Ah, come hanno ragione gli inglesi… Loro dall’altro del loro aplomb sanno che se una donna si incacchia lo fa per davvero. Già perché chi la conosce la evita l’ira funesta di certe donne, quella decantata per intenderci il caro buon vecchio Omero. Quella stessa ira delle tre protagoniste del capolavoro di Russ Meyer, la stessa che spingeva la cara buon vecchia Kelis a cantare frasi come “I hate you soo much right now, I haaate” o tutte le nefandezze che faceva Lily Allen al suo ex in Smile. Lo stesso stato d’animo che dà il titolo parafrasato del post: “L’inferno non ha mai conosciuto una furia paragonabile a quella di una donna disprezzata”. E visto che la causa del mal è stata proprio un cittadino (controvoglia) di sua maestà eccomi costretta a ripiegare sulle parole di William Congreve, che poi perché dannarsi l’anima per un uomo che copre le sue pudenze con un gonnellino…

So I finally got around to watching The Godfather earlier in the week. Heavens to Mergatroyd. That is a mighty long film. It was okay as far as mob movies go but is it just me or was it nearly too confusing to be believed.
The acting is brilliant, the music underlined scenes beautifully and the opening scene at the wedding in particular holds so much atmosphere, it could have been a home movie. However despite the charming first half hour, I was quickly lost as the story flicks between the Corleone’s struggle to become "legitimate buisnessmen" (among other things – trying not to give away the game!) and the other, more pleasant family side of things. For me it never quite came together and I honestly had to rewind key scenes to even partially understand what happened. Let’s face it, 70’s sound recording wasn’t great, and brings with it a certain amount of deterioration.
On the whole, if you’re on a long haul flight, have plenty of time to kill, or insomnia (no joke this is the 3rd attempt at watching this film, makes me yawn) this is the film for you.
4/10 for style and amazing casting.

Esta vez quisimos traerles una recomendación musical y es que nos encontramos con que Scarlett Johansson ha sacado un disco, llamado Break Up, mismo que realiza con Peter Yorn, el material está inspirado en el dueto del francés Serge Gainsbourg y Brigitte Bardot de los años 60.

Y eso nos recuerda a grandes de la música que de unos años para acá han revivido a través de sus creaciones melódicas, artistas como: April March y su Chic Habit al ritmo de los 70 que trajo Tarantino en su Death Proof (2007), o que ahora para Inglourious Basterds(2009) ha traído a Zarah Leander y su estilo de los años 30, dando muestra de que no sólo se puede retomar sonidos, sino traerlos directo del pasado para que las nuevas generaciones tengan acceso a ellos.

Aquí les dejamos una muestra de lo que hacían estás grandes en sus tiempos, y de lo que quiere hacer Johansson reviviendo sus estilos.

This feels cleansing.

Earlier this evening, I was floundering: unable to decide what to do with the remains of a slow-cooked pork roast. Looked at, and discarded, many recipes without even testing them. Finally, I decided to throw in a few slices of apple, a scattering of brown sugar, some vintage cheddar – of course – and toast the whole caboodle up in Daisy, our migrated sandwich toaster. The apple offset the vaguely ’school dinner’ taste of the roast, most excellently. All of this is by way of saying, I still don’t appreciate bands who slavishly copy the past – yes, I’m still looking your way, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart – even while I can’t help but relish points of common interest.

Pocketbooks sound like the sort of group The Famous Five would’ve formed, post-university and still not jaded, Georgie having given up all pretension to be a lesbian: butter wouldn’t melt, burnished bright and crystal-clear – confident, ah yes, confident. You must be confident to create such sweet April March pop music as this. Everything is florid. Everything is tempered. Everything is left to linger for a few more special moments in the warm summer air, before another flourish of brass, another timpani of piano comes breezing in. Someone whispered “The Siddeleys” to me, but that merely put me off. I don’t do obscure unless there’s a good reason for it.

This is Bacharach, and this is Bob Stanley. This is all those 60s pop groups who never aspired to be as cocky or salacious as The Shangri-La’s. This is 6pm practice for choral song after school. This is The Pale Fountains. This is Dickon Edwards. This is Sarah Records without any delusions of inadequacy. None of these might seem to be recommendations to you – same as my hastily-discovered solution to meat leftovers might seem even vaguely palatable – but shit. I know what I like, and I like this.

The female singer’s voice reminds me of Wendy from The Popguns. How can I not like this? We all need our secret local crushes.

Let’s get back on track: we’re recording our first Podcast, produced and mixed!! Yay!! Yes, we’re fancy. And no, it’s not in English. Sorry. So, just to compensate it, we’ll produce Mixtapes and we’ll try to read all of our e-mails of new bands and so on. It’s a promise.

Here’s more French stuff for you, after some Serge and Jane. And also because it’s the Year of France in Brazil (and I wonder if Brazil will have another year in France).

This months absolute favorite: April March “Cet Air-La”

Elinor Blake aka April March was born in California, April 20,1965. She is an so called indie pop singer/ songwriter and as she was early confronted with France her songs are in English an French. Because of this fascination for France her songs do reflect the French 1960s pop music.

In 1987 March formed her first band “The Pussywillows”, 4 years later in 1991 the band broke up and March formed “The Shitbirds” which lasted until 1995. Since then March recorded as a solo artist.

Her best known work is the translation of “Laisse tomber les filles” as “Chick Habit.” The song has since been featured in a few Hollywood movies.

We’ll focus on the song “Cet Air-La” which appeared on the EP “Chick Habit” in 1995.

It’s a wonderful, deep song which lets u just melt away and escape from our daily grind… Enjoy

Today April March’s cd Paris in April came in the mail; we listened to it in the car while driving to Open Eye and Trader Joe’s.

