Though there is not a lot of cold weather in Florida, I’ve stumbled onto some albums that are perfect for those who live in a place that has more than two seasons (hot and not so hot).

Bon Iver – For Emma, Forever Ago: This is a no-brainer since the band’s name translates to Good Winter.  It’s a haunting, beautiful album that you should listen from front to back.

Death Cab For Cutie – Transatlanticism: No matter what these guys make, Transatlanticism will always been their magnum opus.  Hearing the title song live punches you in the stomach then asks for make up sex with your tearducts.

Counting Crows – August and Everything After: This is a band that peaked with their first album then went to utter hell (except for “Long December”).  However, this is another perfect album that needs to be listened to from front to back (yes, even “Mr. Jones”)

The Cure – Disintergration: Yeah I went there.  Yeah, if you don’t feel anything after listening to it, you have no soul.

The Twilight Singers – Twilight As Played By The Twilight Singers: Greg Dulli is one interesting guy.  On one hand, he’s really obsessed with being a lothario and a private detective.  On the other hand, he’s crafted some compelling music with three different bands (The Afghan Whigs, Twilight Singers, and The Gutter Twins).  This is another beautiful album that would go well with dying leaves or six inches of snow.

Picture this, you’re sitting on the edge of your bed late at night. You take off your shoes but you just can’t seem to get your socks off. Perhaps it’s too dark. Perhaps you’re too drunk. Perhaps you’re not wearing socks. Perhaps they’re too tight and small. Perhaps they have one of those heavy duty elastics in the top that cut off your blood circulation and leave marks on your legs for hours. It could be anything really, my mind reels with the possible reasons. You clearly need to have your socks blown off. I have the solution. Listen to Antony sing opera classic Nessun Dorma here. To my shame, even though he won the Mercury Prize all the way back in 2005, I’ve only just got round to listening to Antony & The Johnsons. Even that happened purely by chance when he and his current band turned up on the Channel 4 show Live at Abbey Road last Friday. Within a few days of being blown away while watching that, however, I had familiarised myself with most of his back catalogue, and decided that he was a musical genius – a modern day Bach.

Now, I’m pretty fussy about my music. There are a lot acts I like, but only about four or five that I truly love. The members of this prestigious latter category are distinguishable by the fact that, in spite of hours and hours of listening, I have never grown bored or indifferent to their music (or lyrics) and, even after the hundredth or so listen to a particular track, in it still hear something new and fresh and interesting. I have a sneaking suspicion that Antony & The Johnsons may eventually sneak into this category, as his music has a transcendental quality and a melodic and harmonic richness that seems unlikely to get old. This is only a hunch, though, as I could hate him in a few weeks.

Buddy Guy, nord-americà, per mi el millor bluesman de tots els temps. No tan sols té un so i una tècnica molt personals i desbordants de talent musical sinó que té una veu potent i versàtil. Mestre de mestres, sap transmetre energia sigui en cançons molt potents així com en temes calmadíssims. La meva cançó preferida de Buddy Guy és I go crazy.

Bobby McFerrin, nord-americà, és un vocalista amb influències del jazz complet, dinàmic, és un  experimentat experimentador i improvisador. A la seva veu li ha fet fer tot el que ha pogut i més, acompanyant-se de autopercussió. A més, ha acompanyat a grans artistes com Chick Corea – un monstre, també – i l’Richard Bona, entre d’altres. La meva cançó preferida – en aquest cas una versió – de Bobby McFerrin és Blue bossa, interpretada junt amb Chick Corea.

Stevie Ray Vaughan, nord-americà, és per mi el millor guitarrista de la història per tenir l’estil més ric i potent que he sentit mai. També és el meu bluesman blanc preferit, tot i que el seu estil tingui tan a veure amb el rock. Fou una bomba imparable – morí el 1990 amb 35 anys -, gran improvisador amb la guitarra i bon cantant, amb un timbre radiant. La meva cançó preferida de STV – també versió, d’Otis Rush – és All your love (I miss loving).

