I recently finished a quilt for Linda Poole. Click HERE and scroll down just beyond where she lists her teaching schedule for AQS.

I had a blast quilting this for Linda. At Linda’s site click on the photo for the enlarged view and take a peek at the all the words on the quilt. The “story” starts near the center of the quilt 4th row down 4th block in with “the quiet calm of dawn” and wends it’s way around – sort of in a clock wise spiral to the 1st block of the 3rd row with ‘fresh fish for dinner on my plate’. Some of the words are sideways & upside down in the picture…just the nature of quilting. The fish that are quilted in the non fish fabric blocks were quilted from the back. This was a fun quilt to quilt!

This picture is from one of the color fixes Linda posted a while back. I saved it to my computer and one day hope to do something like this in thread. I’m thinking no more than a 10 x 10 to 15 x 15 piece, black Kona cotton and Superior Brytes. I’m thinking for this I’ll need to graph out the general details before I start stitching.

This project will be thread heavy by the time I’m done, but oh so much fun to do.

Thread is such an inspiration. When I started quilting back in ‘93 cotton meant for hand quilting was it and that was solid colors. The thread on the market now is just as, if not more, inspiring with the wide variety of texture and color! I’m also more confident branching out and using a wider variety of thread from fine cottons to silk. Understanding how to adjust tension and learning that different threads need different needles has made such a huge difference.

I love going to quilt shows! I’m looking forward to the AQS Show in Lancaster this spring! Then there’s MQX in Providence, RI; NSQG in May and the Village Squares Quilters show November 13 & 14, 2010.

This pineapple quilt is from one of the smaller guild show’s I’ve attended in the last couple of years. I took a close up of the quilting on here because I liked how the quilter filled the space so effectively.

I like winding ways and would love to make one sometime soon (I see a class in this) One thing that I really like about this pattern is the visual circles that pop out as a secondary pattern in the piecing. I love the Storm at Sea block for this very reason. With some planning this quilts are quite stunning whether 2 color quilts or multi color in this one. The curved border on this quilt really caught my attention. I like that the quilter went with something other than the straight edge.

I’m inspired by the speakers who come to our guild. The ones I remember most (at the moment) are Susan Schrott, Eleanor Levie, Elin Waterston, Jane Davila, Lacey Hill, Bonnie McCaffrey, Meg Cox for many reasons including their enthusiasm & confidence in presenting and sharing their craft with us. Every speaker has something to share with us that we can take to our quilting.

I’m inspired by the quilters in the guilds and mini groups that I’m privileged to be a member of…

many of these quilter have some amazing talent and they just love to quilt.

Renee, Mary Anne, Jeri are all quilters who are all willing to share their work more publicly.

Giovanna has given me permission to share this picture of her stained glass quilt.

I’m also inspired so much by my students. Their energy & enthusiasm is quite catching. My teaching schedule is here.

The Advanced Machine quilting class should be fun.

I’m also looking forward to teaching the cover girl quilt from this book. As I’m putting this quilt together I’m realizing how right up my sleeve this quilt is! It is all about being organized and having some fun with fabric. I’d hoped to be further along with the piecing of the shop sample at this moment but being away for 5 days really put me behind!

I’m slowly catching up!

Happy quilting!

Teri

*I see on the blog itself a couple of pictures aren’t showing for some reason…click where the pics are and they will open up.

Mariya Waters attended the American Quilters Society in Paducah KY in April 2009. While standing “on line” at a concession, I hear a lovely accent ask for a bottle of “wah-tuh.” Immediately I knew this must be an Aussie, because we Yanks ask for “wadder” with a very hard “r.” Imagine my pleasure at making the acquaintance of the Best of Show Winner who is indeed an Aussie, and a lovely one at that. So imagine my great appreciation at being asked to teach at the Australasian Quilt Convention in April 2010. Below are photos and descriptions of the two classes I will be teaching, and there is a link to the website where you can register. I can’t think of a better time as April “Down Under” will be going into Autumn, and the host city of Melbourne is beautiful. The show site is on the Yarra River in a city that is easy and safe to navigate. Come join us!

