Okay, who among us hasn’t been simultaneously attracted to/repulsed by a bad boy? Something about danger, wildness, and stepping away from the known is at once exciting, yet scary…which makes it even more exciting. Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick (Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers) is indeed about the proverbial bad boy. So what do you do when that gorgeous, edgy guy you are falling for, turns out to be a fallen angel? Hm. Not exactly meet the parents material. But excellent material for a YA novel, and this one kept me up most of the night as I eagerly flipped the pages to find out what would happen next to Nora and that dark-eyed mysterious guy, Patch.

What originally attracted me to this novel was the stunning cover, designed by Lucy Ruth Cummins, and featuring a photo by James Porto. It conveys the dark mood, and an appealing vulnerability. Bravo! The other thing that pulled me in was the theme of the supernatural lover. I’m trying to keep up with these novels because my own recently completed young adult novel, titled Drawn, is about a teen artist who starts channeling one very attractive and mysterious ghost through her drawings. Is he the love of her life, or is she losing her mind? Drawn is under consideration at publishers right now.

Some folks might at first glance think Hush, Hush as just another twist on the Twilight theme. But I assure you that Hush, Hush stands on its own, and is a fresh and original read. Now that’s not to say there aren’t some similarities. Even though there are no vampires or werewolves, there are plenty of supernatural creatures infiltrated into a normal high school. The location is a gloomy isolated town (in Maine, the opposite side of the map from Washington state, but similar in some ways). Nora lives in a one parent home, and that parent is mostly clueless or away, which is also similar to Twilight.

But you know what? These qualities weren’t invented by Stephanie Meyer’s either. Go back to the Gothic novel, and you will find all the tales set in isolated locations and/or gloomy settings. Storms, clouds, dense woods. Par for the course, reflecting the story’s mood. And what about the lone, clueless parent? This is a story motif that goes way back to oral tradition. How about the father in Cinderella? And all those evil stepmothers? Weren’t they a dysfunctional bunch? They enabled, and often forced the heroes and heroines in folk tales and fairy tales to strike out on their own and face hardships and adventures. To quest. This symbolized youth leaving their families, turning their backs on childhood, and facing adulthood.

Well, what about this whole fad surrounding supernatural loves? Not exactly a fad. Of course there was Dracula, but long before that there were countless folktales told for centuries that involved a supernatural lover or husband. The lover was often dangerous, mysterious, at times he took the form of an animal or a monster. Sometimes he was cursed, as in Beauty and the Beast or The Frog Prince, and sometimes the lover was a descended demigod. Take the story of Cupid and Psyche from mythology. In one version of this tale, Psyche had a beautiful young man come to her bed every night. He would be hers forever, as long as she never lit the light and looked at him. Of course she is curious and finally must know more about him. When she lights the candle, she sees Cupid’s wings, and he is forced to leave her. Varieties of this tale have been told for centuries throughout Europe, in the Near East and India. Even the Zuni of New Mexico told a variety of this story.

Cupid (like Patch and like Edward Cullen) is secretive, mysterious, his sexuality is dangerous, and the heroine is literally “kept in the dark” until she simply must know the truth. So the new crop of supernatural lover stories are not really a “trend” but a revived archetype – something rooted deep in our lore that speaks to young women as they leave the comfort of their homes and their childhood and dare to explore the dangers of love and independence.

Archetypes aside, there are some further similarities to Twilight. Patch’s unusual dark eyes. His secretive life. Nora and Patch meet as Biology class partners. I personally would have picked another class for them to meet in, but Biology, specifically the human sexuality unit they are doing, definitely works. There is a huge showdown in the gym that echoes Meyer’s climactic scene in the ballet studio, and the heroine is lured there because a loved one (this time a friend) is in danger.

But similarities aside, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. There was plenty of tension and chemistry (as well as biology) between Nora and Patch. Lots of mind games and mysterious happenings heightened the drama and danger. And Nora is a much more appealing heroine than Bella, which makes the reader worry about her more and root harder for her to survive and thrive. Can a girl with a mysterious birthmark and a pesky iron deficiency fight the evil of the ages? Can a fallen angel, shrouded in darkness and sin rise from his long and horrible past, and truly love? Can you resist staying up all night to find out how it all turns out?

Grab this book and start reading. It’s endlessly entertaining…and you can always catch up on your sleep later.

Kenotyyppi, ”uuskuva” (new form) on uudempi taiteentutkimuksen käsite.

Serranon perhe -sarjan hahmojen asunnot on sisustettu Ikean kalusteilla; 500 Days of Summer -elokuvan pääpari leikkii Ikeassa kotia. Kohtauksessa on ironinen sävy: Ikean keittiömaailma liitetään leikissä 50-lukulaiseen yhdysvaltalaiseen lähiönukkekotielämään.