Antony Hegarty, anglès, és un cantant i pianista de màxima sensibilitat emocional, característica que expressa amb la música, junt a The Johnsons, la seva banda. Les seves cançons són del més potent que es pot aconseguir amb tan pocs decibels i notes. Tot i desafinar és una gran referència per a molts cantants i músics, ja que aconsegueix transmetre una sensibilitat anormal amb un estil molt personal. La meva cançó preferida d’Antony & The Johnsons és Hope there’s someone.

I per acabar.

Jari Mäenpää, finlandès, és ex-membre d’Ensiferum i fundador de Wintersun. És per mi el major exponent del death metal melòdic, una de les branques del heavy més populars actualment. Va fer el primer treball de Wintersun, de títol homònim, només acompanyat amb un bateria i assumint els papers de dues guitares, baix i veus; amb tot, va fer un dels àlbums més aclamats en molts anys dins del panorama heavy. Els seus guturals aguts són nets, molt potents i amb molt de caràcter i intenció. El domini que té de la guitarra és anormal i és capaç de fer solos impossibles mentre canta. És un perfecte compositor i front-man, comparable amb Chuck Schuldiner, fundador i front-man de Death i pioner del death metal. La meva cançó preferida de Wintersun és Beyond the dark sun.

I doncs, quins són els teus 5 músics?

Gisteren een exclusieve showcase kunnen bijwonen ter ere van het opstarten van Instant Jazz, de online winkel waarmee Tony Verstraete onlangs begon en waarmee hij fungeert als leverancier en distributeur van heel wat free jazz, avant-garde en aanverwanten. Of, zoals hij het zelf verwoordde, “moeilijke ketelmuziek”, wat het nog steeds is in de ogen van heel wat mensen, zelfverklaarde muziekliefhebbers incluis. Wat er ook van zij: de man is intensief bezig met z’n project en dat kan enkel aangemoedigd worden.

Op het programma: drie concerten van vier mensen, met de nadruk op snaarinstrumenten. Bassist Peter Jacquemyn (foto) mocht de spits afbijten met een soloconcert. De man, die er tevens een carrière als beeldend kunstenaar op nahoudt, speelde in het verleden al met enkele kanonnen van de free jazz en vrije improvisatie (waaronder monsterlong Peter Brötzmann, drummer Tony Oxley, pianist Fred Van Hove en stemkunstenaar Phil Minton) en gooide z’n volledige imposante lichaam in de strijd met het grootste instrument. Die fysieke benadering van het instrument is meteen ook het meest opvallend. Of het nu een gevolg is van persoonlijke voorkeur, ervaring met andere kunstvormen of het feit dat de man autodidact is; z’n benadering is direct en lijfelijk. Snaren worden hard, zelfs bruut, gewrongen en samengeknepen, de strijkstok werd als een wapen aangewend en de meest uiteenlopende geluiden gecreëerd.

Hij experimenteerde later ook met zijn kenmerkende twee strijkstokken, wrong een metalen blikje tussen de snaren om zijn sound te manipuleren, knelde het instrument tussen z’n benen alsof het een te temmen hengst was. Het eerste deel van zijn performance was een straf staaltje van vrije improvisatie. Voor het tweede deel werd hij bijgestaan door ene Pierre Michel (voor wie al eens een free jazz-optreden bijwoonde: de kerel met de baard die steevast postvat op de eerste rij met z’n camera in aanslag) op zang. De man is geen Minton, daarvoor ontbreekt het hem wat aan bereik en de mogelijkheid tot het voortbrengen van onmenselijke geluiden, maar het leverde niettemin een aparte dialoog op met een paar geslaagde momenten.

