FLOWER BLOSSOM BLOOM and FLOURISH

From a Mentor to a Mentee

By

VIKRAM KARVE

Long back I learnt a trick from an eminent trainer on how to get the audience to focus. I too use this technique on a few occasions when I want my audience to settle down to receptive vibes.

The moment you take the stage, you tell the audience to close their eyes for one minute and think of the one person who they consider as their most important mentor.

A few days ago, one of my brilliant ex-students, who attended a motivational lecture in her new organization and was subjected to the same exercise, rang me up and told me that it was my face that came to her mind as a mentor. Then she talked about her work, that she was not very happy with her new workplace which apparently did not measure up to her high expectations. I feel privileged that my ex-student considers me a mentor and I write this “pep talk” especially for her and all my dear mentees, protégées and protégés .

YOU MUST KNOW HOW TO FLOWER WHERE GOD HAS SOWN YOU

Every person, sooner or later, goes through a moment when it seems that he or she is on the wrong road, that his entire way of life is wrong.

Have you ever experienced this feeling?

Think about it.

Do you find yourself stuck in an incongruous career or in an incompatible relationship or in a redundant place?

And sadly there is nothing you can do about it, owing to compulsions and constraints beyond your control.

You cannot turn around and retrace your steps or change your road of life.

It seems you have crossed the point of no return and you have no choice but to keep on travelling on the “wrong” road of life.

Failure follows failure.

And with repeated failure comes the fear of failure.

It is indeed a terrible vicious cycle which gradually overwhelms you with the chill of despondency.

What can you do in such a situation?

Maybe the answer lies in a saying I read somewhere a few years ago and noted in my diary:

“ Ou Dieu vous a seme, il faut savoir fleurir ”

which roughly translated means

“You must know how to flower where God has sown you” or “wherever God plants you, there you must learn how to bloom”.

How does one learn to flower where God has sown you, bloom wherever God plants you?

One may turn to the Enchiridion of Epictetus for guidance.

Epictetus (A.S.55 – A.D. 135), the great Stoic Philosopher, states that happiness and freedom begin with a clear understanding of one principle: Some things are within our control, and some things are not in our control.

This is the basic Stoic truth of subjective consciousness and it is only after you have faced up to this fundamental rule and learned to distinguish between what is in your power from what is not in your power, and know what you can control and what you cannot control, that inner tranquility and outer effectiveness become possible.

On analytical reflection we find that the mind alone can be brought under our control. Everything else, the world of events and people’s behaviour, is beyond the scope of our control.

What disturbs you are not events but your attitude towards them. Don’t demand or except that events happened as you would wish them to. Accept events as they actually happen. And you will be at peace with yourself.

Except for extreme physical abuse, other people cannot hurt you unless you allow them to. Don’t consent to be hurt and you won’t be hurt.

You must learn to approach life as a banquet and not as a buffet. Think of your life as if it were a banquet where you would behave graciously, when dishes are pass to you, extend your hand and help yourself to a moderate portion. If a dish should pass you by, enjoy what is already on your plate. Or is a dish hasn’t being passed to you yet, patiently to your turn. Carry on the same attitude of polite restrain and gratitude to your children, spouse, career and money. There is no need to yearn, envy and grab. You will get your rightful share when it is your time.

It then becomes our paramount duty to control the mind and practice total unconcern to externals. “When something happens, the only thing in your power is your attitude toward it; you can either accept it or resent it.”

To accept an event is to rise above it, to resent it to be overpowered by it. With acceptance come happens, with resentment, misery.

Acceptance of an event is not to be mistaken for a life of passivity or submission to fatalism characterized by laziness and a sense of helplessness. “Simply doing nothing does not avoid risk, but heightens it.” Epictetus exhorts us, therefore, to brave the storms of life with planned action born of clear thinking. He recognizes, too, the practical necessity of working for worldly gains, but cautions us only against the false belief that happiness depends on the results such endeavours.

Being an integral part of social structure, you cannot live in isolation; social interaction is inescapable. In your relationship with others at home, at work or in society, no matter how people behave, you have to maintain inner tranquility, with unwavering attention on achieving your own merit and excellence. People act under their own inner compulsions over which you can exercise no control. Epictetus advises: “Focus not on what he or she does, but on keeping to your higher purpose.” He assures that if you truly live in tune with your will and resolve, and in harmony with your inner self, nobody’s words or actions (barring extreme cases) can disturb your mental equipoise.

This glorious attitude to life and knowledge of your self makes you free in a world of dependencies and enables you to flower where God has sown you, to bloom wherever God plants you.

Wherever God plants you, there you must learn how to bloom.
You must know how to flower where God has sown you.

