Under lördagen marscherade ett 70-tal nazister i Svenska Motståndsrörelsen (SMR) genom Stockholms gator, från Riddarholmskyrkan till Östermalmstorg. Under hela vägen möttes de av hundratals antirasister som buade ut dem längs med marschvägen.

SMR hade utlyst marschen med det uttryckliga syftet att hedra ”karolinerandan”, vars innebörd ”att inte vika av, utan att anfalla” ska syfta till att ingjuta de svenska nazisterna med kampanda. Som vanligt handlade det om att trumpeta ut det sedvanliga rasistiska budskapet. Nu hade man kryddat det med lite hopsnickrad nationalromantik som förskönar kampen för den svenska överhetens intressen då det begav sig, i krig som ledde till oändliga förluster och ett osannolikt lidande för de många fattiga rekryterna i karolinerarmén då de anfördes av en militär ledning som hade föga respekt för de förtryckta soldaternas liv och umbäranden.

Det egentliga syftet med SMR:s marscher är att på klassiskt fascistiskt manér försöka ta gatorna i anspråk. Paraderandet är ett led i SMR:s byggande av en terrorinriktad gatukampsbaserad rörelse – vars våld idag främst riktar sig mot antirasister som vägrar att passivt se på när nazisterna organiserar sig, samt mot dem de föraktar (må det vara homosexuella, invandrare, judar eller kvinnor som vägrar att leva i en position som offer).

För Nätverket Mot Rasism var det därför en självklarhet att protestera mot SMR:s försök, vår församling utlystes kort efter att SMR annonserat om sina planer. Denna ägde rum vid Akademibokhandeln bredvid Sergels torg kl.13, där ett hundratal samlades. Också Stockholms Antifascistiska Tanter (SAFT), fanns på plats. Vi begav oss, efter att tillsammans ha övervägt olika alternativ, ned mot Kungsträdgården och Strömbron för att komma nazisterna så nära som möjligt, och inför dem visa vad vi tycker om dem.

Trots att snuten, som kunde räknas i hundratal (inkl. hästar, hundar helikoptrar och piketer) till en början var angelägna att hålla oss så långt bort ifrån SMR som möjligt, kunde vi efter förhandlingar ta oss fram till kajen och bua ut dem ordentligt, många skramlandes med sina nyckelknippor. Det var ingen tvekan om att de påverkades. SMR nämner själva i sin egen direktrapportering ett av våra slagord för dagen: Krossa rasismen!

Då hade nazisterna redan uppvaktats av grupper av antirasister vid två tillfällen innan de lämnat Gamla Stan. Vid Mynttorget organiserade Stoppa Nazismen den första protesten. Aktivisterna stod uppradade i led längs med marschvägen i gula västar och med skyltar som berättade om många av dem som mördats av nazister i Sverige de senaste 20 åren. För mördare som SMR:s miniführer Klas Lund var det återigen en påminnelse om att vi aldrig glömmer mordet på Ronny Landin 1986, eller på någon annan av det dryga 20-talet människor som nazister mördat sedan dess.

Också vid Slottet, vid Strömbrons början, protesterade gruppen Uppsalabor Mot Rasism mot SMR. De tvingade nazisterna att lyssna på antirasistiska tal, innan nassarna alltså kom ut på bron och då häcklades från andra sidan av många av oss andra i Nätverket Mot Rasism.

Och det slutade inte där. Vid Berzeli park hade initiativet Nazistfritt Stockholm (i vilket bl.a. Rättvisepartiet Socialisterna ingår), som dessförinnan samlats på Sergels torg, infunnit sig för att fortsätta utbuandet av nazisterna. De fick anslutning av en stor samling som deltagit med oss i NMR lagom i tid för att nassarna återigen skulle få känna av våra gemensamma krafter. Återigen fick de frustrerande nazisterna finna sig i att bli utbuade och bespottade.