Veitikkamaisesti Ikeassa - Puckish behaviour at Ikea

Fight Club -kirjan ja elokuvan päähenkilö liittää Ikean keskiluokkaiseen tylsämielisyyteen suorasukaisemmin: “And I wasn’t the only slave to my nesting instinct. The people I know who used to sit in the bathroom with pornography, now they sit in the bathroom with their IKEA furniture catalogue.”

Tuttu sohva - Familiar couch

In literary theory the term archetype, that has its origin in the study of myths, is used to define things, characters and concepts that are in some way universal and mutual to all humans. Archetypes are symbols which meanings all humans are considered to understand through universal subconscious. For example, the archetype of evil woman as a seducer is typical to many myths and stories. Some literary scholars and psychologists believe that people subconsciously deal with their emotions and experiences as they meet with these archetypal images.

Newer term in art research is kenotype, the so-called new form. The term is used to define motifs that don’t carry the weight of myths and history with them, but have other meanings instead. Kenotypes are related to modern and contemporary culture. In children’s literature, for example, the subway and computer can be understood as kenotypes.

Ikea is a kenotype especially in contemporary cinema and television. I can recall many cases. In Serrano’s Family the characters’ apartments are furnished with Ikea. In the movie 500 Days of Summer the couple plays home in Ikea. The episode is ironic: Ikea’s kitchen world is connected in the play with American sub-urban dollhouse life of the fifties.

In the novel and movie Fight Club the protagonist associates Ikea straightforwardly with bourgeois obtuseness: “And I wasn’t the only slave to my nesting instinct. The people I know who used to sit in the bathroom with pornography, now they sit in the bathroom with their IKEA furniture catalogue.”

Ikea is an interesting kenotype because there are many contradictory attitudes towards the company. Some associate Ikea with safety, practicality, Northern European efficiency, and see it as a contributor to the equality of consumers. Other criticise it for representing disposal culture, sweatshops and middle-class tediousness.

Ikea is also a global kenotype. But are the meanings of it shared universally? When a Swedish, Saudi Arabian and American recognize an Ikea product in a movie, do they think and feel the same?

The Master Number 44 is the most powerful vibration of materialization. It’s known as the master of creating “Heaven on Earth”. The “44″ grounds and motivates people to awaken and manifest their hearts desire and to be influential in their lives and the world.

For the longest time I was running across LOTD’s using Archetype Cosmetics eye shadows in thes

For the longest time I was running across LOTD’s using Archetype Cosmetics eye shadows in these amazingly unique and deep colors. I did a little research and only read positive reviews on the product. Once I saw that the MMM as well as Phyrra recommended them, I broke down and placed a big order.

October 31, around noon :

In my giddy excitement I went over the site a few times and placed a big order. Normally I limit my first purchase with a company to only a few items around 20$. This went way outside that guideline as I was so enamored with a lot of the colors.

Placing the order I paid immediately via Paypal. I never received confirmation of the order (apart from Paypal) and I never received an invoice.

November 2, Monday :

After seeing some more looks over the weekend with Archetype and realizing they had a few Halloween shades I wanted to get, I sent them off a quick email asking for an invoice.

Hello,

I hope you’re having a good Monday after the Halloween weekend!!

I was wondering if it was possible to get an invoice for my order? I would like to purchase a few more shadows, but I want to be sure they were not on my original order.

My order info is XXXX

I never got a reply.

November 5th, Thursday :

I start peeking around the website again, this time I take note of this on their site :

You should immediately after ordering get an automated receipt; if not, please let us know and we’ll send you a personal one. We fill orders in chronological order. Also, we have been putting the shipped-through date on our pigments & face pages, too, so everyone can see exactly what date we’ve worked through. Currently demand is pretty high and we’re running around 3 to 6 weeks approximately… I know that’s a wide variable but we tend to average 4 weeks to 5 weeks pretty regularly. If you need your order sooner, please feel free to let us know, we can often accomodate (sic)you. If you do NOT receive an order confirmation, please email us at littlegreykitten@gmaill.com – you might also check your spam filter too.

So I email them again, asking for another invoice and get no reply.

November 16th, Monday :

After waiting for several weeks, I send another email. I send it to the email which I paid via Paypal as well as the one listed on the site (they are both different).

Hello,

I’m just sending another email to follow up on the order I placed on October 31, my order info is XXX. I’m still waiting to hear back about an invoice and I was also wondering if it was possible for you to give me an estimate of when it might be shipped? I see you state that there is a place I can check to see where you are shipping wise, but I can’t seem to find it.

Thanks so much for your time!

I hear nothing back.

