ગુજરાત રાજ્યના પ્રથમ મુખ્ય મંત્રી ડો. જીવરાજ મહેતાનાં ધર્મપત્ની હંસાબહેન મહેતા હતાં.

ભારે રૂઢિવાદી સમાજના જમાનામાં 1897માં તેમનો જન્મ, છતાં. તેમણે 1918માં ફિલોસોફી વિષય સાથે બીએની પરીક્ષા પાસ કરી. પત્રકારત્વના અભ્યાસ માટે હંસાબહેન ઇંગ્લેન્ડ ગયાં. સમાજમાં સ્ત્રીઓના સ્થાન માટે હંસાબહેન ચિંતિત હતાં અને હમેશા સ્ત્રીઓના વિકાસ માટે સક્રિય રહેતાં.

1920માં સ્વિટ્ઝરલેંડની ઈન્ટરનેશનલ કોન્ફરન્સમાં હંસાબહેન મહેતાએ હિંદના બુલબુલ સરોજિની નાયડુ સાથે હિંદુસ્તાનના મહિલા પ્રતિનિધિઓ તરીકે ભાગ લીધો. 1947માં હિંદુસ્તાન આઝાદ થયું અને સ્વતંત્ર ભારતના યુનાઇટેડ  નેશન્સ (યુનો) ખાતેના પ્રતિનિધિ તરીકે હંસાબહેન અમેરિકા ગયા. “અનુપમા”નાં વાચકમિત્રો જાણે છે કે બ્રિટીશ રાજમાં ડો. જીવરાજ મહેતા વડોદરા રાજ્યના દીવાન હતા.

1949માં વડોદરાની મહારાજા સયાજીરાવ યુનિવર્સિટી (એમ. એસ. યુનિવર્સિટી) ના ઉપકુલપતિપદે હંસાબહેન નિમાયાં. ટૂંકમાં, હંસાબહેન મહેતાએ ગુજરાતી મહિલા તરીકે રાષ્ટ્રીય અને આંતરરાષ્ટ્રીય ફલક પર નામના પામી ગુજરાતને ગૌરવ બક્ષ્યું.

“અનુપમા”ના વાચક મિત્રો! આપ જાણો છો કે ગુજરાતી ભાષાની પ્રથમ નવલકથા “કરણઘેલો”ના લેખક નંદશંકર મહેતા હતા. હંસાબહેન ગુજરાતના પ્રથમ નવલકથાકાર અને સુરતનાં સમાજસુધારક નંદશંકર મહેતાના પુત્ર સર મનુભાઈ મહેતાનાં પુત્રી હતાં.

અમે શાળામાં ભણતાં ત્યારે પ્રાર્થનાસભામાં ક્યારેક એક ભાવવાહી ભજન ગવાતું-

રામ કહો, રહેમાન કહો કોઉ, કા’ન (કહાન) કહો, મહાદેવ રી,

પારસનાથ કહો કોઉ બ્રહ્મ, સકલ બ્રહ્મ સ્વયમેવ હી . . …

વર્ષો પછી ગુજરાત વિદ્યાપીઠની લાયબ્રેરીમાં એક પુસ્તકમાં તે ભજન અને કવિ વિશે જાણ્યું કે તે ભજન રાષ્ટ્રપિતા મહાત્મા ગાંધીજીને અતિ પ્રિય હતું. તે અંગે વાંચતાં તેનો સવિસ્તર અર્થ સમજાયો; ત્યારે જ તેના રચયિતા કવિ આનંદઘનજી વિશે પહેલી જાણકારી મળી.

મહાત્મા આનંદઘનજીનો જન્મ આશરે ચારસો વર્ષ અગાઉ ગુજરાતમાં થયો હતો. તેમના પૂર્વાશ્રમ વિશે ઝાઝી માહિતી નથી. જૈન ધર્મની દીક્ષા લીધા પછી તેમણે ગુજરાત અને રાજસ્થાનમાં ભ્રમણ કર્યું અને અતિ કઠોર સાધુ જીવન વ્યતીત કર્યું. આનંદઘનજી માત્ર જૈન સાધુ નહીં, પ્રખર વિદ્વાન, સાહિત્યસર્જક અંને સિદ્ધ યોગી હતા. સર્વધર્મસમભાવ તેમનો આદર્શ હતો. તેમણે ઉત્તમ સાહિત્યકૃતિઓની રચના કરી. આનંદઘનજીનાં ભાવ અને ભક્તિથી નીતરતાં ગુજરાતી પદોને તો ભક્તકવિ મીરાંબાઇની રચનાઓ સાથે સરખાવાય છે.

