Duo parisien / Pop / 12/10/2009

Mondanitude… Minuit, les molosses du Baron, où j’avais pourtant juré de ne pas remettre les pieds deux ans auparavant, me laissent entrer alors que mon nom n’est pas sur la liste (je ne sais pas pourquoi ni comment j’ai eu droit à cette faveur… mais tant mieux) et le personnel se fend d’un bonjour avec sourire (maintenant c’est certain, ils m’ont confondue avec une autre). La faune locale est plus calme et moins exubérante qu’avant, c’est plutôt agréable. Oh, il y a toujours deux ou trois imbéciles pour se croire à un défilé de la fashion week, qui portent des horreurs en fourrure et doudoune avec complet à rayures en dessous, heureusement que le ridicule ne tue pas, il y aurait régulièrement des hécatombes ! Dans le public je retrouve les Chicros, probablement les musiciens pop les plus sympathiques de Paris avec Syd Matters, pas étonnant qu’ils soient amis. Cela dit, je trouve toujours qu’ils ne collent pas avec le lieu.

Olivier Marguerit et Laurie Lassalle prennent place devant leurs deux synthés Casio. Leur musique est simple et n’a rien de foncièrement original ou nouveau, comme attendu à l’écoute de l’EP. Mais il y a ce petit quelque chose de captivant, un sourire, un regard, deux accords, trois rythmiques qui font que l’ensemble tient vraiment la route. Les mélodies sont douces, les textes piquants, on passe un agréable moment, le public a d’ailleurs fini par être attentif. Par-dessus tout c’est une grande complicité qui ressort de ce vrai duo-couple, très à l’écoute l’un de l’autre (et vice et versa). Ils jouent quelques titres de leur Foreplay EP dont les délicieux My Girlfriend Is Better Than Yours et Before my Memory, mais aussi plusieurs nouveaux titres, la conception d’un album n’est donc pas à perdre de vue… tant mieux !

Je repars le concert terminé, sous les yeux un peu interloqués des videurs : Déjà ? Bah oui… Après deux heures, pas de mondanités merci, c’est mauvais pour la digestion :)

So I finally decided to try out Vampire Weekend’s debut self titled album after weeks of buzz both from word of mouth and across the blogospere. I finally caved when I saw them on Uncrate.

Sound wise they are partially orchestral (ala Polyphonic Spree), have vocals that resemble Kings of Leon-meets-The Fratellis and a hint of Foals in there too (possibly in the percussion department and frenetic guitar in the song A-Punk).

The problem with overhypeing something is that it often leads to its own detriment. An example of this in the film world was the new Indiana Jones movie, it wasn’t the quintessential ending to the series that was being promised. It was good, at best it was as good as one of the originals but it wasn’t anything amazing. I feel the same way about VW. Don’t get me wrong, I like some of there stuff, but I was expecting the next Apes & Androids or something based on the buzz. The thing about Apes & Androids is that they weren’t nearly as hyped in the beginning, possibly do to their very “distinct” sound and bizarre performances at gigs in NYC. A&A’s rise seemed more gradual and natural as opposed to VW which felt more forced. Leading to my conclusion of them having an image bigger than their sound, they seem… empty or like they are missing something.

But that’s not to say the band is bad. Not at all, I see a lot of potential. My favorite tracks from the album are Mansard Roof and M79. The first has a very interesting and fun beat. Seeming almost carribe in percussion at parts but then using more classic instruments throughout. M79 then has a surprising intro as the band uses a harpsichord and violins/violas. Again the use of these classical instruments in a new way is giving this band a distinct flavor that look forward to hearing more of in the future.

I’d like to know what you guys think. Am I being too hard on them or is there weight to my argument? Please leave a comment with you thoughts and possibly other examples of overhype.

Leopard will open the Mac OS X floodgates (and embarass Microsoft) - nice thought, but not very realistic. The fact is, Apple will continue to eat away a Microsoft’s dominance, especially in certain segments of the market (primarily those who would not be running Windows anyway), but will not become the dominant desktop OS (and hence, will not destroy Microsoft) unless Apple stops being a radically proprietary, closed environment, and lets users buy the OS and run it on whatever hardware they want. Same battle Apple lost in the 80s – seems they never learn.This assumes, of course, that Apple wants to be an OS vendor – maybe they are not stupid, they just do not want to compete in that market.

