I didn’t have regular internet access for a good chunk of the year (until August) and got out of the habit of posting here; this is a summary, but I don’t know that he did much outside of the big tours. He moved his site in the spring to ju-ken.velvet.jp and his blog to blog.ju-ken.velvet.jp; currently (Dec. 2009), the old site and blog are still up.

He is on the cover of the January 2010 Bass Magazine (on sale December 19, large image from amazon.jp)

Live:

I don’t know if he would have been in any TV appearances or anything else during that time; he was in the Platinum Box IX (recorded in 2008 and released January 2009).

VAMPS – everything they did, I think (live, TV, PVs, DVD, some recording (I think there were two bassists credited on their album))

Quintillion Quiz – a number of lives in the first half of the year; they were on hiatus for a bit (one date in August, few blog updates since then; as near as I can tell, Mine had some health problems), but have updated again and have a date in January 2010 and will hopefully have more in the future.

What do I need in order to go on living
Without dressing myself up like this
What should I believe in without being able to believe even in myself
The answer is so close, I can’t see it

*The black tears flow

Is living without dressing
The most difficult thing in this world?
If I could have something from you, I’d like something intangible
I no longer need something that can break

**Even if I scream with the black tears flowing
Tomorrow will come with an unknown face
And I’ll run into the same pain

Reviewed by: Marty Director: Mika Ninagawa Screenplay: Yuki Tanada, from the manga by Moyoco Anno Ca

Reviewed by: Marty

Director: Mika Ninagawa

Screenplay: Yuki Tanada, from the manga by Moyoco Anno

Cast: Anna Tsuchiya, Kippei Shiina, Hiroki Narimiya, Yoshino Kimura

Music: Ringo Shiina

First and foremost, probably the only reason why I went out of my way to tape Sakuran on SBS2 was that Ringo Shiina wrote the music for it, and I was interested to see how one of my favourite musicians, adept seemingly only in songwriting, would fare with scoring a film. Of course, instead of the score being a lush and epic orchestral one – which you would have normally expected it to be if you looked at a still or trailer of the film – Ringo’s voice appears a lot in it, which ended up suiting both her writing style and the vibe of the film. But this isn’t a music blog, is it?

Sakuran details the lives of the Chrysanthemum House’s many courtesans, in particular the life span of Kiyoha (Tsuchiya), a rebellious and stubborn girl, who was sold to the House as a young child. Despite her mischievous exploits as she grows up, she serves as a maid to the almighty oiran of the house – that is, the highest rank of courtesan, and the most popular and beautiful – until she herself is old enough to be initiated into courtesan-hood. Before long she finds herself falling in love with a seemingly faithful customer named Sojiro (Narimiya), however events in a feudal-era Japanese courtesan house, if anyone who has read ‘Memoirs of a Geisha’ would be aware, are hardly ever empathetic to their employees, and as Kiyoha’s lover disappears from her, she becomes hardened to every pain that befalls her, until her transition into immoral, indifferent mistress becomes complete, and she is elevated to oiran status.

In the tradition of films with not too much plot and lots of stunning visuals here at Movie-Quatic, here is a film with not too much plot and lots of stunning visuals. In all seriousness though, the plot in this film wasn’t actually too bad – it just moved way too slowly, and never really got anywhere. It lacked the epic integrity of something like Memoirs of a Geisha (sorry to keep refrencing that, it’s just the obvious comparison for a film like this; the film adaptation of Memoirs was pretty average in any case) and in terms of character development, Kiyoha was basically too unbelievable. The courtesans weren’t geishas, I gather, but they almost seemed to be semi-geishas, or closer to modern-day gyaru: adorned by piles of combs with jewel hangers and gigantic hair chopsticks, but also outlandish eyelash extenders and massive false nails with decorations on them. Sure, all this peering into the luxury-ridden lifestyle of old Japan is interesting, but I don’t think it was too accurate – and to address the original point of this paragraph, it seemed like it sacrificed its plot to make way for how the film looked. The acting, too, was incredibly low standard, particularly by Kuranosuke (Shiina).