મહાત્મા આનંદઘનજીએ પાછળનું જીવન મીરાંબાઇના રાજસ્થાનના મેડતામાં વીતાવ્યું અને 1670માં દેહત્યાગ કર્યો.

હિંદ છોડો ! અંગ્રેજો ! ક્વિટ ઇંડિયા!

આ નારાઓ સાથે ભારત છોડો આંદોલન (હિંદ છોડો ચળવળ – ક્વિટ ઇંડિયા મુવમેંટ) ની શરૂઆત થઈ. “અનુપમા”ના સુજ્ઞ વાચકો જાણતા હશે કે ભારતની આઝાદી પૂર્વે હિંદુસ્તાનના સ્વાતંત્ર્ય સંગ્રામનું છેલ્લું આંદોલન તે હિંદ છોડો આંદોલન.

1942ના ઓગસ્ટની 7 અને 8 તારીખે મુંબઈના ગોવાલિયા ટેંક મેદાન (આઝાદ ક્રાંતિ મેદાન) પર મહાત્મા ગાંધી, પંડિત જવાહરલાલ નહેરુ અને સરદાર પટેલની નિશ્રામાં કોંગ્રેસ મહાસમિતિની બેઠક મળી. મહાત્મા ગાંધીએ 1942ના 8મી ઓગસ્ટે મધ્યરાત્રિએ મુંબઈની આ બેઠકમાં અંગ્રેજ હકુમતને આખરીનામું આપ્યું – “ક્વિટ ઇન્ડિયા!” ગાંધીજીના આ વિદ્રોહી એલાનથી બ્રિટીશ સરકાર ચોંકી ગઈ. ભારતના આખરી સ્વાધીનતા સંગ્રામે એવી ગતિ પકડી કે અંગ્રેજી રાજ્યના પાયા હચમચી ઊઠ્યા.

1942ના આઠમી ઓગસ્ટના રોજ રાષ્ટ્રપિતા ગાંધીજીએ અંગ્રેજ સરકારની ગુલામીમાંથી હિંદુસ્તાનને મુક્ત કરવા હિંદ છોડો આંદોલન આરંભ્યું; તરત જ અંગ્રેજ સરકારે ગાંધીજી સહિત તમામ કોંગ્રેસી નેતાઓની ધરપકડ કરી. હવે જનતા સ્વયં આંદોલન ચલાવવા તૈયાર હતી. મહાત્મા ગાંધી અને સરદાર પટેલનું ગુજરાત પૂર્ણ રીતે સજ્જ હતું.

અમદાવાદ અને તેમાં યે ખાડિયાના રંગની તો વાત જ શી કરવી! હિંદુસ્તાનને આઝાદ જોવા ઝંખતા અમદાવાદની ઉત્તેજના અમાપ હતી; તેમાં પણ ખાડિયાનું જોશ તો અનોખું હતું. તત્કાલીન યુવા નેતાઓ જયંતી ઠાકોર (શહેર સૂબા જયાનંદ), વિષ્ણુ દવે, બાબુ રાણા, વાસુદેવ ભટ્ટ, હરિવદન દેસાઈ તેમજ અનેક કાર્યકરોએ અગાઉથી આયોજન કરેલું તે અનુસાર બીજે જ દિવસે અમદાવાદમાં પ્રચંડ પડઘા પડ્યા.

નવમી ઓગસ્ટ (ઓગસ્ટ 9, 1942) ના રોજ ખાડિયા રાયપુર વિસ્તારમાં લોકો રસ્તા પર આવી ગયા. જયંતી ઠાકોર મુંબઈ ગયા હોવાથી તેમની ગેરહાજરીમાં વિષ્ણુ દવે અને બાબુ રાણાએ ખાડિયા પોલિસ ચોકી પાસે હિંદ છોડો આંદોલનનો ગુજરાતમાં પ્રથમ રણ ઘોષ કર્યો. વિશાળ સરઘસના “અંગ્રેજો ચાલ્યા જાવ” તથા “ઇંકિલાબ ઝિંદાબાદ”ના નારા ગુંજી ઊઠ્યા. ખાડિયા પોલિસચોકીથી રાયપુર ચકલાના વિસ્તારમાં માનવમહેરામણ ઉમટી પડ્યો. પોલિસ દમન શરૂ થયું.

