It’s well known that some anti-virus programs are better than others at given times. Mostly because

It’s well known that some anti-virus programs are better than others at given times. Mostly because of how soon the signatures (tells that are used to identify malware) are updated. There is also a difference between their methods: some use signatures to identify the malware and some use an analysis of the behavior of the computer and the malware to identify anomalies and alert you when they’re found; and a few anti-virus programs use both methods of detection.

So, given that some are better than others at identifying malware, is it a good idea to run more than one anti-virus program for better protection? The answer is no…and maybe.

No, because two anti-virus programs running at the same time will identify each other as malware and try to destroy each other. Also because they will both use up lots of processing power; and try to use the same processes at the same time, bogging down or locking up your computer.

Anti-virus programs are designed to look for any program running on a computer that has administrator privileges (access to any and all files, programs, and processes on a computer), and is trying to control the computer. It so happens that anti-virus programs have these same characteristics so as to protect your computer.

Maybe, because there is one exception to this rule of not running two AV programs at once. That is the Malware Bytes Anti-Malware program. I have no relationship with Malware Bytes except as a customer. It seems to run well with other anti-virus programs already running. Perhaps it was designed to discern an anti-virus program from a virus or other malware.

Consequently, many folks use Malware Bytes to check for any malware that may exist on the computer (and missed by the running AV program) on an ad hoc basis, and not running it continually like the AV program.

Be very careful…it’s dangerous out there.

Computer viruses are deadly. They often spread without any apparent contact and can be a nuisance,

Computer viruses are deadly. They often spread without any apparent contact and can be a nuisance, or even worse, fatal to your computer. Individuals who create these viruses, estimated at 10-15 new ones a day, are the electronic version of terrorists. Their goal is to inflict havoc and destruction on as many people as possible by disabling, stealing, damaging, or destroying computer and information resources. Often, they have no specific target in mind, so no one is safe. If you access the internet, share files or your computer with others, or load anything from diskettes, CDs, or DVDs onto your computer, you are vulnerable to viruses.

Fortunately, there are good guys working just as hard as the hackers to develop cures for viruses as quickly as they send them off into cyberspace. And there are many things you can do to keep your computer from catching viruses in the first place.

Defining Viruses:

A virus is a small computer program that can copy and spread itself from one computer to another, with or without the help of the user. However, viruses typically do more than just be fruitful and multiply, which is bad enough in itself because it hogs system resources. Anything else viruses are programmed to do, from displaying annoying messages to destroying files, is called their payload. Often, they cannot deliver their payload until an unsuspecting user does something to make the virus execute its programmed function. This could be as simple as clicking on an innocent looking file attachment with the .exe (executable) extension.

Catching a Virus:

Most viruses are spread through e-mail attachments because it’s the easiest way to do it. Although Macintosh, Unix, and Linux systems can catch viruses, hackers are particularly keen on exploiting the security weaknesses in anything Microsoft, particularly Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express. Because of the popularity of this software, hackers get maximum bang for their buck, and they probably get some satisfaction from continually reminding Microsoft that being big doesn’t mean you’re perfect.

Solution 1: Anti-virus Software

Your first line of defense is to install anti-virus software. To be extra safe, also install firewall software, which is now included in some anti-virus packages. This software can scan all of your drives for viruses and neutralize them. Here are some features to consider when evaluating anti-virus software.

* Compatibility with your operating system – Make sure the software works with your system, particularly if you are using an older operating system like Windows 98.

* Firewall software – If it’s not included, find out if it’s available. If you must, buy it from another vendor.

* Automatic background protection – This means your software will constantly scan behind the scenes for infections and neutralize them as they appear. This provides some peace of mind.

* Automatic, frequent updates – Because new viruses appear every day, you’ll want regular updates. It’s even better if they occur automatically when you connect to the internet. If automatic updating isn’t included, you’ll have to check the vendor’s website and download updates yourself. This is vitally important, because you will not be protected from new viruses if your software is out of date.

