Chile to Peru - The Cheap Way

In June this year, I went to Peru for about 1 ½ months. It was a low budget solo backpacking trip in the quest for new traveling experiences.

This is how I traveled for cheap $$$!

If you are in Chile and can’t find a cheap airplane ticket, the next best (and cheaper) thing to do is to buy a bus ticket from Expreso Norte to Arica. This is the cheapest ticket you can get because others like Pullman and TurBus are just too expensive and the services are just the same. Although the bus drive is 28 hours, the seats are quite comfortable and you’ll get meals and crappy chick flicks or the worst Chinese fighting movies to watch during the trip. When you arrive in Arica, you take a cheap cab to Tacna and after 1 hour you are in Peru. I did this and to be honest, it wasn’t all that bad.

It really depends on how willing you are to give up comfort to have money to do better things like having money to go to Machu Picchu!

Chile: Lauca National Park

The road from Tacna, Peru to the Chilean border traverses barren ground, flat and lifeless. The Atacama Desert, one of the planet’s driest regions, exists here because of the cold Humboldt Current that flows from the Southern Ocean northward and the barrier of the Andes Mountains to the east. Somehow the combination prevents rain from falling in the coastal plains.

Just before the turn of the millennium I traveled from Tacna to Arica, Chile with Davarian Hall and a fellow eco-tourism professional named John. We wanted to rent a car in Arica and drive into the high Andes to Parque Nacional Lauca and view its astounding collection of rare wildlife and also the legendary beauty of the park’s high volcanoes, several of which approached 600o meters in altitude. The road through the park itself climbed to nearly 5000 meters, so we figured we would be in for some rarified vibes.

But first we had to survive the trip to the border. Our tour company had thoughtfully provided us with an early 1970s Chevy Impala. Unfortunately the driver, a tall, thin man, presumed his real calling should have been as a professional race car star. As soon as we left town he pushed the accelerator to the floor and kept it there. We whirled along the pot-holed highway at 100 miles per hour.

Now, I used to own a 1975 Impala myself, and these Chevrolets were solid, well-built vehicles. But as good as they were, Impalas were not impervious to the climate of southern Peru. They required regular maintainance in peripheral areas like the suspension, steering, and tires. The specimen we were given had bald tires, dead shocks, and a tendency to oversteer at high speeds. If we’d hit a hole or a rock during the hour-long drive to the border, the car would have lost control and we would have ended up in tiny pieces scattered about the desert, one more puzzle for future archeologists to decipher. There were already plenty of those; humans had lived along this coast for 10,000 years or more and had mummified their dead during ancient times and drawn countless petroglyphs that had yet to be understood.

Checking out of Peru was an easy task, but the Chilean side of the frontier was manned by humorless guards who held grudges against every foreigner who wished to enter their country. We were made to go behind curtained cubicles to be searched. One Customs Man dropped a Peruvian’s laptop computer on the concrete floor and I heard the distinct sounds of hundreds of tiny components smashing into bits of plastic and metal.

But we were eventually granted permission to enter Chile, and a much calmer driver took us into Arica, a beautiful, small, ocean-view city of maybe 170,000 residents and more civilized than its neighbor to the north. The restaurants certainly served better food and the women looked gorgeous and more fashionably dressed. On the other hand, the cops seemed less personable than their Peruvian counterparts. Funny mix of things that a few decades of fascist rule will impart to a society.

For reasons I no longer remember, we determined that I would be the sole driver of the expedition to the high Andes. We rented a puny little sedan, maybe a Hyundai, and left Arica after spending one night in a modest hotel. After following the coast a short distance we turned inland and began to climb almost immediately into the Andean foothills.

1) The road to Lauca begins its ascent from the coast. The valleys here were irrigated but had limited crop production.

The scenery became more spectacular with every hairpin turn in the road. The highway was a major engineering project, for it ran all the way to Bolivia, and was built to very high standards, with guard rails, shoulders, even yellow lines to divide the traffic flow. Amazing. You’d never get anyone to spend money on such frills in Peru.

We had one final human obstacle to overcome. At a four-corners major intersection stood a patrol of motorcycle police, there to stop and question passersby. I considered slowing my speed and smiling at them with a wave of the hand, indicating that as a gringo I was too dumb to know I was supposed to stop. The tactic had worked in Peru and I’d used if once or twice there when driving. But an inner voice told me that the day would turn out better if I halted for their inspection.

