If only Lieutenant Tye Co had checked the holding cells along with the supply stores and the armory. The misplaced shackles and sword are the result of their latest capture, now escapee, pirate Dac Ta. As soon as they “locked” him up, Dac used an old piratey trick he knew to pick the locks with a small bit of metal that was hidden in his vest lining.

Dac Ta is free of his cell, but he is not free from Fort Mega’s island. He can’t steal a dingy from the fortress, they might notice that missing even if they haven’t discovered his escape. So Dac has made his way to the beach to search for a way off the island.

Meet up at Loie Fuller’s restaurant (1455 Westminster St) on Sunday, Dec. 20th from 5-6pm before heading out at 6pm to bring holiday cheer to the neighborhood through festive songs.

We have planned stops with neighbors along the way for warm drinks and bathroom breaks before circling around to end at 8pm for cookies and hot chocolate at Leadership Rhode Island headquarters (1570 Westminster)– one block from Loie Fuller’s, our original starting point.

We’re pleased to carol in the snow and cold, but won’t venture out in rain. A rainy Sunday night will keep us indoors at Loie Fuller’s for drinks and songs around the fireplace. Either way, we’ll experience much fun and merrymaking.

True knighthood is the Holy Grail of manhood, a revelation attainable only by the pure. The proud are ever barred from taking a draught from it.

Our very captivation with the Holy Grail consists in the fact that it has not been found and only few have even seen it. And, of course, the reason that the mysterious cup remains ever out of reach for the ordinary man and is because its quest is fraught with danger: fearful obstacles, inscrutable riddles, and deadly foes.

To those who possess true manliness, such obstacles are the reason why The Quest is so appealing. By definition manliness is the penchant to overcome obstacles. The more hopeless the attainment, the bigger and better is the man who laughs in the face perils to be found there. Those who are lesser men still aspire to the Grail, but fear leads them to experience the danger only vicariously by following along at a safe distance, through spectator sports, litrerature and movies.

And yet there is a temptation in that boldness to which those gallant men of the Round Table too easily succumb. The bigger and better that a man thinks he is, the more likely he is to fail utterly in attaining the goal. Gawain, for example, showed himself the fool for this very reason. And Lancelot had to be taken down a few notches (many actually) before he was even granted a partial fulfillment of his desire. Galahad attained the grail, not so much by his prowess, but more so, by his humility and purity.

There is a strange and wonderful coincidence of opposites in the embodiment of true chivalry: courage, strength, boldness and skill, on the one hand; reverence, humility, meekness, and deference on the other.

In a sermon written during his Anglican Period, entitled, “The Weapons of the Saints,” Venerable John Henry Cardinal Newman couched the spiritual life in terms of a war in which the stratagem for victory demands an inversion of worldly values:

But in that kingdom which Christ has set up, all is contrariwise. “The weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds.” What was before in honour, has been dishonoured; what before was in dishonour, has come to honour; what before was successful, fails; what before failed, succeeds.

It is this inversion that constitutes the real difficulty to the attainment of the Holy Grail of true knighthood. It is the riddle of riddles. The Black Knight, enemy of our souls, guards the bridge that leads to the hermit who is ensconced away from the manners of worldly men. It is from him that we are to unlearn our pride and find the real weapons by which we are to succeed in our quest.

Cardinal Newman’s sermon is a commentary on Our Lord’s words: Many that are first shall be last, and the last shall be first (Mt 19:30). And he supports his thesis from many other passages of the New Testament concerning, for example, strength made perfect in weakness (2 Cor 12:9), the of putting down the proud and the exalting of the humble (Lk 1:52), the blessedness of those who suffer and the woes of those who are satisfied (Mt 5:2-10; Lk 6:24-26), and God’s choice of the weak and despised to do his work (1 Cor 1:27). It should be abundantly clear to anyone with a modicum of familiarity with scripture that God triumphs in and through those who have rejected worldly ambition and self-assuredness.

The invisible powers of the heavens, truth, meekness, and righteousness, are ever coming in upon the earth, ever pouring in, gathering, thronging, warring, triumphing, under the guidance of Him who “is alive and was dead, and is alive for evermore.”

