What an amazing simple app, that can really change your writing experience – OmmWriter. I really want to write some more now ;]

Every now and again you see something that harnesses existing technology to create something truly spectacular. This weekend I discovered the iPhone app, TweetsAR, which does exactly that.

The introduction of location based Twitter updates caused quite a stir. There were obviously those who recoiled with fear, Big Brother style, and those who were excited at the potential this presents – from both an end user perspective and possible business use.

TweetsAR transforms the function into a user-friendly application that brings Twitter updates in to the real world. Nearby users appear as though they are floating around you when viewed through the handset. Point it at your fireplace and you will see your neighbours updating their status three doors down. Lay it down flat and you can see nearby users on a virtual map.

This may be viewed as a gimmick but there are also some genuinely functional uses to the service. Switch on the app at a networking event and you will have an instant window to who is in the room. This ability to connect with likeminded individuals is in the true spirit of Twitter. As the festive event season begins, there will be endless opportunities to put this to the test.

If nothing else, it will put a stop to the classic ‘I’ve met you before but can’t remember your name’ dilemma!

Deliveries for the iPhone

I have watched this little App develop over the past few updates into something quite fine and supremely useful! Deliveries is, in my opinion, a perfect example of the real potential and attraction of the iPhone.

The premise is simple: track shipments and packages quickly and easily. Automate the process for over 30 major internet vendors and commonly used shippers, so that you can track either by order number or by tracking number. As the app has developed, the authors have added the ability to see expanded order detail (automatically retrived from the vendor or shipper’s web site), a map of where your shipment is in relation to where you are, and the actual info page on the internet from the vendor or shipper…all without leaving the app. Very fine indeed. And useful! I find that Deliveries has become my preferred way of tracking packages. I will turn on my iPhone to check a package, even when I am sitting at my computer. And if that is not a testiment to the potential and attraction of the iPhone, I don’t know what would be.

The process is as simple as the premise. You add a shipment to track by entering a nickname, picking a vendor or shipper from a long list of possibles, entering the order or tracking number (which you can copy and paste from the confirmation email on the iPhone), and your account credentials if appropriate. Once a shipment is added, opening the app will automatically update the status. There is even a big count down number of days remaining to cheer you when you check.

I have tested Deliveries so far with Amazon and UPS, and it works amazingly well. There may be services in the vendor/shipper list that do not work as well…but I am assuming that they all function…and if they all work as well as Amazon and UPS, I would not be surprised.

So…if you order over the internet, or, as I do, regularly ship UPS or FedX, get this app! You will love it for its functionality and elegance. You will come, as I quickly have,  to depend on it, and on your iPhone, for all your order and shipment tracking needs.

Mobile phones have to be one of the best on the spot, at the moment, information retrieval resources of all time.  How many times have you seen disagreements settled immediately, courtesy of a quick iPhone web research query?  Well, it looks like some companies are ready to capitalize upon our penchant for instant research about things that interest us.

Let’s flash back to a recent industry panel where a senior Best Buy executive said “The right information at the point of impulse increases desired consumer’s behavior, sales, profits and customer satisfaction.”  That sure sounds like a description of one of Best Buy’s best in-store salespeople helping out customers standing next to the latest electronic gizmo in one of their stores. 

It isn’t. 

The conference was a mobile conference and the speaker was the senior manager of marketing and emerging capabilities at Best Buy.  She was talking about using mobile phones – not salespeople – as the information source at the point of impulse. I guess there is nothing like a little recession to make retailers think a little harder about how utilize our collective penchant for using our mobile phones for quick research projects and potentially saving some money in labor costs in the process.    

Here’s how it works:  Using the mobile phone, customers can request information about any product on demand in a Best Buy store with a call to action on a product fact tag in store. What a great idea for consumers (no more pesky sales people asking ‘how can I help you’) and what a great idea for Best Buy (cut a little payroll here and there as the idea takes hold – I know, I know, not one salesperson will be fired as a result of this technological advance which is solely dedicated to the betterment of our customers:)

The truth is that we are already moving more and more to a self-service environment, anyway.  Why not leverage the mobile phone to eliminate cost, bring down prices, reduce the frustration in trying to flag down elusive salespeople to ask questions, and give us another excuse to have fun looking up info on our mobiles?  It sure makes sense to me.

So, let’s take this one step further. 

What if retailers gave us the opportunity to engage in interactive texting?  Think of all the time we waste, and frustration we accumulate, in big box stores feeling like we always have to muscle in to get a little service.  Wouldn’t it have been a lot easier to just text in the question via mobile phone?  Then, get an answer and re-text our next question?

Why stop at electronics stores? What a great way for bookstores to compete with online retailers – just text in the title you are looking for and receive information on whether or not it is in-stock and where it can be found. 

And, how great would it be to have self service mobile Q&A on the new car lot?  I don’t really like all of the sales pressure from those pushy car salespeople and now I can avoid it once and for all.  For good measure, I could just text the offers and counteroffers back and forth and never have to talk to them in person!

The best application, though, would be in high end department and apparel stores.  After trying on the overpriced designer suit, I could text in the question “How does it look?” I guarantee the response will be the same as if I had asked an in-store salesperson (who could actually see me in the suit) the same question.

