Everything seems to be “going green” these days – from cars, to companies, to coffee. However, sometimes it can be hard to tell what that really means, especially when it comes to your current or future home. But let me tell you, Green building does not apply solely to new construction. In fact, increasing numbers of homeowners are working with their remodelers to incorporate green practices into their projects, such as efficient windows, appliances and plumbing fixtures, designs that minimize lumber and material waste, and materials recycling.

The National Green Building Standard provides in depth guidance for green remodeling and a basis for scoring green remodeling/renovation projects. The Green Scoring Tool now incorporates the remodeling and renovation areas within the Standard and makes scoring these projects even easier. By using a Certified Green Professional (CGP)™ on your next remodeling project, you can get your home certified to the new National Green Building Standard. The CGP remodelers in your town are building industry professionals that know the strategies for incorporating green building principles into homes, including an understanding that demonstrates reduced environmental impact and increased performance and health benefits.

Working collaboratively with a CGP you can explore the most effective ways to make your home more energy efficient, less costly to maintain, quieter, and healthier. With these features you can have your home certified to the new National Green Building Standard and when it’s time to sell you will be able to sell your home faster and at a higher premium. For more information on finding a CGP or on how the National Green Building Standard can improve the resale value of your home, please contact Jeff Hunt, Vice President of Brothers Strong at Jeff@BrothersStrong.com

The long wait is over. Ronin 0.3.0, code-named “big-push”, has finally been released. Da

The long wait is over. Ronin 0.3.0, code-named “big-push”, has finally been released.

DataMapper 0.10.0

Ronin was probably one of the first big Ruby apps to upgrade to DataMapper 0.10.0. As a result of this, we had to postpone the release of Ronin 0.3.0, until DataMapper 0.10.0 had finished it’s rigorous two month Q/A cycle.

Once DataMapper 0.10.0 had been released, the two months of Q/A and almost a complete rewrite of the code-base really showed itself. I think @dkubb, @dbussink, @snusnu, @xshay, @myabc, @rsim, @namelessjon, @knowtheory and everyone else who helped with 0.10.0 deserves applause for their hard work and dedication.

YARD

As of 0.3.0, Ronin has successfully moved to YARD based documentation. The new Ronin API docs can be found in the usual location. YARD really helped improve the detail of the Ronin API docs, allowing developers to specify method arguments, accepted object-types, yield arguments, possible exceptions and return-types.

Additionally, YARD handlers were added to Ronin that parsed and regenerated documentation for DataMapper properties/relations. These additional YARD handlers helped improve documentation coverage for Ronin models, such as Ronin::Arch or Ronin::Exploits::Exploit.

Ronin::UI::CommandLine

<kbd>Ronin::UI::CommandLine</kbd> was almost entirely refactored in 0.3.0. Ronin::UI::CommandLine::Command was rewritten to use Thor. Switching to Thor greatly simplified the ronin commands, making it easier to write new commands. A good example of this, is the source-code for the <kbd>install</kbd> command from before and after 0.3.0.

Another benefit to using Thor, albeit cosmetic, was being able to use Thor’s ANSI color-output. Normal output will now appear in green, warnings in yellow and error messages in red.

New convenience methods were also added to <kbd>Ronin::UI::CommandLine::Command</kbd> to help format and print various data: indent, print_title, print_array and print_hash.

Ronin::UI::Output

As of 0.3.0, <kbd>Ronin::UI::Diagnostics</kbd> and <kbd>Ronin::UI::Verbose</kbd> were replaced with the brand new Ronin::UI::Output module. <kbd>Ronin::UI::Output</kbd> is designed to delegate how output is handled. By default all output is sent to Ronin::UI::Output::Handler, which prints the output to the terminal. One can override the default output handler by using Ronin::UI::Output.handler=, to specify the new handler module; which must define <kbd>print_info</kbd>, <kbd>print_debug</kbd>, <kbd>print_warning</kbd> and <kbd>print_error</kbd> methods.

<kbd>Ronin::UI::Output</kbd> also provides the Helpers module, which can be included into any class and adds the print_info, print_debug, print_warning and print_error methods.

New Convenience Methods

New TCP and UDP networking methods were added to 0.3.0. Now one can easily create TCP/UDP servers using, Net.tcp_server, Net.tcp_server_session, Net.tcp_single_server, Net.udp_server and Net.udp_server_session.

