Primitive, impériale, médiévale et toujours glorieuse…

Capitale du monde antique, capitale du monde chrétien, cité libre entre les collines et les rives du Tibre, Rome livre sans réserve et à ciel ouvert, témoignages archéologiques et ruines historiques à la curiosité des voyageurs. Rome est aujourd’hui une ville grisante, fascinante, séduisante et divinement belle depuis qu’elle a retrouvé sa splendeur d’antan, après la minutieuse restauration de son centre historique. Même si la Cité Éternelle ne sera jamais une métropole hyper-moderne, le design a envahi espaces publics, hôtels, restaurants, bars et boutiques.

Cette alliance entre un passé omniprésent et une époque moderne frénétique déploie des charmes fracassants qui ne demandent qu’à être explorés. Il faut du temps pour apprivoiser Rome, un seul passage ne suffira qu’à provoquer une addiction sans cesse inassouvie. C’est avant tout pour satisfaire cette faim provoquée par la découverte de cette sublime capitale il y a quatre ans, que nous avons décidé d’y passer à nouveau quelques jours.

Hébergement

Idéalement situé a quelques mètres de la Piazza di Spagna, l’Hôtel Mario De’ Fiori est un hôtel boutique exclusivement composé de suites. L’hôtel occupe les murs d’un édifice du 17ème siècle en plein cœur de Rome, entièrement restauré pour laisser place à un design où les espaces sont immaculés et les lignes minimalistes. À l’angle de la charmante Via della Croce et à quelques pas de la rue la plus chic de la ville où s’alignent les plus grandes marques de luxe, cet établissement de standing jouit d’un emplacement parfait pour sillonner la ville et visiter les principaux monuments.

L’accueil y fut très sympathique, les hôtesses agréablement serviables : elles ont tout fait pour que notre séjour soit idyllique. Nous n’avons croisé quasiment aucun autre client de l’hôtel malgré la petitesse du bâtiment, ce qui reste appréciable. Les attentions ont semblé de se fait, complètement personnalisées. Nous y avons passé un excellent séjour.

Restauration

Pour les amateurs de cuisine raffinée et hautes en couleurs, l’Italie offre généreusement ses saveurs méditerranéennes aux goûts de ‘Dolce Vita’. Bien décidés à déguster de bons produits, nous avons savouré notre premier diner au restaurant Obikà qui signifie ‘c’est ici’ en dialecte napolitain. L’orthographe a été particulièrement étudiée pour donner à ce nom un air japonais.

En effet, l’intérieur, avec son comptoir circulaire, ses hauts tabourets et ses bacs en plexi, est inspiré des bars à sushis. Cependant, Obikà est un bar à mozzarella. On y savoure une excellente mozzarella di bufala qui arrive chaque matin à 8h. On choisit d’abord celle que l’on souhaite déguster (plus ou moins goutue, crémeuse, fumée…) et ensuite on décide de l’accompagner avec un des nombreux délices proposés à la carte comme la bresaola (ultra fines tranches de bœuf mi-salées et séchées), le jambon cru San Daniele, ou les légumes grillés : simple, frais et sublimement bon. Et pour parfaire le tout, le restaurant propose un impressionnant choix de vins.

Le lendemain soir, c’est au Boccondivino que nous nous sommes installés, cet établissement étant fortement recommandé par les différents guides. Il faut avouer que sa situation promet un diner fort agréable : perdu au milieu d’étroites ruelles, il reste à l’écart du bruit et jouit d’une petite terrasse bien appréciable les nuits d’été.

Le rapport qualité/prix reste très intéressant pour une cuisine fusion plutôt pas mal sans être surprenante ni exceptionnelle. Le décor moderne allie acier, colonnes romaines, peaux de zèbre et art contemporain. Précisez à être installé en terrasse lors de votre réservation : le restaurant est plein tous les soirs.

Pour notre dernière soirée, nous avons souhaité nous faire plaisir en dinant sur la terrasse en plein ciel de l’hôtel Raphaël. Situé seulement à quelques enjambées de la Piazza Navona, sa sublime façade entièrement habillée de lierre fascine et laisse rêveur.

Perchés sur le toit de l’hôtel, nous avons ainsi savouré une délicieuse cuisine gastronomique aux saveurs méditerranéennes et raffinées imaginée par le talentueux chef français Jean-François Daridon. La vue sur Rome est véritablement époustouflante, le charme de la Cité Éternelle opère… Le personnel est courtois, chaleureux et parle français, petit plus non négligeable. Une jolie table pour un diner romantique inoubliable.

Ce que nous avons adoré

- Déambuler dans les étroites ruelles du centre historique : à chaque coin de rue, l’émerveillement ne cesse de surprendre. La restauration des quartiers a été admirablement bien faite, le charme reste intact.

- Déguster une crème glacée en flânant à l’ombre de ces ruelles : la meilleure que nous ayons mangée reste celle de la gelateria San Crispino ou Ara Coeli qui propose des glaces à base de produits bios.

- Monter tout en haut du Vittoriano (édifice massif de marbre blanc au pied du Capitole) en empruntant l’ascenseur de verre : certes le prix est scandaleusement exorbitant, mais la vue est absolument splendide et fait oublier ce désagrément.

