Who knows what our lives will look like then. Not this, I said. And she said, So. And if we had been at the seashore, perhaps it would have made a difference. Perhaps the pages of the book would have clung one to the other, and who knows perhaps we would have missed an essential page. But here we are. Still, here we are. And she will sleep tonight, and I will, too. And where we go when dreaming is anyone’s guess. He isn’t telling. He never has. Though he writes book after book and publishes the results and receives the accolades reserved for better men, who couldn’t care about such things and are more concerned with looking inwardly. If looking were the right trope for what saints do when they retreat from the world not to look for God but to find what there is to love in the wilderness.

This is an article from Microsoft small business advice and informs on how to make money from your blog in 5 tips.

How to make money from your blog: 5 tips

Many of the people who write blogs today simply want to share their opinion on something. But then there are the business-minded folks, who have found a way to use blogs, or Web logs, to bring in a little extra cash too.

1. Sell advertising. This is likely the most common means of leveraging a blog to generate income. If yours happens to become a well-known blog, or one that is well-received in a particular niche, it’s always possible to sell ad space on your own. For lesser-known blogs, services such as Google’s AdSense or BlogAds enable bloggers to establish ad programs.AdSense’s — which lets you select several ads that are consistent with the content of your blog — pays you based on how many readers click on the ads for further information. Even better, it’s free. BlogAds, on the other hand, hooks bloggers up with would-be advertisers and levies a commission in return for any ad placements that result. “The nice thing, too, is that the ads are relatively unobtrusive,” says Scott Allen, co-author of “The Virtual Handshake: Opening Doors and Closing Deals Online.”

2. Help sell others’ products. Here is another click-through opportunity. Affiliate programs enable your blog to serve as a conduit between readers and online sites offering various goods and services. One popular choice is Amazon.com. If, for instance, you offer book reviews or even just mention a book in passing in your blog, an affiliate program provides a means for your readers to click directly from your blog to Amazon to obtain further information about the book. If they break out the checkbook or charge card, you get paid as well.

3. Solicit contributions. Not every blog-related income opportunity involves hawking goods or services. As Blanche DuBois did in “A Streetcar Named Desire,” consider relying on the kindness of strangers. Ask for contributions. If, for instance, yoursmall-business blog supports a cause or issue in some fashion — say you repeatedly mention tax reform, health care or some other topic — you can always ask for reader support.Even if you’ve attracted a group of regular followers who simply enjoy reading what you have to say, they may be willing to underwrite their loyalty with a little financial help.

Programs such as PayPal make it easy to establish a simple on-site contribution collection button. “There are lots of worthy ’cause’ blogs that would qualify for donations from grateful members of the blog community,” says Las Vegas communications consultant Ned Barnett.

4. Market your services in your blog. Many people associate blogs exclusively with a cyberspace-based soapbox — a place to shout your opinions and little more than that. Granted, blogs are an ideal venue to share your thoughts with others, but don’t overlook their capacity to generate new business as well. When appropriate, work in references to what you do and, in turn, what you may be able to offer any would-be client or customer who may be reading your blog. That can spread your opinion and your business moxie at the same time.”Instead of short commentaries that begin a dialogue with readers, as many blogs do, I write the equivalent of journal articles that demonstrate my abilities, strategies and perspectives on specific issues,” Barnett says. “When it resonates, it means money. Since starting this approach, I have generated three new paying clients and brought in about $10,000 on revenue — directly attributable to specific blogs.”

5. Use a blog to deepen your existing customer relations . Nor does any marketing material inserted in blog content have to be limited to bringing in completely new business. By using a blog to regularly communicate with existing clients as well as other readers, you can take advantage of the opportunity to fully inform them about everything your business does.

That may expand your readers’ understanding of the full scope of your products or services.”My blog has helped existing clients determine the range of my skills and services,” says Ted Demopoulos of Demopoulos Associates, a Durham, N.H. consulting and training concern. “One client who had only used me for training in the past was surprised at my range of expertise and is now using me for a consulting project. Another who only used me on technical projects is now considering me for a more business-oriented project.”

Banner ads just seem to get deader and deader every day. A young upstart company called “Chitika” has just supplied the eulogy and a few sharp coffin nails to the once hot banner ads of the 1990’s. Chitika goes far beyond the static banner ad concept and into the world of contextual advertising made popular by the Google AdSense program introduced in 2003. The antithesis of the pop-up ad, contextual advertising from Chitika targets the content of the page on which the ad is placed, then displays advertising relevant to that page’s topic. If your visitors are pouring over an article about MP3 audio technology, they won’t see an ad for cosmetics. You can guess what they will see!

