Los Angeles, CA April 19, 2004 — When Los Angeles-based pianist and composer Mike Garson sits down at a keyboard, the result is usually a passionate musical performance. However, while touring with the Smashing Pumpkins in late 2000, Garson discovered another creative outlet: the computer keyboard. Using various programs on his MAC laptop, Garson has been designing imaginative imagery for nearly four years. On April 12, 2004, while Garson was in Portland, Oregon with David Bowie’s “A Reality Tour,” the Brian Marki Fine Art Gallery hosted a premiere reception of his avant-garde artwork.

โ€œIf I am truly passionate about what, broadway tickets
, I do, that feeling can inspire people who receive my art,โ€ Garson believes. โ€œAs a musician I’m not concerned with whether I play jazz, rock,, broadway tickets
, classical, or pop so long as it’s creative. Likewise, my visual art acts as a complementary conduit for my creativity.โ€

Titled โ€œFrom Pianos to Pixels: The Improvisational Art of Mike Garson,โ€ the event showcased Garson’s improvisational musical ability and engaging visual artistry โ€” challenging him to compose music for pieces of art chosen by the audience. Individuals who purchased pieces, broadway tickets
, at the reception โ€” or at any time during their display through the end of April โ€” will receive a collector’s, broadway tickets
, edition CD of the one-of-a-kind performance.

โ€œI am thrilled to be able to present Mike’s work to the world, broadway tickets
, for the first time,โ€ explains gallery owner Brian Marki. โ€œI have always been in love with his music, and his art seems to be his music in a new dimension.โ€

Garson’s artwork was well received by the Portland community. According, broadway tickets
, to John Foyston of The Oregonian, โ€œIf Mike Garson is not a renaissance man, he’ll do until one comes along, because this longtime keyboardist with David Bowie’s band is also an accomplished visual artist in his own right. The images range from Kandinsky-esque splashes of color to what look like tweaked photomicrographs of crystals. They’re all fascinating pieces and suggest that Garson has at least a second career ahead of him.โ€

Although new to visual composition, Garson has a long history in the arts. He began touring with David Bowie in 1972, and, broadway tickets
, has worked with many of music’s great legends, including Nine Inch Nails, Stan Getz, Freddie Hubbard,, broadway tickets
, Stanley Clarke and Mel Torme. He has composed music for several movies, such as MGM’s โ€œStigmataโ€ for which he co-composed the score with Billy Corgan.

In March, Garson released a solo album, โ€œHomage to My Heroes,โ€ featuring 16 contemporary classical, broadway tickets
, compositions recorded in real-time on a Yamaha Disklavier piano โ€” no sheet music was written! The CD is available for online purchase at www.cdbaby.com/mikegarson. Further fusing his two chosen media of creative expression, Garson’s artwork was used, broadway, broadway tickets
, tickets
, for the album’s cover.

John Kazanjian, principal of โ€œThe World’s Finest Resortsโ€ โ€” a private members club offering accommodation and travel benefits in the world’s, broadway tickets
, most luxurious resorts โ€” and Jack Schell, a composer and audio engineer, purchased two of Garson’s pieces: โ€œTransition,โ€ a stylized photograph of a recent recording session, and โ€œDistorted Beliefs,โ€ the anchor image for the show featuring a skewed Star of David against an intricate orange pattern.

Created while Garson was performing in Berlin, Germany, the piece presents conflicting images of a fractured faith against a hopeful background of possibility. Kazanjian and Schell were immediately taken by the impact of the image, and were further convinced of its importance after Garson performed โ€œHatikvah Variations,โ€ an emotional arrangement of Israel’s national anthem. The, broadway tickets
, piece is especially relevant as the tragic, broadway tickets
, events of the Holocaust are globally remembered through the month of April.

โ€œWe had seen it in a preview and it was very dramatic,โ€ Kazanjian explains. โ€œWhen Mike told the story behind the piece and then played, broadway tickets
, the national anthem of Israel, we realized it was so strong that it should be in a Holocaust museum. Until that can happen, we decided to be the custodians of the piece.โ€

Showing their support for Garson were members of the Bowie band: Sterling Campbell (drums), Gail Ann Dorsey (bass/vocals), Gerry Leonard (band leader/guitar), Earl Slick (guitar) and Catherine โ€œCatโ€ Russell (keyboards/vocals). Also in attendance from the Bowie tour was Nick Belshaw (road manager), Teddy Antonlin (make-up and hair) and, representing Clear Channel Entertainment, Cynthia Oknanian (tour director’s assistant).