The cop who stepped beside my open window was overweight and gruff. He demanded my driver’s license and the passports of my friends. At first I handed him my Florida driver’s license, hoping that would prove sufficient, but he was not interested in such a trivial document. No. He wanted to see an international driver’s license. Well, of course I had one of those, but the thing was expired and I had never bothered to return to a Triple A store in the States and get an updated version. But the booklet – for that is what it resembled – contained instructions and details in so many languages as to be virtually impossible for an ordinary policeman to interpret. The cop never noticed, right on the front page, that the date of expiration was written plainly as 1996, about three years previously.

He handed us back our various documents and waved us on. So we were free to continue. I made a note to myself to pay the damn ten bucks when I got back to Florida and get a new international license. Aiming for less stress was always a good path to follow.

We soon reached an altitude where the air was moister and the landscape changed. The sun disappeared and we didn’t see much of it again. But the mists held promises of secrets to come.

3) Higher up, the clouds take over

We made our way to the small village of Putre at the edge of the park to check out and stay at the only suitable hotel that catered to upscale tourists. Apparently the place had been originally built to house mining interests, and the hotel was quite dark and gloomy with few guests, although hospitable enough.

Early the next day we drove into the park, and into another continuum of life. Lauca has been compared favorably with the Serengeti in Africa and although I had thought that a dubious claim, it held a certain justification. We saw herds of guanacos and vicuñas. Herds, mind you, of animals that were nearly extinct in the rest of their original native Andean ranges.

Vicuñas had been hunted to near extermination in Peru, because traditionally the only method for harvesting their fine fur was to kill them. Programs now exist near Arequipa to shear the animals - a small scarf of vicuña wool costs nearly a thousand dollars – but you don’t often see them in the wild. In Lauca they are plentiful, and we soon became jaded. “Oh, look, there’s another bunch,” became a common remark among the three of us in the car.

We even saw a couple of viscachas, furry little rodents that look like a cross between a bunny and a rat. They knew where to find the sun and warm themselves on rocks near the road. This species, too, had been mostly hunted for its fur, and I’d never seen one before.

We gasped for air as we reached the height of the altiplano at over 4000 meters or 13000 feet above sea level. And the weather turned cold. But soon we reached a series of high lakes, famous for their flamingo populations. Flamingoes? In the snow? What a concept! Three species of the bird – a synonym for Florida in the USA – thrive in remote parts of the Andes Mountains: the Andean, the Chilean, and the James.

Meanwhile the volcanoes seemed to appear and disappear in and out of the clouds. They were everywhere. The land was geologically active to an extreme point.

Other tourists had braved the weather to come up here; we were not alone. But we didn’t see any other gringos or Europeans, only South Americans. They were brave people who may have only been passing through on their way to Bolivia or had come into Lauca for the scenery and wildlife.

The countryside became more magnificent with every turn of the road.

9) High lakes and salt pans. This land used to lie underwater.

Although originally a part of the Inca Empire, the area was home still to a small population of Aymara. Most of the natives who hadn’t been exterminated in the old Spanish silver mines had moved on and migrated to the cities. We stopped in one tiny hamlet where we’d heard you could buy locally-knit sweaters. (I purchased a beautiful sweater of baby alpaca fur for my son, but it never did fit him; the garment was the right size but the hole for the head was too small.)

When we returned to our hotel in Putre at the end of the day , we were exhausted but exhilarated. In the restaurant we met an improbable character, an Australian guide who had lived in Chile for years and who looked like Paul Hogan of “Crocodile Dundee” fame. He had two Germans in tow, who had hired him to show them the park, but he abandoned his clients for our more genial and English-speaking company. He pounded back a thicket of beer bottles that soon turned into a grove of primary forest, and told us some history of northern Chile. When I mentioned to him that we almost hadn’t stopped at the police checkpoint on the way into the mountains, he expressed shock. “If you hadn’t of stopped they’d have shot at you,” he told us.

“What?” I said. “That would never happen in Peru.” Of course, I had no way to be sure of this statement.

“This isn’t Peru, mate, it’s Chile. And don’t forget the difference.”

So we kept that useful advice in mind for the rest of our stay in Lauca and cautiously observed the traffic laws. And reminded ourselves that we weren’t in Peru anymore.

Sobre el "debate" de los candidatos a Diputado en TVN

A las 11 de la mañana de este Domingo 8 de Noviembre, se comenzó a emitir el programa “Tiempo de Diputados” de TVN, con la participación estelar de la mayoría de nuestros aspirantes a Diputado por la región de Arica y Parinacota. Sólo uno se excusó de no ir, que fue Jorge Seleme, representante del PRI.

La ocasión era perfecta para lograr ver en cámara y ante toda la ciudad, proyectos de trabajo de cómo impulsarían su región, cómo nos representarían, qué problemáticas les urge. En síntesis, cuáles eran sus ideas fuerzas para escoger y votar por uno de ellos. Sin embargo, lo que se vio en pantalla, no logró responder ninguna de las respuestas antes hechas.

