Last week-end Jenne Rayburn Jewelry joined antiques, architectural salvage, vintage clothing, and original art at The Vintage Bazaar, an upscale outdoor market in Salisbury, MA. Despite being book-ended by rain on Saturday, the two days turned out to be delightfully warm with great live music and homemade ice-cream.

Thank you to Devon Chouinard-Allen for her hard work and wonderful style, which made the week-end a huge success. You can check out pictures from the day on The Vintage Bazaar Facebook page.

The feedback from the day was amazing, especially from customers admiring the recycled plastic necklaces. And the other venders were so generous with their advice and wisdom. We had a great experience!

Last weekend, I headed down to the Kalamazoo Antique Market in search of some vintage brooches for a little project I am working on for later

Not only is this place more of a mall than a market, but with only 15 minutes to do a quick scan, I walked out with two brooches, a necklace, a ring and a pair of earrings. All for only $40!

I took it a step further by heading out to the J.Crew outlet and stumbling upon a fantastic leopard cardigan that I have been in search of for some time now. I also got it in the Crewcuts section.. some things never change. See the complete look below:

My road trippin’ weekend landed me in Chicago for the Randolph Street Market. A flea market, filled to the brim with ‘old stuff”. My pickin’ partner was Sarah, who happens to be the wife of an actual ‘picker’ – you know the people who find old things way below their value, then sell them for what they’re worth. Being terribly afraid of any sort of confrontation, I am awful at haggling prices. Unacceptable to Sarah, she forced me to do it at least once.

It went something like…

Me: Would you accept $10 for this?

Lady: No, it’s $15.

So much for that…but Sarah was striking ‘em down left and right. I may have a little bit more to learn from that gal.

Hull Pottery was founded in 1905 by Addis Emmet Hull in Crooksville, Ohio and is considered to be one of the “Ohio Four” in Classic Americana Pottery. The other three being McCoy, Roseville and Weller. As with all collectibles Hull Pottery has seen it’s demand rise and fall over the years and recently we are seeing a rebirth of popularity.

Hull Pottery, c. 1958-60 “Tokay & Tuscany” 8″ Basket, mold # 6, $85.00

For me Hull’s strength has always been it’s ability to capture a piece of Americana expressed through classic roots as displayed in their “Tokay and Tuscany” line which for me is an American interpretation of Classic Italian forms and design. Look at the “Parchment and Pine” series and you see a nod to the American West with boot shaped pitchers decorated with pine cones and rolled parchment deeds.

Hull Pottery, c. 1951-54 “Parchment & Pine” 14.25″ Ewer, Mold # S-7, $170.00

Hull Pottery remained in business until 1986 and created not only sophisticated ceramic pieces but also playful utilitarian items. You can see a display of Hull’s work offered for sale today, June 24th at The Jamestown Vintage Flea Market where 50 plus vendors set up shop at 474 El Camino Real, Tustin from 8:00 AM until 3:00 PM. Look for our green and white tent, we hope to see you there!

We’re huge fans of second-hand shopping at AMP. Whether it’s a perfectly worn in pair of denim cut-offs or a quirky piece of furniture to complete a room, thrift shopping and antiquing always results in the unexpected. The thrill of shopping at flea markets often the process itself. Sometimes you find exactly what you want. Sometimes you find something that you didn’t know you needed but absolutely have to have. Either way, “thrifting” is always an adventure and one of the best places to do just that is the Long Beach Antique Market at Veteran’s Stadium. It’s a gigantic outdoor market that has everything from antiques and collectibles to vintage clothing to one of a kind re-purposed furniture and accessories. We spoke with the market’s founders, Donald and Lynn about their historic monthly event.

The market started as ” the only outdoor antique and collectible market in Los Angeles.” Lynn told us. “Cheap, Chic, Unique, Vintage” is the once a month market’s slogan because they “were the first ones to have a market solely for the collectors, solely for people who wanted to reuse, re-purpose, and redesign”. This isn’t a traditional flea market with a strange mix of new, old, and everything in between. The vendors at the Long Beach Antique Market are not allowed to sell anything produced within the last 20 years!

