Avid reader that I am, as well as ardent fact-checker, I have come across a different interpretation

Avid reader that I am, as well as ardent fact-checker, I have come across a different interpretation regarding the symbolism of Nandi/Nandhini as discussed in this post. According to A.L. Basham, in his book The Wonder that Was India , Nandi is Siva’s BULL, and Siva, himself, is called “the bullrider” in Brahmin poetry. This description fits the imagery of Anniyan on his website, as the punisher, as well as Anniyan, the personality, who rides one of the bulls that are being herded into the cave where they trample his first victim.

This could mean one of two things: I am full of shit, OR the symbolic meaning is even more complex than I had originally thought.

Today I purchased a book at full retail price, at an actual retail bookstore, it was quite traumatic

Today I purchased a book at full retail price, at an actual retail bookstore, it was quite traumatic considering the years of thrift/yard sale/internet treasures I have found. That has nothing to do with the topic, other than a tidbit of information that leapt out at me, while reading it.

This caused a thought (I know, frightening, I try to keep them repressed) regarding the lead female character, Nandhini, in the movie Anniyan, and the pet name used by Remo (one of Ambi’s personalities) for her. He calls her, ‘Nandi’, which didn’t mean anything to me, until today– until I started reading the unabridged original version of the Kama Sutra, along with commentaries by a couple of important ancient dead guys, and translated by Alain Danielou. I haven’t gotten to the naughty bits yet, I’m still learning about the history and background, which is the nub of my gist (shoutout to my boys, Monty Python, yo s’up!), which leads me to my point: According to the mythology, the goddess Nandi, who was the lover of Shiva, determined the original 1000 chapters of the Kama Sutra. This was summarized down to 500 chapters, and then centuries later, summarized down to 150 chapters. This was then translated into English by Sir Richard Burton, in 1883.

I swear that I am trying to avoid digressing, but it actually rather fascinating, considering the base assumptions I had about the Kama Sutra, with no thought as to the veracity of those assumptions. Anyways, despite the many translations, re-interpretations, and revisions, this contemporary translator went back to the original 500 chapters for his translation. Somebody buy that man a cup of coffee. So, anyways. Nandi-consort of Shiva, author of the book of love (note to self: Write to the 50s band, The Monotones, and let them know), and convenient nickname for the rampwalk model/lover/studmuffin version of our shy strict religious hero, Ambi, who reverently refers to his beloved by her given name. Nandhini is the sanskrit name (according to legend) for the mother of all cows, gifted by Lord Indra, to feed the masses and make their wishes come true.

So Ambi/Remo is creating an alter ego for his love-interest, that fits their individual perspectives, and represents the opposing attitudes of each, that being erotic love and deeply worshipful.

For those interested: The Complete Kama Sutra, ISBN: 080892815258

I don’t want to know how much I could have saved if I purchased it online, hence the lack of actual book links. FYI, this version has no pictures, so you’ll have to rely on your own imagination for shock and titillation. I’ll post excerpts, if I can come up with suitable movie scenes that I can force some academic connection with.

Kanthaswamy movie result sent Vikram to rethink his plans. He did more than two movies every year before Anniyan. But after Anniyan he did mostly a movie at a time. His fans disappointed with this. Much awaited movie Kanthaswamy failed to live upto the expectations in Telugu it was an utter flop.

Now Vikram changed his plans and doing two movies at a time. 24 is one of his movie ready to hit the sets by the end of December and on the other hand Selva Raghavan’s movie is already going in Ladakh. Swathi is going to appear along with Vikram.

According to the Kollywood circels information. He is in story discussions with other star directors like K.S.Ravi Kumar and Linguswamy.

We managed to catch the latest Tamil blockbuster, Kandasamy in Taiping’s latest cineplex last week or so and since the cineplex was quite new, the seats were comfortable and the sound system was outstanding.

(Vikram surrounded by the Mexican drug dealer and bodyguards when he is on trail of black money)

The Plot

The story from Snastavirs’ blog:-

Kandasamy opens with scenes showing ordinary people flocking to a Murugan temple which has become famous as all your wishes can be fulfilled at the temple. All those who submit their woes as petitions to Kandasamy (another name for Lord Muruga) on a piece of paper and tie it to a tree in the temple, their problems mainly financial are solved.

