This rant from Fake Steve Jobs is on a topic that doesn’t really interest me in general, but there are a couple of parts that do:

Used to be, we were innovators. We were leaders. We were builders. We were engineers. We were the best and brightest. We were the kind of guys who, if they were running the biggest mobile network in the U.S., would say it’s not enough to be the biggest, we also want to be the best, and once they got to be the best, they’d say, How can we get even better? . . . But then something happened. . . .

And not just you. Look at Big Three automakers. Same deal. Lazy, fat, slow, stupid, from the top to the bottom — everyone focused on just getting what they can in the short run . . . . finding ways to leech out whatever bit of money they could get in the short run and let the future be damned. It was all just one big swindle, and the only kind of engineering that matters anymore is financial engineering. . . .

Now there was silence again. This time I was the one not talking. There was this weird lump in my throat, this tightness in my chest. I had this vision of the future — a ruined empire, run by number crunchers, squalid and stupid and puffed up with phony patriotism, settling for a long slow decline.

This can be read a couple of different ways, but here’s one interpretation:  Health insurers are the number crunchers and the US healthcare system is the ruined empire.

And no, for the hundredth time, no act of Congress is going to correct it. Their incompetence, phony altruism, and corruption guarantee that the best we can hope for is the temporary disruption of the health insurance industry and possibly some new initiatives from large employers.

I heard yesterday that my application to visit Arché at St Andrews has been accepted. I’ll be going there for the summer term next (calendar) year. Very exciting stuff – there’s some very interesting things happening there at the moment.

Completely unrelated, but nonetheless also cool, is this video:

If only it had existed when I was teaching this stuff earlier in the term.

On my daily walks I came across the most amazing and beautiful garden. Plants I had never seen before, enormeous old old trees, wild and overgrown like a djungel. I always stopped and admired this wild garden which seemed to be from another time and pictured myself living there, even it was quite dark and shady. I LOVED this garden.

But one day, the garden was gone. Someone had slaughtered it and left an ugly empty, dead spot with masses of dead tree trunks lying around. I was shocked. My heart almost stopped. How could anyone do this?
I changed my walks in order not to break out in tears every time I pass this house.

The other day I met a lovely lady who turned out to be the neighbour of the “arch” this was the name of the house. She was as upset as I was and told me the story about the garden. She knew the owner 20 years ago, he was already an old man. This garden was his life work. He collected plants and seeds from all over the world of all plants which were mentioned in the bible. He said, he would never leave his garden.
He was very active and still in his eighties he cycled from Standford to Hermanus and back (more than 20kms). But the traffic  increased and his hearing decreased and so he got killed on this road.
A couple bought his house and used it as a holiday home for many years until they moved to Begium and sold the house to a plastic surgeon from Belville who wanted the place to look more like the security village he lived in.

Lexie, the neighbour told me, she lived in the “ark” for a short time and a ghost had appeared to her often. Even a friend who visited her once confirmed the appearance. She said it looked like a pale  light in the shape of a man.

Seeing what they did to his garden, must have broken the heart of the old man, if he still had a heart. But maybe he is finally able to leave this place and move on, since his garden doesn’t exist anymore.

Mein Lieblingsgrundstück war das. Es liegt an der floodplane, in Flußnähe. Ein dichtumwucherter Garten, mit meterhohen alten Bäumen, Palmen, Aloen. Ein botanischer Garten, wie aus einer anderen Zeit. Das Haus heißt die Arche. Es ist nichts besonderes,  aber dieser Garten, ein Zaubergarten. Ich blieb jedesmal stehen und bewunderte ihn lange und nannte ihn meinen Garten. Ich sah nie Leute dort und immer blinkte das blaue Lämplein der Alarmanlage, das signalisierte: niemand Zuhause. Ich träumte mich in diesen Garten und machte Pläne für ein Leben in diesem Haus, auch wenn es ein wenig zu dunkel war.

Dann eines Tages war der Garten weg. Abgerodet, abgeschlagen, Berge von abgesägten jahrhundertealten Baumstämmen lagen herum. Ein kahler, grosser hässlicher Fleck. Das Haus stand in der Sonne. Ich stand unter Schock. Jemand hatte meinen Garten ausgerissen, abgetötet. Fassungslos, wer so etwas tun konnte. Ich wählte einen anderen Spaziergang um nicht jedesmal in Tränen ausbrechen zu müssen, wenn ich daran vorbei kam.

Neulich traf ich eine Frau, die sich als Nachbarin der Arche herausstellte. Sie  erzählte mir die Geschichte der Arche. Ein alter Mann war der frühere Besitzer. Er hatte Samen aus aller Welt zusammengesammelt von allen Pflanzen, die in der Bibel erwähnt wurden und daraus diesen Garten gepflanzt. Er war sein Lebenswerk, und er sagte, dass er diesen Garten nie verlassen werde. Das Haus hatte er aus Fundstücken selbst gebaut. Er war ein Klavierbauer. Noch im hohen Alter von über 80 Jahren fuhr er die Strecke Stanford Hermanus (über 20km) mit dem Fahrrad. Weil diese Landstrasse mit den Jahren immer mehr befahren wurde und er nicht mehr besonders gut hörte, wurde er eines Tages von einem Laser überrollt. Nach seinem Tod kaufte ein Ehepaar das Haus, sie benutzten es viele Jahre nur als Ferienhaus, bis sie nach Belgien zogen und der neue Besitzer, ein Schönheitchirurg aus Belville, den Garten niedermetzelte.

Die Nachbarin erzählte, dass sie nach dem Tod des alten Mannes für kurze Zeit in seinem Haus gelebt hatte und seinen Geist erschien oft in der Nacht. Ein Freund, der zu Besuch war und in einem anderen Zimmer schlief, bestätigte die Erscheinung. Ein fahles Licht in Form einer menschlichen Gestalt.

