先日、ある方からTwitterのDMで、「とても図々しいのですが,何か導入の際のお勧めウィジェット(?),アプリの様なものが教えていただけませんか?」と声をかけていただきました。なんとMacBook Proを購入されたのだとのこと。おめでとうございます。ということで、僕が選んでMacBook Airに入れたアプリケーションをご紹介。

本当に必要だと思うアプリは、最初から入っている純正のものでだいたいまかなえてしまうのが、Mac OS Xの良いところだと思います。また、最近はウェブサービスがアプリケーションに変わりうる場合が多いですから、最初に入れておきたいアプリというのは、結局あまり多くはありませんでした。

「MacBook Airは文章を書くために使いたい」と思って買ったMacですから、自然と僕のチョイスもそんな感じにまとまってしまいました。では、早速それぞれを見ていきたいと思います。

まずは、iWork。これは毎年アップデートを重ねている、アップル謹製のオフィススイートです。PagesもNumbersも某M$オフィスに比べて、圧倒的な使いやすさがあります。しかしながら、僕が最もMacのアプリケーションで好きなものがKeynoteです。

見てください、この美しいテーマの数々。このKeynoteを一言で言い表すとしたら、いわゆる「スティーブ・ジョブズのプレゼンを作るアプリケーション」です。同様のものにPower Pointがありますが、使い勝手も仕上がり具合も、まさに雲泥の差。なかなか機会は少ないのですが、僕はこのKeynoteでプレゼンをするのが大好きなんです。

次は、TweetDeck。これは、Adobe Airで動くので実はMacでもWindowsでも動作します。すでに生活の一部であるTwitterは、もちろんiPhoneから呟くことが圧倒的に多いのですが、Macの前にいるときはこのアプリを立ち上げておくのです。

このTweetDeckが優れているのは、カラム表示が出来ること。僕がFollowしている人は現時点で400名弱ですが、これだけいるとタイムラインはグイグイ進んでいきますので、誰かの呟きは一瞬で流れ去ってしまいます。そこで、グループごとのカラムを作って、気になる人の呟きは見逃さないようにしているんです。

お次は、WriteRoom。この、まさに物を書くために作られたWriteRoomのことは、MacBook Airを購入した直後に書きましたので詳しくはそちらの記事に譲ります。書くことに集中出来る良アプリで、アイデアを出したり、思考を整理するときに、よく使います。

WriteRoomつながりで、今使っているアプリケーションに集中したいときに活躍するのが、Isolatorです。これは、最も前面に出ているアプリケーションの後ろに、フィルターをかけて、見えにくくする（設定はいろいろ弄れる）ためのものです。たとえば、こんな感じに。

実は、Windowsから初めてMacの世界に来たとき、どうして「ウインドウの全画面表示」という考え方がMacにはないんだろう、と思いました。目の前の作業に集中したいときには、他のものを目に入れたくはないですよね。アップルなりに、アプリ内での全画面表示を一部導入したり、Spacesなどを提案したりしていますが、僕はこのIsolatorのような表現の仕方に美しさを感じます。

次はアプリというより、日本語入力プログラムのかわせみ。これについても、先日の記事を参考にしてください。その後、非常に快適に使えています。

ちなみに、物書堂さんのホームページでは変換候補がフォントが「ことえり」と異なってゴシックになっていますが、これは設定で変えることが出来ます。最も美しい日本語フォントだと思っているヒラギノ明朝体を、僕は使っています。

お次は、Dashboard用のWidget。このDashboardは「普段は使わないけど、ちょっとみたい情報を必要なときだけサッと表示する」機能。Mac OS X 10.4 Tigerから搭載されたこのDashboardには当時はかなりたくさんのWidgetが登場しました。ただ、iPhoneアプリが登場してからというもの、（世間的にも僕の中でも）盛り上がりはそっちに移動。最近は、使う機会も減ってしまいましたが、必須なのがこのApple Logo。

実はこれ、なんの利用価値もないAppleの林檎マークを表示するだけのWidget。でも、自分にとっては大切です。何故なら、普段はMacBook Airの背中にある林檎マークを、このWidgetによって画面で見ることが出来るのですから！たとえば、こんな感じで。

そういう意味では、「欲しいものを必要なときにサッと取り出す」というDashboardの意義に添っている使い方が出来ていると思うのです（笑）。ちなみにこのApple Logoは、作者のサイトからすでに削除されてしまっています。ただ、インターネット上でよく探すと見つかると思いますので、興味のある方はがんばって探してみてください。

