Technology has progressed so far and is readily available to the average person via consumer goods and the Internet that any musician can experiment with limitless possibilies. It’s a bonus if you can program a computer because signal processing is so easy with JACK audio server. JACK is a low latencey audio server that runs on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. It’s free and it’s open source. JACK allows you to interconnect devices and applications (even your own computer programs).

Since fall is here and winters on it’s way, I’ll need something to do while hunkered down inside. So I’m going to make some videos about it.  Even if you can’t program a computer, the videos will contain useful information about mixed, recording and applying effects (signal processing).

I find it neat that I can play my guitar through processors that I’ve created. I’ll get into that in later videos.

First Murder on Earth! The story of Habeel and Qabeel!

The story of Habeel and Qabeel (Abel and Cane) is mentioned in  the Sacred Scriptures .

The emphasis  of this story is on jealousy which is such a  powerful human emotion.

Jealousy is an emotion whose effects “frequently get out of control. It is a common observation that the experience of jealousy can last much longer than the one of a basic emotion like anger, without losing its original intensity.

The word stems from the French jalousie, formed from jaloux (jealous), and further from Low Latin zelosus (full of zeal), in turn from the Greek word ζήλος (zēlos), sometimes “jealousy”, but more often in a good sense “emulation, ardour, zeal”.

The experience of jealousy involves:

• Fear of loss
• Suspicion or anger about betrayal
• Low self-esteem and sadness over loss
• Uncertainty and loneliness
• Fear of losing an important person to an attractive other
• Distrust

If we are in the sad position to experience such an emotion, we should bring to mind that jealousy was the cause of the first murder in humanity.

Allah says in  the Holy Qur’an, Surah Al’Ma’idah

5.27] And relate to them the story of the two sons of Adam with truth when they both offered an offering, but it was accepted from one of them and was not accepted from the other. He said: I will most certainly slay you. (The other) said: Allah only accepts from those who guard (against evil).
[5.28] If you will stretch forth your hand towards me to slay me, I am not one to stretch forth my hand towards you to slay you surely I fear Allah, the Lord of the worlds:
[5.29] Surely I wish that you should bear the sin committed against me and your own sin, and so you would be of the inmates of the fire, and this is the recompense of the unjust.
[5.30] Then his mind facilitated to him the slaying of his brother so he slew him; then he became one of the losers
[5.31] Then Allah sent a crow digging up the earth so that he might show him how he should cover the dead body of his brother. He said: Woe me! do I lack the strength that I should be like this crow and cover the dead body of my brother? So he became of those who regret.
[5.32] For this reason did We prescribe to the children of Israel that whoever slays a soul, unless it be for manslaughter or for mischief in the land, it is as though he slew all men; and whoever keeps it alive, it is as though he kept alive all men; and certainly Our apostles came to them with clear arguments, but even after that many of them certainly act extravagantly in the land.

So the first murder took place.

Allah (swt) also revealed that :

“And whoever commits a sin, he only commits it against his own soul; and Allah is Knowing, Wise.” [Holy Qur'an 4.111]

“Say: What! shall I seek a Lord other than Allah? And He is the Lord of all things; and no soul earns (evil) but against itself, and no bearer of burden shall bear the burden of another; then to your Lord is your return, so He will inform you of that in which you differed.” [Holy Qur'an 6:164]

So the murderer solely carries the sin of  the  murder of his brother.

Sadness

We can all be prone to such a negative feeling as jealousy.

We should recognise the signs, admit it to ourselves that we have a problem, and then take the necessary steps to overcome it.

Make dua, always asking Allah( swt) to protect us and strengthen us  from this terrible emotion and its effects.

Leyendo algún blog -que ahora no puedo recordar como para darle todos los créditos- me encontré con un enlace a este espectacular tutorial / Manual sobre herramientas de producción musical en Linux.

Consta en total de 5 capítulos y explica -no tan en produndidad como yo quisiera pero lo suficiente como para darse un pantallazo general-, el uso de unos cuantos programas para grabar, secuenciar, samplear, mezclar y remasterizar en linux.

Si bien se trata de varias programas separados, todos interactúan entre si de forma transparente como si fueran uno solo por medio del protocolo Jack, con lo que el resultado final nada tiene que envidiarle a Reason o Cubase para windows.

Se da un vistazo General a Audacity y Rezound para grabar y generar tracks y samples para pasarle a la caja de ritmos, Hydrogen como caja de ritmos (un joyita de programa, para sacarse el sombrero), Ardour / Rosegarden como secuenciadores y Jamin para el masterizado final…

En Gentoo todo lo que tuve que hacer para instalar toda la suite de aplicaciones fué agregar a mis use flags: lv2 mad lame jack ladspa.

Todas las aplicaciones están disponibles en el overlay pro-audio y funcionan a la primera.

