Review of A Camp’s Nov. 17 show at Le Poisson Rouge on Spinner.com

A Camp is Nina Persson from the Cardigans, her husband Nathan Larson, and Niclas Frisk, and at their show last night they played with a bunch of pretty badass musicians, including ex–Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha, and members of Beirut and Antony and the Johnsons. The venue setup (tables with a two-item-per-person minimum) was awful and I totally busted my kneecaps from kneeling to take photos for eight songs, but it was a really lovely show (and my first piece for AOL’s Spinner.com, hooray)!

Not much to say on Antony and the Johnsons other than “GENIUS GENIUS OHMYGOD GENIUS.” They’ve been around for a while, but this album is honestly one of my favourites. Pitchfork has a better review than I could possibly come up with {here}, but think about transitions and steps in life as you listen to this album. You’ll see what I mean.

HEART è il nome del nuovo lavoro di Elisa, che arriva dopo ben 5 anni dal suo ultimo album d’inediti (Pearl Days) e dopo 3 dalla fortunatissima raccolta Soundtrack ‘96-’06.

14 brani, di cui un paio in italiano, una cover e due con ospiti illustri, che rappresentano un nuovo punto di partenza per la cantautrice di Monfalcone, pur rimanendo fedele al sound e alle influenze artistiche che hanno caratterizzato la sua lunga carriera.

L’album si apre con la coinvolgente Vortexes, un pop rock sostenuto dove la voce di Elisa regala i primi brividi svettando fra violini e suggestioni elettroniche. Segue l’ottima And All I Need e Anche Se Non Trovi Le Parole, uno dei brani in italiano più riusciti della cantante e sicuro tormentone radiofonico.

L’album prosegue, poi, alternando episodi rock che ci restituiscono una Elisa grintosa, come in This Knot e Your Manifesto (decisamente più riuscita la prima della seconda), ad altri – più numerosi – caratterizati da sound più delicati e sognanti, come Someone To Love e Poems By God.

Fra i brani migliori, l’intensa Mad World, cover dei Tears For Fears (qui riproposta in una versione più vicina a quella presente nella colonna sonora di “Donnie Darko”) che la cantautrice aveva già eseguito nello show Mechanical Dream e l’onirica The Big Dipper, dove Elisa riporta in primo piano l’amore per l’elettronica e le atmosfere alla Björk.

La vetta dell’album è però, senza dubbio, Forgiveness: emozionante duetto con Antony Hegarty (degli Antony and the Johnsons) dove le due voci, così diverse nel loro essere soul, si fondono cantando il grande tema del perdono.

Non tutto funziona in questo album: c’è qualche lungaggine di troppo (sia nella scaletta che nella durata di alcune canzoni, come ad esempio Lisert che resta soffocata dagli oltri 6 minuti di durata), l’orrendo episodio di Ti Vorrei Sollevare (primo singolo con Giuliano Sangiorgi dei Negramaro di cui vi ho parlato QUI)  e il progetto non sembra essere pienamente focalizzato nella sua interezza.

Tuttavia, questo Heart è un album solido e coerente: la conferma, se ce ne fosse stato ancora bisogno, delle grandi capacità di Elisa come compositrice ed interprete.  Un termine, quello scelto come titolo, davvero azzeccatissimo: qui il cuore c’è davvero. E palpita forte.

Ci è arrivata oggi la triste notizia che nell’ultimo, probabilmente inutile* album dell’ormai pausinizzatissima Elisa compare Antony Hegarty. Per la signorina Toffoli, questo featuring (nel brano “Forgiveness”) è forse uno dei momenti più luminosi della carriera. Sempre che se ne renda conto. Del resto, anche lei fa parte di quella categoria di artisti che sanno passare con disinvoltura da collaborazioni con produttori internazionali eccellenti (Howie B, Glen Ballard) ai più infimi figuri di casa nostra (Giuliano Sangiorgi, Ligabue, il Maestro Tommassini). Ci sarebbe anche da citare quella volta in cui disse no a Venditti – che coraggiosa! – ma poi ristabilì il suo livello di mediocrità facendosi scrivere qualche verso da Zucchero.