Soon Kandasamy (Vikram) becomes a phenomenon, a caped crusader dressed as a rooster, takes up letters of ordinary folks from the petition tree, and in a Robin Hood way provides cash and succor. The local DIG of Police (Prabhu) suspects that there is something unnatural about it and starts investigating. Meanwhile there is this brave and daring CBI officer Kandasamy (Vikram), who is on a mission to uncover black money and illegal wealth of rich and corrupt Indians stashed in foreign banks, which he believes is responsible for all the crime in our society. And our hero has the IQ of a genius, the strength of a bull and the speed of a cheetah.

Soon he crosses swords with Pallur Paramajyoti Ponnusamy or PPP (Ashish Vidyarti), the man with a golden tooth and conducts a raid in his palatial bungalow and finds unaccounted cash and documents of various foreign deals worth over Rs 1000 crore! PPP is devastated after the raid and his only daughter Subbalakshmi (Shriya Saran) swears revenge and pretends to fall in love with the dashing IPS officer.

What is the connection between masked crusader Kandasamy and the CBI officer Kandasamy? Why is the CBI Joint Director Krishna Rao (Telugu actor Krishna) protecting Mr. Kandasamy? Can the villains- PPP, Rajmohan of RMG group, and Mexican Pitchumani (Alex) expose and bring Kandasamy to trial? Will the DIG succeed in proving that Kandasamy is no God?

The underlining message in the film is, “Money (read black) is the root cause of all evil”.

(Story within a story – the fight and romance between Vikram & Shriya – unfortunately a distraction to the key storyline)

Storyline

Kandasamy tackles the same issue as in the Rajini’s Sivaji – the influx of ‘black money’ and how it is creating havoc on the ordinary citizens. In both movies, the ‘hero’ gets the money out from the rich & powerful and into the hand of ordinary citizens.

With Vikram in the lead, one can trace elements of Anniyan in this movie. However, there are several key differences between the 2. The dark character in Anniyan was quite evil and did not hesitate to kill if things are not done the right way. In Anniyan, Vikram played an innocent Ambi who was a lawyer who suffers from Multiple Personality Disorder.

In Kandasamy, Vikram plays a powerful CBI officer and is helped by a group of friends from various enforcement agencies and who are working for both sides (the good guys and bad guys) and indirectly assisted by the CBI department head himself. The fight scenes were more logical this time as Vikram was not alone when fighting several bad guys. Despite and obvious ‘loophole’ (how come the bad guys did not noticed this?), his friends helped out in the background with pulleys, special effects and music. And instead of correcting the wrongful with cold blood murder,

Vikram plays a cooler headed Robin Hood who takes black money from the rich and gives it out to the poor without much violence (except during the climax).

(Vikram in disguise and in fight with a corrupt policeman in the opening scene of the movie – it was one of the best opening so far, with fast paced music and background)

Directorship

Susi Ganesan may be a new name when it comes to Tamil movies but he had worked in many movies before especially the master Mani Ratnam in several movies. And he made sure the storyline remains logic and no major bad acting evident in the movie. The CBI investigations are done rather meritoriously.

The scenes in Mexico were well directed and the sinister side of the drug dealers shines. Cinematographer N K Ekambaram’s work is excellent especially at the close ups and the scenes in Mexico – not too creative but enough to ensure the scenes are crystal clear.

(The many faces of Vikram in the movie – he also acted as an old man and a lady)

Acting

Vikram as usual shines in his role as the tough CBI officer who is also playing a ‘robin-hood’ role at night. Whilst Vikram handled the more serious side of the story, comedian Vadivelu had us entertained with his usual comical stints. The funniest part would be when he decided to dress up like the mysterious Kandasamy and on the way to make quick money, get entangled with the policeman who was bashed by the real Kandasamy. Shriya looks good in between the story gap and does nothing much other than providing candy for the eyes.

Music

Devi Sri Prasad a seasoned Tamil music director shined with interesting hits for this movie. The theme song – Kandasamy was motivational and inspiring. The others like Excuse Me Mr. Kandaswamy and Mambo Mamiya are also catchy and nice to hear. The ‘cat’ song was a total waste of screen time and talents but I guess it is a norm to have 1 or 2 bad songs.

Final say

The plus points: The plot (not original but has more logic this time), music and comedy

The negative points: Love scenes (I think directors should make up their mind on the main theme of their films – action movie or romance movie – please stick to just one)

Artificial Intelligence, Super Computing, Cryptography, Hacking, Super Hero Concepts etc are the are

Artificial Intelligence, Super Computing, Cryptography, Hacking, Super Hero Concepts etc are the areas of interests of Hollywood directors that make the movie a Hi-fi entertainer. First time in the history of Tamil film industry, the audiences have been given an opportunity to witness a Super hero movie with Zero Logic with the perfect blend of Entertainment and a strong message which will undoubtedly ignite a spark towards a renaissance in the economic situation of our Country.

