I was going to hold off on making this announcement until Monday, but after today’s championship game I just don’t see the point in prolonging the inevitable. More than likely, this is the last post of Tusker House.

I remain hopeful of the UFL’s success and a believer in what the league is trying to do. I just don’t have the time available to write about them anymore. It’s time for me to take my place in the stands as a fan, not a writer. My work with the site has led to some wonderful opportunities in the sports world, so I’m going to follow them and see where it goes.

I’d like to thank Nation Hahn of UFL Access and Rachel Gary, PR director for the UFL, for helping to make Tusker House such a success in it’s short lifetime. I’d also like to thank Kip Watson for being such an excellent co-host of the liveblog sessions. Literally, I wouldn’t have been able to do them without you.

Thanks goes out to the Tuskers’ staff and players for welcoming me into practices to cover them. I know the season didn’t end as we’d hoped, but that’s sports for you. For the last time, to Terrance Melton, it’s a satchel. Not a purse. I can’t keep two cameras and a notebook in one pocket.

Finally, and most importantly, thank you to all of my readers. A blog about a minor league/developmental league football team in it’s inaugural year doesn’t get 28,000+ hits in just 4 months by accident. You guys are largely responsible for my opportunity, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

If you’re curious about what I’ll be doing next, stay tuned next week. Hopefully I’ll have an announcement for everyone on Monday or Tuesday.

Good luck next year! GO TUSKERS!

Shock over Obama Decision to Reject Landmine Ban

By Jeffrey Allen – Nov. 26, 2009 OneWorld.net

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration announced yesterday that it would not be joining a treaty signed by 158 other countries to ban landmines. Human Rights Watch (HRW) said the decision “lacks vision, compassion, and basic common sense.”

The group was also stunned by the manner in which the decision was apparently made and subsequently announced.

Although anti-landmine activists and congressional leaders had been urging the administration to begin reviewing the treaty for months, Obama administration officials never indicated that it had even started the process.

HRW said the review must have been done without consulting experts outside the administration, organizations working on the issue, or lawmakers that have been dealing with landmine concerns for years, like Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy.

“The Obama administration’s decision to continue the Bush administration’s policy of refusing to join the international treaty banning antipersonnel landmines is a reprehensible rejection of the most successful disarmament and humanitarian treaty of the past decade,” HRW said….. http://www.commondreams.org/headline/2009/11/26-8

Daphne (20:11:58)

I found this website a few months ago, while creating some graphics for a friend at NOAA. While searching for references of what a “MMTS sensor” looks like, I found out here about the Marysville station, and after exploring a bit in morbid fascination, put the site in my bookmarks.

This week , WUWT has become my favorite site in the whole world.

I am so glad I knew exactly where to turn when this thing broke.
Thank you for all your work here; and thanks to all those leaving comments which educate me by the hour. This has been the most intellectually thrilling week ever!

=======

Thanks! This made my week, maybe my month. My moderation team of Charles, DB, and Evan, who works tirelessly in the background, appreciates this more than you can imagine.

You see, it has been an extraordinarily stressful and exhausting week here at WUWT, trying to keep up with it all. Traffic records have been smashed one day, only to be smashed again the next. Comments are coming at the rate of a couple per second at times. Emails, tips, requests arriving faster than we can deal with them sometimes. It’s been crazy. Add to my duties with Climate Audit and trying to keep it running (the server went into terminal overload) and working on migrating CA to a new location, I haven’t had much time to reflect.

Thank you for the kind words.

- Anthony and the WUWT moderation team.

“The Men Who Stare at Goats” (R) – The Hawai’i Island Connection

In 1979 a secret unit was established by the most gifted minds within the US Army. Defying all known accepted military practice – and indeed, the laws of physics – they believed that a soldier could adopt the cloak of invisibility, pass cleanly through walls and, perhaps most chillingly, kill goats just by staring at them.

Entrusted with defending America from all known adversaries, they were the First Earth Battalion. And they really weren’t joking. What’s more, they’re back and fighting the War on Terror. The Men Who Stare at Goats reveals extraordinary — and very nutty — national secrets at the core of George W. Bush’s War on Terror.