Ma torniamo ad Antony. Ebbene, ve ne sarete accorti, anche lui è sfaccettatissimo! Come illustrato nel grafico seguente (lo trovate più grosso qui), nel corso degli ultimi sei anni, Antony ha collezionato un bel po’ di collaborazioni (e non le ho nemmeno inserite tutte). La sua assurda parabola parte in grande stile, ci regala alcune vere perle,  guadagna prestigiosi premi… E poi scade nel ridicolo.

Sembrava andare tutto bene finché non compare un’imprevista variabile, una rovinosa mutazione, una suina creativa. La chiameremo “Antony’s Stivale Anomaly”: appena il cantante si avvicina alla nostra penisola, sfiora il suicidio artistico. I primi sintomi di débacle appaiono nel 2008, anno in cui Frengo Battiato invita Antony a cantare “Del Suo Veloce Volo”, ovvero una sua b-side completamente riscritta in italiano per Fleurs 2. Con la scusa che tanto Antony la nostra lingua non la mastica, Frengo si burla di lui usandolo come canale per raccontare un suo curioso aneddoto:

Leggendo la mano di un amico avevo visto la data della sua prossima morte. Mi auguravo fosse una sciocchezza. E, invece, purtroppo è andata proprio così.

Immaginiamoci Battiato in tenuta da Divino Otelma (magari accompagnato dal fedele sidekick Sgalambro travestito da Mago Oronzo) mentre predice la morte di questo povero disgraziato entrando in contatto con lo spirito di chissà quale pensatore della dinastia Ming. Frequentare queste fattucchiere siciliane non avrà certamente giovato al fragile Antony, che infatti s’impelaga poco dopo in un kitschissimo esperimento di marketing per la Sony. La Lavazza gli fa cantare “Nessun Dorma” e condisce il tutto con un terribile servizio fotografico in cui l’artista viene ritratto come una vecchia zia eccentrica (o, ancora meglio, una Contessa Miseria, volendo citare un’altra siciliana) che m’immagino a leggere i fondi delle tazzine di caffè in una casa piena di ninnoli e acquasantiere. Insomma, sarà che su di me l’opera ha sempre avuto l’effetto di un clistere con l’acido muriatico, ma di questo “progetto artistico” se ne poteva onestamente fare a meno.

Ed eccoci giunti alla data odierna, non certo la più fortunata sul curriculum di Antony, dato che l’attempata maitresse dal caschetto d’oro gli ha dato il benvenuto nel suo esclusivo bordello Sugar. Si riconferma la Stivale Anomaly per il nostro beniamino.

Antony, dacci retta, sta’ lontano dal tricolore, evitalo come la peste. Vieni giusto a fare due concerti d’estate e, se vedi avvicinarsi un rassicurante tipo brizzolato, scappa più veloce che puoi.

There is a singer from Denmark currently climbing up the German radio and iTunes charts, her name is Aura Dione, a 23 year old pretty singer from Copenhagen. Her album “Columbine” was a huge success in Denmark and she had a number 1 single with “Song For Sophie”. The hard working girl came out of nowhere and now she is one of Denmark`s biggest stars. People compare her with artists like Feist, Gwen Stefanie, Shania Twain or even Tracy Chapman, she mixes folk with electro, a bit of country here and pop and dub there, always nicely arranged.

She wrote a song about gay icon Antony (Antony And The Johnsons), another one is how she felt when  someone thought she is a prostitute. Her current single is the sweet “I will Love You Monday (365)” with this cute video:

The album will be out in Germany on November, 27th.

5. Eels – Hombre Lobo
Whilst it didn’t do that well, Eels can’t really do much wrong in my eyes. Heartfelt and wonderfully lo-fi, I’d say this was one of their many bests.

4. Grizzly Bear – Veckatimest
Great album! Creative, and a little bit different, this is an album of beautifully crafted alt-pop songs.

3. Antony and the Johnsons – The Crying Light
Progressed on from I am a bird now whilst still retaining everything that made that album great. Haunting and at times uncomfortably fragile, but always captivating.

1. John Frusciante – The Empyrean
This has become on of my favourite albums of all time. Everything about it is perfect; pornography for my ears. Experimental but oddly accessible to fans of all types of psychadelic rock. Frusciante also produced the album himself, and he did such an amazing job. The rich tapestry of instruments all have room to breathe, his vocals have never been better and his guitar playing is, well, exactly what you’d expect from one the greatest living rock guitarists.