Es muss ihm das Herz gebrochen haben, zu sehen, was mit seinem Garten angestellt wurde, falls ein Geist ein Herz hat. Aber wer weiß, vielleicht kann er ja endlich in Ruhe gehen, jetzt da es seinen Garten nicht mehr gibt.

The current controversies in the US concerning evolution, atheism, and climate change share a common trait:  most participants on “both” sides consider the most significant aspect of the controversies to be public opinion. They become agitated and energized when public opinion seems to run counter to theirs; they become triumphant and energized when public opinion seems to agree with theirs. Their efforts at discourse consist of various methods for acquiring and maintaining the agreement of an amorphous majority of voting-age, working, non-institutionalized adult citizens. In other words, they are playing a political game.

The problem is that, although democracy may be a very stable form of government, its political process has nothing to do with truth. It doesn’t require truth, it frequently ignores truth, and it doesn’t produce truth. The best you can say about a rhetorical position that is favored by a majority of people in a pluralistic society is that it can be made palatable to a large number of people, and those who promote it know how to make it palatable. Being palatable for the majority simply means that you can get 51 people out of 100 to swallow it and ask for more at least once. Maybe their other choice was nasty looking; maybe it had a boring package or name; maybe the presenter of the preferred option was cute and winked at everyone; maybe everyone was paid off, and a slim majority said they would return the favor the next time they had to choose. Who knows? Why should I care?

The reasons for democratic popularity have almost nothing to do with any underlying notion of “Truth.” The exception occurs when the truth of a proposition is dependent on its popularity, but even then the only truth may be that a majority of people in your sample are ignorant, apathetic, impulsive, or easily deceived.

So, given the problems with appeals to popularity, I get suspicious whenever anyone makes a claim that a particular position is accepted by a majority of people, or when they say that it is becoming more accepted, that it needs to become more accepted, or that it is a tragedy that more people don’t accept it. That is a sign that the person making the claim has a weak mind or a weak position, and that the only “truth” they care about is whether they can get a majority of people to swallow something the next time.

Wir waren spazieren, und siehe da, die Sonne kam heraus. Es geht mir oft so, dass ich die Sonne hervorlocke, dabei will ich das gar nicht. Es ist grau, kalt, windig und nieselt und ich denke, oh fein, genau das richtige Wetter für einen Spaziergang, aber kaum bin ich unterwegs, kommt die Sonne raus und scheint mir auf den Kopf. Natürlich hatte ich keine Sonnenbrille dabei.

Wir gingen am Neckar entlang, auf dem Damm, und beim Ruderclub lief irgendeine große Sache. Da waren jedenfalls jede Menge Menschen an Land und Boote im Wasser.  Während wir oben entlanggingen, fuhren öfter Leute auf Fahrrädern an uns vorbei, die aus vollem Hals nach unten aufs Wasser brüllten, wo die Ruderer ruderten. Ich bezweifle ja, dass die da unten wirklich verstanden haben, was die da oben brüllten, das ist nämlich noch ein ganz schönes Stück. Und außerdem war heute offenbar Jogger-Sonntag, wir hätten sie zählen sollen, da waren Hunderte.

Am Morgen waren wir wieder in Speyer im Gottesdienst. Es ist wirklich schön in der Arche Gemeinde, ich glaube, damit können wir ganz gut leben. Die Musik ist gut und die Predigten aussagekräftig, wir werden immer nett begrüßt und mein Mann macht schon gleich Musik mit einer Band. Der Pastor kam am Dienstag zu meiner Lesung und das fand ich ganz besonders aufmerksam, freundlich und rührend.

Mental bereite ich mich darauf vor, morgen mit dem Jahresbackmarathon zu beginnen. Es fehlt mir nur noch mein persönlicher Butterberg zum Glück. Ich habe zusammengerechnet, wie viel ich brauchen werde, wenn ich alles backe, wie vorgenommen: 2.175 Gramm (so ungefähr, jedenfalls deutlich über 2 kg). Das ist doch Wahnsinn! Das werden wir also bis zum Ende der Weihnachtszeit (zusammen mit ein paar Freunden und Familienmitgliedern vielleicht) vermischt mit einem Berg Zucker und einem weiteren Berg Eiern verdrückt haben.

Gestern war ich mit meiner Stiefmutter auf einem kleinen Adventsmarkt in einem Ladenburger Kindergarten, wo es wirklich schöne Adventskränze, Gestecke u.a. gibt. Als wir mit einem Kranz für meinen Mann und mich auf dem Heimweg waren, hielt uns einen wildfremde ältere Frau an und wollte wissen, was wir dafür bezahlt hätten. Ich sagte es ihr, woraufhin sie uns belehrte, dass es doch viiiiiel billigere Kränze bei einer dieser Billig-Supermarktketten gäbe, wo sie sich am Morgen einen gekauft hätte. Sachen gibt’s!

Dieses Jahr haben wir übrigens weiße Kerzen auf dem Kranz und ich muss auch dauernd dran denken, dass ich noch den Adventskalenderkrimi zu schreiben habe. Ja, die nächste Woche wird ganz schön weihnachtlich busy. Aber ich freu mich drauf. Jetzt fehlt zur Einstimmung nur noch ein bisschen Schnee oder wenigstens Raureif.

Curse – Kein Leben

Es ist selten passiert, dass ich nach der ersten Zeile eines Curse Songs einen so starken Drang verspüre schreiend zu skippen. Curse, kennt ihr ihn? Curse ist eine Instanz im deutschen HipHop, Curse ist der Papst des deutschen Raps. Ich erinner mich lebhaft daran, als ich beim Headbangen auf “Hassliebe” zu meinen ersten Gigs gefahren bin, und als ich dann wieder auf Hassliebe abgehend in Bayreuth nen hübschen Unfall gebaut hab. Glück gehabt. Curse jedenfalls hat uns leuchtend-augen Kinder des deutschen Raps geführt, wir haben seine prägnanten Gedanken bewundert.