Slagordet ”SMR, ni kan dra, Stockholm tillhör oss idag” uttryckte väl stämningen bland de protesterande. Längs med så gott som hela marschvägen fick SMR smaka på detta budskap, och deras tänkta styrkeuppvisning förvandlades till en närmast tragisk angelägenhet för de närmast sörjande. De tvingades ”marschera” inmurade av en massiv poliseskort, de tvingades göra halt vid ett flertal tillfällen, och deras isolering från det folk de säger sig slåss för var bara alltför påtaglig.

Även vid avslutningsplatsen, borgarnas Östermalmstorg, samlades många antirasister för att fortsätta protesterna mot SMR. På torgets alla sidor, och även inne på torget, var nazisterna omslutna av grupper av antirasister som häcklade dem med slagord och glåpord när deras ledare försökte ta till orda. Även en del Östermalmsbor ilsknade till och betraktade med avsky nazisternas spektakel utifrån.

Finalen kom när SMR sedan eskorterades ut av trötta snutar till t-banan. Bara omkring 10-15 meter skilde då en av de antirasistiska samlingarna från nazistpacket, och de buades ut och häcklades så att det stod härliga till.

När den patetiska skaran av ”kämpande patrioter” sedan avlägsnats med kollektivtrafiken och lämnat innerstan ansågs dagens protest avslutad av de många antirasister som samlats, som under munterhet begav sig iväg från Stockholms innerstadsgetto för rika. Trots att nazisterna kunde marschera, inte minst p.g.a. det massiva polispådraget, måste gårdagens antirasistiska dominans på innerstadens gator betraktas som en seger.

Yesterday evening, Monday the 16th of November, 26 year old anti-fascist Ivan “Vanya Kostolom” Khutorskoy was shot to death at the entrance to his home at Khabarovsk street in the east side of Moscow; according to some information with two shots to his head.

Vanya was a great figure in the Russian anti-fascist movement, and I am sure many people will write down their memories of him in thedays, months and years to come. But as of today most of his friends are too angry and too shocked, at the loss of this friend and comrade.

My first memories of Vanya are from around 2004, I was running anarchist distro at a concert in R-Club. By that time I wasn’t going to gigs too often, so most of the faces were unknown to me. It was before the period when after the murder of Sasha Ryukhin when Moscow hardcore went completely underground. Thus the concert was openly announced, and you could not be sure who was around. So I was a bit wary of the skinhead crowd, especially this one big guy. But there was no reason to worry, Vanya being there was actually the best guarantee that any trouble would be handled.

I do not know where Vanya got his nickname “Kostolom”, “Bonecrusher”. Maybe it was some kind of joke, as it is hard to imagine a more friendly and humorous guy than Vanya.

Last time I saw Vanya was at the “No surrender” mixed martial arts tournament, organised on the 10th of October this year in Moscow. The tournament was organised in memory of another murdered anti-fascist, Fyodor Filatov. Vanya was the referee, as seen in the photo above. Vanya was well-trained in Sambo, a martial arts developed in Soviet Union which is still popular in the region. He he had some success in tournaments and he achieved the degree of Candidate for Master of Sports of Russia. He also competed in arm-wrestling. This was one of the reasons that made him especially feared and hated among Nazis, since they attempt to picture their enemies as weak alcoholics and junkies. Few Nazis could match up to Vanya in a fair fight, this is why they attacked him with razorblades, screwdrivers and knives, and when even that did not work out, with a gun.

Before that my last meeting with him was outside the Ska-P concert last May. None of my friends had enough money to pay 30 euros for a concert of Spanish ska-punkers, but we decided to give out free anti-fascist papers outside. After all, on the concert poster the group was in anti-fascist t-shirts – not a big thing in Spain, but something for which a musician may have to pay with his life in Moscow. Thus handing stuff outside was not any worse than leafletting random people at the street. Vanya and a number of other people were asked to cover us.

The reaction of semi-yuppie clubbers and punks to our papers was mixed – obviously many were there just to party. Then a phonecall – another group of comrades was in a trouble few kilometers south, followed by a larger mob of Nazis. Our cover had to move to clear things out. I had no plans for a fight that evening, but I had little choice – having distributed anti-fascist papers to hundreds of people, going wandering around afterwards alone could easily end up with 5 inches of steel between my ribs. So I had to stick with the crew.