最後の二つは、未来派図画工作さんの作るMacの代名詞的なスクリーンセーバー。

「二十世紀ボヤージ」は非常に有名。宇宙から見た地球を背景に、20世紀以降の出来事や名言が、スクリーンに浮かび上がっては消える、素敵なスクリーンセーバーです。これが欲しいがためにMacを手に入れる人も多かったのではないでしょうか。

夜更けに、大好きなクラシック音楽を聴きながらぼんやりと二十世紀ボヤージを眺める、そんな時間の過ごし方もお勧めです。

後発で、比較的知名度は残念ながらそれほど高くないと思われるのが「少年少女オデッセイ」。僕はこちらも大好きです。活版印刷を彷彿させるイメージが差し込まれる中、世界の偉人たちとその偉業が、過去へ未来へと、時間軸のさかのぼったり降ったりしながら紹介されていきます。「この人とこの人が、実は同じ時代の人だったんだ」なんていう発見もある、他には無い、素敵なスクリーンセーバーです。

と、以上8つのアプリケーションが、僕にとっての最低限です。この他に、SafariやMail.appはもちろん、iPhotoやiCalもよく使います。iTunesももちろんなのですが、これは妻のiMacにデータを入れてある状態なので、MacBook Airではほとんど使っていないままです…。

そして、マイクロソフトのOffice 2008やParallels（まだ肝心のWindowsは入れていません）もいちおう入れています。が、Macを楽しむ、というか人生を楽しむためには、このくらいで良いんじゃないかなぁ、と思っています。

気がつけば、午前2時半を回りました。久しぶりに湯船につかって一週間の身体の疲れを癒した後に、夜空を見上げると…、なんと美しい満月なのでしょうか。寝る間を惜しんで、鈴虫の鳴く音しか聞こえない夜更けのマンションのベランダから、ついシャッター音を何枚もきってしまいました。（反省です。明日、マンションの掲示板に、「夜中に写真を撮らないでください！」ときっと貼り紙がされます。）

ところが、写真の腕は中途半端なMarrさんですから、夜景を綺麗に取る術を知りません。とりあえず、幾つかお見せできそうなものをアップします。

いやー、真ん丸できれいな満月です。うっとりしてしまいます。それにしてもこの恍惚感、デジャブです。あれれ、何かに似ているような…。

そうそう、見慣れたコレじゃないですか（笑）。おなじみ、僕のMacのDashboardにいるApple Logoです。

ということで、Macの話題に突入です。（タイトルで薄々気づいていたと思いますが、皆さん、すみません！）

というわけで、夜更けのMacBook Airから、仲秋の名月についての記事（？）でした。

Infectious revealed the winners of their Mac laptop skins design challenge “Cut To The Core”. The first prize was the design showcased above “ReCharged” by Jun Nuñez, with the Apple logo serving as the heart of a robot. Võtsin ette järjekordse katsetuse köögis ja otsustasin tavapärase tordi ostmise/tellimise asemel koogi ise valmistada (retsept postituse lõpus).

Põnevaks tegi asja muidugi see, et kook läks (peaaegu) paadunud Mac’i fännile. Ning kuna Mac ei ole tavaline ja koogisaaja samuti mitte, siis pidi ka kook saama eriline. Täpsemalt siis natuke hammustatud õuna kujuline. Nagu Mac’i logo.

Näiteks selline.

Koogi tegemiseks kaalusin tordipõhja küpsetamist biskviittaignast ja valmis tordipõhja ostmist. Nende kahe vahel valimisest päästis mind äkiline selgushetk, mis tuletas meelde köögikapis pesitseva tordipulbri. Mõeldud, tehtud!

Segasin tordipõhja ained kõik kenasti kokku, panin taigna ümmargusse vormi ja siis pooleks tunniks rahumeeli ahju.
Tordipõhjal lasin üleöö jahtuda, sest siis on teda parem töödelda.

Jahtunud tordipõhi sai kõigepealt lõigatud pooleks. Seejärel disainisin (loe:lõikasin väriseva käega) ümmargusest tordipõhjast Mac’i logole sarnaneva kujutise. Seejärel said mõlemad pooled immutatud kirsikompoti vedelikuga, vahele määritud kohupiima-vahukoore segu ja laotud kompotikirsse. Ühendasin kaks poolt ja peaaegu valmis ta oligi. Välja arvatud glasuur.

