La neve in città non ha niente di poetico. Dopo il primo candore diventa un piciopacio più pericoloso delle sabbie mobili.

A me la neve piace solo in cartolina.

Sarà che ho sempre freddo, e per vestirmi a cipolla non faccio salti di felicità …  Sarà che non ci trovo nulla di bello nel tirare e ricevere  palle di ghiaccio in faccia …
Io e la neve non andiamo d’accordo per niente. Mi sembra di sentire il freddo dentro il corpo e puoi coprirti quanto vuoi: RESTA LỈ.

E che dire dei limiti che comporta?
Se non hai le catene nelle ruote non puoi uscire, e anche se esci devi guidare con la massima attenzione.
E poi chiudono le scuole, il che significa che vedi gironzolare adolescenti giulivi, spensierati e spacconi che fanno pupazzi di neve per hobby …
Per non parlare dello scivolone sempre dietro l’angolo. Per come sono io corro l’alto rischio di cadere davanti ad una platea di gente.
Gli autobus si fermano e te ne devi fare una ragione, perché con la neve non partiranno mai. Non mi sono mica dimentica di quando dovevo dare l’esame e non sono potuta andare perché stava nevicando!

Ogni inverno qui da me nevica, e quasi sempre capita nei momenti inopportuni. Si potrebbe anche chiamare sfiga, lo so, MA ANCHE NO.

Se arriverà la neve anche quest’anno spero di avere l’influenza.

Dear Gaming Gods please can we have………

Over the years (Too many now, unfortunately.) since we have been gaming we have seen many great games come and go. Whether it was a game that never got a sequel, or in some cases, a sequel that never lived up to the original or a franchise that deserves to be raised from the ashes of gaming history with a full re-boot.

It seems that the movie industry is keen to breathe new life into long dead franchises so why not games? Here is our run-down of the G4A wish list.

Elite!

Yes we know! Every games journalist worth their salt, or at least those old enough to remember this classic, have been hankering for a return of the space based trading classic. Originally created for the BBC Micro by programming team David Braben and Ian Bell Elite took the gaming world by storm.

With it’s open-ended gameplay and a massive 8 galaxies featuring 256 planets, Elite to this day remains a shinning example of what can be achieved with innovative programming.

Elite’s influence has rippled through the gaming galaxy ever since with a multitude of games borrowing the concept and trying to create that ‘Elite-type’ experience. Non have really managed to recreate the original though.

Elite has had two official sequels, Frontier and Frontier: First Encounters, both of which were full of bugs and never captured the feeling of the original or the imagination of the audience.

The good news is that Braben’s development studio ‘Frontier Developments’ have had an official sequel ‘Elite 4′ in the pipeline since 1998. The latest news is that the studio will begin full-scale work once their title ‘The Outsider’ is released. I am going to try to get some more information from the studio if I can – watch this space!

Destruction Derby

One of the PS1’s launch titles (Also launched on Sega Saturn and PC) Psygnosis’ Destruction Derby was a joyful jaunt of a driving game whereby you got to smash the crap out of your opponents cars.

Developed by Reflections, who later went on to write the driver series, this smash and crash title was one of the first to show what this new generation of arcade quality home gaming consoles were really capable of.

Its 3D graphics and unique gameplay model made Destruction Derby an instant classic. Despite a wave of sequels none of the following titles lived up to the originals, simple gameplay mechanics and course design. Recently there have been a few attempts at a similar theme, most notably Begbear Entertainments Flatout series.

The original Destruction Derby is available for download for PS3 and PSP.

The Last Ninja

One of, if not the biggest titles on the C64 was System 3’s The Last Ninja. An isometric fighting puzzler that redefined what people would come to expect from fighting games.

Blending gameplay styles of puzzles, platform and fighting games, The Last Ninja was a massive hit winning tons of awards and critical acclaim. The game itself spawned 3 sequels, Last Ninja’s 2 &  3 as well as The last Ninja: Remix.

The Last Ninja 2 came in a box with a mask, scroll and a rubber shuriken, that was hard enough to stick in my bedroom door. Nice!