* Disaster recovery - Software with a recovery utility to help you get your system back to normal after a virus attack is always good to have.

* ICSA certification – The International Computer Security Associatioin has standards for the detection rates of anti-virus software. Make sure your software has the ICSA certification.

* Technical support – It’s a good idea to select a package that offers free technical support, either online or through a toll-free number. If you’re ever felled by a virus, you may need it. Some anti-virus software vendors are Symantec Corporation (Norton AntiVirus), McAfee Corporation (McAfee VirusScan), Trend Micro Inc. (PC-cillin), and Zone Labs Inc. (Zone Alarm Suite).

Solution 2: The Virus Scan

If you receive a particularly juicy attachment that you’re dying to open, save it on your Windows desktop and run your anti-virus software on it first. To do this, click once gently on the file on your desktop … don’t actually open it … then right click and choose Scan with (Name of Anti-Virus Software) to activate a virus scan.

If it’s infected, your anti-virus software may neutralize it, or at least tell you the attachment is too dangerous to open. On the other hand, don’t feel guilty if the very thought of saving a potentially damaging file anywhere on your system is enough to quell your eagerness to open it and make you delete it immediately.

Solution 3: Delete first, ask questions later.

When in doubt about the origin of an e-mail, the best thing to do is delete it without previewing or opening it. However, some viruses, such as Klez, propagate by fishing in people’s address books and sending themselves from any contact they find to another random contact. You can spread a virus just by having people in your address book, even if you don’t actually e-mail them anything. They’ll receive it from someone else in your address book, which really makes life confusing. Because of the proliferation of porn on the internet, e-mail viruses often tempt victims by using sexual filenames, such as nudes.exe. Don’t fall for it.

Solution 4: Beware of virus hoaxes

E-mails warning you about viruses are almost always hoaxes. You may be tempted to believe them because you typically receive them from well-meaning friends, who received them from friends, etc. These e-mails themselves usually aren’t viruses, but some have actually fallen into the hands of hackers who loaded them with viruses and forwarded them merrily on their way as a sick joke.

The proliferation of e-mails about virus hoaxes can become nearly as bad as a real virus. Think about it, if you obey an e-mail that tells you to forward it to everyone in your address book, and they THEY do it, and this goes on long enough, you could bring the internet to its knees. If you ever want to verify a virus warning, your anti-virus vendor may have a list of hoaxes on it website. It’s in the business of providing the fixes, so it will know which viruses are real.

Solution 5: Beware of filename extensions

The extension of a filename is the three characters that come after the dot. Windows now defaults to hiding filename extensions, but it isn’t a good idea. Just being able to see a suspicious extension and deleting the file before opening it can save you from a virus infection.

To see filename extensions in all your directory listings, on the Windows XP desktop, click Start button | Control Panels | Folder Options | View Tab. Clear the check box for Hide extensions of known file types. Click Apply | OK. System files will still be hidden, but you’ll be able to see extensions for all the files you need to be concerned with. Viruses often live on files with these extensions – .vbs, .shs, .pif, .Ink – and they are almost never legitimately used for attachments.

Solution 6: Disable the .shs extension

One dangerous extension you can easily disable is .shs. Windows won’t recognize it and will alert you before attempting to open an .shs file. The extension is usually just used for “scrap object” files created in Word and Excell when you highlight text and drag it to the desktop for pasting into other documents. If this isn’t something you ever do, or you have Word and Excell 2000 or later, which allow you to have 12 items on the Clipboard, click the Start button | Control Panel | Folder Options | File Types tab. Under Registered file types, scroll down and highlight the SHS extension. Click Delete | Yes | Apply | OK.

Solution 7: Dealing with double extensions

When you turn on your extensions in Windows, you’ll be able to detect viruses that piggy-back themselves onto innocent looking files with a double extension, such as happybirthday.doc.exe. NEVER trust a file with a double extension – it goes against Nature.