Adding additional appeal to the evening were Courtney Taylor-Taylor, Pete Loew, Brent DeBoer and Zia McCabe of Portland’s, broadway tickets
, own โ€œThe Dandy Warholsโ€ who performed later that evening with Garson and his bandmates during an impromptu jam session at the band’s eclectic studio, broadway tickets
, .

The following evening, Garson rejoined his colleagues at Portland’s Rose Garden for the 76th concert of David Bowie’s worldwide โ€œA Reality Tour.โ€ The 28-song set-list included classic hits such as โ€œRebel, Rebelโ€ plus new favorites โ€” and featured Garson in a dramatic solo during โ€œAshes to Ashes.โ€ The tour continues throughout North America, ending in July after performances at several European music festivals. Visit www.davidbowie.com/reality for additional information about the tour and to purchase tickets for shows in your area.

A Los Angeles resident, Garson returns to Southern California with the Bowie tour for a very busy week. An April 19 show at the Santa Barbara County Bowl kicks off the series of events, followed by a taping of the Ellen De Generes Show on April 20, an appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay, broadway tickets
, Leno April 21, a sold-out April 22 performance at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles, and a show on April 23 at the Anaheim Pond in Anaheim.

Los Angeles radio fans are also in for a special treat! Beginning at 11 p.m. on Tuesday, April 20 and continuing into the early morning hours of April 21, Garson will appear back-to-back on the โ€œAsk Mr. KABC Showโ€ and, broadway tickets
, โ€œRed Eye Radioโ€ hosted, broadway tickets
, by Doug McIntyre on Talk Radio 790-AM KABC. Details about this special appearance โ€” as well as a link to a Web stream of the live broadcast โ€” can be found at www.kabc.com.

Garson’s, broadway tickets
, artwork will remain on display – and available for purchase – through the end of April. Brian Marki Fine Art is located at 2236 NE Broadway in the Historic Irvington District in Portland. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For additional information about the gallery, visit www.brianmarki.com or call 503-249-5659.

Today is Monday, April 20, the 110th day of 2009. There are 255 days left in the year.

Today’s Highlight in History:

Ten years ago, on April 20, 1999, the Columbine High School massacre took place in Colorado as two students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, shot and killed 12 classmates and one teacher before taking their own lives.

On this date:

In 1812, the fourth vice president of the United States, George Clinton, died in Washington at age 72, becoming the first vice president to die while in office.

In 1836, Congress voted to establish the Wisconsin Territory.

In 1889, Adolf Hitler was born in Braunau am Inn, Austria.

In 1945, during World War II, allied forces took control of the German cities of Nuremberg and Stuttgart.

In 1949, scientists at the Mayo Clinic announced they’d succeeded in synthesizing a hormone found to be useful in treating rheumatoid arthritis; the substance was named “cortisone.”

In 1968, Pierre Elliott Trudeau was sworn in as prime minister of Canada.

In 1971, the U.S. Supreme Court, in Swann v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education, unanimously upheld the use of busing to achieve racial desegregation in schools.

In 1972, the manned lunar module from Apollo 16 landed on the moon.

In 1978, a Korean Air Lines Boeing 707 crash-landed in northwestern Russia after being fired on by a Soviet interceptor after entering Soviet airspace. Two passengers were killed.

In 1988, gunmen who’d hijacked a Kuwait Airways jumbo jet were allowed safe passage out of Algeria under an agreement that freed the remaining 31 hostages and ended a 15-day siege in which two passengers were slain.

Five years ago: A tornado tore through north-central Illinois, killing eight people. A judge ordered Multnomah County, Ore., to stop issuing gay marriage licenses — but also ordered the state to recognize the 3,000 licenses already granted in the county.

