Occasionally, every Mac user (from amateur to power user) has issues either installing stubborn appl

Occasionally, every Mac user (from amateur to power user) has issues either installing stubborn applications or removing them. Fortunately, there are utilities for such instances, which every Mac user should keep handy.

Installation Woes

If you’re new to Macs, or just haven’t really noticed before, Mac OS X uses package files (with a file extension .pkg) for installing some applications. These files are optimized for OS X and are easier to manage than their equivalents in the Windows world (which would be a .exe file and many, many other little files littered around it). Double-clicking one of these packages will usually start the install, however occasionally you might run into one that doesn’t install correctly. Is there a solution? Enter Pacifist.

Pacifist, a $20 shareware application, is basically a power installer. Drop a package file onto Pacifist and you can quickly see the components of that installation, and selectively choose what you wish to install. Instead of reinstalling all OS X, you could quickly just reinstall Safari or Address Book, for instance.

Going a step further, Pacifist can also be used to verify current installations against the original package files, helping you to find specific files that are missing or may have incorrect permissions.

A word of warning, however: As Pacifist is a very powerful application, it can lead to incomplete installations and unexpected application behavior if used incorrectly.

Spring Cleaning

While some enjoy installing every third-party application they can find, others strive for a minimalist Zen quality that involves cutting the clutter by removing any unused ones.

In the Windows world, applications install data everywhere. The same is true for some Mac applications as well (though they tend to be installed in consistent and predictable places). To remove applications completely, I like to use another shareware application called AppZapper.

AppZapper, which retails for $12.95, bills itself as “the uninstaller Apple (s aapl) forgot” and that is a perfect description of what it does. Echoing the simple drag-and-drop nature of OS X, you simply drag an application icon into the AppZapper window. It scours your entire hard drive and finds all associated files (cache files, package receipts, log files, etc.) and in one click, instantly deletes all traces of the application.

Another unique feature of this application is the “genie lamp” icon which will scan your hard drive and show you all of the applications you have installed. At a glance, you can quickly see both what you have and how long it’s been since each application was last used. Cleaning out clutter couldn’t be any simpler!

Again, such a powerful application comes with a word of warning: be careful when deleting applications. But AppZapper does feature a “safety,” which will allow you to protect specific applications (including all system applications), and unlike red shirts in Star Trek, once an application has been zapped, you can still recover it (until you empty your trash).

A Secret Tip That Mama Never Told You

Even after you’ve “deleted” your application and it sits happily in the trash can, sometimes that stubborn can will just not empty itself. You try and you try but constantly get error messages telling you something is still in use. To fix this, make sure that any potentially associated applications are not running when you empty the trash. If the trash still refuses to empty, hold down the option key while clicking empty trash. If, after both of these steps, you still are having no luck, try logging out and logging back in to your user account. If all else fails, a restart should fix the problem.

Think again. Yeah, you did delete the application but, you didn’t delete the cache, support and other files that was related with the application and that leaves you to the very labored work of finding those files and deleting them resulting to wasted time and effort. Don’t worry here’s AppZapper! AppZapper is a Mac application that lets you put the application onto a window and it shows all the related files to the application and send it all to the trash, so you can just empty it and walla! This application really helped my life during the time I was deleting applications that I wasn’t going to use anyway. AppZapper really made my life of uninstalling easier.

This might not be a path-breaking post, but wanted to share how I troubleshooted Firefox not running on my MaC.

Recently, I began to see that my Firefox browser has not been working on my MaC. I removed the application (moving it to trash), reinstalling it etc. But the problem still persisted. As per the MaC, if the application is moved to trash, the same would be completely uninstalled. But, this did not happen. When I downloaded and reinstalled Firefox, the problem persisted and continued.

I used AppZapper and uninstalled Firefox. Then I understood that few of the DLL’s were struck and the whole application was not unistalling completely.

Now I re-installed Firefox and it is working like a zoom…

AppZapper

AppCleaner

AppDelete

AppTrap

I know someone who is getting his first Mac this week, and that got me to thinking about my ten favorite applications:

1. 1Password ($39.95)
If you’re using the same password for multiple websites (especially where your email and financial info is concerned), you’re crazy. 1Password not only makes it easy to keep unique passwords for every website you use, it also has a random password generator that’s very, very good. All you need to do is remember a good, master password. (Mine is more than 20 characters long.) Integrates right in with Safari, Firefox, and other browsers. Amazing.

2. AppZapper ($12.95)
Self-styled as the uninstaller that Apple forgot, AppZapper does a great job of finding all those pesky, little files an application leaves behind when you drag it to the Trash. AppZapper will hunt that all down mercilessly. Save your hard drive space. Live free.