Truth, meekness and righteousness, according to Venerable Newman, are the real weapons of the saints, the means by which they are victorious over Satan, sin and death. The Holy Grail of Christian Knighthood is so hidden that in order to find it the knight must lose himself in the process.

This is that intangible, greater thing, after which young men aspire. It is the stuff of true nobility. It is strength without arrogance, command without self-interest.

Venerable Newman notes that “we like to hear marvellous tales, which throw us out of things as they are, and introduce us to things that are not.” The paradox of the cross and of the victorious King who triumphs through His own death is the cosmic myth, the retelling of which is the incantation that opens the sealed doors of our hearts. He that openeth and no man shutteth, shutteth and no man openeth, is the only one with the key (Ap 3:7).

The beloved disciple saw Him mounted on a white horse, and going forth “conquering and to conquer.” “And the armies which were in heaven followed Him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of His mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it He should smite the nations, and He shall rule them with a rod of iron.” [Rev. xix. 14, 15.]

The Quest of the Holy Grail is a lesser myth, as are all other stories when compared to the gospel myth in which the most fantastic tale is merged with history, and where what Tolkien called eucatastrophe, a literary climax beyond our wildest hopes, is made the substance of all our hopes and the ground upon which we walk in the daylight of this world.

Indeed, the return of the king in Tolkien’s mythology is an ascendency by way of descent. Aragorn and the Dúnedain are content to be despised if that will better equip them to protect and defend the peoples of Middle Earth. Aragorn himself must choose the path leading downward, literally underground, through the Paths of the Dead under the White Mountains, like Christ in His harrowing of hell, if he is to triumph on behalf of those entrusted to his care.

After Gandalf had “passed through fire and deep water,” and had completed his own christic transformation, he delivered a message to Aragorn from the Lady of Light, Galadriel:

Where now are the Dúnedain, Elessar, Elessar?
Why do thy kinsfolk wander afar?
Near is the hour when the Lost should come forth,
And the Grey Company ride from the North.
But dark is the path appointed for thee:
The Dead watch the road that leads to the Sea (Book III, Chapter V).

Aragorn chose the path of truth, meekness and righteousness. He was prepared to face his fear, and he was not afraid to confront his own ego with the double-edged sword of God’s truth. He chose to go down in order to go up, to be last in order to be first. Yet the myth of Aragorn cannot be a vicarious substitute for our own humiliation. We must really experience it. Newman has it right:

We so love the idea of the invisible, that we even build fabrics in the air for ourselves, if heavenly truth be not vouchsafed us. We love to fancy ourselves involved in circumstances of danger or trial, and acquitting ourselves well under them. Or we imagine some perfection, such as earth has not, which we follow, and render it our homage and our heart. Such is the state more or less of young persons before the world alters them, before the world comes upon them, as it often does very soon, with its polluting, withering, debasing, deadening influence, before it breathes on them, and blights and parches, and strips off their green foliage, and leaves them, as dry and wintry trees without sap or sweetness.

We must not loose our idealism as we grow older, but “heavenly truth” should purify our tendency to experience knighthood vicariously through its trappings and shards. Ours is to be the knighthood of the real Dúnedain, a hidden knighthood in search of the hidden, but very real Holy Grail.

As a Franciscan, I have had many opportunities to reflect upon the militant example of Saints Francis and Maximilian, and of the great tertiary St. Louis of France. The Holy Patriarch of the Seraphic Order, Our Holy Father St. Francis, was well aware of the Arthurian legends and aspired to knighthood and the Holy Grail himself. Later, after he too had chosen the path downward, he called the simple brothers who lived in seclusion and despised status and pomp, his “Knights of the Round Table.”

In this last week of ordinary time, during the “octave” of the Feast of Christ the King, we look for His return at the end of the world, when he will preside over the cosmic resolution to the perennial struggle of St. Michael and the dragon. Then He will raise his wounded hands over the universe and all of us will be witnesses of the full revelation of His truth, a more powerful illumination than possession of the Grail itself. Then we will all know what true chivalry is and whether we are worthy to drink from the cup filled by the hands of Him who carried the sword of truth and slayed the dragon by His humble acceptance of our condition and by His willing suffering and death.