This begins a series of posts on Fred’s Laws – basically a set of anti-rules on how not to develop software.

Over the past twenty-odd years, I have seen a lot of software projects crash and burn. Many have been doomed from the start, while many others died slow, painful deaths after hopeful beginnings. Some have finished, and the systems are in production, without ever having realized that the project was a failure. Others should have failed, but managed to struggle through due to the heroic efforts of one or more dedicated (and usually really smart) people.

I have also seen more than a few “failed” projects that were technical successes. We built really cool software. We were on time, on budget, and had good quality. They failed in some other aspect – usually they were business failures for one reason or another.

The environments in which these projects have died have been varied as well. Some tried to make it with no process at all. Some had lots and lots and lots (and lots and lots) of process. I have not seen a great deal of correlation between process and success (well, except that the process I pick for my projects is always successful ).

When I look back on these catastrophic projects, usually I can see where things went wrong. In fact, most of the time I could see where they were going wrong while it was happening, like watching a car crash in slow motion, but was frequently powerless to avoid the impact. More often than not (in fact, I would be willing to say always), the root cause was something completely avoidable (from a technical or project perspective). Never was it because we chose Windows over Linux (or vice versa), nor because of the programming language we chose, nor because what we set out to do was technically impossible.

As I have written Fred’s Laws (well, written them in my head, none of them are actually written yet!) it occurs to me that they all seem to be straight from the department of the bloody obvious. No rocket science here. If they are this obvious, why even write them down. Well, the reason is that, despite how really obvious all of this is, I watch projects not do them all the time. Most of the time, in fact.

So, stay tuned. I am going to try to post one law per day (or so) until I run out of ideas.

BTW, as a little footnote, I have been involved in a few successful projects along the way. It just always seems to be the ones that failed (and failed spectacularly) that stick out in my memory.

Tagesschau: Karlsruhe schränkt Rasterfahndung ein

Ein schwarzer Tag für dieses Land wenn das Grundgesetz für Politiker so wenig wert ist.

In den Zügen der Nord-Ostsee-Bahn wird neuerdings mit Plakaten Werbung gemacht, dass ab dem 1. Juni 2006 alle Nahverkehrszüge in Schleswig-Holstein per Gesetz rauchfrei sind. Vielleicht sollte ich doch langsam mal wieder versuchen aufzuhören, fahre doch recht häufig dort hoch

Dabei habe ich erst vor kurzem mitbekommen, dass die Züge der NOB im Raucherabteil doch Aschenbecher haben, nur sehr sehr gut versteckt.

Inspiriert von Dobschat werde ich nun auch mal in sporadischen Abständen die freitäglichen Fünf beantworten.

1. Schaust du regelmäßig TV Serien?

Regelmäßig eigentlich schon, allerdings weniger regelmäßig eine bestimmte Serie. Oft zum einschlafen abends

2. Was macht für dich eine gute Fernsehserie aus?

Eine gute Serie sollte spannend sein und fesselnd sein. Am besten so, dass wenn man eine Folge gesehen hat sofort die nächste sehen will und sich darüber ärgert, dass man eine Woche warten muss.

3. Gibt es eine Serie, für die du alles stehen und liegen lässt?

Derzeit eigentlich nicht. Meistens bin ich sowieso viel zu verplant um immer rechtzeitig an die Serie zu denken. In letzter Zeit habe ich sehr häufig Monk (RTL) geschaut.

4. Und welche geht überhaupt nicht?

Eigentlich alles an Soaps und Telenovelas und was so in die Richtung geht. Besonders unbekannte Serien, die schon vor Start, extrem gepusht werden, hatten es im Nachhinein auch oft nötig. Nahezu das gesammte Programm von RTL II geht überhaupt nicht

5. Kaufst du Serienstaffeln auf DVD oder Video?

Nein, bisher nicht. Das liegt aber hauptsächlich daran, dass ich keinen DVD-Player besitze. Ansonsten würde ich schon ab un dzu mal zugreifen. Aber dann eher im Wühltisch bei den Angeboten. DVD-Sets für 30 und mehr Euro wären es mir nicht wert. Gerade bei Serien, vermute ich mal, macht das häufige Anschauen nicht so viel Spaß, wie ab und an mal ein guter Film.

Erstmal: Ein großes Sorry ein alle Leute, die täglich den "Ajax mit Xajax"-Artikel aufrufen. Ihr, die ihr hauptsächlich von Carsten Dobschat kommt (Danke für die Visits ). Ich glaube ihr wartet teilweise sicherlich auf Teil 2 und ich habe mir auch einiges an Zeit gelassen.