- Plonger dans l’histoire de Rome en visitant ses monuments emblématiques que sont le Forum Romain, le Colisée, le Capitole ou le Panthéon ; ses places (Navona, Trevi, Pietra, Spagna…) et ses très nombreuses églises.

- Pour les amateurs de la Rome antique, ne surtout pas passer à coté de la Basilica San Clemente située à quelques pas du Colisée. La visite est captivante et donne l’occasion de se plonger dans les différentes périodes de l’histoire romaine : elle est en effet bâtie sur une église du IVè siècle, elle-même construite sur un temple païen du IIè siècle et sur une maison romaine du Ier siècle. Le tout repose sur les fondations d’une demeure qui daterait de la République.

- Visiter la capitale du monde catholique : la Cité du Vatican s’impose avec son impressionnante basilique St Pierre et sa coupole magistrale sur une place aux proportions gigantesques. La Chapelle Sixtine est l’aboutissement d’un long périple au cœur de somptueux bâtiments ornés de nombreuses œuvres d’art. Seul regret : ne pas avoir pu visiter les jardins (à réserver avant de partir).

- Déjeuner à la brasserie Pane, Vino e San Daniele : découvert au détour d’une ruelle, ce bar à vin sert du San Daniele, un jambon cru très recherché du nord de l’Italie… à se damner ! Une adresse idéale pour boire un verre accompagné d’un repas léger.

- Siroter un cocktail dans le jardin intérieur du sublime hôtel de Russie.

- Boire un verre au bar Salotto 42 : un lounge bar intime surplombant les colonnes d’un temple datant de 145 av. J.-C. Il s’emplit d’une foule tendance à l’heure de l’apéritif qui profite également de la ravissante Piazza di Pietra.

- Savourer une bonne pizza dans une des nombreuses trattoria de la ville.

- Flâner dans le pittoresque quartier du Trastevere et s’arrêter boire un grand verre de jus d’orange sanguine sur la Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere. A la tombée du jour, le quartier s’éveille et bourdonne d’animation jusque tard dans la nuit.

Well, I’m back.

In my last post I said I would post some more pictures of Santa Maria in Ara Coeli. The Church does not look like much from the street 124 steps below its porch. Inside, however, is a different story. There is plenty of interest, especially for a Franciscan, the Church being the medieval generalate house for the Order. Our focus here, though, is the Battle of Lepanto.

The Senate and the Roman People

On the return of Mark Anthony Colonna, Admiral of the Pontifical Fleet, in thanksgiving with the support and thanks of every social order, the reception committee decorated this edifice with the golden paneled ceiling and with the standards of the enemy

Interestingly enough, there is no reference to Don John of Austria. Mark Anthony Colonna was the admiral in command of the papal fleet, which constituted only part, and not the largest part of the Holy League; however, it is only right that he would have been honored in Rome. The central panel for the whole of “the golden paneled ceiling” is this medallion of Our Lady, which I would guess measures 30-40 feet in length:

In my last post, I guessed that at least some of the military decoration represented the Christian side of the battle. According to the inscription that is not the case. According to the great Roman tradition, the Victor, or in this case, Victrix is surrounded by trinkets from the enemy. Here is an Ottoman galley:

Pretty cool decoration. I may adopt some of it for this blog.

BTW, Santa Maria in Ara Coeli means St. Mary of the Altar of Heaven. The Church is built over the shrine fo Juno Moneta, who is the patron goddess of Rome. Tradition has it that Caesar Augustus received the prophesy of the Tiburtine Sibyl concerning the coming of the true Christ.

According to this legend, the Emperor Augustus, disturbed by rumors that the Senate was about to honor him as a God, consulted the Tiburtine Sibyl, who prophesied the descent from the skies of “the King of the ages.” As she spoke, the Emperor beheld a marvelous vision – the Virgin standing on an altar in a dazzling light and holding the baby Jesus in her arms – and heard a voice which said: “This is the altar of the Son of God.” Of course, the Emperor immediately raised an altar on the site, the Ara Coeli, or altar of the heavens.

Later that altar became the location for a Christian Church to honor the Blessed Virgin, and still later a place to honor Her for Her protection of Christendom and the winning of a great battle:

Non arma, non vires, non duces, sed unice Regina sacratissimi Rosarii fecit nos victores.

Not arms, nor men, nor commanders, but the Queen of the Most Holy Rosary alone made us victors.

Yesterday the said Fra Giles and I went into Rome and visited a few churches. We also ate lunch at Santa Maria Maggiore with the friars there. Fra Giles was asking about everyone in America. He says hello to the locals.

One of the churches we visited yesterday was Santa Maria in Ara Coeli (Saint Mary of the Altar of Heaven), which an ancient church built on one of the tallest hills in Rome over the ruins of the Roman temple of Juno Moneta. I will more into the history of the Church in the next post. My main interest in this Church, which I had never visited before, is two: 1) It is the ancient Roman headquarters for the Franciscans; 2) It contains a huge memorial of the Battle of Lepanto.

In 1571, Santa Maria in Aracoeli hosted the celebrations honoring Marcantonio Colonna after the victorious Battle of Lepanto over the Turkish fleet. Marking this occasion, the compartmented ceiling was gilded and painted (finished 1575), to thank the Blessed Virgin for the victory.