સાંજે જેઠાભાઇની પોળના નાકે પોલિસ ગોળીબારમાં ઉમાકાંત કડિયા શહિદ થયા.

1942ના હિંદ છોડો આંદોલન – ક્વિટ ઇંડિયા મુવમેંટના ગુજરાતના પહેલા શહિદ તે ઉમાકાંત કડિયા. અમદાવાદના ખાડિયાના નવમી ઓગસ્ટના સરઘસ – આંદોલનના સમાચાર માત્ર ભારતનાં જ નહીં, ઇંગ્લેંડના પ્રચારમાધ્યમોમાં પણ ચર્ચા પામ્યા. હિંદુસ્તાનની આઝાદીની લડતના ઇતિહાસમાં ગુજરાત, અમદાવાદ અને ખાડિયાના યોગદાનની ઘણી કહાણીઓ છે.

There wasn’t much to look forward in the western round day 3 for me as it was just Ajeesh to perform in the competition. I guess it was a total boredom tactics by Vijay TV last night as most of us already guessed that there will be no elimination. They made all the singers sing again and few of them to repeat what they already sang.

As I said in the preview article Anupama finally made it to the competition as the chief guest and I guess Vijay TV did not expect just to have one contestant not spot selected. Surprisingly they started with Ajeesh, who sang an English song which was decent and everyone liked it, praised him a little bit and the chief guest said that she wanted to hear everyone sing.

Here started the total disaster for the day 3 episode. All the singers performed to make up the 45 minutes to complete the show and finally Anupama decided that Ajeesh is safe. Then there were some meaningless conversations between Srinivas and Anupama praising Ajeesh’s performance. Finally the show ended with Ajeesh joining the group again and yes there are 7 contestants left in the show for the third consecutive week.

This is just getting frustrating as after Aruna and Rohit there has been no elimination in the show. If you consider that Rohit was out only because he pulled out is even scarier. I am also getting irritated with the favoritism of the judges. It seems like Renu is one of them. The song which she sang yesterday was so bad and when we compare that performance to Raghini’s Tamil version the previous night the difference was even more visible. I am starting to wonder if Renu has to just turn up to get selected. She is monotonous, doesn’t experiment, Sings mostly P Susheela and Chitra songs and still keeps getting spot selected because the judges feel that her voice is good.

In spite of a legend like Chitra telling her to memorize the lyrics in a competition she still carries the lyrics in the hand. I think Raghini and Ranjani are far better singers than Renu at this moment. At least they try to experiment and sing different genre of songs. I have nothing against Renu but since I saw her first in the competition I would say she is the most unimproved singer of the pack.

Anyways let’s hope that at least next week we have some progress in the competition and there is some elimination. It’s almost going to be a year and we are not even close to identifying the top 3. I love the competition and hope that it goes for ever but it’s time to start the new season and finish 2008. Let’s hope the organizers get the point.

Airtel Super Singer moves to western round this week and yes we still have 7 contestants. The judges decided to keep all the 7 after last week’s classical round as they felt that it was varying amount of training which separated the contestants. So they did not want to penalize the contestants for their lack of classical training.

This week though it’s going to be different as it is western round and I am sure there is going to elimination. This round will be interesting and I think Vijay and Prasanna will be really relieved after they scraped through classical round.

This round will be strong point for Prasanna and Vijay and I expect them to sail through. I watched few rushes from the show and it seems like Anupama will be the chief guest of the show. They showed performances of Ravi, Ranjani and Vijay in the trailer and it seems like they rocked the stage with their performances. At least Ravi and Vijay did, I am not sure about Ranjani though.

It will be interesting to see Ajeesh and Renu perform in this round as I feel that they will be the ones who might not get spot selected. Raghini and Prasanna might have it easy in this round but I am not sure if they will be spot selected.