Solution 8: Beware of unknown .exe files

A virus is a program that must be executed to do its dirty work, so it may have an .exe extension. Unfortunately, this is the same extension used by legitimate program files. So, don’t panic if you find files named Word.exe or Excel.exe on your system – they’re your Microsoft software. Just don’t EVER open any file with an .exe extension if you don’t know what the file’s purpose is.

Solution 9: Watch out for icons

Viruses in attachment files have been known to assume the shape of familiar looking icons of text or picture files, like the wolf in the hen house. If you recieve an unexpected attachment, don’t open it without first running it through your anti-virus software.

Solution 10: Don’t download from public newgroups

What better place for a hacker to lurk and stick his virus than in the middle of a crowd? Sooner or later, someone’s bound to download it and get the virus going. Don’t download files and programs from newsgroups or bulletin boards, or open attachments sent from strangers in chatrooms (“Let’s exchange pictures!”) without first scanning with your anti-virus software.

Solution 11: Avoid bootleg software

This may seem like a no brainer, but sometimes that tiny price tag on a popular but expensive package can be too good to resist. Resist it! Likewise, be careful about accepting application software from others. You don’t know where it’s been, and what may have started out as a perfectly clean package could have become infected during installation on someone else’s infected computer.

Solution 12: Protect macros in MS Word, Excel, and Powerpoint

A common type of virus uses macros. Macros are sets of stored commands that users can save as shortcuts to perform long functions in just a few keystrokes. A macro virus may perform such mischief as changing file types from text files or spreadsheets into templates, locking up keyboards, and deleting files. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint come with macro virus protection. To make sure yours is activated, open each application, then click Tools menu | Macro | Security. On the Security Level tab, make sure Medium or High is selected. Clcik OK. If you are already infected with a macro virus, you may find that the steps of this procedure are unavailable becasue the virus has disabled them. In that event, run a virus scan on your system to see if your anti-virus software can kill the virus.

Solution 13: Use passwords

If you share your computer, it’s a good idea to assign everyone a password. Passwords should be a combination of letters and numbers no less than eight characters long, and preferably nonsensical. Never write passwords and stick them anywhere near the computer. To assign passwords in Windows XP, click the Start button | Control Panel | User Accounts. Follow the prompts to assign/change passwords.

Solution 14: Update application software

Microsoft constantly issues patches for the security holes in its operating system and applications software. however, don’t be lulled into complacency if you have Windows Update automatically checking things for you. Update checks for patches to repair bugs in the operating system, not for security problems.

To get the latest security hotfixes (as Microsoft calls them), visit http://www.microsoft.com and look for hotfixes for all your Microsoft software, particularly Outlook and Outlook Express.

Microsoft also has a free downloadable package called Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) that scans your system for missing hotfixes. It works with Windows 2000 and XP Home and Professional only. It doesn’t support Windows 95, 98, or ME.

To download the MBSA, go to the TechNet section of the Microsoft Website. Be warned that the information is written in techie language, so you may find it daunting.

Last Words:

Now that you know some ways for avoiding and dealing with viruses, let’s wrap things up with some solution you’ve probably heard before but have ignored.

* Back up your files regularly - If a virus crashes your sytem, you’ll feel much better if you’ve got backup copies of all your important files. Make the backup copies on a media that’s separate from the computer, such as on diskettes, CDs, or zip disks. Scan them for viruses before you put them away to make sure they aren’t infected. If they are, they’ll do you no good if you ever have to use them because they will just transmit the virus right back onto your computer.

* Make a boot disk – Create an emergency boot diskette before you have a problem so you can start your computer after a serious security problem To make a boot diskette with Windows XP, put a blank floppy disk in the drive. Open My Computer, then right click the floppy drive. Click Format. Under Format options, click Create an MS-DOS startup disk. Click Start. Keep the disk in a safe place. With luck, you’ll never need to use it.