“Und was ist jetzt?“
Der Song “Kein Leben”. Released wird selbiger im Zuge eines “Joint Ventures” von der ARCHE-Stiftung und verschiedenen HipHop Künstlern, darunter Curse, Prinz Pi und auch Urgestein Spax; “Deutschlands vergessene<n> Kinder<n>” soll mit diesem Sampler ihre “emotionale Armut” genommen werden. Curse – Kein Leben

Abgesehen von der mangelnden Eleganz der Sprache, eine konzise Beschreibung der Situation “emotional verwahrloster Kinder”. Beschrieben von einem Verstand, der trotz seiner scheinbaren Klarheit nicht bemerkt, wie er stereotypisiert und stigmatisiert, wie er sich Klischees bedient und die prekären Lebensumstände von einer Empore aus mit dem Zeigefinger skizziert. Ich bin verleitet das eine himmelschreiende Heuchelei zu nennen.

Die “Depression aus der Dose” – ein unkontrolliert wuchernder Topos eines jeden deutschen Rappers, der etwas auf sich hält. Von Rasierklingenliebe (Casper) über Poesie von “depressiven Streetgangmembers” (Kollegah) wird die deutsche Amateurlyrik dunkelschwarz. Und auch Curse wusste angeblich schon in seinem Song “Struggle” ganz genau, was Jugendliche dazu antreibt aus einem Plastikkuli Pot zu rauchen.

Während Casper sein “Emo-Pony” legitimiert (Kidding) und Kollegah ohnehin nur Spaß macht, bleiben wir aber wieder bei Rappapst Curse, der es scheinbar bitter ernst meint und immernoch glaubt, dass er einen Zugang zu der Zielgruppe hätte, die er zu erreichen sucht. Nein, ich nehme keine Widerrede an, keine Diskussion.

Wenn ich in meinem verdunkelten Zimmer sitze, und den Schritt in die Treibsandgrube, die Spirale, den Strudel oder sonst irgendeine von Denkern erfundene Metapher für die Depression, getan habe, zieht mich da kein Curse raus. Denn was seine Songs kommunizieren sind Kälte, Eiseskälte. Eine sichere Distanz, ein schneidender Verstand, ein starres, apollinisches Konstrukt eines Gehirnes ohne jegliche Herzbeteiligung. Wie will mich so ein Mensch verstehen ?

Hand auf’s Herz – diese Tendenz zeichnet sich schon deutlich seit Sinnflut ab. Der tiefe Schrei auf dem Feuerwassercover ist längst verstummt. Was bleibt ist eine stoische Gestalt mit erhobenem Zeigefinger.
Curse hatte immer schon Oberlehrerambitionen mit Leidenschaft. Doch letztere Komponente verfliegt und hinterlässt einen schalen Beigeschmack von Ignoranz als er seine imaginäre Borderlinerin die letzten Worten “… was stand in dem Abschiedsbrief, wie du hast mich krass geliebt?” entgegenplärrt.
Nach so einer Vorstellung frage ich mich tatsächlich, ob Curse nicht mindestens genauso gefühlsverarmt ist wie die intendierten Hörer.

Ich für meinen Teil bin traurig darüber; zumal die große Aktion gegen die “emotionale Armut” aufgrund ihrer schon lächerlich unklaren Zielerklärung nach außen nicht mehr darstellt, als einen bravotauglichen Versuch der Reinwaschung im Rahmen der “social correctness”:  “Die Kids nehmen Rap-Texte sehr genau wahr und leben diese dann nach. Dazu gehören härteste Alkoholexzesse genauso wie mitgefilmte Gangbang-Partys, die dann über Handys weiter verteilt werden.” (<a href=”http://rapspot.de/interview.php?id=94″> Rapspot Interview, zweite Frage</a>.
Jedes gut gemeinte Motiv in Ehren, solche verbalen Emissionen sind weltfremd, anmaßend und widersprüchlich, hat man sich doch in jeder “Deutschrap Podiumsdiskussion über den Aufstieg und den Niedergang des deutschen HipHop” darauf geeinigt, dass kein Raptext Kinder zum Mord und Exzess bringen kann, deren junge und unstete Persönlichkeiten nicht vorher durch schlimme Erlebnisse geschwächt worden sind.

Ich für meinen Teil werde mir den Sampler trotzdem anhören, denn vielleicht ist trotz allen schlechten Vorboten ein Künstler vertreten, der sich nicht eine artifizielle Geschichte aus den Fingern saugt, sondern einfach das rappt was er am besten kann. Für einen “guten Zweck”. Und wenn er Müttern beischläft.

Die jugendpolitischen SprecherInnen der Fraktionen in der Bezirksverordnetenversammlung Marzahn-Hellersdorf von Berlin, Konrad Fonfara (SPD), Ilka Maikowski (CDU), Christian Fender (Bündnis90/Die Grünen) und Bjoern Tielebein (DIE LINKE), erklären:

Der Jugendhilfeausschuss hat am 11. November 2009 über die Zuwendungen zur Förderung von Projekten Freier Träger der Jugendhilfe für das Jahr 2010 entschieden.
Dem waren mehrfache Beratungen der AG-Zuwendungen des Ausschusses, dem VertreterInnen aller Fraktionen und unbefangene BürgerInnendeputierte angehören, über den Vorschlag des Jugendamtes
vorausgegangen.
Dieser war aus Sicht aller Fraktionen eine sehr gute Grundlage der anschließenden Beratungen. Wir danken den MitarbeiterInnen des Jugendamtes sehr herzlich für die sehr gute Zusammenarbeit. Diese Verlief zwischen allen Beteiligten äußerst fachlich und solidarisch im Sinne einer vielfältigen und zwischen den Regionen ausgewogenen Kinder- und Jugendarbeit im Bezirk.
Den zur Verfügung stehenden Mitteln in Höhe von 952.000,- € standen Projektanträge von insgesamt mehr als 2,8 Millionen € gegenüber.
Bereits zu den Haushaltsberatungen hatte sich der Jugendhilfeausschuss geeinigt, die Zuwendungen für die Projekte der Familienhilfe in den Stadtteilen im Doppelhaushalt 2010/2011 gesondert einzustellen. Hierdurch soll die kontinuierliche und vertiefende Arbeit der Projekte gesichert werden. Die 2009 geförderten Familienzentren werden auch im Jahr 2010 ihre Arbeit fortsetzen können. Die Fraktionen haben sich gemeinsam mit den BürgerInnendeputierten darauf verständigt, im kommenden Jahr das Projekt „Neue Wege für Jungs“ in die Förderung aufzunehmen. Wir wollen damit einen
Schwerpunkt bei der geschlechterdifferenzierten Jugendarbeit setzen und einer zusätzlichen Problemstellung in diesem Bereich Rechnung tragen. Ziel des Projektes ist es, zum Teil tradierte Rollenbilder bei Jungen und jungen Männern in Frage zu stellen und diesen mit neuen Perspektiven, im Besonderen auch in der Berufsplanung durch Praktika, entgegen zu wirken.
Auch im Jahr 2010 werden die drei Streetworkprojekte in gleicher Höhe weiter gefördert. Ebenso erhält das Projekt „Zirkus Cabuwazi“ auch im nächsten Jahr eine Förderung. Um eine Vielfältige Partizipationsarbeit für Kinder und Jugendliche im Bezirk zu stützen, werden auch im kommenden Jahr beide Projekte, das Kinder- und Jugendbüro und WEP, durch das Jugendamt mit einer Zuwendung bedacht. Wir wollen damit das hohe Niveau der jetzigen Arbeit in Marzahn-Hellersdorf auch weiterhin gewährleisten.
Wir haben uns gemeinsam darauf verständigt, die ursprüngliche Anschubfinanzierung des „Cafe Wandelbar“ in Kaulsdorf auch im nächsten Zuwendungszeitraum fortzusetzen. Dieses Projekt konnte durch die Förderung der letzten zwei Jahre in seiner Arbeit zusätzlich gestärkt werden und soll auch weiterhin mit einer geminderten Förderung sein Fundament sichern können.
In de Region Hellersdorf-Ost/Mahlsdorf wollen wir 2010 die Arbeit der „Naturschutzstation Schleipfuhl“ verstärkt unterstützen. Die wichtige Umweltbildung für Kinder und Jugendliche aus dem Kiez und immer
häufiger ganzen Schulklassen muss auf stärkere Füße gestellt werden.
Ebenso möchten wir in dieser Region das SchülerInnenzentrum „Kraftwerk“ intensiver fördern als im vergangen Jahr. Das offene Haus des Verbund e.V., in dem auch das SchülerInnenzentrum angesiedelt ist, ist nicht nur Anlaufpunkt für viele Kinder und Jugendliche aus den dortigen Stadtteilen, sondern leistet durch sein vielfältiges soziales Engagement auch einen wichtigen Beitrag zur Familien- und Sozialarbeit im Kiez.

Die jugendpolitischen SprecherInnen stellen fest, dass die Zuwendungsbeschlüsse für das Jahr 2010 sowohl der fachlichen Schwerpunktsetzung der Förderungskriterien als auch den sich verändernden Realitäten im Bezirk Rechnung tragen. Wir haben die kontinuierliche Arbeit der Projekte gesichert und trotz der knappen Mittel neue Akzente setzen können.
Dennoch wollen wir auch in diesem Jahr ausdrücklich unterstreichen, dass die zur Verfügung stehenden Mittel für die präventive Arbeit im Kinder- und Jugendbereich nicht ausreichen, um dem Bedarf entsprechend Projekte zu fördern.
Der Bezirk muss dringend eine Debatte darüber anstrengen, wie diesem Zustand entgegen gewirkt werden
kann. Die Stärkung der sozialen Arbeit für Kinder und Jugendliche, um diesen gegenüber neue Perspektiven aufzuzeigen und Unterstützung zu leisten, darf nicht nur als „freiwillige Aufgabe“ betrachtet werden. Der
gesamte Bezirk ist gefordert, sich dieser Situation zu stellen.

Moinmoin, hoywoy und salam alaikum, werte Männchen, Weibchen und Zwitterchen, Genossen und Volksbrüder, Vollpfosten und Maniker zur neuesten Ausgabe von A.e.B.(&vK.)m.tO., unserem Wort zum Montag, diesmal zum Frühstück mit ohne Bier und dafür Kaffee (1 1/2 Liter um genau zu sein), mit noch mehr Kippen, Flausen im Kopf und einer müdigkeitsinduzierten Tippschwäche, die sich eventuell niederschlägt, falls das Eine dem Anderen obsiegt. Salve!
Die Kippe brennt, der Kaffe dampft und im ‘Radio’ laufen ‘Die (allmächtigen, weil heiliigheiligheiligen) Kassierer mit ‘Kommste mit ins Stadion’, der Kopf hängt im Gestern und rekapituliert das was war, als die Woche fortlief in den Casus Präteritum mit rasender Geschwindigkeit, viel Arbeit und der allgemeinen Trauerbegeisterung um einen endlich mal aufregenden Selbstmord und im allgemeinen wird wie immer alles anders sein, wenn dieser Text erstmal vorbei ist. Nach Michael Jackson, Jürgen Rieger haben wir nun mit Enke den dritten Großen Toten des Jahres und können entspannt darauf hoffen, daß wir vonnunan vom Argen Schnitter mit wichtigen, öffentlichkeitswirksamen Leichen verschont bleiben, weil ich keine doofen, weinenenden Weiber auf MoPo-Titelseiten mehr sehen kann – zum Glück habe ich wenigstens versäumt, die ganzen ekelhaft-heuchlerischen Texte zu studieren, die sich die emotionsunfähige ‘Journalisten’brut in der letzten Woche aus den Fingern gesogen hat und mich auf angenehmere Tätigkeiten wie Penisjogging und Kakophnieeurythmie beschränkt, die anderen berichtensunwerten Nachrichten gebannt verfolgt und meine geistige Kapazität mit Guiness und Mexikaner reduziert – was einen gar herrlichen Abend in eine vom Englischmann(&-frau) als ‘hilarious’ titulierte Nacht gedingste und einen witzigen zehnstundentag im Anschluss zu einem Erlebnis bar jedem Flokati machte und überhaupt……….und überhaupt.