Hasta el momento la única complicación que he encontrado: El servicio jack solo corre como root y no funciona como usuario normal sin privilegios. Para solucionarlo tuve que agregar al archivo /etc/security/limits.conf :

And I reiterate it to the point I think I am trying to drive off any affectionate behavior. This also does not seem psychologically healthy, maybe I need to speak to my counselor about that as well. There are so many things to talk about.

I am no longer a boy, only this penis seems to be the last serious vestige, yes, my bone structure, facial hair etc say boy, but my heart says “All woman, thank you very much”. So, my wife and I are divorcing or annulling, whichever, after her little tossing me under the bus today, it looks more like a divorce and I am NOT feeling amicable. I’ll get over it, women do. I need to move on. I like women, sexually, well enough, am not terribly interested in men or women one way or another at this point. I am ambiguous, yes, but more as in I am so absorbed in this change as to be fearful of any further romantic entanglements. I want to be alone and celibate so I can think clearly.

See, I have male sex parts. So women expect me to have this deep burning desire to place my penis in their vaginas. Yeah, sometimes a good release is awesome, but mostly, it confuses me. I feel like a woman, not a man. So performing sexually as a man I feel almost lesbian. And I don’t have any clear idea. Lesbian, Bi, Gay, Straight SHIT! I want to just crawl into bed, pull the covers over my head and cry every time I am asked. I DO NOT KNOW ! I do not care ! At this point I dont even really know who the hell I am let alone something as tricky as sexual oreintation why can you not all leave me alone with that question ? Why is it so important you, you who will have NO sexual relationship with me, you need to know what goes on in my confused little bed, one of the few places I ever get physical comfort ? For fucks sake, ask me how my heart feels, ask me how my soldier is, ask me how my oldest son and I are working out my transition but stay the hell out of my bedroom for Gods sake. Ask me how bad it feels to be getting divorced, something concrete and real. Dont ask me who I am sleeping with, it doesn’t matter.

But, back to the point, He is developing feelings for me. His 14 yr old son has met me and likes me and calls me “Mom” (okay, break time, I need a tissue SO bad right now) and he does NOT care I was a boy once, or that I have years to go before I am close to complete. Or that he is Army and I am not a genetic girl (The army prefers that kind of relationship in its officers and enlisteds) or a million stupid things that really do not seem to matter. He cares if I have gotten enough sleep, he cares if I am happy or if I am having a good day, he cares that I am excited about going out to go shopping or get my hair done,

he cares about me

whatever I did right I may never know but

he cares about me.

To use LADSPA effects in ARDOUR projects one can just add one from the list by double-clicking in the field above the volume control in the mixer panel. But sometimes you want to use the same effect on different tracks or mix the original with the effect. If there is no Dry/Wet-mix control in the effect plug-in the latter can be done via SEND-effects. Adding the same effect to different tracks through a SEND plug-in, CPU usage is smaller than adding it to every single track. Although, once you know how it works it is quite straightforward, but I struggled a lot getting it to work.

To do so one adds a bus to the mixer panel. Then a SEND plugin is chosen by right-clicking in the effect field of the desired audio track. This plug-in can be attached to another track or bus  where one can add effects in the usual way. The important trick which finally does the job and which took  me a while to figure out is to activate the SEND connection by right-clicking on it. In the menu you find a activate command.

From now on all pre-fader signals from the chosen track go into the chosen bus where effects can be added. Pre fader means that you can change the volume of the original track (or even turn it down to mute) and he signal is still received by the effect bus. If the SEND is added into the field below the volume control it is a post fader send and the signal goes to the effect bus filtered.

Ubuntu Studio es una gran distribución basada en la ya muy popular Ubuntu pero esta dirigida a todos los profesionales y entusiastas del vídeo, la imagen, el audio y todos los medios en general, cuenta con algunas diferencias que vale la pena notar; por ejemplo, cuenta con una pequeña colección de paquetes independientes de Ubuntu, entre los que puedes encontrar un Kernel de Linux de Tiempo Real. Además otras herramientas muy útiles como Ardour 2 y JACK ya vienen propiamente instaladas y configuradas.

My earlier post detailed the steps for building Ardour with VST support, which was the first step in getting the dblue Glitch plug-in running on linux.

This plug-in brings the concept of effects sequencing to your host workstation, and provides an intriguing method for creating unusual sounds and rhythms.  I find the interface intuitive, and the visual design is clean and well organized.

I downloaded the file dblue_Glitch_v1304.zip and extracted to my vst directory.  In my case, with Ardour on Ubuntu 8.10, the vst plug-in location was /usr/lib/vst.

Now that the plug-in is copied to the appropriate directory, I launched the vst version of Ardour using the command ardourvst, opened the mixer, and added the plug-in to one track.

In order to work with Ardour, MIDI transport must be disabled in Glitch, as shown below:

The 4 gray squares above, along with the step envelope setting still produce one output pulse for each step, shown in the sine_440_blank region shown in the tracks screenshot below.