See oli koht, kus mul kondiitrikogemused puudusid täielikult ja seega veidi alt läksin. Tegin glasuuri valmis, jahutasin veidi ja mõtlesin kohe koogile kanda. Võta näpust. Voolas see glasuur mööda kooki ringi ja ei teinud seda nägugi, et sinna püsima jääda. Eeldasin, et kui kook on jahtunud, siis on kõik ok.
Kuna kooki ei olnud kohe sama moment vaja, siis jäi ta külmkappi ootama, koos glasuuri ülejäägiga, mida ma koogile ei suutnud kanda. Mõtlesin juba, et kui glasuur ei tööta, siis määrin järgmisel päeval lihtsalt vahukoort või kohupiima koogile.
Järgmisel päeval selgus, et glasuur oli kenasti paksemaks tõmbunud ja soostus koogilekandmisel minuga koostööd tegema.
NB! Glasuur ei seisnud külmkapis – seal oleks ta kõvaks tõmbunud.

Lõpptulemus sai umbes selline

Ja maitse oli ka üle ootuste mõnus. Kuna ma kohupiimale suhkrut ega midagi muud magustavat ei lisanud, siis ei tulnud kook ka üleliia magus. Selline täpselt paras sai

(seda õli ja vee kogust tuleb iga tordipulbri paki pealt eraldi vaadata)

Pool purki kirsikompotti (ilma kivideta)
400g potsik vanillikohupiimapastat (mul oli Alma oma)
vahukoort (määramatu kogus, sõltub maitsest)

Glasuur

150g valget shokolaadi (mina kasutasin Kalevi valge shokolaadi)
1,5dl vahukoort

Creative Bits has a great interview with Rob Janoff, the designer of the Apple logo. In it he discusses how he designed the logo, and his reasoning behind the design. Interestingly, he says the only direction he got from Steve Jobs was “Don’t make it cute.”

Ja ja, die lieben Chinesen und ihr Kopierwahn. Ich habe dazu ja vergangene Woche schon was gepostet. Nun habe ich im Internet die nächste Frechheit entdeckt: Das gesamte iPhone wurde kopiert und nachgebaut! Nur statt des Apple-Logos wurde frech ein Orangen-Logo draufgeklatscht…

So ein Fake: Zu sehen gibt es das Ganze auf der Seite von iOrgane. Man scheute wohl mehr einen Rechtsstreit mit Orange – deswegen diese schräge Schreibweise – als mit Apple selbst.

Auf die Rückseite wurde eine Orange – nebst Blatt – geklebt und das Telefon auch mit dem Kürzel “i” versehen. Selbst einige Logos der Programme wurden kopiert. Es ist allerdings einen ganzen Zacken dicker als Apples Original… Zu beachten aber: Diese Schiebeknöpfe am unteren Teil der Organe-Phones… Irgendwie haben sie den Nachbau dann ja wohl doch nicht auf die Reihe bekommen!

Ob Apple nun wirklich das iPhone bei “China Unicom” ab Sommer anbietet, solange im Land das Duplikat verramscht wird, darf bezweifelt werden. Ich find es echt nur noch dreist – die Chinesen haben offenbar null Respekt vor der Entwicklerleistung anderer und die Regierung nimmt das offenbar alles in Kauf!

Spannend zu wissen wäre ja, ob dieser “Klon” überhaupt funktioniert – mit Display und Software oder ob es nur ein optischer Klau ist… Einen Vorteil scheint dieses Gerät ja zu haben: Eine 32 GB Version. Aber ob die es wirklich wert ist???

Thank you, thank you, thank you to Michael Johnson on iPhone Alley for the recovery tip! This helped me recover from a botched firmware upgrade that left my iPhone stuck on the Apple logo by forcing my iPhone into recovery mode and allowing iTunes to “manually” reinstall the firmware:

As arcane as recovery mode sounds, it’s actually very simple:

Turn off your iPhone by holding the “Sleep/Wake” button for about five seconds and then sliding the red slider. If your iPhone is already off, there’s no need to turn it on and then off again. Once it’s turned off, press and hold the “Home” button and plug the iPhone into your Mac or PC. Keep holding the “Home” button until you see a dock cable pointing to the iTunes icon. iPhones running older software will display a yellow triangle and text which says “Please Connect to iTunes”. You can now release the Home button.