The weapons of the true knight are those of the saints: truth, meekness and righteousness. They are best fitted to help us along the way of our Quest, a path that leads up a narrow crag in a mountain. But this path to the heights strangely leads us downward by many uneven steps, until we arrive in the sanctuary of the Holy Grail and find rest in the yoke of Christ on the Holy Mountain of His Passion, Death and Resurrection.

Rob Goldman founded Living History, incorporated in October 2002. This past October his organization was selected as this year’s winner of the Tom Roberts Prize for Creative Achievement in the Humanities. Goldman lives in Elmwood, but has a particular interest in Dexter Field and the Cranston Armory on the WestSide.

How did Living History get its start?
I had been a the treasurer (and de facto development person) for Co. A 54th Massachusetts/Glory Brigade from 1994 to 2001. We (the 54th) had worked with Cathedral and English High Schools and the Timility Middle School bringing some of their students into re-enacating. At one point we had a program which was funded with left-over City of Boston summer youth jobs money. This program was a collaboration with the National Park Service. When I moved to Providence I wanted to do something similar.

What’s the purpose of Living History?
We engage high school students in civic responsibility through re-enacting. We launch them into careers in history and preservation. We educate the public about the role of African Americans in the Civil War.

Students are trained to become soldiers in the 14th Regiment Rhode Island Heavy Artillery (Colored). They learn about the material culture of the Black Civil War soldier. They receive additional training in historic interpretation which, includes research and media skills. Some students are placed in internships with history and preservation organizations such as the National Park Service, Coggeshall Museum Farm, Tennis Hall of Fame, Newport Collaborative Architects, and Providence Revolving Fund.

What are the three resources you need most to succeed?
Money, money, and money. Other than that we need a space in the Cranston Street Armory. This goal has been long sought after and frustratingly denied. The original 14th was trained on Dexter Field. [To offer donations or assistance, contact Goldman at RKGoldman@juno.com]

Who is involved in Living History? Why do students participate?
Living History has an Advisory Board of 5 people. There are 3 adult re-enactor volunteers who help with trips and encampments. There are 19 students enlisted as of 11/22/09. All but one student is from the Met High School.

Students join because: “It’s cool.”, “It’s bangin’ fun.” “My friend told me about it.” “I like history.” “I get to go on trips.”

Met students earn academic credit for participating. Service in the 14th provides them with required internships and real-world learning experiences. It also helps them fulfill community service requirements. There is an important career focus to the program which attracts kids and staff.

What’s your connection to the WestSide?
We used Dexter Field this summer for our Summer Youth Employment Program on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

We can’t get into the Armory! Arrrrrghghghghgh! The State Fire Marshall has it pretty well locked up. The State Properties Committee has refused to let us use the place three times. They won’t even let us make a presentation to them. They say we’re not a state agency and therefore can not submit an application to them. We ARE a state agency. The 14th is an official Historic Command under the Adjutant General of Rhode Island.

As stated above, Dexter Field was the training camp for the 14th RI in 1863-64.

Can spectators attend? If so, what’s this year’s schedule?
Our public programs are high participatory. We’re all about interacting with the public, especially young people. Our schedule is posted on our website.

Originally, whenever I came back to the game my goal was to get to the point that I could do 25 man

Originally, whenever I came back to the game my goal was to get to the point that I could do 25 man raids. According to my armory, I think that I’m now at that point.

While learning the encounters and gearing up, I had kept my eyes open for a possible slot in a 25 man raiding guild. Eventually, I found what I thought was a fit. I spent a decent amount of time working on my app and I was eventually asked to contact an officer for a trial. I disbanded from my current guild and while I was waiting for an officer to log in from the 25 man guild I began to think about a few things.

Are 25 man raids really better than 10 man raids – Other than the bosses having a few more hit points and hit a little harder there really isn’t much difference in the bosses between 10 and 25 man. They may drop slightly better loot, but if I’m enjoying 10 mans who cares.

I enjoy my current guildmates. Is it worth it? - This is what it really came down to. I really enjoy the people in my guild. If I’m having fun with them doing what we are doing why change? Sure, there are some things that I wish were different, but I think everyone has issues like that.

