Iditarod Leadership by Chris Fuller. This free iPod App(Application) is one beautiful thing in every

Iditarod Leadership by Chris Fuller. This free iPod App(Application) is one beautiful thing in every sense of the word: Looks, design and content . This App is powered by Tapstack and uses the leadership premise that “If you are not the lead dog the view never changes”, well our society will not function properly if everyone wants to be the chief, and Mr. Fuller seems to understand this so Mr. Fuller has a website that zeroes his work to be of service to team leaders and works on that scale. He points ” Thermometers in business are those people who consistently communicate issues or problems (what the Temp. is) without adjustment or solution of the issue or dilemma. Leaders need to be Thermostats, people who fully understand the reality as it exists today AND take ownership of the situation. They are fully engaged in creating and implementing the solution”

Well Apple has done this very well with the iPod Touch and the iPhone, through Apps the computing world has been revolutionized beyond the turning back point. The iPod Touch/iPhone has become a standard platform for How OS(Operating Systems) will behave by providing focused solutions to the user.

I no longer depend on my laptop to stay connected while on the-go, the iPod Touch has superbly filled in tha role; It is easier and friendlier to use, faster browser, able to quickly sync my PIM and mail, news content is tailored to my needs from Bloomberg, Y! Finance or CNN Money to Twitdeck or Facebook Apps to Wordperess PDF readers ESPN or SI to WindFinder to internet Music blah blah.

One can read any of Shakespeare’s play or Alice in Wonderland for free as well Thomas Paine’s Common Sense or few of Verdi’s Opera librettos. All beautifully displayed in vibrant colors.

This is the 4th time that Apple and Steve Jobs in particular taps the secret vein of changing history. 1st he did it with Steve Wozniak and Espinoza to create the Apple II computer and by allowing 3 party vendors to have access to its design they became the beneficiary of a wealth of opportunities.

Actually what happened is that they opened the gate for a “Watershed of Technologies” like the airplane industry, to develop and connecting with higher education was a shrewd move the 2 Steve’s knew from how DEC(Digital Equipment Corporation) had given away free PDP-11 to power house Universities like MIT, CalTech, Stanford, Cornel created and cemented a sub-industry dependent on a need neglected by IBM.

The 2nd instance was marked by the introduction of the MacIntosh, a computer that was an improvement on the Lisa which used a then revolutionary concept in OS: real windows, a technology borrowed!? from Xerox.

The 3d instance was the introduction of the iPod. A device that invented by Tony Fedell, an independent inventor, a man from Rochester NY who wanted to improve how a device interacted with Napster.

The 4th of course is the iPhone/iPod Touch, an invention that has already changed the computer industry. In my personal opinion is the plataform best suited to deliver Cloud Computing.

I forsee the Cloud devices being an improved iPodTouch with a screen that has about 35-50 square inches more in real estate or about 2-3 inches wider and longer and the providers being Apple and Google with an Android OS.

Newsweek Magazine published an issued devoted to the impact that the iPod Touch/iPhone will have in businesses, new industry and employment. In an article: “There is gold in them iPhones” the explanations continue

Also in an article about the diversity and wealth of Apps “There’s an App for that” Daniel Lyons points out how mind blowing and how real this explosion of technological talent is. There is humor also like the App that caters to populist outrage with an App that allows you to stop the crooked bankers from escaping.

The advantage of the iPod Touch over the iPhone is that you are not tied down to the ball and chain of monthly payments, you buy it once and you’re done with it. Buy the Apps you need thats all. There are Apps from totally free to free lite versions of full Apps to 99 cents Apps all away through 4.99 to 12.99; with few exceptional special purpose Apps $25.00 (books for professionals)

Really ! what are you waiting for? Get yours soon.

Here’s a taste of how literary publishing is evolving, in the iPhone era.

“Bard’s Dream” is a new digital comic app which delivers Shakespeare’s classic play “The Midsummer Night’s Dream” in full iPhone glory.

Besides being gorgeously illustrated, this app offers an option to experience the story either in modern English, or the original Shakespearean language.