Das Unser Aller Fröhlicher Glaubenskrieg im sozialen Bereich angekommen ist, verrät uns Telepolis und ließ mich am Montag, Dienstag oder so mutmaßen, ob ich das als Aufhänger für die dieszweiwöchentliche Ausgabe ebendieses Beitrages nutzen sollten könnte, aber ermüdet wie ich nun diesbezüglich bin, davon absehen und Euch, meine werten LeserInnnen, hiermit auffordern, sich Den Verlinkten Inhalt zu Gemüte zu führen, insbesondere, wenn Ihr gedenken solltet, dies Weihnachten das schlechte Gewissen mit einer Spende an die sogenannte Arche zu beruhigen. An dieser Stelle sei erstmal der Satzbau des gesamten heutigen Textes angeprangert, weil sie doof, falsch und kompliziert ist, doch Dada und damit Neu! wichtig und grün, was ihre Berechtigung tröt.
Die Sonne scheint, es ist schön und Herbst gleichzeitig, die Kinder johlen in den Straßen, die Eltern saufen heiße Orangensaftvodkamischungen aus Thermoskannen und dreh mir eine Zigerette, trinkn Schluck Kaffe, lausche dem Ska von Streetlight Manifesto und erfreue mich an meiner obsoleten Großhaftigkeit purer Genügsamkeit in Gemütlichkeit. Amen.

Das Böse und die Niedertracht sind kein Thema mehr, erst morgen, die Welt erscheint freundlich, unser kollektives Bewusstsein erinnert das Einreißen von Blöden Bauwerken ™ und die schleichende Gentrifizidididingsbums von Allem Wos Lebenswert is, bestärkt uns in unserem antikapitalistischem Hass auf diedaoben, was das schwelgem in ebenjenem mit zynischer Begeisterung vorantreibt, unser Blut in Wallung bringt und die lang verloren geglaubte Selbstgerechtigkeit zurückbringt, die man nur fastganzunten haben darf, weil alles andere der Feind ist und damit weggesprengt, verballhont und beblödet gehört – ein frommer Wunsch, dem Wir eventuell nachkommen werden, sobald das Wetter nochbesser geworden ist (Frühling), jetzt erstmal Winter, Kuscheln und mit eisigem Grinsen vorbereitent, den Krieg auf die Straßen zu bringen, MUAHAHAHAHAH!

Doch lasst uns einen Moment innehalten und den zahllosen Karstadts, Quelles und Opels gedenken, den Opfern weil zuschlecht der allgemeinen Krise, die uns erklärt wird um uns weiter in den Dreck zu treten, weil wir es sonst nicht akzeptieren würden, was wir aber tun, weil wir soviel Angst vor dem morgen, soviel Beschönigung des Gestern, soviel ochnöwarbesser des Heutes…dings. Neinneinnein, keine Aufregung, alles in Ordnung, bitte wenden, keine Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzung, einfach geradeaus dem Untergang entgegen, danke Emmerich. Ich rieche Menschenfleisch.

Warum nicht mal ne Torte?

Eigentlich ist doch egal was ich schreibe denn alles was ich zu schreiben habe sind allgemeine Bewertungen über das Leben das Universum und den ganzen Rest der nun eine Fortsetzung vom Colfer erfahren hat und fortan weitergesponnen wird als Geschichte die der Lebende schreibt nicht der Tote allerdings anders und doch gleich was so schön ist so kultiviert so unnachahmlich unbeschwert wie wir nur sein können wenn wir wissen wissen was uns umtreibt in diesem Meer aus Möglichkieten die wir nicht nutzen weil uns die Angst die Hoffnung nimmt das es auch anders geht odedr wir lieber die Führung suchen die Niemand brauchen würde würden wir nur einmal versuchen miteinander umzukommen ohne in Vorurteilen zu schwelgen ohne Neid das Unsrige einfordern wär eine Möglichkeit einfach wir sein ohne Konzept Religionen Stolz. Einfach sein. Hach Hippie Crap[HHC(tm)].

Es gibt immer was, was man lesen kann, immer was, was man schreiben kann, immer was, was man lassen sollte oder auch nicht. Damit ist eigentlich alles gesagt.

Oder wäre es, wäre da nicht dieses beißende Gefühl im Nacken; dieser Zweifel aus dem Off; dieses flaue Gefühl in der Magengegend; manchmal glaube ich daran das alles anders werden kann (Dritte Wahl, danke), es ist gleich zwei, was sich nicht in der Uhrzeit unter dem Titel des Beitrags niederschlagen wiord, da ich in einer anderen Zeitzone veröffentlich als ich existiere, was ich wirklich bemerkenswert finde; und irgendwie passend.
Doch genug der geistigen Hautirritation! Lasst uns in die nächsten zwei Wochen hinabschweben, bis es weitergeht. Das nächste Mal wird es einen Beitrag ‘post-M.A.Numminen-*Lesung*’geben und daruf freue ich mich schon.