In the  late 90’s rumours and screen shots of a fully fledged update of The Last Ninja series began to arise, and in 2003 we saw screen shots of the first level of The Last Ninja: The Return. Scheduled for a 2004 release the game even previewed at E3 yet was cancelled due to being “Simply not good enough” according to System 3 CEO Mark Cale. Heaven forbid they should just try to make it good eh?

MechAssault

The original MechAssault introduced me to the wonders of online play. A team based tear up in giant robots that systematically destroy entire cityscapes as the game unfolds.

Produced by Day 1 Studios and released by Microsoft on the original Xbox. MechAssualt’s single player game was, at best not much better than average but online the game blossomed into, in many peoples opinion, one of the best to date. The game really was one of the reasons that Xbox Live truly took off featuring some of the best pyrotechnics of any game up to that point.

A sequel MechAssault 2: Lone Wolf came a couple of years later and added the ability to leave your Mech and run around on foot. As with many such sequels the developers tried to shoehorn in too many new ideas without truly understanding their audience.

What we all wanted was an updated and polished version of the first game, with better graphics and new Mechs. It is what we still want! Forget leaving the mech when it is exploding, all we want are massive multi-player arenas with destructible buildings and giant Mechs that pack enough firepower to down the deathstar!

Imagine MechAssault rebooted for the Xbox 360? A stripped down game that looks great and allows us to kick shiny metal ass all day long!

Shenmue

It is as predictable as the sun coming up, but love it or hate it Shenmue was always going to be in this list.

Developed by Sega-AM2 and produced and directed by the legendary Yu Suzuki Shenmue was the first killer app for Sega’s ill-fated Dreamcast.

You follow the life of a young Ryo Hazuki who is out on a mission of vengeance for Lan Di the man who killed his father. The game centres around you having to talk to people, learn Martial Arts, fight and also get jobs to obtain money.

Shenmue’s open world was unlike anything seen before and was a truly immersive experience. Despite the game obtaining a massive cult following and a sequel that appeared towards the end of the Dreamcasts  life (Later it made the jump to the Xbox.) The decision was made to end the series on a rather annoying cliffhanger after the second game.

We all want to know how the story finished and we would dearly love to see Shenmue 3 on one of the Next Gen consoles. If it was packaged with the first two games so new-comers could pick up the story I still believe it would see by the bucket-load, come on Sega, “Do you know anywhere where I might find some sailors?”

Cannon Fodder

Sensible software were once the best developers working in the industry, according to us anyway. we thought long and hard about which games of theirs we would like to see back and whilst a full update of Sensible World Of Soccer would be cool we plumped for Cannon Fodder.

Originally released on the Amiga and later ported to the Megadrive, Cannon Fodder was an isometric war sim where you lead a small group of soldiers on various missions. Featuring what is still to this day probably the best theme song on any game the tagline “War has never been so much fun.” ruffled a few feathers and the developers were forced to redesign the packaging to remove a poppy from the cover. Even though they offered to donate some of the takings to the poppy appeal.

A full update of Cannon Fodder would really work we feel as long as the humour was left in tact and for that John Hare would have to oversee development.

Another World

Yet another Amiga classic makes an appearance on our list. This time Another World, a side scrolling 2D platformer that really transported the player to…. well yes, Another World.

Written by Eric Chahi and published by Delphine Software it featured state of the art graphics and new gameplay elements that have now become standard, Another World really stood out from the crowd. It used cut-scenes and cinematic effects that were inspired by the Dragons Lair game but done with much surer footing of a great original work.

Eric Chahi did write a sequel called Heart of The Alien but it only ever saw the light of day on the Mega CD so pretty much nobody played it.

Delphine did allow many people to think that Flashback was Another World 2 and it sort of was, as it stole many of the original ideas of its predecessor. An updated 3D version of this game would be ace!

Oddworld

Created by Oddworld Inhabitants the Oddworld series was an ambitious idea to create games around a series of characters inside a complete universe.