November 23rd, Monday :

In talking back and forth with a friend online she tells me she received her order. She placed it on November 2nd and received it on November 20th. I just about fell over. If they are filling orders chronologically, where is mine? Her’s was for about 20$ worth of items, so it was smaller then mine, yes, but still it was placed after.

So I sent the above email again, saying it was now my fourth email attempt to contact them.

I also spoke to Phyrra who explained she was also having issues getting them to respond to her.

I also message them through various other places, such as MySpace, as she recommends.

At this point it’s been a while, and I’ve gotten no reply, so I also open a Paypal Dispute.

November 25th, Wednesday :

After waiting TWO days for someone to respond to my Paypal Dispute and sending a plethora of email to all the various email addresses I can find, I STILL haven’t heard anything, so I escalate the Dispute to a Claim.

Archetype has until December 4th to respond.

November 27th, Friday :

I send another message via email as well as Paypal.

I’m very sorry to have had to file a dispute, but it’s been almost a month now and I’ve sent almost a dozen emails asking for either an invoice or some sort of response to my rather large order. I’ve not heard anything, but now I’m finding more and more reports of people NOT getting orders or responses at all.

I’m afraid that at this point it’s a lost cause to expect anything, so I’m respectfully asking you to refund my money.

Thank you.

I get no reply.

I know from experience if someone files a claim against you in Paypal it freezes those funds from your account. So at this point I KNOW someone at Archetype must notice a chunk of change missing from their Paypal account, and I KNOW they are still accepting orders.

December 3rd, Thursday :

I still haven’t heard anything, and when I check Paypal, they have not even bothered to reply or refute my claim.

December 5th, Saturday :

I get an email while standing in line at Big Thunder Mountain at Disney (I can’t breath without my iPhone) that Paypal received no response from them and found in my favor, refunding my payment.

Would I recommend ordering from Archetype Cosmetics? NO.

I never heard a word from them after I paid.

Never answered the countless messages I sent.

Never even responded to Paypal.

I have no idea how they manage to stay in business with such shoddy, well, NO Customer Service. The shipping has apparently always been a problem with them, often having long delays. But one or two replies or follow ups to my inquires would have been enough to assure me that YES they are working on my order. YES there is someone who’s reading email, and YES they know they have my money and owe me product.

Overall: 0/5

Today’s Spam:

I apologize for being late. Had to move this past week. With that said, let’s move on. If you don’t know what an Archetype is, you probably won’t understand this post at all. So, an Archetype as defined by Dictionary.com: the original pattern or model from which all things of the same kind are copied or on which they are based; a model or first form; prototype. Generally, archetypes refer to a civilization wide concept, and I used to have notes on a lot of them that I have long since lost. Curse my luck.

I think there are personal archetypes. Reoccurring themes that form within a person’s mind, and if given a chance, apply themselves to whatever creative outlets they can. Being a role player, I’ve gotten the chance to notice my own. There are three of them. Remember, these are my own, and how I define them.

The Guardian – A noble soul that spends much of their time trying to defend those that are weaker than themselves. They are either too innocent to understand insulting behavior, or are genuinely forgiving of such. Given their way, they will die trying to defend or save another from peril. When faced with a decision to save one life or another, they will find themselves in a state of deep regret afterward.

The Magnificent Bastard – Cold and calculating, but not evil, this person tends to be in the middle of conflicts. If they have a goal (generally seeking knowledge), they will side with whoever furthers their goals, assuming they can’t manipulated both sides. If they have no goals, they are a balance-seeker, and will generally side with the underdog. They are not immoral, but usually strongly believe in the ends justifying the means.

The Psychopath – “Psychopathy is a personality disorder whose hallmark is a lack of empathy. [They are described] as ‘intraspecies predators who use charm, manipulation, intimidation, sex and violence to control others and to satisfy their own selfish needs. Lacking in conscience and empathy, they take what they want and do as they please, violating social norms and expectations without guilt or remorse.’” I took that from the Wikipedia article. Sufficient to say, that sums up my third archetype rather well.

I am, of course, curious to know where these Archetypes come from. Were they imprinted on me as a child, or did they develop from my own personality. Given the nature of two or them, the second one is an unnerving thought. But that’s what I’ve got. They do make for some interesting character dynamics, ’specially when they’re part of the same family. Insert Grin Here.

I do so enjoy role playing.

Well, I suppose I owe two posts this week, and two bits of creativity. I did take some pictures last week, so it’s a matter of figuring our what I did with my camera to get the pictures up.

Current Thought:

Why is it that everytime I get my own room, it’s extremely temporary?