With first-hand access to the leading players in the story, Ronson traces the evolution of these bizarre activities over the past three decades, and sees how it is alive today within US Homeland Security and post-war Iraq. Why are they blasting Iraqi prisoners-of-war with the theme tune to Barney the Purple Dinosaur? Why have 100 de-bleated goats been secretly placed inside the Special Forces command center at Fort Bragg, North Carolina? How was the US Military associated with the mysterious mass-suicide of a strange cult from San Diego? The Men Who Stare at Goats answers these, and many more, questions. (Author’s website)

*Honoka’a People’s Theatre – The Men Who Stare at Goats (R)
775-000 / Showtime: 7 pm Dec. 1, 2, and 3rd
Movie Tickets: $6 adults, $4 seniors, $3 children 12 and under

Comedy, Action and Thriller, 1 hr 33 min. Reporter Bob Wilton is in search of his next big story when he encounters Lyn Cassady, a shadowy figure who claims to be part of an experimental U.S. military unit.
According to Cassady, the New Earth Army is changing the way wars are fought. A legion of “Warrior Monks” with unparalleled psychic powers can read the enemy’s thoughts, pass through solid walls, and even kill a goat simply by staring at it. Now, the program’s founder, Bill Django, has gone missing and Cassady’s mission is to find him. Intrigued by his new acquaintance’s far-fetched stories, Bob
impulsively decides to tag along. When the pair tracks Django to a clandestine training camp run by renegade psychic Larry Hooper, the reporter is trapped in the middle of a grudge match between the forces of Django’s New Earth Army and Hooper’s personal militia of super soldiers. In order to survive this wild adventure, Bob will have to outwit an enemy he never thought possible.

Starring:
George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Kevin Spacey, Jeff Bridges, Rebecca
Mader, Stephen Lang and Robert Patrick

Related:

In 1978, (Hawi resident) U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Jim Channon announced: “I work for the planet.” While at the Army War College in Carlisle Barracks, Channon spent two years researching the value of the human potential movement. He created a proto-mythology for the soldier of the future known as The First Earth Battalion. These warrior monks would dedicate their allegiance, first and foremost, to people and planet.

First getting his foot in the door in 2004 with longtime high school friends and b-ball team mates, collectively known as the Athletic Mic League, Buff has since taken off as a solo artist with two critically acclaimed albums under his belt, a number of successful National and European tours, and a deafening buzz spanning the nation.

His 2007 debut album, “Pure“, gained an overwhelming following and has even been labeled a classic by critics. Okayplayer exclaims “This album, my friends, is incredible…classic like thriller jackets”. Whether it’s on the political, socially conscious, or party tip, Buff’s on it all with an honesty and integrity that mainstream Hip Hop often lacks.

Check out the two videos below, “Beat the Speakers Up” and “Real Appeal”, from his stellar sophomore effort, “There’s Only One”.

First discovered by Slum Village’s Baatin (R.I.P.), the extremely talented emcee/producer has made a name for himself both here in the states as well as overseas while following in the foot steps of the late/great J Dilla and carrying the D on his back. A juggernaut on the boards and the mic, Black Milk’s extensive list of credits spans from work by artists such as Pharoahe Monch, Busta Rhymes, Lloyd Banks, Canibus, Mary J. Blige, KRS-One, Kidz In The Hall, Buckshot, and many others.

Black Milk began his career producing a majority of Slum Village’s post-Dilla body of work as a part of the production team, BR Gunna. However, Black didn’t gain notoriety as an emcee until his 2005 solo debut, “Sound of The City”. The album earned Black his record deal with Fat Beats, on which he also released his lauded sophomore effort, “Popular Demand” in 2007. In the wake of it’s release early in the year, XXL magazine labeled it “the first great album of 2007″.

Black has since released two albums on his own Music House label including his collaboration effort with Fat Ray, “The Set Up”, and the cross-region compilation, “Caltroit” featuring a mean line-up of artists including Ras Kass, Planet Asia, Jake One, Stat Quo, and many more. His third solo album, “Tronic”, boasts Black’s artistic growth both as an emcee and a producer, adding the element of live instrumentation and futuristic synthesizers. Check out the videos for the two singles from the album, “Losing Out” (featuring Royce Da 5′9″) and “Give the Drummer Sum” below. Also be on the look out for the Random Axe (Sean Price/Guilty Simpson/Black Milk) album due out early next year under Duck Down Records.