Image courtesy Long Beach Antique Market

20 acres and over 800 vendors can be overwhelming for someone new to the world of secondhand shopping, so we got some tips on how to navigate the market’s treasure-filled aisles.

Where should I begin?

A good way to start is to go in with a specific item in mind like “a small end table or a lamp so you can filter out all the other things as you’re walking down the aisle”. Don’t feel bad if you want to be a little more free form and just take it all in while you meander… that’s kind of what we do.

Aren’t these things like really early in the morning?

DO arrive early. They open at 5:30 in the AM for early admission. Donald told us that “you’ll never regret it. If you don’t mind getting up early, you’ll see things before the majority of our customers so, if it’s something that’s really unique, one of a kind and you must have. It pays to get there early”. But if you’re a late riser, Lynn had some assurance: “Variety is so huge [...] that even if you get there late, you’re not going to feel like there’s nothing left”.

Why should I buy vintage?

First of all, it’s fun! You’ll meet some great people, see things you can’t find at the mall, and you might even make a profit! Don told us that “There are people who have found items at our show who have told me that they got a tremendous bargain and found an old piece of artwork that should have been $1200 and they got it for $50″. One of our writers can attest to this. She got a mid-century chair for around $30 and it ended up being worth around $200!

Another reason is because it’s totally hot right now to buy vintage and handmade. The fact that you can find one of a kind items means that you can infuse your personal style into every single detail of your home or wardrobe. Flea markets are the perfect place to find your own style “by just walking around and seeing what appeals to you instead of walking around in a store where they’ve chosen the items for you”.

Image courtesy Long Beach Antique Market

The Long Beach Antique Market is a truly unique experience that we think our listeners would love. The next event is this Sunday, June 17th. If you want a peek of the unique treasures you can find at the market, take a look at the gallery we put together here!

I’ve always been a big fan of markets; Mexico City is full of them. One of the best for me is the “Lagunilla Market”, which is one of the largest. It has a special sections where you can find any type of antiques, from books, magazines, toys, coins, bikes, sunglasses and furniture to cameras, televisions, sewing machines, well everything. I always go with my uncles and cousins, we play to whoever finds the weirdest piece or object wins, and I almost always win. I have bought amazing things, my “treasures” are a framed picture of James Dean, a vinyl record of The Beatles (which is in a perfect condition) and I also have bought some photographs. Go and take a look, even the last thing you can think of is there.

Most of the components for my vintage inspired jewelry are found right here in New England using locally sourced vintage textiles, buttons, and costume jewelry, and with up-cycled materials such as discarded findings and components from bygone jewelry manufactures. People are often surprised to find out that by the 1950’s most of the world’s costume jewelry was being made in America, and most American costume jewelry was made on the East Coast in Rhode Island and New York City, with glass “stones” imported from Swarovski and other European manufacturers.

The Brimfield Antiques Show is the largest outdoor antiques show in the world, with over 6,000 dealers and 130,000 visitors during the course of one week, held three time a year in May, July and September. I always look forward to attending! While I refer to it as “Brimfield”, the show is actually comprised of 23 fields, owned by individual promoters who lease spaces to dealers from all over the world. The large fields of venders are located on a mile long stretch of a two-lane road (both sides!) just outside the town of Brimfield, in central Massachusetts.

Sturbridge Antique Textile and Vintage Clothing Show

The Brimfield Antiques week starts off with a one day indoor Vintage Textile and Vintage Clothing Show in nearby Sturbridge. Approximately 250 Vendors set up at the Host Hotel, selling everything imaginable related to vintage fashion and textiles. I always look forward to the vintage buttons from Byson Buttons, and this year I found trims from the Tinsel Trading Company.