The series started off as a 2D platformer called Abe’s Odyssee and was followed up by Abe’s Exodus. Both games followed the exploits of Abe, a lovable character, as he tried to stop his fellow Mudokon slaves from being turned into food. The games featured an innovative idea in Gamespeak where you could select certain phrases to use to interact with other characters in the game. Both games were pure bliss.

When the series went 3D it left Abe behind and introduce Munch in Munch’s Odyssee. This is where the series started to falter. Having set the standard and creating such a brilliant character as ,Munch was just a poor substitute and sales of Munch’s Odyssee suffered as a direct result.

The final game in the series was Strangers Wrath and what a fine game it was again. a 3D shooter that had some of the coolest weapons ever seen. The game earned critical acclaim but failed to capture the public’s imagination.

Poor sales figures convinced Oddworld Inhabitants that there creations future lay elsewhere and they now look to turn the universe into films or comics or something.

But to be honest the series suffered badly when they left Abe behind and a reboot featuring this brilliant character with all the humour that the series was famous for could well revive the world even if it is odd!

Black

Just before the end of the Xbox Criterion released Black. An awesome shooter that went some way to proving the giant black box was being put out to pasture before its time.

Black was FPS and a masterpiece in how to blow shit up. The game has some of the most frequent and largest explosions ever seen. It is loud, fast and crazy.

Black was criticised for its lack of depth but for the time it ran it was a joy to behold and when you consider the platform it was on then you understand the skill in Criterions development.

A sequel has been muted but with the developers milking the cash cow that is Burnout for all it is worth we are yet to see a return for this most underrated of shooters.

There are many others – I am sure Moonhead and Eddie will have their own opinions and they will be on
below.

  A little over a month ago the entertainment community collectively went “Huh?”  when it was announced that James Franco would be appearing a 2 month long story arc on of all things a Soap Opera.  “This must be a joke” and “It is for research” were thrown about fairly often as possible reasons why JF would have chosen to leave his ivory tower in Hollywood and walk amongst the commoners.  Because when you get right down to it that is how the industry chooses to view Daytime, as commoners.  Someone not worthy of their respect.  Someone to laugh at and mock.  Daytime is so low on the totem pole that some people are even quiet about the fact that they watch them at all because of the laughter that it might illict.  Granted not everybody has been negative in their response to the news, for the most part it has been a range from startling disbelief to a kind of way to go JF.  But still it got me to thinking why doesn’t Daytime earn more respect?

  Some say that soaps are just one long story that keeps replaying itself over and over again.  They say that each story line gets more outlandish than the one before.  Remember the Possesed by the Devil story on Days of Our Lives?  Or perhaps Dixie coming back from the dead for perhaps the millionth time on All My Children?  Plus we aren’t even going to get into the Who’s the daddy? story arcs or the myriad of romantic entaglements that are the crux of the daytime world.  So I guess I can see their point, to an extent.  Because honestly what makes Soaps any different from Primetime or even the very top of the Ivory Tower, Movies?  Can the naysayers honestly tell me that Primetime doesn’t have outlandish storylines?  Can they honestly say that shows like Grey’s Anatomy or Gossip Girl are more respectable for their romatic entanglements than say The Bold & The Beautiful?  Or shows like Fringe and The X-Files are more grounded in reality than say no longer on the air, Passions?  Or why The Sopranos deserves more respect than General Hospital?  The truth is they can’t say any of that because the only differences Primetime and Daytime have are the amount of money the networks are willing to spend on them and and one runs one night a week and gets up to a 3 month hiatus and the other is on 5 days a week and has no hiatus.  And no being blacked out for two weeks, holidays, and weekends do not count. 

   Or it could possibly be the fact that only second rate actors are on Daytime, while all the “real” actors are on Primtime?  Oh wait a minute that can’t be true because Daytime is proud to be one of the few venues that has churned out some of the best actors of the past couple of generations.  What other venue can honestly say that?   But despite that fact Daytime is still considered to be either the place where younger actors get their feet wet or older actors go when they have no other options.  Because as we all know Primetime has no bad actors.  Hey I know how about anyone who feels that Daytime is the blackhole for talent I dare you to go up to Betty White and tell her she doesn’t have any other options or tell Bradford Anderson that GH will be his last stop.  Oh wait a minute I have an even better dare for you.  I dare you to go up to Jennifer Aniston and tell her that the man who plays Victor Kiriakis on DOOL is a bad actor.  Go ahead we will wait because I am sure those of us who are fans of Daytime and those of us who work tirelessly to bring it to fruition could use a good laugh at your judgemental expense.

