best when he lets everyone else do the talking. Probably explains why he hasn’t really landed any significant roles since, but still, what an awesome life.

Not the biggest fan of Jason Lee either, but everyone else is awesome. Billy Crudup is great as Stillwater’s lead guitarist, and even though I’m not all that keen on his real-life antics, he’s one cool mofo here and he sure does look the part, too. Also really like that Crowe made the lead guitarist the main focus of the band, ’cause isn’t the lead guitarist always the coolest one?

“Unfortunately, yes,” replies Aiden the drummer.

There’s also some great cameos by Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rainn Wilson, Jimmy Fallon, Fairuza Balk (where the hell did she go?), and Anna Paquin (not exactly great, but hey, she’s an Oscar-winner, dammit!). And big shout-out to Frances McDormand’s hilarious turn as William’s outrageously overprotective mother. She should have won the Oscar for this one.

And lastly, there’s Kate Hudson as Penny Lane, the leader of Stillwater’s groupies – “The Band-Aids”. Among the many things people might remember this movie for, it continues to stand as the both the launching pad and single high point in Ms. Hudson’s unfortunate acting career. I don’t know if it’s a good idea to follow Cuba Gooding, Jr’s lead and keep to a strict diet of shitty role after shitty role after getting nominated for an Oscar, but maybe that’s just me. Still, Penny Lane is arguably the most interesting character in this whole movie and if Kate Hudson were to quit acting today, she’d go down in history for her performance here.

But I don’t know if it’s because I’ve seen this movie too many times or if it’s just because I knew what was coming, but the script isn’t as fantastic as it once was. The humor seems somewhat canned, so does the dialogue at times, and even though it’s better than any other script that was written in 2000, it didn’t have me grinning like an idiot like it used to. Not saying that Crowe didn’t deserve it, but some of the magic has been lost. But if you haven’t seen this movie before, completely disregard this paragraph, the magic was definitely there the first time around.

I’m just now realizing that I’ve used the word “great” a lot in this review, but the thing is that this movie reeks of it. I remember walking out of the theater the first time I saw this and announcing to the world that it was “MY FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL-TIME!” I took that statement back a few hours later, but still, it was a big deal for me. Nonetheless, Almost Famous may very well be the best movie about music that I know of and even though it may have garnered a 9 out of 10 at another time in my life, it’ll always hold a place in my heart.

Now go out there and get that damn soundtrack.

With only four slots left on the list of the 15 original Marvel Superstars Leader characters to fill, we have our own wishes to reveal. As always with Legendary Cardboard, some of them are seductive underdogs that we would be crazy to actually hope for.

When calculating the odds on the inclusion of our desired final four, we made the assumption that each of the five teams would be give three different leaders in the Marvel Premier expansion set. With three Villains, two Avengers, two X-Men, two Fantastic Four, and two Marvel Knights already announced, it seems that there may be one more character chosen from each of the hero teams. These are our druthers, with some opinions about the chance of seeing them as mainstays in the intitial boxes. We are fairly sure that each of these myths will be represented by at least one supporter card, might they actually be Leaders?

Pepper Potts 20-1

Gwyneth Paltrow’s glimmering gal pal is going to get some serious action in the Iron Man 2 movie, but she probably didn’t have enough oomph in the first film. If they actually balance the teams with three leaders each they will need to find an Avenger other than Hulk and Iron Man, so she does have a hint of hope, but probably not gonna happen.

Rogue 20-1

Even though Anna Paquin is absorbing enormous amounts of popularity as a vampire right now, her role in the X-Men films may not be enough to make her a Leader character. Rogue has always been our favorite mutant, so we are taking the gloves off and crossing our fingers.

Invisible Woman 3-1

Jessica Alba seems like a sure thing, but her Leader character has not been announced yet. If the first set contains three per team, her inclusion would leave out Mr. Fantastic. Perhaps the Villains team will get more leaders than the heroes, or maybe the initial offering will have a “Fantastic Three”. We shall see.

Ghost Rider 2-1

The flaming skull may be a shoe-in if there are three leaders per team. With Elektra already representing the ninja side of Marvel Knights, Daredevil could be left looking for a future set to become a Leader character. The suspense is burning a hole in our heads, but it sure is fun to speculate while we wait.

I’m not at all sure how I feel about True Blood. Alan Ball = Brilliant. But I don’t really enjoy the ride. Confounded, mostly. Evan Rachel Wood (above) plays Sophie-Anne Leclerq – the vampire queen. First appearing in the episode Frenzy – and in that swim suit. A Norma Kamali. Specifically, the Jersey collection.

Can you see Anna Paquin in this photo? I can’t. Apparently she’s there somewhere. I’m not the only one having trouble as well. Mama Vamp can’t see her either.