Read a nice user review here, and purchase the full version by clicking on the App Store link below.

Twinkler Software have released a pretty cool application that controls the WiFi status and saves battery power. It works by remembering the location of your WiFi hotspots, so you can leave WiFi off and save battery. When you enter the WiFi zone, WiFi Hero will boot up your WiFi connection and connect you. It also has 2 other modes for changing your WiFi status including screen and charging status.

1. Location Based. In this mode, WiFi Hero will automatically learn the location of the WiFi Hotspot you are currently connected to, and when WiFi is not connected (you are out of range of this Hotspot), WiFi Hero will automatically turn off WiFi – and when you come back to the same Hotspot location, it will automatically turn on WiFi.

2. Screen Status. In this mode, WiFi Hero will automatically turn on WiFi when the screen is on and automatically turn off WiFi when the screen is off – making this very useful when you use your Blackberry to browse the web.

3. Charging Status. In this mode, WiFi Hero will automatically turn on WiFi when the device is on charge, and automatically turn off WiFi when device is not charging and on battery power.

Of course, the Apps Store is the best part. Everyday I’m searching for applications that’ll ho

Of course, the Apps Store is the best part. Everyday I’m searching for applications that’ll hopefully blow my mind, whether it’s useful tools or wacky games I can play on the toilet.
The one thing I’ve found is that the U.S.-born apps outnumber the Japanese ones. That’s because not as many people in Japan have an iPhone. Unlike here, Apple has tough competition in Japan. So when it comes to making apps, they’re not necessarily made for the iPhone. But that just makes me want to seek out those few cool Japanese apps even more!

Here are some of the more interesting ones:

Amamiya Momo ($2.99)

Meet Momo, a girl dressed in a cat outfit who lives inside your iPhone. You can poke her cheek, pat her head and even lift her skirt. Momo comes with 200 pre-programmed behavior patterns, so depending on how you treat her she can turn from happy to angry very quickly. Apparently, her mood changes depending on the time of day, so watch out!

iBBQLite (free trial)

The object of this game is to cook meat on the grill and hand it to customers. If it’s overcooked they’ll say in Japanese, “Ugh, this is awful!” If it’s undercooked, they’ll say, “What the heck is this!” So be sure to grill it just right. It’s a simple game but oh so addicting.

Harlequin novels (free trial)

There’s now a handful of romance-filled manga series at the disposal of your fingertips. Just do a keyword search for “harlequin” and out comes English-translated stories of love and heartbreak. The first chapter is free, but once they grab your attention you’ll have to pay to read the rest.

LadioTouch (free)

Now you can listen to Japanese radio! Up until now it’s been pretty limited to anime songs, but the range of genres have slowly widened. With this app I can now listen to one of Tokyo’s most popular stations, J-Wave, along with hundreds of other internet radio stations. Unfortunately, the listing is mostly in Japanese.

So what’s your favorite iPhone application? Let me know!

Right now, I have 17 updates waiting:

Yeah, there are a few kids games on my phone still… thats because I used to let my daughter play them as a means of obtaining the holy grail of parenthood – silence. :) Now that she is a fly 2 years old, I gave her my first generation iPhone.

Where was I? Oh yeah…

I like that feeling I get when I see that little red badge adorn my App Store icon. I love it so much, that I never actually see it disappear. The higher the number in that red sphere of ‘new and improved,’ the better!

It’s such a strange habit. I can’t bring myself to actually instal the updates. It’s as if I am waiting for the mother of all updates to post. But why? I still wouldn’t even update them! I would leave the fresh updates sit only to serve my own joy. I know I should download the latest fix to stop my RSS reader from bugging out (pun totally intended) but I just can’t do it.

Honestly, I have my favorite apps and those are the ones I really look out for on a near daily basis. Each day, I probably check the store for updates about 6 times. Sad really, because I should be doing other more productive things like LEARNING HOW TO CODE!

So what say you? Do you like racking up updates like this? Do you blindly go forth and download them immediately? Do you update from the phone or from your computer? Comments?