El programa inició con el narcotráfico, tema por el cual somos tan conocidos en Santiago. La candidata del pacto “Chile Limpio Vote Feliz”, Pilar Mazuela, fue quien inició la conversación con una acusación al candidato independiente, Orlando Vargas (PPD), de su “pasado como narcotraficante”, argumentando que él no debiese estar postulando a un cargo público con un pasado así. Luego la moderadora, Mónica Rincón, dio el pase al candidato y actual Diputado del PS, Iván Paredes, quien con papeles en mano, hizo leer a la periodista una declaración extrajudicial que dio Pizarro. Por otro lado, el empresario radial, inquieto ante esas acusaciones, sólo se remitió a decir que no recordaba lo expuesto en el papel.

El episodio ocupó más de 25 minutos del programa, donde la polémica desechó el eje principal de la cita, que era debatir y proponer ideas. Muchos agradecen que el programa sólo haya sido emitido en Arica, ya que en igual horario se transmitió el mismo programa, pero con distintos candidatos según sus distritos.

Pero el hecho no terminó ahí, pues casi cerrada la discusión, comenzó el ataque a la Diputada Ximena Valcarce y su “poca fiscalización” a su padre, ex Alcalde de Arica, acusado de malversación de fondos públicos. Acusación que fue nuevamente realizada por la ex Seremi del MOP, pero esta vez no tan apoyada con el Diputado PS.

En consecuencia, los ariqueños vimos un programa político donde no hubo espacio al desarrollo de ideas y propuestas, ayudando al hecho, el débil manejo de tiempos que tuvo la periodista que insistió en ponerle leña al fuego como popularmente se dice. Entonces, ¿hasta cuándo veremos y soportaremos- las típicas peleas entre políticos que no hacen más que retrasar el desarrollo de nuestra región?. Todos coinciden en que Arica se encuentra dividida, pero ¿qué hacemos nosotros (los ariqueños) ante tal hecho?. Seguiremos aceptando que “ciertos iluminados” llegan de otros lados, como dice un candidato, a que nos diga qué tenemos que hacer. En ocasiones como estas se hace cierta la frase que dice que cada región tiene las autoridades que se merece.

Turistas elijieron terminales de buses como el sexto aspecto más negativo de Tarapacá el año 2000

Según la encuesta de demanda turística del INE realizada en 1999 y 2000, los terminales de buses de la región de Tarapacá y Arica y Parinacota, fueron el sexto aspecto más negativo para el turismo de la región.

Hay que considerar que se incluyeron los variados terminales de buses de Iquique y los dos terminales de buses de Arica.

Benedicto Cervellino y Donatello su hijo, son quienes manejan esta empresa que tiene 65 años de actividad, forjada en el desierto del norte de Chile, dónde el sol calienta más fuerte en la aridez de Atacama.

Los conductores de esta empresa de buses deben asistir constantemente a cursos de capacitación y perfeccionamiento en temas como conducción a la defensiva, sicología de la emergencia, primeros auxilios, combates de incendios y conducción de alta montaña, entre otros. Capacitación que en muchas áreas es exigida por las empresas mineras.

En 2005 se convirtieron en primera empresa de buses que presta traslados mineros en conseguir la norma de calidad ISO 9001/2000, incluso antes de Pullman Bus.

El mismo empresario es dueño también del centro recreacional Oasis de Pica.

Peru's Inferiority Complex

“We always had this sense of inferiority, of not being important. We always thought that we couldn’t do what the others could.” – Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (President of Brazil)

President “Lula” not only made a statement that spoke for the people of Brazil (South America’s largest country) after it was announced that Rio de Janeiro would be host to the 2016 Summer Olympic Games; He had also touched upon a sentiment that many Peruvians share.

Taking a look at my Peruvian sister-in-law’s Facebook profile I glanced at the one and only sentence in her Interests section: “Salir del País,” which translates into English as “Leave the country.”

It is a phrase you often see and hear from many Peruvians who feel that their country has little future or success to offer them. The general (albeit misinformed) consensus is that pastures are greener abroad in North America, Europe and Asia.

Lula’s quote brought me back to the thought of Peru’s long standing conflict with Chile stemming from the 19th century War of the Pacific.

The conflict continues today over Pisco (a brandy), wine, desserts, the potato, music, retail chains, energy sources, raw materials and maritime borders.

It is safe for me to argue that: A.) Pisco and the Potato originated in Peru; and B.) Chilean wine is poisonous per the warnings on humurous Peruvian T-shirts.