We met with the other mob and regrouped. Vanya warned about not attacking as soon as Nazis were in sight due to the fact that they would figure out that they were outnumbered and just run away and never get caught. But people could not hold themselves back. 100+ meters was way too much distance to close the gap, Nazis ran to alleys and jumped over some fences, no one was caught. I was in bad shape so I could not run as fast as the rest, Vanya simply didn’t run because he knew it was pointless. So we were left behind the mob with some girls who avoided being in the frontline, and together we took a look around if any Nazis had hidden in an alley to our side.

Later that evening, another regroup – some asses kicked, some more missed opportunities. But it would be pointless to tell all these stories – while I was an unusual guest, for Vanya beating up Nazis was as routine as waking up in the morning. To tell one of these stories would be to tell nothing, as there are hundreds of them.

Vanya was a common face in the punk scene since the beginning of the century. Anti-antifa websites have large galleries of him, the oldest photos with a mohawk hairstyle. He was not in the first Moscow Antifa generation which got together around spring of 2002, but when he joined up in 2003-2004 he stayed for good.

Sometimes, after such tragedies, there is a kind of sad body-snatching match going on where everyone wants to claim a dead hero – that was the case for example with Stanislav Markelov, who, while still alive was a prankster who told to anarchists that he was a social-democrat, and to trotskists and stalinists that he was an anarchist, just to frustrate everyone.

With Vanya, any such post-mortem claims would be a misrepresentation any way you look at it, as every clique and crew in the scene considered him one of their own, and he was respected and loved by absolutely everyone. Vanya considered himself a RASH skinhead, which did not hold back the apolitical and patriotic Moscow Trojan Skinheads from considering him as one of them. Anarchists of course considered Vanya one of the anarchists, and it is true that Vanya had an anti-authoritarian and social position and was always ready to provide security for anarchists events. But he did not live for activism – he lived for the streets and for punk rock.

He was as sharp as a razorblade, and he finished his juridical studies at the Russian State Social University with a “red diploma”, that is a diploma “with excellence” given to students in the region of the former Soviet Union who have almost exclusively the best possible grades. As there are few people with juridical studies in the scene, I had some hopes that Vanya would join the ranks of the activist lawyers when he would retire from street fighting one day – even before he was murdered, Stas Markelov was overhelmed with legal cases from our movement and had trouble in dealing with them alone. Vanya and Stas knew each other well, and Vanya also provided security to some press-conferences held by Stas. Most recently Vanya worked as a lawyer in “Deti ulitsy”-center (“Children of the street”), which works with street children and other children with difficulties.

Of course people now ask why he went to his flat that evening, although his address was posted all around in the Nazi websites. Vanya often stayed in other places. Maybe he had some important business with his family, maybe he just spit in the face of death, having survived so many attempts on is life.

Vanya was jumped the first time in 2005 and his head was cut with a razorblade. This incident was recorded with a CCTV camera and used in a TV documentary of NTV channel, which is available online here.

Next time, in the autumn of the same year, they attempted kill him – his neck was punctured 6 times with a sharpened screwdriver, which is a popular weapon among Russian Nazis as it punctures deeper than a knife. Any of these strikes could have been lethal, but miraculously none of them hit arteries and he survived. This incident was also recorded to a CCTV camera, but cops had little interest in investigatingand they didn’t even check the recording! It took more than half a year for Vanya to fully recover from this attack.

In January of this year, Vanya was stabbed in his stomach during a street fight, this wound was almost lethal as well but he survived. And now, when everything else failed, Nazis decided to use guns – they finally succeeded.

Yesterday, on November 16 we lost our friend.

Ivan Hutorskoy, also known as “Kostolom”, was an Antifascist and he died for his beliefs.

Ivan was one of the founders of Russian militant Antifascist movement.

He was one of those few kids who stood up against the Neo-Nazi hordes, dominating the Russian punk/hardcore scene in the 90-s and early 00-s.