3. ChronoSync ($40.00)
I love Time Machine and use it all the time, but I like having a standard backup of my media files. ChronoSync does an amazing job of looking for changes and keeping a source and a destination in sync, even over the network. (This is how I do it, actually. I keep a media drive attached to my Airport Extreme, and I have ChronoSync operate on a schedule.)

4. GrandPerspective (Free)
Hard drive space is precious. This application will give you a graphical representation of your hard drive, showing you where your largest files live. This is a great way to hunt down what’s taking all that space on your Mac so you can pair it down with a fiery vengeance.

5. HandBrake (Free)
Outstanding DVD ripper (if you want to be able to do this with commercial DVDs, you’ll also need to install the free VLC application as well). As it rips those discs, it transcodes them into whatever video file you need it to be. Better still, steady updates have allowed it to start transcoding video files and not just DVDs, something that’s becoming increasingly important with what’s happened to VisualHub (more on that below).

6. Little Snitch ($29.95)
The Mac firewall will block unsolicited traffic coming in, but doesn’t watch your outgoing traffic at all. This application will show you every little thing that tries to talk to the outside world, giving you the option to either permit it or deny it (temporarily or permanently). Sometimes there are funny little bits of webcode on the Internet that try to escape from your browser to talk to the outside world. I don’t like being spied on, and neither should you. Fight it.

7. SuperCal ($19)
If photography is important to you, then you’ll want to keep your monitor properly calibrated. Short of buying a legitimate recalibration tool (for hideous amounts of money), you can eyeball it with this application. All monitors looks calibration over time, so be thou aware.

8. TrueCrypt (Free)
More on the security front, this application will let you create uber-encrypted images that no one will ever crack, provided you use a strong password to seal them. Better still, you can get crazy fancy and create whole partitions that are encrypted and are further invisible to the OS. In fact, they’ll look like random noise on the hard drive, actually providing you with some plausible deniability. Do it. You can pretend you’re a spy.

9. The Unarchiver (Free)
Mac OS X does a pretty good job decompressing archived files (like ZIP), but there are other ones it can’t do. This application gives you the support for just about every major compression tool out there, but be aware that it chokes on password-protected RAR files. (In those cases, I use MacPAR deLuxe, another free application, which specializes in reassembling and decompressing RAR files.)

10. VisualHub (Discontinued)
“What! He put up an application I can’t even buy anymore! The nerve!” Well, you can still find it, but the important thing is that there’s a good chance that this will eventually develop into something open source. And hopefully it does, since it’s one of the best video transcoders out there.

Honorable mention: Pixelmator – I sincerely think this application will one day replace Photoshop for me, but it only does about 85% of what I need it to do for my photography work, so I have to wait just a bit longer. (Version 1.4, which is imminent, sounds very promising.) Either way, it’s a beautiful, incredibly fast application built on Core Image (an OS X technology), and it makes Photoshop look like a giant pig. Plus, the price absolutely crushes the competition at $59.

Super honorable mention: ClickToFlash may be the greatest Safari plugin ever conceived. Make it so that Flash elements on a webpage can’t run without your authorization. See my earlier post on the matter.

Today is “How-To” Friday (still keeping myself on schedule after four days)! I know I just posted about computer stuff yesterday but I don’t know how to do much else and I already posted a songwriting tutorial on Wednesday. This tutorial was inspired by a program that destroyed my Mac a couple days ago.

If you’re like me then every so often you feel like you want to start fresh. After owning my iMac G5 for 4 years I felt like I wanted to start over but not have to buy a new computer. Well, a little program called Monolingual helped me do that in an unexpected way. Monolingual erases language and CPU architecture support that you don’t want from all the programs on your system which can save you several gigabytes worth of memory. But if you aren’t careful you can end up with a computer full of programs that no longer work. This happened to me and in the process of restoring my computer to glory I discovered how to get a fresh start without the hassle of starting from scratch.

Over time your Mac will probably gather files and folders that become useless and just take up space. OS X isn’t nearly as bad as Windows in this department and usually your system doesn’t suffer too badly but if you have an older Mac then you might notice a subtle sluggishness of your system.

This is because the Mac’s uninstall procedure (while so much better than Windows’) isn’t as clean as you may think. On Windows every program plants part of itself in as many different folders as it can (or at least it seems that way) and when you uninstall a program there are a lot of files left behind. The Mac isn’t too bad with this but it does do it. You think that all you have to do is drag your app to the trash can and its gone. Wrong. While Mac apps don’t put pieces of themselves in a thousand different folders like Will Smith in “Seven Pounds” giving away organs to a bunch of different people (oops, did I spoil the ending? and was that a lame methaphor?) they do add files to a few key directories. Usually in the Application Support folder and and the Preferences folder. If you look in your Library folder you might see folders having to do with apps you deleted long ago. Your System/Library folder will have some too.