Celliste Julia Kent is vooral bekend van haar rol bij Antony & The Johnsons. Haar solomuziek mist om voor de hand liggende redenen het theatrale drama van haar broodheer, al was de nostalgie en schoonheid waarvan haar muziek doordrongen was onmiskenbaar die van de androgyne figuur. De techniek die ze hanteerde had amper verder verwijderd kunnen zijn van die van Jacquemyn, met haar gebruik van ingenieus op elkaar gestapelde loops en weemoedige melodielijnen die zo opgevist leken uit een smaakvolle soundtrack bij een arthouse-film. Na een half uurtje viel op dat de stukken steeds hetzelfde procédé volgden en nu en dan kreeg je het gevoel dat de muziek wat diepgang miste. Toch bleef het een absolute streling voor het oor.

Rechtstreeks aangekomen van Zaventem: het duo Jessica Pavone & Mary Halvorson (foto), lievelingen van de Amerikaanse avant-garde, protégés van Sint Anthony Braxton en onlangs een prima album uitgebracht (Thin Air), dat een compromisloze weg bewandelt tussen free folk, improvisatie, pop en jazz. Niet bepaald agressief of radicaal vervreemdend, maar toch heel apart, met songs die abrupt eindigen, passages die moeilijk zitten wringen, plots opduikende en verdwijnende dissonante momenten en meisjesachtige harmonieën die soms moedwillig amateuristisch klinken. Ze pikten een aantal songs uit het recentste album, maar ook een paar oudere, allen verbonden door een zelfde grilligheid. Terwijl Halvorson zich op de achtergrond hield, leek het wel alsof Pavone, die het woord voerde, niet haar beste dag kende, met weinigzeggende bindteksten en hier en daar een zuinige glimlach. Het concert sloot aan bij de idiosyncratische aanpak van het album, al had ik iets meer inleving en spontaniteit verwacht.

Dat geldt ook voor de collectieve improvisatie van de vier muzikanten die als kers op de taart fungeerde. Op zo’n moment wordt het ook duidelijk wat een gapende afstand terug te vinden is tussen de verschillende achtergronden en werkwijzen. Is de improvisatie, de muziek van het moment, van het hier en nu, iemand als Jacquemyn op het lijf geschreven, dan kan iemand als Kent duidelijk niet zo goed schermen met spontane ideeën. Halvorson bood dapper weerwerk en Pavone leek te wachten tot het voorbij was. Jacquemyn liet het niet aan z’n hart komen en stal de show.

Wie Halvorson & Pavone aan het werk wil zien, krijgt donderdag 29/10 daartoe de kans, als ze samen met Huntsville in de Vooruit staan.

R: Y no porque se haya engordado unos 150 kilos. No. Más bien porque Antony Hegarty ha hecho realidad por fin uno de sus sueños más húmedos… y, de paso, uno de los nuestros. Que sí, que el amigo de los Johnsons por fin se ha decidido a cantar ópera pura y dura, que es algo que todos sabíamos que le pegaba más que los pelucones y el maquillaje a granel. Los culpables, en esta ocasión, han debido ser los chicos del departamento de “haz realidad el sueño de un niño” de Lavazza, que han proporcionado todos los medios posibles para que Antony ponga voz a Nessun Dorma, conocidísima aria perteneciente a la ópera Turandot de Puccini. Todo orquestado por The Roma Sinfonietta Orchestra. ¿Alguien era capaz de pedir algo más? Total, que para poder escuchar la versión del hombre empeñado en parecerse a una señora mayor, lo único que tienes que hacer es entrar en la web de Lavazza, registrarte y decidir si quieres escucharla o descargarla (que, por cierto, en la versión de descarga viene con una portada extrañísima pero que tiene su punto). También puedes ver el video que ponemos a continuación, pero entonces tendrás que soportar tres minutos de la visión de una foto particularmente inquietante. Mi consejo al departamento de “está bien hacer realidad los sueños de los niños pero nosotros estamos aquí para ganar dinero” de Lavazza es el siguiente: aprended del ejemplo de Radiohead y dad la posiblidad a la gente de pagar lo que crea que vale la canción. Con lo recaudado, por favor, grabad el Turandot entero con la voz de Antony. Los niños del mundo entero (conmigo y los fabricantes de pelucas incluídos) os lo agradeceremos.