Each Anatomy & Physiology class from the Fingerlakes School of Massage makes a trip to the cadaver lab in Seneca Falls, at the New York State Chiropractic College. There was nothing solemn or sacred about what I saw. The human body, even when treated and discolored with formaldehyde is an awesome spectacle, however, I came away with an even greater respect, not for the human body, but for the Soul and Ki that animate it. The magic is in what we can not see.

if you fall in love
with an air sign,
throw all caution
to the wind.
you may be happily swept up
into her skies,
far above what you thought was true,
before falling right back
into your own depths,
taking some welcomed air pockets with you.
they’ll tickle you
for a little while
as you tumble about in bed,
painting smiles on your face,
imploring you to remember what it was like
up in the clouds,
before they got
so heavy
they just
let you go.

she’ll inspire you to
reach for the heavens,
caressing your surface till it’s
closer to god
than it was without her.
she will leave
when it is time
to leave
and not even your greatest wave
can grasp her,
though you can
outstretch your crests
to try.

if you fall in
love with an air sign,
know her heat follows only
the wind.
you, however, once warmed,
will stay so for weeks.
when you both find yourselves
hot,
the fog you make will be so thick
that no ship, no man,
not even god himself
could see you through it.

till the wind blows
you will be the only two beings on this earth.
till the wind blows
you will dance dances you never learned
as if you knew them from birth.
till the wind blows
your heart will skip seventeen beats at a time.
till the wind blows
you will forget that you already know
what happens next.

when the wind blows,
she’ll sometimes sneak
flirted glances down at you,
and your gaze will be steady,
already adoring her
the same way
you always
have.

Colors Vibrate over Canandaigua Lake by DASG

A few weeks ago the final chapter of the crash of Flight 3407 came to a close. On a beautiful fall day in Buffalo the families of the crash victims gathered together one last time to pay their respects at a historic cemetery. On the drive to Buffalo I wondered… who will be there? More specifically, whose souls will be there? I actually brought my camera with the intention of taking random photos as I have on occasion caught interesting auras but as soon as we arrived at Forest Lawn Cemetery I realized that a camera was not needed. The vibrations were so powerful as to pull my head in a certain direction. My parents are here!… I excitedly exclaimed to my husband. A headstone with the name SPAETH (my maiden name) seemed to jump out at me as we started on the winding path through the cemetery in our car. I was mesmerized by the feel of what I had visually taken in. As I stepped out of the car I was immediately covered with a pleasant effervescence that followed me up the hill to the large white tent where the families were gathering. My parents William and Alice Spaeth, both long deceased… of course they would want to be present for this event to offer support.

After the ceremony as we said our goodbyes, gathering by our cars, pondering which way to go, a woman came up to us… I’ll help you… she said. Our conversation ended with… just follow me… And there she was… Julie… the number 44 on the woman’s license place. Of course she would be the one to help us… Julie lost her life on Flight 3407.

Everything vibrates at a certain frequency. The name Spaeth jumped out at me, vibrating with my family name; the souls of my parents, the effervescence that followed me up towards the tent; and Julie, whose presence vibrates with the number 44.

For me there are other remarkable vibrational frequencies; the number 444 and the name Alice. Be still… keep aware… and you will find your own synchronistic patterns or vibrational frequencies that are meaningful to you. They are the language of your Soul.

* Goddess of the Hearth — We all channel her to some extent, depending on how cozy and grounded we are.

**Tantalus stole the immortal food and drink of the Gods, then served up his son to them. His punishment? To be TANTALIZED eternally — To nearly drown in water he can never drink, to sit at a table loaded with food that he can never eat.

*** AMBROSIA — food of the Gods — and NECTAR — sweet drink of the Gods. Ambrosia is called the “food of the gods” for it is what makes them immortal, undying.

So NECTAR, literally overcoming death, NECTAR is literally a drink, a fluid. Of course both Nectar and Ambrosia are sweet and delicious but are, by definition, only enjoyed by Gods and the few HEROS, such as Hercules, who are permitted to “reach the gods.

The sweetness of immortality, IMPERISHABLE FAME, was strictly attainable by warriors in PIE culture, hence the warlike nature of the culture and the fact that the cultures that have descended from it devote their epics to the glorification of warrior heroes. But why are these heroes so eager to die heroically, so convinced that the formula “LOSE good fame – GAIN long life” is not worth the exchange (Watkins 176)?

What was thought for eternity, has been overcome by time

What was done for the temporany, has been changed and fed by time

Design should dialogue with time, and remember the basic rules that can give birth to the “anonymous objects” analyzed by Munari.
Objects are transitory materialisations of people momentary needs and actions.
With time, they become images of a world that exists nomore, but that still lies in our memories, in what we saw, read and learnt.
And if needs and actions didn’t change, like put wine in a bottle or light up our garages, these objects have the change to become archetypes.

Time can grant eternity to objects, design has to seed its projects with this potential opportunity.

