Every year it’s part of my job at PlayNetwork to come up with a list of top albums and overall assessment of music trends for the year. Below is my brief review of what I felt was a pretty landmark year for electronic music in the US and in general. Barring any incredible releases over the next month, these are my picks for the year. Keep in mind this list is strictly made up of albums; not EPs, 12’s or remixes (i.e 95% of the electronic music I purchased this year).

2009 in Review : Binary Pop, Warp’s Legacy, Dub Mutations and the Return of Sexy Dance Music

2009 has been an incredibly innovative year in relation to music production. Artists like Animal Collective, Fever Ray, Royksopp and Moderat have proven once and for all that digital beats and electronic sound design can appeal to a pop audience that otherwise wouldn’t find themselves listening to “electronic music”.

This year also marks the 20 year anniversary of the greatest electronic music label (arguably greatest label) of all time, Warp Records, which has had an exceptional year across the board with strong indie releases from Grizzly Bear and Maximo Park as well as strong releases from their more obscure electronic artists like Tim Exile and Clark. Warp’s 20th anniversary box set is not only one of the best reviewed collections of they year, it’s also a brilliant testament to the label’s vast catalog of ground breaking artists (i.e. Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Jamie Lidell, Nightmares on Wax, Prefuse 73, Autechre, Broadcast, Plaid, Battles, Squarepusher, etc).

In addition, 2009 witnessed the rise of Dubstep as a respected genre in the US through acclaimed UK labels like Hyperdub (Burial, Kode9, Joker, Zomby, Flying Lotus) and Tectonic (2562, Martyn, DJ Pinch, Benga) both of whom continue to blur the boundaries between Grime, Dub, West Coast Hip Hop and Detroit Techno. With the avid support of tastemakers like BBC Radio 1’s Mary Anne Hobbs and Low End Theory’s Daddy Kev (Alpha Pup Records) UK Dubstep and West Coast Glitch Hop / Hip Hop have both become quintessential styles on the electronic music frontline in the US. From Burning Man to this year’s Movement festival in Detroit, Dubstep and Glitch Hop have fully emerged in 2009 as a staple sound in North America.

Another emerging trend has been the Deep House and Tech House revival, which has been experiencing a resurgence the past few years as club-goers have tired of the heady, sterility of Minimal Techno and the frenetic, over the top sound of Electro House. Artists like Gui Boratto, Voodeux, Pezzner, Milton Jackson, Stimming, Mode D, Catz n Dogz, DJ T and Dixon have all helped in keeping underground dance music both sexy and musical.

Overall 2009 has been a phenomenal year for technologically driven music, proving that creativity is truly catching up with the tools used for musical expression in the digital age.

Один мужчина приостановил машинку в неположенном месте. То ли "сломался", то ли элементарно оборзел. Тут идет сотрудник дорожно-постовой службы. Начало разговоры традиционное:

- Сержант… Вы не соблели… Права… Штраф…

С ними полемизировать в принципе напрасно, однако мужчина наш уперся: не вино-о-о-о-вен. Слово из-за словечко. Беседа теснее мин. 30 продолжается. Зрители появились. Чуть никак не ставки совершают – нежели кончится. У постового пена на лбу выступила. По очам следовательно, этак ему охото в облике главного довода жезл в ход запустить. Еле сдерживается.

И здесь мужчина, вероятно, искушенный в словесных уличных боях, достает книгу а также тычет ею постовому в лицо:

- Читай, будто прописано. «Правила дорожного а также уличного движения». Движе-е-ния. А я СТОЮ!!!

Постовой этак а также обмер. А придя в себя, отпустил мужика-то, но пообещал при последующей встрече в отсутствии вступлений шлепнуть на месте.

Забывчивая

Я страшно рассеянная. Когда дочь у меня еще малая была и ездила в коляске, я во время прогулки всё время проявляла, будто что-то забыла.

Вот единожды приняла решение намериться как надлежит. Одела ребёнка, проверила, всё ли на ней, будто обязано существовать. Взяла назализованный платочек, расчёску, соску, зонт, водонепроницаемый чехол для коляски. Пакет а также кошелёк – зайти в магазин. Мобильный телефонный аппарат, ежели супруг позвонит. Резиновую игрушку а также бутылку воды, ежели дочь глотать захотит. Короче, вроде как ничто никак не забыла.

Жутко удовлетворенная собой, выкатываюсь с коляской во двор и поворачиваю сообразно течению к торговому центру… Как внезапно меня окликают бабули во дворе:

- Лиля, – узнают они, – будто это ты с порожней коляской вышла?!

Able10 celebrates 10 years of Ableton and to celebrate there’s free upgrades, special offers etc. plus some free Live Packs from artists such as Adam Freeland, Apparat, Swayzak and several others.

These Live Packs need the latest version of Ableton, which is 8.0.9.

There doesn’t seem to be that much in 8.0.9 as is shown at http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=128509 
but I’ve downloaded it and its all worked nicely so far.

Ableton Live właśnie obchodzi swoje dziesiąte urodziny w związku z czym przygotował dla swoich użytkowników zestaw dzisięciu presetów, przygotowanych przez “gwiazdy”. Mum, Swayzak, Thavius Back, Apparat, Adam Freland i inni pokleili bity w Live’ie. Czasem widać rombek warsztatu, czasem nie. Za to wavy zawsze się przydadzą .

Today marks the twentieth anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall, which effectively was the Fall of Communism in Germany. The wall was built in 1961 and wasn’t pulled down until the 9th of November 1989. With me having a German grandmother i’ve always had a keen interest in all things German from a young age and have been told many stories about the Berlin wall by my Gran and my mum.