Needless to say I did not heed the T-shirt’s warning and learned the truth about Chilean wine the hard way.

Sadly it seems that only Peruvians and a few privileged foreigners are aware of Peru’s rich culture, history, gastronomy, eco systems, landscapes, products and resources….Phew! Did I omit anything?!

Unfortunately, Chileans have the one up when it comes to marketing and that is why they can sell their pet rocks in the form of wine, produce and tourism to the international market.

Argentina has its gauchos, glaciers, tango, Evita and Buenos Aires.

Brazil has its supermodels in thongs, festive samba music, the world’s largest carnaval party, and sexy beaches.

Chile has its success thanks to Pinochet and the marketing of Peruvian products falsely labeled as Chilean.

Peru has Llamas, Machu Picchu and the Incas….sure there’s a whole lot more to Peru, but It’s like the Vegas saying – “What happens in Peru, stays in Peru.”

One day Peruvians, like my sister-in-law, will realize that not only is the grass greener right where they are standing, but it is infinitely more diverse, beautiful and richer than any other nation on earth.

As living Criolla legend Eva Ayllon sang:

“Es la tierra del Inca / que el sol ilumina/ porque Dios lo manda / que ese Dios a la gloria / le cambió de nombre / y le puso ¡Perú!”

Un muerto al volcarse un doble piso de Kenny Bus cerca de Iquique

Alrededor de las 6:30 horas de hoy un bus Marcopolo Paradiso 1800 DD (dos pisos) de la empresa calameña Kenny Bus se volcó a la altura de Patache en la ruta A1 que une Antofagasta e Iquique.

Pasada la medianoche partió desde el Terminal de Buses de Antofagasta el bus de la empresa Kenny Bus con destino a la ciudades de Iquique y Arica, volcándose alrededor de las seis a de la mañana a la altura del Puerto de Patache a unos 60 kilómetros al sur de la ciudad de Iquique.

Según distintas versiones de medios de prensa nacionales, se manejan varias hipótesis sobre la causa del accidente. En el lugar falleció lamentablemente Genoveva Edilia Briceño Pinto (52) con domicilio en Antofagasta, la que salió expulsada de su asiento y murió aplastada por el vehículo. Los otros 23 pasajeros del Kenny Bus, resultaron con heridas de diversa consideración.

El Marcopolo Paradiso 1800 DD AÑO 2008 y con 200 mil kilómetros de recorrido de la empresa calameña Kenny Bus, PPU BDBD73, quedó de costado en una zanja de más de 3 metros de profundidad. Entre las hipótesis que se manejan están el exceso de velocidad, el cansancio del chofer que se habría quedado dormido al volante y una brusca maniobra para evitar colisionar con otro vehículo.

Poblado de Acha tiene movilización a Arica desde julio

Habitantes de Acha tienen por primera vez transporte público de pasajeros.

Un indudable mejoramiento en su calidad de vida tienen desde principios de mes los habitantes del valle de Acha, gracias al inicio de movilización pública desde y hacia Arica, gracias al Programa de Subsidio al Transporte Rural de Pasajeros para Zonas Aisladas que permite integrar geográfica y económicamente a las comunidades más alejadas de nuestra región.

Por sólo 350 pesos para público general y 180 pesos para adultos mayores y estudiantes, las personas que viven en este valle podrán ir y regresar en cualquiera de los cuatro recorridos diarios, partiendo desde el frontis del terminal internacional de buses, ubicado en avenida Diego Portales.

El presidente de la junta vecinal de Acha y de la Unión Comunal Rural, Orlando Mundaca, expresó la alegría que ha significado para los vecinos del sector la habilitación de este recorrido. “Ha sido un cambio significativo, ya que el costo de venir en auto era altísimo y quienes no podían hacerlo debían ‘venirse a dedo’, muchas veces en la parte trasera de camiones de manera peligrosa e incómoda”, agregó.

El seremi de Transportes y Telecomunicaciones, Juan Estefan, explicó que en la actualidad la región cuenta con nueve recorridos incluidos en el Programa de Subsidio al Transporte en Zonas Aisladas, que benefician a las localidades de Lluta, Visviri, Caquena, Parinacota, Socoroma, Putre, Codpa y Cobija, entre otras.

“A estos recorridos corresponde en total un subsidio por parte del Gobierno de Chile de 6 millones 847 mil 778 pesos mensuales. Respecto al subsidio para el poblado de Acha, éste asciende a 840 mil pesos mensuales”, agregó.

El intendente Luis Rocafull, dijo que el Gobierno de Chile está trabajando activamente para que la conectividad no tenga obstáculos, acercando a las personas que geográficamente están más lejos.