While the majority of the scene was compromising with Nazi assholes, Kostolom and his closest friends started to kick the fascists out of the gigs. Soon Ivan became the founder and respected leader of Moscow RASH (Red And Anarchist Skinheads).

Throughout the years he was fighting Nazis on the streets, organizing the security of punk/hardcore gigs, taking part in countless demos, training kids in martial arts.

Neo-Nazis hated Ivan, always scared of him as one of their most dangerous enemies. His photos, address and death threats to him were posted on countless Neo-Nazis web-sites.

He had been attacked many times, ambushed near his house, always jumped by numerous opponents packed with knifes, bats and screwdrivers. He used to spend weeks in hospitals, often balancing on the edge between life and death. But he always stayed true to his beliefs and ideals.

Always on the front line. Always ready to fight any enemy, even when outnumbered. His nickname – Kostolom (“Bonecrusher” in Russian ) spoke for itself.

Ivan was ambushed near his apartment. The cowards shot him twice in the back of his head, too scared to face him even with a gun in their hands.

He lived his life like a warrior and died like a true hero.

Rest in peace, uncle Vanya! You are in our hearts forever! Never forget!

NMR kampanjflygblad <— Skriv ut och sprid!

Stora politiska omvälvningar sker just nu. Det politiskt korrekt och inkorrekta håller på att omdefinieras i en öppen strid mellan de olika styrkeförhållandena i vårt så annars “lugna” Sverige.

“Trygghet och Tradition” har genomsyrat hela det politiska klimatet i välfärds-Sverige och paradoxalt nog så är det Sd som bryter det. För första gången på lång tid så visar Sd öppet sin rasism, eller enligt deras definition: “trygghetslinje”. Helin (Aftonbladets chefredaktör) tror sig ta tillfället i akt men fungerar istället som Jimmie Åkessons lilla marionett. Publicerandet av partiledarens får inte den riktning chefredaktören tror utan avslöjandet av Sd:s politik erkänner ger styrka åt den rasistiska opinionen. Precis som Sd vill så byggs nu två läger upp inför valet år 2010, vilket gör att debatten mer och mer blir på deras villkor. Allting ställs på sin spets och Reinfeldt börjar svettas, den rasistiska opinion som Alliansen strykt medhårs med sin smårasism fungerar inte längre som strategi för att locka Sd-väljare. Kompromissen verkar omöjlig och den borgerliga regeringen tvingas nu att stå i kontrast till Sverigedemokraterna. Jimmie Åkesson jublar av lycka: nu är det han som dikterar villkoren.

Kamrater, ett nytt slag av striden har börjat.

Fingret i luften heter den politik som socialdemokraterna tror ska rädda de usla opinionssiffrorna. Mona Sahlin noterar att högervinden är stark och missar därför helt vänstervinden som är på uppsegling.

Tydligen har hon även missat att läsa tidningen de senaste dagarna. Maud Olofssons opinionssiffror har ju knappast rasat på grund av vänstervridning inom centerns mest centraliserande citykommitté. Den slags (M)ittenpolitik vrider istället politiken ytterligare ett snäpp åt höger och snart går det inte att komma längre, om man inte ska riskera krocka med SD.

Det verkar som Mona förväxlar S’, FP:s & C:s målgrupper –  ur vilka tänkbara väljare kan hämtas - med SD:s; oroväckande, minst sagt. Vilka politiska krafter är det egentligen hon vill fria till, med detta sällsynt illa genomtänkta utspel i valrörelseupptakten? Sitter socialdemokraternas upphandlade mediastrateger i ett ljudisolerat rum dit ingen information från omvärlden når fram hur högljudd och alarmerande den än är.

Så här i vinterns gruvhål kan det kännas som det kompakta mörkret kongenialt illustrerar vad som händer i politiken. Istället för att blicka mot framtiden med ljusnande blick stirrar man in i ett svart hål, som uppslukar nuet med hypnotiskt magnetisk dragningskraft från ett europeiskt diktatoriskt historiskt förflutet.