4. Fleet Foxes – Mykonos
Fleet Foxes aren’t a band I’ve really understood the hype about. They’re good, but perhaps not all they’re cracked up to be. I love the singers voice though, and it is used beautifully on this song. The second half reminds me a lot of Stairway to Heaven, in a very good way.

3. Regina Spektor – Blue Lips
Released as a double a-side with ‘Laughing With’, this song features a stunning vocal perfomance and very catchy melody. It also has some fantastic lyrics. “He stumbled into faith and though/God this is all there is”

2. Antony and the Johnsons – Aeon
An epic builder. I dare anyone not to be moved at the key moment Antony Hegarty’s yells “Hold that man I love SO MUCH!”

1. Grizzly Bear – While you wait for the others
I don’t want to over hype it, but I would almost call this the perfect song. Great sound, drowned in reverb. You can hear a Brian Wilson influence as vocal harmonies are used to full effect. It also has one of my favourite vocal melodies, perhaps ever.

So there it is. It shall probably change. For now, thanks 2009 for these great songs.

Tenho saudades de me aninhar no aconchego do sofá num qualquer dia preguiçoso de inverno e de me deleitar com o consumo de música no formato DVD. Deixei de o fazer há muito, mas o que é possível antecipar com os vídeos disponíveis do recente Abbey Road de Anthony and The Johnsons deixa-me com água na boca. Finalmente o belíssimo “The crying light”, que dá nome ao último álbum, ganha forma em vídeo. Perdi os concertos em Maio deste ano no nosso país apenas porque a agenda profissional não o permitiu e o bom das versões em DVD é trazermos os nossos idolatrados para casa e podermos desfrutá-los as vezes que quisermos. Gosto do ambiente cru do estúdio, de poder ver os instrumentos que replicam ou recriam os temas, gosto de ver o Antony em si – a sua linguagem gestual sempre que não toca no piano e a forma como canta, impressionante o domínio do canto em si. E neste tema, que me leva sempre às atmosferas de uns This Mortal Coil, adoro a força da expressão de um “I was born to adore you”. Para quando o DVD?

These are some things that I love (lately).  Fickle, fickle, fickle.

• Turning non-verbs into verbs.  Example: zen + ing = zenning, or the active process of trying to achieve zen.
• Antony and the Johnsons.  Try NOT emoting sloppily whilst listening to “Paddy’s Gone.”  Try.  I mean it.  Try.
• Saying “whilst” and other words that are not oft used in every day conversation.  It’s whimsical.  See?  Three right there.
• Arguing with Zeitgeist the Movie.
• Not arguing with Zeitgeist the Movie.
• The fact that I understand nothing should be taken at face value and that you cannot or should not believe everything you see, hear, read.  Probe!  Question! Form your own opinions!  Eat pizza!
• Wondering why “cannot” is a compound word but “should not” isn’t. Doesn’t it make more sense to either go with “cannot” and ”shouldnot” or “can not” and “should not”?  Contractions and compound words are weird.  It seems pretty arbitrary how They decided upon the English-language rules of writing.  Methinks “They” were playing a really mean, long trick on us. “Dude, we should tell people  ”i before e except after c” just to see if they’ll do it!”

I recently discovered that Antony Hegarty, of Antony and the Johnsons, reinterpreted the much beloved Italian aria Nessun Dorma with the Roma Sinfonietta Orchestra which you can listen to or download here. His interpretation being absolutely beautiful on recording, I was hoping to find a video of him performing it live on youtube. But rather than finding Antony, I found Greg Pritchard and afterwards had the same thought as 1branman1986 on the comments page – “he must have dropped his testicles at some point on the way to the stage.”

The contrast between his rockstar fashion and his vocal sensibilities is interesting but just makes you tilt your head and go, “hmm… that doesn’t seem right.” I guess that’s the beauty of it. I hope he finds a productive and artistic way in using his voice rather than just be a freak show to make a career, never the less, this performance was pretty fun to watch and to listen to.

Apparently Antony Hegarty loves a good cup of Joe. So much in fact that he is endorsing Italian coffee brand Lavazza by recording the aria “Nessum Dorma” (“None Shall Sleep”) from Giacomo Puccini’s opera Turandot backed by the Roma Sinfonietta Orchestra.