WHO IS CHITIKA?

The sexy sounding name Chitika (pronounced CHIH-tih-ka) has nothing to do with bananas. Chitika was created by Venkat Kolluri (formerly of Upromise) and Alden DoRosario (formerly with Terra Lycos). The company appeared out of nowwhere in May 2003 to become a leading player in the emerging industry of contextual advertising. Chitika announced the release of eMiniMalls in June of 2005.

WHAT IS CHITIKA EMINIMALLS?

Chitika eMiniMalls is described a million different ways on the Chitika web site and by enthusiastic webmasters. Among them are “Interactive merchandising service” and the “intelligent and interactive online product merchandising kiosks.” The creative term, “eMinimalls” does a great job of describing the service for everyone. To the webmaster, Chitika eMiniMalls is a snippet of code placed on a site that can target ads to the content and pay each time the ad is clicked by a visitor. To the web site visitor, Chitika eMiniMalls is an interactive informative ad related to the page being viewed.

THE EMINIMALLS AD

What makes the Chitika eMiniMalls ads so irrestably clickable is it’s visual appeal, content and functionality. Part graphical, part textual and part interactive, the eMiniMalls ad scarcely resembles a traditional banner ad. The lightweight eMiniMall “ad unit” presents viewers with options for whatever buying stage they happen to be in via mouseover tabs. The effect is to pack a enough information inside the ad unit–product description, graphic, and review along with comparative shopping info and search box–that the potential buyer gets something userful without having to leave the site. The eMiniMalls ad gives a much more endearing user experience than static text links or graphic ads that fire off a quick sales pitch and call to action. With the mouseover tabs, the user doesn’t even have to make the commitment of a mouse click to get some benefit.

WHAT ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE?

Chitika eMiniMalls promises to “outshine static banner ads” and give webmasters the power to “generate revenue beyond banner advertising.” Got a low performing, high traffic Google AdSense site? Run a split test and see which one performs better. Performance will vary depending on the types of site conten, ad inventory and bid prices. Chitika eMiniMalls ads can be displayed on the same page with Google AdSense ads if the contextual function is turned off with a line of code (ch_non_contextual = 1;). This is currently the the default.

At the time of this writing, webmasters are paid 60% of ad revenue generated. Webmasters tend to appreciate the disclosure of the payout percentage. Chitika makes payments 30 days after month end in US Dollars to the a publisher’s PayPal account once the balance reaches $50. Webmasters can run Chitika eMinimalls on mulitple web sites as long as the terms and conditions are met.

We’ve come a long way from banner ads. Who’s looking back!

Every Post will automatically have a link posted to on Twitter and Yahoo Updates so you can increase your webtraffic.

Sources:Mashable and WordPress Publicize Support

If you’re a WordPress.com user you probably already know about how the service automatically sends your posts toPing-o-Matic! to help promote them for you.

Today the Publicize feature gets a major addition: the ability to send your posts to Twitter. You can go with the default tweet or customize the message, and override the automatic settings on a per post basis as well.

To enable the new feature, head over to your Dashboard: My Blogs admin page. In the Publicize column, check off the Twitter column for each of the blogs you’d like to enable to auto-tweet. You’ll be asked to authenticate each blog via OAuth, after which you’ll see a “Publicize” section at the bottom of the Publish box each time you write a new post.

To override any of the settings for an individual post, just click the Edit link in the Publicize section. You can edit the text of the tweet or turn it off altogether for that post. Note also that the connection settings are per blog and per user, so if you run a multi-author blog each individual writer will have to authenticate to their own Twitter account (or to whatever account is preferred).

If you’re a WordPress.com user, will you be implementing the automatic Twitter posting?

How To Send/Tweet Automatic Post Updates For Twitter

Source: TechieBuzz

<ins><ins></ins></ins><ins><ins></ins></ins><ins><ins></ins></ins>WordPress.com recently introduced a feature called “Publicize”, which allows users to send their blog posts to Twitter and Yahoo as status messages. If you are a WordPress.com user, here are someinstructions, on how you can send out your posts as twitter and Yahoo updates.

