To the above Reviewer… All you had to do is just take the 20 AMP plug off and put a 15 AMP plug on. Sure, you can not use the full load capacity but your run time will be great. I modded my own Smart UPA 2200VA over 7 years ago. I am on my second set of batteries with this thing. It still runs stable… Very few pieces of man-made equipment can you say this about. So do not let the plug deter you… or others. Plus it has full sine-wave output… not stepped sine-wave. For example with a stepped sine-wave output, on BATTERY POWER alone, if you plug a florescent bulb into it the bulb would turn on and off, if you were using a regular light bulb you might see it go dim/bright/dim/bright. The stepped sine wave output is a approximation of AC (alternating current) but the sine wave is virtually identical to the power that comes out of the wall. Sine Wave output requires more expensive electronics.

APC Smart-UPS 2200VA for Servers, Voice, and Data Networks – SUA2200 – R. Baxter –
I own several APC products ranging from 1000VA to 2200VA. Solid performer. True sine wave output. Batteries easy to replace. Remember to replace batteries when they start degrading in performance.

Requires Special Receptacle… – Super Dave – Ada, Oklahoma
This is a review demonstrating my experiences with the product, rather than a review of the performance of the product for reasons I will explain.

I have never had to worry too much about UPS’s, as most of the time, UPS’s met or exceeded any power demands generated by the power supplies of my computers. In today’s world, this fact is changing. With multiple cpu boards, and multiple PCI 2.0 cards power demands are on the rise, despite the lower power consumption of newer processors. With 1500W PSU’s out there, a regular UPS wont do. I was in the process of having built a 1200W PSU computer, and I needed a UPS that could handle the job.

UPS’s are rated by their “VA” which is simply their volts times their amps. Normally, people are used to volts times amps equalling watts. This is not the case with batteries. Since they are supplying the current (as opposed to having a regulated current supplied through the power company), we must factor in their (UPS’s) innate resistance to supplying that current. In most cases this can be a large factor, but in this case it is in neighborhood of 16%, since this 2200VA product supplies 1850W.

My problem with this unit is simply the plug. It does not have a standard 15amp plug you would find at the back of the vast majority of computer equipment. Due to the high power demands, it uses a specialized plug which should be installed by an electrician. The plug is basically the same as a regular 120V plug except it is larger (I thought it was a 220 plug) and has one of the terminals turned horizontally. This plug requires a receptacle that is not the sort of receptacle you can find easily in a small town hardware store.

I did not notice anything in the description to warn me of this, and I knew it took 120V input from other sources. In my naivete, I did not think it would require a special plug. This, is due to the fact I have never needed anything bigger than a 800VA in my life… and I didn’t find out about the plugs in any of my research. I even had a 220 plug installed in my office in case it was needed.

Still, the product seemed like a great one, and it is as heavy enough to impress anyone you can sucker into helping you move it. I think the freight shipper (yes, if you order you have to sign for it with the hand delivered freight shipper) said it weighed with the palette about 120 pounds. I only wish I was able to test it out…

In the end, I ended up getting a higher than average efficiency 1500VA UPS (which most use standard 15amp plugs) which supplies 1200W. Most units you would pick up at the office supply store or electronics super store are not this efficient. This I think is the best option for the power hungry home power user. But with the reputation and quality and my past experience with APC, I am sure this unit would be a great investment for someone who has specialized plugs, or the service of an electrician handy…

After a long, snowy journey home and an 8 hour sleep behind me, I’m wide awake at 5am. These jolts of colorful winter accessories are making it impossible to get back to sleep. Wanting that laptop case to impress those security folk at the airport for the trip back, heh… But for the next ten, moseymanless days at home with the family, I plan on watching sugar-plum fairies dance in my niece’s head, eating lots of chocolate biscuits, burritos, bagels and home cooked food, shopping with my mum (something that hasn’t been done in years!) and of course, opening presies! Anyone else jet lagged?

