Well, Hallow’een came and went, and the plants around are dead and dying. So The Captain dragged me out of my cave to blog. About spiders and black glitter and Morticia Adams and stuff.

But first– review of The Chron-o-log-i-cal Fla-neur’s Neu Fave Movie…

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Undead!

Good things require long waits, and the wait was well worth a movie as witty, fun, and entertaining as this one. No doubt it will be hailed at least as a cult classic.

The ever-cool Sean Lennon teamed up with writer/director Jordan Galland (and a really A1 costumer) to bring us the story of Julian (Jake Hoffman; reminded me a little of J.D. from Scrubs) and his best friend (Kris Lemche) and former flame (Devon Aoki; *wolf-whistle*) and her mayhaps-mafioso lover (Ralph Macchio of Karate Kid fame). They all get caught in the theatrical plots of Theo Horace, played by John Ventimiglia (who brings the sex appeal in full force to this event, as the Sire Vampire should). That dish was flanked by a couple of beautiful bloodthirsty babes. As technically inaccurate the whole “beautiful vampire” thing is I can’t help but adore it when done well. And can’t leave out a shout out to Waris Ahluwalia as yet another character that I want to hug. The whole affair ends with my personal favorite character in the movie, the real Hamlet played by Joey Kern like a 70s gameshow host. Not to pidgenhole this fantastic bunch (I would cringe if they were lost to the dead-end-ville that is the Land of Sequels), but King Lear would be my next vote for  their deft and darkly comedic treatment.

THE BOTTOM LINE….?

Funny and dark romance, new treatment to an old idea, plenty of eye candy, you’ll be quoting it as you leave the theatre. Five Stars from theFlâneurs.

Okay, now about Morticia Adams. And why parents should foist her as a role model on their kids.

The Lovely Lady of the Darkness has been pretty ignored lately. Come on people. Let’s get this chick back in the spotlight, huh? She represents all that is good for the lovers of Dark. And speaking of goths….

The subculture of goth has more or less fallen out of trend (good or bad? well, try shopping goth) and has been morphed into the festering stink that is Emo. And “ScrEmo” doesn’t exist. Whoever thought that a marriage between skaters and goths was doing too much E in the 90s. Being goth isn’t wearing black and listening to Voltaire (as much as I love that sick, sick, man), but also being disgusted with the hypocrisy of mainstream First-World culture. But we should be able to laugh at ourselves! We should laugh, people! Goths with a sense of humor, because hey, we’re all burning in the end anyway, right? That’s what’s missing today. No one grabs an old black dress and a fishnet opera glove and go has a dance in a graveyard these days. Hence my bid to re-crown Morticia Adams as a role model for goths everywhere. You just can’t beat a perfectly poised, deliciously dark woman (who obviously can get down if you look close at those comments dropped by Gomez and Fester). Seriously, guys.

O, and lets bash Kids Today a little more. There’s a strong stink of whimpification coming from ‘em. Goth is not the next stage of Whimpo–I mean Emo. Let me make this clear. There is a HUGE difference between pink-and-black checkerboard “ooo look I’ve got a skull-and-bows tattoo tee hee tee hee” little teeny bopper in the corner and the girl who collects dead birds and dresses like Emily Strange’s drab cousin. I don’t even think I need to go into it. But enough of that, I’m gonna tell you why Morticia Addams, bless her, is the perfect role model, parents of the Interwebs.

PROs: Modesty

One thing many parents with daughters worry about is their little baby princess’ promiscuity. Well, look at the women–if you can call them that–of Hollywood today! Morticia, on the other hand, is demure, ladylike, and has her sh*t together in general. Yeah, she gets down with her husband, but no one else, that’s for sure. She’s not an Ice B*ch, she’s got standards, and she’s got self-respect. But she doesn’t shove it down your throat. She just naturally radiates class. I don’t think any jock tried any funny business with her in the hallways, s’all I’m sayin’…

PROs: Intelligence

What is the one thing most kids agree parents are freaking out over? Grades. Being intelligent and mentally well-rounded is a huge boon to anyone, and concerned parents everywhere are rallying tutors and programs and all sorts of fancy cr*p to get their precious lil dumplings a leg up. Well, a kid’s not gonna learn if they’re bored or don’t see how it’ll help them in the real world. Most kids I know, even now in college, they just chug along at the minimum, getting a business degree ’cause they’re not into academics and think they’ll figure it out later, or getting a general degree ’cause they can’t decide and they’re not interested in deciding anyway. But enough; how would Morticia inspire otherwise, you ask? Have you seen this woman? Well spoken, an excellent conversationalist, and rather often seen with a book in her hand. This woman is obviously well-educated and is the kind of mom to value it in her kids (even though she doesn’t play up the mom-figure bit nearly as much as her TV-Land counterpart Lily Munster).