Anything I would add would only detract from this. From a great commenter and American on this blog, Joyce,

“CW,…. I received this email from a very good friend of mine. He is honest and I know that this is from him.

Just more good things about Sarah Palin. She is an amazing woman who I know loves this country. I hope you can read thru it with out tears. I couldn’t!!!!!!

Joyce”
“This e-mail was sent to me today by my Step-sister xxxxxx xxxxxxx. She took her Dad (my Step-Dad) to meet Sarah Palin yesterday when she was in Birmingham doing a book signing promoting her newly released book. The date was November 22, 2009. I was amazed to hear the story and called her to verify that it happened to her and not just a “forward” that I so often receive.
I took my Dad to meet Sarah Palin tonight. He wore his Marine’s hat and his Purple Heart pin. Before we entered the signing place, we were stopped by Sarah’s aunt. She grabbed my dad’s hand and told him thanks for his service to our country. He was so proud. Next, we waited our turn to meet Sarah. She shook my hand and we exchanged greetings. When I introduced her to my dad, she held (not shook) his hand and thanked him for her freedom – yes, her freedom. She thanked him for his service to our country. My dad began to cry. She
asked where he served, and she told him that her book was in honor of him and his dedication to America . My Dad thanked Sarah for her service and told her how proud he was of her. She then thanked me for bringing my Dad and said God Bless you.

As we were leaving we were stopped by a man who asked to meet my Dad and it turned out to be Sarah’s Dad. He hugged me and thanked me for bringing my Dad & then hugged him and told him it meant so much to him that we took the time to stand in line to meet his daughter. Trying to find his voice, with a face full of falling tears, my Dad said, no… Thank you…thank you for your daughter.
As we left, tears filled Sarah’s father’s eyes and everyone, incuding security and all told him goodbye. As we were leaving, we learned that Sarah stopped by Fort Hood unexpectedly and donated the money from her book signing today to the victim’s families. She is a Great lady!

Hello! I am The Marionette Opera, though that’s not my real name, obviously.

As for me, I’m just your average person, though not so average. xD Music and art are very important to me, and I like to write, draw, paint, and sing. My dream is to become a singer or a novelist, or a mangaka, though that probably won’t happen. xD

In this blog, I’ll be reviewing albums and singles, mostly J-pop, though it may stretch to include any music that I like, C-pop, K-pop, or maybe even music that’s in English, though that’ll be rare >.<

The music I am into is mostly J-pop and J-rock, though I’m pretty much open to any genre. My favorite artists are Sound Horizon, Kalafina, Nana Mizuki, alan, Ayane, anything from Hello!Project, Antic Cafe, Matenrou Opera, Shoko Nakagawa, Aya Kamiki… In C-pop it’s Deep White, milk@coffee, Zhang Shaohan, F.I.R, and Cherry Boom.

Um, so that’s it, basically.

It’s Thanksgiving Day weekend – one of my favorite of the year – because it gives me the chance for some nice, quiet R&D time without the pressure of clients or projects asking to get things done. This week I finally made it through enough of my Objective-C/Cocoa/iPhone books that reading further felt like I was just going over more specialized use cases. For now I don’t foresee the need to have covered every topic before I get started – the basics are covered.

Of the app ideas I had going into this weekend, I chose the simplest (training wheels – crawl before I can walk, right?). It’s a Tabata timer for interval-based workouts. Nothing too special. The basic functionality is there, but I want to pretty it up and add a couple features before submitting it to the app store. I doubt it’ll really make me any money, but I did it for the exercise, not for the big bucks. I’ll post screenshots and links when it’s finished/up.

TVO is exploring the history and impact of reading in its new documentary, Empire of the Word. From prehistoric peoples writing on cave walls to the Internet – the documentary traces readings’ origins; examines how we learn to read; exposes censors’ attempts to prevent our reading; and finally, proposes what the future might hold for this creative act.

Trudy Lothian, President and Chair of the OLC Board of Directors, appeared on TVO’s The Agenda with Steve Paikin on Wednesday, November 25 to help introduce the documentary. Trudy did an amazing job as part of a large panel discussing reading and issues around literacy. She talked in length about the challenges of learning as an adult.
