Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2) was released as a single in the US in late December 1979 during my Freshman year of High School. I have loved this song from the time I first heard it on the radio. It was real popular in school, probably because of the ever-popular “We don’t need no education”…. and…”Hey! Teachers! Leave them kids alone!” choruses from the song that had every kid in school humming the song under his/her breath for the rest of the school year.

Pink Floyd was one of the most popular groups in the world during much of the 1970’s and 1980’s.

I tried Pink Floyd, I honestly did……but I just don’t get it.

I have listened to their music on the radio….. I have bought a few albums……

I have tried listening to their music while relaxed in a darkened room while completely hammered out of my skull drunk….

But….nothing……..What is/was the fuss all about?

I went to a Pink Floyd Concert in London in the mid 1980’s because a ton of people told me “Oh Dude! You have GOT to see Pink Floyd! They will blow your mind!!!”

So, I went with a group of friends, with Another Brick in the Wall being really the only song of theirs that I even knew more than 2 words of.

I endured the 3 1/2 hour-long concert and afterwards, I still didn’t get what the big deal was. I might have been alone, but I was bored silly. Each Pink Floyd song seemed to have a central theme……3 minutes of lyrics…followed by 15 minutes of instrumental solos. They did have cool lights and large screens showing images….but musically….they were very talented but boring as all get out.

I think I would have had a better time at a funeral. At least the music would have been shorter.

Of course, I am an idiot, and was in the minority, as everyone else who attended equated the concert to an earth-shattering, life-altering, religious experience.

Am I alone? Has anyone else out there seen Pink Floyd in concert and left…..”Comfortably Numb” with boredom?

Back to back disappointment. People sometimes ask me why my blog’s title – “i bleed hotspur – a wound that never heals” – is so dramatic. Now I can simply refer to the past two matches and not have to say a single word. I think they’re actually beginning to catch on to be honest. I have been in no shape or mood to write in recent days. I really need to learn to stop letting losses emotionally destroy me.

If I have to say something… anything… then I have 2 words: set pieces. We just don’t have the communication skills required to comfortably defend on set pieces. Gomes was caught off guard and Dawson was in the wrong place at the wrong time (from what I choose to remember). One little mistake that cost us dearly. Worst of all, it was at home to a newly promoted side. No disrespect to Wolves, they fought hard and it paid off.

The positives? Harry actually subbed people at the right time, although I’m not sure that it was Keane who should have been subbed. Defoe seemed off balance that day. We were on pace to score. It was one of those “it’s not a matter of how, but when” moments. But we didn’t which just added another brick to my Tottenham Hotspur wall.

One of the creators of the best Rock band in history Pink Floyd…, along with David Gilmour, Nick Mason, And the Late Richard Wright and Syd Barrett…

Anybody whose anybody that thinks he/she knows music knows at least a couple of albums, and that’s not hard at all with 1973’s Dark Side of the Moon being the third best-selling album of all-time and voted in the top five best albums on almost every Rock site and magazine… You also have 1979’s The Wall which was adapted into the 1982 film by Alan Parker Starring Bob Geldolf, and later in 1990 performed Live in Berlin in front of a staggering sell-out crowd of over 350,000 people, with people from fifty-two countries watching the two-hour event television broadcast.

After Pink Floyd dis-banded in 1985 he continued on leading an amazing career as a solo artist, releasing 3 excellent studio albums (each in its own way), 2 soundtrack albums, one opera (Ça Ira), and playing a number of world tours two of which were released on DVDs (The Wall Live in Berlin, In The Flesh)

I can’t do the man justice writing only a few paragraphs, but there is enough information online, and I’ll give you links and references you can go to learn more about the best songwriter that ever lived… These are my personal opinions and to me there’s no debating the fact that no other artist can ever come close to Roger’s musical and lyrical genius…

What I want to point out in this post is a recent short documentary film Roger was a part of about the humanitarian effects of the separation wall in Palestine… The unjust, unaccepted, and blatant disregard to international laws. A disgusting slap in the face to a people who are now being publicly harassed and stripped away of their most human basic rights and needs… We all know the story, and that’s why we never forget, and we all “try” to “do” something…

My respect goes to all of those people who contributed in making that film, although I know it’s a simple reminder, and it could’ve been much stronger… But for now it’s reassuring to know a film like this can be made… with the help of an international public figure like Roger Waters…

“The reason for walls is always fear, whether the personal walls that we build around ourselves or walls like this that frightened governments build around themselves,” Waters says.