Well let’s wait and see what transpires in today’s show. I am expecting a fun round and hopefully it will be great.

ગુજરાતના લોક નાટ્યશાસ્ત્રના શિરમોર સમો એક નાટ્યપ્રયોગ ભવાઈ છે. ગુજરાતી રંગભૂમિના વિકાસનો પાયો નાખનાર ભવાઈનો નાટ્યપ્રયોગ ગુજરાતના રંગમંચ પર હવે ભુલાતો જાય છે. ભવાઇ એટલે ભવની વહી, અર્થાત્ ભવની કથા; જિંદગીની કથા; સંસારની તડકીછાંયડીઓની કથા.

 વિદેશી શાસકોના હિંદુસ્તાન પરના હુમલાઓનો તે સમય. અલ્લાઉદ્દીન ખીલજીના સમયની આ વાત. અલ્લાઉદ્દીન ખીલજીના એક સરદારે સમૃદ્ધ ગુજરાત પર ચઢાઈ કરી. ઉત્તર ગુજરાતના સિદ્ધપુર શહેર તેણે તાબે કર્યું. સિદ્ધપુરનો એક મોવડી હેમાળા પટેલ અને તેને એક સૌંદર્યવતી  યુવાન દીકરી ગંગા.

ખીલજીના સરદારની કુદ્રષ્ટિ ગંગા પર પડી અને હેમાળા પટેલને માથે આભ તૂટી પડ્યું. ત્યારે પટેલનો જિગરજાન બ્રાહ્મણ મિત્ર અસાઈત ઠાકર તેની વહારે ધાયો. કથાકાર તરીકે અસાઈત ઠાકરની નામના હતી. તેમણે સરદારના કાને વાત મૂકી કે ગંગા મારી પુત્રી છે. “અનુપમા”ના વાચકમિત્રો! આપ કલ્પી શકશો આભડછેટનો તે જમાનો? બ્રાહ્મણ કદી પટેલ સાથે એક પંગતે ન જમે! સરદાર કહે કે જો ગંગા તેની પુત્રી હોય તો અસાઈત તેની સાથે એક ભાણે જમે. એક યુવતીના શિયળને ભ્રષ્ટ થતું બચાવવા અસાઈતે ગંગા સાથે ભોજન કર્યું. ગંગા તો બચી ગઈ, પરંતુ  ઠાકરની જ્ઞાતિએ અસાઈત ઠાકરને વટલાયેલો ગણી ન્યાત બહાર કર્યો. અસાઈત ઠાકરને સિદ્ધપુર છોડવું પડ્યું. અસાઈત ઠાકર કુટુંબ સાથે ઊંઝા આવ્યા. હેમાળા પટેલ અને સમસ્ત કડવા પાટીદાર સમાજે અસાઈતનું ઋણ ચૂકવવા તેમના ભરણપોષણની વ્યવસ્થા કરી આપી. કહે છે કે ઊંઝાના પટેલોની કડવા પાટીદાર જ્ઞાતિએ અસાઈત ઠાકરને તથા વારસોને વંશપરંપરાગત આવક મળે તેવા હક્કો લખી આપ્યા.

અસાઈત ઠાકરને સાહિત્ય અને સંગીતનો છંદ. સુંદર સંગીતકથા કરી જાણે. તેમણે લોકભોગ્ય ભાષામાં લાંબા–ટૂંકા ‘વેશ’ લખવા શરૂ કર્યા. પોતાના જ લખેલા અને લોકરુચિને અનુરૂપ સંગીતબદ્ધ કરેલા વેશને અસાઈત ઠાકર અને તેમના પુત્રોએ સમાજને અર્પણ કર્યા. લોકજીવનને વણી લેતા અને લોકમાનસને સ્પર્શી જતા અસાઈત ઠાકરના આ સંગીતપ્રધાન વેશ “ભવાઈ”ના નામે જાણીતા થયા.