I think what it comes down to is that during my time in WoW I have always been a raider. In Vanilla this meant 40 man raids. In BC it meant 25 man raids (Be honest Kara didn’t really count, although ZA was definitely a step up). Now even though the biggest raids are still 25 man, the 10 man raids provide a viable progression path. If anything, I think some of the encounters are harder with 10 raiders. Plus, you don’t have to deal with keeping a steady 25 man roster.

I think I just got so caught up with the idea that you’re not really a raider unless you raid with the biggest raids, that I didn’t understand that WoW is different now and that is no longer the case. I still jump in some PuG 25 man raids. I have nothing against 25 mans raids and would definitely participate if my guild went this direction, but now that the 10 man versions exist the 25 man versions no longer seem epic.

So in the end, I decided to stay. I’m really glad that I did.

/salute HCWT (Just have to do something about that name…. j/k)

For The Horde! I mean, Appy Monday! The MMO juggernaut World of Warcraft has spawned numerous addons and third-party applications, but Blizzard Entertainment as only released one official app for the iPhone/iPod Touch, the World of Warcraft Mobile Armory. Based on the official WoW online Armory, the mobile app attempts to present the website’s functionality in an iPhone/iPod Touch format.

Premise

The WoW Armory is a searchable database of characters, guilds, arena teams and items in the World of Warcraft, with data taken from from the actual in-game servers. Information is updated continually in the Armory, and you can also access your in-game calendar, view achievements, and check out talent builds with a talent calculator.

Presentation

The graphical interface is World of Warcraft themed, with clear icons and text. Layouts of various things are similar to how you would see them in-game. That seems like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised at how often developers get this wrong. For instance, the Character Profile screen looks like your character window in the actual game. Click on an item, and a box with the item stats comes up just like when you hover over it in-game. The only aspect I found difficult to distinguish is the item lists. Item names are displayed in the color that indicates their quality, and epic purple item names were difficult to read on the brown parchment background. But that’s probably nitpicky.

Interface

There are little nuances that make this a polished app. The Mobile Armory makes good use of icons and dropdowns. Things look like they do in-game, making it very easy for a WoW player to pick up and use. You can bookmark characters (your own and others) so you can easily pull up toons you frequently look up. Items have more info than just their basic stats, like what they sell to NPC vendors for, disenchant info, and where they can be acquired.

I am a little worried about security with both the app and website. As with the website, you log into the app using your World of Warcraft username and password. However I also use the Blizzard Mobile Authenticator for extra security when logging into the game. There’s also an iPhone/iPod Touch version called the Battle.net Mobile Authenticator. (I strongly recommend either, but that’s a different article.) It generates a unique code you enter just past the login screen, that’s a one time use and tied to your account. Once the authenticator is tied to your account, you can’t even log into account management on their website without using it. But you log into the Armory without it. It would in some sense defeat the purpose of a mobile app to be tied to something else. They could build the functionality into the Battle.net Mobile Authenticator, but non-users would be left out. It seems like a possible security loophole, though I haven’t heard of any specific security issues with the app.

Freshness

The Armory website and this app came about because WoW players were making game addons to pull the same type of data, and like many other ideas, Blizzard took it and made it their own, and probably better. I like having the ability to browse my character stats and achievements on the go, or to pull up people I know and see what they’re currently wearing or what achievements they’ve gotten lately. In a pinch it’s also nice to look something up while in game, without having to switch to a browser on your gaming machine.

There are several functions available through the website Armory that are not present in the app, such as character statistics, arena and pet calculators, and reputation information. I tried to look up my rep with a faction with it and was surprised to see it wasn’t in there, since almost everything else I use in the Armory was. Also, in future versions, it would also be nice to see a 3D representation of your character in the Armory. In fairness, the website Armory doesn’t do that either, but there’s even an app in Facebook that’ll do that!

Value

The app is free, and I think it has value to World of Warcraft players. While there are a few things I would tweak or add to it, it’s a very solid effort by Blizzard. It’s not one of those apps I use every day, and you can do what it does (and more) via the website Armory. But it’s convenient to use while playing, and fun to browse when you’re away from your computer, which overall makes it a worthwhile app.