I wore the New Standards to a full-day location shoot earlier this week. It was by far the most punishing day the pair has seen so far and I decided to document how the jeans looked at the end of the assignment. So this is me slipping in front of the camera just before the final shot of the day.

The knee area is totally stretched out and the honeycombs and stacks are rock solid. I belong to the side of the fence where the general opinion is that jeans look better when they are abused with use.

One thing I did notice with the APCs is that they fade a lot faster than my other jeans. It has been barely a month and already I’m noticing patches of lighter shades. My KMW is still stubbornly holding on to its dye and my Uniqlos took a few months before I noticed any hints of fade. So… APC denim = super stretch+fast fades? It seems that way but it’s really hard to tell because I only have one pair. And I wear it particularly hard as well.

Early 2006 if I am not mistaken Ben and Nick created Apartment and officially jump started the streetwear scene in Brisbane. They were one of the first to establish a store that catered to streetwear affacionados, and the 4000 got it’s first instore glimpse at many brands, some that were unattainable before they came along and even introduced modern classics such as FEIT.

As streetwear has evovled so did Apartment and true to their taste they are introducing brands and designers to Brisbane that have until now only been seen on blogs and webstores. Apartment is again setting the tone for modern streetwear with brands that represent simplicity, quality and attention to detail. It is admirable that they are bold enough to venture into the new, it is one of ‘the’ stores you must checkout if you’re in the 4000.

As I say in the video, this week was pretty rough. I expected some sideways movement after we touched that support line on the DOW, but instead we actually had a pretty decent up move, and made a recent higher high. Yet, the NASDAQ still looks very toppy and ripe for a turn down. It has been a meat grinder lately, and it might stay that way. But when I look at the dollar strengthening exponentially, I just have a hard time seeing this sideways to up movement holding on. We have a little economic news this week, but that didn’t really move us much at all last week, just pops here and there, and most of that move was prior to any news.
I’m documenting this earlier than I had planned because, as mentioned in my previous post, the jeans

I’m documenting this earlier than I had planned because, as mentioned in my previous post, the jeans stretched quicker and bigger than I anticipated. So I thought it would be a good idea to note it down.

Here’s a shot of the waist.

This is my most frequently worn pair in my rotation, so out of the 14 days, it has probably seen about 9-11 full days of wear. The denim is still stiff. It’s holding the creases well and even the shape of my legs. Only the waist feels significantly softened. The knee area stretched out quite a bit as well. I know some people hate that but I think it adds a nice dimension and balances up the honeycombs behind and the stacks below.

I hope this is helpful to anyone considering a pair of APCs. As a borderline OCD info-maniac myself, I understand the need to know everything before jumping in to commitment/purchase. Well, almost everything. But seriously, you can’t go wrong with this pair. Just get it if you want it and can afford it.

Unless something dramatic happens, I’ll probably do my next APC NS update in a month or two.

The line up in my current denim cycle happens to be these three now. I rotate with 6-7 month interva

The line up in my current denim cycle happens to be these three now. I rotate with 6-7 month intervals. That’s my limit between washes and the triple pair rotation allows the denim to air so they can last the entire duration without going nasty. I know other denim freaks have a different OCD approach to their pairs.

I would love to have pictures in my entries but it really kills the spontaneity of the writing. I prefer to post pictures I have taken myself than to grab from other sites, and I don’t happen to snap shots of my denim on a regular basis, but I’m making it a point to do so for my APCs to document their breaking in process.

APC: Made in Macau with Japanese selvedge spun from Egyptian cotton. My first impressions were very good with the New Standards. Very well made and the fit felt and looked amazing. The denim was beautiful. It had that raw sheen to it and the honeycombs and whiskers all set into place easily and nicely. I’ve had them for a month now and over these four weeks, I felt the denim expand quite a bit. Honestly it’s rather shocking. The seat and thigh area are now considerably looser than when I first got it. I wore a belt from day one because I anticipated the stretch issue. Now when I remove the belt I can see a defined line that separates the area covered by the belt and the very stretched out portion above the belt. It made me wonder if I should have gotten a size 29 instead of a 30. It’s disturbing because when I tried it on, I could not even button up the top two buttons on a size 29.

