I met David Lachapelle last night. The David Lachapelle. I remember taking his photo series “Burning down the House” featuring Alexander McQueen and Isabella Blow to art class when I was in 9th grade as part of my homework assignment. If you could pinpoint a moment when I started showing an interest in fashion, that would probably be the closest thing to it.

It was the tidbits that were the best. Him telling us that Andy Warhol was extremely religious right before his death and went to church every Sunday, that Madonna was the meanest person to photograph.  And this “…I love fashion, I love beauty, but when it becomes everything it is decadent living.” He condenses it so well. The struggle, the successes, the mania, the overindulgence, the eventual withdrawal to a Hawaiian jungle, and now…the legacy?

Fast forward a few more hours and I’m at Armin. My first rave experience you know, was with Armin. There’s been a few times in between but I think last night was the best yet. Bubbles, confetti, pyrotechnics, a bouncing hydraulic floor, it was a great party.

*Sigh* Really great party.

All these thoughts swirling, mixing, coagulating in my mind. There’s a message in there somewhere.

I listen to Trance music in so many hours of my days and nights that it’s odd to be in a silent room. A recent project required me to make a logo for a night club, “Club Life”. This name is derived from Tiesto’s radio show in the Netherlands by the same name: “Tiesto’s Club Life”. Trance has been made famous by such artists including Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, David Guetta, Paul van Dyk, Robert Miles, Above & Beyond, Markus Schulz, Ferry Corsten, Gareth Emery, Sander Van Doorn, ATB, Paul Oakenfold, and many more. Club Life is for the trendy, night clubbers with a love for trance and dancing with friends or other lovers of this music style. Indeed.

And no day reflects this evil like the darkest day of the year, Black Friday. Shopping malls turn to lands of desolation, lives are lost (literally) as warring factions set upon the dwindling resources of a forgotten age (bargains).

The question is….

WHY!

I mean what is it about this day that drives the hordes to pillage and plunder as they do?

I can see it from the retailer’s side, they want to make as much money as possible, but what about the consumer?

I guess the clue is in the word, isn’t it? Consumer. It’s Xmas, we have money in our pockets (bonuses) and we have to get little Johny the latest robot and Susy the latest doll. But if it is a question of getting a certain toy, why not order it from a catalog or online? You can do that from the safety of your own home.

But let us not forget the real victims:

And he is right. Yes, store attendants can be snooty little brats who could find their heads in their own asses with both hands and a telescope but when you have to put up with shit like this:

You know what “the back” is? Is the space between the store walls and the actual walls of the mall. Cramped, smelly, cold and crawling with things that where old when the dinosaurs ruled the Earth. Trust me, this is maximum sale time. What you see is what you get. The store will not hold back anything. Who would even try to pull that off when you have the angriest/hungriest mobs this side of Attila the Hun devouring everything in sight? The aloof manner of the average teenage sales clerk is a defense mechanism, my friends! Jaded by countless hours of horror as reality is torn asunder in front of their very eyes (I know, I seen it, I SEEN IT!).Stuff that makes men out of boys, women out of girls and veterans of us all in a matter of minutes.

The greed, my god, the greed.

Of course, the media doesn’t help.

Oh no!

They hype this dark day for a month or so and then feast on the carcasses of the fallen (again literally fallen), the trampled, the dead (I wish I was making up that one, I really do) with stories of specials induced madness and blue light shock and awe.

And what about those vaunted Black Friday savings?

Buy one, get 50% of a second one? Really, that’s like 25% off (which it was the week before) and that’s only if you buy items of the same price.  Plus, factor in the sales tax which cuts into that percentage. On my desk I have a 25% coupon for Borders. It says, and I quote “list price of almost everything!”  Almost? Great!

On second thought….

But not everyone is compelled by this rush to the bottomless abyss of consumption. No, others wait, and wait and wait some more, while every show on radio and television tells us how many days are left till Xmas.

Laat ik ze niet meer tegenkomen, het wordt nooit meer wat. Stress; daarvan heb ik al zeven jaar een spastische darm. I, Tiffany Ap, as of today am an officially published writer.

My debuts in the Beijinger and Agenda magazine.