Summary

Premise: Excellent
Presentation: Impressive
Interface: Decent
Freshness: Above Average
Value: Good
Overall: Above Average App

I have been reflecting lately on the notion of Dom Chautard concerning that aspect of the interior life that is Englished in his book “custody of the heart.” Perhaps a more militant way of translating this notion in modern English would be “guarding the heart.”

It is the duty of a knight to guard and protect, and we often associate this role with his perennial preoccupation with the Damsel in Distress. Elsewhere I have noted that the Blessed Virgin is the personification of the Damsel in Distress–not so much because She is helpless, which She is not, nor is that an essential quality of any such damsel, but because She personifies everything true, good and beautiful. She does this precisely at the foot of the cross as the personification of the Bride of Christ and as Mother and exemplar of the Church. Ultimately the Christian Knight must be at Her service.

But the curious fact is that the knight, while an image of Christ, the Bridegroom and Savior, is first of all a sinner and one who must identify with the needy Bride as much as any woman should. This is not to say that the knight must become a woman spiritually, but that his masculinity need not be threatened by whole-hearted honesty about his dependence on God.

In fact, nothing could be more important. In order to stand fast in the breach that has been blasted in the wall of the City of God, Our Lady’s knight must first repair the breach in his own heart. How can a knight defend the City of God, how can he fight for the honor of the Immaculate Heart and guard it from the dishonor of the heathens, if he has not first mastered the art of guarding his own heart? In fact, there is nothing more urgent than the attention we pay to our own vulnerabilities.

To this end, I would like to associate the notion of Dom Chautard with that of St. Paul concerning the Armor of God.

Ephesians 6

Finally, brethren, be strengthened in the Lord and in the might of his power. Put you on the armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the deceits of the devil. For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood; but against principalities and powers, against the rulers of the world of this darkness, against the spirits of wickedness in the high places (10-12).

This particular passage of St. Paul’s writings is perhaps the most militant in expression of anything he wrote. In fact, St. Paul was a fearless man, undergoing every suffering willingly for the sake of the gospel, facing whatever danger and enemy with which he was confronted for the sake of souls. Whenever a spiritual writer refers to “the Apostle” without mentioning a name, we know that he is referring to St. Paul. This is because the Apostle exemplified in himself the man of action in the heart of Christ.

However, this most militant passage of his writings is not about the apostolate or action, but about the interior life. His exhortation is to stand fast against the enemy of our soul, which is not flesh and blood, but the Prince of this World. Interesting how the one who pretends to have the world in his hand is not a power of this world, but one of the world of darkness. And the subtle liar would like us to believe that all our fights in this world are the wars of righteousness, meanwhile he insinuates himself into our hearts and makes mayhem of our spiritual lives, compromising our prayerful union with God and throwing smoke in the eyes of our discernment.

How often we invest ourselves in our daily concerns without having first invested ourselves in prayer. The life of a warrior is nothing if not one of discipline. Spiritual combat is more than anything a matter of our interior union with God.

Therefore, take unto you the armor of God, that you may be able to resist in the evil day and to stand in all things perfect (13).

Because of these considerations, I was inspired then to reflect on St. Paul’s words in the form of a prayer.

The ordination of a knight or his investiture (clothing) is the matter at hand. In the ancient text, De benedictione novi militis (Blessing of a New Knight), the prayer in which the candidate receives his shield reads thus:

O Lord, we pray of your mercy, that your servant, who receives this shield in honor of chivalry, may pass through this temporal world without losing the eternal one. Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

There are plenty of dangers in this world, the greatest of them are spiritual and have little to do with pagans and profligates. Sometimes we are our own worst enemy. We should be careful not to lose the one fight that really matters.

There is long standing tradition of “vesting prayers” within the Church, very often reflecting the words of St. Paul. The text of the vesting prayers of the priest are the most eloquent example, though many religious have their own form adapted to their habit and charism. The following is my own adaptation of vesting prayers for the Christian and modern knight, not necessarily to be prayed as such, but at least an expression of custody of the heart.

At Rising

Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth (14a) . . .

