For those who thought I’d fallen off the writing wagon I must apologise, I just haven’t

For those who thought I’d fallen off the writing wagon I must apologise, I just haven’t been near an internet connection since my last update. My home computers are working fine however and I’ve been writing, if not quite according to schedule.

As you can see by my sidebar widgets Novel 1 is almost at 50k now, the wordcount is slightly lower than it should be by the end of day 16, I attribute that to not having written anything on Thursday, Friday and Saturday as I was busy sending time with my hubby By tomorrow I should hopefully be back on schedule, although since Sunday my muses have been suspiciously absent. Probably sulking after I ignored them for 3 days, but I’m sure I can get on their good side again.

As for story 2, that is even more behind. It really should be about 26-27k by now, but it’s been a real struggle all the way. Our main character finally has name, I wanted something traditional in the sense that it’s a name used by a mythical/fictional sorceress/enchantress, however as I searched I found very few names. Greek mythology had Circe and Medea, the first one is bleh and the second not an option, I am not naming my character after a woman who killed her kids to spite her ex. Then there was celtic names where only one came up Anu, kind of a crappy name. Anyway i was feeling ready to break and just compromise with the name of a famous witch, when I finally hit upon Ceridwen, welsh/celtic goddess of Magic, Kerry for short From there more names came into the story and most characters now have names. The story is still untitled though.

I have to admit since my writing break this story has been coming more easily, I spent a lot of time thinking my way through the story over the weekend and it seems to have really helped, so fingers crossed the fantasy muses stay happy.

Right I think that’s it for an update, I promise I won’t wait a week and a half for the next one

I need only two things from studying abroad at the Australian National University but they are price

I need only two things from studying abroad at the Australian National University but they are priceless things to me: cultural perspective and experience in environmental management. I was born and raised in Vietnam until I was nine. Its resilient people, its wealth, poverty and disparity have stayed and bloomed to shape my perspective. But I grew up in the United States, where opportunity, power, racial tension and audacious people have molded me into who I am today. Australia’s position, a country and a continent, closer to Asia but considered part of the West, offers a different perspective from the U.S. and Vietnam, the only two homes I have ever known. Studying at the Australian National University, where most students stay on campus, will allow me to get to know the students and the Australian perspective. Aside from this intriguing cultural learning, I am also very excited to take courses and intern in Australia! I’m an Economics major with a ridiculous interest in environmental management; and Australia started one of the first schemes for trading CO2 Emissions. Many other projects are being implemented right at this moment so I’m incredibly excited to jump into Australia and learn!

[Via Jim Borger.] ——————- Permanent positions ——

[Via Jim Borger.]

——————-
Permanent positions
——————-
These positions are at levels B and C, which are the Australian equivalent of an assistant or associate professorship. It is important to add that, as is usual in the Australian system, the positions at both levels are permanent — there is no serious tenure-review process. All strong candidates currently in post-docs or tenure-track positions are encouraged to apply.

Some preference may be given to the areas of algebra and algebraic geometry, broadly interpreted. We are also looking for someone in stochastic analysis, statistics and applications. But we welcome strong applications in all areas. For applicants in Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Physics, and Statistics, joint appointments with other departments will be considered.

The teaching duties are approximately “2 and 1″, for a total of 3 semester-length classes per year. There is also the possibility of having that reduced.

The closing date for these positions is 30 November 2009.

——————
Post-doc positions
——————
There will be 3 post-docs. They are purely or primarily research positions.

1. Complex and/or differential geometry and/or Lie groups
This is a five-year fixed-term position.
There will be some teaching duties.
The closing date for this position is 30 November 2009.
Contact Michael Eastwood for more information.
(michael.eastwood@anu.edu.au)

The following two post-docs are awaiting administrative go-ahead and will soon be open for application.

2. Algebraic geometry and/or algebraic topology
This will be a three-year position, with a possibility of renewal.
Any teaching duties will be minimal.
Contact Amnon Neeman for more information.
(amnon.neeman@anu.edu.au)

3. Number theory and/or algebraic geometry
This will be a two-year position, with a possibility of renewal.
Any teaching duties will be minimal.
Contact James Borger for more information.
(james.borger@anu.edu.au)

————
How to apply
————

The easiest way is to apply directly to the Mathematics Department. To do this, email the following to admin.msi@anu.edu.au:
1. an application letter (‘cover letter’) saying which position
you’re applying for and giving the names and email addresses of
three references
2. a CV

studying just doesn’t work for me. i cant read things weeks beforehand and be expected to remember it all. so i cram. cramming works better. it’s almost the same as studying, except you do it in a shorter amount of time and you run things over faster. only problem is, of course, the lack of time. 7 subjects in 2 weeks. i think that’s about it? and i just wish we got our exam timetables earlier…

oh, and this reminds me. tytyty to anu for providing our whole grade with notes =)

when i feel bored, i often say i am hungry, tired, sleepy, hungry, bored or hungry. yeah. and then i stone. and then i suddenly feel like singing humpty dumpty… quote from bezzle: “of all songs!!” you can sing it all in one breath, and sing it reeli fast…

i think the yrlies are doing my head in.

i was going to write something else, but i have forgotten. so lastly, i just want to put in a quote for the guy out there who we all reckon is emo…

“Don’t fall in love with somebody who doesn’t love you back – it’s not cool” Herbie John

p.s. not that the girl knows anything about this…TALK TO HER GEEZ.