Den hurtfriska naiviteten hos de styrande i Europas ledarskikt bortser från vad krig, tortyr och folkmord kan göra med en kontinent och vilka spår som det därför sätter långt in i nuet. SD:s framgångar i opinionen är ett levande och brännande aktuellt exempel på detta. Så även den övriga extremhögerns frammarsch i Europa.

Sämsta sättet att hantera situationen är således att hänsynstagande spela den i händerna genom ytterligare högervridning av politiken. Istället behövs motkraft från vänster. Om möjligt ännu sämre var steget att ratificera Lissabonfördraget så att den demokratiska kontrollen över den verkställande makten går förlorad. Lissabonfördraget ger farligt fria händer för de styrande över 500 miljoner européer försänkta i djup ekonomisk kris med en massarbetslöshet som är i växande.

Eleverna på Hulebäcksgymnsasiet i Härryda kommun agerade i onsdags förebilder för alla Sveriges ungdomar när de körde ut Nationaldemokraternas ungdomsförbund NDU från skolan. Skolan hade en partidag där alla partier som skrev på att de delade skolans värdegrund fick delta. Nationaldemokraterna hade skrivit på detta och skolledningen tyckte tydligen att detta var nog för att godkänna dem.

När fler och fler elever blev uppmärksammade på att nazisterna i NDU hade ett bokbord på skolan, med bland annat rasistiska flygblad, blev stämningen orolig. Folk ville naturligtvis inte ha nazister på skolan! Det gick så långt att skolledningen fick rycka in för att skydda nazisterna. De bildade kedja runt nazisternas bokbord och enligt en källa som var på platsen blev vissa elever till och med inlåsta för att de inte skulle ansluta sig till protesterna! Eleverna visade sitt förakt mot nazisterna genom att skrika slagord och kasta ihopknögglade papperslappar på dem. Skolledningen fick slutligen ge vika för elevernas protester och bad nazisterna lämna platsen. Men de vägrade lämna platsen utan poliseskort. Under skydd av polisen kunde nazisterna slutligen eskorteras ut ur skolan.

Flera elever från Hulebäcksgymnasiet har kommenterat nyheten och med rätta varit stolta över det inträffade. Signaturen Stolt elev på Hule skriver på RS Göteborgs blogg:

“Troligen ville han eskorteras ut från skolan av polis då nu hundratals elever omringat dem och visade sin avsky. /…/ Synd att polisen tvingades ta med dom ut, annars hade vi elever som var där gärna gjort skolan en tjänst och kastat ut idioterna.”

En av skolans rektorer som var med och försvarade nazisterna från eleverna sa att det var en lektion i vardagslivets demokrati att respektera NDU:s närvaro. I diskussionen som följt händelsen finns det många som använder liknande argument för att försvara nazisternas rätt att sprida sin propaganda.  De använder liberal retorik för att få er att känna er odemokratiska när ni vägrade acceptera nazisternas närvaro.

Men ni ska inte ha dåligt samvete. Istället ska ni vara stolta, för det var ni Hulebäckselever som visade prov på äkta demokrati under denna dag! Nu i efterhand försöker skolledningen få det till att nazisterna fick lämna platsen för att de bröt mot skolans värdegrund. Med det var era protester som tvingade ledningen att byta spår. Bra jobbat!

Under lördagen deltog medlemmar av Revolution i en flygbladsutdelning med Nätverket Mot Rasism. Rapport från NMR:

Aktivister i Nätverket Mot Rasism delade idag, lördag, ut buntar med flygblad vid Älvsjö-mässan, där det nu pågår gymnasiemässa. Ett stort antal människor, varav majoriteten var ungdomar, tog emot flygbladet. Många stannade till för att ta en kaffe eller te vid det medhavda kampanjbordet. Stämningen var god. Vi delade upp oss i mindre grupper som stod längs med hela vägen som förbinder mäss-hallen med pendeltågsstationen.

Flygbladet som vi delade ut informerar om två kommande aktiviteter: dels om den nyckelskramlar-aktion som NMR utlyst mot Svenska Motståndsrörelsens planer på att marschera genom centrala Stockholm nästa lördag (28 nov), dels om den demonstration Nätverket organiserar på 30 november. Sprid ordet, och slut upp på dessa aktiviteter, detta var vårat budskap för dagen.