Thanksgiving is a huge holiday in this country. Their favorite one many of my US friends say. It was

Thanksgiving is a huge holiday in this country. Their favorite one many of my US friends say. It was not a holiday where I grew up and as the meaning of holidays is very much tied to one’s culture and familial traditions, Thanksgiving as I saw it practiced in mainstream America meant very little to me. I love the idea of harvest festivals and of expressing gratitude, but I could not make sense of a national turkey day and an obese nation stuffing themselves silly followed by a shopping spree on Black Friday.

I wonder if those who consciously experience and express gratitude on Thanksgiving are a miniscule group. Maybe not, but probably not as large a group as they could be. How do we understand gratitude psychologically and how does one get there? Melanie Klein introduced gratitude, together with its opposite, envy, into psychological language. There are always two sides to everything. Just as light and shadow do, gratitude and envy go together. Jung had a profound understanding of the duality of nature. He knew that the opposite is always present, but usually hidden in the invisible world he called the unconscious.

Most people who experience gratitude describe a feeling of fullness and richness that is unrelated to any material possessions. They experience a well of goodness that does not run dry. There is enough good to go around for all. They feel as if they were plugged into a source that stills a thirst beyond the physical. Gratitude is an expression in response to an experience of being deeply cared for and held by something larger than oneself. This gratitude goes far beyond a thought of gratefulness that one’s lot is a little lighter to carry than one’s neighbor’s. Gratitude is fearless, it fosters compassion for all living beings and the ability to see life even in the so called inanimate matter.

I do not believe one can fully experience gratitude without being aware of its opposite envy. In Jungian thought gratitude and envy are archetypal forces. They exist outside of our individual lives, but we partake of them. In the case of envy, there is no escaping it. We all are envious to some degree. The problem is that envy lives in the shadows of the unconscious. Whatever is unconscious will be projected out. Our unconscious searches for a suitable object and we just hang our projection on this object like an old hat. Consciousness will trick us then into believing what what we see is “reality”. (Reality becomes more slippery the more we think about it.)

We all know some of these people, may even have been one of them at times, who spew nothing but negativity. Everything needs to be criticized, ridiculed, made small or put down. Envy destroys hopes and dreams. Envy is full of fear. There is never enough of the good. It is anti-life. It poisons the soul.

Envy is even harder to catch when it is directed against oneself. Then it manifests in that, often very rational and “adult” inner voice, that ridicules our desires and will stop us from believing that our dreams are worth pursuing. That you are too young, too old, too fat, lack education, lack money, not healthy enough or it is just plain impossible or unrealistic… I better stop, I made my point, the list could go on forever. Envy constricts and restricts and hardens, it turns the heart into an arid patch.

What to do about envy? Unfortunately there is no miracle cure or pill. But, as with everything else, awareness and acceptance are the first steps. Nothing changes without them. Envy is archetypal. We did not create it. We are only responsible for how we express it. We need to trace our negativity. Who or what is on the receiving end of our sneer? How can we put an image to that inner voice, that judge or saboteur that prevents us from living our life with courage and grit. As we take a stance and stand up to the poison of envy, its opposite, gratitude and trust in goodness, can be released. We don’t own goodness either, but we can take our fill from that cup that never runs empty, regardless of where and who we are in our lives. Gratitude – at last.

Happy Thanksgiving.

This page will show you how to create an Jave Enterprise application using Maven’s multi-modul

This page will show you how to create an Jave Enterprise application using Maven’s multi-module and archetype capabilities.

Requirements

Maven

Eclipse IDE

Java 5 or above

Access to the Command Prompt

Hello Enterprise

In the example we will name the application HelloEnterprise. This will be the parent project. The project will have 3 sub-projects listed below.

HelloModel – contains the business logic

HelloWeb – contains the Web application flow control logic

HelloEar – small sub-project used simply to create the ear

Create the Parent Project

The first step we will do is to create the parent project. This project will contain the others. Name the project something that is generic to the problem at hand.

mvn archetype:generate

choose the default (15) “maven-archetype-quickstart”

Define value for groupId: : test
Define value for artifactId: : hello-enterprise
Define value for version: 1.0-SNAPSHOT: :
Define value for package: test: :
Confirm properties configuration:
groupId: test
artifactId: hello-enterprise
version: 1.0-SNAPSHOT
package: test
Y: :

cd hello-enterprise
Edit the pom.xml and change the packaging to say pom instead of jar.

Create the Model project

For this step we will create a very simple model project that simply contains a single Model class. Though this is a very simple project it does show you how you can combine sub-modules into one ear file in the end.

mvn archetype:generate

Again choose option 15 just like before. This time answer the artifact id should be “hello-enterprise-model”.