To put it in few simple words, the movie is all about helping those poor and needy people who still crave for a square meal, by flicking enormous amount of illegal money from Rich and whooping wealthy people who store wealth legally, converting them to documents or foreign currency and amass it in foreign banks.

The story kicks off in a Murugan Temple where a lady ties a piece of paper in a tree writing their grief and wishes in a few lines. The custom of tying these papers in the bark of a tree is the tradition followed in the southern parts of India where God listen to your prayers and makes the wishes comes through. Of course the lady’s wish of a few amount of money comes true with a sack of money lying at the backyard of her house. Soon the news of wishes coming true that are tied in the tree spread like a forest fire and flocks of people visit the temple tying the paper. In case, the money doesn’t reach the concerned person, our Super Hero Kandasamy clad in the black cloak with red wings like cloth strip attached to it, comes in the air and flying and sweeping across walls (like a spiderman) and teaches them appropriate lessons without letting them know that, it is happening in real (though the sequence happens in real) leaving a mark of the “Vel” in the cheeks. Next morning when the attacked victim gets up, only to remember the incident as a Nightmare and with dizzy mind, the mark remains in the face! Each of the people’s wish list is satisfied by clearly categorizing their needs and delivering the money (which is captured during raids) to the appropriate people by appropriate means. The people in the village assume this to be the work of the Lord Kandasamy. But it is all the work of the alter ego Kandasamy who has a well planned operation for each delivery. He even satisfies the wish of a common man of wanting Aishwarya Rai in the terrace, by his Woman form and with due frightening.

The sturdy, manly, fit and strong IPS Officer Kandasamy belonging to the Economic Offense Wing of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) spontaneously gives command to the officers for the raid into the house of multi billionaires and millionaires who are the big shots in the country. It all starts with the raiding operation that was set to happen at PPP’s (Ashish Vidhyarthi) House. His body language is well tuned, and maneuvered. His mature looks and fit body adds to his performance. Not to mention the costumes of Vikram. They are awesome, grand and royal. It stands out separately and portrays Vikram in high profiles. It seems they have spent a lot of amount on the costumes itself.

Within the first song, the secret is exposed that the Super Hero is none other than the CBI Officer himself with the gang of around 11 friends making this Super Hero a happening image. The technology they use, the synchronization in the actions solely controls our super hero’s stunts. May it be the smoke effect or the sound effect, the flying thing or the clutching thing; everything is in the hands of the other 11 fellow mates who control the Super hero. Each one of them is technically sound in their own areas of computer control, motion control, sound engineering and more makes Kandasamy a successful Operation. Both the “Super Hero” and its alter ego “Kandasamy IPS” have played their roles flamboyantly well.

“Kandasamy’ – The Super Hero depicts a rooster. The costume and the mask that conceals his upper part of the face, denotes the same. The body language and the neck movement exactly coincides with that of the rooster. The “Kok Kok” sound that is produced by the hero shows the mannerism of the super hero which creates havoc in the stomachs of the so called Bad-Guys in the movie. The movie depicts the hero who is skilled in the Martial arts including Karate and the Tai Chi. The moves that Vikram delivers on the opponents body were simply superb and each blows are stunningly devastating.

The cinematography is one thing which should be greatly appreciated and the only thing which drives the movie till the end without any glitches in the scenes. The camera sees things as how it should be seen by the audience. The movie sequence takes us to the lands of Mexico with the rich cinematography feeding us with the tangy deserts and the landscapes which are feasts to our eyes and hearts. Camera has captured Shriya Saran a lot. Her minimal attire and her costumes well expose her contours of the body. She fits the role of the bond girl perfect. Her expressions and the bodily subtle movements squeeze our hearts to the core. In simple terms, she is sexy, sleek and carries her part well throughout the movie. “Allegra” proves to be a good add on to the Music.

The Mexico travel that the hero undergoes with Shreya under the garb of transferring an enormous amount of dollars to her father’s account, seems to be national level operation to investigate the Indian money that were dumped in the foreign countries making India in debt to many of the nations of the world. This is revealed only towards the end of the movie

The movie is seems to be a blend of “Anniyan” and the “Sivaji” which conceptualizes helping the poor and needy and removing the “incorrectness” from the society. The wealthy ones who accumulate money illegally have an account in the foreign banks and deposit the money safe and secure thus making our country economically and financially challenged. Kandasamy, the CBI officer unearths money and assets from various people who conceals them in the walls of their compound walls, Under the Tiles of Flooring and in the body of the VOLVO AC Buses. The last one in the sequence, which comes as a surprise when the Hero unveils whooping documents, foreign currencies and other belongings in front of the whole crowd in the climax.