Brimfield Treasures

It is not possible to capture the amazing array of style and personality at the shows, not to mention all of the items for sale! Last year I saw some fashionistas walking around with a TV camera, but many of the vendors don’t allow pictures in their booths. Instead I furiously make notes in my sketchbook, endlessly inspired by the colors and textures of so many treasures. And, I feel very lucky to have a wealth of knowledgeable sellers in my own back yard. I look forward to chatting with people at Brimfield about jewelry history and culture as much as I do discovering a new piece for my collections.

In the heart of Islington borough, the Camden Passage Antiques market is one of the must-see of North London. If you haven’t walk through yet, it has to be done. The sun is coming back, no more excuses!

A little history:
To learn a bit more about the market, it is usually simple to ask one of the trader. They usually know better than anyone, having worked in the place for so long. Back to the 60s, Leigh Underhill opened an antique boutique in Camden Passage which was, at that time, not a very nice area. John Payton, a businessman living in what we call now Angel, had the idea of creating an antique center in North London. With the help of traders and antiques dealers, he built an entire village of antiques dealers that has been described as a typical ‘Georgian market’.

The market:
The market, opened on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, is now hosting more than 200 different traders, from antiques to vintage clothes. The Camden Passage market had been officially inaugurated the 3 September 1960.

What to do:
Just walk down the street and enjoy. Be attentive to everything as it is the best place for bargains and great deals. Whether you are looking for vintage accessories or clothes or old style furniture, it is unlikely that you will leave empty handed. Are you a writer? I’m sure you will fancy a customized stamp to sign your correspondence

Don’t miss out the famous Breakfast Club, right in the middle of the market, to enjoy a real English Breakfast. As the queue is as famous as the shop, you’d better come early.

How to get there:
The market is opened on Wednesdays from 7am to 2am, Thursdays from 7am to 4pm and Saturdays from 8am to 4am. For more details, check out our map.

Located in a restored Victorian hall, this covered market offers a bit of everything and is definitely a must-visit in London. For its stalls of course, but also for its architecture.

A little history:
A market is running here since 1638, when it was only a rural area on the eastern outskirts of London. If the stalls disappeared during the time of the Commonwealth, the market has been reopened in 1682. Quite a while ago indeed…

In January 2011, Old Spitalfields Market received the award of “Best private market” by the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA). Another reason to go and find out by yourself!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The market:
Its mix of Victorian and contemporary architecture creates an atmosphere of a brand new London.

Opened 7 days a week, Old Spitalfields Market is the place for crazy shoppers and food passionates. Surrounded by some of the finest restaurants of the capital, the market is the shopping place for couples. No more arguments because Mister is fed up with clothes! He can just enjoy a drink at one of the numerous terraces located on the edges of the market stalls.

What to do:
Depending on the day, a complete different atmosphere reigns in the hall. The 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month are a special pick: the market hosts a record fair where you will find rare and collectable vinyls.

Thursday is the day to go on a treasure hunt as it is the antique market day.

On Saturdays, a themed market takes place in the hall. Although the theme changes every week, the market mainly turns into a vintage fair at this occasion.

Old Spitalfields Market offers mainly clothes during the rest of the week which makes it the perfect place for designers makers.

You will enjoy the market at its best on Sundays when it’s the most lively and you can find a bit of everything.

How to get there:
Tube stations: Liverpool Street (Hammersmith & City, Circle, Metropolitan and Central lines)
Aldgate East (Hammersmith & City, Circle and District lines)
Shoreditch High Street (London Overground)

General market stalls opened Monday to Wednesday from 10am to 5pm and Sundays from 9am to 5pm.
Antique market opened Thursdays from 9am to 5pm.
Fashion and art market opened on Fridays from 10am to 4pm.
Themed market opened on Saturdays from 11am to 5pm.

Bermondsey Square Market is dedicated to those who are passionate about antiques. And it does require a lot of passion to wake up at 4am on Fridays to go on a market.

A little history:
Now situated in the borough of Southwark, the market used to be in North London back in 1855. It was once famous for being the place where thieves could resell everything as a royal licence stated that the goods sold in that market did not have to be returned to the owner.