“It fills me with horror, the thought of living in a giant prison,” Waters says as he spray-paints “We don’t need no thought control” on the wall.

As an avid music fan, I love anything to do with music. The other day, I was at a small “unplugged” session held at my school. On that particular day, I found myself more interested in the crowd than the music itself. You see, in a crowd, diversity is the key-different people, different faces!

What i found amusing that day was all the not known and misheard lyrics all around me. It’s fun to be a part of the crowd in a music session. It’s uplifting and highly amusing! Ever heard what the person next to you is singing? They start off humming, not quite sure of the words. Then, sings loudly just as they get the hang of it. Some hits a high note only to scream out the wrong word. While some shrug it off and keeps singing the wrong words others get back to their humming tone. It is funny, really, if you can catch what they are saying. I mean, who wouldn’t smirk if the person next to them is saying, “we don’t need no education, we don’t need no birth control!”

Of course, someone who sees me smiling like a goof during a Pink Floyd song will question my mental well being but if only they knew. So, the next time, if you ever find yourself at a music concert, do keep a look out for misheard lyrics. You might be standing next to the next Weird Al Yankovic!

No meu post anterior, escrevi sobre o novo player de vídeos com temas da Cultura Pop que a Vh1 está lançando e também expliquei como conseguir o seu… mas não mostrei o player em ação! E é isso que veremos aqui…

Como o tema deste primeiro player lançado é o disco “The Dark Side of the Moon”, do Pink Floyd, nada melhor que colocá-lo para exibir um vídeo do grupo inglês.

O vídeo que escolhi é o clássico “Another Brick in the Wall”, de 1979. Para os fãs mais afoitos, eu sei que esta música faz parte do álbum “The Wall”, e não do “The Dark Side of the Moon”, mas acho que tá valendo… o que eu quero mesmo é mostrar o player funcionando!!

9 de novembro de 1989 – 2ª série do primeiro grau, turma 22, tia Margareth, não entendia a importância do pleito que estava para ocorrer em 8 dias. Anos depois, votaria no candidato que ficou em segundo. Se em seu país, não fazia idéia do que estava acontecendo, do outro lado do Atlântico, menos ainda.

O que era aquele muro? Por quê aquelas pessoas estavam, felizes, marretando-o? Sua família, dotada de estúpidos, não sabia lhe explicar. Ficou a ver a cena pela televisão, pessoas chorando, pessoas gritando, e aquele protótipo de pessoa, a não entender.

Ela iria nascer quase 5 meses depois.

Uma deusa. Uma cidade. Uma civilização.

9 de novembro de 2009 – 20 anos se passaram. Hoje a Madonna pousa no aeroporto do Rio, a moça hostilizada pelo colegas(?) de faculdade foi expulsa da instituição, não faz idéia de quantas andam a tia Margareth (lembra-se apenas que ela é irmã da que foi sua professora de matemática na quinta, Lêda), o segundo colocado é o atual presidente, cliente mau-pagador ligando no dia anterior as 21:30 (e isso não se faz! não se liga para casa de quem está [mas há muito não o fazia] prestando serviço, a pedir ‘favores’ – salvo os casos de um contrato de US$ 1.000.000,00 – em pleno domingo) e ele estava cansado (mas não só desse tipo de cliente).

Havia desistido… não queria mais! Estava bem… Ia dormir com seus pensamentos e isso bastava… Nas noites de domingo (sempre as noites de domingo!) eles eram seus melhores companheiros…

Meses atrás estava decidido: prometera ficar só. Não queria mais cobrança, não queria fazer o que não tinha vontade, não queria dar satisfações, não queria mais se machucar. Mas estava bem; estava muito bem.