* Turn off you computer - DSL and cable connections that are “always on” may be convenient, but you should always turn off your computer when its not in use. Hackers can’t get to a machine that’s powered off.

Every year you may find yourself asking “What Virus Scan should I buy?” or “What Security suite should I get?” To answer this question you should know that you may not need to spend any money at all on security software. Why? The answer is that you may have a free one already without even knowing it.

To be more specific, if you use Windows XP SP2 or newer operating system you already have a built in firewall installed on your computer and it is free. In Windows Vista and newer operating system not only do you have a firewall but Microsoft even included a free built in malware scanner which can detect and remove adware and spyware. Microsoft also has a Malicious Software Removal tool which it releases every month to detect and remove any serious malicious code that may be on your computer. Recently Microsoft also has a Security Essentials Program which is their version of a virus scan.

If you want to use a virus scan that is popular like Norton or McAfee just remember some popular big name scans like Avast and AVG offer a free version of their virus scan for people to use at their homes (but not for businesses). There are also many free malware (spyware/adware) scans out there for free as well.

All of the mentioned above give you a free basic security, if you are looking for a security suite for business purposes or just want more security I strongly suggest buying a Security Suite. Also if you are using Linux you just need the basics because Linux is extremely more secure than Windows and only gets a small amount of Viruses/spyware/adware compared to Windows.

Windows 8 comes pre-installed with “Windows Defender”, a complete antivirus suite designed to provid

Windows 8 comes pre-installed with “Windows Defender”, a complete antivirus suite designed to provide all-round protection from all types of malicious infections including viruses, Trojans, bots, worms, Trojan horses, Ransomware, Hijacker, Batchwiper, and rootkits etc. Since Windows Defender is a complete antivirus solution which has antivirus, antispyware, anti-malware, anti-phishing, pop-up blocker, Windows Firewall, and many other features, it also minuses the need for another antivirus on a Windows 8 computer in addition to reducing the level and frequency of threats. Despite that Windows Defender (previously known as Microsoft Security Essentials, currently in the version 2013) is a good antivirus solution, the successive failures of Microsoft Security Essentials 2013 in two independent AV-Test(s) have put its existence and reliability in jeopardy. Though Microsoft refused to accept to live with the failures but it has been since then continued to improve the antivirus features of Microsoft Security Essentials 2013.

Knowing this or provided that you are a fan of McAfee or Avast etc., you may want to install the antivirus of your choice on your computer. You can certainly do that and protect your Windows 8 computer from the ever-growing threats distributed by hackers online and offline provided that you don’t want to use the built-in security software of Microsoft. Nearly every security solution vendor has developed antivirus program for Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system. Among these include Avast, Avira, AVG, BitDefender, Symantec’s Norton, McAfee, ZoneAlarm, Malwarebytes, Panda, and Trend Micro etc. You may choose to install any antivirus which you have using for years and do want to continue using it on your Windows 8 computer.

To be able to install an antivirus on your computer, you must first download it from its website. For example you want to purchase McAfee, visit the www.antiviruscloud.net link or http://www.mcafee.com/us/index.html and select which antivirus you want to buy and then complete the purchase. When done, download the McAfee installer file and then follow the below mentioned instructions

Always run the installation file with admin rights

Create your account if prompted (make a note of your username and password also)

Provide necessary information

Configure antivirus features

Follow rest of the on-screen instructions

When done, activate your subscription if required

Run a complete virus scan of your computer when installed (the antivirus may run a virus run automatically)

Update your antivirus with the latest security updates

Pin the antivirus program to Windows 8’s Home screen to be able to access it immediately to download updates, run virus scans, and do other miscellaneous things

Computer Virus (Photo credit: willandbeyond) What are malware, viruses, Spyware, and cookies, and wh

Computer Virus (Photo credit: willandbeyond)

What are malware, viruses, Spyware, and cookies, and what differentiates them ?