સમય વીતતાં ભવાઈ લોકપ્રિય થતી ગઈ અને ભવાઈએ ગુજરાતમાં નાટ્યકળાના વિકાસના નવા દરવાજા ખોલ્યા. ગુજરાતની રંગભૂમિની એ કમનસીબી કે સમાજમાં આવતાં પરિવર્તનને ન પારખી શકતાં ભવાઈ શિક્ષિત કે ‘સુધરેલ’ વર્ગનો ટેકો ગુમાવતી ગઈ અને ક્યારેક તો હલકું મનોરંજન પીરસનાર સામાન્ય સાધન બની રહી ગઈ. ગુજરાતી રંગમંચના ઇતિહાસમાં ગુજરાતી ભાષાના તળપદા, લોકભોગ્ય  નાટ્યપ્રયોગ તરીકે ભવાઈનું મહત્વ અનોખું છે. 

Hemant Kumar was a versatile playback singer as well as music director. He was perhaps the only specialist music director who used to sing as playback singer for other music directors too.

This movie “Anupama” was one where he himself was the music director and he created some memorable music in this movie. One such song viz “dheere dheere machal ae dile bekaraar” sung by Lata, has already been posted in this blog.

One of the songs from this movie that is regarded as a timeless classic was one which was sung by Hemant Kumar himself. It was the song “Ya dil ki suno duniyawaalon” which was picturised on Dharmendra.

As can be noticed, this is a sad song full of pathos and poignancy. Hemant Kumar fans rate this as one of the best songs that he created and sung.

આપને મેં ક્યારેક ભાવનગરના દિવાન શામળદાસ મહેતા વિશે વાત કરેલ છે. તેમના નાના પુત્ર લલ્લુભાઈ.

સર લલ્લુભાઈ શામળદાસ મહેતાના સૌથી નાના પુત્ર ગગનવિહારી મહેતા(1900 - 1974)એ ગુજરાતને ગૌરવ બક્ષ્યું છે.

ગગનવિહારી લલ્લુભાઈ મહેતાને ફિલોસોફી તથા સાહિત્યમાં ઊંડો રસ હતો.

ગગનવિહારી મહેતાએ એમ.એ.ની પરીક્ષા માટે વિશ્વવિખ્યાત બ્રિટીશ ફિલોસોફર-વિચારક બર્ટ્રાન્ડ રસેલ પર મહાનિબંધ લખેલ. તેમના પરીક્ષક ભારતીય તત્વચિંતક ભૂતપૂર્વ રાષ્ટ્રપતિ ડૉ. સર્વપલ્લી રાધાકૃષ્ણન હતા. નિબંધથી પ્રભાવિત થયેલા ડૉ. રાધાકૃષ્ણને તેમને પ્રથમ વર્ગ આપ્યો હતો.

1952માં ગગનવિહારી મહેતા ભારત સરકારના અમેરિકા ખાતેના એલચી નિમાયા. તેમણે અમેરિકા તથા મેક્સિકોના ભારતીય એલચી તરીકેની જવાબદારીભરી અને સન્માનનીય જવાબદારી નિભાવી.

તે સમયે સુપ્રસિદ્ધ જર્મન વૈજ્ઞાનિક આલ્બર્ટ આઇન્સ્ટાઇન અમેરિકામાં પ્રિન્સ્ટન (ન્યૂ જર્સી) ખાતે અધ્યાપન અને સંશોધન કાર્યમાં રત હતા. 1953ના એપ્રિલમાં ગગનવિહારી મહેતા મહામાનવ આઇન્સ્ટાઇનને મળવા પ્રિન્સ્ટન ગયા હતા. લગભગ એક કલાકની મુલાકાતમાં અર્ધો કલાક તો મહાત્મા ગાંધી અને તેમની વિચારસરણી પર વાતો થઈ.

મહાન અણુવિજ્ઞાની આઇન્સ્ટાઇનને ગાંધીજી પ્રત્યે ઊંડો આદરભાવ હતો અને તેમણે ગાંધી વિચારધારાનો ગહન અભ્યાસ પણ કર્યો હતો. આઇન્સ્ટાઇનને બર્ટ્રાન્ડ રસેલની અસાધારણ બુદ્ધિપ્રતિભા માટે પણ વિશેષ માન હતું. આઇન્સ્ટાઇન સાથેની મુલાકાતમાં ગગનવિહારી મહેતાને મહાન વૈજ્ઞાનિકના મુખેથી મહાત્મા ગાંધી માટે પ્રશંસા અને આદરનાં ફૂલો જ વેરાતાં દેખાયાં. ***

વીસમી સદીના ઉદય સમયે હિંદુસ્તાનના મુંબઈ શહેરની વાત.