With Facebook, Twitter, and other social media growing, changing, and expanding, other sites like LinkedIn have lurked at the edge of our radar.

Until now.

According to mashable.com, LinkedIn is adopting a social media platform, which opens up outside applications’ access to LinkedIn’s data. Yes, connections like these have hatched Farmville and Mafia Wars in Facebook, but LinkedIn’s generally professional feel will likely lend itself to different apps.

TweetDeck will also be launching LinkedIn integration. Finally, LinkedIn will gain a competitive edge with other social media and give journalists and other professionals yet another platform on which to network.
Like anything, people will have to learn how the new LinkedIn updates work and get used to them, hopefully adapting and thriving with the new technology.

It may be delayed, but this upgrade to a not-so-popular website will spell change in the virtual world.

Do you think that these LinkedIn changes will give people even more to do when they surf the Net? How do you think this integration will effect Facebook and Twitter? Do you think these upgrades will push LinkedIn to the forefront, or just give people one more thing to ignore?

Hey guys so I recently got the new Blackberry Curve 8900 from AT&T and had to do a review of it

Hey guys so I recently got the new Blackberry Curve 8900 from AT&T and had to do a review of it against my main phone the iPhone 3Gs. Now even thought I’m doing this review let me first say that the purpose of the phones are soooo different. The iPhone is main purpose is for users who want a fun and entarining phone where as the Blackberry is more of a right down to business phone. So here we go my break down of some of the main features of the phones.

Browser iPhone

To me the iPhone has a browser like no other. The curve browser is generally slower and takes a lot more to get to a site like zooming in to click links as well as not as full featured browser as the iPhone.

Music iPhone

The main reason the iPhone has the best music is because its made by Apple which started the entire music player trend. The blackberry really comes no where close.

Signal iPhone

Now the Curve is currently not 3G for AT&T but even with that calls on the Curve are not ever pleasant and you can hear a lot of background noise like the wind and the calls aren’t very clear. iPhone has a much better call quality.

Speed Draw

This is actually a tie both phones offer quick responses to opening different functions on the phone.

Apps iPhone

The iPhone wins hands down with apps. Blackberry has nothing close to the ease of the app store and apps on the iPhone. Even apps like Tweetie and easiser to launch and use then lets say Twitterberry. Apps on the Curve are not as full featured like iPhones Apps.

Design Blackberry

I have to say Blackberry has a much nicer design then the iPhone. Its sleek and holds nice in the hand and looks more valuable where as the iPhone looks rather simple and plain.

Keyboard Draw

I have to say I enjoy both. iPhone touch keys are better spaced but can be a little hard to judge where as the Blackberry keys are nice to have an actual key but are a little too close together and cramped.

Camera Blackberry

The Blackberry Curve 3.2 Megapixel and flash camera out do the iPhones camera and provide the better picture.

Here it is, yet another blog about iPhone and iPod Touch apps (does anyone need to be reminded whose

Here it is, yet another blog about iPhone and iPod Touch apps (does anyone need to be reminded whose trademarks these are?) by yet another intrepid programmer wanting to make it where the odds are about like getting rich on Amway (and we KNOW whose trademark that is).

Seriously, in spite of the atrocious language (Objective C) and the crude development system (xcode and Interface Builder), and Apple’s mindless drivel they call documentation, making apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch is actually kind of fun. Currently, I have one up on the App Store, a little number called Astro Calculator. It’s a first effort which provides the data to create horoscopes given birth date and location. People have bought it, and I thank them. However, to borrow the words of the late Louis B. Mayer, the famed movie mogul, people have been staying away from it in droves.

Thats okay, though. It’s a start, and contrary to the horror stories I have heard, my contract got approved in 2 hours, and the app got through review and got approved in 10 days. The important thing is that there will be more to come. You can get a look at it if you like, at this website.