You know what nevermind Daytime doesn’t need your respect nor do we want it.

I had mentioned when talking about Guiding Light’s cancellation that another Proctor and Gamble’s soap opera, Another World, had been revived 10 years after its cancellation as a text based only soap, written by professional soap writers. Well, I was never a AW fan so I hadn’t kept up on it, but I wanted to share the site once I found it again for those who were.

Quanto è bello prendersi cura di se stessi. Non curarsi equivale a rassegnarsi al tempo che passa.

… che poi tenere a te non significa mirare alla perfezione, anzi ….

Io altaleno periodi in cui esco senza un filo di trucco. Qualsiasi occasione è un invito alla pigrizia, e anche il mascare mi sembra esagerato.   Non che me lo possa permettere, però mi piace così.  Assecondo sempre i miei desideri.

Altri periodi mi piace stare sempre truccata, sfumata, colorata.

Ma io non miro alla perfezione. Mi piace essere curata nei particolari, anche se esco senza trucco … anche se sono vestita senza impegno. I capelli però sono sempre in ordine, e per me è questo ciò che conta. Venerdì scorso ho passato tutta la mattinata dal parrucchiere. Mi sono sentita COCCOLATA e adulata, e questa sensazione mi ha fatto stare bene.

Il parrucchiere è un toccasana di buonumore. E cambiare look è uno dei miei piaceri preferiti.

Tagliare, sfilare, CAMBIARE. E’ bellissimo. Mi fa sentire diversa.

Wouldn’t it be great is we could see full classic episodes of Guiding Light online? Telenext Media, which owns GL, is putting episodes from 2007-2008 online at both Youtube and Hulu.com.

But many of us would like to go back to the 1980s. Remember the 1980s on Guiding Light? Couples like Quint and Nola, Ed and Maureen, Josh and Reva, and Phillip and Beth first got together. The Bauers, the Reardons, the Lewises, the Chamberlains, the Spauldings, and the Marlers were on the front burner.  Remember the Four Musketeers’ Prom Night,  Quint’s house on Thornway Road, Nola’s movie fantasies? The days when Ed, Maureen, Bert, Hillary Bauer, Justin Marler and Kelly Nelson walked the halls of Cedars? When Alan Spaulding brought Reva Shayne to town to break up Billy Lewis and Vanessa Chamberlain, and Reva wound up with Josh Lewis instead? When Alexandra Spaulding came to town, and Lujack was revealed to be her long-lost son, and then India followed her from Europe?

Classic episodes of Another World, another TeleNext Media/P&G property, from 1991 and 1992 are currently being posted online. When SoapNet, which had been airing Another World, yanked it from their schedule, fan outcry was great. And after campaigning via months of e-mail and postcards for the return of Another World, right where SoapNet left off. The fans’ patience and persistence was rewarded when Another World arrived at hulu.com and Youtube from where SoapNet left off! The Another World fans  did it, so why can’t the Guiding Light fans do it too? How awesome would it be to watch full classic episodes of GL online in a clean, crisp print? Because of Another World, a precedent exists. Because Guiding Light is the longest running show in TV history, so much more great footage exists!

But TeleNext Media and hulu won’t know that we want the 1980s Guiding Light unless we tell them, and we need to tell them repeatedly.

It’s simple to get involved: Write to TeleNext Media and hulu and tell them you want classic GL online.

Hopefully the fact that full channels dedicated to Guiding Light already exist on both Hulu and YouTube will be in our favor. I (FebWriter) was heavily involved in the successful Another World campaign and Brian T. Cahill really came through for us regarding Another World. It is my hope that a similar outcome will result for Guiding Light, but we have to work together to make that happen. The more people that let TeleNext Media and hulu know that we want classic Guiding Light episodes, the better it will be for us. When writing be firm, be polite, and be specific.