મુંબઈ શહેરના એક પ્રતિષ્ઠિત મિલમાલિક શ્રેષ્ઠી ગુજરાતી વિઠ્ઠલદાસ ઠાકરસી (ઠાકરશી).

માત્ર ત્રેવીસ વર્ષની વયે વિઠ્ઠલદાસ ઠાકરસી મિલમાલિક – ઉદ્યોગપતિ તરીકે નામના પામ્યા. ઇસ 1898માં માત્ર પચ્ચીસ વર્ષની ઉંમરે વિઠ્ઠલદાસ મુંબઈ મ્યુનિસિપલ કોર્પોરેશનના કોર્પોરેટર તરીકે ચૂંટાયા.

1907માં વિઠ્ઠલદાસ ઠાકરસી મુંબઈ શહેરના મેયર બન્યા.

મુંબઈ મ્યુનિસિપલ કોર્પોરેશનના સૌથી નાની ઉંમરના મેયર બનવાનું માન આપણા આ ગરવા ગુજરાતી વિઠ્ઠલદાસ ઠાકરસીને મળ્યું.

તે સમયે મુંબઈમાં ઘોડાથી ચાલતી ટ્રામ દોડતી. મુંબઈના નવયુવાન ગુજરાતી મેયર વિઠ્ઠલદાસ ઠાકરસીએ મુંબઈ શહેરમાં ઈલેક્ટ્રિક ટ્રામ શરૂ કરી. *  **    *   *  *

Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s best movie might be Anand, as countless polls have shown, but Anupama is certainly the one that marked the beginning of his directorial splendour. Unlike his earlier directorials, Anupama stands out for its restrained expressiveness and unrestrained emotions.

The movie centers around a cast of characters who represent the diverse cast of society – Mr. Sharma the detached father, Uma the reticent girl, Annie the chatterbox, Arun the foreign educated lad, Ashok the idealist and Moses the humanist. Though they all have their dominant qualities, they display alternately their hidden softer and stronger sides. Uma lives in a cocooned world, distant and uncommunicative, blamed by her father for her mother’s death. Mr. Sharma however, wishes Uma to be married to Arun, the foreigned returned stud who is in love with Annie, Uma’s friend. Uma is in love with Ashok, Arun’s writer friend, but is ready to comply with her father’s wish of getting married to someone else. Again, Mr. Sharma isn’t particularly fond of Ashok due to his disarming frankness and rigid moral uprightness. Ashok urges Uma to come out of her narrow world and break free of her self imposed exile. He begins writing her story asking her not to kill her desires for the sake of progenital obligation. He titles his novel Anupama and dedicates it to her, thus bringing about her climactic transformation. The inner conflict of the characters and their struggles within is what the movie mostly depicts in the second half. Scattered lines of simple philosophy and vivid portrayal of human frailty make Anupama a movie to cherish.

David has some beautiful lines in the movie – ‘One doesn’t fall in love, one rises in love. You don’t get killed by somebody’s looks, rather you are reborn by looks’. He quotes Gertrude Stein’s ‘A rose is a rose is a rose’ just before Dharmendra bursts into the iconic song ‘Ya dil ki suno duniya walon’. Hemant Kumar’s music, Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s direction and a splendid cast make the movie memorable. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Anupama is a landmark in Indian cinema, a movie that established Mukherjee as one of the best directors of the country.

Boy, did I tell you that watching movies on the big LCD is a wonderful experience!

ભાઈ, ભાવનગર તો જાણે અળખામણું.  ભાવનગર પ્રદેશની ભવ્યતા કેમ ભૂલાઈ જતી હશે? વલ્લભીપુરની સમૃદ્ધિ અને ઘોઘા બંદરની નામના પણ વિસરાઈ જશે? ખેર. ભાવનગરનો વાવટો ઇન્ટરનેટ પર ગુજરાતી નેટ જગતમાં ફરકતો રાખનાર એક અમારા મિત્ર શ્રી વિશ્વદીપ બારડ  પણ છે.