One year ago: Before a full house at Yankee Stadium, Pope Benedict XVI celebrated his final Mass in the United States, blessing his enormous U.S. flock and telling Americans to use their freedoms wisely. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice mocked anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr as a coward during a visit to Iraq. Danica Patrick became the first female winner in IndyCar history, capturing the Indy Japan 300 in her 50th career start.

Today’s Birthdays: Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens is 89. Actor Leslie Phillips is 85. Actor George Takei is 72. Singer Johnny Tillotson is 70. Actor Ryan O’Neal is 68.
Thought for Today: “If anyone tells you something strange about the world, something you had never heard before, do not laugh but listen attentively; make him repeat it, make him explain it; no doubt there is something there worth taking hold of.” — Georges Duhamel, French author (1884-1966).

So last week was chock full of goodness … but alas, life isn’t conducive to blogging right now. Didn’t get a chance to blog a recap of the week but you can’t spell blog without the letter b and that letter is a halfway-homonym to Bea … Bea Arthur. Long story short, I had to post a blog for Bea.

Brief makeup for lost time:

I didn’t post on April 20 so …

Belated Happy Birthday to the freshest: Edie Sedgwick

… who shares quite a bit with the recreation celebrated on the same day, but not much more than a birthday — and an undeniable charisma — with the extremist mind behind Mein Kampf

Belated welcome to the Taurean time of year, and those whose birthdays fall within that most brilliant season — we’re kind of a big deal.

Belated “Two thumbs fresh” kudos to Lily Allen for a brilliant show at Roseland …

though it’s apparent she doesn’t need my validation

It’s amazing what two years and tenacity will do to your fanbase: from Webster Hall and highschool kids, to Roseland and high profile industry people (oddly enough making up for the bulk of non-dancing attendees who congregated around my nook); Even more amazing is what two weeks and a Twitter will do to your fan club — of haters …

Keep in mind … that was just last Monday — and not even the half of it. Moving on though, I didn’t post on Spring coming to DC; or my having to drop her off at National because Summer decided to catch an early flight in — six to eight weeks early. Again though, I doubt anyone in DC — or on the Eastern Seaboard — needed the heads up about the heat, at least not these kids …

I don’t know if the little girl’s chagrin is over the sun or swine flu — but either way she is feeling the struggle of life.

That said, I didn’t post on the litany of massive events this past week … but I had to post on Bea. We lost a great one …

So yesterday I went down to the Vancouver seed bank for their 420 after party. I got there a bit ear

So yesterday I went down to the Vancouver seed bank for their 420 after party. I got there a bit early, despite the fact that I took the wrong bus and had to kick rocks a few blocks to get there. The dispensary wasn’t opening till 1:30 because of some traffic issues or something like that so I hung out with some guys in front and waited it out. I met a cat named leigh who told me about the current state of the music industry and the direction in which he thinks it should head. This older gentleman was spitting some solid advice and just before he left he told me to check out his blog, Advice for Young People at blogspot which I have been sadly unable to locate, I could really use some advice. Kiweed popped his head out the window and said whats up for a minute before heading back in to the lounge. When the dispensary opened at 1 I stopped in and picked up a couple grammes of their newest shipment, Kootney Hash Plant. This was some of the tastiest weed I have had in a long long time. Bright green in colour, dense nugs with and a smooth fruity taste. the buds themselves were some of the nicest little trees I have ever seen at the dispensary. Its now a toss up between the purple kush, one batch of lemon hash plant they had, and the new Kootney hash plant.

When I finally headed in to the lounge DJ Kiweed was spinning in the the kitchen window and by far this could have been the most diverse session I have ever had. My first couple jays I shared with two older gents and the guy who built the pond in the seed bank garden, one guy that left shortly after for a quest to find the cannery restaurant along the water in east van. Before he left though we shared some interesting conversation about technology which led to self learning robots and what can be considered sentience. Interesting and intelligent conversation come few and far between. one of the girls was walking around giving out complimentary hash tokes from all the kief they collected on 420 which IMO is pretty special on its own. When the first guy left we adopted a few new comers to our cipher. Two younger people, one interested in the movie business and another who I assume just likes smoking weed. I am currently studying entertainment business so I gave the girl all the advice I had before going on to talk to another guy about hemp oils and the possible medical benefits such as its application in the fight against cancer. Later a few people came in who could have easily been good friends of my parents. They bummed a paper off me and proceeded to try and roll a jay. I found this hilarious and yet so cool.