PROs: Glamour

As I’ve said before in varying ways, Morticia Addams was one classy broad. It’s hard not to respect a woman of her ilk, and it all comes part and parcel with the glam, baby. Presentation is key, and this is something that Kids Today are sorely lacking. If anyone had presentation, the ability to get attention (of some sort) and get respect just by walking into a room, it was Morticia. It all goes back to all the things I’ve been talking about for the whole post. She had poise, she had wit, she got respect. Parents with bad kids, or afraid they’ll become bad kids? Have them watch a bit of Addams Family, and Morticia will surely teach them the ways of the well-dressed and well-mannered. Why am I so confident of this? Because kids will always imitate what they see, especially when they’re young and impressionable. Also, they love to get a reaction out of the adults. And if they go around imitating Morticia and Wednesday, they’re guaranteed a reaction from most adults, which will only reinforce the behavior. Obviously, I’m not talking about the goons aged 12+. They’re a lost cause due to bad parenting in most cases. Not even Morticia can help them now. So parents, again, the younger you start, the better the results.

Hey there,

Game 5 was the last game of the main tour.  Five others and I would continue on to see the rest of the parks.

Jingu Stadium is the home of the Tokyo Yakult Swallows.  Yakult is a dairy company- they make a kind of yogurt drink.  The Swallows are the cross-town rival of the Yomiuri Giants since they both play in the Central League.  Adding to the rivalry, a popular Swallows player named Alex Ramirez jumped over to the Giants, reiterating the belief that the Giants always get what they want because they are the richest team.

Jingu Stadium is nice, but our seats weren’t that comfortable.  We were in the front row of a section with a walkway in front of it.  While you couldn’t ask for more leg room, sitting in front of a walkway is not fun, since people selling concessions and people who are looking for their seats keep getting in the way.

The Carp had a no hitter through six innings.  I had never seen a no hitter before and I was hoping that this was the day.  A long time ago, I saw a one hitter (though we got to the stadium late and missed the hit), but that’s the closest I’ve been to seeing a no-hitter in person.

Aoki, one of the better players on the Swallows, broke up the no hitter with a bunt base hit.  It was a cheap hit.  In the MLB, he would have been beaned the next time he was up.

The Carp won the game easily, with a final score of 9-0.

There wasn’t much in this game for the Swallows fans for cheer, but there is a tradition at Swallows games where they hold up umbrellas when the team is having a rally.  The reason for this tradition, according to what I heard, goes back to the rivalry between the Swallows and the Giants.  The use of the umbrella has to do with the fact that the Swallows play in an outdoor stadium and are therefore “tougher” than the Giants, who play in a dome.

Dream 11

Shinya Aoki walked away from Dream 11 today, with the Dream lightweight championship after submitting Joachim “Hellboy” Hansen.

Two of the best lightweights will face off on October 6th at Dream 11.
Shinya Aoki and Joachim Hansen have fought each other twice, this will be their third match. Back in 2006, Shinya Aoki beat Hansen at PRIDE Shockwave by submission. Then at DREAM 5 in 2008, Hansen defeated Aoki by TKO(strikes). Dream 11 to air on HDNet.

i have to find time (and money!) to get myself to nyc!!! i just learned that the ippodo gallery in nyc is exhibiting the work of brilliant ceramicist ryota aoki!! his work is truly inspiring and i’ve yet to see it in person. i first discovered ryota and his work about a year ago on a great (but now defunct) design blog called pingmagmake. its truly a shame that its no longer active and i still have hope that one day it’ll return.

anyways, the ippodo gallery is showcasing ryota’s work until august 31st. i wish i lived in nyc or closer to it!! Here’s a little blurb about this artists from the new york art beat (nyab) blog:

“Ryota Aoki was born in 1978. He dresses in Comme de Garcons fashions, wears a turban and ear piercings and works in a studio that looks like a secret hide-away with made-in-Japan rap blaring in the background. But what he does there is to engage in a conversation with the soil of Japan, with its earth. Aoki is a potter who has brought the refined and super-conservative ivory tower world of ceramics, remote from contemporary Japan, into the middle of cutting-edge street culture…

For Japanese ceramics, the soul of Japan’s traditional aesthetic flourished in the 16th and 17th century. At that time, the Way of Tea reached unprecedented level of refinement and the generals of the Warring States period competed for famous utensils. Aoki learned about the remarkable activities of these potters from a popular serialized manga and has been tireless in sharing their achievements with the people of his generation. ‘The ceramic arts degenerated because people were only trying to reproduce things like the Shino and Oribe pieces that were made in the Momoyama Period.’ Aoki says, ‘My role is to inherit the spirit of the Momoyama Period and make pottery that fits in with our world today.’ By creating a network of potters about 30 years old, he is making steady progress in building up the kind of momentum that existed 400 years ago.

In Aoki’s studio, there is an array of beakers containing various clays and glazes; and when he discovers a new material or color, he is tireless in trying this or that scientific experiment until he can re-create them. In that spirit, the theme of his first exhibition here at ippodo New York is “The New Ceramics Laboratory.” It provides a multi-faceted view of Aoki’s experiments with clays, temperature, texture, glazes, techniques (mold or wheel) and size.