What to do:
As the market starts at 4am ( :$ ), you’d better get there early. According to the traders, the best time to shop is 5am. That’s when the best bargains are made. But to be honest, I have been there a couple of times around 8am and it is still a correct time to be around (unless you are a collector).

The coffee shop is somehow useful to help you waking up. The square being quite small, you will see everything in about 20mn. Talk to the traders and enjoy your day

How to get there:
10mn away walking from Borough Station. Look at the map if you want more info.

Day 2 of our London visit started pretty early in the morning, along with the typical grey and gloom

Day 2 of our London visit started pretty early in the morning, along with the typical grey and gloomy London weather. Taking the bus from Marble Arch, we went to the famous antique market of Portobello Road. Although there weren’t that many people on the way there, by the time we got to the general area, it was CROWDED. Instead of walking through the market, it felt more like I was being dragged along by the tide of people. Argh, claustrophobia.

Despite the storm of people out on the roads, the inside of the antique markets were relatively quiet and calm. I guess they would have to be, given the plethora of easily breakable and expensive items. There were lots of different items on sale, including some interesting curiosities. I was obviously enamoured with this 100+ year old clarinet, but the price tag was ridiculous. Argh…

Amidst all the expensive Victorian items though, were some cheaper items obviously targeted towards tourists who couldn’t tell the difference between a real antique cameo brooch and brooches made in a Chinese factory. Although I didn’t really buy anything, there were tons of cute stalls selling literal piles of costume jewellery and other touristy things, like “I ♥ London” mugs.

Being a doll collector though, I did buy a small hand-made wooden doll. He’s dressed in the traditional British cavalry costume

Signing off,
Marie

We all have our favorites. From early on beginning in grade school we witnessed the concept of the chosen few in witnessing or being the “teacher’s pet”. Certain bonuses or advantages were awarded ones that attained that role and we learned to apply that concept in many areas of our lives.

Even in collecting pottery we apply the “teacher’s pet” principle to the items in our collection we value the most by rewarding them the most visible display shelf. For me a few of my Rumrill vases have become “teacher’s pet and they proudly great visitors to my home in a most conspicuous place of honor.

Three Rumrill vases, c. 1938-42 (from left to right) 9″ Pale Blue Art Deco Vase, mold # H-8, $ 75.00; Miniature 4.25″ Vase with Partial Original Label, mold #A-5, $ 45.00; and 6″ Fan Five Finger Bud Vase from “Manhattan Group”, mold # 541, $100.00

Today at the Long Beach Antique Market we will be offering some of our very favorite Rumrill vases and yes they will be displayed in a very prominent location.
One of the very pleasant surprises for me in my own pottery collecting was the discovery of Beswick

One of the very pleasant surprises for me in my own pottery collecting was the discovery of Beswick Pottery. Beswick (1894-2002) was a family run business founded by James Wright Beswick with his son’s John and Gilbert, and John’s son John Ewart, they all played a part in the factories fantastic successes.

Beswick Pottery, c.1957-72 By Albert Hallam in ’57 6″ Double Handled Urn Vase, Mold # 1496-3, $80.00

The business ran from the Gold Street Works as ‘J. W. Beswick’ until about 1918. The firm gradually expanded its activities after the 1914-1918 war, in fancy pottery for the home and over-seas markets.

J. W. Beswick died in 1921 and his son in 1936. The Company was then made a Limited company – John Beswick, Ltd. created with the Managing Director, John Ewart Beswick and his Sales Director Gilbert Beswick who introduced many new pieces to the range.

Beswick Pottery, c.1959-67 by Albert Hallam in 1959 10″ Gun Metal Luster Glazed Vase, Mold # 1654, $129.00 SOLD

Arthur Gredington was appointed modeller for animals of all kinds and is well known for this superb work of accurate and realistic animals. James Hayward also contributed to the high quality pieces as decorating manager from 1934 to art Director from 1957 he designed almost 3,000 decorations, patterns and glazing.