At the 20 of every hour there was a door prize raffle for a gramme of cannabis, around 3:20 I won a gramme of cherry that I twisted up and shared with the current cipher that had greatly grown in size by this time. Much to my surprise the Tallbrothers showed up and did a live show which was amazing and got the whole crowd jiving. The Tallbrothers are a reeferjazz band who’s not so subtle message of “Jive up” can be heard here on their myspace. They started off their set with jive up, went on to sing about their favourite kind of rolling papers “Club Papers”. Later in the set they played the famous theme of Marc Emery “Prince of Pot” that was featured in his documentary on CBC that you can check out online or purchase from the Cannabis Culture website.

The band took a short break for the bong hitting contest which in retrospect I should have joined in on, maybe next time. For a $5 entry fee the contestants each had to burn a full gramme out of a large gear bong with an ash catcher and double bubbler on the stem. all of the contestants got water after their rip and a free cookie. The winner won an eighth of some 007 who happened to be, with no surprise the older gentleman with the long grey beard. He had a beard, he had to be good.

Right after the contest they had the big draw at 6:20 for the big prizes of an ounce, a half, a quarter, and an eighth. I won nothing but then again I only bought 3 tickets. Next time, now that I’m aware of how it works, I’ll be dropping a 20 or two on an arms length of tickets in hopes of winning that ounce. $40 for a good chance to win an ounce or a half or even a quarter is pretty good. So right around this time just before the big raffle the place flooded with people, a few of which looked like small time dealers who hung out in the back with a bunch of tickets in hopes of winning a new shipment. I saw one girl who in some of the worst most obvious dealing I have ever seen took out a large ziplock packed with filled dime bags. Can anyone say “Intent to Distribute”? Oh well… She’ll learn when a cop searches that bag.

My favourite part of the whole event was the house. The house can only be described as what I imagine an old booze running stash house might have looked like. There were people everywhere. The big boss guys from the cannabis culture HQ, including Dana Larsen, Jacob Hunter and Michelle Rainey were all hanging out on the uppermost balcony of this ancient structure. Everyone was “jiving up” all day, I adopted a bong for the day and burned off more than a few jays that seemed to come from every direction. The House upstairs of the Seed bank had an internet room with two computers and wireless internet. There is a chill room with an N64 and a second room with full black lights and a projection tv for all kinds of trippy visuals. The DJs were set up in the kitchen and the barbecues were set up out on the balcony and working hard to feed all the munching patrons of the afternoon. When I had had a few bottles of water I headed down to search for the washroom and was directed to the moon door. This was the smallest, albeit rather cool, washroom I have ever been inside. I couldn’t stand up straight and It was quite the effort to pee in the tiny toilette, but I managed. The Walls were plastered with newspaper clippings of everything from Peter Tosh calling for legalization to the Vancouver 3’s exploits against the US.

At the end of the party, after the final raffle i was chilling out with a hamburger when an extremely large man flipped out beside me and started claiming that his clan of vampires was the best, something about facebook, his battle cry and I dunno what else but I took that as my cue to leave. So a picked up my salad and headed for the bus.

I stopped by the grocery store on the way home and picked up some oreos, ginger-ale and taco seasoning which later turned out to be fajita seasoning. I didn’t really realize how stonery this was until the chick working the check-out took one look at my choices, glances at my eyes and burst in to laughter. Oh well, no shame in my game.

Definitely an interesting day, check out some of the pictures.

Ten years ago yesterday, April 20, 1999, a terrible tragedy took place at Columbine High School in C

Ten years ago yesterday, April 20, 1999, a terrible tragedy took place at Columbine High School in Colorado. Two students, Eric Harris & Dylan Klebold, went on a shooting spree in their high school killing 12 students, a teacher, and eventually themselves. Although this took place on the other side of the country, it couldn’t have been more real for me.