Double Wedding Ring

The Double Wedding Ring ranks as one of the most “I want to make that” quilts, but is also one of the most feared because of the curved piecing. In this class you will use the Curve Master Presser Foot which allows easy sewing of curves with no pinning or clipping, making the quilt accessible to all quilters regardless of experience. Sandra provides all tools needed for use in class. Skill level: Intermediate. No curve piecing experience required. Kit will include at least 1-1/2 yards of top quality cotton fabric, accurately die cut in pieces matching the Just Curves acrylic templates, as required for sewing. Taught on Thursday April 29, 2010.

In this class you will use the Curve Master presser foot to easily sew curves with no pinning or clipping, making the quilt accessible to all quilters regardless of experience. The Winner’s Circle block benefits from embellishment to create a stunning result with pleated fabric. In this class you will learn how to: ‘torture’ and distort pleats for visual impact; rotary cut using acrylic templates; piece curves and straight seams with an accurate scant 1/4” seam; incorporate embellished fabric into a quilt design. You will complete several blocks in class. Sandra will provide a number of tools for use in class which will be available for optional purchase. Skill level: Intermediate. No curve piecing experience required.

Since Java 5, we have thread level blocking primitives for creating locks and other synchronization

Since Java 5, we have thread level blocking primitives for creating locks and other synchronization classes. It is easy to build locks using spinlocks that would scale well especially if no of CPUs can match no of threads spinning. It could also waste memory cycles if contending threads outnumbers CPUs available. A prudent strategy is to do some spinning followed by blocking/ unblocking and some more spinning – all in a loop till the system is in a desirable state. No of spin cycles can be customized. Blocking mechanics could become a little complex. A lot of code gets executed from the time its decided that a thread should block to the actual blocking, providing opportunities to slip in some more spinning. Blocking primitives LockSupport.park() & LockSupport.unpark(Thread th) ( and their variants ) are in package java.util.concurrent.locks. In general, a thread Thread- like to block ( LockSupport.park() ) if the system is not in a desired state. It will be blocked till another thread Thread-B change that state in such a way that Thread-A can make progress. Here Thread-B is expected to wakeup Thread-A( LockSupport.unpark(Thread-A). For Thread-B to wakeup Thread-A, Thread-A needs to save its reference to some data structure that Thread-B can access. Here is what JavaDoc says about LockSupport.

“Methods park and unpark provide efficient means of blocking and unblocking threads that do not encounter the problems that cause the deprecated methods Thread.suspend and Thread.resume to be unusable for such purposes: Races between one thread invoking park and another thread trying to unparkit will preserve liveness, due to the permit”.

To understand the internal mechanics of LockSupport, here is one such implementation uning intrinsic lock. Pl. let me know if you find any bug with this code.

Practically speaking, Class java.util.concurrent.locks.AbstractQueuedSynchronizer provides everything needed to write custom synchronizers using a mix of spinning/ blocking primitives.

package sanjay.concurrent.example;

import java.util.concurrent.ConcurrentHashMap;

public class MyLockSupport {

final static ConcurrentHashMap<Long, Boolean> map = new ConcurrentHashMap<Long, Boolean>();
public static void park() {

Thread thread = Thread.currentThread();
Long threadId = thread.getId();

synchronized ( thread ) {
while ( !isSignalled(threadId) ) {
try {
thread.wait();
} catch ( InterruptedException ie) {
thread.interrupt();
return;
}
}
consumeSignal(threadId);
return;
}
}

public static void unpark(Thread thread) {
synchronized ( thread ) {
signal(thread.getId());
thread.notify();
}
}

private static boolean isSignalled(Long threadId) {
if ( map.get(threadId) == null ) {
return false;
}
return true;
}

private static void consumeSignal(Long threadId) {
map.remove(threadId);
}

private static void signal(Long threadId) {
map.put(threadId, SIGNAL);

It’s been a busy few weeks since I last posted. We had our local quilt show the first weekend

It’s been a busy few weeks since I last posted. We had our local quilt show the first weekend in Oct. I was in charge of the Silent Auction and the Quilts of Valor booth, we are trying to get a group started here in our area so we were talking up the program and handing out block kits that people can take home to sew and return.

