By: James Bogacz

This album starts off with a song that sounds like something a middle-aged woman would gladly listen to on her way home from church some random Sunday. Then the song, “Special Delivery,” could be heard later that day at a wedding. It’s got a cool beat box consisting of hits that are crunchy, steady, and funkalishiss. The title track, “Concrete World and the Lover’s Dream” sounds a little like that K.T. Tunstall track, “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree.” It’s real straightforward.

There might even be a looper pedal used on it. “Come on in My Kitchen” is the first track with a harmonica on it. And, it’s a wailing one at that. The musical prowess is evident in the logical progression involving the two and five chords. The song has aggressive vocals. It has a great, almost jazzy vibe.

The following track, “What’s Going On,” is also jazzy. But, it’s more relaxed. It goes well after the previous song. Male vocals do fills on it. They are the first and only ones on the album. I would have liked them to trade more parts rather than just have them backing with fills.

“Write Me a Few of Your Lines” make me feel like I need a piece of hay in my mouth. “Liar’s Day” has a Mystic feel. The chords are very cool. Droning, screaming harmonica are the backing the vocals. This cat is truly singing with the harmonica. It almost doesn’t even sound like a harmonica. It was mixed intelligently along with the rest of the album, which is without mistake.

“Fall” has a simple plucking of the guitar. But, it is perhaps the most boring track on the album. “Sunday River” has no intro but one isn’t needed. The beautiful piano takes you away with the emotional lyrics. Another missing part is drums (also not needed for this track). There is a chorus of talented voices singing gospel like. So, all in all, this track is one in its own. It is very full sounding in its own way.

“Shadow of Doubt” is next and the bluesiest one (slow too). “These Days” is the last track. But, I believe it is a bad closer. It leaves you sad. It’s a personal look inside someone’s life. It is a regretful look at that. Don’t get me wrong. It’s a beautiful song. It’s about how things are different now.

This disc is good. It’s just not for everyone. There are a lot of diverse sounds on it. If you like wailing women with great stories you best recognize.