Ronin::Network::HTTP::Proxy was also added to 0.3.0. The <kbd>Ronin::Network::HTTP::Proxy helps parse and represent HTTP proxy addresses, and is now used by Ronin::Network::HTTP.proxy and all <kbd>:proxy</kbd> options.

proxy = Network::HTTP::Proxy.parse('148.233.239.24:80')
# => #<Ronin::Network::HTTP::Proxy: 148.233.239.24:80>

The <kbd>Proxy</kbd> class can also be used to test a proxy.

proxy.valid?
# => true
proxy.lag
# => 0.003881

Ronin::Platform

The overlay.xsl file got a make-over in 0.3.0. <kbd>overlay.xsl</kbd> is a XML StyleSheet, which helps render ronin.xml files from Overlays into proper XHTML when they are viewed in a web-browser. Now <kbd>ronin.xml</kbd> files should appear more like a standard "About" web-page.

Reloading Overlays/Extensions while ronin is running became possible with the addition of Ronin::Platform.reload!. Now if an Extension is modified, one can simply call <kbd>Platform.reload!</kbd> and get the updated version.

Ronin Extensions gained convenience methods for defining reader/writer methods to instance variables: attr_reader, attr_writer and attr_accessor. They can be used in Ronin Extensions, just as one would use them in a class.

ronin_extension do

  attr_accessor :var
  attr_reader :result

  setup do
    @var = 5
    @result = nil
  end
  ...
end

Ronin Extensions also gained their own on-demand temp directory. When Ronin::Platform::Extension#tmp_dir is called, a temp directory specifically for the extension will be created within <kbd>~/.ronin/tmp/</kbd>, and the path of the new temp directory will be returned.

Upgrading

As always, the rubygem files for Ronin 0.3.0 are available on rubyforge.org. One can update Ronin using rubygems by simplying running:

$ gem update ronin

Likewise, one can also install Ronin using rubygems:

$ gem install ronin

Also, as of Ronin 0.3.0 all releases of Ronin will also be made available on gemcutter.org.

We thought [Kristofer's] Tech Tip about using figlet with scripts was kind of fun. It’s a throwback to the days of logging onto a BBS and being greeted by a vertically scrolling ASCII art image that had been meticulously hand crafted (although a lot of the coolest stuff was actually ANSI art). No hand crafting here, just feed (or pipe) your text to figlet and it outputs the message in ASCII style letters.

When we went to try install this in Ubuntu, the toilet package was suggested. This one’s worth checking out too. It works in much the same way as figlet but uses extended characters and has a lot more color and font settings:

Give these packages a try and make character art cool again!

Mr. Zalatar has assisted a number of clients in implementing their B2B EDI integration initiatives.

Mr. Zalatar has assisted a number of clients in implementing their B2B EDI integration initiatives. The following discusses one of these implementations. It presents a brief background on the requirements and challenges, the solutions and some insights along the way. It also describes his role or roles in the project as well as the technology and tools employed.

Background

Lifescan, Inc., a glucose meter and strip manufacturer, had been working with a third-party EDI provider (GXS) to handle all their EDI 856 (Advance Ship Notice) transmissions. After acquiring webMethods, the company decided to move all their EDI 856 trading partnerships in house. The client’s long-term objective was to have all their EDI documents supported on this platform and the 856 would be one of them. At that time, the client was sending the ASN data to the third-party EDI vendor in a flat file format via FTP. The vendor in turn took care of the translations of these ASNs into EDI 856 files and the eventual transmission of the documents to the company’s various trading partners.

Requirements

The client needed a solution that would enable them to transport all their EDI trading partners receiving 856 from the third-party vendor to webMethods. Some of these trading partners included McKesson, RiteAid, Walgreens and CVS. The client wanted to implement all functionalities being provided by the third-party vendor in webMethods. The solution had to interface with JD Edwards, the company’s ERP, which generates the ASN data feed as well as labels. Consequently, webMethods had to be configured to communicate via EDIINT AS2 as well as with Sterling VAN which was still being used by some trading partners. Lastly, the client wanted to minimize the number of maps that have to be developed or better yet to consolidate the maps to make future maintenance and support manageable. Previously the way the client implemented EDI 856 integrations was to ask for the trading partners’ 856 specifications and follow it to the letter. This resulted in a number of disparate maps, some with only token differences that were being maintained by the third-party vendor. Most of these necessitated application changes on the client’s side to accommodate the varying customer requirements.

Challenges

Defining and establishing a standard EDI 856 offering. In order to minimize the number of maps to be developed in webMethods as well as to make future support manageable, a couple of challenges have to be overcome. First, there were already existing trading partners receiving 856s. Second, how to define a comprehensive 856 offering that would satisfy majority of future trading partners.