There is also the matter of system preferences. You may have used a program like Onyx or Spring Cleaning or Secrets to play around with system settings you normally don’t get to unlock. You might now regret your decision to do this because you can’t figure out how to change them back.

And finally, your computer might just be running slower than usual. Well, I think you’ve had enough of my technical explanations and now you just want to get to it. Here we go…

What you need…

You need to get an uninstaller program. The one I like most is called AppZapper. It isn’t free but its cheap and it works great. If you want to go the free route there’s AppCleaner (which is my recommendation for a free app), AppTrap, and AppDelete.

The serial numbers to all your installed programs if any (if you don’t have some or all of them don’t worry, just read on)

DVDs or CDs to burn or an external HD or some sort of large capacity or many large capacity USB drives

A copy of your current version of OS X (don’t worry if you upgraded from 10.5.1 to 10.5.6, this doesn’t matter in the end) If you didn’t buy the OS separately then a copy of your operating system came with your computer. Find the discs that came with your Mac, thats what your OS is stored on.

At this point I recommend making a list of all the programs in your Applications folder in case you lose that folder in the process (which is most likely NOT going to happen) and so that you can follow the rest of these steps

You will want a program that frees up hard drive space. I highly recommend Xslimmer for the job. Monolingual is a free alternative but you can end up doing more damage than good if you don’t know exactly how the program does what it does.

The Process…

Do you have the best programs for the job?

Look over your list of applications. Do they truly work for you or are you just used to them? Go over the list and Google some alternatives for those applications. You may find a lightweight program like Rapidweaver that suits you better than Dreamweaver. Or you may be very attached to your programs and you don’t want to try anything new. That’s fine. Once you’ve acquired your replacement programs either leave them on the disc they came or you downloaded them, back up the installers to disc and in a folder on your desktop or wherever named “To Install”. Leave them alone for now. Do not install them.

2. Backup, Archive, Whatever you want to call it

If you follow the instructions in this tutorial you won’t need a backup but mileage always varies and there is going to be a small (miniscule, really) number of people who will track me down and kill me because something went awry. If you’re going to backup your files (which is always recommended no matter what you do) include all your music, photos, iPhoto libraries, documents… you know what you want to keep.

3. Uninstall The Space Wasters

Using a program like AppZapper go ahead and uninstall all the programs that you don’t want anymore. Think very hard about what you want and don’t want. Do you really use some of those programs? If not then get rid of them. You should also get rid of programs that you downloaded replacements for in step 1.

4. Re-Install OS X

Insert the Leopard disc (or whatever disc you have, I only know how this works out for Leopard for sure but it can’t be much different for 10.3 through 10.5). When the window opens click the OS X icon to install the OS.

Your computer will restart and you will see the installer. Its pretty straightforward from there. Once you get to the point where you pick which hard drive to install it on you may think you have a problem. The installer won’t let you install the OS because even though you have the same version you added updates through software update and your system is technically newer than the OS you are trying to install. Click on options and then select “Archive and Install”. This will save your preferences and everything within your home folder in a directory called “Previous Systems”. OS X will automatically transfer 90% of what’s in your current Home folder and use it in the new system. When the installer is finished you will log in and see your desktop and everything else just the way you left it. It seems as though nothing happened but it has. Look through the Previous Systems folder located on Macinstosh HD just below the regular System folder. Make sure there isn’t anything you may need from there. Open any apps you believe may have been affected by the reinstall and make sure they work. They most likely will. If after you check things out and the water is fine delete the Previous Systems folder. This is going to free up a lot of hard drive space.

5. Install Your New Apps

Remember that folder you made with all those new apps in them? Open up your To Install folder and install your new toys. Go ahead and open everything up and play with your preferences. Get them just right.

6. Update

Now your Mac should be cleaner, lighter and faster on its feet. But some things like iTunes may not work. This is because you need to update all the default programs installed by Apple. Before going on go to Software Update from the Apple Menu. Once updates are installed and you restart your computer check for updates again. Keep on checking for updates and restarting until Software Update says that your system is up to date. It should take no more than 2 or 3 checks before your system is up to date.

7. Put Your Hard Drive on a Diet

If you got Xslimmer then you have made a great choice. If you got Monolingual I suggest you be careful.

For Xslimmer:
- Use the Genie to find all the programs that can be slimmed down. I suggest you don’t change the protections for protected programs. Once the program has scanned your drive open up the preferences for it and make sure that the backup option is selected. Then choose a folder to store your program backups in. Press the Slim button and watch Xslimmer backup then cut out all unnecessary files from your system. You will most likely save a number of gigabytes on your drive. When it finishes make sure all the programs it worked on still launch. If everything is fine then you can delete everything in the backup folder you selected.