Open iTunes (if it’s not already open) and you will be told that “iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode”. Click “OK” and you will be taken to the iPhone pane. Click restore and you’re done, it’s that easy! Depending on the extent of your iPhone’s ills, it may take some time to do a full restore. Once you’re done, you should again have a perfectly working iPhone.

“California, here we come!!!”

Sure, there are companies who will customize the color of your laptop, or build it for you, but if you are searching for the ultimate in customized chic, look no further than West Linn, Oregon. Computer Choppers, which started out as a hobby but soon gained international fame for their creations, will plate your laptop (and many other electronics) in precious metals and construct the logo out of gemstones. Their jawdroppingly gorgeous designs include a 24k Gold and sapphires MacBook Air – the entire laptop is plated in gold, and the rainbow-colored Apple logo is made of sapphires. Wow. But we are focusing on pink laptops here, and oh yes, they do that as well – using rose gold. Stunning beyond words, the color of their rose gold has to be seen; the best way I can describe it is a shiny, pale, dusty-coppery-pink. Their website showcases an iMac entirely plated in rose gold that makes you want to pick up the phone and put in an order right away.

Even if you can’t buy a pink Mac laptop, at least you can have pink accessories. The pocket-sized, Razer notebook mouse for Macs is adorable in hot pink. For those of us who like to munch on a little something while working, the transparent pink silicone keyboard cover from MacTop is ideal – it’s cute, removable and washable. Case-Mate makes beautiful, formfitting carrying cases in Italian leather (with a cutout so the Apple logo still shows). Check out the tea rose pink case for 15” MacBooks, or the fabulously stylish crocodile-embossed, classic pink case for MacBook Air.

Established as Apple Computer, Inc., on April 1, 1976, The company kept its longer title until 2007, when it changed to Apple, Inc. Started in Cupertino, California, the American corporation was incorporated on January 3, 1977.

Founded by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne, Apple, Inc., designs and manufactures consumer electronics and software for the electronics. Apple products include laptops, desktops, numerous iPods, and the iPhone; while software includes the Mac OS X Operating System, Final Cut Pro, iLife, and iTunes.

Apple, Inc., has 20,000 employees and 200 retail stores in 5 countries as of 2007. The company also boasts $24 Billion in annual sales.  Apple, Inc., also has an online store as well as iTunes which sells music, movies, audio books, pod casts, TV shows, and iPod games.

The company’s first logo was designed by Jobs and Wayne. The logo depicted Sir Isaac Newton sitting under an apple tree. The logo did not last long, and was quickly replaced by a rainbow colored apple silhouette drawn by Rob Janoff. The apple, very similar to the logo used currently, had a distinctive bite in it. The logo was revamped in 1998 and was given a monochromatic color. The Apple logo is one of the most recognizable brand logos in the world. Apple includes its logo as sticker with the purchase of the company’s products.

The first Apple slogan was “Byte Into An Apple.” In the beginning, Apple used singular slogans for the company as a whole; however, today the company uses individual slogans for each of their products.

To introduce the Macintosh computer in 1983, Apple created an 18-page brochure that was sent out with a number of magazines. For a special post-election edition of Newsweek in 1984, Apple purchased each of the 39 ad pages in the magazine – spending $2.5 Million.

Also in 1984, Apple ran a promotion titled “Test Drive A Macintosh,” where people could take home a computer for 24 hours and then return it.

1984 is most famous for Apple’s Super Bowl advertisement to introduce the personal computer. Aired in the third quarter of Super Bowl XVIII, the $1.5 Million commercial, titled “1984,” was directed by Ridley Scott. The commercial was modeled after George Orwell’s novel 1984.

The commercial showed a heroine, Anya Major saving humanity from conformity – or “Big Brother,” – meant to depict IBM. The voiceover in the commercial stated “On January 24, Apple Computers will introduce Macintosh. And you’ll see why 1984 wasn’t like 1984.”

Apple’s Super Bowl commercial in 1985 was far less successful. The commercial, titled “Lemmings.” Created for the launch of Mac Office, the ad depicted blindfolded business people following each other off of a cliff. The last man in line stops and pulls his blindfold off, while the voiceover states, “You Can Look Into It…Or you can go on with business as usual.” The commercial was developed into a print advertisement for newspaper.

Apple consumers are unusually free thinking and unusually devoted. Surveys by J.D. Power show that Apple has the highest brand and repurchased loyalty of any other computer manufacturer. Apple’s consumers are youthful, artistic, creative, and well-educated. These consumers react best to artistic, free-thinking advertising messages. Each new Apple store opening draws crowds of thousands who stand in line for hours.

