AVG Free provides the bare necessities when it comes to security, but that should be enough for savvy Windows users. You’ll get a combined antivirus and antimalware engine, LinkScanner, and e-mail scanning. AVG Free 9 introduces a few new features, with improvements focused on performance, including claims of faster scan and boot times. One new feature is the Identity Theft Recovery Unit. Only for users in the United States, ITRU is a business partnership with Identity Guard which provides “consumer identity theft solutions,” accessible only from the AVG toolbar in Firefox and Internet Explorer.

The interface is nearly unchanged from the last version, and generally it’s easy to use. From the main window, though, you must double-click to get further information on any feature, whether virus scanning, LinkScanner settings, or updating. Streamlining this to one click would be helpful. A scheduling utility automates both scans and updates, while the upgrade ad at the screen’s bottom can be easily hidden using the Hide Notification button. When starting a scan, a slider makes it easy to jump between Slow, Automatic, and Fast scans: the faster the scan, the less comprehensive it is, so users should take advantage of the scan optimization that is recommended during installation to speed up that first scan. A progress meter for regular scans would’ve been useful, though. Should a virus create serious problems, AVG creates a rescue disk to scan your computer in MS-DOS mode.

The LinkScanner feature protects you from third-party code exploits before they load in your browser and for ranking search results. Annoyingly, when you install its optional toolbar, it commandeers your new-tab page, decidedly inappropriate behavior. The program doesn’t obviously tax your system when scanning or when running in the background, although CNET Labs determined that it will significantly slow down your system’s boot time, and slightly delay shutting down. AVG also detected some image files as threats, when two other scans decided they weren’t–we decided these were false positives. AVG might not be the fastest or the most effective free security option, but it still gets the job done and you’re better off with it.

Introduction

It will be the surprise enough to all Windows 7 user that at the initial stage it was impossible to and confusion to use Firewall since no any firewall is supported by this current version of Windows 7. Some of the firewalls, ZoneAlarm, Agnitum Outpost do not work yet and others also Comodo, ESET are not yet working properly in Windows 7.

However ESET is going to be a nice firewall in the future, therefore this firewall get 7/10 points.

But it will only let you install the firewall if you deinstall any other AntiVirus first.
Of course it makes sense to only install one antivirus to avoid conflicts, but I wouldn’t want to miss the best AntiVirus from Avira:

I did not know AVG before, but it is really one of the best security packages out there.

The firewall works very similar to ZoneAlarm and is asking for your permission if an unknown application tries to establish a connection.

You know what’s funny? mIRC was the first application that the  built-inWindows firewall tried to block as well. As far as I heard there shouldn’t be a problem running the Windows Firewall and another 3rdparty firewall simultaneously. However you should never run two 3rd party firewalls at the same time.
Overall this seems to a pretty nice solution for Windows 7. You can download the trial here.

I found a review on Avast anti-virus that drove me into typing up this post.

It includes features that I find quite useful, such as:

• Low memory usage
• Anti-spyware
• Anti-rootkit
• Network protection
• Simple and attractive user interface
• Real-time virus scanner
• Instant Messaging Shield

Unfortunately it does not come with an E-Mail scanner.

It is 100% free, but it only requires that you register for a product key.

I have installed Norton’s Internet Security software on a few computers, and in my experience, while Norton makes good software, Norton significantly reduces your PC’s performance. And then there’s the price of the software, and the subscription fees. If you’re tired of Norton or McAfee chewing up your computer’s resources (and your money), download AVG’s free anti-virus software. I also recommend educating yourself about rootkits and how they can hide various nefarious infections from your plain view and from solid anti-virus software. After reading about rootkits you may want to download something like IceSword (for advanced users), which is a free anti-rootkit program, or RootkitRevealer. Note: you should have Microsoft Automatic Updates turned on, and thus you should have Microsoft’s Malicious Software Removal Tool already installed.

Or, if you want to believe Apple and their claims that Mac users are relatively free from worries about computer infections, then buy a Mac, but be prepared to spend a lot more money, a ton of time learning a new operating system, and plenty of frustration on top of that.

I created this blog as a resource for current rootkit techniques and methodologies.  I have worked on an anti rootkit NT device driver for the past 14 months and have done a fair amount of research with my time.  I was lucky enough to do research as well as develop code.  This blog will be focusing on the overall general techniques used by both sides.  I am embarking on my l33t quest to develop a Windows 7 anti rootkit kernel level device driver and will be posting all my research and findings.  Until then I will be updating this page regularly with information specific to Windows XP and Server 2003.

The New Year is a time of reflection, and traditionally a time to consider changing one’s habits.

Our reliance upon computers and networks has exceeded our means to safely use and control them. Every computer user has some responsibility to make sure that their computer and use of the Internet does not introduce unknown and unwanted risks. By following these recommendations you will greatly reduce your risk to fraud, identity theft, and other risks related to Internet usage.

1. Change your passwords. Use strong passwords, which cannot be easily guessed by others, even those who know you. Do not share your password with any other person. If needed, store your passwords in a protected vault such as Password Safe or KeePass. I recommend you not use an online vault for password storage: if their security is compromised, so are your passwords.

2. Scan for Viruses and other malware. Configure your anti-virus software to scan your entire computer at least weekly. Make sure that your anti-virus software is checking for updates at least once per day. Also scan your computer with one of several online virus scanners at least once per month.

3. Block spam, and don’t open spam messages. The majority of spam (unwanted junk email) is related to fraud. Spam messages advertise fraudulent or misleading products, or lure you to websites that contain malware that will attempt to take over your computer (without your knowing it) and steal valuable information from you.

4. Get a firewall. If you use Windows, turn on the Windows Firewall. Ask your broadband service provider to upgrade your modem/router to one that contains a firewall (most newer modems / routers do have firewalls or other similar protection).

5. Remove spyware. Obtain a good anti-spyware program and use it to find and remove spyware from your computer.

6. Update your software. Obtain up-to-date copies of browsers and tools on your computer, as many older versions are no longer secure. This includes Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, Microsoft Office, OpenOffice, Java, and other programs.

7. Install security patches. If you are using Windows, turn on Automatic Updates, and configure it to automatically download and install security patches and updates.

8. Use separate accounts on shared computers. If more than one person uses your computer, set up separate accounts for each user. Make each user an ordinary user or power user, but never an administrator. Making each user an administrator makes the entire computer more vulnerable to malware (viruses, etc.).

9. Browse Safely. Change to Firefox and use the NoScript add-on. This is the only combination designed to block the new “clickjacking” vulnerability present in all other browsers. Also consider using Flashblock (works only with Firefox) if you want to control the use of Flash content in your browser.

10. Protect your wireless WiFi network. The old an still-common “WEP” protocol designed to encrypt your wireless traffic has been broken, and is no longer safe. Upgrade to WPA, even if it means buying a new wireless access point.

11. Back up your data. All kinds of bad things can happen, from mistakes to hardware failures. If you cannot afford to lose your data, then you need to copy it to a separate storage device. External hard drives and high capacity USB thumb drives cost well below US$100. You’ll be glad you did, sooner or later.

12. Encrypt your hard drive. Mostly important for laptop computers, but also important for desktop computers. The TrueCrypt tool is by far the most popular one available, and it’s free. If you don’t encrypt your data, then anyone who steals your computer can (and will) read all of your private data.

13. Check your credit reports. Fraud and identity theft can result in thieves opening new credit card and loan accounts in your name. They run up a balance and then never pay the bill, making that your problem instead. Consider a credit reporting service as well, which will alert you to inquiries and changes to your credit accounts, limits, and balances.