With that said, I still love the New Standards. The cut and fit are still there and it feels great. If anything, they feel like they are on their way to becoming my most comfortable jeans. In fact, I would consider getting another pair. I’m just a little surprised as my other jeans weren’t this drastic in terms of stretch.

KMW: Selvedge that is spun, dyed and made entirely in Okayama. Cotton from Zimbabwe. When I took this pair out of the plastic, I was awed by the construction. They looked even better made, and made with more care than the New Standards. I got the 2010 cut, which is a straight, and thus baggier than all my other denims, yet somehow it managed the optical illusion of being a classic slim cut. I think it’s because of the extremely well fitted seat and perfectly proportioned yoke. The illusion only works when I pair them with my slightly chunkier sneakers. There is stretch in the jeans but it’s a normal reasonable stretch… nothing surprising like the New Standards. The fabric is beautiful but not as friendly to the skin as the APCs. I also have mixed feelings about the selvedge coin pocket. It feels like a weak link in an otherwise tough pair of jeans. I tried utilizing it a bit and the selvedge line frayed almost instantly. But it is a nice visual detail though.

Kicking Mule Workshop makes a kickass pair of jeans. It’s not perfect, but it’s close enough. I would be hard pressed to choose between APCs and KMWs. They are both impressive in their own way.

Uniqlo: Not sure about the details of the fabric but it is selvedge and apparently made entirely in Japan. First impressions – this is one affordably priced denim! The cut and construction is decent, though not as amazing as the APC/KMWs. The tag said ‘slim fit’ and it is as slim as it can be without being classified as ‘skinny’. The surprising thing about this pair is the stretch, or rather, lack of it. Of all the jeans I have, this one has the least stretch. The fit has remained the same since the day I got it. I have yet to try a pair of LVCs, but right now, I would choose the Uniqlo over all the other Levi’s I’ve had so far.

Despite the ambiguous pedigree, this pair is a dark horse. It is great value for money and because of the price point, you wouldn’t mind working the pair harder than the more expensive options – thus potentially creating more dramatic wear marks. Though the construction could have been better, the cut and fabric used is really nice and to me, those are the most important things.

This week I came across an article from Gartner that can be found here. Essentially, Gartner has co

This week I came across an article from Gartner that can be found here. Essentially, Gartner has concluded that the issues facing data center managers today will worsen in 2010 because of rising energy costs and a lack of tools that effectively monitor data center efficiency. Gartner has also estimated that energy costs will soon emerge as the second highest operating cost (behind labor) in 70% of the data centers world wide.

The best way to measure data center efficiency is with Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE). According to the Uptime Institute the typical data center has an average PUE of 2.5, which means that for every 2.5 watts delivered to the utility meter, only 1 watt is delivered out to the IT load. The Uptime Institute also estimates that most data centers can achieve a 1.6 PUE by using better tools and a best practices approach. This means we are losing over one-third of our energy to inefficiencies. How would your business be affected if we could find a way to cut your power costs by one-third?

Gartner’s top 3 recommendations for cutting data center costs include:

Rationalize the hardware

Consolidate data center sites

Manage energy & facility costs

Gartner also says that metrics and continued monitoring are critical components of keeping your data center costs down. Lucky for you, Lewan has been helping local customers address these issues for years and our partners HP and APC have some unique seminars coming to Denver to show you how to tackle these issues.

HP Converged Infrastructure Road Show – January 26th & 27th – Register Here

From Green IT and virtualization to cloud computing, today’s mega-trends demand a new approach to infrastructure—an infrastructure that matches the supply of IT resources with the demand for business applications. Join us to see how the HP converged infrastructure architecture is breaking down technology silos to simplify IT and accelerate business results.