Enabling Twitter & Yahoo Updates in WordPress

Step 1: Login to your WordPress.com account and click on the “My Blogs” link in the sidebar.

Step 2: In the blog listing on the right hand side, select Twitter under the Publicize column. You will be shown a message to “Authorize Twitter”, click on it and follow the steps to authorize your twitter account.

When you click the authorize link, you’ll be taken to the third party service, where you’ll need to sign in and approve the connection between your WordPress.com blog and your account.

Once you’ve approved the connection, each time you write a new post, you’ll see a “Publicize” section in the Publish box on your post writing screen.

Once you have authorized both your accounts, your posts will automatically be sent to twitter and Yahoo.

Customizing Tweet/Update Messages

WordPress.com will create a automatic status update message based on your post. However, you can edit the message and customize it. While creating a new post you will see a new Publicize message in the sidebar.

To customize your publicize message, click on the edit link. You can now customize the message that will be sent out to Yahoo and Twitter.

Disabling WordPress.com Posts From Being Sent out as Updates

There are certain times, when you may not want to send out your posts as updates. To do that, just clickon the edit link in the sidebar for Publicize, and deselect the services you do not want to send out an update to.

Many WordPress users may argue that there are several plugins that already do this. However,WordPress.com users cannot install plugins, so the Publicize feature is definitely a very good thing for automatically sending out posts as updates.

Easier than directly adding them in yourself. And is how to make money free from your wordpress blog.

Source: mashable

Adsense Deluxe – probably the most popular and perhaps the best AdSense plugin out there, AdSense Deluxe lets you automatically insert ads (it works with Yahoo ads, too) into your posts or pages. Very configurable and yet simple to use. (at the time of this writing, the official link for this plugin is dead. Hopefully, it’s just temporary.)

AdSense Widget for WordPress Sidebar – Add AdSense to your WordPress sidebar in the form of a widget.

Shylock AdSense – another plugin for easy integration of AdSense ads into your blog; has an interesting feature that lets you set particular ads into blog posts which are more than X days old.

Adsense Injection – random Adsense injection into your blog.

AdMan – integrates ads directly inside your blog posts. Compatible with AdSense.

AdSense Manager – a fully featured AdSense manager. Use the latest version only, as older versions had some issues with the AdSense terms and conditions.

AdRotator – afraid of adblindness? AdRotator rotates (doh!) your AdSense ads, and combines them with other advertising programs.

AdSense Attachment – display extra content, like images, in a new page together with AdSense ads.

MightyAdsense – display AdSense ads without modifying the templates. Has a preview for ads in the WordPress control panel.

Google Ad Wrap – show that pesky Google spider what content on your blog is really important

Adsense Inline – another plugin that makes inserting AdSense into your blog posts really easy.

Adsense Beautifier – places images next to your AdSense ads, which should increase the clickthrough rate. Be very careful with this one, as there’s some controversy over whether this violates the AdSense T&C.

Author Adsense – split revenue between several blog authors on the same blog.

Author Adsense MU plugin – same as Author AdSense, only commercial and aimed only at WordPress MU (Multi User) users.

AdSense Sharing Revenue and Earnings System – another revenue sharing plugin for AdSense on WordPress. Also shows you your earnings in real time.

The Top Adsense Plugins for WordPress

Adsense and WordPress work together in perfect harmony – these are the top adsense plugins suited for your website.

Adsense Injection – This adsense plugin injects adsense wherever you choose, using a code (once you set your publisher ID up) and injecting adsense wherever you want it in a post, using the tag <!–adsense–>, you can set up multiple styles, so setting up a few different looking ads with size and color schemes are integrated and called by using a unique code – for example <!–adsense4–> or whatever you choose to call it.

Adsense WP Widget – A quick and easy solution to creating an Adsense block to display on every page in your sidebar widgets (near your blogroll, etc). This plugin costs $1USD, don’t really know why, but hey – depending on your traffic you could make that back in a day.

Adsense Deluxe – This bad boy offers some unique options to manage automated insertion of your Adsense, and even your Yahoo feed. It has universal control to change your Adsense color scheme across your entire site.

Adsense Earnings – This plugin is incredibly useful if you aren’t logged into your Google adsense account. This is useful for folks like me, logged into Gmail from another account, and then logging into Adsense with another… which logs me out of email most of the time. This plugin shows your daily earnings, and overall CTR of the site.