On Sunday morning of the quilt show, my IntelliQuilter was delivered! This is a robotic quilting system that will ‘drive’ the longarm for me after I set up the design. I’ve wanted one of these for a very long time, so much so that I bought the second longarm to put it on! After several hours in the morning while Tony installed the machine and Helen trained me on it, it was back to the quilt show in the afternoon.

I only had 2 days to play with the IQ, then it was off to Des Moines, IA to attend the first AQS show held there. They put on the big show in Paducah, KY every year, but I’ve never been to that one since it is so far. Des Moines was only a 7 hour drive, so how could I not go? I went with Jeri, who is in my little art quilting group, and the last night there we compared the photos that we took. Funny, we both took pics of many of the same quilts, and they were all the artsy ones!

We decided to play a joke on Jeri’s DH – she was kidding him one time about buying a longarm quilting machine. We walked past a booth at the show and there was a SOLD sign on a HandiQuilter. So I got her picture with the machine and we emailed it to Johnny that evening with a note that he needed to send more money!

A nice bonus was the Des Moines Area Quilter’s Guild was having their show at the same time in the same venue for the same admission price. So we got to see 2 shows in one! There were some wonderful quilts in that show as well, and I was very impressed with how they hung their show. In each of the little ‘cubicles’ that are formed by the pipe and drape, the quilts were related in some way – they might all be oriental-themed, or all blue-and-white quilts, or all 30’s prints, etc. It really made for an exceptionally nice showing.

And this week it was back to reality, I actually worked all 5 days, all day! It’s about time, huh??? LOL

I’ve never been a fan of the whole “Happy Dance” thing, but here I am — doing the happy dance. Today’s mail brought me a brand new book from AQS: 100 Tips from Award Winning Quilters by Ann Hazelwood. It’s a tiny thing, no larger than a travel postcard. But somehow, it’s huge. And there, on page 9, is my tip!

When Ann first contacted me to participate, I was excited and skeptical. In fact, I didn’t actually believe my tip would show up until I opened the book and saw it for myself! Woo hoo!

If you buy the book, check out Mary Kerr’s tip on page 39. Lots and lots of good stuff by lots and lots of amazing quilters.

Okay, I’ll stop dancing now. But I’m still smiling…

Quilters continued to arrive in Paducah as the AQS Quilt Show & Contest entered the third day. Crowds seemed even larger today than during the past two days.

But then again, I have only been to the show in the afternoons since it has been a regular work week for me as well.

This morning dawned a beautiful day and the McCracken County Public Library garden captured this glorious view including a V.I.P. Charter tour bus. Quilters from Florida took time out from the show to take advantage of the library’s free internet and wireless access.

This afternoon many visitors took advantage of the final day for the AQS Collector Books backroom book sale. Deep discounts on discontinued titles as well as “hurt” books with minor wear and tear were still available to a flurry of hands that are more accustomed to making slow and painstaking quilt stitches. (photo right)

The AQS Book Fair, a new program this year, featured many favorite authors published by Collector Books. Paducah’s own Ro Morse participated with her new book, 100 Things to Enjoy in Historic Paducah, recently featured in Mary Thorsby’s ilist Paducah blog. (photo below)

Also featured at the Book Fair was quilter/author Judy Laquidara better known to her fans as Judy L. I will tell you more tomorrow about how fun it was meeting her today but in the meantime you can see more photos at Paducah Quilts and Quilters on flickr.