“Malware” is short for malicious software and used as a single term to refer to virus, spy ware, worm etc. Malware is designed to cause damage to a stand alone computer or a networked pc. So wherever a malware term is used it means a program which is designed to damage your computer it may be a virus, worm or Trojan.

Worms:-
Worms are malicious programs that make copies of themselves again and again on the local drive, network shares, etc. The only purpose of the worm is to reproduce itself again and again. It doesn’t harm any data/file on the computer. Unlike a virus, it does not need to attach itself to an existing program. Worms spread by exploiting vulnerabilities in operating systems

Examples of worm are: – W32.SillyFDC.BBY
Packed.Generic.236
W32.Troresba

Due to its replication nature it takes a lot of space in the hard drive and consumes more cpu uses which in turn makes the pc too slow also consumes more network bandwidth.

Virus:-
Virus is a program written to enter to your computer and damage/alter your files/data. A virus might corrupt or delete data on your computer. Viruses can also replicate themselves. A computer Virus is more dangerous than a computer worm as it makes changes or deletes your files while worms only replicates itself with out making changes to your files/data.

Examples of virus are: – W32.Sfc!mod
ABAP.Rivpas.A
Accept.3773

Viruses can enter to your computer as an attachment of images, greeting, or audio / video files. Viruses also enters through downloads on the Internet. They can be hidden in a free/trial softwares or other files that you download.

So before you download anything from internet be sure about it first. Almost all viruses are attached to an executable file, which means the virus may exist on your computer but it actually cannot infect your computer unless you run or open the malicious program. It is important to note that a virus cannot be spread without a human action, such as running an infected program to keep it going.

Virus is of different types which are as follows.

1) File viruses
2) Macro viruses
3) Master boot record viruses
4) Boot sector viruses
5) Multipartite viruses
6) Polymorphic viruses
7) Stealth viruses

Bloody Virus (Photo credit: ccox888)

File Virus:-This type of virus normally infects program files such as .exe, .com, .bat. Once this virus stays in memory it tries to infect all programs that load on to memory.

Macro Virus: – These type of virus infects word, excel, PowerPoint, access and other data files. Once infected repairing of these files is very much difficult.

Master boot record files: – MBR viruses are memory-resident viruses and copy itself to the first sector of a storage device which is used for partition tables or OS loading programs .A MBR virus will infect this particular area of Storage device instead of normal files. The easiest way to remove a MBR virus is to clean the MBR area,

Boot sector virus: - Boot sector virus infects the boot sector of a HDD or FDD. These are also memory resident in nature. As soon as the computer starts it gets infected from the boot sector.
Cleaning this type of virus is very difficult.

Multipartite virus: - A hybrid of Boot and Program/file viruses. They infect program files and when the infected program is executed, these viruses infect the boot record. When you boot the computer next time the virus from the boot record loads in memory and then start infecting other program files on disk

Polymorphic viruses: - A virus that can encrypt its code in different ways so that it appears differently in each infection. These viruses are more difficult to detect.

Stealth viruses: – These types of viruses use different kind of techniques to avoid detection. They either redirect the disk head to read another sector instead of the one in which they reside or they may alter the reading of the infected file’s size shown in the directory listing. For example, the Whale virus adds 9216 bytes to an infected file; then the virus subtracts the same number of bytes (9216) from the size given in the directory.

Trojans: - A Trojan horse is not a virus. It is a destructive program that looks as a genuine application. Unlike viruses, Trojan horses do not replicate themselves but they can be just as destructive. Trojans also open a backdoor entry to your computer which gives malicious users/programs access to your system, allowing confidential and personal information to be theft.

Example: – JS.Debeski.Trojan

Trojan horses are broken down in classification based on how they infect the systems and the damage caused by them. The seven main types of Trojan horses are:
• Remote Access Trojans
• Data Sending Trojans
• Destructive Trojans
• Proxy Trojans
• FTP Trojans
• security software disabler Trojans
• denial-of-service attack Trojans

Adware: – Generically adware is a software application in which advertising banners are displayed while any program is running. Adware can automatically get downloaded to your system while browsing any website and can be viewed through pop-up windows or through a bar that appears on a computer screen automatically. Adwares are used by companies for marketing purpose.