Shylock – This is another really uniquely designed Adsense plugin. This will swap the targetted keywords to higher-paying ones on posts older than X days, weeks, months. You need to really play around with this one and make it work for you.

AdRotator – A plugin that can manage adsense and affiliate banners, etc. Great for seeing your top performing ads on the site, and doing some split testing between Adsense/banners.

RevShare – A great, great plugin if you have guest writers on your blog – the option of letting them write for your site and having their own Adsense ads on page. They’ll be happy that their writing is benefiting you while they make a bit of passive income on the side.

Beautifier – A fun one for designers. Images are placed near the Ad, to improve CTR – Warning: may be against Adsense TOS

Ad Wrap – Want sectional targetting? Google spiders will love this one because it wraps your posts up in a nice targetted adsense wrap.

If you own a blog , website , widget , nearly anything on the internet you can earn money from it through the Google Adsense scheme. It is absolutely free and easy to register though unless it has many viewing your income will not be great.

Google adsense, the most popular way to put ads on your space.

From Personal experience Google Adsense is extremely easy to make money from, if you have a high hit rate on your site and position adds well you will make a fair amount of Money. The excellent thing is how easy Google has made it to make a place these adverts on the web, just copy and past a few line of javascript into your page after customising it on the web. You can even choose relevant referall ads if you wish with high income rates for things such as signups. For people new to advertising on their space i very strongly reccomend Google adsense because of it’s ease of use, set up and how well it can be customised to your preference. Also for advance users it allows you to get good statisticall feedback on the ads so you can modify them to make you most money possible. It is very easy to add to a blogger blog http://makefreeonlinemoney.wordpress.com/2009/11/20/how-to-make-money-from-your-blogger-blog-with-adsense/ but more difficult with wordpress as you must host your own site or pay an extra fee http://makefreeonlinemoney.wordpress.com/2009/11/20/add-adsense-to-your-wordpress-blog/

The only problem with Google Adsense are the strict terms of use, limiting you to 3 advertisements per page.

Google adsense Report Summary Page

Source: internetdigest.com :

Why is Google AdSense so Popular?

Google AdSense uses Google’s proprietary PageRank™ search technology to deliver ads that are highly relevant to the content of a page. Google’s engine will scan through the content of the page to determine its topic, and will then serve ads that are relevant to the page’s content.

Running Google AdSense is simple and straightforward: Google gives you a snippet of HTML code that you can paste in the desired location on your page, and the ads start appearing immediately after you upload the changes to your server.

However, Google AdSense’s main claim to fame is that, by displaying text-based ads, it is able to deliver much higher click-through rates than traditional graphic banner ads. As usability studies have widely shown, users are already conditioned to ignore banner ads (or anything else that looks like them). As a result, banner ad click-through rates have dropped below a dismal 0.5% (in other words, it takes 200 page views, on average, to get someone to click on a banner ad).

By using text based ads instead of graphic banners, Google has been able to overcome banner ad blindness, delivering click-through rates that are much higher than the industry’s average (some put the figure around the 1.5% mark).

How much can you expect to earn by running Google Ads on your site?

The pay-off per click varies widely depending on what each advertiser decides to offer, based on the profitability of their products and their expected conversion rate (percentage of clicks that deliver a sale). Google is not saying what the average pay-off is nor how does it share the revenue per click with their AdSense partners, but how much you will earn per click will really depends on the topic and the product being advertised. Products with profit margins of $3.00 for the advertiser will probably give you a smaller pay-off per click than a product with a $300 profit margin. Similarly, ads with high conversion rates will normally give you higher payouts than less effective ads, since they can afford to pay more dollars per click, with a portion of that money going to you.

So, just for the sake of giving an example, lets say that your site receives 1,000 page views per day. At a 1.0% click-through rate and $0.50 pay-off per click to you, in a 30-day month you can expect to make:

1,000 x 30 x 1.0% x $0.50 = $150

The more traffic your site has, the more clicks (and the larger the pay-off) you will get.

Will Google’s AdSense continue to be successful?

This is the big question, and nobody has a definite answer yet.

On the downside:

The program will most likely face strong competition from other search engines in the near future.

The proliferation of text based ads could make users “text-ad blind” the same way as they have already become “banner-ad blind”, causing click-through rates to drop.

There is always the potential for abuse, since some unscrupulous program members may violate the program’s rules and click on their own ads, inflating the advertisers’ click-through rate and forcing them to decrease their pay-off per click.