There are songs in both English and French on this album, and they sound reminiscent of 1960s pop (according to other reviews online, they sound particularly similar to French 1960s pop, which is something I’m not really familiar with). The first track, “Chick Habit,” and it’s English equivalent “Laisse Tomber les Filles,” are both catchy (obviously, since they’re the same song) and would be fun to dance to.  Another of the French songs is a cover of a Serge Gainsbourg song.

Anne reports that she likes track 3, “While We’re Young,” which also appears as track 10, “Temps de l’Amour.”  The song sounds fun and retro-y to me.  I don’t understand why the same song has different names in English and in French.  I’m also wondering if the song repetition would get tiresome if I were listening to the album properly and not in the car while listening.  I will listen to it again at some point and report back on this.  At this point, I think I like the French tracks a bit more than the English ones, if only because the use of French language makes them seem exotic and fun.  Maybe this cd is a good way to test how people respond to the same thing presented in different languages…

p.s. Had my first Italian soda since I came back from Nepal at Open Eye.  Almond flavor with whole milk.  Delicious.

I don’t know about anyone else, but, when a chick’s cancer goes into remission, that’s a green light to bang every babe in sight and bribe them with hush money.  I think Socrates said that.

I don’t know what I’m doing sometimes.

I know what I like and don’t like. I know what makes me laugh or cry (been a while since I’ve done that, maybe just sad) or just plain happy. But what if I took the plain out of it. What makes me really happy. (That is besides gunning a GT3 through the Nurburgring.) This is where I’m stuck. I don’t know. But I know it has something to do with the heart.
The heart in all it’s importance and pressure escapes me. Sure I’ve felt it’s beauty before. Oh, I have. In all it’s power and glory I’m a witness. But I’ve also felt when it’s empty. But most of the time it’s just there waiting to be touched. This is where I find myself today.

We choose who we want to take a drink from our heart. But how do we choose???
Like most men, I’m cursed and blessed with a penis. What I mean is it’s a great general but a horrible scout. The penis rarely points in the right direction. It’s got radar for SHIT.  If it were a GPS it would always lead you to the city dump then proceed to empty your pockets and slap you in the face. “It ain’t ever been right.” But I keep looking to it for direction. Why are we as men so stupid???  And does it ever change.??? Do we ever take the hint and start making sound choices with our penis or are we just doomed to follow the path always taken? We have a problem or just a…

So this is where I’ve been. Leading with the magic stick and hoping the heart will follow.
I thought I had it all figured out. I was gonna separate the two. Unleash the penis and muzzle the heart. I would bask in the glory of the penis and ignore the heart. That is give the penis (with protection) but withhold my heart. This would surely solve everything. Right!? L.A. was the perfect place. The land of beautiful people and shallow hearts. And it was…

But something was wrong. I wasn’t full. Something was lacking. It must have been the city. So I left to tour the Bay Area. In the Bay, things must be different. It’s where I grew up and the Bay Area does pride itself on being about so much more. Right?.  Plus my family lives here.
Well, it wasn’t the location.  It was me.

It took a stranger with a big beautiful heart and a mutual understanding to make me realize what was smack dab in my face all the time…
We don’t have to LOOK. It’s already there. We have it inside of us. All of us. It’s called LOVE. And it’s not for HIRE nor for SALE. It’s ours and only ours. We can’t give it to anyone. And no one can take it from us.

It’s what we allow ourselves to feel. When we meet someone that gets our heart pounding we think an exchange of the heart must occur. We must give up ours in exchange for theirs. An arbitrage of the heart. But I say NO!!! Close the market. Hearts are at stake here. Instead just…

Breathe, reflect, and give your heart a big kiss. You did this not your mate. You are the magician of your heart. You work the magic. Others are too clumsy with things that don’t belong to them.  You allowed yourself to feel this way now take possession.
I’m not being heartless. On the contrary. I’m saying love yourself and never stop. Don’t look for approval or even mutual feelings. Just give it to yourself. Just give it to yourself, I say. That connection, that sensation, that  weightlessness, we all feel with our mate is so amazing that we think we must give up the very thing that allows us to feel so great. Well I say resist the urge. Your heart will thank you.

Some will think this is just a protectionist theory. That is, don’t let your heart get broken 101. But it’s not. It’s a right tool for the job theory. You can still give love and love someone. If fact,  I say give more.  As much as you want. The world needs more love not less. But understand that this act is something beautiful you gave yourself not someone else doing. The ultimate it’s ME not YOU. A selfish but positive act if you will that resulted in an emotion that made you feel good. Notice the “positive”. If negative acts make your heart pitter-pat than you are a monster and have no heart.
But if a beautiful sunset, a rainy morning, an innocent smile from a child, an intimate moment with your mate, or a song, really touches you…Then just breathe, reflect, and give your heart a kiss.

From the unparalleled musical Chicago, which I still think is the best movie musical. I wasn’t too keen on the song when I first watched the movie, but it has grown on me tremendously.

I featured Heavy before, and now Move. I love Hudson’s powerful voice on the song, plus it’s always nice to hear Beyonce only in the background, makes me think how papa knowles felt.

Happy Feet’s movie single. It’s a guilty pleasure of mine, I used to like it a lot when it first came out, it’s still special to me.

From the movie Dogma (lol). It’s not my favorite Alanis soundtrack song but I featured my favorite many times ago (Let’s Do It (Let’s Fall In Love)) so it’s time for something new, it’s classic Alanis.

Falling In Love Again (Can’t Help It) – Christina Aguilera [Download]
Best for last, this is one of Christina’s most sultry songs, not so much in the lyrics as much as the way she sings and the music. It’s 8 minutes long, it’s an established classic in MY book.