Well, we went to the quilt show yesterday in Paducah, KY. It was incredible! When I look at those quilts and then what I do in the way of quilting I know I am just a beginner. (someone else said that but it goes for me too, I am sure she won’t mind my repeating it, lol) The workmanship is fabulous and the designs are also. We got a great demonstration on the big Gammill Long Arm Quilter and the Statler Stitcher. It is by far the cadallic of the quilters in my opinion. (yes, I want one, no I won’t be getting one any time soon) Going to those shows inspires me to do more and try new things.

McGoldrick, selected as a Paducah Quilt Show semi-finalist for her landscape art quilt “Spring Time Wandering”, posted a question to the Canadian Quilters group on Facebook. Mary Hammond, Executive Director of the Paducah Convention & Tourist Bureau, noticed Calna’s inquiry as to whether there were other quilters traveling to Paducah who would want to meet at the Quilt Show.

Hammond shared her interest in meeting Calna with me and instantly we three began an online communication leading to face-to-face hugs and introductions today.

Calna visited with me at the McCracken County Public Library. Her warm greeting and gracious smile was only the beginning of a most enjoyable time spent getting to know each other.

Traveling with her 78 year old mother, Leone Orr, her sister, Pam Orchard, cousin Denise Watson, and friend Susan Neave, the adventurous group of women left home this past Sunday morning in a ‘98 van with the brake light glowing. After spending the first night in Dayton, Ohio, they arrived at a Kentucky Lake resort where they are camping for the week.

They enjoyed examining the quilts at the Expo Center this morning, but tomorrow they intend to “goof off” and try their hand at crappie fishing on Kentucky Lake. “I have my Kentucky Fishing License already!” she exclaimed.

The group will return to Paducah on Friday to shop and see more sights before leaving for home on Saturday.

I’m going to make an effort to post a few hands, which don’t involve all-in decisions or bad beats, which have been the majority of my posted hands in recent weeks so to kick things off, I’ll post a few hands from today :

First Game of the day, 2/4c NL cash game

I’m in early position, and raise to 4xBB with AQs. The flop is harmless enough, anyone who called a 4x raise should not hold a 2 or a 3 here, I may have been up against a small over pair though, I lead out with a bet of 2/3 the pot. I thought that might have ended it there, but I get two callers.

The turn brings only an inside straight and it checked around. The river brings a jack, which is a scary card for me, as the better could have easily called my pre-flop raise with AJ, KJ, QJ or even JT.

A few things go through my mind. I don’t want to get bluffed out of the first pot I have built up, and I was about to leave the table, if I fold here, I wouldn’t be happy until I regained my loss so considering the pot odds, I opted to make the call in case he was bluffing. It wasn’t an easy call, I came very close to folding, so actually think he made a good stab at it on the river, the downfall was his weak bet, against a stronger player I might interpret this as a value bet or trying to sell a call, etc but here it just looked too weak, if he had the jack he would be better much more, 40c at the lest, even with me checking down the turn. I was obviously dead to a pair, but would have expected a pair to wake up on the turn, and check on the river when the jack hit.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?1810086

$1 + $0.20 Sit-N-Go – 1

Here’s a hand I was very proud of, an aggressive and tricky opponent was representing trips. I had made numerous notes on him throughout the match, and went over every little detail I had on him, and eventually happy with my read, pushed all-in with A high. He fold and I take down the pot.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?1810869

A poor read in a similar situation against the same player, lead to my exit in 4th however, so I guess he got his revenge.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?1810918

Here’s a thread I’ve opened on the above hand, as I have doubts that I was committed to it, even against an aggressive player.

Kicker Trouble

$1 + $0.20 Sit-N-Go – 2

I was excited to see this flop, as you’d expect, but as is usual when I hit trips, theres a draw or two out there so I lead out. I’m less happy when I see 4 calls behind me, but I try and remain optimistic I’ll still be ahead at showdown, and take down a nice pot. Then the worst possible card comes which could complete a straight or the flush, I check and a player behind me makes a large bet, an all-in follows for only 75 more, and two callers call behind, I’m done with this hand.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?1811492

Do you ever get a feeling where you should play that total trash you pick up, well I had that feeling this time, I was tempted to see a flop with this actually, but having a short stack who had started to push all-in on acting behind me put me off, I didn’t want to threw on 100, only to have to drop it when the little guy moves in, I can’t call with this trash.