I was a junior in high school at the time, and I still remember arriving home from school that afternoon to hear of this great tragedy. As I watched it unfold, I was amazed that this was happening in an American school. This wasn’t the first, or last school shooting, but it just seemed so malicious and hateful. I thought, ‘How could teenagers have so much rage and hatred inside of them?’ This one tragedy played a huge role in my life. I remember the fear that many of us felt that week in school. The anxiousness of what could be around the next corner. This event was formational in my life and it greatly impacted my future involvement in high school Bible Clubs both as a student and later a youth pastor. As a teenager and young adult, it was a reminder that life is short, we need to live it to the full!

Ten years later, the world has continued to change. We are now living in a post-911 world. One of suspicion, uncertainty and violence. We don’t know what terror lies around the next turn. In the midst of all of this, I know I can have the same peace I had 10 years ago sitting in class. Regardless of what’s down the hall or down the street, I know that my God is on the throne. I can experience the peace that passes all understanding, not because of my power, ability, 0r insight, but because I serve a God who is greater and in the end has already conquered sin, death and the grave! Regardless of what terror or uncertainty you are facing today, remember God will see you through.

As a tribute to the shooting 10 short years ago, here’s a short video I found. It really takes you back!

I don’t have much to say about gun control or bullying or most of the obvious talking points o

I don’t have much to say about gun control or bullying or most of the obvious talking points on the Columbine anniversary. I do have something to say about zero tolerance. But mostly I’m offering my personal reflections. I also clicked around the anniversary coverage from the Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News so I’d have something to link to.

Some folks call April 20 an “unofficial day of celebration.” Others call it Hitler’s birthday [link not provided]. I commemorate it in my own low-key way. Today I wore the closest I could come to all black, with a tie in silver and blue, the Columbine High School colors. I like to pay tribute without anyone noticing that I’m paying tribute: no ribbons, no armbands, no candlelight vigils. I’d rather avoid the obvious questions: Are you from Denver? Did you know anyone from Columbine? No and no. Well then, what are you doing? Were you personally affected by Columbine in any way? Can’t I say yes to that one?

It was, up to then, the worst news event that had happened in my lifetime. It seemed specifically laboratory-designed to upset me. It was going to make life much worse for moody loners — that was immediately obvious. I really thought it was going to ruin childhood for the next generation. Of all random things, the disaster was even named after my favorite flower.

It happened on a Tuesday morning. I was having a busy day at work and was only vaguely aware of the headlines on the computer. Starting the next morning, though, I was glued to the radio. I have vivid memories from four separate occasions that week of listening to Columbine coverage. The last was on Saturday morning, leaving the Waffle House on Baseline Road for a drive to Tucson. NPR was playing 911 tapes from the scene, and the announcer warned in advance that “sensitive listeners” may want to turn the channel. I said, “That’s me,” turned off the radio, and didn’t listen to news again for a month.

During that spring, NPR had been overplaying their war coverage from Kosovo. I’d been satirizing this by recording a new answering-machine message every morning: a 30-second daily news brief from “KOSV Radio, all Kosovo, all the time.” I mean, didn’t they have some other story they could cover? I learned then to be careful what you wish for.

On a happier note, I met my future wife the following weekend. By then I had replaced “all Kosovo, all the time” with a dour announcement that “all comedy has been suspended.” When she started calling me, she was rather concerned about what she was getting into. Also, a few days later, one of our first dates was to watch a hockey playoff game at a sports bar. After ten years, she can accuse me of a lot of things, but not false advertising.

Meanwhile, the mythology had spread and the zero tolerance policies had begun. If you thought American liberty took a body blow on 9/11 (an even worse Tuesday morning news event), don’t forget how we were softened up by Columbine. The only good news is that schools can’t afford to maintain a police state indefinitely. People with more sense than school administrators — okay, that doesn’t narrow it down; how about professional psychology researchers? — say zero tolerance doesn’t work anyway.

Shooting up a high school — what an obvious, inevitable thing to do. Somehow I’d avoided doing it myself; somehow a million kids before and since have avoided doing it. The question never was why it happened. The question always was why it hasn’t happened more often. One answer, apparently, is that the killer who hatched the plot wasn’t mad at the jocks for picking on him, as contemporary reports had it; he was just “a psychopath likely to commit a heinous crime whatever the venue.”

But overall I think we’re mostly trusting to luck that it won’t happen again. And in a free country, we have no choice.