For Monolingual:
- Be warned: If you use this program improperly you can end up having to reinstall OS X all over again.
- You will need to back up every last program on your hard drive manually if you choose to do a backup. Follow the directions and make sure to set the program so that it keeps the languages you want to use. I advise against playing with the Architecture tab. If you do it anyway then whatever happens is on you. But if something does happen remember I warned you. Monolingual deletes one thing at a time. So it will delete the language support first, then you have to go to the next pane and choose your settings and it will delete whatever is next. Architecture files don’t hog much space at all. But if you’re desperate then go ahead.

There you go. Your system should have some more pep now.

In keeping with the spirit of the previous post, I’m adding the 10 apps and utilities that I’ve installed on the new MacBook Pro. These aren’t full commercial packages, but in looking for apps to replace the PC apps of the past, they are what I needed at the time.

Firefox – Goes without saying, it is the single most popular browser out there. The changeover to the Mac is made easier when the software is a direct replacement. Others may be faster, or your preference, but Firefox gives me what I need, and most importantly, what I’m used to.

Thunderbird – Looking for a mail app to replace Outlook is a tough one. I have tried Entourage, and found that it isn’t quite what I was looking for. Thunderbird is nice, and seems to be fairly flexible. There are also a great number of plug ins available.

Cyber Duck – An easy to use, simple ftp client

App Zapper – Makes uninstalling applications simple

Super Duper – A full system backup / Imaging package. No replacement for Time Machine, but allows you to create a full system backup for restoring if need be.

Stuffit expander – Necessary for handling .sit files.

Dock Spaces – I use lots of apps, and love having them availabe in the dock. This app allows me to set up several docks, and cycle through them as needed.

Taco Edit – HTML text editor. Helpful for the times that Textedit ust isn’t enough.

4. Parallels Desktop for Mac $79.99

Alternativas: iTunes Alarm, iTaf

10. Paragon NTFS for Mac OS X $39.95

Most of the time, you can simply drag the App to the trash. That’s it. The secret is the app you just trashed is not one file but actually a special kind of folder[1] with a collection of files inside. This collection of files make up an application.

Almost all apps keep track of your preferences settings in a .plist file. The .plist file is tiny in size (usually less than 4KB). If you want to reclaim every single bit of disc space, you can either go to ~/Library/Preferences to look for and delete it, or use AppZapper, AppDelete, CleanApp etc to automate the process. Most of the time we leave the .plist alone.

If an app comes with an Uninstaller, use it! An Uninstaller usually accompanies complex apps such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite that spew support files, additional fonts, add-ons, custom extensions etc all over your harddisk.

So as you can see, uninstalling OS X’s apps is as simple as installing them! Yep, there’s no Registery nor DLL to get mad about.

[1] You can peek inside the special folder by right-clicking the app and select “Show Package Contents” from the pop-up menu.

Drag an app into your applications folder, and it’s installed. You’d think it would be that easy to delete an app — just a matter of dragging it to the trash. But it’s not. Applications install preferences, caches, and other support files throughout your computer that take up space and generate clutter. Deleting these by hand every time you delete an app is a pain.

Introducing AppZapper.

AppZapper is for people who want to confidently try new apps while knowing they can uninstall them easily. Drag one or more unwanted apps onto AppZapper and watch as it finds all the extra files and lets you delete them with a single click. A slick safety system remembers which apps you want to keep safe, and the log tracks all the files you’ve zapped. In one Zap you’ll understand it. In two you’ll fall in love. Within the five free Zaps, you’ll know you need to add AppZapper to your arsenal. Go ahead — try five free zaps and see AppZapper, the Mac uninstaller for the rest of us, in action.

What’s New In Version 1.8.0?

If you are new to Macintosh, you may wonder how to delete programs from your computer. Deleting programs in Windows XP required you to go to the Control Panel. Then you found your application and deleted it. Pretty simple once you got the hang of it. Some users made the mistake of throwing the application into the Recycle Bin. They then discovered that this was a bad move. In some cases, remnants of the program would remain and in other cases XP started to act up. Windows programs often copy important files to several different parts of the operating system. If you just delete the program folder, there could be many files and settings that are left behind. OSX does not work this way. When you install a program, most of the time, you just drag it to the Applications folder. To delete a file, you can grab that same icon and drag it to the trash to remove it from your system. You can do this, but there will be files left behind. These files will not harm the function of your computer, but they will add up over time. There are applications available that will give you a clean sweep. I have been using AppZapper since the beginning. Using AppZapper is very simple. You grab that icon and drag it to the AppZapper window. You will then see all of the application files. When you click on Zap! all of the program will be sent to the trash can. AppZapper is not free. For $12.95, I think it is a good investment. There is a FREE program available that works in much the same way as AppZapper.
AppDelete is a free alternative. AppDelete is started by dropping an application onto the AppDelete icon. You can drop either the application or the folder that the application is in onto the icon. Once you do this you will get a confirmation window displaying the name of the application you dropped.