Quis o destino (um filho-da-puta de marca maior), que as coisas acontecessem de uma forma diferente (e ele só tem a agradecer ao filho-da-puta).

Acabo de ver pelo Wikipedia que no dia de hoje, ao longo da história, aconteceram os seguintes fatos:  em 1888, Jack, o Estripador, faz a sua quinta vítima: Mary Jane Kelly (vejam o ótimo ‘Do Inferno‘) / Em 1953 o Cambodja (cuja capital não é Sean Penn – ‘Friends’) torna-se independente da França / Em 1934 nasce Carl Sagan, astrónomo e astrofísico norte-americano (que infelizmente nos deixou em 1996) / As fêmeas de morcegos da espécie Cynopterus sphinx fazem sexo oral nos machos para prolongar a cópula (estava na primeira página – interessante, não?!).

Muita coisa (ou nem tanta, depende do olho) interessante aconteceu, ao longo da história, na data de hoje. Quem está preocupado em saber se ele está amando, quem era tia Margareth, se está feliz e apaixonado, como anda sua vida, dos clientes malas e afins?

Ele é só um outro tijolo no muro.

Aprovechando el motivo del 20 aniversario de la caída del muro de Berlin, la noche del 4 de noviembre la cadena  MTV organizó un concierto gratuito en la puerta de Brandenburgo con la participación del grupo irlandés U2. Este acto sirvió como precedente para la entrega de los premios MTV que se han entregado esta noche. U2, Beyoncé y Eminem han sido los triunfadores de la gala.  Aquí tenéis diferentes momentos de la actuación que duró alrededor de 30 minutos.

Desde aquí también queremos celebrar la efemérides del fin del telón de acero y para ello os hemos preparado una serie de videos relacionados con la ciudad germana. Pero antes vamos a recordar lo que sucedió aquella noche del 9 de noviembre de 1989 con este breve introducción:

Nos metemos ya de lleno con nuestra colección de canciones. 8 meses después de la caída del “muro de la vergüenza”, el 21 de julio de 1990 Roger Waters organizó una grandiosa actuación conmemorando el suceso que terminaba con la división de las dos Alemanias. Como ya contamos en nuestro post sobre la música de aquel año, el ex- Pink Floyd contó con invitados de lujo para la ocasión. Con Cindy Lauper interpretó el clásico Another Brick In The Wall, que le iba como anillo al dedo a tal evento.

Para hacer su aclamado disco Achtung Baby! los irlandeses U2 se trasladaron a Berlin para grabarlo en los estudios Hansa. Brian Eno volvía a la misma ciudad con la que plasmó en los 70 la etapa berlinesa de Bowie, esta vez como productor. En el álbum había diferentes guiños a la ciudad, como la canción Zoo Station que  hacía referencia a la línea de metro del Zoo que casualmente se llama U2. La continuación fue Zooropa que incluía una canción que aparecería en la película Tan Lejos, Tan Cerca del cineasta alemán Wim Wenders. El video, que lo dirigió el mismo Wenders, está ambientado en Berlin y  junto a Londres y Belfast, también se menciona en la letra.

Se conoce como la “trilogía berlinesa” a los tres discos que David Bowie inmortalizó en Berlin a finales de los 70: Low (1977), Heroes (1978) y Lodger (1979). Producidos todos por Tony Visconti y con la participación estelar de Brian Eno, el “duque blanco” se empapó de diversas influencias germanas tanto artísticas (Kraftwerk, el grupo precursor del tecno) como socio-políticas (división este-oeste del país, etc). Una de sus mejores canciones contaba una historia de unos amantes con el muro de telón de fondo.  En este mismo blog la comparamos con unas versiones que seleccionamos de las muchas que se han hecho. Se titula Heroes y el video es de la época de su Glass Spider Tour.