Native Dancer never measured anything, except his opponents’ shortcomings. But he is an outstanding example of how biomechanical analysis can work to help breeders understand the complexity of successful matings and trends in the game.

A grandly made, massively muscled son of Preakness winner Polynesian and the winning Discovery mare Geisha, Native Dancer reshaped the breed in his own image.

It is not the image that was preeminent in his own time, however. The transitional aptitudes of the classic-quality miler who excelled at 10 furlongs was the beau ideal of the 1940s through the 1960s, when Nasrullah and his son Bold Ruler were the most important influences on American breeding, ably assisted by Princequillo and his great son Round Table.

These horses were beautifully balanced in their physical quality and in their biomechanical properties, as well. And if they had a degree of mechanical imbalance about them, it tended to be toward stride length. They were good-bodied, medium-sized to big horses with speed and stamina. A breeder, however, would never mistake a Nasrullah for a Quarter Horse, which is the archetype of the power profile in mechanical development.

On the other hand, Native Dancer possessed those power characteristics of the Quarter Horse allied with size and scope that allowed him to excel at distances from five furlongs to a mile and a half. Native Dancer, in terms of his physical traits, was out of synch with much of the breed by having so much more power than the typical strains of Thoroughbred used by major breeders.

At first it seems illogical that horses you might call “imbalanced” can be outstandingly successful, but a good horse who is not mechanically balanced is exceptionally developed in one respect or another.

Examples of this type include the once-beaten Native Dancer, as well as his son, the important sire Raise a Native. While Native Dancer was a good sire during his own lifetime, it was only after his death, through his sons and daughters, that Native Dancer’s full impact on the breed began to develop and transform the breed.

In the case of Native Dancer and his descendants, the breed norms have drifted in the direction of the great gray himself. Although considered to be only a good stallion during his own lifetime, Native Dancer had a transcendent influence on the breed, and his lasting contribution seems greater over time.

This result cannot be explained simply by the preference for Native Dancer by breeders themselves. Instead, the traits that Native Dancer possessed: considerable body length, very good size, and a very large hip and hind leg – have become standardized among an elite population of stallions and mares.

For reasons that are partly social and partly economic, the traits that Native Dancer possessed had never become standard among the elite breeding stock of the Thoroughbred. For one thing, the great breeders of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century wanted to breed the classic horse, the horse who could excel over a mile and a quarter to a mile and three-quarters at 3, and the great majority of the power types would never be able to do this.

Native Dancer was able to carry his speed, and he came to prominence at a time when the economics of the sport were shifting rather dramatically from aristocratic domination by a handful of families and breeders. From the 1950s to the present, the influx of “new wealth” into Thoroughbred racing and breeding has propelled the value of Thoroughbreds upward by a factor of 50 to 100 times what they were worth a half-century ago.

The influence of this economic boom also has created a fully developed commercial marketplace for racehorses, and the buyers at these markets want action. They want horses who are going to be fast, contend for the important prizes, and perhaps they can make it to the classics, as well.

And the model for the “modern commercial Thoroughbred” is Native Dancer: big, round-bodied, strongly muscled, with a long hip, big gaskin, and shoulder. These are the traits of the biomechanical power horse.

Even among this tribe, there are variants. The most classic of these, led by the Fappiano and Unbridled crowd, also includes some unrelated but similar individuals, and their traits have become the preferred qualities many of the best performers in the breed who can stay 10 furlongs.

Some of the other strains of the power horse tribe are life and death to stay past a mile, and in that, they are showing the tendency of the purely power horse to gravitate toward short distances. For, while Native Dancer and his descendants have produced a gravitational shift in the breed, the forces of nature are apparently swinging back toward a more classic and better mechanically balanced type of horse that will take us through the coming decades.

In selecting broodmares and mating them to stallions, there are almost as many opinions as there are

In selecting broodmares and mating them to stallions, there are almost as many opinions as there are buyers. Really promising physiques attract my attention, especially when allied with good racing performance. I tend to evaluate this in terms of biomechanical quality. (There are several posts on this blog regarding biomechanics available to read from last month.)

Kerry Thomas, who has developed Thomas Herding Technique, uses equine psychology and behavior characteristics to evaluate prospects. Read more about Thomas and his approach here, which also includes a 10-minute video with trainer Bob Baffert.

Another line of evaluation is deep pedigree theory and study, such as that used by Franco Varola, developer of the typology of Thoroughbred aptitudes that he described using dosage. I wrote about Varola just a few days ago (here) and was thrilled to find that Varola, as consultant to breeder Audley Farm, was involved in the production of both a mare that I own and her half-sister, whom Thomas selected as an outstanding foundation mare at the recently concluded Keeneland November sale.