Spywares: - Spyware is a type of program that is installed with or without your permission on your personal computers to collect information about users, their computer or browsing habits tracks each and everything that you do without your knowledge and send it to remote user. It also can download other malicious programs from internet and install it on the computer.Spyware works like adware but is usually a separate program that is installed unknowingly when you install another freeware type program or application.

Spam: - Spamming is a method of flooding the Internet with copies of the same message. Most spams are commercial advertisements which are sent as an unwanted email to users. Spams are also known as Electronic junk mails or junk newsgroup postings. These spam mails are very annoying as it keeps coming every day and keeps your mailbox full.

Tracking cookies: - A cookie is a plain text file that is stored on your computer in a cookies folder and it stores data about your browsing session. Cookies are used by many websites to track visitor information A tracking cookie is a cookie which keeps tracks of all your browsing information and this is used by hackers and companies to know all your personal details like bank account details, your credit card information etc. which is dangerous .

Misleading applications: - Misleading applications misguide you about the security status of your computer and shows you that your computer is infected by some malware and you have to download the tool to remove the threat. As you download the tool it shows some threats in your computer and to remove it you have to buy the product for which it asks some personal information like credit card information etc. which is dangerous.

Android is the IN thing and offers the whole world in the form of customization and apps. People all

Android is the IN thing and offers the whole world in the form of customization and apps. People all over the world are finding innovative ways to make them more and more useful in supplementing your life and lifestyle. Whilst all this is good, this also puts the onus on us to keep the phone in a safe and sound mode. Here are a few essential steps to do that

Image Copyright Samsung

When it comes to your smartphone, you don’t always know the power you’re holding. Your phone is basically a computer, and it has the same limitations and weaknesses as any other computer. Take the same basic precautions you would use with a Windows PC — which means, first of all, installing anti-virus software.

Make sure you check out apps carefully before you install them on your phone or tablet. Also, be careful downloading free games for your phone.

If you get urgent fake messages that your phone is virus-infected, these messages are bogus, and if you click and download, that will get your phone actually infected

When it comes to downloading and installing an app, even a popular one like “Angry Birds,” you have to make sure it’s coming from the right developer.

Fake or pirated apps have been found in both the official Google Play app store and “off-road” markets, and these copies of popular games and apps, which may be free or offered at seriously reduced price, often harbor malware.

“Many ask themselves, ‘Why should I update my device?’ The answer is quite simple: By keeping your operating system up-to-date, you will reduce the risk of security vulnerabilities,” said Sabrina M. Powers of SecureState, an information-security provider in Cleveland.

“Your Android device will usually prompt you when an update is available. Most Android updates are carried out ‘over-the-air.’ Therefore, it’s crucial that you are first hooked up to either your mobile network or Wi-Fi before initiating the update

“God forbid your device has been lost or stolen, what should you do? What if the thief attempts to gain access to those embarrassing pictures of you?” Powers said. “No need to panic — there’s an easy fix.

“By adding a remote-wipe feature, you can erase those humiliating pictures (and all other data) remotely before the phone thief gets his grubby hands on them,” Powers said. “Unlike Apple devices such as the iPhone or iPad, Android devices do not natively incorporate features such as Remote Wipe and Backup.

“So instead choose third-party software from a reputable source designed to keep your data safely off your phone.”

Under no circumstances do any financial transactions on your phone, your credit-card data will travel over the air and can be compromised.

It may be more convenient to use your phone, but it’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your credit-card numbers and bank accounts.

Using encryption to keep data secure is an essential part of using any machine. By adding encryption, you give your data security a fighting chance.Enable data encryption by tapping Settings -> Security -> Enable Encryption. By enabling this option, you make it difficult for someone to pull readable data from your phone if the device is lost or stolen

Use a passcode or pattern lock to protect your phone. If you’re choosing a numerical passcode, use more than the minimum four digits.