I’ve been working as an intern for True Run Media in my spare time which does the Beijinger magazine and website: http://www.thebeijinger.com, Immersion travel guides (whose travel books about Beijing are unparalleled. And I promise you, I am not biased because I work for the company. I bought the books first and then started working for them because I loved the things they did, not the other way around), Agenda and Beijingkids magazine. The goal with this employment was to get to know the city better and break out of the foreign student bubble (loathe loathe loathe how foreign students here are so content to remain foreigners and whose entire experience in China is the Sanlitun bar crawl).  Also to gain some journalism experience so I could have something tangible to weigh my career choice against at the end of this year. To law school or not to law school, that is the question…a whole other question.

And in every way, it has been rewarding. I spent the whole day there in the office today from 10am to 6pm. It has really pulled me into the arts, music, entertainment, f&b scene, the life and essence of this town. It’s taught me new ways to write. It’s teaching me what the real working world is like.

Up til now, I’ve been doing mostly restaurant and bar reviews. But today, I just submitted my finished drafts for an article on where to get your Christmas trees this jolly season and another introducing the different types of massage available in Beijing (traditional Chinese massage and non-TCM types, i.e. Shiatsu, Swedish, Balinese, Ayurverdic).  I have an upcoming hutong hotel interview (in Chinese) and I write blog entries on the website and update the events calendar. (I now know every happy hour special in the whole damned Beijing by heart. Cinco de drinco Mondays, Buy one get one free at Zeta Bar Wednesdays….etc.)

It’s really hands on journalism experience. Other internship tales too often consist of answering the phones and playing delivery boy/girl. In general, I think I’ve been very lucky with all the internships I’ve had, mainly owing to my Dad’s connections.  While sure, what was published in the two issues this time around is nothing profound, I’m not making groundbreaking news–it’s reviews after all, but you gotta start somewhere and it’s undeniably fun.

Solely from a superficial standpoint, it’s worthwhile. I get a very small stipend every month but for every assignment, they comp my taxi fares and give me a small budget for a friend and I to check out various venues and events, usually things I want to go to to begin with. I get to eat at places with price ranges I’d only treat myself to on special occasions or never at all. This Friday, I’ll get to have a beautiful Italian meal, courtesy of Agenda magazine. This internship expenses a good percent of my social life for the simple exchange of 300 words or less.

Oh yeah, and there’s this as well on Friday too.

This is just you know, for funsies. They didn’t even ask me to write anything about it. And that ladies and gentlemen, is how my job will pay for pretty much my entire Friday this week. Ahhhh, I love my job. I love my job. I love my job.

Yessss, the day I’ve been waiting for. The day I bring my new beach cruiser home. Here’s a pic of this bad boy all set up and home with me:

Totally rode up to the Sea Cliff shopping center on it; submitted my Oxycontin prescription refill (which won’t be ready until Tuesday, so thank goodness I still have some), got a delicious Starbucks gingerbread white chocolate mocha and listened to some new Armin van Buuren the whole ride there and back.

Totally did it while feeling absolutely excellent and the happiest I’ve been in 6-7 months. Honestly I thought I’d never get to ride a bike again. But I did it today.

For many years now, I’ve been a huge fan of trance music. I think there’s something ridiculously awesome about it, however it’s really hard to explain or discuss what it is. You can’t talk about it. Well, you can, it just does no good because what you really need to do is feel it; once you feel whatever it is about it that grabs your heart, then you can understand it.

Two of my personal favorite DJs of trance that I always absolutely recommend are Ferry Corsten and Armin van Buuren. I find their music to be incredible; it touches me personally, and it’s full of emotion and feeling. I will absolutely have more recommendations on this later. Some songs that have really struck me lately are Twice in a Blue Moon (off of Ferry’s TIABM album) as well as In and Out of Love and Fine Without You Now (from Armin van Buuren’s Imagine). Absolutely excellent.

Of course like with all music, this will change, but it’s helped me get through what I’ve been going through. I hope it brings some positivity to others as well, because people usually think “Oh ok, trance music, dance music you hear at a rave on drugs.” No, that’s not even it at all. You’d be surprised about when you’ll need to hear the music, feel the music; it gets your emotions and mood in ways typical radio hits don’t. It’s food for your soul, but you don’t know it until you find a particular genre you like (I’m suggesting trance, as it’s my most preferred and favorite) and I find trance to be something people can generally like. It’s an every day-whenever-you-need-it-at-whenever-moment thing. Not a rave thing. Not a club thing. It’s a life thing.