The primary attraction in my purchase of G2 winner Lemhi Go was her racing class, which was quite high, allied with her pedigree. She carries no Raise a Native, and her only Northern Dancer is through that stallion’s son Giboulee, sire of Lemhi Go’s dam Midnight Rapture. Not surprisingly for a high-class racemare, Lemhi Go is a scopey mare with quality and presence. She also has a smooth, lengthy walk that is lovely to watch.

In evaluating her half-sister Rare Beauty at Keeneland, Thomas noted that Rare Beauty “was in a class by herself” as a broodmare. Thomas makes his observations purely by eye, watching horses alone or in company with others. Using the horse’s own actions to gain insight about its attitudes, he said that Rare Beauty was “the most emotionally sound, mentally prepared, highest herd dynamic mare of the sale.”

Makes her sound like a crackerjack, right? Well, she was one impressive specimen. Standing 16.3 hands, Rare Beauty was typical of her sire, Quiet American. She was quite big all over, very ruggedly made with strong bone and tendons, and well-conformed.

She has a high wither, great length through the body, and a good eye. I suspect that her stature and commanding presence caught Thomas’s eye. His summation was that “Rare Beauty’s inner character and behavioral dynamics (both Group Herd Dynamic and Individual Herd Dynamic) far exceeded her peers.”

In foal to Kentucky Derby winner Smarty Jones, the mare sold for $20,000 to NW Management, agent.

The key for breeders who want to use finely tuned specialists for breeding stock is, first, to recognize the principal traits of the horses to whom they are breeding and, second, to decide how they want to direct their breeding and racing or sales program.

There is no point in a breeder thinking he wants to try to breed quick 2-year-olds or early-maturing 3-year-olds and then sending his mare to a light weight (E Type) turf performer who only won Grade 1 stakes at 12 furlongs on turf at ages 4 and 5.

That’s a recipe for disaster or, at least, slow horses.

But putting a breeder into a mode of analyzing his horses and his goals for breeding is the first major step in moving toward a rational program that can be tested and evaluated. And in time, it should yield very good results within the budget and environment where the breeder operates.

Once a breeder really understands his stock and what he wants to do with them, then he can cull with a purpose, replace mares for the right reasons, and plan matings that all are steps toward his goal.

This sort of rationalized breeding and operating plan is the basis of most highly successful breeding operations, whether they use biomechanics in their programs or not.

And thinking deeply about horses is a personally rewarding way of being involved with them and creating a program that offers a breeder more enjoyment and potentially more reward for the investment made to produce it.

More breeders have been turned off by unrealistic claims for biomechanical evaluations than most any

More breeders have been turned off by unrealistic claims for biomechanical evaluations than most anything else.

The process is fascinating for those interested in statistics, is sometimes immensely enlightening for breeders, and offers some captivating options for looking at horses from a different perspective.

But biomechanical analysis will NOT give anyone a silver bullet to kill the game. Nothing is that easy. And breeding racehorses is complex, puzzling, exhilarating, and humbling. There are so many facets that nothing is going to solve the equation and resolve all the variables.

Which, if you like the sport, is a good thing.

One of the things that biomechanics does give us is an outline of the different types of racehorses and the individual strengths that allow them to succeed under different conditions. The horses with the best biomechanical balance tend to be the most versatile, and they also tend to be more consistent in reproducing their form.

For instance, in a race with a very strong pace, a horse with a good balance of stride and power can lay reasonably close because of its efficient stride, without burning too much energy, then power for home as less efficient horses tire.

In contrast, the horses who are not so balanced in their mechanical qualities but who are nonetheless very finely tuned in respect to stride or power can be exceptional horses. English Derby winner Slip Anchor, an exhorbitantly talented stride racer, needed to be ridden gusto to give him maximum use of his exceptional stride and place his opponents in the predicament of having to go with him or having to try to catch him. At his best, that was nearly impossible.

While Northern Dancer and Raise a Native are examples of mechanically balanced Type I horses from the 3-year-old crop of 1964, two leading members of the 1966 crop of 3-year-olds were more specialized. Buckpasser was a Type II, with emphasis for power in his mechanics, and Graustark was a Type II who had more stride. Each was a tremendous athlete and became an important sire, and both were quite close to the Type I center.

As stallions who were very popular, and experienced considerable success, Buckpasser and Graustark are examples of what a more specialized stallion can accomplish at stud, and these two horses indicate the various aptitudes present in the Thoroughbred.

But it was not poor genetics or planning that made it difficult for Buckpasser and Graustark to breed on in the male line yet succeed more greatly as sires of broodmares. Instead it was opportunity. Their sons, who were more specialized and somewhat farther from the norms of the breed than their sires, had fewer opportunities to cover mares compatible with their specialized traits. The daughters of Buckpasser and Graustark, however, were well suited as mates for biomechanically balanced, high-class horses such as Northern Dancer, who had extraordinary success when crossed with Buckpasser mares, for instance.