Standing precariously on a bin as thousands of people swarmed into George Square banging drums and chanting, anti-racist campaigner Aamer Anwar yesterday proclaimed a victory for the people of Glasgow over “racism, fascism and the Scottish Defence League (SDL)”.

His celebration followed a day in which the far-right group’s threat to march on Glasgow Central Mosque came to nothing, as police penned its members into a pub before bussing them to various spots on the periphery of the city, extinguishing the chances of a conflict before it had the chance to ignite. There were a few minor skirmishes in and around the city centre between the tiny SDL contingent and rival demonstrators, who were out in their thousands. Five people were arrested.

Although both sides claimed to have achieved their aims, the sheer numbers that mustered under the banner of Scotland United, a broad-spectrum alliance of political parties, trade unions and civil society groups, demonstrated that most of Glasgow has little truck with the “anti-Islamic” policies of the SDL and its English counterpart.

Mr Anwar, speaking at the head of a thousand protesters as they marched into George Square, said: “Just over 100 members of the Scottish and English Defence Leagues came to Glasgow today, skulked in a pub and were then bussed off away from the city centre. We proved that the only group that the people of Glasgow would tolerate on their streets were Scotland United. I would call this a victory.”

The SDL, announced plans to march in Glasgow several months ago after the English Defence League (EDL) attracted hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of supporters to rallies in cities including Leeds, Manchester and Birmingham.

The groups formed to protest exclusively against what they view as Islamic extremism, and claim to be a new political movement which has dispensed with the racist policies of far-right parties like the British National Party (BNP).

But critics, such as Mr Anwar, claim they are nothing but “a violent wing of the British National Party”.

Yesterday, the first protest in a day of political action in Glasgow took place at St Enoch Square at 10am.

Organised independently of Scotland United, the demonstration was made up of socialists, left-wing students and anti-fascists, who gathered outside the underground station before marching up Buchanan Street, chanting “Nazi scum off our streets” and “we’re black, white, Asian and we’re Jews”.

Daniel O’Donnell, a 61-year-old member of the Scottish National Party and veteran of anti-fascist protests, said: “Far-right and fascist movements have got more publicity now than I remember them ever having before, particularly after the BNP were allowed to speak on Question Time.

“The Scottish Defence League claims to be different from the BNP, but on paper, say critics, they look the same.

“This is not about showing the SDL who’s boss,” said O’Donnell, “but showing them that they are not welcome in Glasgow. We have enough problems in this city without them stirring up hatred. They have no place here.”

This splinter protest was organised by people who backed the aims of Scotland United but felt a bulwark against the Defence League was needed early in the day. Scotland United’s Glasgow Green rally was not until noon, which gave the SDL all morning to march the streets.

Sam Beaton, a 21-year-old student, said he and his fellow protesters had gathered to make sure the SDL demonstrators knew there would be someone to stand up against them if they took to the streets of Glasgow.

He said: “We’re mobilising here against the SDL, to make sure there is an anti-fascist presence in the town centre all morning. We have to be prepared for them, even if they decide to use violence. We’re not scared because we are a bigger, broader movement than them. They will not cause the same trouble they did in Leeds and Manchester.”

An hour after the protest started in St Enoch Square, the SDL gave out information about its meeting point on a phone number it had advertised on internet bulletin boards. Its members had organised the demonstration in secrecy on Facebook, other social networking sites and online discussion forums, withholding their exact plans from police and the city council.

The Sunday Herald was at the meeting point, a small pub in the city centre called The Cambridge where around 150 activists gathered, although police claimed there were only 70. Some covered their faces with scarves as they chanted and waved banners in the street.

Several key members of the SDL and EDL had been stopped on their way to the pub and some claimed to have been visited by officers from Strathclyde Police and banned from the city centre for the day.