Unfortunately, vst plug-ins are not able to track Ardour’s tempo map, which means the Glitch sequencer is free wheeling, and not in sync with Ardour.

I bounced the Glitch output to a file and imported that back into Ardour to determine the  tempo of the output.  The Glitch output appears to be 80 bpm default, though it is not in phase with Ardour since there is no sync.  This is usable if you just chop up the output and re sync it to your project.  I tried Ardour’s rhythm ferret, but the transients weren’t detected correctly.

This screen shot shows 3 output tracks from Glitch, which were adjusted on the timeline to start in sync.  The source file is a 440 sine wave, shown on the bottom track.

To give you an idea of how Glitch works, the Glitch settings for the sine_440_gater region are shown here.

The step envelope setting was increased to 2 steps, as shown below, to hear more of each effect.  The result is shown in the sine_440_8617 region in the tracks screenshot.

Glitch is a great tool for creating new sounds, and even though the Glitch sequencer is not in sync with Ardour, it is easy to chop and re sync if needed.

You will not be able to save presets in Glitch, so be sure and bounce your creations before closing Glitch.

When attepting to save a new preset, I receive the following error:
“[ERROR]: no support for presets using chunks at this time”

Hola a todos!!!!

Paso mucho tiempo desde el ultimo post, pero estoy de vuelta.

Mi ausencia se debió a que durante los meses de enero y febrero de este año estuve realizando un disco hecho integramente con soft libre (Sin hardware profesional). Todo con los excelentes programas que linux ofrece en lo que respecta a música y sonido (Ardour. Rakarrack, Zynaddsubfx, Hydrogen, Jamin )

Se titula “Camino” y no es muy extenso ya que mi idea era hacer un disco en el que todos los temas conformaran uno solo (Por eso el zip contiene un solo mp3). Todos los temas fueron compuestos y tocados por mi exceptuando las partes de batería que las ejecuto mi hermano Tanda el cual también realizo el arte de tapa haciendo un excelente trabajo en la ilustración y el diseño (También con soft libre: Gimp y MYPAINT ) .

My goal was to run VST plug-ins on Linux, but I soon discovered there are issues related to making that happen. After brief research, I decided building Ardour with VST support appeared to be the best option. What follows are the steps I took for building Ardour on Ubuntu 8.10.

Excellent directions are available on the Ardour site for building the application with specific options, including VST support.

Following the directions on the Ardour site for building the application with VST support on Linux, here are the specific steps I needed to complete for Ubuntu 8.10. The package and library names listed below are for Ubuntu 8.10.

Building Ardour with VST support on Ubuntu 8.10 – The experience, packages and libraries.

All packages and libraries below were installed using the versions available through the synaptic package manager.

Packages:

• gcc/g++ 3.x or above
• scons 0.96 or above
• python (2.3.4 or above)
• gettext 0.12.1 or above
• pkg-config 0.20 or above
• libtool

Using synaptic package manager, I searched for each of these packages to see if they were already installed or mark for install. From the list above, I only needed to install scons, gettext and libtool.

Libraries:

• libjack0
• libjack-dev

• libxml2
• libxml2-dev

• libxslt1.1
• libxslt1-dev

• libart-2.0-2
• libart-2.0-dev

In general, I only needed to install the -dev package for each of the libraries above.

I chose to build version 2.8 of Ardour, as that is the stable release at this time, and my goal is to run vst plug-ins on Linux. The following are required for Ardour 2.x, and the specific version I needed for Ubuntu 8.10 are listed here.

The Ardour Source code is available on the download page at Ardour:

Once the source code was downloaded, I created an “ardourvst” directory in my home directory, and extracted the source code file in that location.

There are many options, listed in the Ardour tutorial. I chose to select Freesound support along with VST by running the following command line in the main directory of the Ardour source code.

scons VST=1 FREESOUND=1

The build ran for more than 30 minutes, once complete, the last line of output was:

• scons: done building targets.

Next, I ran the install with root access using the command:

sudo scons install

The result again was:

• scons: done building targets.

This version of Ardour can be run with the command:

ardourvst

Since I have not set any vst related environment variables, Ardour will search for vst plug-ins in the /usr/lib/vst or /usr/local/lib/vst directories which will need to be created or linked to if they don’t already exist.

I prefer to create a link from my home folder so I can load VST plug-ins to my home folder. You can do this by running the following command and replacing the first path with your preferred path.

sudo ln -s /home/yourpath/vst /usr/lib/

Or alternatively you can just create the directory

sudo mkdir /usr/lib/vst

I next closed Ardour, downloaded a VST plug-in, dBlue Glitch, and extracted the file to my VST directory where Ardour will look for it.

Launching Ardour again, the plug-in was available as shown below. So far so good, the VST plug-in is working!

My next post will cover the use of dBlue in Ardour.