Schande oh schande dat we hen eind vorig jaar zijn vergeten te vermelden in ons rijtje ‘concerten van 2008′. Daar hoorde hun concert in het Casino van Houthalen, tijdens die koude eerste februaridag gezien de kwaliteit ervan zéker thuis. We maken het een klein beetje goed door hier aan te kondigen dat ze nu een nieuwe derde cd uit hebben, die ‘Hilfe kommt’ heet.

Hun debuutcd ‘Pursued sinners’ (2005) ga je wellicht niet zo makkelijk meer op de kop kunnen tikken, maar o.a. ‘Blue girl’ was het bewijs dat deze cd al een pareltje was. Opvolger ‘Moments of dejection or despondency’ (2007) bevestigde alleen maar hun kwalitatief hoogstaand niveau. ‘Arid song’ is bv. de openingssong van deze cd.

Op hun nieuwe cd zijn ze naar mijn idee een stuk toegankelijker geworden. Af en toe moest ik denken aan Zita Swoon, toevallig ook residerend in Antwerpen. De zangstem van Gregory Frateur, ooit nog in het achtergrondkoor bij Daan, zal menigeen wellicht afschrikken, maar het valt dit keer wonderwel mee. Iedereen legt wel eens de link met Antony & The Johnsons, maar  Antony is helaas dan weer geen spek voor mijn bek.

‘Carry on’ is de allereerste single uit ‘Hilfe kommt’. Vrijwel alle nummers zijn opgebouwd volgens hetzelfde stramien om hierna langzaam uit te monden in een soort van climax. Deze cd bewijst dat Dez Mona meer is dan de unieke stem van Gregory Frateur alleen, maar dat ook zijn begeleidingsgroep een straf musicerend geheel vormt. Wij waren al overtuigd, nu jullie nog!

poor positive negativity, i’ve been ignoring you a bit. since the start of my new job description and the work blog that comes with it, i have been working a lot more. also i’ve been trying to eek out the last bit of summer fun with outside activities, t:ba events, movies and general socializing.

i’m well into the ‘c’s of my a-z project, today i listened to eight different versions of “crazy in love”. most by antony & the johnsons, some by beyonce. they are both equally great and i could have listened to many more versions easily.

While the inspiration for the title of this piece may seem obvious, it is actually named for one of my favourite Antony & the Johnsons songs. The titles of my work are typically some sort of musical reference.

Manchester-based music pluggers Ask Me PR scoop the regional radio and TV account for the Barclaycard Mercury Prize for the 16th year running.

North west music fans may be disappointed at the absence of regional bands in this year’s Mercury music prize list of nominees, but there is one Manchester-based member of the UK music industry that’s been quietly winning with annual award since 1994. And that’s Ask Me PR!

From M-People’s 1994 win with Elegant Slumming, Badly Drawn Boy in 2000 through to local heroes and last year’s winners Elbow, Ask Me PR have been charged with making sure all shortlisted albums and the competition itself are featured on regional radio. No mean feat considering that from Cornwall to Orkney, and Norwich to Aberystwyth there’s around 400 radio stations to service!

Ask Me PR’s managing director, Liam Walsh: “We’re extremely proud of our long association with this prestigious competition.

“There have been many highlights over the years. Apart from all the great Manchester bands that have won, seeing Antony and the Johnsons claim the prize was a very special moment.

“Though it’s not all been fun, glitz and glamour. When the phenomenal PJ Harvey won and accepted her prize from NYC it was the day of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre. We’d heard what had happened on the way down to London and it was naturally a sombre rather than celebratory evening.”