I’ve been back in St Andrews this last week to attend the Arché/CSMN graduate conference and an Arché workshop on expressivism. As I was helping to organise the conference I found the weekend busy and slightly stressful. I think it all went off without too many problems in the end and I think most of the people were pleased most of the time. The keynote speakers were Ernie Lepore from Rutgers and Susanna Siegel from Harvard. From my point of view Lepore’s talk was one of the more interesting. He made some remarks about the correct Davidsonian response to arguments from Scott Soames and others. He also pressed Davidson’s so-called Third Man argument as an objection against structured propositions as semantic values. I have a few vague thoughts on why a view that incorporates syntactic information into such structures can answer such objections. I might even write a post about it soon.

The expressivism workshop was extremely interesting. There is a lot to be gained by thinking about how an expressivist semantics should go. I think many people naturally think in terms of something like truth-conditions as the compositional semantic values of declarative sentences in context. But there are other options if we care to exploit them. We had talks from:

I think that a lot of people are going to be looking at Schroeder’s Being For after his excellent series of talks.

It is unclear what might have motivated Major Hasan, who is suspected of killing 13 people. Senior military and law enforcement officials said they had tentatively dismissed the possibility that he was carrying out a terrorist plot. He seems to have been influenced by a mixture of political, religious and psychological factors, the officials said.

Muslim leaders, advocates and military service members have taken pains to denounce the shooting and distance themselves from Major Hasan. They make the point that his violence is no more representative of them than it is of other groups to which he belongs, including Army psychiatrists.

“I don’t understand why the Muslim-American community has to take responsibility for him,” said Ingrid Mattson, the president of the Islamic Society of North America. “The Army has had at least as much time and opportunity to form and shape this person as the Muslim community.”

Complications Grow for Muslims Serving in U.S. Military

I agree that the fact of being a soldier and a psychiatrist are just as likely to have led to Hasan’s mental instability. However, that is no excuse for this:

Muslim military members have often felt criticized for their service, Muslim chaplains, military members, veterans advocates and others said in interviews. Some return exhausted and traumatized from their tours, only to hear at their local mosques that they will go to hell for “killing Muslims”….

This particular article tries to divert the reader’s attention by emphasizing the problem of possibly killing “innocents” or “civilians.” That is a completely invalid argument, since it is not a problem specific to the US military, nor is it only a concern for Moslems. Moreover, it is not a problem for Moslems serving in majority Moslem military forces such as the Taliban, Hamas, the Sadr brigades, Hezbollah, or anywhere else. The reporter who threw this in is an idiot.

Another article clarifies the actual problem, quoting an 18-year-old Moslem who knew Hasan:

“He felt he was supposed to quit,” Mr. Reasoner said. “In the Koran, it says you are not supposed to have alliances with Jews or Christians, and if you are killed in the military fighting against Muslims, you will go to hell.”

The bottom line is that there is actually no Moslem orthodoxy, and so some of them adopt an idealized orthodoxy that includes allegiance to an imaginary, invisible caliphate. If they don’t want to be on the “wrong” side of a religious war, they need to get over that.

A lot of Christians and Jews have similar ideas, except that most of them at this point in history are not willing to die for it. I’m referring to the various groups throughout history that have been willing to die for what they imagined to be a “kingdom of God on earth”:  the medieval crusaders; the soldiers who marched in wars of European conquest at the orders of various popes; the Fifth Monarchy Men and others during the English civil war; the soldiers of certain “holy” European empires, such as the Polish, German, and Russian; and the Zionists before the establishment of modern Israel.

The Christians and Jews who have idolized their political leaders under the pretense of fighting for the “kingdom of God on earth” are no different from the soldiers of the Ottoman empire, the soldiers of various Chinese and Japanese emperors who were worshipped as gods, the soldiers of Roman emperors who were worshipped as gods, or the soldiers of ancient American, Mesopotamian, African, or Asian cultures who worshipped their leaders as gods.

When the ignorant and hopeless atheists whine about religion, these are the miscreants they are talking about. They can’t help it, because all they care about is political power. Like the Fifth Monarchy Men, the Moslems, the Nazis, the communists, the eugenicists, the Dominionists, the Restorationists, the environmentalists, the climate-change nuts, and the One-Worlders, their only objective is to create a perfect environment on earth so that they can finally be happy. Naturally, a perfect social environment requires killing, enslaving, or controlling all the bad people who might spoil the perfection.

Previously, I noted how some Anglicans and Roman Catholics are moving even closer together, mostly due to their common political positions (Why Politics Matters). Likewise, there is evidence of evangelical Protestants and Mormons moving closer together:

[S]ince 2000, small scholarly teams of Mormons led by Millet and evangelical teams led by Fuller Theological Seminary president Richard Mouw have managed to hold 17 intense, closed-door dialogue sessions.

That sounds reasonable enough, as an effort to clarify how they stand on various issues. However, the article goes on to detail how Mouw believes Mormons might be changing to a more “Christian” theology. Furthermore:

One undoubted factor in the search for better relations is that evangelicals and Mormons today unite on various moral issues and feel on the defensive, especially in shared opposition to same-sex marriage.

So, again, a political alliance is leading to some feeling that doctrinal differences are insignificant. I first noted this trend in Tim LaHaye’s book Mind Siege, in which he proposes a political coalition among conservative Christians, Jews, and Moslems. Because, you know, they really all believe in the same thing, as the New Atheists also tell us. Isn’t it funny how both kinds of political animals agree that all conservative religious types are the same?