On the positive side, I believe that Google AdSense’s success is not only due to the fact that they deliver text based ads instead of banners, but because those ads are served by Google. The credibility and brand equity that Google enjoys is huge, and I expect them to continue to beat other search engines and advertising networks that may eventually jump on the bandwagon.

However, it is reasonable to expect at least a slight decrease in click-through rates and pay-off as a result of the increased competition.

From Bakhtin’s Problems of Dostoevsky’s Poetics: “In the compositionally expressed

From Bakhtin’s Problems of Dostoevsky’s Poetics:

“In the compositionally expressed dialogues of Dostoevsky’s characters, there are also no separate thoughts or positions. They never argue over separate points, but always over whole points of view, inserting themselves and their entire idea into even the briefest exchange.”

Something reading Socratic Dialogue teaches, whether Plato’s or Dostoevsky’s, is that in human conversation, though often disguised as the arrangement and rearrangement of ideas or theses, something else is always at stake: “whole points of view”–the often disparate positioning, posture, stance of human lives toward ultimate reality, and the possible transformations or deformations of that position. Such possibilities are always difficult to discern beforehand, because one is in one’s position, and to recognize the ways in which one’s position is not self-defining, and might therefore be re-defined, one would have to be somehow outside one’s position:

we might imagine a way of standing that leans beyond its stance, a habit of being-beyond-oneself, a readiness to unfold what unwonted gestures are called for, a readiness to respond to the voice of another.

Shatov appeals to this readiness that is at the heart of all human talking, trying to unsettle Stavrogin’s deeply disfigured and impermeable posture, trying to point with halting, hyperbolic gestures toward “something else“:

“I beg you to treat me with respect, I insist on it!” shouted Shatov, “not my personality–I don’t care a hang for that, but something else, just for this once. While I am talking … we are two beings, and have come together in an infinity … for the last time in the world. Drop your tone and speak like a human being! Speak, if only for once in your life with the voice of a man. I say it not for my sake but for yours…”

Ever wonder how to cure your skin healthy, non-routine to start the usual process of step 12? Good news, because if you are 20 or 60 years, male or female, we all want to have healthy skin, look our best, and these three strategies can certainly help you! We all do not look old before their time. The beginning of sagging or loose skin, pimples and dry skin and wrinkled is not only healthy skin care is in a word, depressing. You’ve probably wondered how a person on earth who looks 40 years 25 or 40 years to another person sees 60 Yes, you can be in their genes, but scientists agree that genetics play no role more likely than 10% in age for our health or appearance, as we do. So what are the strategies for immediate assistance on healthy skin, to identify themselves and how we feel as we do? Here are three healthy skin are strategies anyone can use:

1) healthy diet ‘You are what you eat “as the saying goes, and it is still true. Eating processed foods, nutrients are missing, leading to poor looking skin, not to mention ill health. Not always the right amount of essential nutrients every day, over time the skin loses collagen and elastin. Therefore, you must protect your skin healthy (and health) from the inside out! Only a balanced diet. . . but if you find that your diet is deficient in essential nutrients is, you can always add supplements of quality.

2) the pursuit of good health, believe it or not, but healthy exercise should play a role in a plan of care for healthy skin. Adequate physical activity, there is no need to be a fanatic, because that is how everything is working properly and are flexible.

3) Healthy Skin Care Ingredients Skin Care Products also need to use ingredients that are healthier than others. For example, products that parabens, dioxane, or that contain mineral oil, are much less healthy for you and your skin as an ingredient in products for natural skin care are available. However, not all products labeled “natural” and then read the label and become a little ‘research is worth the time. I’ll give you a head start, here are a few healthy ingredients for natural skin care products: Phytessence Wakame – Appearance? You bet. . . There is a variety of algae (native) to the Sea of Japan. And ‘rich in sodium, iron, potassium, calcium-PLUS group of B vitamins Here is what best suits your skin: • • increases the elasticity of the skin slows down the activity of hyaluronidase (an enzyme which destroys hyaluronic acid in the skin), Cynergy TK – Once again wondered if this stuff is natural. Yes. . It is made with sheep’s wool from New Zealand. This is an interesting part of an ingredient in skin care product, because it is almost like a liquid, the skin of the face and body. Here are some things that are for your skin: • increase production of collagen and elastin • increase the production of new skin cells • Improve skin moisture and elasticity • Reduce fine lines and wrinkles from Phytessence Wakame and Cynergy TK still very new and only used by small niche companies skin care and they are virtually unknown in the Western world. So go ahead and start treatment of healthy skin. Through the understanding and implementation of three strategies in this article, and your skin is his way of looking and feeling younger than described. . . and ask people what’s your real age indeed!
Mother Earth Marriage Fever Strikes Again
Marriage fever has struck Mother Earth once again. Ace ivory tinkler Bryn
Barklam is to marry his Japanese girlfriend Sanae Handa (Ena for short) in
the paradise destination of Hawaii on July 3rd. They met at Club Blue in
Japan while Mother Earth were on tour.
‘I saw her during a gig, and I was very taken by her. I met her later at a
club, it turned out she was a friend of a girl that Chris knows. I’m
learning some Japanese, though not very well but fortunately Ena speaks
quite good English. I have never been happier’.