For example: “I am a huge fan of Guiding Light and would like to see classic episodes online. The 1980s was an unparalleled time of romance, intrigue, and family on Guiding Light. É successo così in fretta che non mi sono resa conto di aver vinto la selezione per un viaggio-studio.

Destinazione: BOLOGNA-FIRENZE.

Sono stati tre giorni intensi per tutto quello che dovevamo ascoltare, vedere, visitare.  Mi sono stancata, ma ho assaporato la felicità di partire all’improvviso.   I viaggi che ho fatto sono davvero pochi, e questo l’ho visto sempre come un limite. Per questo non avrei sprecato questa possibilità irripetibile.   Cosa importa se non c’è il tempo di organizzare?

Siamo partite in tre e abbiamo diviso le ore tra Bologna e Firenze.  Il CONVEGNO DEI COMUNICATORI PUBBLICI è stato interessante, ma un po’ deludente. Sono partita con la speranza di trovare uno spunto per la tesi, e di riuscire a prendere così tanti appunti da stancare la mano. Ho sentito discorsi triti e ritriti, e nessuna riflessione per la tesi. Il FESTIVAL DELLA CREATIVITÀ di Firenze, è stato una sorpresa. Non ho curiosato tra tutti i padiglioni, ma sono rimasta colpita dall’arte e dalle idee rappresentate.

Nel mio mini-viaggio sono riuscita a visitare qualcosa delle due città. Mi sono piaciute entrambe, e per motivi opposti, e avrei voluto prolungare la permanenza a Firenze, perché me ne sono innamorata.

Questi giorni li sto ancora assaporando, pur se frettolosi sono stati pieni di tutto.
Svegliarmi dal torpore universitario mi renderebbe questi mesi pre-laurea migliori. Eh eh …

Assalamu alaikum, well, I’m going to let the perverbial cat out of the bag once again, and divulge to my readers that not only do I listen to music, I also watch TV too, and what’s worse, I watch soap operas on TV, no less! Well, actually, it’s just dwindled down to one soap opera now, The Young and the Restless. But given how crazy the story lines have become, or rather, one story line in particular, I may not be watching much longer. And before I continue, there’s an ongoing spoiler alert for at least the remainder of this post.

The story line involves the characters of Ashley Abbott and Sharon Collins Newman, Ashley was pregnant by Victor Newman, they later married, and I guess somewhere in there, she was pregnant but lost the baby but Victor’s grown up son Adam, who we never saw much of during his childhood but who popped up as an adult during and shortly after the death of his mom (who used to be one of Victor’s wives), has somehow convinced her, with the help of some Dr. Taylor, that she is not only pregnant but as of Friday’s, 10/02/2009, episode, has given birth to a baby girl. Now at the same time, Sharon was pregnant with Victor’s son Nicholas’s baby, they used to be married but are not anymore, and they had, well, a trist, and that’s how she got pregnant, although I think Nick and Jack Abbott (Sharon’s former husband too) are the only ones who know that Nick is the father because they don’t want to tell Nick’s current wife Phyllis, so most people think that Sharon’s baby is Jack’s.

OK, so somehow Sharon and Ashley ended up in the same mental institution, Ashley because she had been driven crazy by Adam’s antics of the past few months, i.e., trying to make Ashley think that she was seeing the ghost of another one of former Victor’s wives Sabrina (she died in a car crash I think), and Sharon was in the mental ward because, I can’t remember now, something about stealing things and not remembering or realizing that she had taken them or something.

Anyway, so Sharon goes into labor, has her baby, and Adam takes it, Dr. Taylor makes Sharon think her baby has died while they give the baby to Ashley, who, well, really never had a baby because most of the time of her “pregnancy”, she was never really Pregnant in the first place. Yet, for some reason, no one has seemed to figure this out yet, or figure out that Adam and Dr. Taylor has been doing all of this all along.

So anyway, it’s the whole baby-switching thing that really has me riled! Sharon already lost another child, Cassie, a few years ago. And a lot of us want to see Nick and Sharon back together again anyway, I never liked Nick with Phyllis anyway.

