Page from St. Andrew's Takaka Cash Book A Receipt and Expenditure Cash Book can be a fascinating

Page from St. Andrew's Takaka Cash Book

A Receipt and Expenditure Cash Book can be a fascinating record to explore. The entries give a snapshot of the everyday goings-on that are not always recorded elsewhere in a parish collection. We discover, for example, the level and regularity of stipends paid, the amount of weekly offerings, what costs are involved in the upkeep of the parish buildings, and who undertook the cleaning of the church or the washing of the Communion linen (yes, they paid people for these tasks in the early days). The entries also give a fascinating glimpse into the social life of the congregation, the activities offered like a Sunday School Picnic, Garden Party, lectures or a Bazaar. There is an indication of the Congregation’s interests and support beyond its boundaries.

I found it really fascinating to flip through the first extant cash book (1908-1942) from the St. Andrew’s Takaka parish, a collection we have recently processed. The first entry showing the ‘amount carried forward’, indicates there was an earlier record which appears to be no longer extant, then follows the purchase of a new cash book and Minute Book.

In its first year as a fully fledged Home Mission Station, the parish held an Easter Festival and took a collection on Easter Sunday. This deserves a note as Easter was not an officially recognised religious festival in the Presbyterian Church in 1908; in fact it was into the 1930s before the General Assembly sanctioned Easter as part of its Religious Calendar.

The Missionary David James Albert, received erratic stipend payments of a limited amount during his 10 months sojourn in the district. The majority of other payments in this first year covered the upgrading of the manse and fencing off of the property. As Mrs Beattie received a refund for ‘sweets for Bazaar’ leading us to draw a conclusion that the ever-popular children’s lolly scramble was included in the Bazaar festivities and quite possibly sandwiches were offered for afternoon tea time indicated by C.W. Boyd’s refund for bread.

The income reveals the parish efforts to attract people and raise funds. Proceeds are recorded from a lecture given by David Albert, the bazaar, which was a significant amount, monthly collections from around the district are recorded and alongside, the names of collectors. These names can offer a tantilising insight for the family researcher into their forebears interests, activities and participation in Church life.

Moral of this contribution : Keep the parish cashbooks they contribute significant additional information to your stories.

Yvonne.

“We cannot go to the moon, Mars, or beyond without first learning to farm indoors on earth.”

I must admit, the idea of vertical farming reminds me of the sci-fi lore of the mid 20th century that imagined what the world might look like in the late 20th to early 21st century (see example above).

Vertical farming seems like a logical idea though, especially in Southern Ontario with its suburban and urban expansions. I was just reading an introduction for the 1869 Ontario County Index (which lists Sylvester Mackey, my great-great grandfather) that mentions how great the land is in Ontario for farming.

“Ontario is justly regarded as one of the first Agricultural counties in the Province. Of its area–estimated at 360,000 acres—there are upwards of 210,000 acres cleared and under cultivation, about 150,000 acres being under crop and the remainder are devoted to pasture. The soil is rich and fertile, and very productive.” (pg. 2, 1869 Ontario Country Index)

Sky Farm for Toronto by Gordon Graff

I can assume the current amount of land in Ontario dedicated to agriculture falls short in comparison to the amount in 1869. And so, with prime farm land being developed for non-agricultural uses, where else are we supposed to go if we want to create and maintain local farming and thus local food sources?

Sky Farm for Toronto by Gordon Graff

If vertical farming works, then even giant urban centres like the City of Toronto would be able to establish larger-scale local food sources. The only way Toronto can grow is up, and perhaps this might be the reality for other areas in the GTA in the future. I’m so interested to see what else develops from Sky Farm and for the concept of vertical farming altogether.

Abahlali baseMjondolo of the Western Cape Press Statement, Friday 27 November 2009 We will be holdin

Abahlali baseMjondolo of the Western Cape
Press Statement, Friday 27 November 2009

We will be holding a protest against state repression at New Road, Maccassar Village, from 11:00 on Saturday 28 November 2009.

Our movement is under serious attack in Durban. Our comrades in Abahlali baseMjondolo in Durban have been attacked and had their homes destroyed by an armed ANC militia supported by the local police and politicians. They have also been arrested, denied bail, beaten while in custody and attacked and seriously beaten by the police while going about their ordinary activities in their communities. Many of our comrades are living under death threats and have been turned into refugees. Many of our comrades are no longer able to appear in public in Durban. There have been longstanding problems with democracy in Durban but it is now clear that there is no longer any democracy in Durban. Durban ceased to be a democratic city on 26 September 2009 when this wave of violent repression was launched against our movement.