Instead, use something long and complicated and you will be rewarded with greater security. As always, choose your passcode or pattern wisely.

Remember that these are just a few and you can add many many more as you and your android device get to know each other well.

This year I again submitted a session to the VMworld 2013 Conference.

4510 Tips and Tricks on building agentless Antivirus scanners for Virtual Desktops.

This tips and techniques session is best for administrators and consultants looking to implement an Antivirus solution for their VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI). The goal is to minimize I/O impact to VDI. We will discuss the two most developed scanners taking advantage of VMware vShield Endpoint application programing interfaces (APIs) – Trend Micro Deep Security Antivirus and McAfee Agentless MOVE AntiVirus. Specifically, we will focus on real-world examples of VMware, Trend Micro and McAfee best practices. For example, the participants will learn whether to use their current Antivirus for VDI versus VDI agentless antivirus, why the VM Communication Interface (VMCI) driver is important, how to deploy the Security Virtual Appliances (SVAs), why you should disable VMotion for SVAs, how to test your solution using EICAR test files and how to shut down your VDI agentless antivirus VMs properly if doing maintenance. A basic understanding of VMware vSphere, VMware View and Enterprise Antivirus solutions is recommended.

I am not sure if I will be successful, but here is where your vote can help me speak at the Conference.

Although I am working in IT field yet I am bit apprehensive when it comes to transact online. My mot

Although I am working in IT field yet I am bit apprehensive when it comes to transact online. My mother always advises me not to carry out monetary transactions online as there are rampant cases of online frauds. I am well aware of her fears but still I carry out the transactions as they are effortless and very easy. Moreover, there is relatively less loss of cognitive energy when compared to the transaction to be carried out in the physical world.Although the major fear involved in the online transaction is the loss of money there are other things which need protection, like identity theftm which constitutes a major portion of online theft. The online thieves are everywhere and are looking for anything which can be used or sold. Therefore, in order to avoid it or minimize it (we can’t be foolproof) we need to follow some simple steps which will ensure better safety for us and better surfing experience too. Before I enlist the rules I follow to be on the safer side I would like to ask what are we protecting online? Is it our content, money, software or any other kind of intellectual property? No. Though we are protecting it we can do it if we can protect our user name and password. Yes, the most important thing is the login credential of an individual. If we are successful in protecting it then everything else will automatically be protected. I think now I am absolutely clear. So let us start with the rules.Rule 1 – I will proceed with the transaction only with the trusted sites. This is the foremost and the most important point. Sometimes what hackers do is that they spoof the web address of the website and we access the spoof and enter the confidential information which is directed straight towards the hacker. In technical terms, it is known as ‘Phishing’. In order to avoid this type of attack always remember to click the padlock icon at the right bottom corner of the browser and check the certificate which is issued to the website by the Certified Authority.Rule 2 – I will ensure that my identity is passed through HTTPS protocol. Here I would like to talk a bit about encryption. Encryption is a process by which simple text is transformed into unreadable text also known as cipher text. Actually when we send data via HTTP then it is easy for the hackers to capture the text and read it, but, when we are using the HTTPS protocol, the data being send is not possible to comprehend as it is encrypted. Therefore, always look for the HTTPS sites as they are far more secured.Rule 3 – I will use the public computer cautiously. This is the most dangerous place to carry out any kind of transaction online. Most of these computers are on an un-trusted network and anyone’s identity can be easily compromised. What if the public computer has some spyware like Keylogger to record the keystrokes as we type? Therefore, never use a public computer for exchanging sensitive information. Moreover, as an extra step for safety, we can delete the cache and other private files from the browser and history of the computerRule 4 – I will use the virtual credit card for online shopping. This is an essential step. Suppose I do a lot of shopping online and have to reveal the credit card credentials every now and then so there is a danger of it being misused. Once it gets into the wrong hands, I will in deep trouble. Therefore, it is better to get virtual cards issued from the bank which carry pre-decided amount and the best part is that these are only for one time use and not for repeated use.Rule 5 – I will not pay heed to the mails and attachments received from anonymous addresses as they may contain ‘Trojans’ and will send out the confidential information from my computer to the hacker’s den.Rule 6 – I will keep changing my password and will never write them anywhere. As the saying goes, “Change is the only thing permanent”. This means everything is temporary, even your password. Keep updating your password or else you are making your account more and more vulnerable. Also never write them anywhere for your reference. If your reference falls in the wrong hands then your security will be compromised. Also try to use different passwords for all the accounts.Rule 7 – I will create complex passwords. Not only hackers but anyone close to you can get an idea about your password if you create passwords which are related your name, family, birth date or any other related thing. Even if you are creating these types of passwords then be sure to use some special characters like hyphen, under score, ampersand, exclamation mark etc. Never use password that is related to the account or user name. This is the most common mistake committed by the majority of people.Rule 8 – I will always use an anti-virus and regularly update it. Anti-virus software is an important tool to fight viruses and worms who are trying to infect our computer. Regularly updating the software is also an important task as every now and then new viruses are being created and in order to terminate them we need to be loaded with the new virus definitions.Rule 9 – I will keep my browser up to date. No one is perfect not even your browser. There are many security issues involved. Hackers are working everyday to create something new with which they can breach the security, therefore, we need to keep track of such threats. We must always keep our browser updated as it is an interface using which hackers can easily gain access to our computer. We must update our browsers as and when required so as to fix some bugs or install new features.Rule 10 – I will never forget to logout and then close the browser window. In case of those web sites that use cookies to track sessions, when the user logs out, session-only cookies from that site will usually be deleted from the user’s computer. In addition, the server invalidates any associations with the session, making any session-handle in the user’s cookie store useless. This feature comes in handy if the user is using a public computer. As a security precaution, one should not rely on implicit means of logging out of a system, especially not on a public computer; instead one should explicitly log out and wait for the confirmation that this request has taken place. The rules above are quite simple but very important to be followed.
The folks over at the SANS Internet Storm Center have a recent diary entry on keeping anti-virus (AV