Ask Me PR’s skill in gaining national and regional broadcast exposure for emerging pop talent is no secret among major record labels and independent music managers trying to break new acts into a highly competitive and crowded market place. The likes of The Killers, Oasis, Bjork, Moby, Doves, Prince and Badly Drawn Boy are amongst the long list of artists to have all used Ask Me’s services on their way to the big time.

Rinko Kikuchi y Sergi López

Los últimos días de vacaciones Victor Ziegler ha estado especialmente reflexivo, pareciera que se esta preparando para afrontar la síndrome post-vacacional. Atendiendo a su estado de ánimo se decidió a ir al cine a ver ‘Map of the Sounds of Tokyo’, la nueva película de Isabel Coixet. En vistas de la opinión de la crítica Ziegler pensó que en un momento como este el film le podría ir como anillo al dedo. 

Ziegler acertó. A pesar de ser un drama la película transcurre con asombrosa amabilidad y sensibilidad durante todo su metraje. Si Ziegler tuviera que destacar un par de cosas del film se decidiría por la extraordinaria fotografía combinada con una excelente banda sonora, así como por una escena de alto voltaje erótico en un hotel del amor que le resultó conmovedora.

A Ziegler no le ha gustado la voz que el propio Sergi López ha puesto en la versión en castellano (no ha tenido oportunidad de verla en versión original). La dicción del actor deja mucho que desear, parece como si se doblara a desgana.

De vuelta  a casa Victor Ziegler ha comprobado con éxito que la fantástica pieza ‘One Dove’ de Antony & The Johnsons incluida en el tramo final de la película está colgada en Spotify. Ziegler no ha desaprovechado la oportunidad de disfrutar de esta canción sentado en su butaca antes de irse a la cama.

Ryan Adams – The Shadowlands

Det er ganske enkelt en af de sørgeligste sange der er lavet… Fuldstændig enkelt komponeret, men med en lyrik og en produktion der rammer så dybt, at det er svært at sige hvad der dog kunne være gjort anderledes. Anmelderne var ellers ikke så tossede med Love is Hell EP’erne, men for denne skribent, står de altså, som to fremragende EP’er.

Antony & the Johnsons (feat. Rufus Wainwright) – What Can I Do?

Det er fra Antony & the Johsons andet album, og igen er det altså et virkelig rammende nummer. Det handler såmænd bare om en lille fugl, men med så meget mere mellem linjerne. Derudover er nummeret et af de korteste numre på albummet, der sjovt nok også hedder I Am A Bird Now, men samtidig et af de, ifølge undertegnede, bedste numre.

Cat Power – Names

Et nummer fra den fantastiske You Are Free plade. Nummeret er helt gennemført enkelt. Blot klaver og sang. Klaveret bliver naturligvis kun spillet på de sorte tangenter, altså alle de ’skæve’ toner. Og det er i særdeleshed også nogle virkelig sørgelige eksistenser vi i hvert vers, stifter bekendtskab med.

Jeg håber ikke at det tager overhånd med de sørgelige sange på disse kanter, synes blot lige at de skulle deles, for på trods af deres sørgelige budskaber – så er de virkelig fantastiske sange.

I can’t stop listening to the album “I Am A Bird Now” by Antony & the Johnsons. He is unlike anything out there… I’m not saying he is for everyone, because I don’t think he is. But his voice really tells a story… everything has added weight and meaning when he sings it.

When the horns come in on Fistful of Love… thank you.

Pitchfork just (somewhat prematurely) released their list of the top 500 tracks of the decade as part of their ongoing P2K: The Decade in Music series. But I guess someone had to kick off the end of the decade lists that are sure to start permeating our lives starting now. Regardless, it’s quite a feat for anyone to take on. When these things do inevitable come around, I love to turn them into playlists for my own bizarre entertainment. You see, I love lists, of any kind really. And these are my favorite kind. So I thought I’d take my playlist of Pitchfork’s top 50 tracks of the decade and put them up here.