Asimismo, dijo que esta nueva ruta no sólo beneficiará a los habitantes de los poblados si no también incentivará las actividades productivas en pos de la economía local.

Busbahnhof Tacna (Peruanische Grenzstadt zu Chile): Eigentlich war der Plan, dass wir uns hier trennen. Die Beiden nach Cusco für Machu Picchu und ich nach Puno (Bolivien), da sie den Norden des Titikakasees nicht machen wollten und ich für Machu Picchu mehr Zeit, auf einer anderen Reise haben wollte. Doch war dies, die erste peruanische Stadt und die ersten Eindrücke von Peru, wie … Armut; die Häuser – ohne Dächer (jetzt weiß ich, das man sonst mehr Steuern bezahlen muss); keine Tourist weit und breit und lauter gaffende, braungebrannte Peruaner, gaben mir nicht nicht das Gefühl von Sicherheit, um unbesorgt alleine weiterreisen zu können. Also entschied ich mich, schon auf dieser Reise Machu Picchu abzuhaken und dann im weiteren Verlauf der Reise, die Beiden noch für Puno zu begeistern

Busfahrt Tacna-Arequipa:

Viel viel Steppe, ein paar Berge, wenig Pflanzen und endlose Langeweile. Wir fuhren ungefähr 3h durch eine immergleiche Steinwüste, bis mir auffiel, dass alle Steine entweder auf Haufen oder in endlos langen Linien lagen, die wie Grundstücke zu markieren schienen. Wer hat sich bloß diese undankbare Arbeit gemacht… in dieser gottverlassenen Wüste und WARUM, um himmels Willen? Ich weiß es bis heute nicht!

Auf dem Weg bleiben wir ständig stehen, um irgendwelche Peruaner mitzunehmen, die irgendwo am Wegesrand, offensichtlich ganz genau auf DIESEN Bus gewartet haben. Dann endlich, halten wir in einer Stadt. Anscheinend sind wir da, weil alle außer uns austeigen. Es ist verdammt heiß im Bus. Draußen tummeln sich immer mehr Peruaner an der Bustür, die irgendwas wie Brot, Wasser, Obst oder Süßigkeiten zum Kaufen den Aussteigenden entgegendrücken. Ein Blick aus dem Fenster und mir wird schnell kar, dass ICH hier nicht aussteigen will… mit meiner Kamera zu Füßen, die hier sicherlich das durchschnittliche Jahreseinkommen bei Weitem übertrifft. Katharina und Robert kaufen sich draußen Wasser und eine übergroße Tüte mit 5 süßen Faldenbroten, die umgerechnet 50 Cent kostet und wahrscheinlich, im Vergleich zu heimischen Marktpreisen, den völligen Ober-Wucher bedeuten. Die Leute scheinen wieder einzusteigen… Gott sei Dank, es geht weiter…

Ankunft Arequipa:

Der schöne Sonnenuntergang, als wir durch die Vororte Arequipas fahren, kann nicht verhindern, dass ich weiterhin keine richtige Lust verspüre auszusteigen… solch eine Armut da draußen.

Nachtbus nach Cusco: Ich werde von der Morgensonne geweckt. Sitze direkt vorne am Fenster des Doppelstockbusses. Wir stehen im Stau. Die Fenster sind beschlagen und die meisten schafen noch. Draußen erscheint zunehmend eine schöne grüne Berglandschaft, die immer weiter von der aufgehenden Sonne, wie beim Öffnen des Vorhanges im Theater, präsentiert wird. Peru ist echt wunderschön! Bald schon geht es weiter und wir fahren durch eine herrliche Landschaft mit glasklaren Seen, Flüssen, Feldern, und Bergen am Horizont. Wir passieren süße kleine Dörfer, die Leute arbeiten auf den Feldern und ordnen an der Straßenseite ihre Getreidebündel und selbstgebrannten Lehmziegel. (Fotos habe ich leider nur auf Film)

In Cusco erfahre ich später, dass bei dem Busunfall 500m vor uns, der zu dem Stau führte, auch der Busfahrer seines Nachtbuses eingeschlafen war und nun mehr als 20 Tote zu beklagen waren – darunter auch ausländische Touristen.

Cusco: In den Bergen auf 3400 Höhe und super Sonnenschein. Wir habe ein tolles angesagtes Backpacker-Hostal direkt in der schönen Innenstadt. Es gibt im Innenhof einen schönen Ausblick auf die Berge mit ihren vollbebauten Hängen und jede Menge Hängematten zum Relaxen in der warmen Sonne. Man fühlt sich sofort wohl im Zentrum Cuscos. Alles ist schön, alles ist sauber, alles wirkt spanisch, an jeder Ecke einen Polizist und bis auf „weiße“ Touristen kaum Peruaner, außer Bettler und kleine Mädchen die in traditioneller Kleidung und Vikunjas (das Mini-Lama der Andenregion) für Geld Fotos mit ihnen anbieten.