The biggest hurdle most of us developers face is figuring out what a lot of people will buy, and figuring out how to get the word out. Getting the word out is obviously part of what this blog is about. More importantly, it is my way of giving something back to the iPhone/iPod developer community. It is through various websites by third party developers that I have gotten quite a bit of the information I needed to get some of the software to work. Relying on the information Apple puts out is much like trying to have a conversation with a schizophrenic. So, there are probably plenty of budding programmers out there trying to get a start, and perhaps I can say something that helps, either technically related, or generally on getting an app conceived, accepted by the App Store, or promoted.

I’m not new to programming, having written my first computer program back in the early 60’s as an engineering undergraduate, and it ran. And no, we didn’t do it with rocks and papyrus back then. Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to be in your twenties and profoundly twitchy to do software. Working with iPhone apps is relatively new for me, however.

I started an intensive study of Objective C in June of 2009. I suspect that this language was created by the same schizo bunch that writes Apple’s documentation. But, it is enough like real C to get a handle on it. Then I did an application just for my own use on my own iPod Touch just to go through the motions of getting something from concept to actually running on a device. Astro Calculator was the first attempt to get something on the App Store. Now, enough practice, it is time to get serious.

The next project is going to be a reprise of a game I did back in the 80’s which was targeted at a Canadian online service. There will be a series of fictitious corporations whose fictitious stock you can invest your fictitious money in. (Yes, I ended a sentence in a preposition. Our language derives from the Saxon, never mind what the Normans say.) What I will add which I didn’t even know about in the 80’s is the ability to use various analytic techniques to choose when and what to buy and sell. This will include, but not necessarily be limited to things like moving averages, Bollinger Bands, and the like. The neat thing about iPhone graphics is that you can superimpose any number of layers over what is displayed on the screen. So in showing the price history of a stock, you can choose your analysis technique and put it over the stock’s price history to look for buy and sell signals.

Now since you won’t be trading in real money, you will only get fictitious rich, but by the same token you can’t lose your fictitious shirt either. It will be a good training ground for people who want to use technical analysis on stock trades but want to do it safely. It will be realistic in that you will have to pay a fictitious brokerage fee for trades. That’s actually an important piece of realism, since trading with technical analysis can get you to repeatedly buying and selling a stock as the buy and sell signals come up, but the brokerage fee will eat up any profits you might earn.

Now that’s the next biggie, and I’ll keep you posted here as to how it goes. Somewhere in the background, I want to satisfy my fascination with OpenGL and 3D modeling, so I’ll be giving some consideration to creating an iPhone app to log in to Second Life (yeah, yeah, trademark, blah blah). Fortunately there is a lot of information available for the effort, with clone OpenSim being open source, as well as the open source Hippo viewer.

In closing this first post, I want to say a few kind words about our local Meetup group (www.meetup.com). We have a thriving group of iPhone developer’s here in Houston most ably organized by Joao Prado Maia and hosted each month most generously at the offices of Alert Logic, Inc. Unlike far too many Meetup groups, this one actually meets regularly and has a bunch of people in it who really know their iPhone stuff. if you are a struggling iPhone app developer in Houston, come on by ’cause you’ll like it.

I plan on adding regular updates to the blog on Sunday evenings, so see you next week.

There are so many websites dedicated to posting all of the Black Friday ads. Here are a few:

If anyone is looking for an amazing mobile phone on the cheap. Wireless Wave is now selling the Palm Pre for only $49.95. That’s on a 3 year contract, even though it doesn’t say in the ad its on a 3 year contract. Bell is selling the same phone for $99.95. This is a great device with a few design flaws. The keyboard is a little to small, hard to hit the right letter if you have big thumbs. Also, the ridge at the end of the keypad is a little sharp (Palm’s addressed this on the newer phones). Some videos on Youtube show it cutting cheese. It’s a little over the top as I’ve seen the phone and it’s not that bad.

With WiFi, 3.0 Mega Pixel camera and the addition of a great Application store. The Palm’s WebOS is poised to take on any phone. It doesn’t have the 10,000 apps of the iPhone or the 1,000’s of apps and growing of Android. It will most likely have what you need.