This is the worst case of state repression in post-apartheid South Africa but it is far from the first case. Over the years all of the movements in The Poor People’s Alliance have had their marches banned and been subject to arrest, assault and even torture at the hands of the police. We are all very familiar with rubber bullet, tear gas, holding cells and courts. We all confront regular illegal and violent evictions at the hands of the state. Here in Cape Town Abahlali baseMjondolo has recently confronted mysterious violent attacks, illegal and violent evictions from the state and arrests and police violence. Neither the criminalistion of the poor nor the criminalisation of dissent are new.

Our protest is in support of our comrades in Durban and we are demanding the immediate restoration of democracy in Durban. We also support the demand for an independent inquiry into all the attacks on our movement in Durban including those from both the militia and the police.

Our protest is also in defence of our own struggle here in the Western Cape. We also face repression here and it is clear that if we allow democracy to be done away with in Durban it will not be long before democracy is also done away with in Cape Town, in Johannesburg and across the country.

Silence is the speech of the defeated. We are not defeated and we will not be defeated. We are organised and we will remain organised. South Africa belongs to all who live in it and therefore we will continue to take our place in the cities and in all discussions affecting our communities and our lives. Our position is that each person’s life and intelligence counts the same and no ward councillor, police officer or land invasions unit will succeed to make us deviate from this position.

Nowadays online advertising is becoming a trend for many business owners. I recently read at Techcruch that after the first three quarters of this year being flat in online advertising now it is up by 1.7 percent from the second quarter of this year.We see different product promotions in our day to day life. But I have brought some very beautiful ads which will blow away your mind. I got these awesome illustrations on deviantArt so brought to you as a post. Hope you would like it!

Emergence Press Statement 11:38, 26 November 2009

The eThekwini Municipality is currently illegally evicting families at gunpoint in Mpola. Thirty people already have been left homeless. The community requests all press to rush to the scene and to witness the rampant criminality of the eThekwini Municipality for themselves.

Five cars from the municipality arrived at 10am, with Blue Ants armed with rifles and shotguns. The demolition team is now breaking down brick houses. according to the demolition team the evictions were ordered by the notorious local ward Councillor Dimba.

The evictions, happening now, are illegal and criminal acts. There was no notice, no consultation, no court order, and no alternative accommodation provided.

Some families, whose homes already have been demolished, are at school and at work, and will return to find they have nowhere to sleep tonight. The eviction team demolished all the materials of the houses, including the roofs.

Some of the registration numbers demolition team’s cars are: NDM6904, NDM6902, NDM6903. The demolition team says the municipal official overseeing the eviction is Mr. Zulu (076 354 8921)

Dear Housing M.E.C (Madikizela), Once again the Back Yarders together with the general community of

Dear Housing M.E.C (Madikizela),

Once again the Back Yarders together with the general community of Mandela Park would like to invite you with a special request to come and tell our impatient community exactly when the department will resume its next housing project in our area. Neither you nor any of the people in your department thought it relevant to attend our housing indaba two weeks ago. We hope that you do not ignore us this time.

The negligence demonstrated by the leadership of your department which your are aware of but choose not to interfere with is a worrying signal and it raises a lot of questions about your credibility. As you know, nothing happens in a vacuum and people who are normally law abiding and friendly people. People do not just start willy–nilly burning tires on the street and damaging properties.

Firstly, blaming Back Yarders for the misunderstanding and branding them as hooligans has afforded you an easy excuse for your failure to deliver your promise to us.

Secondly, your actions confuse those who are genuinely trying to get real solutions to the Mandela Park shame. You’ve been visiting the community radio station (Zibonele) more often in the past 2 months using them as a platform to relay your confusing messages regarding the Mandela Park “CRISIS”.

Even with your continued collaboration with the dysfunctional ward 97 councillor and its weak steering committee, you should not loose sight of what is real the problem.

Lack of communication and direction are your two biggest enemies so far – if the community knows exactly where they stand, half the battle is already won. Tell people what is the future plan! Be transparent and honest about it.

What then would be the solution for this mess that is brewing? The misprint by Cape Argus about last week attacks on the new houses alleging Back Yarder involvement is viewed by us as government’s motive and desperation to blame it on someone and to tarnish the image of residents of Mandela Park.

These are signs that there could potentially be something big brewing under the surface elsewhere. This is an issue that should not be ignored and swept under the carpet but rather something should be done about this. Because we have no control over the actions of a few community members, this crisis has the potential to escalate and turn into serious violence.