Jetzt ist es schon mehr als einen Monat her. Diejenigen unter euch, die mich wirklich kennen, wissen dass ich immer versuche, von einem Eindruck zu Nächsten zu flüchten. Ich habe wohl in der letzten Zeit immer nur daran gedacht, die Fotos fertig zu bekommen, falls ich mal die Ruhe fand, an die Reise zurückzudenken. Mit dem Gedanken auch noch etwas zu den Bildern zu schreiben, konnte ich mich nie richtig anfreunden, da ich selbst nicht im Klaren darüber war, was ich eigentlich erlebt hatte. In jeder Situation auf der Reise, bevor die Eindrücke überhaupt bei mir ankommen konnten, hatte die Hand-Augen-Koordination bereits den Ablöser meiner Kamera gedrückt. Ich war so versessen darauf, mögliche Impressionen auf Bildern einzufangen, dass ich bei Erfolg nur ein Glücksgefühl meiner Sammelleidenschaft spürte.

Es war eine Reise, als hätte man sich ein „Reiseführerkonzentrat“ zur schnelleren Einnahme direkt ins Auge getröpfelt. Mehr hastend als ruhend, mehr abhakend als entdeckend trafen Unmengen an Informationen auf unsere Sehnerven. Ich bin mit 2 Freunden gereist, auch wenn unsere Freundschaft erst während der Reise nennenswert wurde. Die Eine (Katharina),…

Da ich eher der dickköpfige Perfektionist bin, war das Hauptinteresse (Lonelyplanet-sei-dank) eher alle machbaren Highlights in Peru und Bolivien abzuklappern, gute Busse und Hostel, sowie Sitzplätze am Fenster zu wählen und möglichst gleich die Bustickets für die Weiterfahrt bei Ankunft zu kaufen.

Letztlich möchte ich keinen der Beiden auf der, mit Abstand geilsten Tour, die ich je gemacht habe, missen. Wir haben wahrscheinlich sogar für deutsche Verhältnisse, zu viel geplant und über nächste Schritte diskutiert. Im Endeffekt aber, blicken wir stolz zurück, können eine gewaltige Sammlung an Fotos und Erfahrungen präsentieren und werden diese ereignisreiche Tour für unser Leben nicht vergessen. Jedenfalls geht es mir so.

Für die Ausländer, die hier in Südamerika befristet arbeiten, scheint es naheliegend zu sein, eine ähnliche Tour zu unternehmen, da sich die Gelegenheit bietet, einmalige Orte mit Weltruhm zu sehen. In mir hat allein der Gedanke daran, Ehrfurcht ausgelöst, dass ich mit Machu Picchu einen Ort besuchen konnte, der für viele Menschen immer ein Lebenstraum bleiben wird.

Aber genug geschwafelt. Ich möchte euch gerne meine Eindrücke, die ich nach der Zeit noch behalten habe, schildern.

Flug Santiago-Arica (nördlichste Stadt Chiles): Wir starten bei Ungewitter. Es regnet wie aus Kübeln. Zum Glück habe ich einen Fensterplatz. Das einzige was bei diesem Nachtflug jedoch zu sehen ist, sind die beleuchteten Flügel und die einzelnen Regentropfen, die durch das Blitzlicht der äußeren Flügelleuchte, sekündlich wie zu Eis erstarren. Es gibt Turbulenzen. Für das ungewöhliche Seitwärtsdriften, habe ich mir bereits durch vergangene Flüge, das Wort „sliden“, aus dem Englischen zur Beschreibung angeeignet. Slidend also, und immer wieder mit, durch Luftlöcher verursachte, bauchkrampfartige Höhenschwankungen, setze ich mir die Kopfhörer für das integrierte Radio der Armlehne auf. Es gibt auf den 11 Kanälen eine erstaunlich guten Musikmischung. Entscheide mich letzlich für Klassik, lehne mich tief zurück in den Business Class Sessel und schaue noch ein wenig aus dem Fenster. Draußen nur der sekündliche Blitz und die vereiste Tropfenarmada. Schlafe bald völlig entspannt nach einiger Zeit ein.

Contaminados con plomo claman por ser incluidos en plan de erradicación

El mismo gobierno que los contaminó ahora les ofrece soluciones.

Entre ellos está Abigaíl Guzmán, postrada a causa de daños neurológicos. Su caso dará origen a tercera querella criminal.