On the whole, I favor conservative political positions and I think discussion among different groups is good. I also think it’s polite to not ascribe bad motives to someone just because of a doctrinal or political disagreement. However, I think that these sorts of religious coalitions are a mistake. The first mistake is identifying religious beliefs with political causes, and that leads inevitably to dilution of doctrine.

I read in this article, “Rome goes fishing in Anglican pond“, that

The Roman Catholic Church was going to extraordinary lengths to make it easy for disenchanted Anglicans to convert to Catholicism.

They could join the Roman Catholic Church as full members, but hang on to many of their Anglican traditions and practices – and indeed preserve much of their “Anglican identity”.

I would say that there was never much distance between them, and this should elicit a big “ho-hum” from most US Protestants. That is confirmed here:

Since the Protestant Reformation, when the Church of England broke away from Rome, it has been a sometimes uneasy coalition between its Catholic and Protestant members.

Sorry about that whole “Protest” thing! They’re ready to kiss and make up. Nietzsche writes in The Antichrist that Luther saved the Roman Catholic Church by reforming it just when it was about to become fully pagan and, in his eyes, finally legitimate.

In a related article, “Faith Diary: Changing loyalties“, we find this:

In the United States, 10 nuns at an Anglican convent near Baltimore have taken the extraordinary step of converting to Roman Catholicism, citing the Episcopal Church’s liberal approach to homosexuality as a reason.

However, further on in the article we find this alarming news from the African missionaries to the pagan Americas:

The Anglican enclave planted in the United States by the Nigerian Church has accused the Episcopal Church of unintentionally encouraging conversions to Islam by moving away from a simple message and liturgy.

The Convocation of Anglicans in North America (Cana) cites research by bodies such as the Pew Institute to show that Islam is growing rapidly, and attracting Protestant women in particular.

It says they are marrying Muslim men partly because of the dearth of marriageable men in their own churches.

Cana says the women are attracted by “the apparent order and simplicity of the Islamic faith and its ability to successfully manipulate governments and public policy”.

Why would Protestant women be marrying Muslim men? Is it because they crave the old-fashioned order and simplicity of being legally subordinate to men?

This quotation goes behind and beneath the trite “culture wars” reporting to identify the crucial threat to American Protestantism:  “the apparent order and simplicity of the Islamic faith and its ability to successfully manipulate governments and public policy.” The Republican political animals are surely trembling now at the thought that their god, the federal government, might be stolen from them.

That is coincidentally confirmed by this article, “Republican men hormonally emasculated by US election“:

American neuroscientists say that men who voted for Republican candidate John McCain in the recent presidential elections suffered a serious loss of testosterone as a result of the Obama victory. The hormone, produced by one’s wedding-tackle, is considered essential for basic manliness….

Men who had voted for McCain – or the libertarian candidate Robert Barr – experienced a 28 per cent loss of testosterone almost as soon as the contest was over. LaBar notes that levels of testosterone, produced by both male and female gonads but in much larger amounts in men, are directly linked to important masculine behaviours such as “aggression, risk-taking and response to threats”.

Apparently the male GOP and Barr voters reported feelings of “unhappiness” and “submissiveness” following the crushing defeat of their chosen national leaders.

How can this be? What is going on in their tiny little brains? The study itself provides a possible answer:

The findings indicate that male voters exhibit biological responses to the realignment of a country’s dominance hierarchy as if they participated in an interpersonal dominance contest.

Finally, a resolution to the problem of why some people, at least, are so tied to political contests that actually have nothing to do with their personal lives. My faith in the stupidity of the crowd is confirmed.

Having a shop in an area where a lot of wealthy people with small kids live we thought, together with our shop-neighbours, that we should collect some money for an institution that cares about poor kids here in Berlin called Arche. How to motivate people to donate some money? Our solution was a tombola. Each shop donated some prices and we tinkered some lots for people to buy them for 2 EUR.

This quote is referring to Abigail’s mother, who had recently died. It challenges my prejudice against public service as inherently corrupting.

It also challenges the modern, secularist notion of how religion influences public life, since Adams thinks it means to benefit the general public with “Benevolence, Charity, Capacity and Industry.” That is generally known as a “Christian witness,” and was formerly expected to be true of anyone claiming to be a Christian. Quakers, in particular, became known in the 17th century for deliberately exemplifying such behavior in public life, which should indicate how rare it actually was at the time.

Nowadays, everyone is expected to be hypocritical and self-serving, cynically pursuing a narrow political agenda. That is precisely why I despise the belief that “everything is political” and “ideas have consequences.” Behavior has consequences, and ideas are merely the window-dressing that people choose for themselves.

Hercules Mulligan makes the argument here that America was founded as a Christian nation, and this is a recurring thesis among anyone interested in America’s founding fathers. However, he cites mainly John Jay and Alexander Hamilton for support, and otherwise refers to the historical background. Here is his summary:

Our Founding Fathers established a Christian nation – not the kind of Christian nation that was many of the Catholic nations in medieval Europe – but the Christian nation composed of a Christian majority, a nation that recognizes that our inalienable rights are given to us by God, and that it is the Bible that forms the basis of our fundamental laws. That is the Christian nation established by our Founders. It allows those of other religions to live here freely, and they are not persecuted for their beliefs; however, it is Christianity that was meant to shape our world-view as a nation, and others are simply allowed to live here freely and enjoy the benefits thereof.

This approach shows that America was mostly founded by Christians, that its founders assumed most of the citizens were Christians, and that its founders assumed that their understanding of Christian values were necessary for founding the kind of nation they envisioned. It also shows why this should be OK with Jews and Christians whose views were not explicitly represented, as well as those of other religions:  ”It certainly is very desirable that a pacific disposition should prevail among all nations. The most effectual way of producing it, is by extending the prevalence and influence of the gospel. REAL Christians will abstain from violating the rights of others, and therefore will not provoke war” (John Jay).

