Many things have been said about Marilyn Manson some true some false about his extravagant life style and charismatic and some times controversial live shows.

 One of the lasting thorn in the side comments made about Manson is how bad his Performance at this years Download festival was,

That has left many thinking he’s past it or lost the fire in his belly as he is now more involved in the art world more than the music industry.

 With this in mind I was interested to see how much he has change as a live performer as the last time I saw Marilyn Manson was on the Antichrist Superstar with the Original line up and full stage show. And that show is one of the finest I have ever seen.

As the lights went down and the dry ice came pouring from under the curtain that was hiding the stage the crowd some expecting a disaster some hoping for him to relive past form, were in a frenzy as the opening industrial of “Cruci-Fiction In Space” kicked in the curtain dropped and Manson and fellow band members appeared on a stage full of smoke and strobe lighting like it was the beginning of the apocalypse with Marilyn Manson looking like he was the emperor in Star Wars : Empire strikes back with LAZERS coming from his finger tips

Shock horror for the first 5 songs Manson is back at his best prowling the stage with vile and venom back in his voice he blasts through “Disposable Teens” “ Pretty As A Swastika” “ Love Song” and “Irresponsible Hate Anthem”.

 Then it starts to go a little flat so after a Oxygenreak a change of hat( one of many hats worn during the show), And as if to fire him self up Manson singles out a blond girl in the crowd who does not seem to be enjoying herself he asks why shes got having fun like the rest of the packed out O2 Academy. “ are u deaf? is it because I wont play anything from my first CD, or are you just retreaded!! ” Manson asks with no reply.. so he turns to the crowd and says “its because she knows she has no chance of sleeping with me”.

The crowd are lapping this up and on the show continues with his self motivation at the girls expense working, the rest of the show is like watching a slightly heavier set Manson turning back the clock to his old shows, we have bible burning fake drug taking before the “Dope Show”.costume changes and lots of great songs ending with the 3 pronged attack of “ Sweat Dreams” Patti Smiths “Rock N Roll Nigger” and finally “The Beautiful People”

This is a whole different show to the first time I saw Marilyn Manson, less theatrics and more and bout his great back catalogue of songs even if it didn’t include any of his first CD

Manson did sing “Rock Is Dead” and after this show.. it most definitely is not!!!

The High End of Low is a very important album for Marilyn Manson. The nineties were his golden age – Antichrist Superstar, Mechanical Animals, and Holy Wood were all great albums that offered a unique sound. Unfortunately he’s recently began to falter; The Golden Age of Grotesque was laughably bad and Eat Me, Drink Me was entertaining but ultimately nowhere near his former greatness. After a string of disappointing releases, this new release is Manson’s opportunity to prove to the world that he hasn’t lost his touch.

Right out of the gate, this album presents itself as much different than anything else he has ever released before. “Devour” opens up the album in a very melodic and pop-ish fashion. If it wasn’t for Manson’s unmistakable vocals, I wouldn’t have recognized what artist it was. Thankfully the album doesn’t stay this way for long and the interestingly titled “Pretty as a Swastika” is a few notches up on the heavy scale and is a surprisingly solid track with a much more traditional Marilyn Manson sound that ends too soon.

No matter how much you buy into Manson’s evil persona and image, the reason I’ve always enjoyed his music is because underneath the controversial lyrics and industrial noise there was always a great pop sensibility. No matter how heavy his music would get, it would be irresistibly catchy. He sometimes almost felt like a modern day David Bowie, especially on Mechanical Animals. The interesting thing about this new release is that he seems to be embracing this more melodic side of his sound. Even though he would often compare this album to Antichrist Superstar in interviews, in truth, it’s much closer to Mechanical Animals in style. The High End of Low continues with this melodic, poppy sound for much of its run time. To those who only loved him for his “dark god” persona and the controversy, there is no doubt that this album will deeply disappoint you. But for those of you, who like me, always loved his music because it was fun and catchy while still interesting, you’ll probably find this album to be worth a listen.

When I say this album is “poppy” I don’t mean it’s uninteresting. On the contrary, Manson tries out sounds that have rarely if ever entered his music before. “Four Rusted Horses” is a blues-influenced ballad, “Running to the Edge of the World” sounds like something Oasis would write and “I Want to Kill You Like They Do in the Movies” reaches over 9 minutes long. On the flip side, songs like “Arma-goddamn-motherfuckin-geddon” and “We’re from America” (probably the best of the album)  retain the more classic Marilyn Manson sound.