The folks over at the SANS Internet Storm Center have a recent diary entry on keeping anti-virus (AV) software up to date. This kind of anti-malware protection typically tries to recognize “evil code” on the basis of a set of heuristics, or by recognizing bit patterns in the code itself (these are sometimes called “signatures”). These elements, especially the signatures, need to be updated as new varieties of malware are created and discovered “in the wild”. (The defender is always, in a sense, trying to catch up, since a new type of malware has to be found and identified as such before a signature can be developed.)

The contributors to the article are all very capable systems administrators, and I think it’s well worth a read, especially if you are responsible for a bunch of PCs. (There are also some comments following the article itself; they are, as usual, sort of a mixed bag.) I’d take away these suggestions from the discussion:

You may need to schedule AV updates more frequently than your initial instincts (one participant suggests hourly), to account for the fact that the updates will not all run every time they are scheduled. (Machines may be rebooting, or turned off, for example.)

Because updates are not guaranteed to occur on the advertised schedule, it’s important to measure how up to date your machines actually are — if there are big discrepancies, try to find out why and fix the problem.

AV software is one layer of defense, but is certainly not a total solution.

Probably the most important advice is this: if a machine has been compromised by malware, it is highly improbable that AV software, or anything else, will be able to clean or repair it. Modern systems, and the malware that attacks them, are so complex that figuring out exactly what has been affected, compromised, or corrupted is effectively impossible. The only reliable recovery method is “nuking from orbit”: wiping the machines hard drive(s), and reloading the OS, applications, and data from known clean backup copies. Yes, it is a bloody nuisance, but it’s really the only way to make sure that you have a clean system.
