The Ultimate High End Bag Lady

Anna Piaggi is an Italian fashion writer and style icon.

Anna Piaggi has written for fashion magazines such as the Italian edition of Vogue and, in the 1980s, the avant-garde magazine Vanity. She is known especially for double page spreads in the Italian Vogue, where her artistic flair has been given free expression in a montage of images and text, with layout by Luca Stoppini. Since 1969, she has used a bright red manual Olivetti typewriter for her work.

Piaggi has a large clothes collection, including 2865 dresses and 265 pairs of shoes, according to a 2006 exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. She dresses in an exuberant, unique and eclectic way, never appearing in the same outfit more than once in public. Such is her influence and knowledge in the fashion world, Manolo Blahnik has dubbed her ‘The world’s last great authority on frocks’.

Her associates in the fashion world include the fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld (from the 1970s), who has often sketched her, and Manolo Blahnik, who is the designer of many of her shoes. She is the muse of British milliner Stephen Jones. She is also an admirer of British clothes designer Vivienne Westwood and her hats, made by Prudence Millinery. She has lived in New York and has visited London and Italy periodically since the 1950s.

Piaggi was married to the photographer Alfa Castaldi in 1962 in New York. Castaldi died in 1995

Anna Piaggi never appears in an outfit more than once. Oh, and colored fur makes me extremely uncomfortable.

So I’m obsessed with the High-End Bag Lady look… And I realized that all the bag lady looks I love are from The Sartorialist! So, I’m willing to bet Scott Schuman appreciates the look too. I miss my bag lady look, I’m goin BACK!

The most important thing about the bag lady look is the details… I feel like her look is rooted in Americana. Her pieces are while quirky in color and what they’re paired with, are classic in shape. My look will still mostly be black. Because I don’t have all the money in the world yet to coordinate all these things together. But anyways. Well unless I stumble upon a great pair of brown boots… The coat is important, the ethnic/collected jewelry paired with like EMERALDS… Eclectic, bag lady and she’s comfy.

lei è Anna Piaggi..se non sapete chi sia basta andare su google e vedere..vabbè, fatto sta che a me questa vecchia fa impazzire! e lo dico perche lei sul serio va in giro per milano vestita cosi! e non nego di essere parecchio invidioso della sua faccia tosta: se potessi permettermela anche io la mattina prenderei le prime merdate che ho nell’armadio, accozzandone a cazzo di cane i colori, per poi vantarmi di essere un gran guru della moda! cazzo come la invidio!

One of my first ever Fashion Weeks was in London, while I was working with Rodnik (in the midst of their fashionable rise and musical world tour).  It was my first position with a design team and was quite an experience, to say the least:  transforming a Smithfield slaughterhouse into a catwalk after 6 months developing a collection, singing with the band at the Topshop stage, and meeting and translating for Anna Piaggi herself.

Times change.  People move.  Brands and individuals all evolve.

Rodnik has since become The Rodnik Band, under the sole direction of Phil Colbert, who just staged a fantastic Guerilla Fashion Show in The National Gallery and Trafalgar Square. Leave it to that man to revive a concept with a particularly English twist!

And because a bit of vintage Rodnik will always have a place in my heart:

Yes! She is dramatic & exaggerated. But do I love her style? You bet!!!. Italian fashion writer, Anna Piaggi, is the real definition of quirky, non-comformist style. This is one woman that isn’t afraid to express herself through her style. The way she mixes prints, patterns, & colors is pretty amazing. I just thought to do a spread on her – hoping each of us can get at least a bit of inspiration from her.

Tapa is the pioneer of paper, made by the Ituri, Pygmy of Congo. Matter softer than Papyrus, painted by women under hallucinogenics. Wow! A resume of men history in an exhibition gathering pop art, artists, fashion designers, restoration of Japanese Edo era’s clothes etc… A real pleasure! The scenography is simple and fun. An eclectic walk in times and cultures for our eyes. « Light » as a sheet of paper! And for all like me who doesn’t read captions at exhibitions, enjoy reading the small booklet at a table outside, under the spring sunshine! Quick and interesting! Anna Piaggi. Fashion journalist of Vogue, Italy. I have so much respect for her sense of fun and uncompromising taste in fashion. Wouldn’t it be great seeing people on the street dressed so colourful? I’m not so bold though. I’d love to rummage through her wardrobe. There would be so many interesting pieces – haute couture, real vintage, custom-made designs no doubt. It isn’t common to see a woman of this age dress so daringly and outrageous. I love her for it. And she’s been friends w/ Jenny Kee since the 60s. I was excited when I found that out – a link between creative people.

Bei Louis Vuitton (Chefdesigner Marc Jacobs) fand der ganze Tribal-Hype mit Anlehnung an afrikanische und indianische Stämme endlich eine Daseinsberechtigung, denn Jacobs gelang es eine prachtvolle UND tragbare Kollektion abzuliefern, die europäischen Schick ebenso huldigt wie den exotischen Sinn fürs Schmücken. I’ve already started my Fall school schedule, but I have just found out about a class I would love to add.  Too bad it is in Italy, and not at UCLA.  Sigh – we never get Italian fashion writers!

Anna Piaggi told Fashion Week Daily: “I’m very excited because I’m traveling to the center of Italy, for a lecture at the University of Urbino…” and “The lesson will be based really on my words, and nothing else.”

I would love to listen to whatever lesson she has planned, and I would promise to take good notes for all my readers.