Kiyoha, as a young girl, vowed to escape the Chrysanthemum House and the life of a courtesan, but as she becomes an oiran – a position which probably fit her well because of her take-all nature – she seems to love the attention and being at the mercy of all who work below her. Perhaps, then, Sakuran is a study of Tsuchiya’s character, which seems to almost be interesting: Kiyoha goes through so many moods and dispositions that it’s really quite hard to know what she really wants and what she really thinks about herself. This makes it a bit difficult to sympathise with her character overall. It’s obvious that she’s troubled in her life as a female servant, but just when she seems ready to snap, all of a sudden the film cuts to a scene of immense tranquil beauty, where Kiyoha is seated beneath a blooming sakura at night, or something along those lines, appearing serene and wise. She would be an interesting person to study if she wasn’t so frustrating to watch. Not to mention the fact that she is only half-Japanese, and it certainly is noticeable – in many scenes, she bears a striking (or disturbing) resemblance to Angelina Jolie. BUT that’s a racial discussion of which I won’t go into, because she was mostly beautiful anyway.

Of course, the film looks amazing. The colours are definitely the stand-out point for this film: delightful cocktails of scarlet red, gold, light blue and pink abounds, and when the oiran that precedes Kiyoha, Takao (Kimura), happens upon the wrong end of a throat-cutting, the blood that splashes the walls and tatami is almost beautiful and artistic. The framing is commendable, be it Kiyoha waking up to a field of sakura beneath her window, or a lone tree covered with snow framed in the roofed walkways between sections of the Chrysanthemum House.

So, in conclusion, I’ll just say that this film was great to look at for a while, but I found myself becoming frustrated with it within a very short time – something that doesn’t usually happen very often when I sit down to watch a film. It tried to be beautiful and bittersweet, but it just ended up being exactly what its protagonist, Kiyoha, essentially was – a troubled individual with nowhere to go. Oh, but the music – yes, the music was amazing. In itself.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRH_GYnx9IQ&feature=related – a mash-up of clips from the film put to the song ‘Gamble’ by Ringo Shiina, probably the best track off the film’s soundtrack, played when Kiyoha is paraded down the street as an oiran. the version in the film was much more grungy.

I seem to be on a Japanese drama and film binge. I cannot seem to get enough of the stuff. And it do

I seem to be on a Japanese drama and film binge. I cannot seem to get enough of the stuff. And it doesn’t help that you can watch so much Japanese TV (from the new to the very nostalgic 80s stuff from my childhood) with a click of your mouse pad. But, I’ve been eyeing Sakuran for a while now since it was first released in 2007. There was a lot of publicity, and although I hadn’t seen any of Tsuchiya Anna’s work at that time, I have since watched Shimotsuma Monogatari (Kamikaze Girls) which I really liked. The costumes, the visuals and the soundtrack (especially the main song by Shiina Ringo) of Sakuran all drew me to the film. Plus I was also watching a lot of Ōoku (or Oh-Oku), a Japanese historical drama series about the great interior of the Shogun’s palace where the women resided and into which only the Shogun could enter. It was riveting stuff with lavish costumes, traps and manipulative women all vying for love and power.

Based on a manga by Anno Moyoko, Sakuran follows the tale of Kiyoha who is sold to Tamagikuya, a brothel in Yoshiwara, the pleasure quarter in Edo (old Tokyo) frequently depicted in the ukiyo-e of some of Japan’s most famous artists such as Utamaro, Hiroshige and Hokusai. Once in, no woman can leave unless they have paid off their debt or their contract bought out by a client. Kiyoha resolves to leave one day when the sakura blossoms in Yoshiwara where there are no cherry trees except for one gnarled stump. She becomes a successful courtesan eventually becoming an oiran, the highest level courtesan in the pleasure quarter. Sakuran is a play on the word oiran (made up of the two kanji for flower and best/first) which substitutes the word for flower with cherry blossom (sakura). So oiran becomes sakuran.

The feel of the film was in keeping with Shimotsuma Monogatari with its technicolour brilliance and a very modern soundtrack courtesy of Shiina Ringo. The directorial debut of photographer Ninagawa Mika, Sakuran is a very pop and slick film, yet it manages to retain the poignancy and bittersweet edge from which you cannot totally escape when telling the tale of an oiran. Kiyoha is such a strong character yet has a vulnerability which keeps you hoping that one day she will find happiness. You want her to succeed even within the harsh and confined world of Yoshiwara.

I loved this film. It was cool and beautiful yet pulsating with energy. It’s a film about longing, and Tsuchiya Anna’s portrayal of Kiyoha is a mixture of charm, coquettishness and sorrow and is wonderful to watch. And did I mention how divine Ando Masanobu is? As well as his killer looks, his character Seiji reminded me a bit of Elizabeth Gaskell’s Mr. Thornton. Enough said.