Patricia Aguirre, una vecina de calle Linderos en la población Los Industriales 1 de Arica, interpondrá una querella criminal contra quienes resulten responsables de la contaminación causada por la basura tóxica (plomo y arsénico) que la empresa Promel abandonó en el radio urbano de la ciudad nortina.

Se suma así a otras dos que tramita la justicia, que fueron presentadas por vecinos que viven en las poblaciones construidas junto a los acopios de metales pesados.

La decidió tras conocer el examen que la Clínica Alemana le realizó el mes pasado a su hija Abigaíl Guzmán, de 17 años, y que durante toda su vida ha vivido postrada en una silla de ruedas y con un severo retraso mental e hidrocefalia.

El test diagnosticó la enfermedad de Chiari, malformación de la médula espinal, que la literatura médica asocia a la exposición de la madre a sustancias químicas durante el embarazo.

Ello calza con la experiencia de Patricia. “De mis tres embarazos, sólo el de Abigaíl lo viví aquí. Mis otros hijos, de 26 y 21 años, son totalmente sanos”, relata. De hecho, tras el parto, el médico del Hospital Juan Noé le preguntó si estuvo expuesta a fumigación.

Oficialmente, ella no está dentro del Plan Maestro de erradicación, que tendrá una duración de tres años. Aunque afirma que le pasó al ministro de Salud, Álvaro Erazo, fotos de su hija, no le dieron explicaciones para excluirla del plan de ayuda. Además, está a la espera de una biopsia que precise por qué se forman quistes en el cuerpo de su hija. Gracias a un apoyo privado, la biopsia se la realizó en Santiago, pues el Hospital de Arica aún no le da hora.El sector en el que vive quedó fuera del perímetro a erradicar.

El plan de erradicación fue diseñado por el mismo gobierno de la Concertación que está directamente involucrado en esta catástrofe sanitaria. La principal fuente de contaminación en Chile son las empresas estatales como ENAP y CODELCO y los negociados y coimas entre las autoridades corruptas que favorecen la operación de empresas privadas que destruyen la Naturaleza, tal como está sucediendo con la catástrofe de los géiseres del Tatio.

Al principio del gobierno de Patricio Aylwin empresas suecas le pagaron a Promel, una empresa chilena relacionada con exiliados comunistas que habían huido a Europa después de la instauración del gobierno militar de Pinochet, para que trajera a Chile toneladas de desechos tóxicos. La Concertación autorizó la importación de desechos tóxicos como una forma de pagar favores políticos a la izquierda sueca. Estos desechos incluían una gran cantidad de plomo y arsénico y Promel desembarcó las toxinas en un sector de Arica conocido como Los Industriales. Después de hecho el negocio Promel se declaró en quiebra y la población empezó a enfermar por intoxicación crónica. Ahora, la Concertación se lava las manos.

Sólo los subsidios básicos para sacar a los vecinos que habitan 1.880 viviendas que están junto a los acopios de plomo y arsénico exigirán un desembolso estatal de US$22,5 millones, pero las autoridades admiten que esa cifra no cubre el valor comercial total de muchas de las viviendas.

En Nacimiento con Azola, fuera del área que intervendrá el Gobierno, vive Eder Arancibia . Sus ademanes infantiles no se condicen con sus 20 años, edad que acredita con su carné. “Sólo me acuerdo que jugaba en los terrenos con plomo”, relata. Su déficit en la hormona del crecimiento e hipogonadismo no es su único problema de salud. También le aparecen tumores por una enfermedad asociada a una diabetes insípida. Su madre, Clara Castillo, puso en venta la casa, para salir de ahí y costear el tratamiento de su hijo.

A sus 23 años, Mario Navarro ya recibe una pensión de invalidez ($70 mil) a causa de su bronquiectasias, una enfermedad respiratoria causada por el arsénico. La sufre desde los 8, haciéndole respirar con dificultad, limitando su actividad física, alterando su temperatura corporal, haciéndole botar sangre. Su casa, ubicada en Azola con Antártica, quedó fuera del área declarada por el Gobierno como contaminada.

“Me cansé, y sólo quiero irme de este lugar”, comenta Mario.

El diputado socialista Iván Paredes dijo a Digital FM de Arica que el gobierno que encabezó Ricardo Lagos no le dio la importancia que merecía el tema de la contaminación con metales pesados. “Hubo desidia… lo digo con vergüenza, porque mi gobierno, el que encabezó el Presidente Lagos no le dio la importancia que esto tenía”, manifestó. El parlamentario aseguró que hace seis años él ya había propuesto las mismas medidas del Plan Maestro para ayudar a los contaminados con metales pesados.