Seeing as this isn’t a history lesson though i’m not going to waffle on about the Berlin Wall, i’ll get to the point, this weeks list is a collection of German bands/artists, mainly hailing from Berlin but some from other areas. And also included in the list is one song about the Wall itself.

Het is weer concertjestijd. Woehoe! Vandaag kreeg ik bericht van de Bassist: donderdag gaan we naar Motorpsycho! Altijd fijn, mensen die je goed nieuws komen brengen op je vervelende vrijdag. En dan meteen een van mijn favoriete bands ook nog. Dat werkte beter tegen mijn is-het-nog-geen-weekend-dip dan cup-a-soup. En dat wil wat zeggen natuurlijk. Ik kan u wegens gebrek aan goed materiaal online niet het beste laten horen, maar vooruit: luistert u even mee? Dan kan ik u meteen vertellen waarom ik Motorpsycho zo leuk vind. Dat is namelijk niet alleen omdat ze uit Noorwegen komen, toch wel een van mijn favoriete landen, ook al ben ik er pas een keer geweest. Dat is ook omdat ze echt alles kunnen. Stevig gitaarwerk, depressieve noise, mooie ballads en happy surfermuziek, ze draaien nergens hun hand voor om. Ik vóel die muziek gewoon. Elk akkoordje sluipt direct in mijn zenuwen in. Heerlijk.

De Bassist was brenger van nog meer goed nieuws vandaag, want hij herinnerde me ook aan het concert van I am Kloot volgende week. Dat ik dat bijna was vergeten! Hoe kon ik! Over dit bandje schreef ik al eerder. Gelukkig was ik nog op tijd om een kaartje te kopen. En zo waren er ineens twee concerten binnen een week! Ha! En onder het mom: nu je toch kaartjes aan het kopen bent heb ik toen ook maar meteen een kaartje gehaald voor Apparat. Weliswaar op een zondag, maar vooruit, dat is een live-set wel waard. En zo werd een saaie week zomaar ineens een drieklapper. Donderdag, zondag en woensdag bandjes kijken. Jeu!

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads Will Roll (A-Trak remix)

Beginnen doen we deze editie met deze splinternieuwe remix van A-Trak (ook bekend als de man die Kanye “Voice of a Generation” West voorziet van beats). Dit is zonder twijfel één van zijn meest geslaagde remixes: hij behoudt de lekkere vocals en zet er een stevige clubbeat op die ergens in het midden opbouwt tot een mooie climax zonder al te veel op Crookers te willen lijken. Royksopp – This Must Be It (Apparat Remix)

Na de drukke tour in de zomer met Moderat had Apparat blijkbaar toch nog tijd om een mooie remix af te leveren voor Röyksopp. Een gebroken drumsequence houdt de spanning er bijna dubstep-gewijs tot opzwepende technobeats een climax doen vermoeden die dan komt in de vorm van een break waarin we alleen die prachtige vocals van Karin Dreijer nog horen (The Knife/Fever Ray). Lieten zich trouwens ook verleiden tot een remix van “This Must Be It”: *diepe adem* Thin White Duke, Moguai, Rex The Dog, TBS, Maxime Dangles, Danton Eprom, Pete Herbert, Lethmojoe en Florian Meindl.

The Subs – Mitsubitchi

Een nieuwe van The Subs! Fuck That Shit? Zeker niet. Deze track vol Japanse synthjes en vocals zal U alleszins nog geregeld horen dus kan U evengoed zelf al eens horen wat de sympathieke Gentenaars ervan gebakken hebben. Een mp3 kan trouwens volledig gratis gedownload worden via SoundCloud.

Ou Est Le Swimming Pool – Dance The Way I Feel

Het is definitief, de jaren ‘80 zijn terug. Deze nieuwe band mengt de oude synthesizers met een catchy poptune die we nog voor het einde van de song allemaal meezingen. Minder dansbaar als gewoonlijk maar deze moest ik gewoon meegeven.

I have been listening to the new Body Language Mix by Germany´s Modeselektor quite a bit these last few weeks. It´s a compelling mix of techno, dub step, house and indie rock seamlessly put together by what is one of the greatest dj duos out there. I present a few of the highlights from the mix, but frankly they all sound better within the confines of the mix. So do yourself a favor a buy the mix HERE.

The outstanding Kilchurn Sessions by Todos, just keep coming. We’re at number 7 and disappointment isn’t a word this guy knows. Once again the tracklisting reads like a dream festival line-up. A heavy dose of Sigur Ros / Jonsi & Alex, a classic from FSOL, one of my favourite M83 tracks, all ending on a great edit of Orbital’s Halcyon.

El sábado estuvimos en el Razz para ver a Apparat, que era la mitad de Moderat, los triunfadores del Sonar noche del sábado y autores de uno de los temas del año. Bueno pues al final, de Apparat, entre tanto arriba y abajo, solo vimos parte de la sesión, pero muy bien lo que escuchamos. Entre tanto trajín también pude comprobar que Quim Gutierrez es más bajo que yo, y yo no soy una percha, o sea que cada uno saque sus conclusiones… Antes de ir al Razz, nos miramos un poco el cartel, y vimos que en la sala 1 aka Razz Club, estaban estos chicos  británicos a los que varios medios comparaban con Daft Punk, Justice o Digitalism, pero para nada. Aunque lo que oímos en su myspace no sonaba nada mal, en concierto nos parecieron bastante gritones y decidimos que no nos haríamos nada fans. Ese “We Are Rockstars”, fue el primer single de su álbum que tiene el nombre superlargo, y que salió el pasado año, y de donde vienen las comparaciones con los anteriores grupos. Pues eso es el post de hoy.