In 1969 Beswick was sold to Royal Doulton animals continuing to produce new models but reducing the number of patterns and withdrawing many pieces. By August 1989, the decision was taken for all Beswick to be produced under the Royal Doulton back stamp.

This morning there was nothing I wanted to do less than go outside. It’s been rainy and miserable in London all week and I’ve very much enjoyed being all toasty inside! But, needs must, and with post to post I braved it into the foul grey….

Packages dutifully recorded and posted, I rewarded myself with a flat white from Loves on Gravel Lane. I’ve been wanting to try the little cafe for ages, but it’s not open at the weekends so opportunities have been few. It was busy with the City lunchers but my coffee was served quickly and to perfection.

LOVES

And next, a drop off at the charity shop (been having a sort out!) before wandering along to Old Spitalfields… I’ve been hearing about the Alternative Fashion Week going on there and so dropped in just in time to catch the daily runway show. Presented by Alternative Arts, the event runs until Saturday with a show every day at 1:15pm and a fashion market featuring some of the designers from 11am to 5pm. It’s free to get in too.

The aim of the event is to showcase the most original and creative collections by a fresh crop of new designers, promoting new talent to the press and fashion industry. It’s an international event, with over 80 designers from all over the UK and the world, as well as showcasing new models too. There’s certainly an emphasis on environmental awareness and ethical sourcing, but each collection was perfectly unique (and artfully soundtracked by the amazing The Mannequins, playing live)….. I’ve found it difficult choosing a few favourites to chat about!…..

Kensington and Chelsea college kicked off with their sculptural red dress collection, with rocky music and plenty of tatooed models. But my attention was really grabbed by George Strood, next up with a ‘Make do and mend’ collection of 40s inspired hand knits. The band beatifully backed the nest-haired models with a 40s swing track, proving their diversity fast. But Strood’s designs were not overshadowed, and the show had me hankering after the pieces on the his market stall afterwards.

George Strood

Francisco Sanchez-Canete followed with a mixture of tribal prints and clashing neon orange and blue, accompanied by a drum and bass number. But it was Rasha Swais’ play-fighting models that really got my interest next, with gorgeously cut tartan and tweed menswear in vivid reds.

Rasha Swais

Rebecca Cochrane’s collection was perhaps the most readily wearable of all those shown, with unisex shaping, drop waists and thick soled plimsoles and boots. Charlotte Smith’s Espionage Collection up next though was very much my thing, taking inspiration from women at work during World War Two, with jet printed leggings and blouses, high waisted and beautifully tailored trousers, red star patches and an awesome jumpsuit printed with “Allie” and “Enemy”.

Chloe Watson showed a witty collection devoted to penguins, with prints onto silk and over-sized fur accessories, before the University of Derby’s third years provided a cobalt blue finale whilst The Mannequins played a great rendition of Blue Monday. The hour the show took up flashed by, and I came out keen to see more (and to hear more from the wonderful band).

Third Year Final Collections from the University of Derby

Virtuously bypassing the free ice cream being handed out, I took a wander around the adjacent fashion market, finding some lovely designers to chat to. Lucky Dame’s ‘Couture Latex’ designs were an instant eye catcher, as were Katherine Tuck’s quirky prints.

George Strood Stall and the Alternative Fashion Market

Having exhausted one market, there was still plenty to see in the market hall next door. I know I harp on about Old Spitalfields Market, but it really is a brilliant place for treasure hunting. We made it to the last ‘Antique Vintage Flea Market’ held at the weekend (it’s there every Thursday from 07:30 to 5pm, plus every last Saturday of the month) but the range of stalls and contents today was far better. It was also much quieter, so I had a really good chance to chat to stall holders, and have a proper root through some of the treasures. I found two stalls crammed with old bits of jewellery at a pound a piece (I bought over a dozen old brooches and huge earrings to use as charms and for some bridal head dresses I’m planning) and another with a stack of old keys, from which I bought some Victorian and Georgian ones to make into jewellery. Oh, and because our next collecting task is for lots of mis-matched vintage cutlery (we already have a brilliant set of random glasses and china) the huge stall full of old cutlery caught my eye and will certainly see me return.