The Young Mods Forgotten Story
The authorised biography of The Small Faces by Paolo Hewitt is the first
book to be published by Acid Jazz Records’ new publishing company, Acid
Jazz Books. The book features over 140 black and white photos and 42 colour
pictures of the group, many of which are previously unpublished. Although
the band never achieved fame on a par with contemporaries The Beatles or
The Rolling Stones, their influence can be heard in the music of people
like Paul Weller, Mother Earth, Blur or Oasis.
It will be available in all good bookshops from the 4th July, and will be
accompanied by an EP of cover versions of Small Faces songs. Participants
confirmed so far are Mother Earth, Primal Scream, Gene and The Charlatans
but expect more big names to follow suit. All profits go to ex-member
Ronnie Lane, who is suffering from MS.

FUNK FROM THE SKUNKSIDE

Matthew Kershaw talks to lead singer Aya Larkin about the band from
down-under who are soon to be up-over in the UK.

Skunkhour is probably not a name that familiar to Acid Jazz fans in
the this country, but in Australia they are top thirty material. Having
supported both Jamiroquai and Ice Cube live, they now have the UK and
Europe firmly in their sights.

> Can you give me a little of the history of Skunkhour?<
The brothers! Mike and Dean Sutherland (drummer and bassist respectively)
joined musical ambitions with Warwick Scott (guitar) in the rolling green
hills of New South Wales three and a half years ago. This threesome
meandered down to Sydney, where Del (my brother, the rhymer) and I saw
their first gig. I’ve known Michael sporadically for years, and this
invitation to jam live with them lead to Del and I supplanting said
vocalists. Ten months later keyboard whizzkid Paul Searles joined, and the
mongrel mix was complete. We’ve had a couple of convictions for petty
crimes on the numerous tours of this flat brown land, an album and two EP
releases, various attempted scams made upon us by foolish folk-all your
regular trials and tribulations. Now we’ve joined forces with Paul Cussen,
manager and Northern Queensland pit-bull, and we’re hitting other shores.

> How did you get interested in ‘Acid Jazz’ style music?<
We Skunks aren’t exactly sure what ‘Acid Jazz’ style music is, but groove
music has been integral in our upbringings. Mike and Dean’s father Ned is a
jazz and blues guitarist of note. Some of my earliest memories are of
reaching from my low vantage point to grab the cover of things like Blood,
Sweat and Tears album ‘Fresh’, or Credence Clearwater, Santana, Osibisa off
the cabinet in a darkened Saturday living room. My first experience of this
label’s catalogue was JTQ’s ‘Starsky and Hutch’ theme-truly huge!

>There seems to be a consensus amongst Australian journalists that
your music is too diverse to be pegged down by lists of influences and
such-like. We challenge you to list your influences.<
I can’t possibly list each of the six individuals’ influences, though I
know they stretch from many moons ago to the expansion of nineties culture
and consciousness. The roll-call of seventies/eighties funk; Sly and the
=46amily Stone, Gil Scott-Heron, The Meters, Parliament, Funkadelic, James
Brown, Rufus, The Brothers Johnson and Prince. The Beatles, The Jam, Ska
and Motown (Michael was a little rudeboy), The Specials, Madness, Bad
Manners, The British Beat. Remember the New Age Steppers, Selector, Body
Snatchers? Bob Marley continues to inspire everyday. Hip hop is in there;
Public Enemy, Run DMC, Jungle Brothers, NWA. Del’s soaked up Def Jef,
Q-Tip, Be-Bop jazz and more recently Freestyle Fellowship. Vocally, Van
Morrison, Tim Buckley, Marvin Gaye, John Lennon, Gil Scott Heron, Bob
Marley, Stevie Wonder, Bowie, Paul Weller and a hundred more. Not
forgetting Cheech and Chong, and slack dope-filled teenage years.