The first 856 integration in webMethods. This would be the initial implementation of an EDI 856 integration in the client’s webMethods platform. There were no existing ASN processes, interfaces, and 856 maps from which this intended integration could be built upon.

Timeframe. Due to the impending contract expiration between the client and the third-party vendor, this project was given a specific timeframe to be completed. The client didn’t want to renew the contract and obviously didn’t want a situation where they become incapable of sending 856s to their customers.

Solutions

The team, which was composed of a couple of employees and a couple of consultants including Mr. Zalatar, started off by putting together a project plan. With his many years of experience implementing EDI integrations, Mr. Zalatar was depended upon to identify most if not all the required tasks from the analysis phase down to post-production support. He assisted in determining tasks that can be accomplished in parallel as well as those that depend on others while providing reasonable estimates for each task etc.

The team then studied and analyzed the 856 transactions being sent to existing trading partners. A comparison matrix was created to show what data elements were being used by all and those that were only being used by some. Data elements that were must-have or required by each partner were noted down as well as those that weren’t. From this the team came up with a draft of a generic 856 guidelines factoring in the most commonly used data elements perusing the most commonly used structure of an 856 which is the SOTI- Shipment, Order, Tare and Item. The plan was for this guidelines or specifications be furnished to prospective trading partners going forward as Lifescan’s standard 856 offering. For those trading partners that can readily receive and process this layout, turning them on in production would be a snap saving the client a lot of valuable time and resources. Everyone was also aware that in real world there would be trading partners who have some customized requirements. For these the client would only develop customized segment mappings in webMethods without developing new set of 856 maps. This approach would also be used in developing the maps for the existing trading partners. With the standard 856 guidelines, the team solved the client’s requirement to make future 856 implementations convenient and support reasonable.

Mr. Zalatar took the lead in proposing and developing the EDI 856 framework, leveraging the various webMethods modules such as Trading Networks, Developer, Integration Server, Broker, Monitor, JDBC Adapter and of course EDI. Extra considerations were placed on making the framework as well as the map flexible accommodate future 856 trading partners. The first development task was to code the standard 856 maps which would be based on the just created standard 856 offerings. The development of the maps followed webMethods’ best practice and recommendations. User-defined services and functions that were generic and reusable were placed in a common folder. Maps were placed in a hierarchical folder structure (ie. X12->V4010->T856->standardMap856; X12->V5010->T856->standardMap856). Each EDI segment was encapsulated in each own flow service. Hard-coding of values inside the service were minimized if not totally eliminated. These segment mapping services were then used to build the actual maps. For those trading partners that had customized requirement not supported in the standard map, separate segment mapping services were coded for them. Logics were then added in the standard map to call the standard segment mappings or the customized mappings based on parameters configured for each trading partner in Trading Network’s Agreements. This approach was part of the overall framework design geared towards making everything convenient to on-board new EDI customers. It also enabled reuse of existing services while limiting the amount of maps that need to be developed and eventually maintained.

After the development was completed, each map was tested and validated using test data from production. Then each existing trading partner was contacted for an end-to-end testing. The team worked with the business and application team to come up with real-world data for testing. Communication link via EDIINT AS2 was established to and from enabled customers. Test 856s were then transmitted as well as label printouts for those customers requiring them. After receiving approvals from the customers, the client signed-off on the testing and a go-live date was set. The team solicited all necessary approvals and filled out all the required deployment documents for migration. When the migration was completed, the team collated and finalized all the documentations written through out the course of the project and submitted them to the client.

Results

The successful migration of the project allowed the client to bring the EDI 856 integrations in-house. It gave them a solid EDI framework in webMethods from which all future 856 partnerships can be implemented on. It freed them up from being dependent on the third-party vendor. Utilizing the various modules in webMethods allowed the team to incorporate all the functionalities and features the client was getting from the third-party vendor’s software. The project was successfully delivered ahead of time and well before the contract with third-party vendor expired. Even though the team was composed of personnel from different backgrounds and specializations, the team was able to pull through via effective communication, management support, teamwork and always focusing on the ultimate goal.

WTF. (Temat oczywiście natychmiast zamknięto, a torka na TT skasowano. Oh, the irony.)

To głupi żart.

EDIT: Ojej, ktoś wrzucił na TT torka [Chuj w Dupę Dimowi] Legend of Duo 01 – 06 [pl-sub]. Niestety, ponieważ tak bardzo niektórym ciążył torrent [OintomałypenisThara] i skasowano go z TT, nie da się teraz porównać submitter hash, co by może rzuciło trochę światła na sprawę i uploadera torków. OH, THE IRONY.

