This is a wonderful vintage cotton hanky with Donald Duck and his three nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie on a nautical adventure. This little piece of Disney history would look wonderful framed in a vintage frame. It is signed C.Walt Disney Productions in the lower left, and measures about 8.5″ square. Aside from a single hole, the condition is very good.

- Donald Duck comics were never banned in Finland, because the character doesn’t wear pants. That is just an urban legend. In a meeting held in Helsinki regarding youth affairs a candidate for Finland’s liberal party, Markku Holopainen, proposed that the country save money and promote fitness by replacing the Donald Duck comics it was providing to youth with sports magazines, which were cheaper at the time. The proposition was heartily approved by all of those in attendance.

- Donald Duck is the mascot of the University of Oregon.

- Donald has a star on the Hollywood Boulevard Walk of Fame.

- It has been said that Mickey Mouse represents what we should be, while Donald Duck represents what we are.

- Donald’s temperament is the one thing that stands between Donald and Daisy.

- He usually wears a sailor shirt, cap, and a red or black bow tie, but no trousers (except when he goes swimming).

- Huey, Dewey and Louie Duck are the sons of Della Duck (Donald Duck’s sister) and of her husband (who remains unknown). As identical triplets, Huey, Dewey and Louie are impossible to tell apart.

- Today, Donald Duck is recognized by people of all ages, the world over. His face appears on lunch boxes, T-shirts, and thousands of other products.

If you are an ardent antique collector and you have the taste for old radios, you would know what you can’t miss in your collection – an antique Zenith radio. Radio collectors pride over their antique Zenith radios and those who don’t have them can just envy. The first Zenith radios were built in 1923, soon after its incorporation. They then went on to produce what can be called gem of a radio set. All different types of antique Zenith radios have a charm of their own. Be it the floor model wooden chassis, or a table top or a tomb stone. Usually available in American walnut, in ebony, tan and brown apart form a few other colors, these sets made it to all households in the 1930s and 1940s. Having products ranging from about $20 to upwards of $750 back then, they catered to every class of the society.

It is not very difficult to understand the relation between pricing and the model number in antique Zenith radios. The smaller numbered models in any series usually were lesser priced with the price going up gradually with the model number. From small table tops with 5 tubes to huge 15 tubes floor models, the quality with Zenith cannot be questioned.

Looking at the models of the antique Zenith radios, almost all average Zenith brands could receive domestic and foreign broadcasts. One would find chrome grilled models in the 800-series onwards, like the 809, 829, 835 etc. Continuing with its grand black dials which gave it the elusive elegant look, they entered into the white dial region with their 807 model. It also featured multi colored dials with a black background to differentiate between the different bands.

The rarest and most elegant catch among the antique Zenith radios is their Stratosphere models. Very chic designs to meet the contemporary styles, it was a style and a status symbol. Available in 3 models, the 16-A-61, 16-A-63 and the 1000Z, these were all above 43 inches high and featured 12 inches auditorium speakers apart from small reproducers. 1000Z model had 25 of them. The 16-A-16 model has a very bold look and a sturdy stature whereas the other 2 models quite elaborately designed. While the first two models were labeled at $450 which came down to about $290 the subsequent year, the 1000Z remained at an enormous $750 through out the 4 years that it was sold.

Now, only a handful of these antique Zenith radiosremain listed with a private registry. It is expected that there should be more of these wonders surviving in some part of the world.

I actually hate the consumerism of Black Friday. So today, my mom and I spent the day cleaning out the garage and donating things to Goodwill.

I took a bunch of photographs a few days ago while playing with motion and self portraits. I have been experimenting with textures as well. I will be posting those in the next few days. This photograph is of course using textures and I used a slow shutter speed so the photo is extra soft.

We found some old cameras out in the garage today, and I of course kept them. I love them.

After all that work though, I am utterly exhausted. Tomorrow we go to get the Christmas tree and decorate the house. Hopefully I will be able to get some pictures.

Do you plan to make a vintage pocket watch collection? Do you know what it takes to maintain these rare pieces of art? Are you clueless on how to go about this kind of collection? Are you worried you might end up damaging important pieces of history, and wasting your valuable time and money? Owning these time pieces involves knowhow and experience, but is easy to learn, if your heart is truly into it. All it takes is gathering the correct information, from reliable sources. However, you might ask yourself, “Where do I start?” The answer is less complicated than you may think.

All the answers on how to maintain a vintage pocket watch may be found over the internet, but basically, this is what you have to do. Unlike conventional modern watches, these vintage watches are not water proof. Keep them out of water and moisture to avoid rust. Temperature also plays a large role in maintenance. Antique watches such as this involve monitoring room temperature to ensure they last longer in function and in value. If in any case something goes wrong, do not worry. There are professionals who perform repair and restoration, if an accident happens, or if the watch breaks down due to age.