This B is really more of an average, splitting the difference between an A for tone, structure, and gore, and a big fat EFFFFF for camera work. I’m looking for a way to express how catastrophic the camera work is for Trick ‘r Treat, and I’m landing somewhere between soft-core porn and Lifetime original movie.

Oh yes. That bad.

It essentially felt like the film had been formatted to fit [your] screen, with lots of pan and scan and poor framing, but I was watching a blu-ray DVD on a very nice, wide, flatscreen television, so I don’t understand how that could be possible. There’s not much more I can say about how abysmal the camera movement was, and obviously no pictures will do it justice because the actual shots were all lovely, the camera just moved over them in the crappiest way possible, so you’ll have to take my word for it. Essentially: cheap, cheap and glossy. Like rayon or cubic zirconia!

However, there were other things! Awesome things! The opening was sweet, despite Tahmoh Penikett’s penchant for Wolverine-style scream-acting:

and the comic book credits were pretty cool, too. See for yourselves!

As you can see at the link, this movie starts out with a bang! Porn and blood! Trick ‘r Treat is actually an anthology of four scary Halloween stories (in addition to the opening), and they’re all very cool and twisty.

Story 1:

Dylan Baker, get away from that kid! I’m sorry, I just do not trust him around males under the age of 15 after Happiness. Can you blame me? Unfortunately for poor type-cast Mr. Baker, my mistrust is accurately placed here. Dude is creepy.

Hilariously so! Baker plays Mr. Wilkins, the local principal, although he’s less of a ‘pal and more of a, you know, serial killer. With crotchety old Brian Cox as a neighbor!

Best curmudgeon ever! I could seriously enjoy a spin-off starring Cox and Baker as wacky neighbors. Shit, make it a sitcom.

Story 2:

A handful of bitchy little kids decide to freak out the local adorbs weirdo girl by playing an atrocious prank on her at the site of this school bus massacre that took place thirty years ago. The flashback to the massacre is the only genuinely frightening part of this movie. Don’t get me wrong, I dug the hell out of Trick ‘r Treat; it was funny and gross and hard-core, but it wasn’t scary. Except for THIS!

BLURG! Take off those masks, scary disturbed children! You are wigging my ass out!

Oh and don’t worry, the adorbs weirdo kid totally got back at the bitchy little pranksters. In a highly satisfying manner.

Story 3:

Anna Paquin, what are you doing here? Oh, Bryan Singer must have traded on his X-Men currency to snag you before you started filming True Blood. It sure is nice to see you with brown hair again. You’re so much prettier this way! See?

That bleach job does nothing for your complexion! Where were we? Oh yes, Trick ‘r Treat. A movie in which you are inexplicably featured. Paquin plays the virginal Little Red Riding Hood amidst her slutty fairy tale companions.

Snow White, Cinderella and whatever-the-pink-one-is-supposed-to-be (besides the perennially naked girl in Smallville and Lost Boys: The Tribe) decide it’s time to get Red laid. They split up and Red is stalked by a mysterious vampy-type.

Despite the fact that they are totally cloak-buddies, Red doesn’t want anything to do with MysteryVamp. And then…some incredibly awesome stuff happens that I just can’t bring myself to spoil no matter how badly I want to. This review is spoiler-free! I will only say that there is an ubiquitous horror scene that has never before been executed in such a freshly grotesque manner, and Trick ‘r Treat just NAILS it. GAH I want to tell you! But I won’t, so here are just some more pretty shots of Anna Paquin being pretty.

Story 4:

AKA, Kreeg the Curmudgeonly Neighbor Gets His Own Storyline!

Kreeg hates Halloween, has a mysterious past, and is being tormented by Sam, the creepy little thread who runs throughout Trick ‘r Treat.

Sam cameos in all of the above stories but takes on more of a starring villain role in Kreeg’s house. Trick ‘r Treat writer/director Michael Doughterty  manages these disparate threads with a deft hand, in that there are dozens of subtle allusions and visual hints that weave them all together. The writing is frankly great, and I really dig the tone, because it’s just so absurd and yet still wholeheartedly, intensely fucked up. I have to admit, I cringed when the Marilyn Manson cover of “Sweet Dreams” played over a scene, because dudes, this is not 1995, but that could quite possibly be an intentionally quirky decision on the director’s part.

The writing is certainly not the problem here, nor the tone, nor the set design, which I truly enjoyed:

No the problem lies entirely with the camera work. Michael Doughtery heretofore has worked as a successful screenwriter in a couple Bryan Singer films (X-Men 2 and Superman Returns, hence Singer’s involvement with presenting Trick ‘r Treat) and I don’t know, maybe he should stick to his day job. Although the cinematographer was Glen MacPherson, and he’s shot tons of stuff I’ve seen, including The Final Destination and Resident Evil this year alone, and I don’t remember those films reeking of the Cinemax After Hours treatment, so lord, who knows who’s to blame.