Check Price Now!

First of all why do you want a power UPS? There are some very good reasons. (1) You never want your machine to go down incorrectly because of a blackout. (2) You want to work with clean power only. (3) You want to monitor your PC power. (4) You want to prevent your PC from being damaged due to a power problem like a lighting strike and want surge protection. The first rule about UPS is to never trust the insurance claim. Get your PC insured elsewhere. These companies have a tendency not to support their insurance claims. I have a PC running some very high specifications with over six USB devices, LCD monitor, printer and Ethernet equipment, with everything on at the same time. I have never gone above 325W of usage and average between 250W and 300W when managing a high spec game and doing lots of background tasks. Even though I have a 400W Power Supply Unit (PSU) I will be upgrading to a 500W PSU because it is better quality model. The way I can monitor how many Watts I use is with UPS software and hardware. So the question you need to ask is how many watts you will be using. The short answer to this is you don’t know until you install the UPS and software that tells you how many watts you use because that appears to be the only way you can monitor your wattage at this time. You need to estimate what it is. I would say a high-end domestic PC (not a server) would use 300W max if it has one of every device you can think off turned on. As soon as we add things like another PC, or several printers, or several monitors, then we can start to overload a 325W UPS. This brings us to the first thing we need to learn about any UPS – Overloading and balancing. The overload feature is a warning system that turns on when you have overloaded the UPS capacity. Overloading does two things. It can in theory eventually damage the UPS and it voids the warranty. Most UPS are 325W but there are 800W – 1000W and even greater models out there for home networks that use more than one PC setup but to be honest you are probably going to get a UPS per PC setup rather than expensive bigger UPS for a network. So check the UPS rating. What UPS you choose depends on how much you want to load on it. Next thing you need to check with the UPS is if it comes with a USB connection. If it does this is a big plus because it means you can control it from your PC and the UPS comes with software. Now if the UPS has this feature then you can do loads of stuff like turning off UPS sound alarms, controlling how your UPS handles a blackout, how long it uses the battery before shutdown or hibernation, if it sounds an alarm or not, if it run self tests, data collection and monitoring, notifications and sensitivity settings. If the UPS does not come with a USB connection and software then you probably should be looking for an UPS designed for computer use rather than a UPS for non-computer equipment. Most UPS have LED indicators that tell you the status of the unit. The next thing to understand is that testing your UPS is not done by breaking it out of the box, connecting it to the mains, plugging your PC in and then turning off the house’s power with the circuit breaker. You must charge the UPS first! So read the instructions. Usually you must attach the battery to the UPS (plug it in firmly!) and wait before using it. Then perform the test using the software first! Then you can consider trying to simulate a blackout in your home to see if the PC stays up. Usually a UPS is programmed to shutdown your PC if the blackout lasts for a few seconds. Nearly all UPS models with a USB connection can be customized for the shutdown event or how long the PC should hold for on the UPS battery. Most UPS devices allow you to connect a modem phone line into the device and then run a phone line into your modem. This is important because power surges on a UPS that do not have this protection can damage a PC through the unprotected phone line running into the modem that usually runs to the PC somehow. This is nasty problem with the degree of security that a UPS can provide. If it doesn’t have this function then it is not going to provide 100% surge protection with a PC that is on-line. Networking a UPS PC to another PC without UPS can also increase the risk of surge protection problems. It is not recommend that you network a UPS PC to a non-UPS PC unless surge protection and the warranty are not an issue. One last thing is that some UPS have input regions on the UPS for surge protection and other input regions are not surge protected. Also with some models the batteries need to be replaced after a few years if you end up using them a lot. This is everything you need to know about an UPS before you choose one. It is basically now about downloading the technical specs of the UPS and making sure it provides you with what you need. The two top brands are APC and Belkin.