>How much is the scene in Australia dominated by
what is picked up from British labels, DJs and magazines?<
Moderately. Of course there’s a scene here that is largely anglophile.
British street style has long held a periodic sway because the bulk of the
world’s popular music obviously comes from the USA and the UK. However, a
cosmopolitan and individual community breathes somewhere under the impact
of overseas influence, cooking up its own Australian brew. The diversity is
here to be seen and heard.

>Jamiroquai’s first hit ‘When You Gonna Learn’ is famous for its
use of the didgeridoo. Do you incorporate any native Australian elements in
your music?<
Apart from clapping sticks we haven’t incorporated much in the way of
instruments. We’ve collaborated with Koori musicians on Skunkhour
recordings and continue to be aware of the lessons to be learnt by
embracing and integrating this central culture in this country and our
lives.

> You have said that you are diversifying away from the funk/rap
axis slightly, even incorporating bits of country music. This seems to be a
trend right across the board at the moment, from Galliano to Mother Earth.
Any ideas why this should be?<
Our country element is that slight flavour of easiness and good time you
might get from your country music. It’s not a change of direction for us,
just another component.

>You have supported both Jamiroquai and Ice Cube live. Out of all
the gigs you have ever done, which is the most memorable and why?<
We touch a few bases and consequently end up playing a wide variety of gigs
either on our own or in support slots. The floor of a first floor cafe/bar
collapsed under the weight of a bouncing crowd on its opening night while
we were playing. It was like ‘Uh….back up very slowly, everyone.’ We’ve
had a lot of good times and the feeling changes all the time with different
rewards from different moments.

>I know you intend to base yourself in the UK. Why?<
We want to play live in the countries we’re releasing in, and to bounce
back and forth from this beautiful far flung city to the UK and Europe
costs a bit too much for every gig, even being the incredible superstars we
are.

Skunkhour (JAZID LP/CD 113) is released July 24th.

PLAY IT AGAIN BEN

Kevin Braddock gets the Corduroy Classic five films from the man
who knows…

On the eve of the launch of the new Corduroy EP ‘Clockwork Man’, lead
groover Ben Addison found time in his busy schedule to recommend five films
to AJN fans – blag, borrow or steal, but don’t miss them!
1. Sweet Charity. Great songs, photography and one of the best
party/club scenes ever. Each choreographed dance is subtitled e.g. The
Aloof with their unforgettable ‘Rhythm Of Life’ with the Reverend Sammy
Davis Jnr. preaching his psychedelic message in a crowded underground car
park.
2. The President’s Analyst. In which James Coburn launched the
corduroy suit and is globally pursued for info on the US President. Coburn
hangs out in a wig and shades with a hippie group and plays a gong at gigs.
At one stage he meets The Pudlians, an English beat group who go around
selling acid. Great photography and story. Essential watching for Corduroy
fans wanting to emulate the style.
3. Bedazzled. Peter Cook plays the devil and brings cafe owner
Dudley Moore’s fantasies to life. Includes two TV pop appearances from
Eleanor Bron and Raquel Welch. Little time to breath between laughs. Under
no circumstances miss this one-cinematic excellence!
4. Thunderball. Connery at his best. Not too many gadgets and crap
jokes. Good plot, location and the lovely Claudine Auger (where is she
now?).
5. Pulp Fiction. This film picks you up by the throat, drags you
round the room and if you’re lucky, puts you down gently. The most exciting
film in a long time. What more can a man say?