It appears I married a freak. Well, not so much a freak, but a man of freakish intelligence. Boyfriend is the annoying type of person that will nail an exam or assessment with (or what appears to be) minimal effort. Boyfriend combines study techniques with an amazing aptitude and masters any exam.

A couple of months ago he decided to make a go at the incredibly difficult exams that are GAMSATS. He committed to studying, but did not do all that much. He did not even buy the right books. He considered this attempt a practice round. Following the exam he dismissed his attempt as a waste of time. Based on track record and his modesty, I knew there was a chance he’d nailed it. As I said, he’s phenomenal like that.

The results for the UK GAMSATS were published this morning. Boyfriend attained the mark he needed. He’s amazing. I mean he’s incredible. I’ve never met anyone like him.

Lyddie and I haven’t done any reading practice for weeks. Peter and Jane have been abandoned on the sideboard since she lost interest in them back then. I started getting a bit concerned this week, thinking the development of her reading skill might be stagnating, especially since she’s been really enjoying hearing me read to her for about an hour a day, when we started on the Famous Five series ten days or so ago, but not expressing any desire to try to read them to herself.

I mentioned Peter and Jane this week, when my throat was aching from Famous Five reading, saying something like: “You’re not too far off being able to read these to yourself, you know. We should get back to Peter and Jane and work on your reading skill again,” and she said: “Hmm, well, I’d quite like to be able to read this Thumbelina book to myself.”

I opened it, glanced at a page and told her: “Well, you might be able to. Give it a go?” – not, to be quite honest, at all confident that she could, it being quite well in advance of the Peter and Jane she’d abandoned on the sideboard in frustration weeks before. She picked it up and read a page out loud – slowly, but quite smoothly. And another, and another. She was as amazed as I was that she could do it so well, and so easily. We were both delighted: it was a lovely surprise.

I’d forgotten that about the natural learning process. There often has to be a period of leaving it alone for quiet absorption and/or deep processing to take place. If you systematically push something every day remorselessly, even after the student wants to stop, that’s damaging – or at best, impeding. But if you’re able to be completely responsive and stop at the right time (i.e. when the learner says they’ve had enough) then something seems to happen subconsciously in the break – a consolidation process.

She’s picking up books a lot now, reading the odd page here and there and delighting in the fact that she can.

The same has been happening with numbers. We haven’t done any workbooks for a while, and she’s been doing mental arithmetic. “Do you know, Mum, 7 and 7 is 14, and 14 and 14 is 28?” A visitor made the mistake of asking her what 28 and 28 is then, and she told them she didn’t want to know the answer to that.

There’s always someone who wants to take charge of her learning process for her and start trying to lead it! But I’m sure that slows her down.

When considering credit restoration, your credit report plays the most important tool to show how we

When considering credit restoration, your credit report plays the most important tool to show how well your financial status is. It is where your credit information on how you frequently make payments for what you owe and what so very financial issues you may have.

If you have a poor credit report, it will definitely have a negative impact on you resulting in not getting financial services as you want. Fair Credit Reporting Act is one of the most critical credit repair legalities. This is primarily created to give you the aptitude to dispute any concerns that you may identify on your credit reports. However, beware of those agencies that says they can get rid your credit report errors in no time. They should do it in legal manners.

What exactly is a credit restoration bad credit? Many of us see negative information in our credit report and many of those errors may not be correct that’s why it is very important that you check your credit report properly. If you can not do that on your own, you want to seek for help from various specialists available or else, you will end up spending much money on credit repair agencies for nothing. The agene can only dispute an item on your credit report after an extensive investigation into the accuracy of your credit report. But of course, it is always better if you can handle the entire concern by doing a self help credit repair on your own.

In case you find any negative information on your credit, you may want to contact a credit reporting agency and get the problem fixed as soon as you can. But, if you are looking for credit restoration of a damaged credit then you will have to prove your accusation with enough proof. The explanation why this problem happens is because of handling large number of data. You need to know if the problem happened because of human error or fraud. If it is the former then getting the problem rectified may be an easy task but if there is the latter, then you might even have to request for a police report as a evidence.

Restoring Credit compromises several credit repair terms that a times it is very confusing. Sometime you just fail to understand what your creditor or financial advisor are trying to say about your financial needs. If you are working on improving your credit then it is good to learn at least the basic credit repair terms like ACH (Automated Clearing House) etc. ACH debit account basically allows you to withdraw funds from your bank electronically making it easier and faster than using a mail service.

When working on rebuilding your credit, hiring a debt counselor can also be a great help most especially if you are not able to keep up with the amounts of due your get. More importantly, make sure you will seek a help from a reputable and well established company.