As government we understand your concern about people’s safety. We, too, are concerned about people’s lives. Christmas is around the corner people want a sense of security – not one’s attitude. We warn you not to keep stirring fights between poor people by building housing projects that do not benefit local residents. Stirring up this trouble might just bring the chickens home to roost in the end.

We submit to you our last letter for this year and we hope it might trigger a sense of love and caring in your heart. As the law abiding and good citizen that you are, we request that you at least give this community your ear.

We are asked frequently about the difference between the average high school “geek” that most computer consulting companies use and a professional IT person that Masley And Associates uses.

While it is true there are some very basic PC issues which both types of IT people could easily fix, there is a vast difference when it comes to support and more complex issues.

We only use the top Network Engineers and Network Administrators yet we offer them to our clients for the same low cost. We know how to find and retain the top IT personnel because we are the top IT personnel.

Most other computer consulting companies are owned and run by non-technical people with sales, marketing or business backgrounds while Masley And Associates is owned by a network engineer and administrator with multiple certifications and thirteen years hands-on experience in the field. Who would you rather have managing your IT Department; an experienced IT Professional or a Sales and Marketing guy?

We have twelve years of experience in IT, Management and multiple Certifications in networking including Microsoft and Novell – CNE, CNA, MCSE.
What this means to our clients is greater efficiency. While it would be no problem to use a high school “geek” to add memory to your home computer, most businesses would not want a high school “geek” working on their business network yet sometimes that is exactly what happens to some unfortunate businesses.

So how does an unknowing business find true IT professionals who are competent and capable of working on their systems and network?

1. Ask exactly which ceritifications they have and make sure they are certified in the “Top Three” – Microsoft, Novell and Cisco(they take years of study and practice to obtain). Most computer consulting companies find high school “geeks” willing to work for $20 per hour or less, get them their A+ certification(a one-day, basic PC knowledge test) and charge you more than $75 per hour for them! The truth is most other computer consulting companies are only qualified to replace memory or adapter cards in a PC.

2. Ask for references.

3. Ask for a guarantee.

4. Check BBB.com The Better Business Bureau for the company’s rating.

5. Ask how long they have been working in the IT industry and a description of some of the larger, more complex projects they have worked on.

The bottom line is your network is critical to your business and belongs in the hands of the professionals in order to save you time, money and effort. We are the professionals. Think of us as your outsourced IT department. Contact us today we are always available for hire.

Today, I virtually had the processing room to myself since everyone else is out for the holiday. This is a rare occasion, and one that I usually take advantage of by playing music and sometimes singing out loud. (And you thought archivists were serious, proper folks who never raise their voices above a whisper except to scold you when you pick up your pen!)

After many days of sighing loudly at the number of Civil War payment vouchers I was going to have to rehouse, I happily discovered that my pace rapidly improved with a little Billy Bragg playing in the background. I got through about ten linear feet today.

today's progress

I felt happy all day, and dancing a little bit in between boxes didn’t hurt! I should probably not reveal these secrets, but, then again, it increased my productivity and made me feel better about all of these gritty receipts that I have to rehouse. Perhaps it’s time for me to give in and buy an MP3 player. Especially since this is what I have yet to finish:

so many vouchers

There are a few more shelves below these too, but instead of being dramatic about that 80 linear feet of madness that awaits me, I’ll just dance my way through it…

Happy holiday, all.

This month we received requests from three individuals about volunteering at our facility. This alone is exciting news, given that most of the pre-existing volunteer base decided to vamoose after our old archivist left. Just having the company is a good thing, as the world of small-town archives can tend to get pretty lonely sometimes.

When I first started (as in 3 months ago…) I had envisioned this wonderful bustling place full of volunteers to assist me with my everyday duties. Unbeknownst to me, this was not what I had in store.

After about 2 months of muddling through (although I am told I am doing quite well, it’s still difficult to believe sometimes), I decided to send the word out that we were taking volunteers of all ages, shapes and sizes! A volunteer casting call, so to speak. The response has been less than totally enthusiastic, but I only needed a small base of volunteers that I could count on. So, I posted a volunteer section on our organizational website. By posting the volunteer application form on our website, I received a few ‘hits.’

Since that time, I have had a high school student in doing some volunteer service hours (mandatory here in our wonderful province of Ontario), one in to catalogue my reading room resources, and a third who will be starting next week organizing our photographic (copy) collection in the reading room.

I’m so happy they’ve chosen to use our little facility to give back to their community!

Let’s keep ‘em coming!