The Old Spitalfields Antique and Vintage Flea Market

By the time I’d made it round all the stalls, I realised it was far past lunch time and I was ready for a large cup of tea, so it was homeward bound from there. And it didn’t even occur to me to mind that, once I’d stepped out from under the roof of Old Spitalfields, it had started drizzling again….. I was too full of the joys of pottering about my neighbourhood to care!

The future of London’s famous Portobello Road Market as we have known it and loved it is at risk. No matter what one’s views may be on the expansion of popular chain stores into historic districts, there is no question that the authenticity of Portobello Road Market has been compromised already.

Portobello Road’s Timeline
In the heart of London’s Notting Hill within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Portobello Road has seen Saturday trading in fruit and vegetables since the mid-19th century. However, the future of the market is seriously, and sadly, at risk. Read on to learn why.

The Jubilee Market is one of the longest running in London and offers the broadest selection of antiques in the city.

A little history:
Built in 1904 by Cubitt and Howard, the Jubilee Hall was created to welcome a foreign flowers market. Located south of the square, along Tavistock Street, the market, as we know it today, is in Covent Garden for more than 20 years.

The market:
The Jubilee Market hosts a wide range of antiques stalls that offers all sorts of items on Mondays but is also the place for more general food stalls from Tuesdays to Fridays. During the weekend, the market is slightly smaller and becomes the perfect place to find arts and crafts of all kinds.

What to do:
The antique market, known for having the broadest selection of antiques in London is a must-see. You will find vintage clothes, ceramics, jewels, silverware but also books and paintings.

Don’t hesitate to go back in the days, as the atmosphere is very old fashioned. “Proper London” style guaranteed!

How to get there:
Tube station: Covent Garden (Piccadilly line)

Antique market opened Mondays from 5am to 4pm, General market opened Tuesdays to Fridays from 9.30am to 6.30pm, Arts & Crafts market opened Saturdays and Sundays from 9.30am to 5.30pm.

On Sunday I decided to make a trip to the Cambridge Antique Market. I was looking for a few new projects. I wasn’t sure exactly what those projects were yet, but hoping I would know when I saw them. Upon walking into the market, I felt pretty overwhelmed. This place is five stories, and houses over 150 vendors. They have everything you can imagine, from vintage clothes and jewelry to china and antique furniture. There is even a vendor in there who sells old sports memorabilia, which I will have to revisit around Christmas time for my father. Once I got over the initial shock of the floor to ceiling ‘goodies’, I was actually able to find some interesting things.

Antique Flask – $24

I thought this flask was pretty cool, despite the fact that it isn’t actually functioning. The silvered hammered metal is worn just enough to make it look aged, but not quite ancient. I plan on putting it on one of the shelves in my spare bedroom as an accent piece.

Golf Bookends – $18

These beauties had my husband’s name written all over them. I am a sucker for mixed materials, and I love the mix of silver on the stand and the gold golf club. Someday they will grace the shelves of his office, or sit on a shelf in his man cave. For now, their home will be on a shelf in our office. I don’t mind sharing space on the shelf for these guys.

Mirrored Bowl – $12

A good wash was all that this bowl needed to come to life. On the shelf at the store it looked old and dingy, but as you can see, now it stuns with its reflective quality as an accent in my hallway. I love it! The picture doesn’t really do it justice!

Necklace – $6

No trip to an antique market is complete without picking up a unique piece of jewelry! I found this necklace buried on a shelf with loads of other jewels. I was trilled when I saw the price – $6! I have already worn it and gotten many compliments!

That sums up all the treasures I found at the market. I would say it was a good trip, even though I didn’t find anything to makeover. I am happy with my purchases- no buyers remorse here! I am sure it won’t be the last time I visit the Cambridge Antique Market.