This performance truly highlights Hegarty’s voice and presents it in a way that most can appreciate what amazing pipes he really has. Every person that I let listen to The Crying Light tends to cringe and scoff but if I played them “Epilepsy Is Dancing” (embedded below) and after they were done scoffing played them “Nessum Dorma” they would never guess that it was the same performer. Not because Hegarty changes his vocal fluctuations or that tell tale vibrato but because this is the voice that people associate with opera, not baroque-pop.

Ghost, retrato de Antony Hegarty

El autorretrato de Antony Hegarty se ha solapado con el de su bisabuela muerta por tuberculosis. El cuadro se llama Ghost y la oscuridad interior del artista se hace patente en su propia mirada que intuye que no es suya, como tampoco su cuerpo ni, tal vez, su voz.  El médium no se puede asomar al espejo sin descubrir el abismo entre lo que descubre adentro y el reflejo que le golpea y fustiga. El alma femenina atrapada lanza un grito de horror que estremece los oídos.

Antony sostiene una esperanza de que haya alguien que cuide de él cuando muera, alguien que deje su corazón libre. Hay un fantasma en el horizonte cuando va a dormir. Está asustado entre la luz y ningún lugar. No quiere ser abandonado allí. La presencia desea que vaya al lecho si él cae a sus pies esta noche. Y así dejar reposar su pensamiento atormentado. No soporta permanecer para siempre en aguas divididas, ser anegado o llovido por el cielo. Alguien tiene que cuidarle cuando muera.

Su historia de mujer habla de la aniquilación y de los pechos cortados. Un agujero negro en el amor. Y su útero, un océano lleno de rabia y dolor. Los dedos acarician el piano en un homenaje a la belleza amputada que clama por un destello de pupilas en el que se pueda iluminar.

Es el deseo por crecer convertido en una hermosa mujer. Con paciencia, pues ahora no es más que un niño con un sueño que parte de lo más recóndito inexplicable. Sabe que dentro de él hay una matriz que se mantiene pura y que un día se llenará. Su poder interior y la verdad  no le permitirán sucumbir.

El hombre es el pequeño que se abre a la vida. Añora algo más que un día triste y clama por una nueva existencia. Pide perdón por desear la libertad de su espíritu. La derrota viene en una gélida ola de vergüenza y culpabilidad.  Ha llegado desde la oscuridad, donde la sombra hace vencedor al árbol tenebroso. Ha salido de allí y se hinca de rodillas para suplicar indulgencia y ser bendecido. Porque la debilidad ha germinado y brotará bosque en su camino hacia la madurez, condenado en un cuerpo atroz.

Canta a su hermana, nacida inocente, llena de necesidad. Con la que alguna vez fue cómplice y otras cruel. A quien pidió en las noches de miedo que  le velara. La que quiso adentrarse en los lugares temidos y conoció su mundo,  protegida por su naturaleza de bondad. A ella se fue pareciendo cada vez más a lo largo del tiempo. En su forma de reír o de sentir dolor. A la que desea que todos sus sueños se hagan realidad. Como los suyos propios.

Se hace las preguntas sin respuesta: ¿Qué puedo hacer si el ave tiene que morir? ¿Qué puedo hacer si es tan débil para volar? ¿Qué puedo hacer cuando me llama por mi nombre? Grita: Mamá, ayúdame a vivir porque no sé cómo soportarlo.

El amor le llega cuando descubre unos ojos que se desbordan como el mar. Entonces sucede la necesidad de aferrarse a las insinuaciones, las pequeñas señales de la devoción. Hacen mella los puños, conoce lo que está fuera del sentimiento supremo, el látigo que somete a la rendición. Siente el fuego en la mirada de quien no le ama y le carboniza el corazón.

Corre el peligro de sucumbir. Siente el frío y se congela. Está girando en el juego del corazón roto. Dispuesto, a la espera, como un perro que añora calor. Nació viejo, con sangre envenenada. No fue mujer y no sabe hacia donde ir. Cae en una espiral de hielo, miedo y muerte.

Un predicador anuncia la resurrección, el cuerpo descansa en el cementerio y el alma encontró a Jesús. Estuvo buscando sus alas, con su corazón en las manos, y las encontró. Se reencarnó en un ave  del cielo: una mujer pájaro, majestuosa al volar.