Der Beispiel-Code ist fertig, nur ein wenig Zeit fehlte mir um noch den Text für drumherum zu schreiben. Aber dafür habe ich mir morgen Zeit reserviert. Wenn nichts schief geht, dann bekommt ihr morgen garantiert den zweiten Teil

Nach einer kurzen Pause melde ich mich zurück! Unter anderem steht noch der zweite Teil von Ajax mit Xajax auf dem Fahrplan. Ausserdem bin ich nun mit einem Notebook bewaffnet und bereit für das mobile Bloggen  

Ja, es ist tatsächlich geschehen. Ich schreibe nun einen Blog. Der ein oder andere mag es schon gemerkt haben: Ich mag keine Blogs.

Ich teile nicht die Meinung, dass Blogs Meinungsmacher und die neue Art der Medien sind. Blogs sind das was sie sind: Meist nur einfach ein langweiliges Tagebuch.

Und wer liest die Blogs? Andere Blogger – auf der Suche nach Content. Üœber Milliarden von Trackbacks und Pingbacks und Hassenichtgesehenbacks schreiben alle ihren Senf über das gleiche Thema, wenn man überhaupt darüber hinweg kommt nur zu schreiben, dass man irgendwo anders ja was tolles gesehen hat.

So liest man “sich” ständig selbst und fühlt sich so wunderbar dazu gehörend.

Zugegeben, Blogs sind ganz nett, wenn man gerade nichts zu tun hat und einfach durchs Internet surft um irgendwas zu lesen. Als Langeweile-Killer teilweise sogar zu gebrauchen, wenn man nicht gerade das Xte Posting zum Thema “Ich war heute im Kino” oder “Auf Blog X hab ich was tolles gesehen” liest.

Offen bleibt jetzt nur die Frage: Warum schreibe ich nun auch noch einen Blog? Na, ganz einfach: Weil Ihr sie lest!

Le TENORI-ON de Yamaha ce n’est pas n’importe quoi,

c’est un nouvel instrument rien que ça !

Radio Campus Paris était invitée au lancement très attendu du TENORI-ON à la Maison de la Villette. Antoine et moi avons découvert la bestiole.

Il est 23h30 quand nous débarquons dans une Maison de la Villette à demie vide, où personne ne s’agglutine au bar, où le dj est bien seul, et le salon désert…

La fête commençait à 20h, nous avons raté ce qui semblait le plus intéressant de la soirée : l’open bar champagne-macarons-pop corn… Visiblement les gens n’étaient là que pour se rincer le gosier et le TENORI-ON n’était qu’un prétexte comme un autre…

Un détail m’agace immédiatement : un tiers des gens présents sont japonais, quel est l’intérêt d’inviter des japonais qui ont le TENERI-ON depuis longtemps pour le lancement français ? on les payent pour dire que c’est génial ??

Bon, on est pas du genre à se laisser faire alors on trouve un mode d’emploi et une machine libre pour s’essayer à “l’un des instruments de musique électronique le plus fascinant et époustouflant” (dixit l’invitation vert pomme en papier glacé pas recyclé).

205×205x32 mm pour 16×16 touches qui s’actionnent par simple pression des doigts. 6 modes dont les boucles à partir des formes que vous dessinez… je m’amuse donc pendant le set (désastreux) de Krikor avec le dernier exemplaire palpable puisque tous les autres ont été volés (qui à mon avis étaient partis du côté du Glaz’art…).

Je croise le zombie Etienne Jaumet (moitié de Zombie Zombie), inconfortablement installé sur un pouf, on papote deux minutes, il n’est pas convaincu par l’objet. Il faut dire que lui ne triture que des machines des années 70…

Le dj de drum’n'bass Subrider lui est enchanté par la machine, et aimerait ne pas bosser ce soir pour pouvoir jouer un peu plus avec la chose…

35 minutes plus tard, coup d’oeil à Antoine, on s’arrache ?

900 euros de technologie tape à l’oeil, c’est bon pour Justice ou Yelle (mais il faudrait déjà qu’elle apprenne à jouer de la musique et chanter…), on verra bien quel avenir aura le joujou,

Bjork en a acheté 5, si sa musique est encore pire à l’avenir, ben…