Interest in Aoki’s story is such that a Japanese documentary TV-maker has been chronicling his life, and this New York exhibition will be the final segment. And toward the end of July, Sen So’oku, the future Grand Master of the Mushakoji Senke Traditional School of Tea, is planning to use Aoki’s tea utensils in a thought-provoking Tea in the Gallery.“

Six-year-old Aoki Lee Simmons stole the spotlight while with her father Russell Simmons, her dad’s girlfriend Julie Henderson and older sister Ming Lee,9, at QVC’s Super Saturday Live at Nova’s Ark Project on August 1, 2009 in Water Mill, New York.

Aoki put on a show for the cameras while Ming seemed a bit camera shy. I thought it was soo cute the way Aoki holds onto Russell’s girlfriend, Julie. I wonder what Kimora thinks about all this ??

Either way I thought they all looked happy except Ming.

Aoki now has freckles and is cuter than ever. Available on the wall in the left section of the store (the freckle section).

:/ Dont know why Im on the border of completely loving celeb dj’s or hating them. I think its because they dont have the skills of a dj, but you just love the novelty of it.   But enjoy

The big news this week was, of course, the new addition to Kimora Lee Simmons’ family, her son with actor Djimon Hounsou, Kenzo Lee.  The self-proclaimed model-mogul-mom also has two daughters/reality starlets, Ming Lee and Aoki Lee.  

In other starbaby news:

• Comedian Gilbert Gottfried and welcomed son Max Aaron, a brother to Lily Aster.  Max is clearly the new Jake – but what with the Max/Maxwell/Maxfield/Maxim and such choices, it may be a few years until his popularity is obvious in the Social Security rankings;
• Max is clearly a celeb fave - Lance Armstrong welcomed a son named Maxwell Edward, little brother to Luke, Isabelle and Grace;
• CNN correspondent Brooke Anderson announced the birth of daughter Kate Victoria – I’m a sucker for that one-syllable first name, longer middle name pattern – it’s quite unexpected;
• Charmed alum Holly Marie Combs named her third son Kelley James.  Big brothers are Finley Arthur and Riley Edward.  Finley, Riley and Kelley – they sound quite a bit like Angie Harmon’s Finley, Avery and Emery, don’t they?  Only we all know that Angie’s trio are girls;
• R&B singer/reality TV star Bobby Brown welcomed a son, Cassius.  He’s the fifth kiddo for Brown – older sibs are Landon, LaPrincia, Bobby Jr. and Bobbi.

Elsewhere online, you don’t want to miss:

• The Toronto Star profiled a couple with daughters named Kalliyan – rhymes with stallion – and Taevy – rhymes with Davey.  Thing is, mom is Cambodian and says that they’re both Cambodian names.  But are they the Cambodian equivalent of Katherine and Mary, or the Cambodian equivalent of Tiffany and Mackenzie?  Cross-cultural names are tricky;
• Speaking of cross-cultural naming, Nameberry’s post on quirky British names was pure fun – I loved Oliver Reckless Hyatt, Alexi William Martin Rabbit, Ursula Isabel Langdale and Elspeth Alice Eugénie.  If you’re so inclined, you can check out the Telegraph Birth Announcements yourself.  Just now, I stumbled on a newborn Rufus, brother to Stanley and Jasper;
• A few readers have mentioned that they find Swistle’s posts a little on the dull side, and while she does field questions from parents choosing between Ava and Emma, check out these combos: Abigail Genevieve Dahlia, Sophia Madeleine Eilidh, Gemma Evangeline Claire and Ivy Susannah Vivienne - all sisters;
• Speaking of Ava and Emma, Elisabeth at You Can’t Call It “It” did a fun Alternate Top 100 – ideas to substitute for those familiar most common choices.  Check out her boys’ list and girls list. And yup, she suggests Max as a substitute for Jacob;
• Nancy of Nancy’s Baby Names has been on location in France, seeking out unusual appellations in museums and graveyards, store windows and monuments!  I’m seriously thinking of saving up to send her somewhere else fabulous because her series was just amazing.  Two of her finds – Nadège, the name of my old roommate (she was Haitian), and Raphaëline – which I’d love even sans umlaut;
• Lastly, Swistle also posed a question about whether siblings’ names should match?  And what does that mean anyhow?

I think it goes without saying that sibs’ names should have something in common.  The question that plagues me is what to do when your partner has a child from an earlier relationship.  If his first two kids are Kaylie and Jayden, do you try to match the style?  Or do you stick with Oliver and Eleanor?  Or try to split the difference with something like Matthew and Avery?  It’s not a challenge I’ve faced personally, but every time I hear a much-married celeb’s list o’ kids – like Bobby Brown’s quintet – I wonder.