Apple is an environmentally conscious company in four specific areas: product and package design, manufacturing, energy efficiency, and recycling.

In the late 1990’s, Apple’s New York advertising agency TBWA/Chiat/Day compiled the “Think Different” campaign. The campaign consisted of both television and print advertisements. Running for 60 seconds, the commercials included black and white footage of Albert Einstein, Bob Dylan, Martin Luther King Jr., Richard Branson, John Lennon, R. Buckminister, Fuller, Thomas Edison, Muhammad Ali, Ted Turner, Maria Callas, Amelia Earhart, Alfred Hitchcock, Martha Graham, Jim Hensen with Kermit, Frank Lloyd Write, and Picasso. The commercial ended with a close up of a young girl opening her eyes – and therefore seeing the possibilities in front of her.

A shortened, 30 second, version of the commercial aired during the series finale of Seinfeld. Rather than close with the shot of the young girl, the commercial ended with Jerry Seinfeld.

Print versions of the campaign made appearances in magazines including Time and Newsweek. Some of the ads referenced products, while others just displayed the Apple logo and the current tagline “Think Different.”

The “Think Different” campaign was created almost entirely in house by TBWA/Chiat/Day in Los Angeles. The slogan was brought back three times after its retirement to be placed in ads on Apple’s online Home Page:

2000 – When Jimmy Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize

2005 – When Rosa Parks died

2007 – When Al Gore won the Nobel Peace Prize

Numerous parodies of the campaign have been created and can be found online.

In 1990, Apple released the “What’s On Your PowerBook?” campaign. The company’s print ads and TV spots featured celebrities explaining how they use their PowerBook and how the PowerBook helps them with their lives.

In 1995, Apple created print and TV ads that responded to the introduction of Microsoft’s Windows 95 Operating System.

In 1998, the iMac slogan became “I Think, Therefore iMac.”

In 2002, Apple coined the term “Switcher.” A Switcher is someone who switches from Microsoft Office to the Mac Operating System. The “Switch” commercial showed real customers explaining their switch. The television commercials were directed by Errol Morris, and both the TV and print ads directed consumers to the Apple Website. The “Switch” actors in the US were different than those used for the “Switch” commercials in Japan. As with the “Think Different” campaign, numerous parodies of the “Switch” campaign can be found online.

Current commercials for the iPod show dark silhouettes dancing against brightly colored backgrounds and holding visible, white iPods. The commercials have been created for both print and television.

The iPod Nano commercials have a black background, with the iPod Nano glowing to show that the newest iPod Nano’s are colored.

The songs in the television commercials are both by known and relatively unknown artists. Some of the ads also feature the silhouettes of celebrities, including Eminem, U2, Jet, Wynton Marsalis, Ceasars, and Bob Dylan.

The ads in the iPod campaign have a consistent, unified style that can be found in print, television, posters, and public transportation wraps.

In 2006, Apple introduced the “I’m a Mac, I’m a PC” campaign. The television commercials are directed by Phil Morrision, with actors Justin Lang (Mac), from Accepted, and John Hodgeman (PC), from the Daily Show. The idea was created by TBWA/Media Arts/Lab. The premise of the ads is that Mac can do everything PC can do, but Mac can do it quicker and safer, with more creativity and versatility.

In the commercials, Mac wears more casual, laid-back attire, while Mac Wears business attire and is uptight and overly concerned with work.

The US version of the ads air in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, while different actors are used for similar ads in Spain, Japan and the UK. In Japan, the country’s famous comedy duo The Rahmens, star in the commercials, while the spots in the UK use famous UK comedy duo Mitchall and Webb.

There are 42 different versions of the commercials in the US with 8 additional online-only spots which run for 20 seconds and reference online ad features. There are 12 spots in Japan and 15 in the UK. Not surprisingly, there are numerous parodies of the spots online.

Apple also advertises on Free Rice – a program online created in 2007 to fight world hunger. Apple is also in discussions with New York Yacht Club to sponsor America’s Cup.

We’re, probably so full

of knowledge; that it could

make us all, very sick

by what we learn to invent,

with it!  Perhaps,

God already saw the thoughts of men;

from the beginning.

He saw us all with the forbidden fruit

of good and evil. Which this is, what we can

do with our witty little computers….

Create good, and then destroy it with evil!

( No offense people, I just saw something sitting

in the symbolism of a half eaten apple, and

I just couldn’t resist, writing about it. )