However, now and then its a good idea to see a flop with that trash you felt good about pre-flop, this is a prime example lol

http://www.pokerhand.org/?1811520

I play well up to this point, really well compared to how I feel I’ve been playing lately, and then I play this hand so fucking stupidly, that it puts my tournament on a knife edge, which of course stabbed me in the fucking chest when I push, and my opponent flops trips. I’m sick of loosing with the lead hand when I’m all-in, but its stupid play like this that put me in that position in the first place, so I have only myself to blame.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?1811562

I played that hand so stupidly, I new he would raise like that with any two cards and had beeing doing, as I couldn’t defend myself with a very short stack still hanging around at bubble time. On the flop I was sure I was way ahead, so instead of leading out an or coming over the top, I slow play it and let him bluff at it. The play on the turn was even worse, he could have easily been pushing the action with 78 and then re-raised with a straight.

I’m so angry with myself for blowing all my good work early on. I need a cup of tea!

Thats poker baby :p

Just ran unlucky in a second scheduled $0.50 tournament on Poker Stars, the final hand I’m for

Just ran unlucky in a second scheduled $0.50 tournament on Poker Stars, the final hand I’m forced to push all-in just before another blind increase with only around 9 big blinds. I’m praying everyone will fold, but the one guy I know who will call with anything, I get my wish and even before his cards are flipped I’m confident my cards are good.

I’m cooled on the flop though, I hit top pair with my ace but my opponent flops two pair, I don’t improve and I’m on the rail.

The turning point for me was having to abandon AQs after putting in too much money for the early stage of the tournament, I should have checked the flop rather then made a continuation bet, I played it dumb and paid the price.

Crap, it gets worse, after loading the hand I’ve just realized I wasn’t even suited, I shouldn’t have even limped in with this so early. I think the table dynamic put me off my usual game, it seemed tighter then usual, I was soon proved wrong, this was a very bad play.

http://www.pokerhand.org/?1779586

In slightly brighter news I sat in a standard Sit-N-Go earlier and cashed in 3rd, a little disappointed as I played well, but just couldn’t get past the big stack when 3 handed. I did take down too large pots with a couple of traps though, one when I was lucky enough to flop a nut flush and sold myself as weak to induce a bluff and another when I made trips with AJ.

I’ve just got off another (play) limit cash game, and got sucked out with rags so many times, I’m actually a little shocked I managed to leave with any money at all.

Here’s a little selection of my starting hands, all lost big time to rags which hit a set or full house, etc on the turn or river, often when I’ve hit trips, including trip aces!

AQ – x2
AT
TT
99

All my other hands I either folded (nearly all) or was allowed to limp in or check the blind with a suited connector (67s, 89s), if I missed the flop I’d then fold without much of a loss, but the above hands cost me virtually all my buy-in.

My 3rd AQ finally holds up tripling my money, but by now I’m so far behind that I’ve only just recovered my buy-in amount, another few hands with only rags appearing and I leave with the same amount that I bought in with, first time I haven’t made a loss or a profit.

I rise again with increased splendor.

Noticed some simple, but effective advise that I haven’t noticed in response to an earlier post I made on HPT. All totally right of course, online players are crap, I should target them and make them pay for there mistakes, not fear being sucked out on or go on tilt when some donkey gets lucky!

I’m laughing as I write this as it has totally just been affirmed, was playing pretty well on a short handed limit table, improving my play at a short handed game, when more loose aggressive players come on the scene…. I fold and wait, I fold and wait, I check, I fold and wait…. and then I hit my cards AQs and take a huge pot…. very next hand I hit my favorite holding AK, wasn’t suited this time, but I got the maximum out of all of my opponents, and tripled my money for the first time in ages on a FL table.

Very Happy