Prabhu as usual played his part simply well, without making a fool out of himself (“Yenna Kodumai Saravanan” Kinda). His role as a DIG investigating the Kandasamy case is well written. He was trying to prove that the wishes coming true, is not the work of the divine intervention but it’s just the operation carried out by a common man who is either so rich or a fool. His appearance was full of dignity and resembles the prabhu of the Movie “Billa”. Vadivelu’s comedy track doesn’t seem to tickle the laughing senses towards the end.

The message that the movie is trying to convey is well written and delivered. This movie throws insights on the financial frauds that people carry out by accumulation of excess money in different forms. This is not a first time movie for Vikram to play the role of a cop. But the Hollywood feeling that the movie offers by the hero belonging to the Economic Offence Wing of CBI makes it commercial and rich. The Toyota, Nissan and other heavy vehicles that ply on the roads shows the richness of the movie and the status of the officers. The director himself plays a role towards the end of the movie.

When there are positives, there will be some negatives too. If people are going to turn up with some expectations in the logic, then there will be disappointments. This is a full entertainer with Zero Logic. You cannot simply put question on how is Vikram able to answer the 3 level password questions posed by the Mexico Banking Website, sitting in the pool in Mexico, with his laptop and the girl by the side with smart and clever interrogation to Shriya, related to the password. You cannot ask, will a Tai Chi trained martial art fighter with his eyes covered, will be able to fight with five or six opponents surrounded in a isolated landscape by just hearing the sound of the footsteps and the persons’ breathing.

The reason that Vikram delivers to the Villain with a Video clip in the luxurious Bus of the latter, for demanding the other part of the lump some money that the former was promised to offer, was really touching and there was no “Bakwas”. The demand was genuine but it was void of logic. The justification that Vikram gives is acceptable.

Hope the message reached the mass. This good try by Susi Ganesan and the output has come out well. One thing worth mentioning in the movie is, this is not just another super hero movie where the identity and the techniques of carrying out super hero task would be explained and exposed in the climax (like that of the “Anniyan”). Everything is exposed in the first song itself. How the operation is carried out, how the super hero flies in the air, how the other 11 folks controls the super hero flight and actions. Everything is clearly explained. But the story still moves with full interest and vigor. I should say, the director has come out with such a story with guts of exposing the crux behind a super hero movie in the start and still keeping audiences occupied in the story.

The movie ends with the Vikram giving an interview to the press reporters after returning back to India, collecting all the details about the Indian money dumped illegally in the lands of Mexico and further plans to unveil all the money that are secured illegally in other countries as well.

To conclude, Kandasamy is worth watching and a full time entertainer with rich visuals. You may not have a second thought in the money spent for ticket.

Watch it in theatres!!

Aparichit was a remake of Tamil super hit film Anniyan. This movie was directed by S.Shankar. Vikram

Aparichit was a remake of Tamil super hit film Anniyan. This movie was directed by S.Shankar. Vikram who is acting opposite Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in Raavan is the hero in this movie. Actually S.Shankar planned to remake this film in Bollywood. But no hero has dared to act in that complex character. So he dubbed it into Hindi.

Ambi (Vikram) is a middle class lawyer who is innocent and honest. He always tackles the cases which have justice and he also tackles for free of cost for poor people. He always wants Indian society to be ideal and every person must help others. He falls in deep love with his neighbour Nandini (Sadha).

When Nandini rejects his love he jumps into a river. The next day Nandini meets a model Remo (Vikram). In the same time an unknown person Aparichit (Vikram) kills the people who are doing mistakes in society. All the people feels Vikram is in triple action. But he is only one. Because of his split personality he behaves like that. According to his emotions Ambi behaves like Remo and Aparichit. In normal time he behaves like Ambi.

Actually Vikram has to receive a National Award for this film. But award committee felt it was an artificial story. Prakash Raj played an investigative officer role. He featured in a different role. Actually Aishwarya Rai was to play the role of Nandini.

This movie collected 1000 million in South India and 20 million in Hindi. Movie got good reviews in Bollywood but because of lack of known star cast the movie failed to attract people to