Go ahead and create the model class

cd hello-enterprise-model

mvn eclipse:eclipse

Import the project into eclipse and create the following class and interface

Bean

package test;

import java.math.BigDecimal;

public class Product {
	private Integer id;
	private String name;
	private BigDecimal price;

	public Product(Integer id, String name, BigDecimal price) {
		this.id = id;
		this.name = name;
		this.price = price;
	}

	public Integer getId() {
		return id;
	}
	public void setId(Integer id) {
		this.id = id;
	}
	public String getName() {
		return name;
	}
	public void setName(String name) {
		this.name = name;
	}
	public BigDecimal getPrice() {
		return price;
	}
	public void setPrice(BigDecimal price) {
		this.price = price;
	}
}

Interface

package test;

import java.util.List;

public interface ProductDataManager {

	public abstract List<Product> getAllProducts();

}

Class

package test;

import java.math.BigDecimal;
import java.util.ArrayList;
import java.util.List;

public class ProductDataManagerImpl implements ProductDataManager {
	/* (non-Javadoc)
	 * @see test.ProductDataManager#getAllProducts()
	 */
	public List<Product> getAllProducts() {
		List<Product> list = new ArrayList<Product>();

		list.add(createProduct(1, "test1", BigDecimal.valueOf(12)));
		list.add(createProduct(2, "test2", BigDecimal.valueOf(13)));
		list.add(createProduct(3, "test3", BigDecimal.valueOf(14)));

		return list;
	}
	private Product createProduct(Integer id, String name, BigDecimal price) {
		Product product = new Product(id, name, price);
		return product;
	}
}

cd ..

Create the web project

To create the web project we will use an existing archetype that was created my me. It is an archetype of a very simple spring MVC application that prints some static text on the screen.

mvn archetype:generate -DarchetypeGroupId=com.vermatech \
-DarchetypeArtifactId=springmvc-archetype -DarchetypeVersion=1.0-SNAPSHOT \
-DarchetypeRepository=http://www.vermatech.com/m2repo

Answer the questions like this:

Define value for groupId: : test
Define value for artifactId: : hello-enterprise-web
Define value for version: 1.0-SNAPSHOT: :
Define value for package: test: :
Confirm properties configuration:

This blog explores druidry from a non-literal deity perspective. If you are looking for specific information I recommend you also check out my wiki page and the other resource links on the sidebar.

About Me:
I live in British Columbia Canada and am very fortunate to experience the full seasonal changes of nature. I have explored many spiritual paths including Wicca and Neopaganism. Although I have studied a number of courses, organizations, books, and resources I tend to follow my own form rather than having adopted a pre-existing form of druidy.

How can a druid be an atheist?
One of the greatest characteristics of druidy in modern society is honoring diversity. There are druids who are atheists, monothesits, polytheists, pantheists and many others. Nature forms an important part of the reverence of druids above and beyond their personal belief in deity. It is my belief that gods/goddesses are powerful symbols that were constructed by human beings. That does not mean that relating to deities does not work, psychological constructs and archetypes can be powerful motivators! Simply put the atheist perspective that I bring to the site is one that believes that there are no literal deities but acknowledges the existence of deities as creations of mankind.

How can you be a druid if we are not sure what druids believed/did?
The basis of druidy is in nature. As our views and knowledge of nature have changed with science and culture so must change the way that we relate to it. For psychological constructs and archetypes or rituals to have any meaning they need to be relevant. It is not my belief that druidy must be exactly reconstructed from ancient practices but rather based on principles that are relevant for modern society.

Aren’t you a druidess not a druid?
The word “druidess” is an 18th century invention and has no basis in history. Men and women were both referenced as druids. There is no reason that we need separate gendered terms especially in a modern society that believes in equality.

What is a bard? What is an ovate? What is a druid?
Many druidry organizations use these terms to denote what path of study the student is on. Each of these paths has a purpose and none are inherently superior to the others. Simply put bards are often about awakening creativity and expression, ovates about intuition and the inner person, and druids about wisdom and teaching.

-

This is one of the best music videos I’ve ever seen. Johnny Cash’s interpretation of this Nine Inch Nails song is beyond masterful. The lyrics and the images work together magnificently and the video sums up exquisitely the themes of Cash’s music – Americana, religion and the tragedies of his personal life. I love the biblical allusions, the old footage and particularly Cash’s intense but fragile presence. He seems to be an archetype of an artist who is great and sorrowful at the same time, and who is well familiar with the fine line between beauty and pain in life.

Breaks my heart every time.