And finally, the difference between an oiran and geisha is explained here.

You can see the trailer for Sakuran here.

I’ve posted earlier about my love for the cool Anna Tsuchiya and her break-out role in the movie, Kamikaze Girls.
By now, you’ve probably realized that this site’s name was born out of that funny, endearingly cool movie.

I’ve always have an affinity to Japanese movies more than the films churned out by my own country. I’ve seen and fallen in love with a lot of ‘em: Okurubito (Departures), Must Love Dogs, Ringu, Death Note…but Kamikaze Girls is the one movie that captured senseless my kawaii-lovin’, Japanese-speakin’ heart.

The movie is about two girls: Ichigo (a yanki) and Momoko. FYI: A Yanki is a boyish, tough lady gangster who belongs in a bosozuku gang (a motorcycle gang) while Momoko is a Lolita (girls who dress like dolls) who adore the shop, Baby the Stars Shine Bright.

You may read the rest of the story and summary here and here

I had a sex dream with anna tsuchiya, which is big awesome magical tings for me. so, i had a boy friend in this dream for some reason, but then i hear this electric guitar music (the one that plays in shimotsuma monogatari every time ichigo comes along) and i know it’s her and i know she is my lovah. she looks exactly like she does in shimotsuma. she is in her motorcycle, which is much cooler than the one in the movie, and i climb in. we go to my house (in a montevideo/paris amalgam) and we have sex. I’ll spare the details but it was HOT. then like, any other dream, she disappears and turns into another person, and i spend the rest of the dream trying to find her, but that is not important because i had sex with anna tuschiya! in my head.

Consider Anna:

"Lucy’ – From Nana the Movie (BlackStones)

"I’m Addicted to You" (from Kuroi Namida single)

"Cocoon"

What I like about Anna is that she’s unique compared to the typical female Japanese singer.
As much as I love anything JPop (and Japanese for that reason) but let’s admit that most female singers have this annoying pa-cute voice. And more often than not–they have this pre-packaged image that you don’t get their personality anymore.

I first saw Anna Tsuchiya on a CNN interview and I was impressed. Where did this girl come from? Turns out–she’s everywhere in Japan! And did I mention that she’s one of the leads in Kamikaze Girls (with Kyoko Fukada)?

Before I reduce myself to a slobbering, raving lunatic–I’ll shut up.
Losing coolness factor is not exactly cool if I am ANNA TSUCHIYA!

I watched this film a few weeks ago and was totally bowled over. It had been on my radar for a number of years now since its release in 2004, but I wasn’t particularly drawn to it as I had no interest in the gothic lolita trend that was sweeping Japan and slowly travelling to the West. But Shimotsuma Monogatari was a bright, funny and poignant film about friendship, fitting in and chasing your dreams.

The style of the film is similar to that of director Tetsuya Nakashima’s subsequent film Kiraware Matsuko no Isshou (Memories of Matsuko) which I saw a few years ago, a technicolour pop extravaganza that seems to be at odds with its weighty themes but works brilliantly.

The protagonists Momoko and Ichigo, played by two of Japan’s most talked about actresses Kyoko Fukada and Anna Tsuchiya, are both charmingly contrary and you can’t help but want them to succeed. There are a lot of comic moments in the film, especially in the beginning when we are a given a technicolour kaleidoscope of Momoko’s background and upbringing, especially her petit yakuza father’s dodgy business: flogging pirate brand goods which became a surprise cult hit.

After getting caught and threatened with legal action, Momoko and her father make a quick getaway to live with her grandmother in a sleepy town called Shimotsuma, where the locals all shop for clothes at Jusco, Japan’s Wal-Mart. Momoko, who spends all her time alone, has one passion, and that is for the lolita fashion brand Baby, The Stars Shine Bright. It isn’t cheap to go all the way to Tokyo to shop for clothes and Momoko soon needs to look for ways to fund her lolita fashion lifestyle, and she does so by selling her father’s long-forgotten knock-offs. And that is how she meets Ichigo, a member of the local ladies motorbike gang, Ponytails. The two strike an unlikely friendship and the film follows their transformation as they realise what they mean to each other.

Shimotsuma Monogatari is a comic, yet poignant, portrayal of smalltown Japan, slowly vanishing as it is consumed by the ever encroaching urban sprawl. The message I got was that wherever you are, you should follow your dreams and that there is always someone you can bond with even in the most unlikeliest of places. I know it sounds cheesy, but what a great film.