That’s not to say this album is without its flaws – believe me, it has plenty. While he is definitely trying out new things a lot of it doesn’t really work. The album is at times quite bland and repetitive. The lyrics never really jump out as anything special, the album should have been much heavier, and at over 70 minutes it can sometimes feel like a chore to get through, losing its steam about halfway through. All of that being said, if you’re a fan of his music it’s probably worth giving a listen, just to see how much his sound is changing. Ultimately the album is a mixed bag, but one that will surprise you and be worth giving a listen to.

Wondering who/what I am talking about ? Take a guess …
Its Marilyn Manson, who I feel is one of the most misunderstood artist of all time. I myself had a prejudicial image of him and his music which is very evident cause of his weird n creepy sense of style which cannot go unnoticed; clad in black, black lipstick n nails, mascara, clown make-up, fear inducing ghostly eyes [which btw is nothing but contact lens ].

I was introduced to his music very recently when the movie Max Payne was released starring Mark Wahlberg, which is based off of the hit computer game by the same name. The main theme song of that movie happened to be a track by Marilyn Manson – If I was your vampire. The tune of that song really caught on to me proving very addictive, which lead me to start venturing into the musical realms of Manson. As I started to listen to his famous numbers I could sense a Manson Fan in me emerging out of the shadows, creeping out even. Most of his songs are based on Death, portraying Atheistic philosophies which is why I guess the media has condemned his music and has labeled his band ‘Antichrist’ in nature.

The etymology of his name ? Marilyn – as in Marilyn Monroe the American actress, singer, model and sex symbol and Manson – as in Charles Manson the convicted murderer.

Me being a musical lover and a musician myself, I don’t give a damn about the religious or social implications of any song or music. For me as long as the tune is catchy and I like it its great , else just move on to the next track don’t judge the person. Everyone has a way of expressing their own beliefs, after all its an ART form which is meant to be expressive and idiosyncratic. Anyways I feel its the society/incapable politicians/the media who are just looking, searching for people r faces to blame as being the cause for all that is going wrong in the contemporary world. I have listened to most of his songs now and in no song does he provoke/patronize violence, just that the lyrics pretty much gives a voice to all that is happening; the Bitter truth one might say. Lately I have been reading and listening to his interviews and stuffs, have to say I was very impressed by him who is pretty much a very knowledgeable person. He is known for his abstract paintings as well. After one listens to him speak you would wonder if its the same guy whom a minute ago you had judged as EVIL or dumb or whatever. If you are interested just listen to the following interview by Micheal Moore which is aired in the movie ‘Bowling for Columbine’.

Having said all this there still might be people who would judge him otherwise or for that matter judge me for enjoying his music, quite frankly I don’t give a damn. So am I an Atheist ? For the record, YES I am. And in noway was I influenced/changed by Marilyn Manson, o please. I am the kinda person who believes in thyself, a pragmatic person. I find it not so convincing to just sit and pray for some divine intervention to grant me a wish / solve my existing problem without me having to do nothing. As a matter of fact I was an Atheist since a long time back, owing to experiences in my life which proved over and over again that

Who & What we are now, is an obvious result of the DECISIONS that we have taken todate.

There you have it, the Antichrist Superstar.

Marilyn Monroe wasn’t even her real name, Charles Manson isn’t his real name, and now, I’m taking that to be my real name. But what’s real? You can’t find the truth, you just pick the lie you like the best.

Former Manson keyboardist, Stephen Bier (aka Madonna Wayne Gacy), claims that Marilyn broke a band partnership contract when money was irresponsibly spent on personal Nazi gear and jewelry, among other lavish things.

But the case against Marilyn took a hit when a judge would not allow past MM tax returns to be seen.

Marilyn Manson has had his share of criticism against his reckless ego. Who knows how much of it is true. But I do know one thing: spending the band’s money on lavish personal items is about as reckless as you can get financially. Plus, I always felt that anyone who is buying Nazi paraphernalia for a personal keepsake has more than just a few issues going on.

That being said, one thing the case needs to recognize is that the Nazi gear in question (or was it merely S&M gear) was probably part of Manson’s stage performance and wardrobe. If so, then it was an investment into the band; part of Manson’s creative stage persona that drew fans into the shows. You can’t create the antichrist superstar persona on stage wearing jeans and t-shirts, now can you? That’s Entertainment 101.

First impression: Marilyn innocent. The rest is for the court to decide.

In the end, this may be just a case of the beautiful people with an ax to grind against MM ( Brian Warner).