Heavenly Father, in the Holy Name of Jesus, let me guard my heart from all falsehood and allow me to live in Thy truth. Give me Thy help to keep far from me every deception of the enemy. May I be strong and ready for every arrow that flieth in the day, of the business that walketh about in the dark: of invasion, or of the noonday devil (Ps 90:6). Amen.

At Kneeling Down

. . . and having on the breastplate of justice (14b):

In Jesus’ Name, I beg for His righteousness, Lord God, because I have none of my own. Clothe me in His life and virtue. Give me His spirit so that I guard the recesses of my heart from every sinful inclination and false inspiration. May zeal for justice increase in me as I stand fast against my own compromises. Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth: and a door round about my lips. Incline not my heart to evil words; to make excuses in sins (Ps 140:3-4). Give the grace to submit myself entirely to Thy holy will. Amen.

At Dressing

And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace (15).

Father, All-Powerful, Our Lord Jesus Christ, who said, Do not think that I came to send peace upon earth: I came not to send peace, but the sword (Mt 10:34), also spoke to us saying: Peace I leave with you: my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, do I give unto you. Let not your heart be troubled: nor let it be afraid (Jn 14:27). May I be prepared by His gospel of peace to bring peace wherever I go, by resisting the enemy of my soul and helping others to do likewise. Let me die to myself for Jesus Christ to win souls for Him, in who’s Holy Name I trust and pray. Amen.

At Leading the Family

In all things taking the shield of faith, wherewith you may be able to extinguish all the fiery darts of the most wicked one (16).

Heavenly Father, in Thy power and in the Holy Name of Thy Son, Jesus, I beg the Grace to be a shepherd after the heart of Christ to my family and all those entrusted to my care. May my faith not fail and may my conversion be complete so I might confirm my brethren in their faith (cf. Lk 22:31-32). Grant that I might shield myself and my people from every wile of the enemy and rise in joy and confidence in the Power of the Holy Name of Jesus. Amen.

At One’s Daily Duty

And take unto you the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (17).

Lord, All-Powerful, blessed art Thou, who teacheth my hands to fight, and my fingers to war. Thou art my mercy, and my refuge: my support, and my deliverer: My protector, and I have hoped in Thee, who subdueth my people under me (Ps 144: 1-2). Guard my mind from impurity and deception that I may discern your holy will in all things. Separate from my heart by Thy armed right hand every motive that does not come from Thee. May I do Thy work, and only Thy work, in the manner of Thy Son, Jesus, and with the honorable intentions of His Sacred Heart. I ask this in His Holy Name. Amen.

****

St. Paul concludes with the following:

By all prayer and supplication praying at all times in the spirit: and in the same watching with all instance and supplication for all the saints. (18).

In Dom Chautard’s teaching’s on custody of the heart he mentions spiritual disciplines like “purity of intention,” the “practice of the presence of God,”devotion to Our Lady,” continual formation in custody of the heart and vigilance at all times. St. Paul says: all prayer, all times, with all instance, for all the saints. The matter is preaching clear: before anything else, to stand fast means to guard our own heart. And for this we must not count the cost, but fight in a manly way for the kingdom of God

I was travelling with my family. We stopped in a small hotel and as I was unloading the car of its packages, bags and suitcases, I discovered that there was a forest behind the building. I chose to go inside it, for there was a very clean path piercing through the woods.

I found an old cottage. Most of it was undone, broken, rusty and old. I went inside and immediately saw tap water. I was very thirsty and I drank it with my bare mouth. I felt fulfilled, but then I saw a yellow and red sign saying that the water was poisoned. I went back to my family, feeling sicker with each footsteps. Temperature appeared to be raising. I collapsed and lost consciousness.

I woke up in a prison jail. There were 3 other inmates. It appears we were all captured in the same way by drinking poisonous water. They all told me they had committed a crime and I told them that I was innocent. They were shocked to learn my story and they tried to help me. They said they were the product of this world and that they would have revenge on it. As a prison guard came in, we all rushed towards the exit and knocked him down. We went to the armory and we took various weapons. An alarm went off. Tens of armed guards came and a very intense battle began. We managed to kill many of them, but when I looked back at my friends, they were all dead.