I hurt myself today / To see if I still feel / I focus on the pain / The only thing that’s real / The needle tears a hole / The old familiar sting / Try to kill it all away / But I remember everything

What have I become / My sweetest friend / Everyone I know goes away / In the end / And you could have it all / My empire of dirt / I will let you down / I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns / Upon my liar’s chair / Full of broken thoughts / I cannot repair / Beneath the stains of time / The feelings disappear / You are someone else / I am still right here

What have I become / My sweetest friend / Everyone I know goes away / In the end / And you could have it all / My empire of dirt / I will let you down / I will make you hurt

If I could start again / A million miles away / I would keep myself / I would find a way

Been thinking about Jackson Pollock, and Pollock’s interest in Jungian psychology. Reading around so

Been thinking about Jackson Pollock, and Pollock’s interest in Jungian psychology. Reading around some of Jung’s ideas and considering Pollock as an archetypical hero in Jungian terminology.

Here is a web definition of Jung’s archetype of the hero:

‘The hero basically represents the ego. The hero is something we all identify with, something we all want to project to the world: a balanced, gallant personality with the ability to face obstacle with grace and strength. However, the hero is very ignorant of the unconscious, just like the ego is. The hero archetype seeks to battle these shadows, unaware of the fact that itself is created from the same thing. In other words our egos often seek to individualize ourselves, to make decisions with as little consequence as possible, yet it’s still connected to a collective psyche that includes hidden motives and drives. In Jungian psychology, the hero represents a self-sacrificing character that faces great adversity for some greater purpose.’

Collective consciousness how does it function on the web/ Cyberspace?

If archetypes are rooted to a shared consciousness what happens when that shared consciousness becomes a mechanical/electronic structure rather than an organic structure as it has previously been? Is this the reason for the rise in much negative human experience: cyber bullying/sense of isolation/ our need for rapidly changing identities?

According to Jung we are born with a psychological heritage as well as a biological heritage. Both according to Jung are important determinants of behavior and experience:

“just as the human body represents a whole museum of organs, each with a long evolutionary period behind it, so we should expect to find that the mind is organized in a similar way. It can no more be a product without history than is the body in which it exists” (Jung 1964, p. 67).

A plane is coming in for a landing at the small airport just outside of the Fond du Lac reserve community. There are no roads that are maintained allowing the outside world to penetrate too deeply into this northern settlement. At times during the year, a trail can be navigated by those unconcerned about the torture on their vehicle, a journey of hundreds of kilometres through an empty landscape, empty of human presence. And, during the summer, boats serve as the predominate form of transportation between communities along the stretch of the lake and river. This place exists in relative isolation and because of that, has a measure of insulation from the larger southern society.

Images such as this one seem to work a magic within me. Whether I have taken a photo of such a scene or simply allowed a scene to be witnessed, the images are powerful as they work often unspoken within my psyche. James Hillman, a post-Jungian speaks and works from his understandings of Jungian psychology, from a viewpoint he calls Archetypal Psychology. As withing Jungian psychology, Archetypal psychology understands images as psyche (“image is psyche” – Jung, CW 13). Hillman states:

… the soul is constituted of images, that the soul is primarily an imagining activity … (Hillman, Archetypal Psychology,1983, p. 6)

With this in mind, the photos I take have ceased being a recording of time, people, place or event; the photos are more than factual pieces of evidence that indicate my presence on the opposite side of the camera lens; the photos are also about imagining, about connecting with a larger, archetypal world, an alchemical inner world. In discovering these scenes, I continue the journey of self discovery in relation to the larger whole.

Create a Archetype Template

We start by creating an archetype from well…. an archetype…

Execute the following command

mvn archetype:create -DgroupId=test -DartifactId=test-archetype -DarchetypeArtifactId=maven-archetype-archetype

cd /test-archetype

Code Your Application

In this section we will take some time to code the project that we will install into this archetype. Since creating a Spring MVC application is beyond the scope of this page please navigate to the following page to see how this application was coded. We will move this application to this archetype so that it can be used as a starting point for new projects.

MySQL Test Connection using Spring MVC

Import files into the new archetype

At this time you can copy the files from the project you created using the above link into the src/main/resources/archetype-resources/

Before we can proceed we need to make some small changes to the project we just created and imported into this archetype.

These changes are necessary because when developers create project based on archetypes they are asked a few questions.

group id

artifact id

version

The group id is important typically its (com.yourcompanyname). Since developers can provide anything in this field you need to modify your template code to take this parameter and place your code into the right java packages.

Modify the project’s pom.xml

Before we can proceed we need to modify the template project’s pom.xml file. Replace the groupId artifactId and version tag’s with the following

  <groupId>${groupId}</groupId>
  <artifactId>${artifactId}</artifactId>
  <version>${version}</version>

The above step is necessary since the developers that are using your archetype to create their own project can use any group artifact and version. When the project generates maven needs to create a pom.xml file for the project with the values that were specified by the developer.