The problem is that from a legal and political standpoint, America’s founders did not “establish” a Christian nation. They did not dictate a particular set of beliefs or even require that anything about the nation be maintained as specifically “Christian.” They could have done this, but for some reason they did not. Personally, I think they were reacting to the 17th-century European religious wars and maybe also trying to win support from politically influential Jews, Freemasons, Deists, or Unitarians.

Now then, we can look back on that and say that all these things they said and did are obviously “Christian,” but they just didn’t spell it out. But is that the meaning of Christianity? Is a “Christian” anyone who acts like a Christian and talks like a Christian, who talks about God and about morality, but never goes to church, never talks about salvation through Jesus Christ, and doesn’t hold any particular set of beliefs as necessarily true? No, nowadays any Protestant Christian would call such a person a “New Ager” or a “seeker,” someone who thinks he is saved by works instead of by faith, or even a cultist, but not a “Christian.”

I just listened to a speech by a former politician who cited his reasons why he believed that America was founded as a Christian nation:  because the Declaration of Independence refers to a Creator, because numerous inscriptions and plaques in Washington DC dedicate things to God, because America’s founding documents imply Christian values, and because the legislative chambers feature a picture of Moses. However, the same argument could be used to show that America was founded as a Jewish nation, a Mormon nation, a Moslem nation, a Jehovah’s Witness nation, or a Branch Davidian nation. There is no specifically Christian witness, just a lot of references to an ambiguous Creator God and some morality derived from the Old Testament (“Judeo-Christian” values, not “Christian” values).

I don’t have a problem with this ambiguity, but there is no basis for claiming that it presents a Christian witness. Christianity comes from the people and from the local communities of people, not from the government. It is entirely possible that America is not sustainable as a free nation and a constitutional republic without a majority Christian population and the tacit acknowledgment by state and federal government of the importance of religion.

However, if the people of this country abandon their cultural heritage and religious traditions, there is no law, no judge, and no police force who should straighten them up ideologically in some kind of parody of 1555 England, 1642 England, 1794 France, 1979 Iran, or 2009 Saudi Arabia. There is no “Christian” version of brutal government oppression that I want to establish, and that would be the only possible reason for claiming the legal and political establishment of a “Christian nation.”

Durant ces deux premières semaines, j’ai eu l’occasion de me balader à la Défense (beaucoup) et à Paris même (un peu).

Qu’est-ce que j’y ai vu ?

La Défense :

• La grande Arche, incontournable, et difficilement “loupable” aussi. Beaucoup plus grande que ce que j’imaginais initialement. J’étais un peu déçu également de pas pouvoir monter en haut (trop cher pour ce que c’est, peut être pour les journées du patrimoine). Je pensais que c’était une bibliothèque mais apparemment non, ou alors je l’ai pas trouvée (!)
  

  La Défense dos à l'Arche

• Des tours de partout, toutes les plus imposantes les unes que les autres. Mes préférées, celles de la Société Générale et d’EDF. C’est très impressionnant d’être à leurs pieds la première fois. On s’y habitue très vite toutefois.
• L’esplanade de la Défense, très large, ouverte, colorée, dynamique : j’adore ! On y trouve également pas mal de boutiques et centres commerciaux. Le CNIL regroupe la Fnac et diverses boutiques de luxe (vêtements, Air France, Jean-Louis David = 27€ la coupe pour homme *tombe dans les pommes…*). Les 4 Temps est un énorme complexe ou l’on retrouve énormément de boutiques. Beaucoup plus grand que le Polygone de Montpellier,  deux fois plus grands que La Part Dieu à Lyon, je me suis souvent perdu dans le dédale des 4 étages de complexe !
• Sur la place enfin, on retrouve aussi quelques sculptures que je qualifierai de moderne. On aime, ou on n’aime pas…

Paris

Je n’ai pas fait grand chose. J’ai “seulement” fait la Défense – l’Arc de Triomphe – le Louvre à pied (soit environ 7km d’après Mappy), oui, oui ! Et bien je ne le referai plus…

• L’Arc de Triomphe : magnifiquement sculpté, je n’ai malheureusement pas eu le temps de m’y attarder. Avec un ami (Boris), nous sommes montés en haut (merci la gratuité des monuments au moins de 26 ans), didju je pensais pas que c’était si haut et que ce serait si crevant d’y monter ! Je vois d’ici les mauvaises langues arriver, oui je sais, c’est pas grand choses, mais je ne m’y attendais pas, et après avoir marché 4km j’étais déjà bien chaud au niveau de jambes… Sinon, et bien l’intérieur sympa, pas de quoi casser trois pattes à un canard, le pauvre. La vue au sommet est, par contre, magnifique. Un superbe 360° de Paris avec vue sur les Champs Élysées et le rond point  de l’Arc où circulent des malades en voiture et où quelques inconscients risquent parfois leur vie à tenter de traverser à pied (ah ah ils avaient pas vu le passage souterrain les noobs)

• Les Champs Elysées : à part dire que c’est une grande avenue avec des arbres de chaque côté, une circulation pas possible, un bruit assourdissant, énormément de piétons, et des boutiques de luxe (avec un concept car bien sympa chez Citroën au passage), et bien pas grand chose de plus à dire…
• Le Louvre et les Tuileries : j’adore ! Le parc est super reposant avec des chaises à libre dispo en plus des bancs. Très reposant, du monde mais sans plus, très agréable pour y passer une petite heure à décompresser, papoter, lire un bouquin ou même une petite sieste pour les plus fatigués. Le Louvre en lui-même, pas vraiment eu le temps de bien regarder, on s’est contenté de rester dehors vu l’heure tardive qu’il était. Donc à voir !