This isn’t the newest of phones but I thought I’d better review it since they just slashed the price. Usually a price cut such as this indicates a new phone is coming and sure enough the Palm Pixi is just around the corner. I’ve never been a huge fan of the Palm devices but the new price point makes it much more attractive.

Last time I launched Opera from my desktop was probably around this time last year. It appears that Opera has released a new version. Opera 10. When I first heard of the release I didn’t really expect to see much, I dismissed it foolishly thinking that there would be not much to it other than a few new aesthetics and things like that. During the time of the release I was jam packed with uni work so I really did not get to check it out. So thanks to Stan Schroeder’s post on Mashable I realised I was so .. soooo wrong.

Google Chrome warned me about the Opera installation file being hazardous to my pc when I began downloading the installation file from the Opera website. I decided to ignore that message just this one time and went ahead with the installation.

Launching Opera 10 for the first time, I realised that its much more than it used to be. I remember Opera being a really fast, lightweight browser. But it turns out that Opera 10, whilst still retaining those characteristics, is loaded with loads of new features. Clicky Clicky for the full list of new features.

The new Unite features give you the ability to share your documents, stream music & movies, host websites and chat on your computer straight from the browser. Opera automatically searches for other computers with Opera installed and lets you share these files among them. This is really handy if you want to quickly set up “Homegroup”-like sharing in your network, and yes it works regardless of the OS the computer is running. Unite also lets you dedicate a folder to which other people can upload content to. Of course you have the option to put a password protect the application so that only people you authorize can use this feature.

So far I haven’t had any problems with it. Unlike Chrome, Opera doesn’t seem to slow down my crappy lappy even though i have a gazilion tabs open. Speaking of tabs, hovering over the tab will give you a thumbnail of the tab, much like aero in Windows 7. Also when your copy of Opera is up and running, from the bottom of the toolbar click and drag the tabs toolbar downward from the to see what happens. Thumbs up Opera!

Joe says I don’t respect the time! I want to be indignant about that and tell him to mind his own business but he’s right. And, he says it out of love.

I bought an iPhone a few years ago, not the very first one. I waited a bit, in my defense, and I was already with AT&T so I could rationalize it. I rationalize alot. I love my iPhone but it can be a huge distraction. It can be very useful too, she hastens to add. I use the new recorder feature to capture a fleeting thought, the notepad to write a few ideas here and there, the calendar lets me see the day’s plans.

This week I bought my first ever “app”. I was at iTunes buying the new Rosanne Cash CD when I got distracted by the new apps. I have a few free apps but nothing fancy. I don’t need to budget on my phone or find my way around a city, I don’t need to shop from Target on my phone. I bought a game. Danger, danger! Whirly Words is the game I am about to become addicted to. A game consists of 6 letters and a series of spaces indicating the number of words you can make with those letters. Simple, and worth the $1.99. And, addictive!

The only problem is that the scores don’t have an explanation and they aren’t that intuitive. I don’t understand what they mean so without reference I don’t know how much bragging I’m allowed! I’m a little competitive. I consider myself to be good with words so I want proof of that! This morning, instead of working on a grant, I’ll be searching the web for information on Whirly Words!

Who cares about my iPhone, you ask? Well, according to the news Apple is in the process of breaking its exclusivity contracts across Europe. America will be next and then everyone will own an iPhone. You might find yourself in a similar predicament!

And, yes… I clearly am not respecting the time. Last night when I normally write my posts I was playing Whirly Words. Oh well, tomorrow is another day.

It has been suggested that iPhones could be used to make credit card payments, in a similar way in which they are used to pay for iPhone Apps from Apple’s online store. This potential was demonstrated to me some years ago, when a colleague pointed out the striking similarity of her phone’s SIM card and her credit card chip.

YouGov research carried out on Natwest’s behalf revealed that one in four customers are interested in making money transfers between bank accounts through their phones. However, it is possible that a far larger group of people will possess the relevant technology, and security fears may be alleviated as mobile payments became more common.