Today, Wikileaks released (or are about to release) 500,000 intercepted pager messages from 5 hours

Today, Wikileaks released (or are about to release) 500,000 intercepted pager messages from 5 hours before the events of September 11th to 24 hours after . Right away, on the site’s homepage for this index, I feel like I’m about to step into an archive and respond in the same matter physiologically. My heart beats a bit faster before I open the page that contains the first messages sent after the first tower was hit.

On monday we did presentations about our thesis project summaries. Fellow classmate Kate Tarini’s work features archive spaces, but she also discussed the body’s physiological experience of an archive. The wealth of information around you, the giant spaces…it’s almost sublime, and I know that I find myself having different kinds of reactions to these spaces and the information within. I become a bit flustered, anxious, perhaps sometimes excited, imagining what’s possible in store for me.

And like an archive where different items will have more meaning than others, so is this pager messages index. The long page of text filled with mundane messages from spouses, office workers, virus hosts is slowly replaced by responses to 9/11.

Media reports are noting that most of the messages are confusion about what was happening. I saw one that reported it was a bomb detonation. Already the index is being analyzed for information it can give us about the reactions of people to the event.

I found this index to be a great example of the kind of physiological responses an archive can produce.

Why do people think they know more about what America needs then the next? Are they politicians,? anthropologists w/ a focus on economics and politics? Are they geniuses? NO, we are peons that don’t know jack crap about our nation!

So let me get this right… I have to hate Obama to pass the Republican purity test? But I also have to lie about spending? As far as the numbers go neither the Republicans or Democrats have saved us any money

I was told the other day, “The Constitution was a living document so we need to rewrite it from time to time”. WTF!

What’s up with all the federal rallies when you know you can’t do jack unless you rally at the local government level. I think people are afraid they would be recognized or have to confront the actual person being accused.

I think there should be a requirement that every elected official and every official appointed by an elected official has to disclose everything they did that year and everywhere they went. Including explanations. Then the constituents should be allowed to ask questions in an open forum about any detail they choose. But the twist would be, if the answer wasn’t satisfactory then the constituent should be able to throw a frozen turkey at the official

I was speaking with my lovely wife the other day about behaviors and showing her how chill I am when

I was speaking with my lovely wife the other day about behaviors and showing her how chill I am when all of a sudden!…. I began my OCD exercises for the day Why I give that woman ammo, I will never know. So, for all of you that don’t care, here is what I do everyday, to start the morning, so that my heart doesn’t palpitate or an anxiety attack doesn’t flood me over during the day:

When I get up in the morning, I have to hit the alarm clock three times (even if the alarm doesn’t go off)

I then have to make sure that nothing is touching my towel when I am taking a shower.

Next I make sure nothing is touching my belt that is hanging from the same rack as my towel.

I have to kiss my wife twice before I leave

I check all three locks three times on each of my doors. If I forget one time I have to make sure I check it enough that I feel I have met the denominator of three rule. I have driven back to my house from 5 miles out to make sure this happens.

I have to drive a certain route to work unless I have pre approved it in my head prior to getting up for the day.

All that happens inside of 30 minutes. I would go on but I have another 23 1/2 hours left. It would take forever.

I don’t understand the OCD things but when I try to break it, I always seem to just change into another OCD role.

One of the richest collections in this phase of the project is the archive of Hugh Brock, journalist

One of the richest collections in this phase of the project is the archive of Hugh Brock, journalist and peace campaigner. His role in the emergence of an organised non violent direct action movement in Britain in the 1950s was fundamental. As editor of Peace News, he steered the pacifist journal towards coverage of non violent protest and nuclear disarmament, leading to a break with the Peace Pledge Union in 1961. He was a leading member of the PPU’s Non Violence Commission and of the first groups to grow out of this, Operation Gandhi and the Non Violent Resistance Group.

The signpost points left to Aldermaston station

Still carrying the PPU slogan, 'Wars will cease when men refuse to fight'

A small-scale march to Aldermaston AWRE was carried out by Operation Gandhi members on 19 April 1952, as shown in these tiny black and white photographs.

Brock’s files read like a key to the network of British and American peace campaigners active during this period. Many of these groups were transient and experimental, lasting a few years at best. Protests by individual pacifists, such as Harold Steele’s attempt to reach the Christmas Island nuclear test site in 1957, fed into the creation of an organised movement. International links with Japan, India, Europe and Africa weave through the collection. Overlapping concerns with apartheid in South Africa, civil rights in the United States, the Soviet invasions of Hungary in 1956 and Czechoslovakia in 1968 make clear that something new was emerging from the traditional pacifist stance of renouncing war. This was a much broader view of peace based on social justice and equal rights. This is the perspective by which the Commonweal Collection is guided.