Have been fulfilled 10 years of the Columbine slaughter, the time has passed, and how many questions have remained unanswered, for family, friends, inner circle and the whole world in general.

We could have prevented what happened? The parents of those kids who committed the massacre did not realize that their children were not in their right mind? The possession of a weapon will be the culprit?

There is someone responsible for all this in addition to Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, who were the ones who killed their comrades, when the April 20, 1999, came armed with two guns (one cut), a Hi-Point 995 carbine semi-automatic 9 mm, a Tech 9 semiautomatic pistol caliber 9 mm, several explosive devices and a homemade bomb consisting of a propane tank, 9 kilograms, school attended, the Columbine High School in Jefferson County in Colorado.

When they entered and shot everyone in the cafeteria and library, killing 13 people (12 students and one teacher) and wounding 24 people before committing suicide.

With flags at half-up marks the tenth anniversary of the Columbine tragedy, 13 bells in remembrance of those killed were ringing at the Congress state, whose names were read by a circle of volunteers.

The director of the institution, Frank DeAngelis, who promised to remain in office until all preschool students who were on the attack they graduate, was among those attending the ceremony Monday.

Tom Mauser, who lost her son Daniel for 15 years in the shooting, he addressed the audience to tell the “pain and trauma” still feel that all those directly affected by the tragedy.

“While remember this day, not dwell on the pain and trauma. But do not ignore the fact that it happened there and the pain and the trauma is still there for some people,” said the father in the act of Littleton.

Have passed and the pain remains intact for many, the memory is indelible, has left standing in those who suffered a loss that day, the wounded and those who belong to that community.

Similar developments have again occur in United States and other countries, one wonders by when and what can be done to prevent such acts and whether there is any way to prevent them.

A remaind for all who died that day, a candle lit in his memory, a reminder not to forget, and not repeat the same story.

every so often, the calendar throws you a freebie. look alike day is one of those days. all you have to do is wear something you know someone else owns. we went with black shirts and jeans.

it’s fitting that this holiday would come on a day like today. yes, we know. it’s 4.20. so thank you, calendar, for giving us a day so easy even a stoner could celebrate.

we’ve suddenly become overcome with the munchies. thank god we have some of those cheeseballs left.

totes! what?

I cannot believe it. It was 10 years ago on this very day. Columbine High School was shot up by Eric

I cannot believe it. It was 10 years ago on this very day. Columbine High School was shot up by Eric Harris an Dylan Klebold. It resulted in 13 deaths. I was in high school when this horrible bloodbath happened. It sure felt like yesterday. God, time flies fast. Where were you when Columbine unfolded in 1999?

I thought to myself that the Columbine massacre was in retaliation against the trial of Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols for their involvement in the Oklahoma City Bombing and the Branch Davidian Fire, which happened two years before the bombing. Both are related because the Oklahoma City Bombing happened in retaliation against Waco. Also, Harris and Klebold planned the attack on the day of the Branch Davidian Fire and Oklahoma City Bombing. Had the bombs went off in the school on April 19th or April 20th, people would probably assume it would be somehow related to the Branch Davidian Fire and Oklahoma City Bombing. The Columbine Massacre was suppose to be a bombing that would of claimed hundreds of lives and it would of been viewed differently. Also, Ted Kaczynski, was caught as the Unabomber and ended up in prison. Ramzi Yousef and Sheikh Omar Abdul were sentenced to life in prison around the time McVeigh, Nichols, and Kaczynski were convicted and sentenced for their terroristic deeds. Yousef and Omar bombed the World Trade Center in 1993 in attempts of destroying it, but they failed. Sadly, the World Trade Center would be destroyed in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack after two airplanes attacked the towers. All of them were sent off to ADX Florence Supermax Prison for life, about an hour from Columbine High School.

That could really have pissed off Harris and Klebold and somehow they could relate to them. In many ways, Harris and Klebold lived a life similar to a terrorist and died like one. Harris and Klebold said in their diary that it was a copycat of the Oklahoma City Bombing, in which there is a copycat effect. It could be simple as a copycat effect or something worse which would be retaliation towards the federal government, which was the reason the 1995 bombing happened.