Still and all, Trick ‘r Treat is fun and original with a wicked sense of humor and I’m not displeased to hear that Doughtery is already talking sequel. The original is definitely worth a rental, especially next Halloween season!

Holy lord, I love this season! The CW is presenting the two-parter Justice Society eps as a 2-hour movie event on January 29! This may interrupt my plans to throw a birthday party for my dog on that day. Sorry, Zelda! (thanks for the link, Mandy!)

Am loving True Blood. Loving it! Is better that Spooks Series 8, would you believe! I am genuinely savouring every single episode.

And I’m falling in love with Sookie Stackhouse (played – so perfectly – by Anna Paquin).

To those of you not watching it – you really ought to be. It’s airing on Channel4 in the UK (first series). Set in the Deep South. Vampires and humans living side by side. Of course, as soon as I say this (as I have to colleagues), they laugh and say “nah, not my type of thing at all”. But it’s great. Really good, ultra slick, super stylized drama. Is like Mad Men - another brilliant US HBO import. And you don’t have to like vampire stories to like this at all, that’s just the backdrop. The writing, the acting, the story lines – masterful!

And so I’m falling in love with Sookie. Today she and Bill (the vampire) finally consummated their forbidden love. And so she bared her exquisite, perfectly ripe, chiffon breasts. Like peaches plucked from the garden of Eden. Sublime!

I am going to be fang deep in vampires this weekend.

I’m heading to Dark Shadows at Twilight: A Paley Center Vampire Weekend at the Paley Center’s New York outpost.

If you’re not familiar with the Paley Center For Media, the organization hosts many events dedicated to the cultural, creative and social significance of TV, radio and emerging new media platforms, the most famous of which is their annual William S. Paley Television Festival.  I was lucky enough to go to this year’s Paley Fest with @TrueBloodDallas where I livetweeted the True Blood panel (read my live tweets from the event here).

Vampire Weekend officially kicks off on Friday, November 13 with screenings of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and one of my favorite vampire films, Nosferatu.

Saturday is going to be my big day.  I’ll be livetweeting from the True Blood screening.  Alan Ball, Stephen Moyer, and Anna Paquin are scheduled to be there, so expect loads of tweets and pics. While there won’t be any stars in attendance, I’m sure we all remember how quickly we were glamored by Alan Ball’s series, so yeah, expect loads of tweets and pics from the event.

I can’t wait to sink my teeth into the “TV Vampire Takedown” debate led by Entertainment Weekly’s Ken Tucker.  Expert vampire fans from the likes of Television Without Pity, TVland.com, and Vanity Fair are going to be debating merits of everyone’s favorite TV vampires.  Given that they’re going to be focusing on the results of Paley Center’s TV Vampire Poll (yup, Spike won), I’m expecting to see blood on the stage.

Twilight & True Blood Set To Rule People’s Choice Awards

Vampires are set to rule the upcoming People’s Choice Awards – with blockbuster fantasy film franchise Twilight and blood-sucking U.S. TV series True Blood leading the nominations.

The public cast more than 18 million votes online to select the nominees for next year’s ceremony, and will also choose the winners in 35 categories.

The Twilight Saga will compete against Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Star Trek in the favourite movie and favourite film franchise categories.

Stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner have earned nods for best on-screen team, joining fellow nominees Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince), Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds (The Proposal), Shia Labeouf and Megan Fox (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) and Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Ryan Reynolds, will.i.am, Dominic Monaghan and Daniel Henney (X-Men Origins: Wolverine).

Pattinson and Stewart were also nominated individually for favourite movie actress and actor, and will face-off against A-listers Brad Pitt, Hugh Jackman, Johnny Depp, Ryan Reynolds, Anne Hathaway, Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Aniston and Sandra Bullock in their respective categories.

Lautner is also up for breakout movie actor alongside Chris Pine, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Sam Worthington and Zachary Quinto.

Meanwhile, True Blood was nominated for favourite TV obsession and favourite sci-fi/fantasy TV show, where it will battle for the title against The Vampire Diaries, Heroes, Lost and Supernatural.

The show’s star Anna Paquin will fight it out with Blake Lively, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Katherine Heigl and Mariska Hargitay for favourite TV drama actress – while Hugh Laurie, Kiefer Sutherland, Mark Harmon, Matthew Fox and Patrick Dempsey compete for the title of favourite TV drama actor.

Musically, newcomers Adam Lambert, Demi Lovato, Kris Allen, Lady Gaga and reality TV star Susan Boyle will battle for favourite breakout music artist.

Eminem, Jason Mraz, John Mayer, Keith Urban and Tim McGraw will go head-to-head for the favourite male artist accolade, while their female counterparts include: Beyonce, Britney Spears, Carrie Underwood, Pink and Taylor Swift.

Queen Latifah will host the People’s Choice Awards at Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre on 6 January, 2010.