~ edit ~

i feel reminiscent. not sure if that actually describes how i feel, but yeah. just linking from blog to blog, and finding an old primary friend-then-not-a-friend. yeah. feeling sort of sad too. =(

It is about time that India invests more money in the education sector. Some of the Indian Universities are capable of being in the top 100 list. Reservation on the basis of caste is something which is not going to help. A teacher who gets his/her position from non-merit grounds can not be as good as the one who is there due to academic merits.

Food for thoughts for Indian minister for education, Mr Kapil Sibal!

My apologies for the false dawn. September was an extremely busy month. All in all, I was caught up with two sociology essays, a European Union take-home exam, a politics essay, and two Spanish mid-term papers. Each of these assignment deadlines preceded the other by at least 5-7 days, so in that sense I was fortunate enough to avoid a logjam within any given week.

In regard to academic workload, the semester has been extremely kind, and probably the most spatial in my two years at the ANU thus far. In addition, the car has proved a great convenience, especially during the winter months. Yet I cannot help but feel that my grades are going to suffer from a sustained lack of effort and diligence.

I struggle to come to grips with the situation, though a number of explanations have been offered for this, such as a lack of interest in the courses offered, boring lecturers, a (traditionally) slow start to the second semester, or even a winter break that was less enjoyable than normal due to work. The latter tends to resonate most strongly.

Yet I worked for three weeks at most, ditching the warehouse to embark on a crazy drive to Melbourne in July. On the journey home I picked up a speeding ticket for driving at a radar-captured 136km/h along a 110km/h highway, only to come home to another ticket in the mail for going 70/60 in the city, so that was exciting.

I have since learnt to drive like an old lady. A nice one, of course.

“The Greens have called for an education commission to oversee immigration requirements, quality, monitoring and compliance, a parliamentary secretary for overseas students and an ombudsman. National Union of Students president David Barrow urged universities and colleges to follow the Australian National University and guarantee a bed to first-year students.” HES, The Australian Newspaper, dated 24th Sept, 2009.

We have been saying similar things for a while. Please look at the relevant items in my BLOG.

Will Hon Ms Julia Gillard look into it?

Date: Thursday, 01 October 2009

Time: 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Venue: CSIT Seminar Room, N101, CSIT Building, Building (108), North Road, ANU (campus map)

Website: Seminars @ CECS

Enquiries: Dr Malcolm Newey

“Demand for software developers is increasing while the number of software engineering and IT students remains stable or in decline. At the same time, there is an increasing need to quickly build software systems in response to rapid social, economic and environmental change. The CECS Software-Intensive Systems Engineering (SiSE) group is addressing these issues by developing novel technology which aims to increase software development productivity by an order of magnitude.

“To achieve this objective we are exploring the use of Model- Driven Engineering (MDE) and ways to improve its effectiveness. Specifically, we are addressing problems in areas such as requirements and stakeholder management; integrating multiple viewpoints, cross-cutting concerns, modelling languages and paradigms; variations in architecture and implementation; model semantics, translation, synchronisation, evolution and reuse; the presence of uncertainty, imperfection and ambiguity; verification, scalability and visualisation. This is a long list, but our research indicates the possibility that many of these problems may be the result of entrenched assumptions that underpin existing approaches to MDE.”

In this seminar Dr Flint will demonstrate a new approach to MDE which is developed from a very different set of assumptions. The approach is proving effective and addresses or eliminates many of the problems with existing approaches. If commercialised, it could have direct and demonstrable economic impact by increasing ICT industry productivity and our ability to rapidly react to emerging opportunities and threats.

This seminar is part of the CECS Seminar Series.

Shayne Flint is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Computer Science, Australian National University, and is an active member of the department’s Software-Intensive Systems Engineering group. He started his career as a RAAF engineering officer and has worked in industry in various software/systems engineering, consulting, marketing, management and commercialization roles. Dr Flint has broad industry experience and is the originator of Aspect-Oriented Thinking, a systematic approach to developing, managing and integrating the multi-disciplinary knowledge and expertise required to understand and improve complex systems. Nowadays, he is driven by a desire to radically improve the productivity of software development, particularly within multi-disciplinary contexts such as environmental science and engineering.

So here is the story according to minlee (i have not given in everything because some things are better not told)….

“I was completely drunk and was doing shit things……and i met Aroti , Sonya’s sis.( Sonya is my batchmate and good friend from KV 2). it seems i hardly talked to her at all….i would have if i wasnt high…gotta ask sonya soon….anyways, as i was having dinner with Minlee and Ana, I started complimenting them as a pair (though they weren’t)…..i am so sorry guys!!! must have been quite embarrasing for Ana (though she was quite into Minlee..heh…as far as i remember)..started banging tables, passing comments on other people, making binita di worry and embarrased(sorry for that!!) and flirting awkardly….so it came to the point that i started comparing her to a cute girl in green and started calling “Miss.Cute girl in green” (Sorry but i dont know her name) some stupid names and obviously she heard me as she was just in the back table…and then….some things happened …..sparks flew across the room…and soon i stumbled down the stairs and somehow made it to the bus..i started maybe irritating Anu and Nimey on the bus then…..but i sure remember making them hold hands….(hey!! maybe i become St.Valentine when i am drunk…lolz… )

Anyways, we made it back to Pune and then i dropped off at asif’s place (a guitar guy in the meet) and holy shit!! we stayed at “Miss Cute in Green’s” Boyfren’s flat with both of them included….how shameless of me….but watever…played a bit of guitar …..had some fun….went off to dreamland…at 3 in the morning….me and minlee…..we left the apartment at about 9 in the morning..we saw miss cute as well…but i was too embarrased to ask her anything..all i can say is i am truly sorry Miss cute in green ……took an auto to spicer college (minlee’s hostel and college are there) and i went back to kamat…my hostel…slept like a log!!!!!