Modify the archetype descriptor

The archetype descriptor contains a list of files that are part of the archetype we are creating. It is located in the following directory.

test-archetype/src/main/resources/META-INF/maven/archetype.xml

<archetype>
  <id>test-archetype</id>
  <sources>
    <source>src/main/java/test/DBParam.java</source>
    <source>src/main/java/test/HelloWorldController.java</source>
    <source>src/main/java/test/TestDBConnectionController.java</source>
  </sources>
  <resources>
    <resource>src/main/webapp/WEB-INF/jsp/dbParameters.jsp</resource>
    <resource>src/main/webapp/WEB-INF/jsp/helloWorld.jsp</resource>
    <resource>src/main/webapp/WEB-INF/jsp/success.jsp</resource>
    <resource>src/main/webapp/WEB-INF/spring-servlet.xml</resource>
    <resource>src/main/webapp/WEB-INF/web.xml</resource>
    <resource>src/main/webapp/index.jsp</resource>
  </resources>
</archetype>

Modify the source files

During the creation of a project maven asks the user for the groupId. Maven uses this to place the source files into packages that represent the user’s groupId. For this reason we need to modify each of the source packages and change them to look like this…

package ${package}.test;

So go ahead and modify the three java source files and spring-servlet.xml. replace the package statement with what you see above.

src/main/java/test/DBParam.java

src/main/java/test/HelloWorldController.java

src/main/java/test/TestDBConnectionController.java

src/main/webapp/WEB-INF/spring-servlet.xml

Relocate Source If Necessary

Also you may need to relocate the .java files so they represent the package statement. This means if you replaced the following with a ${package} statement then everything under that must be moved to the highlevel folder.

com.mycompany.mygroup.program -> ${package}.program

In the above example the program package and everything under it needs to be moved to the top level (/src/main/java) folder.

The xml file needs to be modified because we need to tell spring to scan a different package for controller beans.

	<context:component-scan base-package="${package}.test"/>

Installing the archetype into Nexus

Make sure the nexus repository is up and running.

Before we publish the archetype we need to define the location of the Nexus repository.

We do this in the archetype’s pom.xml file

After adding this section your pom.xml file should look like this.

<project xmlns="http://maven.apache.org/POM/4.0.0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
  xsi:schemaLocation="http://maven.apache.org/POM/4.0.0 http://maven.apache.org/maven-v4_0_0.xsd">
  <modelVersion>4.0.0</modelVersion>
  <groupId>test</groupId>
  <artifactId>test-archetype</artifactId>
  <version>1.0-SNAPSHOT</version>
  <name>Archetype - test-archetype</name>
  <url>http://maven.apache.org</url>

<distributionManagement>
	<repository>
		<id>releases</id>
		<url>http://localhost:8081/nexus/content/repositories/releases</url>
	</repository>

	<snapshotRepository>
		<id>snapshots</id>
		<name>Internal Snapshots</name>
		<url>http://localhost:8081/nexus/content/repositories/snapshots</url>
	</snapshotRepository>
</distributionManagement>
</project>

mvn deploy

Open up the Nexus repository and verify that the archetype has been added. If it has not please review the instructions above before continuing.

Running the Archetype

In this section we will generate a project from an archetype we just created above.

open up the command line and navigate to a clean working directory.

mvn archetype:create \
  -DarchetypeGroupId=test \
  -DarchetypeArtifactId=test-archetype \
  -DarchetypeVersion=1.0-SNAPSHOT \
  -DgroupId=yourgroup \
  -DartifactId=your-project

You can also use the new format to generate a project form an archetype:

mvn archetype:generate \
  -DarchetypeGroupId=test \
  -DarchetypeArtifactId=test-archetype \
  -DarchetypeVersion=1.0-SNAPSHOT

Running your newly generated project

cd your-project
mvn jetty:run

At this point you can navigate to all the urls listed below:

http://localhost:8080/

http://localhost:8080/app/helloWorld

http://localhost:8080/app/dbParameters

Publishing your Archetype to a Website

Good News! You don't need a Nexus server. Maven artifacts can be published to plain old web sites.

To test this I have uploaded the test-archetype to the following location and used the following command to generate a project based on the archetype.

mvn archetype:generate \
  -DarchetypeGroupId=test \
  -DarchetypeArtifactId=test-archetype \
  -DarchetypeVersion=1.0-SNAPSHOT \
  -DarchetypeRepository=http://your static site hostname/directory of your repository

Maven makes a Http connection to the above archetypeRepository and gets all the data necessary to create the project.

Summary

As you can see creating an archetype is not much difficult. You can use this technique to create templates of small projects you find yourself creating often. Archetypes can be posted not only to Nexus repositories but static html sites as well.

That's all for now!!!

Hope this helped. If so please rate this page and/or leave me a comment.