Owning these time pieces of old will take a lot of care, if you expect their value to appreciate, or if you want to preserve the art and history in these watches. The art form passed down from generation to generation has almost been lost, and by preserving them you also preserve the knowledge. These time pieces tell more than just time; they were symbols of knowledge, sophistication, and stature in the days of their popularity. Anybody can own a luxury wristwatch, but owning a vintage pocket watch makes you a rare connoisseur.

Well, here we go! The scary prospect of a completely blank page and what to write. Mostly I'm going to blog about one project, which is selling stuff. Stuff in question happens to be a fairly eclectic collection of bits and pieces acquired by my father during his 30 odd years as an antique dealer in the UK, before he sold up and retired to Australia in the 1980s. I've been selling on eBay for a while, but for one reason and another I'm considering branching out a bit, and it occurred to me (not for the first time) that it would be useful and interesting to blog about it. Not to mention that I've always had writing in the back of my mind as a hobby (possibly paying) or future career. The technology is testing though, I've never blogged before, and some of the terminology is confusing to the uninitiated. Still, I'll probably manage to work things out. Right now I'm off to start listing the next lot on eBay - need to do some research. There is a Stationery Office notebook and some unused pencils which Dad brought home with him after his National Service, but so far I can't find any mention on Google or anywhere else of anything similar. Some of the pencils have the linked Cs which were the Utility mark, but haven't been able to find much out about them at all. I'd be pretty certain somebody collects that kind of thing, question is who?

Antique watches generally refer to mechanical watches that were made more than fifty years ago or mo

Antique watches generally refer to mechanical watches that were made more than fifty years ago or more. Antique watches are not very useful in keeping accurate track of time, and instead make good gifts or a nice piece of decoration.

The antique watch business is a multi-billion dollar business. However there are a lot of fakes out there so buying an antique watch requires careful research.

A Brief History of Time

Some knowledge of mechanical watches will help a lot in judging the approximate date of manufacture of the antique watch:

1500s Peter Henlein of Germany created the first pocket watch

1660s Christian Huygens invented the remontoire

1680s Repeating mechanism for bells and sounds patented

1700s Rubies used in watch movements

1750s Enamel used on watch dials

1760s Lever escapement invented

1800s First self winding watch invented

1840s First watch to have winding and setting through crown

1914 World War I popularizes the wristwatch

1914 First wristwatch with alarm

1926 First water proof wristwatch

1956 First watch to display day and date

1960 First watch to have scratch-proof dial

Sources of Antique Watch

Antique watches of many established companies are available such as Rolex, Omega, Universal Geneve, Angelus, Vacheron & Constantin, Seiko, Benrus, Breitling, Gruen, Zodiac, IWC, Movado, TAG Heuer, Hamilton, Ingersoll, Shakosha (Citizen watch company of Japan) Gallet, Wittnauer, Bulova etc. There are a lot of sources on the internet selling watches online. Good buys can be found at auctions and second hand markets but the authenticity of these antique watches are doubtful.

Maintenance of Antique Watch

Maintenance of an antique watch is very difficult. The parts are not easily available and antique watches cannot be repaired at all watch shops. So do make sure that the seller also guarantees their repair if the need arises. Most antique watch sellers also provide maintenance and care manuals for the antique watch. Be sure to follow the instructions.

Cost of Antique Watch

Antique watches are available anywhere between $300 to millions of dollars depending upon the make, the date of manufacture, the history of the watch and the jewels in the antique watch. The market price of the antique watch is determined by its snob appeal and social acceptance.

Antique watches make wonderful gifts and give the wearer a distinct and artistic look. Antique watches combine artistic appeal and nostalgic charm. However, antique watches are costly in general and need a lot of maintenance and care.

Let’s start the week with some inspiration! Bethan’s just stumbled across Sadie Olive, a lovely blog written by Sara Duckett, a Californian photographer. Her love of vintage lace, antiques and all things pretty means every post is a visual treat.

This makes me want to rush home and tie pink velvet ribbons around my vintage cutlery too! At the moment, we store it all in French Cassoulet tins – practical, but not half as pretty!

What a lovely start to to the week! I love the vintage scales above, and the beautiful styling in these shots. On closer inspection, it turns out Sadie Olive is not just a blog – it’s a whole empire! Sara runs three shops – she sells antiques, postcards and prints of her photographs, does graphic design and sells collectibles…is there anything she doesn’t do?! She’s also on her third blog. I’m exhausted just thinking about it. – Ellie