Hundreds of police had formed a cordon around the pub, refusing to let anyone in or out. Inside,the leader of the SDL, who would only give his name as Don, attacked the anti-fascist protesters, claiming they were “spouting tired old rubbish” by labelling the SDL Nazis or racists.

Don said: “As soon as you say anything you’re labelled a racist, a Nazi, a fascist or a knuckle-dragging skinhead. We’re none of those things. We just want to highlight the Islamification of the country and show people that some, not all, young Muslims are having hate and militancy preached to them.

“People say that this sort of thing doesn’t happen in Scotland, but it is. I bet they didn’t think someone would try to blow up Glasgow Airport. We don’t want young Muslim schoolboys to be radicalised, go away to train and then come back to blow up the city.”

In The Cambridge, there was a febrile atmosphere. The curtains were closed but the bar stayed open, serving pints to the SDL contingent, who mostly resembled old-school skinheads, replete with tattoos. They were loath to give their names, and insisted we took no photos.

One member from the Airdrie branch said: “We’re just here to protest against extremist Islam and Republican terrorists, who have tried to take over our country for 40 years and failed. We’re not racist, we’re not Nazis and we’re not the BNP. I’ve got black friends and Muslim friends – race doesn’t bother me.”

He added: “Our great-grandfathers fought and fell against the Nazis in two world wars. It’s a slur on our grand-fathers to call us Nazis.”

There was a brief stand-off as the anti-racist protesters from St Enoch Square marched near the pub, after using the SDL’s phone line to find out its location. They rallied for a few minutes before heading down to Glasgow Green to the mainstream Scotland United event to listen to the speakers.

After being penned into the bar from 11am until about 12.30pm, police briefly allowed the SDL members out to protest, giving them the opportunity to chant slogans like “no surrender to the IRA” or sing Rule Britannia.

Police tolerated their protest for barely 20 minutes before packing them off in a bus. They were dumped at the Red Lion, a pub on Paisley Road West, and warned that anyone who tried to go back into town would be arrested.

The SDL’s original plans to march on Glasgow Central Mosque were thwarted at the point of application. Glasgow’s policy on marches is “somewhere between Northern Ireland and England” said a city council source, with special legislation designed to manage Orange marches. This means that while a static demonstration requires no permission from the council or police, any moving procession needs to be given the go-ahead by the authorities.

However, the SDL’s application for a moving procession was made using only the first name, Donald. The council’s request for more information was rejected. When the SDL was warned that its members would not be allowed to use the streets to protest, it replied that they would be happy to use the pavement – something a council source said would still be illegal.

At the same time as the SDL’s brief protest, the Scotland United rally at Glasgow Green heard speakers including Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon, Scottish Tory leader Annabel Goldie, Labour MP Mohammed Sarwar and the Rev Ian Galloway from the Church of Scotland.

They praised Scotland’s multiculturalism and slammed the SDL, with Mr Sarwar labelling its members “nuts”.

He said: “The message from here is loud and clear: BNP, Scottish Defence League, English Defence League are not allowed to march on the streets of

Glasgow. Scotland is united against these thugs and fascists.

“I want to congratulate Glasgow City Council for rejecting the application from these nuts to march on the streets. I am proud to be a

Glaswegian and a Scot, because we are different. There were confrontations in Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds, but we are having a peaceful rally. People in England and Europe can learn a lot from us.”

In a rousing speech, Ms Sturgeon said: “I’m proud to be standing shoulder to shoulder with Scotland’s Muslim communities, with all of Scotland’s communities. We are a diverse county, a multicultural county and that is what makes us strong. We are proud to defend that multiculturalism every single day or whenever it is put under attack.”

Ahead of the Scotland United event Osama Saeed, chairman of the Scottish Islamic Foundation, said that the only people missing from the coalition were Muslim elders themselves. There had been frantic wrangling behind the scenes as Mr Saeed and Mr Anwar tried to persuade mosque elders to take part.

Mr Saeed said: “The people running mosque don’t get involved in anything and tend to be very reclusive – this is another manifestation of it. A lot of them are immigrants and don’t see themselves as part of society, not the prominent actors they could and should be. It requires a huge change of mindset.”