ચાલો, પાછા મૂળ મુદ્દે ભાવનગરની એક-બે વાતો કરી લઈએ. ભાવનગરનું નામ પડતાં શામળદાસ કોલેજનું નામ કાનમાં ગુંજે.

મિત્રો! ભાવનગર શહેર મહારાજા ભાવસિંહજી પહેલાએ 1723માં વસાવ્યું. ઓગણીસમી સદીમાં મહારાજા ભાવસિંહજીના વંશજોમાં એક મહારાજા તખ્તસિંહજી.

ભાવનગર નરેશ તખ્તસિંહજીના દીવાન તરીકે શામળદાસ મહેતા હતા. નાગર બ્રાહ્મણ શામળદાસના કુટુંબમાં દીવાનપદું વંશપરંપરાગત ચાલ્યું આવતું હતું. શામળદાસ મહેતા ભારે બાહોશ વહીવટકર્તા. ભાવનગર રાજ્યના કારભાર સાથે કુટુંબવ્યવસ્થા પણ કુશાગ્રતાથી સંભાળતા. તેમના કાર્યકાળમાં ભાવનગરમાં મહાન ગુજરાતી સાક્ષર અને ‘સરસ્વતીચંદ્ર’ના લેખક ગોવર્ધનરામ ત્રિપાઠીનું આગમન થયું. ગોવર્ધનરામ ત્રિપાઠી ભાવનગર રાજ્યના એક ઉચ્ચ અધિકારી તરીકે  નિમણૂક પામ્યા. સાક્ષર તો દીવાનની કાર્યદક્ષતાથી ભારે પ્રભાવિત થયા.

શામળદાસ મહેતા ગોવર્ધનરામ ત્રિપાઠીના મહાસર્જન ‘સરસ્વતીચંદ્ર’ના પાત્ર અમાત્ય બુદ્ધિધનના પાત્રની પ્રેરણાનું મૂળ બન્યા તેવું કહેવાય છે.

1884માં શામળદાસ મહેતાનું અવસાન થતાં તેમના જ્યેષ્ઠ પુત્ર વિઠ્ઠલદાસ મહેતા ભાવનગરના દીવાનપદે તથા બીજા પુત્ર લલ્લુભાઈ મહેતા રેવન્યુ અધિકારી તરીકે નિમાયા.

 બંને ભાઈઓએ પિતા શામળદાસની યાદમાં ભાવનગરમાં શામળદાસ કોલેજની સ્થાપના કરી.

During 1960-70s, I only wanted to listen to new songs. But with Vividh Bharati, you stood no chance, and Radio Ceylon broadcasted new songs at night only on wednesday in Binaca geetmala. So most often than not, it is songs like this Lata song that I got to hear at night. These days, I would get mesmerised if I listened to this song, but those days, such songs would put me to sleep out of boredom.

Hemant Kumar was past his days and Kaifi Azmi was never a big favourite with lay public. So such songs as this Lata number were not really all that popular those days. But now, with the benefit of hindsight, one can say that this song has stood the test of time and has ended up as an evergreen song. It may not have been a hot favourite with the listeners then, but it has managed to find favour with audience who appreciate class.

This song tells us about the inner feelings of a lady. These feelings are too complicated and complex to express in words, and Kaifi Azmi does such a nice job, expressing those feelings, and that too in easy to understand words. There is no doubt that this song, like most other songs from this movie, oozes class.

Another Lata gem from 1960s. This song from Anupama (1966) was picturised on Surekha ( I thank Raja for this information). The Bollywood actresses those days tended to look like Vyjyantimala, Meena Kumari or Asha Parekh. Surekha looks so much like Asha Parekh in this song. May be that is because of similar appearance, hair style etc.

Surekha sings this song on a piano wating for her beau Tarun Bose. Tarun Bose, ever so impeccably dressed in suit/ boot/ tie arrives unannounced and enjoys the singing for a minute and a half before revealing himself to her.

Surekha then notices him but continues to sing, but now rest of the song is sung by looking towards Mr Bose.

jab manaaenge wo, maan jaauungi main”,
sung with a naughty smile, which brings a hint on a smile on the lips of Tarun Bose too, is the highlight of this song for me.

It is quite a heart warming song, that one can listen to many a times. The public in 1967 also thought so, and this song finished as high as number 5 in the Binaca geetmala final of 1967.