Love is often placed by some of my favorite artists in either one of the two ends of the relationship continuum: ecstatic joy or unavoidable pain. Both depictions please me immensely.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about this issue, and Antony’s lyrics in Epilepsy is Dancing speak straight to my heart:

Joan Wasser, alias Joan as Police Woman, visita la Sala Malandar -ver mapa- de Sevilla este miércoles 7 de octubre. Para quien no la conozca, diremos que esta chica, que llegó a tocar en la orquesta sinfónica de la Universidad de Boston, puede enorgullecerse de poseer una magnífica capacidad para el soul y que además está avalada por su trabajo junto a personajes como Rufus Wainright, Antony and the Johnsons o el desaparecido Jeff Buckley.

Após algumas chances perdidas, consegui, há pouco mais de uma semana, assistir a uma apresentação de Cibelle. Uma pena que ela, residindo em Londres desde 2002, faça tão raras visitas a este lado de baixo do Equador. Quando ainda não conhecia Cibelle direito, me perguntava por que raios tanto falavam sobre ela. Hoje – e, principalmente, após vê-la ao vivo pela primeira vez – percebo que ela merece bem mais. Poderia dizer que ela é a melhor cantora brasileira dessa nova geração de vozes femininas. É pouco. Cibelle é mais que isso; uma artista criativa, ousada e cativante. E, como mostrou neste seu “live programming show”, Cibelle é também uma banda inteira.

É que este não foi um show comum da cantora paulistana. Como parte da série Influências, promovida pelo Sesc, Cibelle subiu ao palco do auditório da unidade Vila Mariana – prédio que ela viu ser construído, como disse à platéia – não para apresentar seu setlist usual, mas para interpretar, solitária, canções que marcaram a sua formação musical. Em meio a um suntuoso cenário-instalação produzido pelo artista plástico Rick Castro, encontravam-se dois microfones, uma guitarra, um surdo (ou algum instrumento de percussão semelhante), sintetizadores, um laptop, um batalhão de pedais de efeitos e, no centro, apenas Cibelle, fazendo todos os instrumentos soarem ao mesmo tempo. Para isso, a cada número, a cantora sampleava, ali na hora, alguns compassos de cada som que iria utilizar e depois os reproduzia de modo contínuo, mixados. Sobre essas bases programadas ao vivo (daí o nome que se dá ao show), a voz indecorosa de Cibelle vinha completar a mágica, transformando tudo aquilo num espetáculo de hipnotismo.

A outra particularidade do show, o repertório, retratou bem o mosaico de estilos que sempre caracterizou Cibelle. Como é notório em seus álbuns, as influências da cantora são as mais diversas possíveis. De Bowie a Caymmi. De Björk a Xuxa. Sim, Xuxa. Em um dos muitos momentos de descontração do show, Cibelle encarnou a apresentadora global, em sua fase mais trash, e fez um cover moderno e escrachado de “Meu Cãozinho Xuxo”. Pura tiração de sarro. Em seguida, poderia aparecer tanto uma “Cantiga” da Bahia, quanto uma emocionante releitura de “Lá Fora Tem”, faixa do primeiro disco do Cidadão Instigado. Tudo interpretado à maneira bem peculiar de Cibelle, explorando ao máximo toda aquela parafernalha sonora que a cincurdava, para dar uma nova roupagem a cada canção. Ainda surgiriam fantásticas versões de “Lua, Lua, Lua”, de Caetano, “All Is Full Of Love”, de Björk (uma das melhores), “Hope There’s Someone”, de Antony and the Johnsons, e até uma homenagem ao recém-falecido Patrick Swayze, com “Love Is Strange”, da trilha do filme Dirty Dancing – aqui num “funk cover”.

Sem dúvida, um dos melhores shows nacionais que assisti recentemente. De uma artista que provavelmente está entre as cinco melhores coisas da nossa música que conheci nesta década que vai chegando ao fim. E os “anos 2010″ já começarão bem, com o lançamento do terceiro disco de Cibelle, o Sonja Khallecallon y Los Stroboscopicus Luminous (sim, o nome é bizarro). O trabalho contará com participações de Fernando Catatau (Cidadão Instigado), Pupillo (Nação Zumbi), Owen Clark (Hot Chip), Sam Genders (Tunng), Apollo9 e, como co-produtor, Damian Taylor, que também está cuidando no próximo álbum de Björk. É esperar, que vem coisa boa. E torcer para que ela retorne em breve.