Este sábado 3 de octubre, en la Biblioteca Central de la Universidad de Tarapacá (Campus Saucache), computines y no tan computines están invitados a participar de la celebración del Día del Software Libre, organizado por el Grupo de Difusión del Software Libre (GDSOL) de la misma universidad.

El evento es totalmente gratuito; habrán charlas sobre qué es el Software Libre, demostraciones y se regalarán CDs con el sistema operativo libre GNU/Linux y CDs con software libre para Windows.

Entre los beneficios de usar un software libre, se encuentra la posibilidad de compartir el software, no pagar por el permiso de usar el mismo (la licencia) y mejorarlo a tu gusto. Es decir, la antítesis al famoso y malévolo Windows.

Así que ya están avisados. A partir de las 10 de la mañana y hasta las 4 de la tarde, tendrás la oportunidad de conocer lo que hay detrás del famoso pingüíno y su compañero el toro.

Un poco de Periodismo y Objetividad, un caso personal

Hace unas semanas, en Arica City, realizamos una entrevista (podcast) al candidato a diputado por Arica, Patricio Barrios. Esto, siendo parte de una serie de podcast que se pretenden seguir realizando a los candidatos por la ciudad.

A los días siguientes, se me invitó a ser parte del equipo de trabajo del candidato Barrios, pero no una invitación a formar parte de una ideología política, sino más bien, a poner en práctica mis humildes conocimientos sobre las nuevas tecnologías en su sitio recién estrenado. Pues bien, al aceptar esta participación me hice la siguiente pregunta, ¿esto me inhabilita para emitir opiniones sobre la política local?, el área que más trabajo en el Arica City.

Gran parte de quienes me leen, saben que estudio para lograr ser un periodista, estudio para eso estando recién en mi 3er año, y por tanto también saben que un periodista debe poseer esa cierta neutralidad en temas como política. Entonces ¿estoy en un conflicto de interés?

No, y por qué lo creo, por la sencilla razón de todo lo que hago puede ser ampliamente conocido. Basta con ver mis temas en este blog para saber y descubrir quién soy. Y eso creo se valora más; saber quién es el que emite un juicio. Me gusta la utopía de la objetividad, de hecho la defiendo y promuevo, pero dentro de los parámetros que toda persona real tiene. Es lo que se me enseña en la universidad: “todo signo es ideológico”. Entendiendo signo como nuestra forma de hablar, de ser y hacer. Nuestras acciones, sean cual sean, evidencian nuestras formas de pensar.

Así que no crean que cambiará algo en mi mal aprendida forma de informar, no seré ni más ni menos objetivo; soy quien soy y saben quién soy. Ahora en ustedes está el valorar o no lo que hago, y espero me lo hagan saber, ya que de eso se trata el concepto 2.0. Que tanto ustedes como yo aprendamos; porque nadie tiene la verdad absoluta. Eso se lo dejo a Dios.

lo llevaba sin bozal

[Arica, Chile] [Nuevo incidente con un herido grave. Perro peligroso era llevado sin bozal ni correa por su dueña]. Lo leímos en La Estrella de Arica:

Feroz Ataque de Pitbull en Pleno Sector Central. Con lesiones graves resultó un transeúnte que fue atacado por un perro de raza pitbull, que lo mordió en el muslo derecho. Afortunadamente el hecho no llegó a mayores por la reacción de dos detectives de la PDI, quienes lograron sacar al perro que mantenía sus dientes en la pierna.Los hechos ocurrieron ayer en calle Baquedano, en los instantes en que Angel Retamales caminaba por el lugar, encontrándose de frente con el can, cuya propietaria lo mantenía sin bozal y cadena.
El herido fue trasladado por funcionarios de Ejército hasta la Clínica San José, donde lo atendieron.

Colega, nos hicieron cholitos

Nos pusieron la trampa y caímos redonditos, periodistas – peruanos y chilenos – pisamos el palito que un – hasta ayer – desconocido grupo de cumbia arequipeño, colocó hábilmente. El viejo y sucio truco de provocar un “incidente” entre los dos países les funcionó, y ahora el video en youtube ha sobrepasado las 14 mil reproducciones, además de las veces que los canales de televisión – peruanos y chilenos – lo han puesto en sus pantallas.

No se trata de una bandera o de un morro, se trata de una muy bien estudiada estrategia de marketing, pues tras el “incidente” el grupo ha conseguido varias entrevistas y sin duda, contratos.

Felizmente el “incidente” no ha pasado de una curiosidad del editor del video, y ninguna autoridad – peruana o chilena – ha hecho comentarios al respecto, a menos que algún periodista cholito – peruano y chileno – intente buscarlos.