July 31, 2009

“Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) HIBC for Product Identification has been given final approval by the American National Standards Institute ( ANSI). Also known as ANSI/HIBC 4.0, the new standard was developed by the Health Industry Business Communications Council (HIBCC), an accredited global standards development organization that was founded in 1983 to promote patient safety by creating industry-supported non-proprietary standards for healthcare product identification.

The RFID standard was already in early development phases when in June, 2008; the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published the results of a study of electromagnetic interference (EMI) with medical equipment and devices in critical care environments from RFID technologies. The study concluded that ultra high frequency (UHF) from RFID and UHF interfered with medical devices in 63% of the tests conducted.”

Raffaele Morelli è medico, psichiatra e psicoterapeuta.

I think I’ve found a new religion. Stuff that’s neat: Form Art: like an advanced version

I think I’ve found a new religion.

Stuff that’s neat:

Form Art: like an advanced version of ASCII art,[☟] but with buttons and stuff instead of letters and stuff. The new formalism.[☟]

Childhood Games: ah, BASIC. I think I’m in love with this guy. This… Eugenio Tisselli, yes. I love that we both grew up programming BASIC games and that he was doing it before I was born, while BASIC was already far beyond retro status by the time I got into it. Though Eugenio’s and my own emotive connections with BASIC have been compiled from different sources, we share a common kernel of nostalgia (ha: I just made awful computer puns [two of them]). Wherever Eugenio is now, I shall find and marry him in a DOS-based MUD, and we’ll make sweet love like “*whispers*can u feel me upgrading yr hardware?*winks*”

WebWaste: an “internet rubbish dump.” see artsy visualizations of files people have thrown out, including pictures & videos. you can anonymously dump your files onto the site if you download their “dustman” application.

DataDada: a program that makes movies based on your hard disk data. The audio output is far from easy listening; some doctors might warn those with hypertension to stay away. But anyway, that’s why we have volume controls. You can get some rad video clips from this. It runs on several different platforms.

Project Blinkenlights: um, just awesome. Giant digital animations displayed on side of building. I dreamt about it.

smaster: described as the “ultimate low-fi [sic] rot13 text editor”… Not sure if anyone else who reads my blog will think that sounds awesome, but I do! Disappointingly, I haven’t been able to use it on my Mac (I got it to run in WINE, but text input didn’t work).

runme.org: huge repository of coolness

soundtoys.net: more coolness. Lots of strange, free audio & multimedia software. Much of it’s Flash-based, which is kind of a turn-off for me (I want my internet and my other toys separate)—but I found that many of the featured artists’ homepages were filled with even more strange, free, and downloadable audio & multimedia software. I’ve tried some of it, and yes, most of it was actually worth downloading. So far, my favorites are ixiQuarks (for real-time audio manipulation) and videoBat (for making video fly around—oddly enough, I’d been looking all over the place for a video editing program that’d do exactly that), both from ixi. I’m also pretty fond of the 8-bit music-maker Cbasicore64 by this fellow named bertùf. And although I haven’t actually played with this one, there’s no way I could leave a self-destructing Gameboy emulator off of my cool list.

Peckham outlines in this video report that “communicating safety freshly, and in a new and better way, is something that’s needed in our workforce.”
Peckham also is president of Clarion Safety Systems, the Pennsylvania company that’s leading the way in the development of ‘visual safety systems’ tailored to each company’s needs. The new approaches to signage, labeling and safety markings in general set the bar for best practices today, he said.

The International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA) has released an updated standard focusing on minimum requirements for workplace first aid kits, after being approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

ANSI/ISEA Z308.1-2009 American National Standard – a revision to the 2003 edition, was prepared by members of ISEA’s Industrial First Aid Group, along with leading industry stakeholders.

Think Safe Inc was included in the preparation process as one of the industry stakeholders (as can be seen listed in the Foreword of the ISEA standard document).

“It’s an honor to be a part of the review team responsible for setting new standards in first aid. That is, after all, one of the main goals for Think Safe – innovating first aid technology and setting new standards in the field,” Paula Wickham (CEO/President of Think Safe).

Updates include the designation of new kit types, expansion of the required supply list to include a first aid guide and a redesign of the product label to draw attention to the fact that each workplace is unique and therefore may necessitate the availability of additional first aid supplies.

All Think Safe first aid kits exceed ANSI/ISEA standards and vary in size and purpose. Check out the First Aid Kits here!

Cari Giornalisti,

Terenzio Fusco ( Presidente ANSI – Bari).