After the Scotland United rally had finished, some 3500 people marched through the city towards George Square, where a minute’s silence was observed for the victims of racist killings in Scotland, including Indian naval officer Kunal Mohanty and Pollokshields teenager Kriss Donald.

Afterwards, Aamar Anwar claimed his coalition had inflicted a “humiliating defeat on the Nazi defence league”, but Don, the organiser of the SDL protest yesterday, gave one final warning: “He may say it’s a victory, but it’s hollow, because we’re not going nowhere. The next victory will be ours. We will stage demonstration after demonstration after demonstration. Today has gone well. We’ve had a peaceful protest, we’ve not hurt anybody. We’ve had the real victory today and won many more supporters. It’s been a big day for us.”

But not all SDL members agreed with Don. On the group’s Facebook site, even supporters were questioning the success of the Glasgow demonstration. In a post called Demo Today, one SDL member wrote: “I’m embarressed (sic).”

Another wrote: “People were literally laughing at us like we were clowns.” He added: “What demo in Glasgow? People were too scared to leave the pub. What a f******* shambles wae people laughing at us?”, while another claimed: “It was an absolute shambles. ‘SDL’ is utter pish.”

New Yorkers Against David Irving call for resistance to the speaking engagements of pseudo-historian David Irving’s east coast tour, including his November 14th date in New York City.

David Irving is a notorious pro-Nazi history writer. He has made repeated anti-Semitic, Holocaust Denial and racist statements over the years, including that “no document whatsoever indicating the Holocaust occurred” has been found, and “the holocaust of the Germans of Dresden was real. The holocaust of the Jews in the Auschwitz gas chambers is a fabrication.” Although he has retreated from some of these statements, Irving has continued to blame Jews for what the Nazis did to them; he attempts to minimize the scope of the Holocaust; and he publicly praises Adolf Hitler.

Irving’s fascist views go back to at least 1959. He has been associated with neo-Nazi, anti-Semitic and Holocaust Denial organizations such as the National Alliance, the Liberty Lobby, and the Institute for Historical Review. In 2006 he was jailed for trivializing the Holocaust in Austria, where it is illegal. Since his release, Irving has marketed himself as a former “political prisoner”.

As the name of his publishing project suggests, Irving serves as a “focal point” to bring together Jew-haters and goose-steppers. He is part of a political tendency that actively organizes to tear apart communities, and particularly to persecute Jews. The June murder of a security guard at the US Holocaust Museum by James von Brunn shows where this racist and anti-Semitic tendency often leads. Van Brunn moved in many of the same circles that promote Irving’s work.

We call for people to confront Irving at each stop of his tour. In July, one quarter of his west coast dates were met by protests. We encourage the communities which Irving is passing through to send a clear message that fascist organizing is not welcome in their town! Please join us in doing this in New York City.

Die Kristallnacht in germana, a fost un pogrom la scara nationala care a avut loc in noaptea de 9 spre 10 noiembrie 1938 in Germania nazista si Austria. Noaptea de cristal este practic inceputul holocaustului, cea mai cunoscuta si studiata atrocitate din istorie.

In seara zilei de 9 noiembrie, in multe orase din Germania si Austria au avut loc rabufniri violente ale populatiei, incitata de membrii ai Gestapoului, SS-ului, NSDAP-ului si ai Hitlerjugend-ului. Violentele au început la Berlin si s-au raspandit rapid in toata Germania. In acea noapte, grupuri de nazisti, au asasinat peste 90 de evrei, au batut alte cateva sute de evrei, au demolat 76 de sinagogi, au incendiat alte zeci de lacasuri de cult mozaic, au distrus si vandalizat mii de magazine si birouri de afaceri detinute de evreii germani.
Politia germana nu a intervenit, iar pompierii au avut grija ca focul sa nu se extinda la alte cladiri. Majoritatea cetatenilor germani nu a participat la violente si jafuri, dar nici nu s-au opus acestora. Violentele au durat 24 de ore. Cartile religioase ale comunitatilor evreiesti au fost arse în strada.