On second thought, text messaging just can’t replace the sincerity of those baby blue eyes telling me I how good I look, even if they don’t really mean it.

Want porn on your iPhone? There’s not an app for that.

Because Apple has banned “adult-only content” from the iPhone app store, among the 100,000 apps available to iPhone users, not a one is “adults only.”

Google has also adopted rules for its own app store, the Android Market, to prevent app developers from selling pornographic applications for use on cell phones running Google’s Android operating system.

But Android apps need not necessarily go through the official Android Market.

One company, MiKandi, has taken advantage of the open platform by launching the first mobile store for porn.

Mikandi’s 18-and-over-only apps aren’t available through the Android Market, and instead must be purchased through the MiKandi Market, which can be downloaded from Mikandi.com.

According to Phandroid, the MiKandi Market is,

a portal for Android users to find, download and use adult themed applications in one central location. Likewise, it serves as a place where application developers can distribute their free or paid adult-themed locations without fear of being rejected from Android Market.

MiKandi’s adults-only apps are listed in categories that include Fun and Games, Adult News, Erotica, and Eye Candy.

As Phandroid notes, MiKandi is tapping into a potentially huge market opportunity:

There is a reason that pornography leads the internet in traffic and revenue and with everybody going after the mobile web, it’s a wonder that some enterprising adult company didn’t pursue this earlier.

iPhone lovers will not be totally forgotten: MiKandi is reportedly planning to offer its pornographic apps on jailbroken iPhones, and notes on its website, “Currently available for Android phones only, but other devices coming soon.”

1 Perfect Web Browser

I bought 1, Perfect Web Browser 2.7 for the iPhone for one reason and one reason only. My GMail account crashes Safari…every time, whether I invoke my inbox from the Google App, or from within Safari itself…crash! Complete lock up. I have to restart the iPhone to back out of it. Not good.

Besides, even before it crashes Safari, there is just no elegant way to select and delete blocks of text in the Safari compose view…at least not the lengthy text you need to select to trim a group posting when you reply. To do that, you need the more flexible compose view in Mail.

However, I really miss GMail’s threaded messages in the native iPhone App. Once you get used to threads in GMail, it is really hard to go back to a liner client like Mail.

Okay, to be honest, there was more reason I bought 1PWB. 1, Perfect Web Browser is currently on sale. I thought, “why not…I will give it a try, even just for GMail.”

And it works. It is fast, stable, has real tabs, and full screen view. You can select text beyond what is visable in the compose box, and the whole mobile GMail interface just looks great in it. It works so well I have not opened the native iPhone Mail client in two weeks. Mission certainly, clearly, cleanly, accomplished.

So, of course, I wondered how it would work with other Google web apps (which typically, in my experience,  cooperate only marginally with Safari).

Reader? Works so well in 1PWB that I have all but stopped using MobileRSS. Fast? Incredible.

Calendar? Works great! View by day or by Month…add events…whatever you need to do. And, again, fast!

While it is not Google, even the mobile FaceBook web interface works so well that it gives the native FaceBook client on the iPhone a run for its money.

1Perfect Web Browser opens SmugMug gallery pages that choke Safari. And opening a WordPress blog even invokes the mobile theme just as Safari does.

In fact, I have only found one flaw in 1Perfect Web Browser (well, maybe two). 1) There is no way to make it the default browser on the iPhone (not 1PWB’s fault…a limitation of the iPhone OS) so all links from other apps still open in Safari, and 2) copy and paste is not implemented for web page text. Minor stuff.

Other than that it is really pretty close to perfect. One Perfect Web Browser for the iPhone!

lately ustream has been coming out with apps whether it is for streaming or viewing. So far they have covered mostly every platform. There is android which you have streaming and viewing,and iphone same as android streaming and viewing. So there are really only three more platforms to cover and so far qik has windows and blackberry. They are going to have to take that market away from qik which I don’t think is going to hard seeing that ustream has more members and more options in terms of streaming. So never know soon you may see one for blackberry or palm next.

Tweetie 2.1, the latest version of the popular iPhone Twitter client, went live in the app store today. As we mentioned in our preview earlier this week, new features include support for Twitter Lists, the new TwitterTwitter retweets feature and geolocation. The new version is free to existing Tweetietweetie 2 users. As we wrote in our complete review: Lists support is a big deal and thus far, it looks like Tweetie 2 for the iPhone handles the process in a very robust and intuitive way. When you click on the “More” tab in Tweetie 2, you are now presented with a listing of every list you subscribe to (whether you created it or just subscribe to it), making it easy to view the contents of that list with one click… Twitter’s native retweeting feature was implemented in many of the beta versions of Tweetie 2, but was disabled in the first shipping version because the feature hadn’t been rolled out extensively. Now that the new Retweet system is in full effect, it’s back in Tweetie 2. When you view your profile, you now have an option to view your retweets, retweets by others, and even your tweets, retweeted.

Hi,

when editing the cell value, you have to press the return button from the keyboard to make the changes applicable to the appropriate cell.

In Version 2.0.1 now each change in the text field will automatically change the appropriate cell value.

That will make cell editing much more comfortable and easier.

The version 2.0.1 has been uploaded to Apple today. I hope to get it reviewed within the next 14 days. Please keep patience.