En 1986 un grupo de nombre Berlin consiguió que uno de sus singles fuera mundialmente conocido gracias a la banda sonora de la película Top Gun. Protagonizada entre otros por Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer y Meg Ryan, el film siempre será recordado con los acordes de fondo de  Take My Breath Away.

Y para terminar qué mejor que hacerlo con una de igual título que la misma ciudad. En 1973 Lou Reed se pegó un enorme batacazo comercial con su disco conceptual Berlin. Durante 33 años no lo tocó nunca en directo. Hoy en día es considerado como una obra maestra a pesar de la desesperanza que respira. La relación entre dos jonkis sirve al neoyorkino para presentarnos un panorama desolador.

Today, I thought I’d play one that was billed as a “Super Rare” video of a concert that clearly didn’t exist. It appears to be a mashup of the Bee Gees Stayin’ Alive, the Beatles Come Together, and Pink Floyd’s Another Brick In the Wall.

I thought it was amusing, anyways. And I like all the listed songs, so…

I guess I’m getting old. I still listen to the music of the sixties and seventies. I still love all the old bands, like Crosby Stills Nash and Young. I still like Pink Floyd although in some ways, it just isn’t the same because I’ve grown up. I like the new music I hear a lot so apparently I’m not stuck in a time warp like some of the generation that is older than me. You know, those bald or gray guys who are bald on top with pony tails in the back (ewww) who listen to fifties music and find fault with the “younger generation” or worse try to be cool by today’s standards by using terms like ‘i’m down with that” (ewww). Stop it grandpa! I think my generation is different (i’m 52). We don’t talk too much about “those kids today” and we don’t waste time complaining about things as much as our forefathers. I wish however, to complain about one thing. Rap music. Please forgive me if this is your favorite type of music. If it is, you are probably reading the wrong blog. What bothers me the most about Rap music other than it is so one dimentional, is that it is so repititious. It’s better than “Techno music” in my opinion which is nothing BUT repitiioun.

The days of the Eagles and meaninglly melodic music that rocks are pretty much over I think. Astract thought in music like the poetic new age jazz music of Steely Dan seems to have disappeared too. My wife is twenty years younger than me and when I talk to her about some of my favorite music she looks at me with a blank stare. Of course the days of my living for music and listening to it every day are gone because I do this thing called “work” which takes up a surprising amount of my day. But I do listen in the shower and I challenge anyone to show me a song today with more genuine feeling than a Janis Joplin song. Songs of that era had feeling because people sang about imortant issues and love was more important in contrast to war. Drugs also played a major role in music (and that’s still true). But without the important issues which served as a vehicle for young people to express their angst and new identities, music has become mundane, repetitious and just plain blah. Does Kansas or Journey ring a bell for you? Wow is the word that comes to mind. Some of the old bands and artists have hung on. While Joplin and Hendrix and a plethora of others have left us, bands like The Eagles, Crosby Stills Nash and bands like Aerosmith have survived. Recently James Brown died. So did the great Ray Charles. Many young people did not know the significance of their lives in the music they listen to every day. They didn’t see a piece of history passing on. They just saw a news report.

Aren’t there important issues today? Of course there are. In fact there are as many important issues today as there ever were. There is also more than one war going on. So, why the apathy and indifference on the part of our Y generation? It’s called distraction by technology. Texting and emailing and listening to music while playing play station4 is hynotizing our youth. And the effects are evident in the music they listen to and what “sells”. It’s all about dancing or music or being a cool street ghetto dude (like the over glorified inner city struggle is so so cool).

Walter Cronkite is dead. And so is non-sensationalistic honest non-partisan honest journalism. I don’t blame young people for not watching the news. After all, other than a few good reporters like Anderson Cooper Of CNN, who can we count on to inform us? So young people are disillusioned with news today. It is so slanted and so partisan and so sensationalistic that all it really does is inspire depression and apathy. While technology has promoted an inability to realate on a human level with others, news has promoted a “who cares” attitude. Some shows that tout themselves as “finding justice” or “news you can use” are nothing more than entertainment for people who like to witness misery. (Nancy Grace would be a good example of the worst kind of jounalism in America) I just wish that before Walter had died he had commented on shows like Nancy Grace. I would have loved to hear what he had to say.

