We’ve been lucky enough to spend the opening notes of the the year out of the rain (but not out of the cold) in the testy wilds of the US, where cheesecake ain’t cheesecake unless its the width of your hand span and hip-hop reigns supreme. Despite this musical difference, it’s made our least inspiring month of the year pretty, er, inspiring, but if you haven’t been so fortunate here’s our catch-up ten for the first fortnight of January… in no particular order…

1. Argy & The Martinez Brothers – Debbie Downer (Objektivity US)

For one so young, Argy has notched up a more than impressive back catalog. He may have been watching too much Saturday Night Live but it hasn’t stopped him teaming up with The Martinez Brothers to churn out this EP, an impressive binding of the former’s techno roots with the latter’s more classic house sounds. Second cut ‘Where’s Mr Brown’ is alright, but the title track is the standout with its melodic vocal sample – well having it.

2. Iku – Afete (Yoruba UK)

I forget in which podcast I first heard Yoruba’s original mix a couple of months ago, but it has been haunting me ever since. An excess of vocals in the second mix might be too much for some, but they’re both playful housey little numbers and worth a spin to support Osunlade’s UK label.

3. Anton Zap – Pepper Exchange EP Vol 2

Excuse me for expressing again my love of Quintessentials but with consistently good releases it’d be a crime to omit. If Anton Zap’s impressive Volume 1 wasn’t enough, here’s more of the same positive warm deep house. Once again A1 is doing it for us.

4. Boola – Keep It Dirty EP (LoMid High Organic)

A varied EP from Romanian Boola here – A1 strips it right back whilst second tracks Blitschki Oo (what the hell does that mean?!) and Garop  turns it up a notch in true ar:pi:ar style, some funk filled guitar samples and more drums – nice trombone fella!

5. DJ Wild – Sol (Motivbank Germany)

A nice little groover of an EP from Motivbank, Guido Schneider’s interesting and enigmatic new label. Their first release bought us Reboot’s smashing ‘Assign The Source’, Phile suspects they’re one to watch in 2009. Both tracks are latin inspired with loads of percussion, perhaps making it a bit tool-ish in places, but its rescued by some solid jackin’.

6. Phonique – The Pump EP (Dessous)

Deep in places, more up-tempo in others, this EP is testament to Phonique’s diverse production skills. ‘Bike Ride’ is our choice, quite warm and playful – deep but with obvious dancefloor appeal.

7. Loin Brothers – Heavy Helmet (Future Classics)

Sydney disco due Brendan ‘Long John Saliva’ King and Colin ‘DJ Silvio’ Prout of Paradise Lost fame collaborate as the Loin Brothers; this tongue in cheek debut is full of funk and epic power-chord guitars. Geometric type cover art is by visual artist Gemma Smith, making this a very sophisticated package all round.

8. Kris Wadsworth – State and Griswold (Adult Only)

One of our favourite producers at the moment, Kris’ has Detroit in his veins. Funky, jazzy vibes here – the bassline in ‘Keep Pushin’ is particularly pleasing. Chris Carrier’s remix takes it into ever so slightly techier territory. On the whole a laid back EP for connoisseurs.

9. Kapuchon & Benny Rodriguez – Unexpected EP (Beyond)

Warm, detroit house – we likey. Subtle builders, good hi-hat; and whilst synthy in places, this comes across as smooth rather than overly dreamy. The warped and acidic Potato Tomato is the toughest of the three.

10. Boogie Drama – The Conspiracy (Mood Music)

Our favourite Italians by far, Lele Sacchi and Sandiego return with a housey, driving set full of chunky baselines, nice effects and not too much synth. Part two has most energy.

Wieder mal ein cleverer Schachzug von Steve Bug und Poker Flat. Mit der “Focus On”-Serie, die letztes Jahr mit Guido Schneiders Release ihren Anfang nahm, verbindet das Hamburger Label geschickt Mix-CD und Artistalbum. Weiter auf Tonspion

Argy, ou Argyris Theofilis de son vrai nom, est né en Grèce. Encore jeune aujourd’hui (23 ans), il débute réellement dans la production en 2005 sous des labels tels que Love Dose, Poker Flat, Raum Musik, Cocoon, Deeply Rooted House ou Cargo Edition.
Dès 2007, l’actualité du jeune homme devient incroyablement chargée. C’est l’année de sortie de l’un de ses succès : Unreliable Virgin’ sur le label de Mr. Väth, Cocoon Recordings.

Après 2007, l’année club, 2008 est l’année studio. Concentrez-vous sur Argy, ce n’est pas un ordre mais bel et bien le nom de son premier album “Focus On : Argy”, qu’il a sorti il y a quelques jours.

En collaboration avec Solomun, DJ Gregory, Jerome Sydenham et The Mole, l’oeuvre de très bonne qualité est un subtil mélange entre la techno et la house.

“Focus On : Argy” est composé de 13 tracks qu’Argy a composé ou simplement remixé et qui pour la plupart étaient déjà sortis en maxis précédemment. Pour voir le côté noir de la chose, on peut dire que l’album est une simple compilation des meilleurs compositions de son auteur, mais il mérite vraiment que l’on s’y intéresse, alors foncez !