However, this whole Adam/ashley/Victor/Sharon, etc., storyline just seems so totally stupid and over the top. The last time I stopped watching a soap because of a stupid storyline was when Marlena on Days of Our Lives was possessed by a demon or the devil, and that storyline went on for like years it seemed. And that was a show I watched for years! Well, until that storyline and I just got bored with it and at the same time had discovered The Young and the Restless.

And I’d always liked that show, as, well, as soap operas went, it was pretty realistic, and I have to say that they had the best portrayal of a blind character, in Hope Newman, that I think I’ve ever seen. I’m not sure if Y&R is having budgetary issues (as rumors are circulating that the actor who plays Victor Newman’s contract is going to end, it’s not going to be renewed and thus he will be off the show) or if the writers are just crap, but in any case, as upset as I am with the direction the show has taken, I’d sure hate to see it go the way of Guiding Light.

But I’m sure someone is going to come and tell me, and I know this, that that show is haram and I know it is, or at least many aspects of it are. I’ve wrestled with watching it, actually not watching it during Ramadan (I know that sounds hypocritical doesn’t it), and I think this is why I never saw this particular baby-switching storyline coming. And I was so looking forward to the birth of Sharon’s baby and for someone discovering that Ashley wasn’t pregnant, and to find out all of the dirty tricks Adam’s been up to (faking blindness to be just one of them).

*sigh*

I don’t even know why I watch this show anyway! I hate to admit it, I mean, who wants to admit to watching soap operas? But it kind of gives, or gave, me an escape from reality. I guess that’s the best way to explain it. I actually, growing up, used to watch the NBC soaps, or at least Days of Our Lives and Another World, because that’s what my mom and aunts watched, though I’m not sure if my aunts still watch them, I know my mom doesn’t anymore. And I just happened to be TV surfing one day and came across The Young and the Restless, because I just wanted to see what the other soaps were doing/talking about.

So anyway, as I remarked to my husband the other night, perhaps this awful storyline will finally make me give up soap-watching for good, who knows.

Uscire comporta dei rischi, e in questi giorni sto uscendo più del solito.

E’ un bel periodo questo. Le occasioni si presentano senza chiederle, e mi sembra quasi di poter dire che la ruota gira dalla mia parte. (MAI cantare vittoria).

Io credo ci siano momenti migliori di altri, MOMENTI in cui ti senti leggera e QUASI FELICE.  Ci sono anche i MOMENTI DI SPOSSATEZZA e stress.

… e non hai tempo per far nulla, e forse non ne avresti nemmeno voglia.

E i MOMENTI DI APATIA? mi stanca anche solo scriverne. Poi ci sono i MOMENTI DI TRISTEZZA, e non a caso li ho lasciati per ultimo. In quegli attimi tutto è pesante, e non hai la forza nemmeno di piangere.  Sei delusa di te stessa, e della vita.  E non reagisci perchè pensi di meritare quella tristezza incessabile.  Sei incompresa e spesso irascibile, e la cosa più normale  è pensare che da quella situazione NON ne uscirai mai.

In questi mesi è un periodo di spensieratezza e indifferenza. Mi sento scivolare le malelingue e non mi accorgo di nulla se non di chi mi ama. Trascorro le giornate a fare quello che mi piace fare, e coltivo le mie amicizie e i miei amori.  Leggo ogni secondo libero, e mi vedo sorridere senza un motivo preciso.

Poi esco più del solito. Il mio guscio “no-sense” l’ho messo da parte per qualche tempo,  e trovo sia la cosa più naturale per questo momento.

E così esco, ma uscire comporta dei rischi. Incontri inaspettati, non voluti. Indifferenza istantanea che mi lascia comunque amarezza.  Eppure dovrei essere arrabbiata. Eppure un’amica dovrebbe trattarti bene, e non ferirti.  Ma queste sono solo parole, e non credo ne valga la pena.

Il fatto è che o cambio paese e mi trasferisco a breve, oppure più passa il tempo più selezionerò i saluti.