If Walter Cronkite were young again and a news anchor in America, would he talk about the same thing for weeks while bringing you fifteen minutes of actual news? Would he talk about his children and show pictures of them? Would he fake cry about something that is “sad”? Imagine Walter Cronkite screaming a dinasaur’s name and asking her for a comment “JENKASAURUS—–WEIGH IN!!!!” Would Walter Cronkite use dehumanizing terms such as ” tot mom” instead of a person’s name? I don’t think so. Is it any wonder that our children do not care in the least about watching the “NEWS”??

So, how can any song be important or relevant or have genuine feeling and emotion when we have created generations of people who shun emotions because they see them as “fake” I can just see Nancy Graces twins when they start to talk, having a conversation that would go something like this: “Hey Lucy, where’s tot mom? Lucy: “she aint here cause she’s on the tv with Jenkasauraus”. “Oh ok. Well, I don’t like Jenkasaurus as much as Barney do you? She should go on TV with Barney.” “Yeh, yer right!” Johnny: “well can I play with yer doll?” “Which one” “Baby doe” “Baby doe? no, she’s my favorite! I have her hidden so she don’t get abducted by wunna them maniacs tot mom is always talkin about” Oh come on Nancy Tot Mom done tole us that that don’t really happen too much!”

You know, as I am writing, I just realize that Nancy is a “tot mom” and it is only right that we use this label for her since she is so fond of using it on others. So, henceforth, I shall and you should refer to Nancy Grace as “The tot mom” and only “the tot mom” or “tot mom”. She will appreciate it. Believe me.

Other than that, I’m about to hop on a plane and get comfortably numb. I’ll get home just in time to watch the 1 a.m. tot mom report. I hear there’s some breaking news that’s over three months old and I don’t want to miss it.

I was thinking the other day about my pal who thought on the song “Desperado” the Eagles sang, “You’ve been outright offensive, for so long now” instead of “You’ve been out riding fences, for so long now.” She made a good case and almost convinced me, arguing that a desperado who was out for so long wouldn’t smell very good.

I know I’m guilty of singing the wrong words — and often the wrong notes — of popular songs, so I thought I’d do some research, defined today as “time I’d like not spent cleaning the house.”

After you read some of these misheard lyrics you might never be able to sing the right words ever again.

A: The archive started as a spontaneous idea originating out of the Birdhouse Arts Collective in September,1995. The concept was inspired by the mother of a close friend of the founder, who confessed to us that, as a young girl, she had thought that the old church song “A little walk with Jesus” was called “A little chocolate Jesus.” In fact, she never realized her error until she was almost 45 years old.

Q: Is there a technical name for these mishearances?
A: Well, not a technical name as in psychology terminology, but there is an anecdotal name — they’re called mondegreens, and it’s all explained at Mondegreens Ripped My Flesh. [Becky’s note: Read this. It’s funny.]

Jim Coleman offers the following on the subject of mondegreens:

This term was coined when an author was referring to hearing “upon the green” as “mondegreen.” Malachi McCourt, brother of Frank who wrote Angela’s Ashes, titled his autobiography “A Monk’s Swimmin’,” which is how the little Irish boys heard the line from the Ave Maria/Hail Mary “blessed are thou amongst women.”

Historically, mondegreens help to explain the many different lyrics in similar folk songs. In the old Appalachian ballad, Wildwood Flower, one version has the lines “The myrtle so white and its emerald hue, the pale and the leader and islip so blue” while another has “The myrtle so white and its emerald hue, the pale amanita and eyes look so blue.” Amanita is a deadly poisonous mushroom, hardly something for a love lyric.

Sometimes, the mondegreens are intentional. On the John Laroquette show many years ago, there were two cops, one a short woman and the other a rotund middle aged man. The woman once stated that her partner was so food obsessed that he thought the line to the Crystal Gayle song was “Donuts make your brown eyes blue.”