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

GLOBAL VILLAGER
Things are gathering pace in the Mother Earth camp. Their new 4-track EP,
‘Free Thinker’ is released on July 17th. It includes three all-new Mother
Earth excursions as well as a cracking version of Curtis Mayfield’s soul
stomper ‘We’re A Winner’. Meanwhile, the release of Matt Deighton’s solo
album, ‘Villager’ was celebrated in style at The Blue Note. Greg Boraman
wouldn’t have missed it for the world.
To say the least, ‘Villager’ is a quality selection of first class
songwriting, and Thursday 25th May saw Matt and his funky folk group
previewing a selection of songs for an audience of friends, press and
liggers.
Once past the lamb, rabbit and baby goat tethered at the entrance to the
club (!), we were treated to highlights from the album, Matt being
accompanied only by acoustic bass and drums. The Face have described the
album as ‘the first truly post-Wild Wood album’, and for those of you who
have yet to know the other side of Matt Deighton you can expect to hear
some beautiful harmonic sounds. And, yes, it is folk music, but it’s
nonetheless funky and far removed from the ‘pipe and pie’ folk scene of
yesteryear.
The vibe on the night was as chilled as a freezer cabinet on overdrive-it
was quite something to hear so much sweet, mellow sounds made by just three
musicians. With waves of gorgeous noise bathing the appreciative audience,
the whole room was on a cool blissed-out vibe that was broken only by the
rapturous applause that followed each number. At the end of the set the
entire crowd rose to their feet in appreciation. Which says it all.
Villager is available now on Focus Records from all good record stores.

LETTERS
The MESSAGE
Dear AJN,
A quick word about something that happened last night=8A As a couple of DJs,
we were asked to play funk, jazz and rare in a wine bar in Ealing.
Busy-yes. Appreciated-no. Quote from the barman, ‘Shittest music I’ve ever
heard’. Five of the tunes played:
1. Funky Jam (Hot Ass Mix)-Primal Scream
2. Baby Don’t You Know-Bobbi Humphreys
3. Papa Don’t Take No Mess-James Brown
4. Tres-Os Championes
5. Cry-Money Mark
Our message to all real music lovers-it’s the bad nights that make the good
ones brilliant!
Yours,
Ribs and Spice

The Brum Beat
Dear AJN,
Congratulations to James Taylor and his gang for an absolutely storming
performance at Ronnie Scott’s in Brum recently. An interesting choice of
venue, but a big pity about the corpses devoid of emotion and life sat
right in front of the stage, ie right in the way of a sizeable posse of
punters unable to remain still to the funky sounds from his organ.
Top marks as well for such an enlightening article on Benjamin Zephaniah in
the last AJN – what a geezer!
With reference to the Remix Wrath letter of the same issue, it is indeed a
pity that the only successful British soul singers appear under the guise
of ‘accessible’ remixes, often in the handbag house line of things.
However, every type of music is just as valid as the next, and for me much
certainly depends on the time, place and my mood. Unfortunately, for many
people music is a tool to make a quick buck, which is the reason why so
many promising acts totally sell out and become virtually unrecognisable.
There is always going to be a a strong opposition between the mainstream
and the credible, but anyone with any nous knows that any jazz scene worth
its salt offers a completely different level of culture and emotion.
Get busy=8A keep Sweatin’!

I have no political agenda, which I support. I just want some neat stuff, if not shocking facts of U.S. health care system in terms of the question I dated an article in The New York Times columnist Nicholas D. Kristof, from November 6, 2009 collected in writing. With that said, one would think that would be the richest country in the world, the best medical care to citizens do not have, right? This is not necessarily true.

InAs life expectancy in the United States of America occupies the 31st. That's us in the company of countries like Chile and Kuwait. We have 37 of infant mortality and maternal mortality 34. A U.S. baby is two and half times more than 5 years die, that is, after the age of five than a child in Singapore, for example. But here's the real trick: An American woman is 11 times more likely to die in childbirth than women in some European countries.

According to Mr.Kristof, minorities fare worse. Notes that a black man in the city of New Orleans, a shorter life expectancy than the average in Vietnam or Honduras. How can this be?
Does this indicate a problem in our health care program? Sure. The bottom line is simple: What should you do? For years our leaders have fought in the questions in the care of our citizens. They have not found the answerso simple.

Love the heart that hurts you, but never hurt the heart that loves you.

No man is truly married until he understands every word his wife is NOT saying.

Love is not a matter of counting the years… But making the years count.

You don’t love a woman because she’s beautiful,
She is beautiful because you love her.

Love is not blind.
It sees more, not less.
But because it sees more,
It is willing to see less.

Love is that condition in which-
The happiness of another person
Is essential to your own.

Love is like a friendship caught on fire.
In the beginning a flame, very pretty,
Often hot and fierce,
But still only light and flickering.
As love grows older,
Our hearts mature
And our love becomes as coals,
Deep-burning and unquenchable.
